Fraylove don't die

2013-12-08T14:49:00.000+01:00

@J__Bossie volgen

It's been already 7 years when The Fray had their breakthrough with 'Over My Head'. One year later they released their second single, which even became a bigger hit. Ofcourse I'm talking about 'How To Save A Life'. Everyone knew that it would be hard to surpass that succes. They had a few other singles like 'You Found Me', 'Heartless (Kayne West cover)' and 'Never Say Never' but they never reached the same success in Belgium again.

Their third album 'Scars & Stories' even went unnoticed in Belgium. It wasn't picked up by the radio, their weren't asked to perform shows. So The Fray faded quietly from the scene. UNTIL now! On the 14th of January they will release their fourth album called 'Helios'. This week they released their debut single 'Love Don't Die'. I listened to it and thought that is was very refreshing. The song itself has a lot more power, than previous songs that we know from The Fray.

But like I always say, judge yourself!

Concert Review: Bastille

@J__Bossie volgen

It's been a while! It was a pretty busy time for me, but you can count on it: I'm back! I'll start with a new concert review. I went to the concert of Bastille in the AB in Brussels. It was a fun night, a good night, bus also a special night.

The supporting act was To Kill A King. A very good band with a lot of potential. They're a British indie/folk rock band. They just released their debut album 'Cannibals With Cutlery'. I had the luck to do a little talk with the front man of the band. I've bought their album on vinyl and he signed it for me. The singer has a voice that would remind you to bands like Alt-j. But their guitar play has a certain dose of folk in it. I would recommend it to all the fans off Ben Howard, Mumford & Sons, ... you will love these guys.

Belgium was the last stop in the European tour from Bastille, so the band joined To Kill A King when they played their last song. After that it was the turn to Bastille to give the best they've got. And they did. I've seen a lot of bands over the past years in The AB (I Blame Coco, Laura Marling, The Offspring, Rise Against, Noah & The Whale, ...) but I never ever had a crowd that cheered so loud! It's obvious that they're getting huge, there were a lot of teenage girls, who were getting wet in their pants I guess.

The band also played 2 new songs, one of the songs they've also played on previous shows. But the second new song was an absolute world premiere. I loved both songs, because I hear a clear evolution. There was a lot more room for guitar play in the songs. After that the band played a few other songs from their album 'Bad Blood'. At the end Dan Smith went through the crowd, which made everyone go crazy.

After the show I had mixed feelings, it was a very good show, but at the other side I realized that it would probably be the last time that I can see them in a concert hall like The AB. They're getting too big, and I wish them all the luck of the world with it. It isn't any longer the band that I introduced in a blogpost 'new bands you wish you had found'. Well you all have found them now, I don't need to introduce them anymore, they've been picked up by several radio stations. It makes me glad, that bands that I post on this blog are becoming popular, but it also makes me a little bit sad. It's a knife that cuts on both ways. I need to share the band with everyone now. So lovely people, enjoy it. I will definitely keep following them and buy their second album when they release it, but I fear when they come back in a few years and play in some kind of an Arena that I will not go. I will let all the teenage girls go and look at home for a new band that I can introduce to you people.

Good luck Bastille!

I Hope everyone is ready for a new band introduction! This guy is from Australia. Unfortunately this singer-songwriter hasn't toured in Belgium yet. In March this year he has released his first EP called 'God Loves You When You're Dancing' (love that title by the way). His single 'Riptide' was picked up by several radio stations in Australia and that's how the ball went rolling. He signed a contract with Atlantic Records (Bruno Mars, Phil Collins, Crystal Fighters, Ed Sheeran, Jason Mraz, ...). On that same EP you will find the song 'From Afar', another one I love. You must all listen to judge yourself but I think he has such an unique sound. When I'm listening to that song and I close my eyes I hear a bit similarity with the Tallest Man On Earth, but when the song evolves I hear similarity to Kodaline. Two bands I like, so I think it's magical that Vance Joy has it all in just one amazing voice. It makes me wish that I was back in Sydney so I could check him out. Last but not least I'm also a fan from those videos he makes. It's autumn these days in Belgium, but one listen to riptide and my brain takes me back to the summer. Vance Joy, make your album, I want to be your first European buyer.

