Hometown favourite Ly Hong won the Angkor Amateur Open Golf Championship for the second time in its seven-year run after producing two identical rounds of one under par 7 to gross 142 at the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap yesterday.

The Cambodian left-hander who is best remembered for a stellar second round performance in the Asian Tour Honda-Faldo Classic of 2012, the year he first won the Amateur Open by eight strokes, thwarted Amish Jaitha’s bid for an unprecedented back-to-back triumph.
Ly Hong (pictured, right), who represented Cambodia in the Indonesian edition of the SEA Games in 2011, is the first player to win the country’s flagship golf event more than once.
After a consistently good first round of 70, India’s Amish Jaitha sharing the same cart as Ly Hong on the second round circuit, carded four bogeys in the back nine.

Though he recovered with three birdies, one monster 20-metre putt in the 16th by Ly Hong turned out to be the crucial game changer. Ly Hong’s sound short game and putting stood by him all through the event. “I am very happy that I could maintain my consistency in both the rounds” Ly Hong, who won by four strokes ahead of Jaitha, told the Post.

“I had a steady first round, I played the first nine holes fairly well, but that indifferent back nine set me back a great deal, though I managed three birdies including the one in the final 18th” Jaitha said.
“It is a very well run event. I would like to comeback’’ said Jaitha, who went out with one handicap to Ly Hong’s four Arguably the best and most closely contested Open to date saw 120 local and international players battle it out over 36 holes for a wide range of prizesDivision one: the best net score was claimed by Phnom Penh golfer Pichmeta Peou with a two round total of 72 Stableford points.

In second place narrowly missing out on count-back also with 72 points was Calle Lund (Sweden) followed in third place by Siem Reap golfer Im Rahul with 71 points.
Lee Chew Fu (Malaysia) with a fantastic two round score of 83 Stableford points, the highest tally over all net divisions, topped the category ahead of Mohamad Hanafi (Singapore) with 79 Stableford points followed in third place by South Korea’s Dae Hun Han with 76 points.

This year saw the introduction of a seniors division with a best gross and three net prizes on offer.
The best gross was won by Australia’s Geoff Mclaws with strong rounds of 75 and 78 for a total of 153 (+9) The first net prize went to Steven Law Jin Seng (Malaysia) with 79 Stableford points.
In second place with 77 points was Tan Keng Wan (Singapore) pushing Jimmy Kong Tack Seng (Malaysia) into third.

In the ladies division, players were competing for a best gross prize and two net prizes.
Tevy Sareoun, Cambodia’s brightest young golf prospect claimed the gross prize with rounds of 91 and 86 for a two ound aggregate score of 177. First net was taken by Violy Pegels (Philippines) with 73 Stableford points. With 64 Stableford points Jimin Kim (South Korea) was runner up.

As much as $1,000 dollars was raised during the ‘SMART Challenge for Education’ with all winners going into a lucky draw for an iPhone 6 donated by SMART.
Proceeds will go to Family Care Cambodia.
“It’s been a fantastic three days had by all and we’re delighted with the response and feedback from all of the players.

The event has gone from strength to strength and although the prizes are fiercely contested the camaraderie and friendship shown among the competitors is what makes the event so special’’ said David Baron, AGR director of golf in a chat with the Post.

“Ly Hongs’s a worthy champion showing remarkable skill and consistency to post a total of 142.
The heavy overnight rain on Friday evening meant that the course was playing soft and very long.
Ly Hong has a short game that will rival many players in the paid ranks,” David Baron noted.
“In the three days preceding the event we had over 15cm of rainfall and a further 3cm on Saturday evening yet the course was presented in immaculate condition thanks to golf course superintendant Jim Gubricky and his team. The participation from local and international sponsors was very pleasing and I must pay a special thank you to lead sponsors Tiger Beer,” he said.

The seventh edition of the eagerly awaited Angkor Amateur Open Golf Championship tees off this Saturday at the Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap.
A full field of 120 international players, representing 14 countries will hit the fairways of the award winning course in a two-round competition that offers up to 20 prizes in four divisions.

Defending champion Amish Jaitha of India is back again, more determined than ever, to create history as the first player to retain the title since the inaugural Open in 2009.
This year’s field is arguably the strongest ever assembled with 15 players within a handicap bandwidth of 0-5, raising the spectre of a thrilling climax to the fight for the overall Gross Prize that also ensures Championship success.

The Kingdom’s most prestigious golfing event which has been fully subscribed like last year will be run in four divisions, offering amateurs of varying handicaps and skills a fair go in their chosen categories.

For the first time, a senior division for players aged 55 and over has been introduced.
Players with a handicap between 0-12 will figure in Division I while the second division is for players in the handicap range of 13-28. The women’s event will run concurrently.
Friday’s official practice round sets the tone for two competitive rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
A lavish welcome dinner, hosted by the event’s lead sponsors Tiger Beer, awaits the participants on Saturday evening at the Sokha Angkor Resort.

In addition to the free flow of Tiger Beer, players will be able to enjoy on-course cocktails mixed by Hard Rock Cafe Angkor, Fruit flavoured Ciders by Brunty’s and Aquarius sports drinks provided by Coca-Cola. Any player lucky enough to score a Hole In One on Hole Number 9 will drive away with a brand new BMW sponsored by BMW Cambodia. Thailand’s Thongpipat Rattanayanon emerged as the overall winner of the Cambodian leg of the Faldo Series Asia from the under-16 boys category by a widening 10 shots at the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap on Sunday.

The 14-year-old Thongpipat followed in the footsteps of two previous winners from Thailand, which has been sending out a succession of talented youngsters over the past few years.
Opening the first round on Saturday with a solid even-par 72, the Thai junior blew the field away in the second round with a course record-equalling six under par 66. His two round total of 138 (-6) left him 10 shots clear. In his blazing 66, Thongpipat fired eight birdies, five of which coming on the front nine.

After reaching the turn in 33 strokes, he showed remarkable calm to complete the tough back nine with no dropped shots, cruising home with six pars and three birdies. “Thongpipat stood out immediately when I met him on the range during the practice round. He is naturally talented and technically gifted young player with an excellent attitude to match,” AGR director of golf David Baron said. “He is a strong boy and at just 14 years old he is certainly a name to remember. I wish him every success in the grand final.”

