Sotomayor member of Belizean Grove, female version of Bohemian Grove

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor last year accepted an invitation to join the Belizean Grove, an elite but little-known women’s-only group.

Founded nearly 10 years ago as the female answer to the Bohemian Grove — a secretive all-male club whose members have included former U.S. presidents and top business leaders — the Belizean Grove has about 125 members, including Army generals, Wall Street executives and former ambassadors.

Sotomayor’s membership in the New York-based group became public Thursday afternoon in a questionnaire submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Since then, the group has been deluged with press calls, said its founder, Susan Stautberg, who explained that “we like to be under the radar screen.”

The group — which on itswebsitedescribes itselfas “a constellation of influential women who are key decision makers in the profit, nonprofit and social sectors; who build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships in order to both take charge of their own destinies and help others to do the same” — hosts periodic meetings around New York, as well as an annual off-the-record three-day retreat in Central or South America at which its members attend cocktail parties with U.S. diplomats and host-country officials and participate in panel discussions on public policy and business affairs.

At last year’s retreat in Lima, Peru, for instance, Sotomayor and the other members attended a reception at the American Embassy with U.S. Ambassador to Peru P. Michael McKinley and several female members of the Peruvian cabinet, Stautberg said.

Sotomayor, a federal appellate judge, gave a presentation on the challenges the judiciary faces in maintaining its independence from the legislative and executive branches.

“It was really about how you need to have that balance of power and that the judiciary needed to have the ability to really be itself and not be influenced politically,” said Grove member Cathy Allen, the chief executive officer of a financial services firm inSantaFe, N.M. Allen said she didn’t take notes on the speech and added, “Everything we do is off the record.”

In a quote on the group’s website, Sotomayor called the Grove “an extraordinary grouping of talented, compassionate and passionate women. I am deeply honored to have been included. The joy of participating in your fun in Peru was wonderful.”

Mary Pearl, a dean and vice president at New York’s Stony Brook University, called the talk “inspiring” and said she came away from it impressed by Sotomayor’s “profound respect for the Constitution and our legal framework in this country.”

The two became friends through the group, which, Pearl said, is kind of the point of it.

“It’s hard if you’re someone who’s a type ‘A’ personality, who’s achieved a lot and who may be in the public eye — it’s hard to make friends, so it’s just a mutually supportive wonderful experience. We get together just for socializing and also just for intelligent conversation,” said Pearl, adding that the group charges a couple hundred dollar membership fee and also participates in charitable work.

But it’s not open to just anyone.

“The way you become a member is people recommend friends to join and we have an advisory board (that makes the final determination),” said Pearl, who is a member of that board. “You have to have achieved something, but you have to have a really good personality, too. You could be the richest person in the world with a resume that goes on for 50 pages, but if you don’t have a sense of humor, then people won’t want you to be a member.”

Pearl called it “elite in the sense that anything that has more people who want to be in it than are in it is elite. But it’s not elite in that people from all walks of life who are interesting can become a members.”

An out-dated memberliston the group’swebsitelists members including former General Services Administration Director Lurita Doan, Army General Ann E. Dunwoody, former Goldman Sachs partner Ann Kaplan and IKEA executive Pernille Spiers-Lopez.

According to Stautberg, a former Washington bureau chief for Westinghouse Broadcasting, Sotomayor was recommended by Mari Carmen Aponte, a former Carter administration official who later served as Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration in Washington.

Sotomayor “came to some events and got to know some of the members” and then was approved by the advisory board, said Stautberg, who called Sotomayor “a very bright, very decent, very nice woman.”

Stautberg said she hoped Sotomayor could still be a member of the Grove if she’s confirmed to the court, though the WhiteHousedid not respond to questions about her plans.

And Stautberg brushed off a question about whether the Grove’s women-only membership could generate controversy as the Bohemian Grove’s exclusively male membership did in 1979, when the state of California sued the club for not hiring femaleemployeesas its facility there.

Stautberg stressed that male “spouses, partners and adult children” are permitted to go on the optional post-retreat expeditions (last year’s was to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley) and said that even though “no man has ever applied to be a member. … If they did, we would certainly vote on it.”

The American Bar Association’s judicial codes states that it is inappropriate for judges to belong to groups that “invidiously” discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion or national origin.

On the questionnaire, Sotomayor wrote that “I do not consider the Belizean Grove to invidiously discriminate on the basis of sex in violation of the Code of Judicial Conduct.”

Whileconspiracy theoristshave cast the Bohemian Grove as a cog in a shadowy right-leaning globalist cabal, Pearl said the Belizean Grove is nonpartisan and stressed, “There’s nothing nefarious about it.”

Why Did the Huffington Post Censor the Jewish Obama Hate Speech Video?

So: remember that terrible, shocking video of the awful frat-tards spewing racial epithets, screaming and trashing President Barack Obama in ways so debase, they're really not even worth quoting here? Well, The Huffington Post actually censored it. Why?

Max Blumenthal, the filmmaker who took the video, contributed to The Huffington Post previous to this, so it's not a one-off thing, nor a user-submitted video (like the Euna Ling issue at Current TV). He's a contributor. And he notes of his experience:

Within a few hours, I received an email from a Huffington Post administrator informing me he had scrubbed my video from the site. "I don't see that it has any real news value," the administrator told me. "For me it only proves that one can find drunk people willing to say just about anything. Especially drunk, moronic people." For the first time, the premier clearinghouse for online news and opinions had suppressed one of my posts.

...Bringing new meaning to the word "clearinghouse," certainly. Any request for comment has had us referred to Blumenthal's post on Phillip Weiss's blog regarding the fiasco, something it now officially is.

Much of the outrage over the video - which we've re-posted below - falls in line with what The Huffington Post issued: that the guys in the video are drunk, that the video could be a crafted political set-up used to further an agenda, that the entire thing is too outrage-provoking to consider as anything but outright propaganda. That's ridiculous, especially for The Huffington Post, though.

Even though they're mostly just used to aggregating the news of others (or as 30 Rock so nicely put it: telling us what we already know), they're a news site, and this is news, and it's their job to - at the very least - provide some kind of context for this kind of thing. The video's clearly not fake or staged in any regard: why would these very clear faces expose themselves to the world like that? It's the worst kind of "viral" there is. And yes, they're drunk, but as we all well know by now, being drunk doesn't necessarily invalidate the kinds of things you say when you're trashed. Sometimes, in fact: the opposite.

If anything, The Huffington Post's deletion of the video looks like a political maneuver on their part. Maybe they just don't want to be a part of something so hot-button as this, or don't want to chance it on any of the risk that this story may or may not hold. Or it could be agenda-based.

It's probably none of those things. It's probably the equivalent of some tight-assed S & P person over there who thinks they're taking the initiative with their job. What we want to know: Who is this person censoring things over at the Huffington Post? And what would Ariana think?

Two Jews Spy on US for CUBA for 30 years (Walter Kendall Myers and Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers) State Department Employee Spy Case

A married couple was accused Friday of spying for Fidel Castro's Cuba for 30 years while the husband was a top intelligence analyst at the State Department.

Walter Kendall Myers, known as "Agent 202" to the Cubans, and his wife Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers, "Agent 123" and "E-634," were nabbed at their home off Embassy Row following an undercover FBI sting.