Dan Croll

For fans of: Smallpools, The Colourist, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend

Thank god it's Monday! To start the week, I'll introduce you to a new musician named Dan Croll. People in Belgium probably never heard of this guy even if he doesn't live that far from us. Dan is a singer-songwriter born in 1990 from Liverpool. He studied there at the Liverpool Institute for Performing.

He officially started his music career exactly one year ago when he released his first single 'From Nowhere'. In march this year he released his second single called 'Compliment Your Soul'. A few months ago he released his third and latest single called 'In/Out'.

Besides he's a singer-songwriter he's also a multi-instrumentalist. He plays the piano, trumpet, guitar, bass and drums! He also dares to experiment with electronic beats. That's maybe what I like the most about this music, every song has a different sound and influence, still you can recognize a certain 'Dan Croll-sound'.

But of course, judge yourself!

American Authors

For fans of: Imagine Dragons, Awolnation, Walk The Moon

Today I'm happy to introduce you AA or American Authors. You never would have guessed from where they are, so I'm just gonna confirm that the band is from America. This foursome is from Brooklyn. They make popular Indie Rock. Their sound reminds me a bit of Imagine Dragons.

The members met each other while they were attending a music college back in 2006. After that they spend a year in Boston and started to make some music, back then they didn't call the AA, but The Blue Pages. Eventually in 2012 they changed their band name to American Authors and started working on their first EP. Their debut single believer was picked up by several alternative radio stations in America and that was the beginning of the story.

This year the band signed a contract with Mercury Records (The Strypes, Noah And The Whale, Jake Bugg, The Killers, ...) exactly one month ago they released their self-titled EP.

I see a great future for these four guys, but check out yourself!

Band introduction: Lewis Watson

@J__Bossie volgen

Lewis Watson

for fans of: Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard, Passenger, Milow, James Bay, Andrew Belle

In Belgium I'm still enjoying the summer temperatures, but you can like it or not, autumn is coming. In a few weeks it will get colder, the leaves will fall from the trees and nature will show us all the colors it has. Perfect timing for a new singer-songwriter if you ask me! Today I want to introduce you to Lewis Watson. This guy is only 20 years old and has released 3 EP's. You will love it, even if it's just only for the title. His first EP is called "It's got four sad songs on it BTW", his second EP called "Another four sad songs" and his latest EP is called "The Wild".

Lewis started writing songs from the moment he played the guitar. He got himself a guitar for his birthday when he was 16. He never took lessons, he just played all night long.

Eventually he started a youtube channel on another name, because he wanted to avoid the attention of his friends. He did some covers of Ben Howard, Bon Iver, Bombay Bicycle Club, ... they were all very successful and he got some real good comments on it. People started to ask if he could upload one of his own songs. After some hesitation he finally uploaded his first own song 'Sides'.

The people on youtube were amazed by it and that was the moment when he started to realize that he should be more confident about his songwriting. His youtube channel grew larger and larger. After a gig he decided to make his first EP, he recorded it in three days and with a very limited budget! "It's got four sad songs on it BTW" was born.

“I set the songs on that EP out like a story,” he explains. “‘What About Today’ was about quite a rubbish situation where I was being used, and that was the tale of the end of a relationship; ‘Windows’ was looking back after the relationship ended; ‘Bones’ is about meeting someone new; and ‘Nothing’ is about being happy with that person.”

He signed a contract with Warner Bross, released two more EP's. Today he stands on the beginning of a great career. It won't take long or this guy will be huge. Of course some people will say, what? Another singer-songwriter. Artists like Ben Howard, Passenger and Ed Sheeran has proven that there is a market for it. I think Lewis fits in that same market. And besides, I think it is a good evolution that this kind of music becomes more and more popular. Or are you going to weep, for another teenage boys-band? I don't think so!

Smallpools

For fans of: Phoenix, Youngblood Hawke, Passion Pit

They made officially the perfect summer anthem for me. I've been listening to their song dreaming since April and wanted to write a blog post about it. Only problem? They didn't release anything else. Now they have their first EP and a few songs, so here is my post!