“Yet again the Faldo Series Cambodia was a great success, showcasing some of the region’s future champions. I was very impressed with the way all the players conducted themselves throughout the event and, as always, I was blown away with the ability of some of the youngsters,” Baron added.
“Anyone shooting 66 at 14 is a rare talent, and its with thanks to platforms such as the Faldo Series Asia that such talent is given the opportunity to shine and take their game to the next level,” Baron, a member of the British PGA, said.

“The grassroots clinic conducted by PGA head professional Alan Martin was a huge success. It’s now our responsibility to further develop grassroots golf in Cambodia to ensure we see more home grown talent in next year’s event,” Baron said.
The boys U18 and 21 divisions, which were merged, produced a Thailand one-two, with Thanaphum Khanchitworakun claiming top honours by six strokes from runner-up Saranyapong Teeranon.
Thanaphum came out strong in the second round with a three under 69 that helped him comfortably claim the division.

The boys U16 division was won by Paolo Barro of the Philippines with scores of 78 and 74, six shots clear of Ariyawat Juprang of Thailand.
Winning the girls division and qualifying for the grand final was Jenjira Jinangkul (Thailand) with two solid rounds of 73 and 75 claiming a narrow two shot victory from runner up Soktaerodh Sean (New Zealand) who fought to the end with a gutsy final round 75, which was the low round of the day for the girls.

The honour of getting through to the Asia Grand Final at Missions Hills early next year as the Cambodian National qualifier went to Tevy Saroeun. Though Tevy did not have her A game with her this week, she is well equipped to work hard this summer and perform well in China next year.

Siem Reap, Cambodia: Junior golf development will be to the forefront when the fourth edition of the Faldo Series Cambodia Championship tees-off this weekend.
To be played over the award-winning, Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort course on June 13-14, the third leg of the 2015-16 Faldo Series Asia season has attracted entries from Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines and Thailand. However, it will be the performance of the Cambodian youngsters and the host club’s efforts to popularise the Royal and Ancient game that will capture local attention. Leading the challenge for Cambodia is Tevy Sareoun, who will be making her third consecutive appearance in the regional qualifying event that rewards its age-group winners with places in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, to be held at Mission Hills China next March.

David Baron, Director of Golf at the Siem Reap venue which is a Golf Facility Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation, said: “Tevy has been working hard on both her game and physical conditioning over the past 12 months and we wish her the best of luck.”
Baron said the opportunity for Tevy and her compatriots to compete in a tournament of the stature of the Faldo Series Cambodia Championship is critical to their progress.
“Since its inauguration in 2012, the Faldo Series Cambodia Championship has played a crucial role in helping to raise the profile of the Royal and Ancient game in a country where golf is still very much in its infancy,” he said.

Sir Nick Faldo, who will be present at the Grand Final, a World Amateur Golf Ranking event, said: “When we launched the Faldo Series Asia 10 years ago it was our hope not only to produce future champions but also to promote and develop the game in emerging golfing nations around Asia.
“I take tremendous pride in the fact that golf is starting to take off in Cambodia and that the course that I designed in Siem Reap is playing such a significant role in helping the game to grow.”
In the Angkor Golf Resort’s continuing attempts to spread the golfing gospel, Alan Martin, the club’s Head Professional, will conduct a clinic for competitors following the first round and will also stage a grassroots clinic for students of the nearby Family Care Centre located at the Phum Thnarl Primary School.

Baron said: “Junior golf development is something we feel strongly about and the Faldo Series provides a fantastic platform for talented junior golfers to develop and succeed in the game.
“This year we will be working very closely with the local community, schools and charity organisations with the goal of introducing Cambodian children to the game of golf.”
Supported by The R&A and Mission Hills and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the 2015-16 Faldo Series Asia campaign stretches over 11 months and will include a minimum of 21 events in 17 countries including, for the first time, Australia.

AGR taps Alan Martin as head pro

Siem Reap’s Angkor Golf Resort has snapped up PGA professional Alan Martin, a highly reputable coach from the St Andrews Resort, to enhance the guest experience at the award-winning Sir Nick Faldo-designed links and bolster its academy and grassroots development programs.

Almost 10 years as a pro, Alan Martin was looking for a new adventure at the start of 2015 and he has now got his way by joining the AGR team in June, hopping over to Cambodia from a one-month teaching position he last held at the Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur.
“Alan Martin is an excellent addition to the team and I’m looking forward to working with him.’’ said AGR’s director of golf David Baron, who is himself a member of the British PGA.

Martin appears eager for a new challenge.
“The Faldo Design Championship golf course is very impressive and when I visited it felt right . . . It was a similar feeling when I applied for the job in St Andrews,” he said in a statement made available to the Post. “Angkor Golf Resort is new and fresh and I’m excited to get started and looking forward to implementing my ideas and knowledge.

“Southeast Asia is a booming golf destination and a large part of the remit will be developing a new purpose built golf academy and driving range with an emphasis on growing the game from grassroots in addition to further developing the golf operation and service standards of the resort.’’
Alan Martin, whose amateur days came out of Eyemouth and Dunbar GC in Scotland, turned professional in 2006 and graduated from the British PGA Degree Program certified by the University of Birmingham in April 2010. Shortly after, he took up the position of head assistant professional at the Duke’s Course in St Andrews.

“As golf pro, the opportunity to work in St Andrews, the home of golf was a dream move. My first year in town and the 2010 British Open was just around the corner,’’ Alan Martin said.
In February 2014, a place on the Kohler Company Exchange Program took him to Kohler, Wisconsin, and to the American Club and Whistling Straits, host of 2010 and 2015 USPGA and 2020 Ryder Cup.
Martin applied for the Head Pro position at the Angkor Golf Resort while he was in Malaysia and made contact with David Baron and flew down to Siem Reap. “You could say right place at right time,’’ Martin said.