They allegedly admitted their treachery spanned decades, U.S. officials said.

"It's a serious compromise," said one U.S. official, who compared it to the breaches by Pentagon spy-for-Cuba Ana Montes and FBI agent-turned-Russian spy Robert Hanssen.

Kendall Myers was recruited by Cuban spies in the Communist regime's New York City mission in 1978 while he worked at State's Arlington, Va., language school. The Ph.D. expert on Europe also taught at Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and George Washington Universities.

He worked his way up the career ladder - though his Cuban handlers urged him to join CIA - and eventually landed as a Europe analyst in State's Bureau of Intelligence and Research. There, he had one of the highest security clearances: Top Secret-Sensitive Compartmented Information.

Prosecutors said in the year prior to his 2007 retirement, Myers downloaded the crown jewels on Cuba - 200 "sensitive or classified intelligence reports."

"He had access to everything on the computers," the flabbergasted U.S. official told the Daily News, adding that the scope of what he passed to Cuba's spy service is unknown.

They received instructions using a shortwave radio receiving "numbers station" broadcasts from Havana they decoded with a key. Gwen Myers would sometimes pass secrets to Cuban agents - one codenamed "GOD" - by exchanging shopping carts in a grocery, court papers alleged.

Unlike CIA traitor Aldrich Ames, whose betrayal cost the lives of many U.S. "assets" in Russia, the Myerses are not believed to have gotten anyone killed.

"They weren't doing it for money - they were true believers with an affinity for Castro," the U.S. official said.

Myers boasted to the FBI operative he got "lots of medals" from the Cubans, and the couple - who met with handlers in New York and secretly visited Havana many times - spent an evening with Castro in 1995.

The couple has hired ex-Bush White House lawyer Bradford Berenson, who declined comment.

Last month Myers was repudiated by the State Department after calling Britain's relationship with the U.S. "totally one-sided."

"We typically ignore them and take no notice," he told a conference. "It's a sad business."

Michelle Obama is now weighing in on the Sotomayor nomination, and I think it will prove a serious political mistake, since she is reverting back to her "me too" campaign mode, in that she emphasizes both race and the anonymous "they" who are not nice or not sufficiently accommodating to the Other.

So Michelle Obama describes the fear that Sotomayor felt at Princeton — and its lasting effects to this day — and then compares it, of course, to Michelle's own ambiguous feelings toward the same Princeton campus (cf. Michelle's thesis for the details), that one is willing to put up with for the education and prestige it gave, but does not really like for the presence of apparently so many stuck-up, rich, preppy kids and their ubiquitous exclusive campus culture.

Three or four observations:

Many Americans were terrified about our first year in college. Some left farms for sophisticated urban environments and were lost; others were the first in their families to go to colleges, and so on. The Ivy League is by definition snobbish to all outside its traditional insular orbit, whether white, black, brown, country folk, foreigners, etc. But by predicating such common discomfort on their own race and gender, Ms. Obama and Judge Sotomayor deprecate a universal human experience, and instead claim it as something unique to identity politics;

Once more we see the schizophrenia of affirmative action, diversity, and identify politics — the university is both obliged to select students on the basis, at least in part, of race, class, and gender, but then almost immediately faulted for a climate that, in the eye of the recipient, stigmatizes those to whom it gives unusual consideration (what is the answer? — no race/class/gender consideration at all?; constant race/class/gender consideration that begins at admission and continues through graduation?; damned if you do, damned if you don't?);

And the remedy for feeling separate at elite colleges is apparently to reemphasize separatism based on identification with the tribe (e.g., Justice Sotomayor's senior thesis, like that once written by Ms. Obama, is predicated on ethnic and racial grievance).

All this should disturb Democrats because it fuels a general and growing perception (cf. Sotomayor's white-male references, Eric Holder's "cowards" remark, the serial Obama apologies abroad, the confusion about America being an important Muslim nation, etc.) among the public that something very strange is going on — a sort of generic anger being expressed at the highest levels of government that seems fueled by long past resentments against a perceived establishment that at times apparently is to roughly characterized as white, or white male, or rich, or Christian, or something other than poor, of color, or of female?

One would have thought with the presidency, or nomination to the Supreme Court, or with the office of Attorney General, or First Lady, such hurt feelings and old grievances might wane; but instead the resentment seems to be ubiquious, and growing, and the lectures will be with us for the next four years in almost every imaginable circumstance. If the administration is not careful, millions of Americans are going to begin feeling that they are caricatured pretty much as those once were in rural Pennsylvania.

Four men were arrested in New York on Wednesday night after plotting to blow up two synagogues in the Bronx and shoot down military airplanes flying out of the New York Air National Guard base. The suspects were caught in a Federal Bureau of Investigation sting and were reportedly motivated by anger over the war in Afghanistan.

Last year, the four men began communicating with an FBI informant who sold them fake explosives and inactive missiles. They are being charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction in the US, and conspiracy to acquire and use antiaircraft missiles.

US officials say that although the attack was thwarted, it serves as a reminder that the possibility of another terror attack in the US is still very real, reports the Guardian. "While the bombs these terrorists attempted to plant tonight were – unbeknownst to them – fake, this latest attempt to attack our freedoms shows that the homeland security threats against New York City are sadly all too real," said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Many are drawing parallels between this recent attempt and several individuals' plans to attack Fort Dix in 2007. CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports that, as in the 2007 attempt, "the suspects had serious intent, strong grievances against the United States and a desire to be jihadists."

The group's leader, James Cromitie, claims that his parents live in Afghanistan and told the FBI informant that he was angry about the US military killing Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan, reports the Times of London.

He said that if he died a martyr, he would go to paradise and that he was interested in doing "something to America". In July last year, he told the informant that he wanted to join Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based group designated by Washington as a terrorist organisation, to "do jihad", according to the statement.

The Telegraph reports that Mr. Cromitie was probably motivated by deep-rooted anti-Semitism. In the official criminal complaint, the British paper reports that he used several profane words to describe his hatred of Jews

The group, which apparently showed sympathy toward Al Qaeda, said that the Sept. 11 attacks had already destroyed "the best target," the World Trade Center, so they decided to target the country's Jewish population. "They were filled with rage and wanted to take it out on what they considered the source of all problems in America – the Jews," one law-enforcement official told the New York Daily News.

Although the group had relatively advanced plans for their attacks, The New York Times City Room blog reports that they had little, if any, prior history with organized violence. Police describe the men as "petty criminals" who were working without any affiliation to larger terrorist organizations.

Mr. Cromitie, 53, had lived in Brooklyn and had a record of "as many as 27 arrests" for minor crimes "both upstate and in New York City," Mr. Kelly said. He, David Williams and Onta Williams are native-born United States citizens, while Mr. Payen is a native of Haiti. "We believe they knew each other from prison contacts, for the most part," Mr. Kelly said.

Mr. Cromitie was the oldest member of the group and its leader, while the others were "significantly younger," in their late 20s or early 30s, Mr. Kelly said.

The suspects apparently kept a low profile, not eliciting any suspicion from their neighbors, reports the New England Cable News Network. "Lives right over here with us. Regular dude," one of the suspects' neighbors told NECN.