I think they have a very fresh sound, people who like Phoenix will definitely appreciate this kind of music. The band exists out of four guys from the US. I was looking for their music in Belgium, but unfortunately I couldn't find it. I hope I got the chance to get an EP someday. For now their tourdates are only in the US, but that can change quickly! This is a band that got the potential to break through worldwide. I hope this helps to get picked up more in Belgium. Check them out!

We All Fuck Up Sometimes

2013-08-04T12:46:00.001+02:00

@J__Bossie volgen

We all fuck up sometimes!

Peace

Jonas

Band Introduction: The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood

Today I present you a new band called The Neighbourhood. In August they'll exist two years. These five guys come from California. They started with an EP called 'I'm Sorry... and Thank You', but since April this year they have their first full album called 'I love you'. Not the most original title, a bit of a shame, because their music is totally different from what we're used to hear these days. I think we can call it a bit Hipster, but still readers from this blog know that I hate to put a label on bands. Like you can see on this picture the bands love the black & white image. All their goodies and also their art work is in black & white.

I wish I could tell you more about this band, like how they met each other, who inspires them, ... but they keep their lips sealed about that stuff. The only comment that they give in interviews are: "We're just five friends making music together, the rest doesn't matter".

James Bay

When I do band introductions on this blog, it is because I believe in someone's talent. Well I believe in James Bay. James has just released his first EP called 'The Dark Of The Morning'. He is a young singer songwriter from the UK. He reminds me a bit of Belgian singer songwriter Jasper Erkens and also of that other James guy (I'm talking about James Morrison). The guitar takes the lead in his first EP. He said in an interview that the songs on 'The Dark of The Morning', are personal and honest stories. He has written them over the past 12 months when times were hard for him. When I first listened to it I heard a certain rawness in the songs. He also thinks it is important that you hear a 'live' sound in the songs. Good luck James, break a leg!

Band Introduction: The Strypes

@J__Bossie volgen

The Strypes

What are you saying? This generation doesn't know what good music is? Well, let us say you are terribly wrong! Today I introduce you to The Strypes. This band is from Ireland and was formed in 2008. The band says that it's inspired by the music from the 60' and 70'. It's true you can here a certain influence from The Beatles. But I definitely hear a bit of The Hives in their music and even an influence from the Arctic Monkeys.

Elton John is a fan from the band and discovered them as first celebrity. BUT it didn't stop their since 2012, Dave Grohl, Noel Gallagher, Miles Kane and Jeff Beck all said in interviews that they loved their music. In March they launched their debut single called 'Blue Collar Jane', last month their second single 'Hometown Girls' was released. They were also guests last month on the late-night show from Joos Holland.

Now what is remarkable is that when you look at the picture that they're pretty young. Well that's correct officially they're still a teenager band. Drummer Evan Walsh is 15yo, bass player Peter O’Hanlon 16 and guitarist Josh McClorey 17. They attended primary school together. The trio began practising blues covers in their early teens. In 2010 singer Ross Farrelly (16 now) joined them. This year the guys will also perform at Glastonburry.

@J__Bossie volgen

The Dear Hunter

Today I introduce you a band from the U.S. The Dear Hunter is a band with four members Casey Crescenzo, Nick Crescenzo, Maxwell Tousseau and Connor Doyle. Casey is the lead singer and also the one who started the band. They started in 2005, but back then it was actually a side project of The Receiving End Of Sirens (the previous band from Casey). He started with The Dear Hunter to release his music that didn't fit in his other band. Eight years later the band has already four full albums. They also released a couple of EP's. Unfortunately I've searched in a lot of record stores in Belgium to find their music, but I was unsuccessful :(. Last month they released their fifth album called 'Migrant'. That one is pretty mindblowing. So that's why I'm spreading the word because this band makes Indie Rock we need. When I listen to them I hear a number one hit in our alternative music charts, I hear a band that can play on all our festivals and give the crowd a crazy time. I've got proven right in the past, so let's hope I'm right this time.

Bands you wish YOU had found

2013-05-02T13:52:00.003+02:00

@J__Bossie volgen

The Colourist: for fans of Two Door Cinema Club, Vampire Weekend

The Colourist is a band from California. Until now not that known in Belgium or Europe, but that's something that can change quickly! They released their first EP with singles like 'Little Games' and 'Yes Yes'. I'm already a big fan, and can't wait until they release a full record! So support them, share them and download their songs (legally of course!).