Cousin team win golf contest

They were affectionately branded the red-hot cousins from India and Amish Jaitha partnering Khusaal Thackersey proudly lived up to that praise by winning the inaugural Angkor Four-ball championship in a runaway fashion at the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap on Saturday.

Neither the scorching sun nor the hard-chasing pack could slow them down as one of the top fancies for the title, Jaitha (1 HCP) and Thackersey (4 HCP) produced two flawless rounds of 67 and 66 for an impressive 133 showing up 11 under par to win by a widening nine shots the first-ever paired event, which will now become a regular feature in the Kingdom’s annual calendar.

Saving five shots in the first round for a 67, Jaitha, who won last year’s Angkor Amateur Open on his first visit to Cambodia, was in good nick even as Thackersey was stringing along some good openings. The pair was even more aggressive in the second round closing out with a 66 that slammed the door shut on early contenders Paul Mcnally and David Branning who ended up with a two round total of 142, two under par and nine strokes behind the winners.
“We’re delighted for Amish and Khusaal, they thoroughly deserved their victory. They combined flawlessly and their experience and talent shone through,” AGR’s director of golf, David Baron told the Post yesterday. “They conducted themselves impeccably over the three-day event and are certainly a credit to the game. We look forward to welcoming them back to Angkor Golf Resort.

“We are pleased with the response to our first Pairs Championship. We had a strong field of local and international players numbering 60, which gives us a great platform to build on. It’s Important to us that the players not only experience a professionally organised event but they enjoyed their overall stay in Siem Reap,” said Baron.

The Cambodian pair of Sokhamony Tong and Pichmeta Peuo with 132 (-12) emerged as the Nett winners ahead of another local pair Heng Sang Wat and Im Reahul 133 (-11).
The prize for the best first round score, excluding the overall winners, went to Sim Sou Yong and Sothea with a net 66 while the second round honour in this category was picked up by Chris Black and Jimin Kim (67 net).

The event was supported by a host of sponsors including Tiger Beer, Coca-Cola, Hard Rock Cafe. Meanwhile, Raffles Grand D’Angkor provided top class food and beverage services.
Among attractive prizes offered in various categories was a range of luxury golf holidays provided by Raffles Grand D’Angkor, Anantara and Park Hyatt and Golf Equipment provided by Fenix Golf and Volvik.

One of India’s top non-professionals in 1999, Amish Jaitha, relived in bits and parts that old touch to produce steady rounds of 71 and 72 to emerge as the 2014 Angkor Amateur Open golf champion at the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap yesterday.

Now pursuing his family business of textiles in the Vietnamese city of Hanoi, Jaitha is the sixth new winner in the scroll of honour as he swept past three previous winners in the field – Ly Hong, Don Bland and Michael Moir.

“This is my first trip to Cambodia. I hadn’t won anything big for a long time and it was sweet,” Jaitha told the Post after receiving the glittering trophy and a host of other goodies as reward for his triumph from AGRs director of golf David Baron.
When he went out as the overnight leader with four birdies and three bogeys in his first round, Jaitha was up against a scorching sun and a bunch of players swooping on his slender lead.

“I had taken a few risks in the first round. But I decided to stick to my game plan and told myself that it is fairway green, fairway green and putts will drop,” added Jaitha.
It was at the par-five 13 that the heat of the contest alerted the Indian to be cautious and cut out the spectacular when defending champion Moir of Scotland fired an eagle to put pressure on the leader.
Jaitha’s response was swift and solid. He came up with a birdie on the next to retain the momentum and rode it home without much anxiety the rest of the way. His three birdies wiped out as many bogeys for a round of even par that was good enough to save the gravy.

“I think that birdie putt on the 14th was crucial because I had this feeling that, though I led, the rest were closing in,” said Jaitha, who clinched the title with the lowest total score of the annual competition’s five-year history.
After his championship hopes faded out, left-handed Cambodian Ly Hong, who was aiming to regain the title he had won in 2012, picked up as some consolation the top prize in Division A, which was decided on combined Stable-ford points.

His two-round 77 took him ahead of Britain’s Paul McNally and Singaporean Eddie Cho, who both finished at 76 and were separated on a six-hole countback.
Cambodia’s Tan Savun was the clear winner of Division B with 78 points while South Korea’s Kim Key Hoing topped Division C with 75 points.

The biggest ever field of 18 in the women’s event saw Gilda Madestomas of the Philippines lead all the way to her first significant victory since she took up the game in 1998. Rounds of 82 and 81 netted Madestomas 76 points, giving her a comfortable victory margin over Singapore’s Ho Ping Lian Mimi, who finished with 73.

“This is my best score and I am very happy. This is my first visit to Cambodia and it was fun. I liked the course and I would like to get back,” Madestomas told the Post.
Australian professional Scott Hend, the longest hitter on the Asian Tour and runner up in 2013’s Order of Merit, brought star value again this year to the showpiece.

He conducted a private clinic on pitching, chipping, putting and bunker play for the benefit of participants during Friday’s practice sessions and followed it up with a free clinic the next day.
“It is fun. The course is challenging and I feel good to be here,” said Hend.

Some of the players also pitched in for a worthy cause by taking part in the nearest-to-the-pin charity contest to raise funds for the Treak Community Center, which is situated about 4 kilometres from Siem Reap, serving families living in extreme poverty.

The centre, the motto of which is “Creating opportunities, not dependency”, carries out several social programs such as English classes, nursery, library, IT classes, microfinance projects, building projects and a community garden.
At the end of the prize distribution, Baron made a solemn announcement about the recent passing away of Emmet McHenry, a keen and a popular player in Cambodian golfing circles.

The sixth annual Angkor Amateur Open teeing off tomorrow at the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap has been fully subscribed, surpassing last year’s record turnout.
The strongest field of 126 ever assembled for the Kingdom’s blue-ribbon amateur golf event includes three past winners – American Don Bland, Cambodian Ly Hong and reigning champion Michael Moir of Scotland.

With players from 17 countries to swing into action, the race for the overall title will be as fierce as it will be exciting. Left-hander Ly Hong will lead the local charge in the company of 16 compatriots as he tries to recapture the title he won in 2012.
The talk of the contest is American Eddie Cho, who has a handicap of 2 and will be hoping to make that form count.