NYC Asst. Principal with Swine Flu Very Sick! - 3 Schools CLOSED in NYC!

Maintenance workers scrubbed desks and door handles Friday in a flu swine outbreak that shut down three New York City public schools and left an assistant principal hospitalized in critical condition on a breathing tube.

Education Department spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said maintenance crews were thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting two middle schools and one elementary school in Queens where hundreds of students were sent home sick this week.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the school closures Thursday evening, saying four students and the assistant principal at the Susan B. Anthony middle school in Hollis have documented cases of swine flu.

The mayor said the assistant principal, Mitch Wiener, may have had pre-existing health problems — but on Friday, Wiener's son Adam said his father had only suffered previously from gout, which he said was unrelated to his current condition. He said his 55-year-old father is now suffering from kidney failure, dehydration and a lung infection.

"I don't know where people got that," Adam Wiener, 23, said Friday morning as he prepared to return to the hospital where the family was keeping vigil.

"The only pre-existing condition he has is gout, which is unrelated to complications he's experienced now."

Adam Wiener said his father had been sick since at least last weekend with flu-like symptoms "but we didn't think anything of it." Then early Wednesday, he said, the family called 911 after his father began "hallucinating and wasn't coherent."

Wiener's case marks the most severe illness in the city since the city's first known cases of swine flu appeared in late April. At least five schools in the city were closed then, but all have since reopened. Officials say the students who have fallen ill in this latest surge of illness appear to be experiencing mild symptoms, similar to routine flu.

Bloomberg said the three schools — with more than 4,000 students altogether — would be closed for at least a week because "there are an unusually high level of flulike illnesses at those schools."

"There are documented cases of H1N1 flu at one of them," the mayor said, using the formal name for swine flu.

New York City's first outbreak occurred when hundreds of teenagers at a Roman Catholic high school in Queens began falling ill following the return of several students from vacations in Mexico, where the outbreak began.

At first, the virus appeared to be moving at breakneck speed. An estimated 1,000 students, their relatives and staff at the St. Francis Preparatory School fell ill in a matter of days.

But the outbreak then seemed to subside. Additional sporadic cases continued to be diagnosed, but the symptoms were nearly all mild. The sick children recovered in short order and St. Francis reopened after being closed for a week.

The middle school with the confirmed cases is two miles from St. Francis.

People at the Susan B. Anthony school said students started going home sick on Tuesday and Wednesday, alarming parents.

"I'm worried," said Dino Dilchande, whose sixth-grade son goes to the school. "The city should have taken more precautions. We should have been notified earlier."

Administrators posted a sign on the door from the Health Department informing students and teachers that the school would be closed for a week. The school is in the Hollis section of Queens, a neighborhood known for producing several rappers including the group Run-DMC.

At the start of the flu outbreak in the United States, government health officials recommended that schools shut down for two weeks if there were students with swine flu. But when the virus turned out to be milder than initially feared, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention dropped that advice but urged parents to keep children with flu symptoms home for a week.

So far, the virus has not proved to be more infectious or deadly than the seasonal flu.

CDC officials said schools may decide to close if there is a cluster that's affecting attendance and staffing.

Adam Wiener said his father has been mostly unconscious because of sedation since Wednesday evening, breathing with the help of a ventilator.

One of Wiener's 18-year-old twin sons, Jordan, said his father had been awake briefly and asked him about his leg, which he had injured playing baseball.

"He's always about his kids first," Jordan Wiener said Friday. "He was asking me how I was feeling and how my season's going."

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi's Warren County has long been a multicultural hub with its Chinese-owned grocery stores, black funeral homes and restaurants that serve fried catfish and turnip greens to diverse crowds of diners.

Now U.S. Census Bureau data, released Thursday, show the home of Vicksburg is one of six counties in the U.S. that became "majority minority" between 2007 and 2008. They joined 303 of the nation's 3,142 counties that already had a minority of non-Hispanic whites.

The other newcomers last year were Orange County, Fla.; Edwards and Schleicher counties in Texas; Finney County, Kan.; and Stanislaus County, Calif.

The Census estimates that 50.4 percent of the people in Warren County are black, Hispanic, Asian or part of another racial minority. Non-Hispanic whites make up 49.6 percent of the county's population.

Lesley Silver, who is Jewish and grew up in Alabama, moved to Vicksburg as a young bride in 1964. She said the area's racial diversity appeals to her.

"I happen to love differences. So I feel the more ethnic groups here, the better the grocery stores we get," said Silver, whose business, The Attic Gallery, sells an eclectic mix of folk art in a building overlooking the Mississippi River.

Warren County's demographic change has been gradual, not dramatic. Census numbers showed that in 2000, 50.9 of the county's population was non-Hispanic white.

Two of the five county supervisor's districts already were majority black. The new Census numbers show 47.4 percent of the county's population is black, up from 46 percent in 2000.

James Price, superintendent of the Vicksburg Warren School District, said the 8,900-student district had 10 Hispanic students five years ago and 126 now. He said many of the children live in homes where parents speak little or no English.

Price said a few teachers in the district grew up speaking Spanish, and they've been helping their colleagues.

"We hired them to teach our elementary teachers 'survival Spanish,'" Price said Wednesday.

Gertrude Young, a real estate agent, said the Hispanic population in Warren County has increased the past several years because immigrants are working in construction and for a local mobile home manufacturing company.

Young said that when she served as a Vicksburg alderwoman from 1993-2005, she tried to get the police department to hire Spanish-speaking officers and interpreters to help ensure immigrants were treated fairly.

"We still do not have enough," said Young, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor this year.

Silver concedes she's not the type to simplify a statistician's job. She said she'll often skip over questions about her race or ethnicity on Census forms.

"I love layers," Silver said. "Just give me layers and differences, and I'm happy."

Meet Vince Shlomi. He's probably better known to you as the ShamWow Guy, the ubiquitous television pitchman who has been phenomenally successful peddling absorbent towels and food choppers. Shlomi, 44, was arrested last month on a felony battery charge following a violent confrontation with a prostitute in his South Beach hotel room.

In last month's violent confrontation between the ShamWow Guy and a South Beach prostitute, there is no doubt which combatant took the worst of the battle. As seen in the below mug shot and the profile here, Sasha Harris, 26, was left with a pair of black eyes and other injuries after tangling with Vince Shlomi, 44, in a room at the swanky Setai hotel. As TSG previously reported, Shlomi told cops that he met Harris in a Miami Beach nightclub and later paid her about $1000 for "straight sex." But when the TV pitchman tried to kiss Harris, she allegedly bit his tongue and would not let go. Shlomi told cops that he punched Harris several times until she released his bleeding tongue. Shlomi and Harris were both treated at the Mount Sinai Medical Center before being booked for felony aggravated battery (hence the matching hospital smocks). Prosecutors this month declined to pursue formal charges against either brawler.

According to an arrest affidavit, Shlomi met Sasha Harris, 26, at a Miami Beach nightclub on February 7 and subsequently retired with her to his $750 room at the lavish Setai hotel. Shlomi told cops he paid Harris about $1000 in cash after she "propositioned him for straight sex." Shlomi said that when he kissed Harris, she suddenly "bit his tongue and would not let go." Shlomi then punched Harris several times until she released his tongue. The affidavit, a copy of which you'll find here, notes that during the 4 AM fight Harris sustained facial fractures and lacerations all over her face (she is pictured here in mug shots snapped following busts in 2008 and 2005).

