Virginia Hospital Center's Emergency Department is faster than other area hospital ERs on a variety of measurements, according to a new federal study.

If you go to the emergency room at Virginia Hospital Center with a broken bone, how long will it take before you get pain medicine? The federal government says 40 minutes on average— much faster than the national average of 62 minutes, according to hospital comparison statistics available through Medicare.gov, and one of the lowest averages in Northern Virginia.

At Inova Mount Vernon, the wait could be 73 minutes.
At Inova Alexandria the wait could be 56 minutes, and out at
Inova Fairfax the wait could be 50 minutes.

That’s just one new key measure of ER efficiency that has been posted online from hospitals taking part in this data initiative, according to a report by former San Diego Union-Tribune writer Cheryl Clark, now senior quality editor for HealthLeaders Media.

“With precious little fanfare, Uncle Sam last month rolled out a big, fat database with seven measures comparing a service that many people — healthcare providers and patients alike — consider the most critical any hospital can provide,” Clark wrote recently.

The database showed that the VirginiaHospital Center ER is better than the national average at providing effective heart attack care, effective pneumonia care and timely and effective surgical care.

The average time patients spend in the ER before they were admitted to Virginia Hospital Center as an inpatient is also lower than the national and Virginia averages, as is the amount of time a patient spends in the emergency department before being seen by a healthcare professional.

In late 2012, the Virginia Hospital Center was recognized as an Emergency Center of Excellence — something only a handful of ERs nationwide received.

Factors that Play Into Wait Times

Of course, much of this depends on time of day and day of the week you are visiting the emergency department, as any ER doctor can tell you. Friday and Saturday nights tend to be busy, for example.

Data collected in 2011 and early 2012 also tracked how long it took for an ER patient to be seen by a healthcare professional and how long the wait was to get a bed if they needed admission. Other data showed how long patients spent in the ER before being sent home, whether they received a brain scan if they might have suffered a stroke, how many heart attack patients received aspirin and how quick, and more.

Clark interviewed Dr. Jesse Pines, an emergency room doctor and researcher who directs the center for healthcare quality at George Washington University — where the broken bone-pain medication wait time is almost double the national average at 110 minutes.

“The theory is that when hospitals report this information, it makes them focus on it, and improve throughout their (Emergency Department),” Pines told her.

“But it’s very hard to do. Certain performance measures are easier to fix — like simple process measures like giving patients an aspirin — than improving ED throughput, which involves development of interdisciplinary teams.”

Then type in your ZIP code, city or local hospital.
When a list of hospitals is displayed, put a checkmark next to two or three hospitals.
Scroll down and click the yellow "Compare Now" button to display more details.
Then click "Timely and Effecive Care."
Finally, scroll down to the "Timely Emergency Department Care" section, where a green button allows you to view more details.

Has your doctor recommended that you have a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening? Have you put it off? If your excuse for not being screened is that the procedure doesn’t sound very pleasant, here are some facts you should know:

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society.
40-50 percent of those who should be screened haven’t done it.
Colorectal cancer affects men and women equally.

The good news is, colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. It begins as intestinal polyps that may or may not become cancer over time. Preemptive removal of the polyps can prevent colorectal cancer, but many polyps go undetected because people don’t have routine screenings.
Rebekah Kim, MD, a colorectal surgeon who recently joined Washington Colorectal Surgery, conducted a research study to correlate prior compliance with colonoscopy screening guidelines to the diagnosis of colorectal cancer.
“Our study showed that very few people get colorectal cancer when they follow the screening guidelines exactly,” Dr. Kim said. “Most of the people in the study had a colonoscopy because they already had symptoms as opposed to being screened preemptively.”
Dr. Kim advises, “Just do it! Don’t be afraid and don’t put it off.”
For most people, the biggest deterrent to having a colonoscopy is the prep. The intestines need to be clean to get a clear picture, which requires following a liquid diet the day before the test, and taking two tablets and drinking two small bottles of prep medication.

“The preparation is so much simpler now,” says Pradeep Gupta, MD, Division Chief of Gastroenterology. “Most people don’t have to drink the large volumes of liquid that we used to use five to ten years ago.
Another big objection from patients—particularly men— is the test seems like an invasion of privacy. “I can’t count the number of times that a patient has told me that part of the body is ‘exit only,’” Dr. Gupta says. “Getting your colon screened is part of maintaining your health, like getting your cholesterol checked.” There are other colorectal cancer screening tests available, but none is as effective as colonoscopy. If any abnormalities are found during other screening tests, a colonoscopy is still recommended as a follow-up. “All roads lead to colonoscopy,” Dr. Gupta says. “This can save your life.”

COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING OPTIONS

These are four primary screening options for colorectal cancer.

Fecal occult blood test
Only picks up about 20 percent of significant lesions.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy
Misses 40 percent of cancers on the right side of the body.
Double contrast barium enema
Misread for flat polyps is very high
Colonoscopy
More than 90 percent accurate. Any precancerous polyps found can be removed at the same time.

Dr. David Duhamel, pulmonologist will discuss the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, including the use of low dose CT scan for screening. More people die from lung cancer than breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer combined. While incidence of the disease is less common than malignancies of the breast and prostate, lung cancer is substantially more lethal. John R. Garrett, MD, FACS started the Cardiac, Vascular & Thoracic Surgery Program at Virginia Hospital Center over 20 years ago, and since 1995, John W. Rhee, MD, FACS has worked with Dr. Garrett to maintain this state-of-the-art program. Although it is common for surgeons to operate at multiple medical facilities, having surgeons dedicated to one program at one hospital creates consistency, reliability, and a highly skilled program leading to better patient outcomes. It’s almost time for your baby to be born at Virginia Hospital Center. In preparation for your stay on the Mother-Baby Unit, we want to fill you in about common tests and treatments your newborn may have before going home.