Division A has its strength in depth, with a dozen players holding handicaps ranging from 0 to 5 and 30 more players with handicaps below 8.
The largest group of 44 players falling into the 11-19 handicap bracket will contest Division B, while 22 players figure in Division C.
The women’s event has attracted a record 18 players, and all of a very competitive standard. Phnom Penh resident Aim Guilfoyle is among those fancied for the title, in a field filled with a number of seasoned Singaporean players.

The star attraction once again will be Australian professional Scott Hend, who will conduct a clinic for the benefit of the players during today’s practice session.
After a record 2013 season on the Asian Tour, Hend finished second on last year’s Order of Merit, claiming three titles and racking up a whopping $600,000 in prize money along the way.
“It is a mark of the stature of both the venue and the event that the Australian pro has always been eager to get back to AGR,” resort director of golf David Baron told the Post yesterday.
“In return for the hospitality shown, Hend is a willing ambassador for Siem Reap golf tourism while travelling the world on the professional circuit.”

He added: “I am delighted by the turnout and response we’ve had this year. In recent years the event has become well established and continues to grow each year.
“The Amateur Open is a professionally organised tournament on a world class course but we also focus heavily on ensuring the over-all hospitality and guest experience is memorable.
“We want guests to have fond memories of Cambodia when they return home and encourage their friends to visit the Kingdom,” added Baron, who is a member of the British PGA.

In addition to numerous value-added perks included in the player’s package, there are over $10,000 worth of prizes to compete for. These range from luxury all-inclusive golf holidays to Vietnam, Bali and Malaysia to an array of top-end golf equipment and goodies.
Away from the heat of the battle, also on the program is the Charity Challenge, with all donations going to a local charity organisation in Siem Reap province.

This year’s Angkor Amateur Golf Open is set to get bigger and better than ever before with the August 9-10 event at the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap almost fully subscribed, well before the entry deadline two weeks from now.

The expected line-up of 128 players will be a reflection of the event’s growing popularity among international amateur golf adventurers and Siem Reap’s global appeal as an exciting tourism sport destination.
“With a growing field of international players, it is important that we continue to enhance the event each year, and this year will be no different,” AGR director of golf David Baron told the Post yesterday.

Thailand’s rising star Putt Sridama shot a blistering second round 66 to set a new course record at the Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap yesterday, on his way to the overall championship in the Cambodian leg of the Faldo Series Asia, hosted by the Kingdom for the third straight year.
“I was very lucky today especially with my long putts,” said Sridama, who remained absolutely cool and calm on the links as he craftily poached seven birdies in that record score.

His only blemish, if it can be called that, was a bogey in an otherwise spotless day that followed his rather sedate first round 73.
Sridama’s 36-hole total of 139 netted the 10th-grade student both the U16 Boys title and the overall championship ahead of his compatriot Korapat Dhanvarjor, who produced a fiery 69 on the top his first round 74 for a two-round 143.

The two totally dominated an 11-player all-Thailand field to book their places in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen next March.
“I am looking forward to Mission Hills. I played there last year. It is a very difficult course, but I hope to do well this year,” Sridama, who has an impressive +2 handicap, told the Post.

Last year’s overall champion in Cambodia, Watcharasit Trachuentong of Thailand, had to rest content with the U21 Boys title. He carded 74 and 76 for a combined 150 that gave him victory by just one stroke over Channut Buntavong in a field of only four players, including two Cambodians, Thong Sokhamony and Peou Pichmeta, both of whom finished well behind the Thai pair.

However, there was still a silver lining in that dark cloud for Sokhamony, who managed to get a ticket to the Mission Hills Grand Final gave the best performance among the Cambodian trio in the fray, which also included 14-year-old Tevy Saroueun in the girls category.
A good second-round performance of 81 took Sokhamony to a 168 total, which was the closest to the winning score within his group.

The combined U16 and U18 Girls event produced a tight finish with the Thai pair of Kanokwan Yoddamnern and Jidapa Phongthanachalitkun tied with identical rounds of 72 and 71 for a total of 143. But a superior back nine score helped Yoddamnern pick up the top prize, though both of them qualified for the Asia Grand Final.
Meanwhile, South Korean 10-year-old Jang Chongwi bagged the youngest competitor recognition award.
AGR director of golf David Baron, who distributed the trophies to the qualifiers, earlier in the day conducted a grassroots clinic for 18 boys and girls from local charity organisation Build Your Future Today.

Young golfers from six countries will compete for a spot in next year’s Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills in China when the third edition of the Cambodian leg of the Faldo Series Asia tees off this Saturday at the award-winning Sir Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap.
Split into three different categories this year, the 25 golfers in the fray – 17 boys and eight girls – will vie for five Mission Hills tickets on offer.

The winner of the Boys U21 group and two qualifiers each from the Boys U16 and Girls sections based on the best 36 hole gross score will be eligible to take part in the ninth Asia Grand Final, which is a world amateur golf ranking event.
As a special gesture, six-time Major winner Faldo has offered a place in the Grand Final for the best performing Cambodian among the three in contention this year irrespective of their order of finish.
While Sokhamony Thong and Pich Meta will represent Cambodia in the Boys U21 category, 14-year-old Tevy Sareoun is among the eight contestants in the Girls competition.

It may be recalled that a similar special offer had been made to Cambodia’s lone competitor Seng Vanseiha in 2012 despite him finishing down the field. But for personal reasons the youngster could not make the trip.
“We hope to build on the success of the last two years and benefit more young golfers from Cambodia and neighbouring countries,” AGR director of golf David Baron told the Post yesterday.
Thailand heads the list of entries with 15. The others in the field are three Cambodians, three South Koreans and one each from Malaysia and the United States. Interestingly, there are also a pair of twins from New Zealand of Cambodian lineage.

The first round tees off at 9am on Saturday with the final round beginning at 8:30am on Sunday.
The 2013/2014 Faldo Series Asia schedule features a record 22 tournaments in 18 countries, including four in mainland China, two in India and others in the Philippines, Taiwan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Brunei, Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand. Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia are new additions to the ever growing list of Faldo Series venues.