After freeing his tongue, a bleeding Shlomi ran to the Setai lobby, where security summoned cops. Harris refused to cooperate with officers, who recovered $930 from her purse. "Both parties had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from their persons," police reported. In a brief telephone interview, Harris declined to answer TSG questions about her run-in with Shlomi, though she did say she is considering a lawsuit against the pitchman.

Asked if she worked as a hooker, Harris declined comment. As seen in the below mug shot, Shlomi was also injured during the fracas and, court records show, was treated at Mount Sinai Medical Center. While Shlomi and Harris were both arrested for felony aggravated battery, prosecutors this month declined to file formal charges against the combatants. Police records list Shlomi's occupation as "Marketing," but make no mention of his affiliation with the ShamWow or the Slap Chop, both of which sell for $19.95 (plus shipping and handling).

Police Flier Called 'Racist' by Mexican Masses in Escondido, California (Gang Members Outnumber Police Officers 6-1)

Some residents and city officials say a flier sent by the city's police officers' union crosses the line, peddling fear and deepening racial wounds in an effort to win a labor battle.

About 17,000 Escondido residents have received a full-color, four-page flier in the mail with five heavily tattooed gang members on the cover.

Above and below them it says: “On the streets, gang members now outnumber Escondido police officers by almost 6 to 1. . . . Why isn't the City Council putting your safety first?”

Inside, the flier says violent crime and theft are “sharply on the rise” and cites the number of gang members, gang associates, sex offenders and parolees in the city. It says that the base pay of the city's 158 police officers is the second lowest in the county, and that officers are leaving.

The flier asks residents to attend tomorrow's council meeting to “tell your council members and city manager exactly how you feel about their putting your community at risk.”

The meeting is a council hearing to break an impasse in labor negotiations between the union and the city related to a growing budget deficit. The city wants the union to agree to benefit cuts, all of which the union rejects.

One problem critics have with the flier is that the gang members on the cover are not from Escondido. The same picture appears on various Web sites, one of which describes them as Los Angeles gang members from El Salvador.

It was purchased by the union's public relations firm, said Mike Guerrero, the union's president. “We didn't use local gang members for a reason – I do not want to embolden local gang members,” Guerrero said.

Councilwoman Olga Diaz took offense at the flier.

“The appearance they left is that they are willing to scare residents so they will side on behalf of the police for the money,” she said. “ . . . They have intertwined the issue of race into a discussion that should only have included money.”

The statistics in the flier also were questioned.

“The crime statistics are inaccurate. Some of the comparisons with salaries are not accurate,” City Manager Clay Phillips said.

Guerrero defended the statistics, saying they were collected from various sources.

But some are contradicted. The FBI's annual crime report released in January, for example, said violent crime in Escondido dropped 24.5 percent in the first six months of 2008 and and property crime decreased 4 percent.

“It's fear-mongering,” Councilman Dick Daniels said of the flier. “This city continues to be safely policed.”

Speaking at a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in Madrid, Medvedev welcomed the 'positive signals' coming from the Obama administration with which he hoped to reach 'agreements.'

'Haggling,' however, was not 'productive,' Medvedev said.

Israeli girl 'youngest divorcee'

A 14-year-old Israeli girl has got a divorce from her 17-year-old husband, making her what media are describing as the country's youngest divorcee.

The divorce came after a rabbinical court ruled that their wedding met the major requirements of Jewish law.

The two sweethearts had exchanged vows in front of friends, exchanged a ring, and the union had been consummated.

When her parents found out what had occurred, they insisted on a religious divorce, which she initially refused.

Both partners come from traditionally religious Jewish families.

Legal consequence

The young couple are said to have recited their marriage vows in front of a group of friends and the husband gave his wife a ring.

The girl is said to have initially refused her parents' demand for the divorce, saying she wanted to live with the boy.

She said she wanted to marry him officially when she was old enough.

The Israeli press says she only changed her mind when the boy's parents offered her money.

The religious court in Jerusalem then held the divorce proceeding.

The divorce will go on the girl's legal file, meaning that when she is 16, her identity card will say she is divorced.

One consequence of this is that - if she follows Jewish religious law - she will not be able to marry anyone from the traditional Jewish priestly caste.

WHITES ONLY: Niagra Falls police say woman put up 'Racist' sign ("I can do what I want. I live in America")

NIAGARA FALLS—Two days after a man was sentenced to probation and community service for putting up a sign as a “joke” in a public works garage that said “whites only” on a drinking fountain, city police were called to a home in the 600 block of 25th Street on Sunday to investigate another racially charged sign.

This one was clearly no joke.

No charges were filed Sunday, but police told the woman she must take down the handwritten sign on a fence on her property saying, “I rent three bedrooms [at her address to] white people Niagara Falls.”

The 53-year-old woman told police she put up the sign after someone tried to break into her house and added, “I can do what I want. I live in America,” according to a police report.

Police said they received complaints and she must take the sign down. An officer at the scene said the woman agreed to take down the sign under protest. The officer said the woman already had seven more signs she was planning to hang up.

Stimulus Pork: Pelosi Earmarks $30 Million for Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse

Talk about a pet project. A tiny mouse with the longtime backing of a political giant may soon reap the benefits of the economic-stimulus package.

Lawmakers and administration officials divulged Wednesday that the $789 billion economic stimulus bill being finalized behind closed doors in Congress includes $30 million for wetlands restoration that the Obama administration intends to spend in the San Francisco Bay Area to protect, among other things, the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi represents the city of San Francisco and has previously championed preserving the mouse's habitat in the Bay Area.

The revelation immediately became a political football, as Republicans accused Democrats of reneging on a promise to keep so-called earmarks that fund lawmakers' favorite projects out of the legislation. Democrats, including Mrs. Pelosi, countered that the accusations were fabricated.

Politics aside, the episode demonstrates that no matter how hard lawmakers argue that they technically lived up to their pledge to keep specific projects from being listed in the bill, there is little stopping the federal money from going to those projects after the legislation passes and federal and state agencies begin deciding where to spend their newfound dollars.

Programs for sexually transmitted diseases, smoking prevention, a clean-burning power plant and a computer center also appear ready to get infusions of money once the bill becomes law, congressional offices told The Washington Times.

"One of the proudest boasts of Democrats supporting their trillion-dollar spending plan is that it doesn't contain earmarks. But it seems like powerful Democrats will still find a way to bring home the bacon," said a frustrated Michael Steel, spokesman for House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, who took direct aim at the mouse.

"This certainly doesn't sound like it will create or save American jobs," Mr. Steel said. "So can Speaker Pelosi explain exactly how we will improve the American economy by helping the adorable little" critter?

A spokesman for Mrs. Pelosi said Republicans "fabricated" the claim.

"The speaker nor her staff have had any involvement in this initiative. This is yet another contrived partisan attack," Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said. "Restoration is key to economic activity, including farming, fisheries, recreation and clean water."

Republican lawmakers said they learned of the marsh money when asking about how various agencies plan to spend stimulus money. The vitality of the mouse has been an issue for Mrs. Pelosi and other California Democrats since the early 1990s.

