It was a real privilege and honor to be on the team that produced “180“.

We deliberated much about exactly how the content should be presented. It was hard work but we knew it would be powerful, and seeing now some incredible responses from women who have had abortions and seriously regretted their decisions, changed and shaken by the powerful message within this film, I am greatly praising God.

This is a powerful pro-life documentary as well as a powerful presentation of the Gospel of Christ.

I encourage all who have not seen it, to go and spend just 33 minutes to watch this documentary.

Recreating the SAC logo (Strategic Air Command)

For my "Lancing the Sky" painting, I need to find a highly detailed SAC emblem and ribbon that was worn by the aircraft during those days. Strategic Air Command was what the USAF bomber force was under from 1946 to 1992. So many bombers wore the very visual SAC emblem and the star studded blue ribbon or sash that accompanied it.

Photo references of this emblem on the B-1A's is very scarce, and I couldn't find any that were high resolution and complete enough to draw. So I had to end up getting references from other bombers such as the B-36, B-58 and B-52's.

There are vector images of the SAC emblem online, free for use. However, the ones I found are very poor quality in the detail and very inaccurate. And being the perfectionist I am, I wanted to draw it by hand (I really enjoy it).

But first I needed to straighten out the logo.

So it was off to Photoshop where I straightened the distorted SAC logo I found off the internet so that I can redraw it and have it be turned into vector art for any further use on other SAC aircraft I decide to paint.
So, as you see in the image below, you can see a before and then after of the SAC image corrected and straightened.

This is my next scene I'm working on. I've been doing a good amount of research for it. That's half the fun. :)

I really enjoy studying about the subject matter almost as much as I like drawing or painting.

This subject is the Rockwell B-1A Lancer. I chose the B-1A over the B-1B's that fly today because I like the white anti-flash paint that was used on the first four prototype models. And I like the look of the old SAC emblem and ribbon that was near the nose.

The white paint on this subject, to me, has some neat reflections in it and reflects the blue sky and white clouds nicely.

The photo that inspired me is this one, a public domain image from the USAF image archives.

I really like the clumpy cumulus clouds forming in the background, and the sleek lines of the B-1A bomber prototype.

But I wanted to do something different with this. I wanted the aircraft to be angled upward so that it looks like it is in a climb rather than level flight. I am also wanting to put a chase plane alongside it as well.

So here begins my progress on this digital painting.

I am going to be using Adobe Photoshop as well as Corel Painter X, two of my favorite programs to work with in creating my art.

Initial work on clouds with (colors may vary on different
monitors) I work with a color calibrated monitor at home.
In this stage, the B-1mask is still level.

In my process, I've already been working on the background clouds. When I work on a piece, I'm not trying to get it to be as true to the photo references. No, I'm only using the photos for references and to be accurate and true to the subject, but I want to infuse as much as possible, some artistic license into each painting. In this case I really want to express a sense of the passion of flight, the conquering of a previous limitation with USAF heavy bombers which before the B-1 program could only travel at subsonic speeds. The B-1A were able to move at Mach 2.25.

So I wanted to convey a scene where the bomber was traveling up through the atmosphere on it's way to reach that speed. I am following the reference photo fairly closely for the background clouds because I really like the contrasts in them.

In the screenshot here, I've painted in the general gradient of colors and shadows. I've also angled the bomber upward for it's transition to a higher altitude for it's Mach 2+ speed tests.

I've noticed that in my screenshots on my StratoArt Facebook page, the colors are overly saturated. Be assured that they are not so on my color calibrated monitor at home. I may have to develop a Photoshop Action to desaturate colors before posting here and on FB.

I am using Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. The tool that I am predominately using for this project is the Mixer Brush Tool. It is a fantastic edition to the new version of Photoshop. Previous to Photoshop CS5, I had to predominately go to Corel Painter for true brush strokes, and while I still love Corel Painter and will certainly use it here, I have found the Mixer Brush to be a stroke (pun intended) of genius in including it in CS5.

I am beginning work on a drawing of an aircraft my father worked on at Wheeler Field, Hawaii in the 1970's. I am working with a Staedtler 9505 0.5mm mechanical pencil on 100 lb. Stratmore Bristol smooth paper.
I also use a hi-polymer Pentel eraser as well as a kneadable type by Design.

So now Fine Art America is now my main home as I now have a subscription to them, and now my own website.