The series is supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and Mission Hills and is endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Federation.
In keeping with the Faldo Series’ convention of encouraging grassroots development alongside top class competitive experience, the AGR will be organising a clinic for 20 students from the Siem Reap-based charity organisation Build Your Future Today (BFT).
Founded by a Khmer Rouge survivor, BFT is working to make life better for the locals.

Six-time Major winner Sir Nick Faldo will be watching closely the performances of local golfers, particularly teenagers Tevy Saroeun and Thong Sokhamony, who are expected to lead the Cambodian charge in the third edition of the Faldo Series Asia event lined up for Siem Reap’s Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort from July 11 to 13.

“I take enormous pride in helping the game take-off in non-traditional golfing nations. Seeing golf grow in popularity in Cambodia is tremendously rewarding for everyone involved in the Faldo Series,” said Sir Nick in a communication released to the Post on Monday.
“I’m greatly encouraged by the progress we have witnessed over the past two years since we launched the Faldo Series Cambodia Championship and I’ll be following closely the performances of the local players.”

In the girls section, 14-year-old Tevy Saroeun, being talked about as a fast emerging talent, is bound to garner lot of attention while Cambodian hopes among the boys will be pinned on 18-year-old Thong Sokhamony.

“I have strong hopes that Saroeun or Sokhamony can make the breakthrough for Cambodia this year by qualifying for the Grand Final. It would be a reward for the effort that they have put into their games,” said AGR’s director of golf David Baron. “Supporting junior golf is an underlying goal of ours, which is why we are delighted to continue our partnership with the Faldo Series Asia by once again hosting the event,” he added.

Players from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand, apart from local players, made up last year’s field. Though players from the Asia-Pacific region are expected to make the bulk of this year’s field, the event organisers are hopeful of an uptake in local participation.
For the first time, Cambodian juniors will be invited to take part in an unofficial age category so as to help them get valuable competitive experience.
A grass-roots clinic, which is almost an integral part of a Faldo Series event, affords the local student community the best chance to enjoy an introduction to golf.

Sir Nick Faldo’s global junior golf development initiative, the Faldo Series, which was launched 18 years ago, returns to Cambodia on July 11-14 at Siem Reap’s Angkor Golf Resort, which ranks among one of the best courses the six-time Major winner has designed all round the world.
In 2012, the Kingdom was brought into the Faldo Series network, which involves 40 tournaments in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 young golfers taking part each year.

The different category winners from each leg will gather for the grand finale at Mission Hills Golf Club in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen in March next year.
Amateur golfers aged between 12 and 21 are eligible to play to the Faldo Series event, which has a handicap limit of 28. The last date for entries is July 5.

Boys and girls born between 1993 and 2002 of any nationality can enter for a fee of $70.
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with the Faldo Series Asia event and host the Cambodian qualifying leg,” Angkor Golf Resort director of golf David Baron told the Post yesterday.
“Supporting any form of junior golf is an underlying goal of ours. The field will be made up of international junior players from the [Asia-Pacific] region and hopefully we can see an increased number of local participants this year.”

Baron is a member of the British PGA, who spends much of his spare time conducting free coaching classes for juniors and students in Siem Reap.
“I have strong hopes that one or both of our leading Cambodian players can make the breakthrough this year and qualify for the grand final,” said Baron. “This would be a timely reward for the effort that they have put into their games.”
One such player is Sokha Mony, who was a member of the triumphant Cambodia team at the recently held FCC Nations Cup.

Baron noted that this year, the Angkor Golf Resort would also be inviting Cambodian juniors to take part in an unofficial age category in order for them to gain valuable experience.
“The grassroots clinic will also continue. This is where we invite several local schools along to enjoy an introduction to golf,” he added.

Cambodia’s leading amateur golfer Ly Hong won the second edition of the winner-takes-all 2014 Liberty Cup after a two-round 78 gross score in the Stableford tournament which concluded at the Sir Nick Faldo-
designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap yesterday.
The left-handed Ly Hong, who had represented Cambodia in both the 2011 SEA Games and the 2010 Asian Games, shot a one-over-par 73 to lead the field in the first round which was played at the Phokeethra Country Club on Monday.

He handily kept the lead by firing an identical score at the AGR for a tally of 78 points under the fixed Stableford point system. The long-driving Ly Hong placed great importance on his short game and putting. “I’m very happy to have participated in Liberty Cup for the second year in a row. I really enjoyed myself and have built good relationship with other participants,” the 42 year old told the Post. “Second shots are very important, especially [at the] Angkor Golf Resort, and they turned out well for me.”

The Kingdom’s cup of joy overflowed after a similarly sounding Lee Hong emerged as the men’s nett winner, even as the 2013 champion Alex Yap of Malaysia could only finish third.
As many as 14 local golfers were in a field of 88 drawn from Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The event was jointly organised by Malaysia’s Liberty Golf Services and Cambodia-based PSD travel.

The 2013 Carlsberg Golf Classic champion Roszali Baharuddin of Malaysia finished tied for 11th. “It’s my first time to Cambodia and it’s an amazing country. My deepest gratitude to Carlsberg Malaysia for sponsoring me to participate in this great event,” he told the Post.
Meanwhile, Lillian Wong of Malaysia became the first women’s champion with a two-round score of 69 in a field that included eight of her compatriots.

The organisers invited BFT, a Siem Reap-based children’s charity organisation for a charity drive – a hole-in-one competition. While the kids enjoyed the golfing bit, they also entertained the tournament participants to a grand dance performance.
The key partners to the Liberty Cup were Transview Golf, Titoni, Carlsberg, RHB Bank, Angkor Golf Resort, Phokeethra Country Club, Casillero del Diablo and Vittel.

Siem Reap’s Angkor Golf Resort, which carries six-time Major winner Sir Nick Faldo’s creative imprint, will host the Cambodian leg of the Faldo Series Asia in either the last week of June or the first week of July.
After two successful seasons, the event returns to the Kingdom, which features among 14 countries hosting 19 tournaments through the year as British legend Faldo continues to paint a global picture for youth golf.