President Obama boasts that the stimulus plan contains no earmarks because Congress technically did not use the earmark process for lawmakers to request and drop in specific spending items. Congressional leaders were putting the finishing touches on a $789 billion final version of the bill Wednesday night. It was not clear how many of the programs criticized by Republicans remained in the package.

Some of those items that Republicans are calling earmarks include $200 million for a clean-burning power plant in Mattoon, Ill., and $750 million for the National Computer Center and $500 million for the National Institutes of Health offices, both located in Maryland.

Other spending questioned by Republicans -- but not considered on the chopping block -- are $275 million for flood prevention, $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges and libraries, and $650 million for the digital TV converter-box coupons.

The list goes on: $1 billion for administrative costs and construction of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration office buildings, $100 million for constructing U.S. Marshals office buildings, and $1.3 billion for NASA, including $450 million tagged for science.

Then there is the $300 million for hybrid and electric cars for the federal government. The funding includes golf carts for federal workers.

An Arizona man who has waged a 10-year campaign to stop a flood of illegal immigrants from crossing his property is being sued by 16 Mexican nationals who accuse him of conspiring to violate their civil rights when he stopped them at gunpoint on his ranch on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Roger Barnett, 64, began rounding up illegal immigrants in 1998 and turning them over to the U.S. Border Patrol, he said, after they destroyed his property, killed his calves and broke into his home.

His Cross Rail Ranch near Douglas, Ariz., is known by federal and county law enforcement authorities as "the avenue of choice" for immigrants seeking to enter the United States illegally.

Trial continues Monday in the federal lawsuit, which seeks $32 million in actual and punitive damages for civil rights violations, the infliction of emotional distress and other crimes. Also named are Mr. Barnett's wife, Barbara, his brother, Donald, and Larry Dever, sheriff in Cochise County, Ariz., where the Barnetts live. The civil trial is expected to continue until Friday.

The lawsuit is based on a March 7, 2004, incident in a dry wash on the 22,000-acre ranch, when he approached a group of illegal immigrants while carrying a gun and accompanied by a large dog.

Attorneys for the immigrants - five women and 11 men who were trying to cross illegally into the United States - have accused Mr. Barnett of holding the group captive at gunpoint, threatening to turn his dog loose on them and saying he would shoot anyone who tried to escape.

The immigrants are represented at trial by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), which also charged that Sheriff Dever did nothing to prevent Mr. Barnett from holding their clients at "gunpoint, yelling obscenities at them and kicking one of the women."

In the lawsuit, MALDEF said Mr. Barnett approached the group as the immigrants moved through his property, and that he was carrying a pistol and threatening them in English and Spanish. At one point, it said, Mr. Barnett's dog barked at several of the women and he yelled at them in Spanish, "My dog is hungry and he's hungry for buttocks."

The lawsuit said he then called his wife and two Border Patrol agents arrived at the site. It also said Mr. Barnett acknowledged that he had turned over 12,000 illegal immigrants to the Border Patrol since 1998.

In March, U.S. District Judge John Roll rejected a motion by Mr. Barnett to have the charges dropped, ruling there was sufficient evidence to allow the matter to be presented to a jury. Mr. Barnett's attorney, David Hardy, had argued that illegal immigrants did not have the same rights as U.S. citizens.

Mr. Barnett told The Washington Times in a 2002 interview that he began rounding up illegal immigrants after they started to vandalize his property, northeast of Douglas along Arizona Highway 80. He said the immigrants tore up water pumps, killed calves, destroyed fences and gates, stole trucks and broke into his home.

Some of his cattle died from ingesting the plastic bottles left behind by the immigrants, he said, adding that he installed a faucet on an 8,000-gallon water tank so the immigrants would stop damaging the tank to get water.

Mr. Barnett said some of the ranch´s established immigrant trails were littered with trash 10 inches deep, including human waste, used toilet paper, soiled diapers, cigarette packs, clothes, backpacks, empty 1-gallon water bottles, chewing-gum wrappers and aluminum foil - which supposedly is used to pack the drugs the immigrant smugglers give their "clients" to keep them running.

He said he carried a pistol during his searches for the immigrants and had a rifle in his truck "for protection" against immigrant and drug smugglers, who often are armed.

ASSOCIATED PRESS DEFENDANT: Roger Barnett said he had turned over 12,000 illegal immigrants to the Border Patrol since 1998.

A former Cochise County sheriff´s deputy who later was successful in the towing and propane business, Mr. Barnett spent $30,000 on electronic sensors, which he has hidden along established trails on his ranch. He searches the ranch for illegal immigrants in a pickup truck, dressed in a green shirt and camouflage hat, with his handgun and rifle, high-powered binoculars and a walkie-talkie.

His sprawling ranch became an illegal-immigration highway when the Border Patrol diverted its attention to several border towns in an effort to take control of the established ports of entry. President Bush Commutes Compean and Ramos Sentences

In his final acts of clemency, President George W. Bush on Monday commuted the prison sentences of two former U.S. Border Patrol agents whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer ignited fierce debate about illegal immigration.

Bush's decision to commute the sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who tried to cover up the shooting, was welcomed by both Republican and Democratic members of Congress. They had long argued that the agents were merely doing their jobs, defending the American border against criminals. They also maintained that the more than 10-year prison sentences the pair was given were too harsh.

Rancor over their convictions, sentencing and firings has simmered ever since the shooting occurred in 2005.

Ramos and Compean became a rallying point among conservatives and on talk shows where their supporters called them heroes. Nearly the entire bipartisan congressional delegation from Texas and other lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle pleaded with Bush to grant them clemency.

Bush didn't pardon the men for their crimes, but decided instead to commute their prison sentences because he believed they were excessive and that they had already suffered the loss of their jobs, freedom and reputations, a senior administration official said.

The action by the president, who believes the border agents received fair trials and that the verdicts were just, does not diminish the seriousness of their crimes, the official said.

Compean and Ramos, who have served about two years of their sentences, are expected to be released from prison within the next two months.

They were convicted of shooting admitted drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete Davila in the buttocks as he fled across the Rio Grande, away from an abandoned van load of marijuana. The border agents argued during their trials that they believed the smuggler was armed and that they shot him in self defense. The prosecutor in the case said there was no evidence linking the smuggler to the van of marijuana. The prosecutor also said the border agents didn't report the shooting and tampered with evidence by picking up several spent shell casings.

The agents were fired after their convictions on several charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon and with serious bodily injury, violation of civil rights and obstruction of justice. All their convictions, except obstruction of justice, were upheld on appeal.
With the new acts of clemency, Bush has granted a total of 189 pardons and 11 commutations.

That's fewer than half as many as Presidents Bill Clinton or Ronald Reagan issued during their two-term tenures. Bush technically has until noon on Tuesday when President-elect Barack Obama is sworn into office to exercise his executive pardon authority, but presidential advisers said no more were forthcoming.

The president had made most of his pardon decisions on low-profile cases, but his batch in December created controversy.

Isaac Robert Toussie of Brooklyn, N.Y, convicted of making false statements to the Department of Housing and Urban Development and of mail fraud, was among 19 people Bush pardoned just before Christmas. But after learning in news reports that Toussie's father had donated tens of thousands of dollars to the Republican Party a few months ago, as well as other information, the president reversed his decision on Toussie's case.

