I just returned from Target and did pretty well with my coupons today! I did pick up a couple of other items that I didn't have on my coupon list from earlier today.

The extra items I picked up were pacifiers (with a MAM coupon) for $1.99 for a baby shower gift and I printed out a couple Coffee Mates B1G1 coupons to make each bottle $1. The Poise wash was free with a coupon that came out on 3/10. If you have the $3/1 Poise Feminine Care Item ETS 3-10-13 SS x4/20, Target has those items in stock again and you'll be able to pick those up. Also, I was up late last night coughing again so some Target brand NyQuil is definitely needed tonight!

I paid $14.48 and saved $35.21. The discount also includes the 5% off the total bill for using my Target Red Card.

Me and Erik now have Soup and Salads for lunch for the next couple of days and I'll be able to catch some sleep tonight with the medicine I picked up!

Also, I couldn't find the Brown Rice Triscuits. Usually when a new item comes out, companies will send out coupons before every store stocks them. I'm keeping these items on my Target list and check back next week to see if they stock them.

Today I went over to Dollar Tree to pick up my papers, but I'm also there to coupon. Dollar Tree now accepts Manufacturer's Coupons! Their coupon policy allows for 2 Internet coupons per day per household, but each Internet Coupon must have a different serial number.

So not only am I picking up my coupons, but I figured out this deal too:

I found this manufacturer's coupon at the Target Coupon website for $1 off a box of Post Shredded Wheat Cereal. Target's coupon website has 2 types of coupons for you to print, manufacturer's coupons and Target Coupons. You can read about how to tell the difference before you print at totallytarget.com here. Typically, I would print off 2 coupons since the Target website will allow that, but the serial numbers are the same on the coupons and Dollar Tree Coupon policy does not allow that. You would be able to use 1 at a time though.

The Post Shredded Wheat Cereal coupon would make the 9.25 oz box FREE! Just pay the tax.

So I bought 6 papers and a box of cereal for $6.04!

A Year and a New Goal

Ok, I admit it's been about a year since I've really couponed and focused on using the stash in the basement. Now that I'm getting low on shampoo, toilet paper, and other necessities that can cost an arm and a leg, I've gotta get back into working those deals!

Within this last year, I've overhauled our diet to include more fresh and less processed foods. I wouldn't have been able to use coupons for these items anyway so I figure I wasn't missing out on saving tons of money like in the past. Because of this, I won't be focusing as much on all the foods that are super cheap just because I can get them for a decent price. Personal items and household items are the items that are going to be my main focus. You'll probably see a few cereal deals, granola bars, etc as items that I'll pick up too but I'm definitely going to focus on more fresh foods for the family.

So as a first step, last week I went and bought 6 papers from the Dollar Tree store for the coupons and clipped for the first time this year. You have to start somewhere - right? I think that amount (or even probably less!) is about right for a family of four, but I may adjust to even less sometime in the future. Last year when I quit couponing, I bought 10 papers a week for the coupons. That was just too much. Yes I received alot of free items but when I really think about it, it has taken me a year to deplete some of the stuff that I had stocked up on!

So my goals for this new year of couponing are to realistically buy only what we'll use, minimize time spent couponing, and to help friends do the same. Join me in learning the basics of couponing from the very start!

Hip2save.com posted a link to the Yoplait Facebook page that has a $0.30 off 1 Lactose Free Yoplait Yogurt coupon. When you use the coupon at King Soopers this week, the coupon will double to make the yogurt free!

At the Yoplait Facebook page, click on "Coupons" on the left side of the page. You should see the image to the right. You can print the coupon 2 times if you click on "Coupons" again after your first print. ~~Just log into Facebook on each computer you have and you'll be able to print the coupon 2 times from each computer you have.~~ Edit: I could only get the coupon to print from 1 computer. Here's why I'm interested in the coupons:

The red asterisk (*) means I expect to find this for free with a sale.

Go to the Target coupon website and find the $2/2 Activa yogurt coupon to print out. You'll be able to combine it with the Manufacturer's coupon in the SS insert and get cheap or free 4 pack of Activia yogurt. Look for the Bodega savings banner on the Target Coupon web page (along the top) to find a coupon for Arm & Hammer laundry detergent. Right now the Bodega items are on clearance so I expect these to be a great purchase within the next couple of weeks.

I love John Frieda shampoo and conditioner and can usually find a pretty good sale with the $3/2 coupon.

The Raisin Bran coupon will make for some cheap cereal. It's a high value coupon for cereal.

SeaPack small boxes of popcorn shrimp are around $1.30 at Walmart. For a yummy snack for the kids or even part of a dinner, you'll pay around $0.50 for a box with coupon.

The got2b coupon is a high value maybe we'll get a buy one get one sale where we can use 2 coupons to make them free!

Target also frequently puts out Target coupons for mascara, so with Manufacturer's coupon and Target coupon, you'll pay around $1 for Rimmel Mascara.