Apart from Cambodia, the 2013/2014 cycle includes events in mainland China (four), India (two), the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Brunei, Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand.
Traditionally the series concludes at Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, China, with the Asia Grand Final which is a world amateur golf ranking event.

The Faldo Series Asia is supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and Mission Hills. It is endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Federation.
Meanwhile, 70 of the most promising junior golfers in Asia and five winners from the 2013 Faldo Seires Grand Final at The Greenbrier in West Virginia will reach Mission Hills for the Eighth Asia Grand Final set for March 11-13.

“Last March, Luo Xue-Wen was crowned our first Chinese champion at the end of a landmark week for golf in China, where we also celebrated Guan Tianlang’s trip to Augusta,” Faldo said in a statement made available to the Post.
“I always look forward to returning to Mission Hills. It is their support, together with The R&A and ISPS Handa, which allows us to bring opportunity to the finalists and thousands of young Asian golfers each year.”

Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.

This September, Sir Nick will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in the United States. The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona, is also home to the Faldo Series USA and marks the next significant step in the programme’s history.

The award-winning Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap is well known as one of Sir Nick Faldo’s classy designs.
It is also the home of the six-time Major winner’s annual grassroots development initiatiative Faldo Series, the second edition of which concluded two weeks ago.
If the present director of golf at AGR, David Baron, carries out his own master plan for the development of the game, the resort could well house a purpose-built international golf academy in the near future. What is driving Baron is the passion he shares with the resort in promoting golf through junior initiatives.
“As a member of the PGA I am happy to be a part of this and willing to give my time and use of the AGR facilities to enthusiastic kids who want to learn,” Baron, who is from Yorkshire in the United Kingdom, told the Post in an exclusive chat yesterday.

With a wealth of experience both as a PGA professional and top level management executive behind him, Baron, who has extensively coached juniors in Hong Kong and China, is setting out to help Cambodian youngsters who are keen on developing their golf skills,
“I taught hundreds of junior golfers at the prestigious Hong Kong Golf Club. However, golf is more mainstream and accessible to kids in HK with a strong golf association backing,” the AGR director of golf pointed out.

Another well-structured golf body Baron had worked with was in China, where he opened a PGA-endorsed academy as the first Jack Nicklaus-branded academy.
The first phase of his long-term plan is already in motion. He has been spending his time in imparting basic golf lessons at the AGR to students from several Siem Reap schools to spread the game’s appeal among the youth.

In the weeks and months to come, Baron hopes to organise regular golf clinics and nine-hole tournaments in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh to follow up on the splendid efforts being made by former Australian amateur team captain Roger Hunt, who has been serving the Cambodian Golf Federation as an adviser for the past five years in a purely voluntary capacity.

Baron considers support from other clubs and the CGF vital to the success of his mission. Using golf, Baron is also helping a major health initiative by partnering with Cambodian Diabetes Association, encouraging the local NGO to bring kids to the resort for educational classes on the dangers, causes and prevention of diabetes.

A free golf clinic will be conducted for the benefit of these children with an emphasis on fitness. The leader of the NGO, Lorraine Fraser King, is fully supportive of this partnership.

Moir wins Angkor Amateur Open

It was 12 years ago that Michael Moir beat the freezing cold to win the Scottish Boys Golf Championship at his home town course of Royal Aberdeen.
At the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap yesterday, the Scot, now a proud owner of Bangkok-based sports-apparel brand Fenix, relived that teenage triumph in parts to grab top honours in the Angkor Amateur Open after a suspense-filled final round.

He had six layers of clothing when he made that piece of history as a teenager in sub-zero conditions. But on a hot, windless day in the city famous for Angkorian-era temples, he could have done with a bare minimum.
“Sure of that” Moir coyly told the Post in a clubhouse conversation after his two round gross 148 was good enough to edge out last year’s winner Cambodia’s Ly Hong, who was agonisingly one behind at 149.

The left-handed Ly Hong, who had carried the Kingdom’s aspirations both at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, found the drink instead of the fairway on the 18th and with it drowned his chances of forcing a possible play-off. The Scotsman came away safe and sound, though his second round five-over par was a pale shadow of his brilliant first round 71, which in fact matched an identical round by guest professional Scott Hend.

Australian Hend, who is indisputably the longest hitter on the Asian Tour, marked his inspirational presence with a second round 69 for a regal four under 140. The bar was so high that the Beat the Pro challenge, which carried some lucrative offers for the novices, was never quite on.
“This is my first visit to Cambodia. I like the course. Driving from the black tees makes a huge difference and I really enjoyed my golf and the hospitality,” Hend, who has made Flordia his home for the past 10 years, told the Post.

The fifth edition of this growingly popular amateur event will be long remembered for a happy coincidence of an Australian pro and a Scottish amateur raising its profile and polishing its image.
Hend was the first pro to wear Moir’s Fenix brand, which indeed sponsored the Australian in Siem Reap this year. In the end, it turned out to be a win-win for both Hend, who arrived from Russia two days before the event and Moir, whose father is a long time resident of Phnom Penh.
“I missed last year’s event, [so] I am happy to be here winning this year,” said Moir, who had a word of praise for some of the Cambodian golfers he played with.“I think some of the Cambodian players like Ly Hong are really good. The country needs some time to develop.”

While three past winners, Tim Orgill, Don Bland and Ly Hong lined up this year, the fourth, Stuart Puzzey could not make it.Despite that disappointment of losing out on the title, Ly Hong had his own rewarding moment when he was declared the winner of Division 1 on the basis of his net 139 ahead of Australia’s Mark Penfold, who also recorded the same total but was relegated to second on the count-back system.

With a net 142, Rahoul won Division 2 ahead of the 144 posted by Thong Sokhamony, who was Cambodia’s lone entry in the recently held Faldo Series event at the same venue.
Ros Sarin (net 141) came out on top in Division 3 ahead of Chua Meng Ann (144).

Karen Buenaventura of the Philippines was too good for her only rival for the women’s title, Rosemarie Gale of Australia. The Filipino posted an impressive two-round net of 143 to Gale’s 182.