The White House said the decision to revoke the pardon — a step unheard of in recent memory — was based on information about the extent and nature of Toussie's prior criminal offenses, and that neither the White House counsel's office nor the president had been aware of a political contribution by Toussie's father and wanted to avoid creating an appearance of impropriety.

In an earlier high-profile official act of forgiveness, Bush saved Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, from serving prison time in the case of the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity. Libby was convicted of perjury and obstructing justice. Bush could still grant him a full pardon, although Libby has not applied for one.

Bush's batches of pardons, however, have never included any well-known convicts like junk bond dealer Michael Milken, who sought a pardon on securities fraud charges, or two politicians convicted of public corruption — former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., and four-term Democratic Louisiana Gov. Edwin W. Edwards — who wanted Bush to shorten their prison terms.

Clinton issued a total of 457 in eight years in office. Bush's father, George H. W. Bush, issued 77 in four years. Reagan issued 406 in eight years, and President Carter issued 563 in four years. Since World War II, the largest number of pardons and commutations — 2,031 — came from President Truman, who served 82 days short of eight years.

Discrimination Against White Males Encouraged in Australia

DISCRIMINATION against dominant white males will soon be encouraged in a bid to boost the status of women, the disabled and cultural and religious minorities in Australia.

Such positive discrimination -- treating people differently in order to obtain equality for marginalised groups - is set to be legalised under planned changes to the Equal Opportunity Act foreshadowed last week by state Attorney-General Rob Hulls.

The laws are also expected to protect the rights of people with criminal records to get a job, as long as their past misdeeds are irrelevant to work being sought.

Equal Opportunity Commission CEO Dr Helen Szoke said males had "been the big success story in business and goods and services".

"Clearly, they will have their position changed because they will be competing in a different way with these people who have been traditionally marginalised," she said.

"Let's open it up so everyone can have a fair go."

Victoria's peak business body expressed concern yesterday about the need for the proposed laws, and questioned if they would undermine the right of companies to make legitimate business decisions.

At present, individuals or bodies wanting to single out any race or gender for special treatment must gain an exemption from VCAT.

Companies and public bodies accused of discrimination can only be held to account after a complaint has been made.

But the proposed changes go much further, allowing the commission to inquire into discrimination, seize documents and search and enter premises after attempts to bring about change have failed.

Businesses and individuals would be required to change their ways even if a complaint had not been received.

Action could be taken where an unlawful act was "likely to occur", not just in cases where discrimination has taken place.

The commission would also have real teeth to enforce its rulings via VCAT and, as a last resort, in the courts.

The changes, shown in a Department of Justice report by former public advocate Julian Gardner, would also:

EDUCATE people so they know their rights.

GIVE more protection to people with disabilities, requiring companies and public entities to reasonably accommodate their needs.

GRANT the homeless and people who act as volunteers better protection from discrimination.
Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry workplace general manager David Gregory said business supported the objectives of equal opportunity legislation.

"But I am concerned and curious about whether these changes mean the commission can second-guess the legitimate business decisions of individual businesses," he said.

The first raft of changes to the Equal Opportunity Act were introduced into Parliament last week.

It includes names, addresses, telephone numbers and jobs of 12,000 people.

It has been removed from the blog it was published on after protests by BNP leaders but members say they are still receiving threatening messages.

One woman, who did not want to be named, told BBC Radio 5 Live she had received a late-night phone saying she should be "very careful" as someone could come to her house.

The BNP's regional organiser in Northern Ireland has advised members to increase their personal security because of the risk of attack from dissident Republicans.

John, from Redcar, told BBC Radio 5 Live he had been inundated with abusive and threatening e-mails since the list was published.

They have said they will put them [his details] on as many sites as they can and they won't leave us alone," he said.

But Richard, a Blackpool hotelier, said: "We did have some strange phone calls last night but if you are a member of any party you should not be ashamed of it."

BNP spokesman Simon Darby said it had contacted a company involved with the blog to warn of the consequences if it was not taken down.

Party leader Nick Griffin called the leak "a disgraceful act of treachery" by former members.

He claimed the threatening calls were part of an "established dirty tricks campaign" from the Labour Party.

Mr Griffin said he had lodged a complaint with Dyfed-Powys Police on the grounds that the publication breached human rights and data protection laws.

He told the BBC the party would use Human Rights Act to try to protect the identities of its members.

He said he had "no problem at all" about the professions of members being in the public domain, as "a matter of public interest", but called publishing people's names and addresses a "nasty piece of intimidation".

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said everyone had the "right to protection under data protection laws" but it was up to Dyfed-Powys Police whether to take the matter further.

Occupations ascribed to the names on the list include teachers, a doctor, nurse and members of the armed forces.

While there is no ban on many of those professions joining the BNP, its anti-immigration policies are seen by some organisations as incompatible with frontline public service.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman confirmed that Paul Murray, a member of the Royal staff, was on the list.

She said the 41-year-old storeman, and his wife Jennifer, 44, both denied being BNP members.

Mr Murray, who works at Windsor Castle, believes their names may have appeared on the list because they were once invited to a BNP social event which they did not attend.

The denial was accepted and no further action is to be taken.

The membership list, from 2007, also includes the name of one man alleged to be a vicar and another said to be a prison officer.

A Prison Service spokesman said membership of the BNP was "entirely incompatible with working in the Prison Service and, if it is confirmed that a member of staff belongs to one of them, they will be subject to our disciplinary procedures".

Police officers are also banned from joining, a policy which is recognised in the list.

Alongside the name of a serving officer, the document states that there is "Discretion required re. employment concerns".

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said it was content for Merseyside Police to handle a complaint about one of its officers allegedly being a BNP member.

The party said the publication could lead to identity theft and endanger children named in the list.

Some as young as 14 are included where their families have party memberships.

Earlier this year, the BNP obtained an injunction at the High Court in Manchester banning any publication of the list.

Mr Griffin said the list was "essentially genuine", but a number of names of people who were not or are not party members had been added.

North Wales Police said they would tackle any reports of an information breach "in the usual robust manner".

The Information Commission will contact the BNP for the full facts of the case before deciding whether any action will be taken, a spokesman said.

It seems that the final days of the presidential campaign have made Erica Jong and her friends more than a little anxious.

A few days ago, Jong, the author and self-described feminist, gave an interview to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the choicest bits of which were brought to my attention by the reliably sharp-eyed Christian Rocca, the U.S. correspondent of Il Foglio, who published excerpts on his Camillo blog. Basically, Jong says her fear that Obama might lose the election has developed into an "obsession. A paralyzing terror. An anxious fever that keeps you awake at night." She also says that her friends Jane Fonda and Naomi Wolf are extremely worried that Obama will be sabotaged by Republican dirty tricks, and that if an Obama loss indeed comes to pass, the result will be a second American Civil War.

Barack Obama has lived one version of the American dream that has taken him to the steps of the White House. But a few miles from where the Democratic presidential candidate studied at Harvard, his Kenyan aunt and uncle, immigrants living in modest circumstances in Boston, have a contrasting American story.

Zeituni Onyango, the aunt so affectionately described in Obama's best-selling memoir "Dreams fFrom My Father," lives in a disabled-access flat on a rundown public housing estate in South Boston.