Coasts: For fans of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, Kid Runner

Coasts is a new band from Bristol, UK. Like the Colourist they also just released a new EP called 'Paradise'. You can find them on iTunes. Or just check them out here. These are two songs from their new EP.

The O Hellos: for fans of Angus & Julia Stone, Of Monsters And Men, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero's

An electric folk rock duo from Texas! The two have just released their first full album called 'Through the deep, dark valley'. That album is a self-contained concept album. A what?! A self-contained concept album. That means that the album tells a kind of story and you need to listen to the whole album in its entirety and chronological order.

The Milk Carton Kids: for fans of Fleet Foxes, Angus Stone, Little Green Cars

The Milk Carton Kids are two older guys, two even older guitars dressed in old clothing. That's all part of the 'experience'. Still their music isn't old. They make a quiet sort of indie/guitar music. The two of them sing together on every song. They also record all their songs independently and release most of their music for free. Both guys played in a band and the music from The Milk Carton Kids is actually a compilation of the solo work from both guys.

They also decided to stick with the acoustic guitars in their shows, but both are multi-instrumentalists. They play for example also on the piano, bass, ukulele, ... Their first official release is called PROLOGUE.

Bands you wish you had found XXL

@J__Bossie volgen

To make up, for my absence I have a new 'Bands You Wish You Had Found'-post for you guys. But this time an XXL one!

Thirsty Merc (Pop/Rock)
Thirsty Merc is a band formed in 2002 in Sydney. They released three full albums until now, the latest one -Mousetrap Heart- was released in 2010. They make pop/rock. The reason I love them is that they have such a variety of melodies. They have some pretty black/dramatic songs, but also light, even funny songs.

Like what you heard? Check other songs: In the summertime, All My Life, Mousetrap Heart

Nina Nesbitt (Indie/Folk/Singer-songwriter)
For fans of: Laura Marling, Gabrielle Aplin, Kate McGill
Why? Because I tell you one thing boys and girls. While everybody was busy with hyping fucking Haim as the breakthrough of 2013, this 18 year old girl kept working. She is a female singer-songwriter and poulain from Passenger and Ed Sheeran. Why I love her? Because she has 1) an amazing voice, 2) she plays the guitar herself and wrote all her lyrics herself 3) she doesn't need computers to make her voice better like Haim does. During a live performance she still stands. For the fans of Haim, sorry if I'm negative. Their music isn't similar at all, but why I picked Haim this time is because they are announced as THE band from 2013. Well I tell you one thing guys, they will be forgotten as fast as they got known. But in a few months Nina will get her breakthrough, and she's a stayer.

Nina's first EP 'Stay Out' will come out on the 8th of April!

Like what you heard? Check other songs: Boy, Statues, Make Me Fall, Noserings & Shoestrings

King Charles (Singer Songwriter)
King Charles, is a singer-songwriter from Londen that makes a sort of Alternative Rock with folk influences. He supported Mumford & Sons this year, the band was even so kind to play with him on the song 'The Brightest Light'. He also has won a singer-songwriter award, Tom Waits and Kings Of Leon where a few members of the jury.

Rock Mafia (Alternative Rock/soul)

Not a new band at all, still a few people in Europe know them. What this guy is doing I don't know. He makes great music. Check out below, still he puts his own talent in the closet, to make more time to write songs. He wrote several hits for Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens. All credit for those girls, but please, stop waisting your time at them. With his band Rock Mafia he sold more than 100 million full albums worldwide. Time for some recognition don't you think?

Don't Worry Miley Cyrus is only the sexy bitch, she doesn't open her mouth to sing, only to kiss

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Is a typical New-Zealand Indie band, why typical New Zealand? It has that psychedelic influence in it's songs. For the Belgium boys & girls who like them there is good news. They will perform at the Belgium Festival Pukkelpop on the 16th of August. Even if you don't like the indie scene, the video from Swim and Sleep is worth watching.