“This year we set three new records,” said AGR Director of Golf David Baron.
“We had the largest number of entries ever – well over 100. We had the largest number of nationalities represented at 14 and we had the largest number of repeat guests.”

THAI TEENAGER TAKES FALDO SERIES TITLE IN CAMBODIA WINNERS ALSO HAIL FROM MALAYSIA AND HONG KONG

1 July 2013: Watcharasit Trachuentong from Thailand claimed a narrow victory in the second Faldo Series Cambodia Championship at Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap. The 17-year-old was one of two Thais to qualify for the Asia Grand Final in China along with winners from Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Trachuentong (Boys’ Under-21) fired rounds of 72 and 73 on the Faldo Design course in Siem Reap to finish tied on one over par with overnight-leader Aaerishna Shahsthy (Boys’ Under-16) of Malaysia. As age-group winners, both players will join Sir Nick Faldo for the eighth Grand Final at Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen but it was the Thai teenager who claimed the overall trophy thanks to a stronger final round.

The girls’ division also went to a count-back with 16-year-old Andrea Au from Hong Kong edging Thailand’s Onkanok Soisuwan, 12, to the win. However both girls also qualify for the World Amateur Golf Ranking event at Mission Hills next March.

The second Faldo Series Cambodia Championship featured a range of nationalities from Cambodian to Indonesian to five players from New Zealand. In a bid to grow golf in the local community, the tournament also involved school-children from Siem Reap who enjoyed a free coaching clinic before watching the competitors in action.

10 May 2013: Sir Nick Faldo has announced that his global golf development programme will return to Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap in 2013. Golfers from across the region will compete for a spot in the Asia Grand Final when the second Faldo Series Cambodia Championship tees off on June 29-30.

“We hope to build on the success of our inaugural event at Angkor Golf Resort and benefit more young golfers from Cambodia and neighbouring countries,” said Faldo, who designed the course in Siem Reap and is currently overseeing another 36-hole project in the capital Phnom Penh. “Holic and his team put on a great event in 2012 that combined top-class tournament experience for talented golfers with unique grass-roots activities for kids from the local community.”

Boys and girls aged 12 to 21 will compete over 36 holes on the award-winning Faldo Design course, an Asian Tour venue located close to the world-famous Angkor Wat temples.

With the field divided into age-groups – two for boys and two for girls – the four winners will qualify for the eighth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final. This World Amateur Golf Ranking event will be hosted by the six-time Major Champion at Mission Hills Golf Club in China next March.

Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.

In September 2013, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America. The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona is also home to the Faldo Series USA and marks the next significant step in the programme’s history.

The 2013/2014 Faldo Series Asia schedule features a record 19 tournaments in 15 countries, including four in mainland China, two in India and others in The Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Brunei, Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand.

The Faldo Series Asia is supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and Mission Hills. Malaysia ‘s pioneering golf travel agency, Liberty Golf Services, had organised its own tournament series with its inaugural leg in Siem Reap, Cambodia on 28^th till 31^st March 2013. Teaming up with the local renowned golf operator, PSD Travel, the event proved to be a success.

Branded as Liberty Cup™, this event was held at the prestigious Angkor Golf Resort, a FALDO design course where it hosted 40 golfers from Malaysia, Cambodia, France and Australia. Despite the soaring heat, the players battled it out for the 2 day tournament on a System 36 format. The players were also taken to visit the Angkor Wat temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The organiser’s general manager, Mr Ng Eu Shen said “We’re happy with the turnout of the group size despite it being marred by the speculation of date-clashing with Malaysia’s 13^th General Election.

We were able to showcase our expertise in managing golf tournaments abroad fused with good course selection, impeccable hospitality, ground logistics, F&B and local culture – precisely what golf travellers are looking for”.

Official timekeeper & sponsor Titoni, represented by Mr Tham Onn Chuan who is the CEO of ATG Watch said “I’m so amazed with the level of maintenance by Angkor Golf Resort. From tee to green, it played to great championship standards”. Another sponsor who played in the tournament, Mr Toh Hock (President of Shuzi Asia), was very impressed with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) feature that was added to the tournament. “I’m glad to be part of this tournament series. Not only having played in a magnificent golf course like Angkor Golf Resort but also to do charitable cause to local Treak Village – located just 20 minutes from town centre”.

A charity shootout in the form of a 25 yard chipping contest (Nearest to Pin) was carried out by ConCERT – a non profit enterprise involved in community development for orphanages, day centres, schools, agriculture cultivation, vocational training and health + hygiene. Andrew Ng of Golf Malaysia publication won the contest by flopping the ball onto the island green and into the hole.

The tournament concluded with Mr Alex Yap Chung Chai being the crowned champion of the Cambodia Leg. The 6 handicapper who shot 78 points over 2 days will be hosted to defend his title Siem Reap golf course in 2014, courtesy of Liberty Golf Services.

IBC Legends of Golf

A team consisting of His Excellency Cham Prasidh, Meas Seng and Chhor Marith won the 2012 IBC Legends Cup at Angkor Golf Resort on 10^th November.

Meas Seng, HE Cham Prasidh, Bretton Sciaroni, Alphons Mensdorff, Chhor Marith, Rami Sharaff.

A scintillating 7 under par 65 score playing a Texas Scramble format edged out a team comprising of Ly Hong, Johannes Backman and Gregory Tugenhadt by one shot after scoring a 66.

The rich vein of form continued with His Excellency wining the Nearest the Pin award on hole 17 and Chhor Marith wining the Longest drive on hole 6.

Thai Thanadol springs surprise.

In a rousing finish fit for the theatre, Thailand’s Thanadol Sangkoranee emerged as the Boys’ U21 winner of Cambodia’s leg of the Faldo Series Asia at Siem Reap’s Angkor Golf Resort yesterday. After ending the second round in a statistical tie at 142 with Nick Ang Xi Ee of Malayisa, Thanadol was awarded the win on the strength of his better score on the day over 18 holes.
From the moment the Thai stepped out yesterday morning in the company of compatriot Sitipong Wiangchanok and overnight leader Xi Ee, it was a three-way contest for supremacy. While Sittipong began to dawdle midway, Xi Ee and Thanadol were battling every yard of the course.