A second relative believed to be the long-lost "Uncle Omar" described in the book was beaten by armed robbers with a "sawed-off rifle" while working in a corner shop in the Dorchester area of the city. He was later evicted from his one-bedroom apartment for failing to pay $2,324.20 in bills, according to the Boston Housing Court.

The press has repeatedly rehearsed Obama's extraordinary odyssey, but the other side of the family's American experience has only been revealed in parts. Just across town from where Obama made history as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, some of his closest blood relatives have confronted the harshness of immigrant life in America.

In his book Obama writes that "Uncle Omar" had gone missing after moving to Boston in the 1960s a quarter-century before Obama first visited his family in Kenya. Aunt Zeituni is now also living in Boston, and recently made a $260 campaign contribution to her nephew's presidential bid from a work address in the city.

Speaking outside her home in Flaherty Way, South Boston, on Tuesday, Onyango, 56, confirmed she was the "Auntie Zeituni" in Obama's memoir. She declined to answer most other questions about her relationship with the presidential contender until after the November 4 election.

"I can't talk about it, I just pray for him, that's all," she said, adding: "After the 4th, I can talk to anyone."

South Boston has had a lot of famous political names over the years: John Joseph Moakley, William M. Bulger, Louise Day Hicks.

Now, Americans can add another one to the neighborhood roster: Zeituni Onyango.

Barack Obama's campaign confirmed yesterday that Onyango, who lives in a brick public housing complex on a side street not far from the headquarters of the Iron Workers, Local 7, is the senator's aunt.

Ben LaBolt, a campaign spokesman, declined to comment further on the Democratic presidential nominee's relationship with Onyango, who has lived in the complex for five years.

In a neighborhood known for producing generations of legendary Irish-American politicians, news that the town is home to the Kenyan relative of a presidential candidate was a shock.

State Representative Brian P. Wallace, a Democrat who lives a few blocks from Onyango, said he had heard rumors over the summer that Obama had an aunt living in the neighborhood.

"Obama's aunt living in Southie?" he said. "I thought somebody was putting me on."

Yesterday, as word spread that Onyango was Obama's aunt, Wallace was bursting with pride.

"I think it's great to have her," he said. "Maybe her nephew will visit."

Onyango is Obama's paternal aunt, one of several children of the senator's grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama. In his memoir, "Dreams From My Father," Obama refers to Onyango affectionately as Aunt Zeituni and recalls that she was the first person to greet him when he stepped off a plane for the first time in Kenya.

" 'Welcome home,' Zeituni said, kissing me on both cheeks," Obama wrote.

Onyango, who is paid a small stipend for working as a health advocate in her housing complex, has shunned attention. Yesterday morning, she ignored a television camera, saying nothing to several reporters as she walked out of her first-floor apartment, handed a duffle bag to the driver of a taxicab, and was driven off.

For three years, she was a volunteer with Experience Corps, a nonprofit that trains adults over 55 to work with children in public schools, said Mary Gunn, the group's executive director.

In a profile on the Experience Corps website, Onyango is described as a "former computer systems coordinator" who says she wanted to volunteer in the schools because "I felt that I should help the children in my community."

"I love people and enjoy interacting with them," Onyango said. "Also, I was idle, and this was a chance to get involved."

Gunn said Onyango is a wonderful person, but said, "Zeituni wishes for me not to comment, and I want to honor her wish."

During visits to her building Wednesday morning and afternoon, and in a phone conversation Wednesday night, Onyango made clear her desire to stay out of the way of her nephew's campaign. "We'll talk after the election," she said. "Come talk to me after the fifth."

A city housing official who visited Onyango this week found the walls of her apartment adorned with photographs of Obama, including some that appeared to be more than two decades old.

"She's been a model resident," said William McGonagle, deputy director of the Boston Housing Authority. "She did a remarkable job as a resident health advocate."

Federal Election Commission records show that Onyango donated at least five times to her nephew's campaign in July and September. Three of the donations were for $5 each, and two of the donations were for $25. Records compiled by The Huffington Post show she gave a total of $260 to the campaign.

Okay, first off I am a very honest undecided voter. I have not been convinced by either Obama or McCain. I have been working 24 hours a day of sleepless nights just trying to get my business off the ground. I love this country and just want whats best for my country and I. Now while neither has sold me, I just read an article that worried me. I heard Barack Obama telling the nation on the television spots he bought that He felt the pain of the middle class, single mothers, and small business owners and how he was dedicated to them. It seemed sincere. Now I read an article a while ago and even did a video about his homeless brother in Kenya. At first it annoyed me, but I shrugged it off for the facts. He lives in Kenya and he has only met him twice. I was leaning towards an Obama vote until I read this.

His aunt and uncle, who he wrote about in one of his books lives in Boston. They were recently evicted for a little over 2,000 dollars in bills and are now living in a south boston project. Obama is not rich, he is wealthy. If he preaches spreading the wealth, why in the world cant he help his disabled uncle in Boston who he loves. It seems a little redundant but who really is the reel Barack Obama, I want to know before I vote.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was less than upfront in his half-hour commercial Wednesday night about the costs of his programs and the crushing budget pressures he would face in office.

Obama's assertion that "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond" the expense of his promises is accepted only by his partisans. His vow to save money by "eliminating programs that don't work" masks his failure throughout the campaign to specify what those programs are—beyond the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

A sampling of what voters heard in the ad, and what he didn't tell them:

THE SPIN: "That's why my health care plan includes improving information technology, requires coverage for preventive care and pre-existing conditions and lowers health care costs for the typical family by $2,500 a year."

THE FACTS: His plan does not lower premiums by $2,500, or any set amount. Obama hopes that by spending $50 billion over five years on electronic medical records and by improving access to proven disease management programs, among other steps, consumers will end up saving money. He uses an optimistic analysis to suggest cost reductions in national health care spending could amount to the equivalent of $2,500 for a family of four. Many economists are skeptical those savings can be achieved, but even if they are, it's not a certainty that every dollar would be passed on to consumers in the form of lower premiums.

THE FACTS: That belief should not be confused with a guarantee of health coverage for all. He makes no such promise. Obama hinted as much in the ad when he said about the problem of the uninsured: "I want to start doing something about it." He would mandate coverage for children but not adults. His program is aimed at making insurance more affordable by offering the choice of government-subsidized coverage similar to that in a plan for federal employees and other steps, including requiring larger employers to share costs of insuring workers.

THE SPIN: "We are currently spending $10 billion a month in Iraq, when they have a $79 billion surplus. It seems to me that if we're going to be strong at home as well as strong abroad that we've got to look at bringing that war to a close." These lines in the ad were taken from a debate with McCain.

THE FACTS: Obama was once and very often definitive about getting combat troops out in 16 months (At times during the primaries, he promised to do so within a year). More recently, without backing away explicitly from the 16-month withdrawal pledge, he has talked of the need for flexibility. In the primaries, it would have been a jarring departure for him to have said merely that "we've got to look at" ending the war. As for Iraq's surplus, it's true that Iraq could end up with a surplus that large, but that hasn't happened yet.