Denver Post Sunday Coupon Preview 1/15

In tomorrow's Sunday Denver Post there will be 1 coupon insert according to the SundayCouponPreview.com. Remember, coupons are regional and we may or may not get all of these coupons and the value may or may not be the same. As for the Ortega, I need some cans of Green Chili's to make Chili Con Carne and other things and I've run out of stock. I hope King Soopers has a sale on them so I can stock up! (I hope King Soopers has the sale because the coupons will double to make it $0.50 off each can.)

Lastly, the Jolly Time popcorn coupon should make the Poporn pretty inexpensive. I've gotten these for free years ago, but lately I've been paying around $0.50 for a box of 3 with coupon.

Are You Clipping Every Coupon From The Paper?

Are you a couponer who goes through the coupons from the newspaper and keeps only the coupons that you think you will use? If you are, you are missing out on some money making opportunities.

Consider buying a product that you don't use, just to reduce the total cost of items that you do need. First, let's explain how you can make money at the register. Often, there are coupons in the newspaper inserts or coupons that you can print online that are valued more than the product costs at stores. For example, in my Walmart shopping trip yesterday I bought 7 Old Spice Body Washes for Men. Here's what the deal looked like:

Buy 4 Old Spice (price match from Alberton's through Tuesday) $1.50 each
Use 4 $2/1 from 1-1-PG
Final Price: $0.50 money maker each for a total of $2!

I made $0.50 per item. Walmart will apply that $0.50 towards other items that you are buying. Now, the boys in my house actually like Old Spice Body Wash, so it's a win-win situation for me. But let's say that they don't like it. Would I still buy it? You bet! I'm making $3.50 for all 7 items. That paid for the 8-pack of Yoplait Yogurt that I bought yesterday to make those 8 items FREE.

Next, let's talk about which stores do you shop at that give overages? Here in Denver, Walmart is the only store that gives overages. It states it in their coupon policy. (Here's the Walmart coupon policy if you would like to see it.) The pertinent part of the policy is:

If coupon value exceeds the price of the item, the excess may be given to the customer as cash or applied toward the basket purchase.

That is the reason I priced matched to Albertson's for the Old Spice deal. If I had gone to Albertson's, I would have gotten the Body Wash for free, but wouldn't have made the $0.50 on each one.

Whenever I find a coupon that exceeds the price of the item in a store's sales flyer, I take the flyer with me over to Walmart to price match the item. When I price match, I always have the flyer with me that has the sales price and also a printed copy of the Walmart Coupon policy. You may be challenged by the cashier about the overage, and you should be prepared to 'teach' the cashiers about Walmart policies. Don't let this intimidate you. Yesterday the cashier didn't know about the overage policy and she called over a Customer Service Manager to confirm that they apply the overage to the rest of the order. The CSM confirmed their policy and even chatted with me about coupons a little.

By keeping every coupon, not necessarily clipping every coupon, you will save even more money at the register. I know it takes time to clip and organize coupons, but since you are already clipping the coupons that you will use it doesn't take too much more effort to hold onto the other coupons from the newspaper. (Check out my article about organizing coupons to see other options that may work for you.)

I hope I've convinced you that you should keep all coupons even if you don't think you would buy the product. Even if you have one coupon for a product that will give you an overage, it will make a difference in the total cost of your shopping trip. A dollar is a dollar, right?

The last thing we need to talk about is what should you do with all the products that you're buying and aren't going to use. Donate! Twice a year I donate to 9Cares Colorado Shares to purge the items I don't use. You can also donate to FISH, or a Shelter that you would like to help out. I love telling people that I've received all the items I'm donating for free because I use coupons!

Walmart Trip 1/8 Saved 80%!

Today I went to Walmart to pick up some items that were cheap or that I could make money on. You can make money at Walmart by using a coupon that's value is more than the product. You can read about Walmart's Coupon Policy here. There were 3 items that you'll need to price match from Albertson's - Nivea Lipcare, Charmin Basic Toilet Paper and the Old Spice Body Wash. I had 2 - $2 off the Charmin Basic TP from a 'coupon machine' in the TP aisle at King Soopers.

Quick Trip To Safeway 1/8

In my effort to track my grocery store spending (read my New Year's Resolution here), I have to tell you about a deal at Safeway that I took advantage of this evening. Unfortunately, the deal is only for today, so it's probably not something you would want to copy.

Progresso canned soup was on sale for Buy 2 Get 2 free. Most cans were $2.19 each.
I used: $1/4 Progresso Soup, exp. 3/3/12 (GM 01/08/12)
Each can's final price was $0.84 each.

I bought 24 cans, the total price I paid was $22.12 and I saved 60%.

Tomorrow will be a better day. I'm planning on going to Walmart to do some price matching. My next post will be my Walmart list with some GREAT deals!