The climactic 18th hole saw unbearable drama as Xi Ee’s hopes of an outright win were buried in a bogey even as Thanadol produced an amazing approach shot from the fairway to set up a birdie and finish the hole with aplomb.

The figures told the truth and conveyed the emotions far better. Xi Ee’s 70 and 72 counted the same as Thanadol’s 72 and 70, but it was the Thai aggressor’s two-under-par second round effort which clinched the deal. Xi Ee’s two birdies on the 13th and 14th cancelled out his bogeys on the third and 18th. Thanadol on the other hand birdied the 8th, 10th, 16th and 18th holes, while overdoing the 11th and the 17th.

It could not have been much closer in the Boys’ U16 event, which was won by first round leader Kim Dong Hyun, who shot a fiery 67 yesterday for an overall 139. But the South Korean had to do everything in his power to hold at bay a spectacular surge by Thailand’s Nitihorn Thippong, who tantalisingly produced a matching 67 to go down by one stroke, having gone round in one-over-par on Tuesday.

While Kim reeled off seven birdies to soften two bogey blows, the Thai challenger conjured a magical eagle on the par-five 16th to add to his four birdies. His only blemish came from a 10th hole bogey.

As was widely expected, Asha Lakshme Balakrishnan took the honours in the Girls’ U21 class with an impressive one-under-par 71 for a 144 total, finishing well ahead of her compatriot Celine Lim Shwu Ling (153). The Malaysian winner had the honour of firing the tournament’s first eagle on the opening day when she landed the prized bird on the par-five 13th.
All the three winners – Thanadol, Kim and Balakrishnan – were awarded the Faldo Series Asia passage certificates to the Asia Grand Final, which will be held at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzen, China, next March.

Cambodia’s only participant, Seng Vanseiha, who put up a vastly improved performance in the Boys’ U21 second round with a 74 for an overall 153, may have been disappointed with himself, but he had reasons to be happy at the end of it all.
The Faldo Series Asia presented Seng Vanseiha a special invite to participate in the Asia Grand Final in line with Sir Nick Faldo’s stated principle of having a competitor from every country in China.
Meanwhile, the Angkor Golf Resort extended an invitation to the Boys’ U16 winner Kim Dong Hyun to participate in next year’s Angkor Amateur Open.

It was a walk in the park for Malaysia’s Ng Yu Kai, victor in the U12 category which was played under the Stableford format. The winner accounted for 34 points in the second round for a total of 61. Paqo Barro of the Phillipines was a long way behind in second among just four competitors.
The Chief Executive officer of the Faldo Series, Tom Phillips, hailed the Cambodian leg as a grand success and praised the organisational excellence of the Angkor Golf Resort management. “I am confident that this event will improve year on year and will help more and more Cambodian children to access the game,” he said.

Away from the competition, a grass-roots golf clinic for students from the International School of Siem Reap was conducted by Roger Hunt, official referee for the two-day event and an advisor to the Cambodian Golf Federation. The AGR General Manager Adam Robertson confirmed to the Post that such grass-roots clinics will be held on a regular basis.

Thai, Malaysian share lead at Faldo Series Asia event.

On a warm and windless day, Malaysia’s Nick Ang Xia Ee and Thailand’s Sitipong Wiangchanok shared the first round spotlight in the Boys U21 section of Cambodia’s inaugural Faldo Series Asia event with an impressive two-under-par 70 at the Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap yesterday.
Teeing off from different sections in the morning, the two returned to the clubhouse with the day’s two best scores though both endured some adverse moments with their short game.

The Malaysian was seemingly steadier than his Thai challenger. Xia Ee ticked off birdies in the fifth, eighth and 16th holes but his green approach and putting let him down at the sixth, where he ended up with his only bogey of the round.

Sitipong, who ranks among Thailand’s best rising stock of young golfers, brushed aside his third hole bogey with six birdies. Up to the 14th, he held on to that splendid touch but then came a disastrous 15th where he double bogeyed. He bogeyed the next as well to let his grip on the round slacken a great deal.

Another strong Thai contestant, Thanadol Sangkoranee, produced an even par 72 to shadow the joint leaders in third place. The next best effort in a field of 10 was a 77 by Channut Buntavan.
Cambodia’s lone entry, Seng Vanseiha, who had represented the Kingdom at the Asian Games in Guangzhou and SEA Games in Indonesia last year, was further down the field with an unremarkable round of 79.

One of Cambodian Golf Federation’s long time advisers, Roger Hunt, felt that an event of this stature would have a positive impact in development of golf. When asked whether he was happy that there was at least one Cambodian competitor or sad that there were not a few more, Roger Hunt said: “We certainly need more players in such tournaments. I am happy that at least a start has been made.”

The Boys U16 event was also a tight affair with South Korea’s Kim Dong-hyun parring all 18 holes for a 72. Trailing the leader in joint second were two aggressive Thai golfers, Sirislip Phubodi and Nitithorn Thippong, with 73s.

“It was a very tight first round. An under-par score at this level of competition was really impressive. The U16 scores have also been good. We are heading for an exciting finish,” Angkor Golf Resort General Manager Adam Robertson told the Post yesterday.
Despite a rough and tumble round marred by a couple of bogeys and double bogeys, Malaysia’s Asha Lakshme Balakrishnan poached a few birdies to nearly balance the books, ending the round with a leading score of one-over-par 73 in the Girls event.

“I could have done a lot better,” was Balakrishnan’s take on the round. Her nearest rival in a small field of six is compatriot Celine Lim Shwu Ling at 76. The others shot 80s or worse.
The four-player U12 event was dominated by Malaysia’s Ng Yu Kai Victor, who heads her three rivals at 27 points in the Stableford format. One of three Barro siblings from the Phillipines, Paqo, was placed second with 20 points while his sister Laia was fourth on seven, one point behind Jerry Wijaya of Indonesia.
Professional golfer and instructor Tony Maloney, who is based in Kuala Lumpur conducted a Players Clinic at the driving range as a well-regarded side-show in the morning.