Sen. Dianne Wilkerson, who cuts a glittering, energetic figure around the Massachusetts Statehouse, stood alone and soberly attired in federal court Tuesday after being charged with accepting $23,500 in bribes — including $10,000 to fund her write-in campaign next week.

The Democrat was freed on a $50,000 unsecured bond. FBI agents arrested her at her Boston home earlier in the day on charges of attempted extortion as a public official and theft of honest services as a state senator.

An FBI affidavit includes a series of still photographs from video recordings allegedly showing Wilkerson accepting money from undercover agents, in one case stuffing cash under her sweater and inside her bra.

Some meetings to discuss her assistance in obtaining a liquor license and pushing legislation on behalf of a developer took place in the Statehouse, according to the complaint. Wilkerson also allegedly took the write-in payment earlier this month outside her district office in Roxbury.

"Public service is a privilege, and voters and taxpayers expect that elected officials will do what's right for their constituents, not what is financially best for themselves," U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan said. "The citizens of the commonwealth deserve honest and faithful services from elected officials, uncompromised by secret payments of cash."

While the complaint detailed political horse-trading, Sullivan said he did not believe any other public official took a bribe.

Wilkerson did not enter a plea. She has a pre-trial hearing in Worcester on Nov. 17. She faces up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines on each count.

Wilkerson's attorney, Max Stern, declined a request for comment, but supporters suggested the senator, who has a long history of campaign finance violations and personal legal problems, was being targeted by law enforcement officials.

Asked about those concerns, one of Wilkerson's two sons who attended the hearing, Cornell Mills, said afterward, "What can you say? We'll just have to wait and see how it works out."

Wilkerson, 53, has held her Senate seat since 1993 but she lost a close Democratic primary in September to former teacher Sonia Chang-Diaz. She has been running a sticker campaign for the Nov. 4 general election, urging her supporters to either write her name on the ballot or affix a sticker bearing her name.

Among the allegations, she is accused of urging an undercover agent to help her raise $10,000 of the up to $70,000 needed for a primary recount. Sullivan said it was "coincidental" the complaint was filed a week before the election.

Despite her problems, Wilkerson remained popular in her district and was supported in her primary bid by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick. Wilkerson, the first and only black woman to serve in the Legislature's upper chamber, was cited as an advocate for the minority community, especially for access to public health care.

Senate President Therese Murray, who had endorsed Wilkerson and campaigned with her, said she was seeking an investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee and would remove the senator from her post as chairwoman of the Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight.

The governor said the allegations were "troubling and sad."

"These are very serious charges and I will trust the judicial process to take them seriously," he said.

Senate Republican Leader Richard Tisei called on her to resign.

Sullivan said Wilkerson accepted eight payments, ranging in amounts from $500 to $10,000, during the 17-month investigation. Wilkerson was carrying $6,000 in cash when arrested, although her lawyer said it was for personal bills.

In one part of the criminal complaint, an undercover agent asks Wilkerson if a second agent has been "taking care" of her.

"Sure has," Wilkerson is quoted as saying. "And believe me, they're very, very, very much appreciated."

According to the complaint, between June 2007 and March 2008, Wilkerson allegedly took $8,500 in cash payments from an undercover agent and a cooperating witness to help a proposed nightclub in her district, named Dejavu, get a liquor license.

She allegedly pressured the Boston License Board, Menino and the City Council on behalf of the nightclub, and delayed legislation that would have increased the salaries of members of the Licensing Board.

"I pushed the envelope farther than it's ever been pushed before," Wilkerson allegedly told the agent.

She also said "I've been beating people up" for action, and spoke of "people who's knees I had to crack," according to the complaint.

Between June and October, she also allegedly accepted $15,000 in payments in exchange for helping an undercover officer posing as a businessman avoid the bidding process to develop state property in Roxbury.

During one transaction caught on videotape on June 18, 2007, Wilkerson allegedly took a payment and stuffed it inside her sweater at the bar at No. 9 Park restaurant on Beacon Hill. The money was handed to Wilkerson by a cooperating witness who the senator allegedly promised to help obtain the liquor license.

During another transaction at the Fill-A-Buster restaurant on Beacon Hill, a cooperating witness handed Wilkerson $1,000 in cash, telling her she had earned the money and should "knock yourself out." The handoff was made while Wilkerson's granddaughter, who had accompanied her to the lunch, was away from the table, according to the complaint.

Wilkerson told the witness she planned to go to the spa at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut that weekend, the complaint said.

The new charges are the latest in a string of troubles to plague the lawmaker.

On Friday, the state Bar Counsel filed a complaint against Wilkerson accusing her of lying under oath in an effort to overturn her nephew's voluntary manslaughter conviction. The penalty could include disbarment. She has denied those allegations.

She was sentenced to house arrest in December 1997 after pleading guilty to failing to pay $51,000 in federal income taxes in the early 1990s.

Over the years, she also has paid thousands in fines to settle allegations of failing to account for donations and personal reimbursements for her campaign and political action committee and for failing to properly report that a bank she lobbied for as senator was paying her more than $20,000 a year as a consultant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John McNeil, who is prosecuting the case, asked that Wilkerson not only be banned from talking to potential witnesses, but also destroying any documents related to the case or her personal finances. He said federal agents may review her bills to determine if there were tax violations.

Stern said Wilkerson would obey the judge but the requested conditions were not necessary.

He accused McNeil of using the hearing as "an occasion to engage in something of a character assassination of Sen. Wilkerson."

A rumor that Democratic candidate for President Barack Obama may have had an affair with a staffer during his run for the United States Senate in 2004, is gaining some traction . October is traditionally the month in which controversial stories, that break (seldom make), candidates are published. These stories even have a name: ‘October Surprise.’ Historically, this was the month of the year in which some dirt about a specific candidate surfaced and destroyed his career.

Several rumors about Obama that could evolve into such an October Surprise were covered at a variety of websites in recent days. Thus far, however, they are not more than just that, rumors, leading many to the conclusion that Obama’s opponents are throwing dirt at the wall, hoping something will stick.

Interesting about the Baker rumor is that it did not originate from Republicans, but from Democrats. Several individuals who call themselves partisan Democrats have raised the issue, and have talked about it with journalists for the Daily Mail but also, according to the daily, to journalists working for the Los Angeles Times. The story is now also pushed by partisan Republicans who hope that it may cause Obama’s poll numbers to fall, and McCain to rise.

Critics would say that most of these rumors are a symptom of John McCain’s low standing in the polls. Although that may be true to one degree or another, it should be kept in mind that many ‘October Surprises’ were successful in destroying a candidate’s campaign in the past precisely because they were true. Imaginary stories gain less traction and have historically been less effective. Also, many of the bloggers pushing the Vera Baker rumor were also those who accused Democratic former Senator and candidate for President John Edwards of cheating on his wife. The mainstream media did not want to touch the story; the rumor was proven true. Edwards did indeed have an affair, he may even have made his girlfriend pregnant. If he would have been the Democratic Party’s nominee, he would have almost certainly have lost.

However, as is usual in American politics, a lot of dirt is slung around, most of it either entirely false or spun to hurt a candidate, in this case Obama. Whether the rumor about Baker will prove true or not remains to be seen. In the meantime, it would be wise for observers and voters to consider this one of many rumors, nothing more, nothing less.