NEEDTOBREATH (Rock)
For fans of: Right Away! Great Captain, Kings Of Leon, Switchfoot)

When you know my blog a bit, you know I keep one of the best bands for last. The Last band today is NEEDTOBREATHE. Their voice will immediatley remind you to Kings Of Leon. They do not only share the voice. They come also from America, the band is composed with two brothers Bear Rinehart (lead singer, guitar) and Bo Rinehart (guitar), just like the Followill brothers from KOL. Like those two KOL brothers they are also the sons of a pastor. I noticed these similar things and want it t share it with you guys, BUT they have definitely their own sound, and are not at all a rip off from KOL.
They have the reputation to be an awesome live band. So if you ever have the chance to see them, grab it! Until now they have released three full albums, the last album -The Reckoning- was released in 2011.

So yeah you can't be more Rock & Roll than this guy. For his debut album he worked with musicians from other Belgium bands like Dez Mona and Stray Dogs. He released the debut album under the name Winther. His second single Annie, has also a controversial videoclip. There are also two Belgium actresses in the videoclip. When you look at it you will definitely recognize Charlotte Vandermeersch and Marieke Dilles.

Walk Off The Earth

We've discussed a few bands on the post 'the breakthrough'. But it's time for our first real 'band introduction'-post of 2013. And actually I don't need to introduce you this time, because you'll probably know them. Today I introduce you to Walk Off The Earth. A band with a lot of potential that will be releasing their first album this year. Why you should already know them? Because I introduced you a year ago to Sarah Blackwood, she is now one of the bandmembers of WOTE. Another reason to know them is that they covered a lot of famous songs on youtube. Their most known cover is definitely 'Somebody That I Used To Know'. Where they play with 5 on one guitar. But now they stopped with covering songs and made their own songs. The first two singles of the album are already a fact and they're very promising. I'm looking forward to their first album.

Album Kodaline!

We'll need to wait until March, but Kodaline has presented today their debut album in Belgium. I was invited for an acoustic session with the band in the buildings from Sony Music Belgium. They played two new songs and their two hits 'In A Perfect World' and 'All I Want'.

Keep tuned, because later today I'll post some pictures and a video from their acoustic performance. After their performance I've got a little chat with the band. They were very nice, even a bit shy! I've asked them what their impression was from Belgium. They answered me that they would love to know the country better, but that they didn't have the chance. Because today they were bounded to a lot of interviews and promo and tonight they return to London. I've wished them success, and they all signed their setlist for me.

They also gave me a scoop! They told me that they would play at PUKKELPOP! So yes we have our first name for the festival in August!

Single: All I Want - later today I'll upload a video from their acoustic performance

The Breakthrough

In 2011, I told you guys that 2012 would be the year of the breakthrough for The Lumineers, Passenger, Paloma Faith and Daughter. I'm glad to say I wasn't wrong. A few months after my introduction, The Lumineers got airplay on radiostation Studio Brussel. It even got a number one position in the chart of 'De Afrekening'. Fourteen months after I introduced you Passenger he suddenly became big in Belgium and got a massive hit with 'let her go'. He even was the best selling artist in Belgium for a few weeks. Daughter didn't do it bad either, she performed in several clubs and played on the Belgium festival Pukkelpop. Only Paloma Faith didn't breakthrough here, but she did in the rest of the world. Maybe Belgium will notice her this year, we're always a bit slowly when it comes to music

I'll do some predictions for 2013:

Little Green Cars
For fans of: The Lumineers, Band Of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Said The Whale, Magic Numbers

Youngblood Hawke
For fans of: Metric, The Naked And the Famous, Foster The People

Hot Water Music
For fans of: Foo Fighters, The Gaslight Anthem, The Loved Ones, Brian Fallon

Imagine Dragons
For fans of: Awolnation, Alex Clare

Tom Odell

For fans of: Kodaline, Andy Burrows, The Temper Trap

And last but not least, I've got you a girl from Belgium. I bet 2013 will be her year.

Bastille, a band I introduced on this blog is giving away free music. Not one, but two EP's they've made for their fans. It's a must for every musiclover. They cover a lot of popular songs, but on their own Bastille way. Very good Hipster material my friends.
