ABSTRACT

A 6 MW peak, 24 kW average power S-band Klystron is under development at CEERI, Pilani under an MoU between BARC and CEERI. The design of the klystron has been completed. The electron gun has been designed using TRAK and MAGIC codes. RF cavities have been designed using HFSS and CST Microwave Studio while the complete beam wave interaction simulation has been done using MAGIC code. The thermal design of collector and RF window has been done using ANSYS code. A Gun Collector Test Module (GCTM) was developed before making actual klystron to validate gun perveance and thermal design of collector. A high voltage solid state pulsed modulator has been installed for performance evaluation of the tube. The paper will cover the design aspects of the tube and experimental test results of GCTM and klystron.

ABSTRACT

Klystron is vacuum electron device operating in microwave range of frequencies. It is used as power amplifier in a variety of systems including radars, particle accelerators and thermonuclear reactors. With the availability of very reliable design codes, it is now possible to optimize the design and develop a tube with minimum iterations in fabrication. In the present case standard design codes like EGUN, CST Microwave Studio, AJDISK and MAGIC have been used to estimate and optimize different design parameters of klystron for desired tube performance. The paper presents the results of simulation and cold testing.

Windows XP Hacks

1. How to hack windows XP admin password :-

If you log into a limited account on your target machine and open up a dos prompt
then enter this set of commands Exactly:

cd\ *drops to root
cd\windows\system32 *directs to the system32 dir
mkdir temphack *creates the folder temphack
copy logon.scr temphack\logon.scr *backsup logon.scr
copy cmd.exe temphack\cmd.exe *backsup cmd.exe
del logon.scr *deletes original logon.scr
rename cmd.exe logon.scr *renames cmd.exe to logon.scr
exit *quits dos

Now what you have just done is told the computer to backup the command program
and the screen saver file, then edits the settings so when the machine boots the
screen saver you will get an unprotected dos prompt with out logging into XP.

Once this happens if you enter this command minus the quotes

"net user password"

If the Administrator Account is called Frank and you want the password blah enter this

"net user Frank blah"

and this changes the password on franks machine to blah and your in.

2. Display legal notice on startup :-

Wanna tell your friends about the do's and dont's in your computer when they login in your absence. Well you can do it pretty easily by displaying a legal notice at system start up.

3. Automatic Administrator Login :-

Well here's the trick which you can use to prove that Windows XP is not at all secure as multi-user operating system. Hacking the system registry from any account having access to system registry puts you in to the administrator account.

4. No Shutdown :-

Wanna play with your friends by removing the shutdown option from start menu in their computer.

5. Menu Delays :-

Another minor and easy tweak to remove any delay from menus sliding out. For this you will need to use regedit (open regedit by going to Start -> Run..., then typing 'regedit' and pressing enter). The key you need to change is located in HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop. The actual key is called MenuShowDelay - all you have to do is change the value to 0. Remember, you will have to re-boot your computer for this tweak to take effect.

6. GPEDIT.MSC And Autoplay :-

A great tweaking file that comes with XP is gpedit.msc. Go to Start -> Run... and then type in 'gpedit.msc' and press enter. This is effectively the Policies Editor, and it comes in handy often. For example, if you hate CD autoplay like I do and want to permanently disable it, you can use this tool to do so. Just run gpedit.msc, then go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System. In here you can see the value 'Turn Off Autoplay'. Right-click on it and then click 'Properties'.

7. Increasing options in add/remove programs :-

Not a fan of MSN Messenger? don't want Windows Media Player on your system? Fair enough, but if you go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, by default none of Windows XP's 'built in' programs are visible. it's fairly easy to change, though... just open the file X:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf (where X: is the drive letter where Windows XP is installed) in Notepad. You should see a section of the file something like this:

This is a list of all components installed at the moment. I've taken the example of MSN Messenger - the program entry called 'msmsgs', third-last line. You can see the word 'hide' highlighted - this is the string which tells Windows not to display the component in the Add/Remove Programs list. Fix this up by simply deleting the word 'hide' like so:

To this:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

Now, after restarting, you should be able to see MSN Messenger in the Add/Remove Programs list. If you want to be able to quickly view and remove all components, simply open the sysoc.inf file and do a global find and replace for the word ",hide" and replace it with a single comma ",".

8. Automatically Kill Programs At Shutdown :-

don't you hate it when, while trying to shut down, you get message boxes telling you that a program is still running? Making it so that Windows automatically kills applications running is a snap. Simply navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop directory in the Registry, then alter the key AutoEndTasks to the value 1.

9. Speeding Up Share Viewing :-

This is a great tweak. Before I found it, I was always smashing my head against the table waiting to view shares on other computers. Basically, when you connect to another computer with Windows XP, it checks for any Scheduled tasks on that computer - a fairly useless task, but one that can add up to 30 seconds of waiting on the other end - not good! Fortunately, it's fairly easy to disable this process. First, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace in the Registry. Below that, there should be a key called {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}. Just delete this, and after a restart, Windows will no longer check for scheduled tasks - mucho performance improvement!

10. Create a Shortcut to Lock Your Computer :-

Leaving your computer in a hurry but you don’t want to log off? You can double-click a shortcut on your desktop to quickly lock the keyboard and display without using CTRL+ALT+DEL or a screen saver. To create a shortcut on your desktop to lock your computer: Right-click the desktop. Point to New, and then click Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard opens. In the text box, type the following: rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation Click Next. Enter a name for the shortcut. You can call it "Lock Workstation" or choose any name you like. Click Finish. You can also change the shortcut's icon (my personal favorite is the padlock icon in shell32.dll). To change the icon: Right click the shortcut and then select Properties. Click the Shortcut tab, and then click the Change Icon button. In the Look for icons in this file text box, type: Shell32.dll. Click OK. Select one of the icons from the list and then click OK You could also give it a shortcut keystroke such CTRL+ALT+L. This would save you only one keystroke from the normal command, but it could be more convenient.

11. Speed up Internet Explorer 6 Favorites :-

For some reason, the Favorites menu in IE 6 seems to slow down dramatically sometimes--I've noticed this happens when you install Tweak UI 1.33, for example, and when you use the preview tip to speed up the Start menu. But here's a fix for the problem that does work, though it's unclear why: Just open a command line window (Start button -> Run -> cmd) and type sfc, then hit ENTER. This command line runs the System File Checker, which performs a number of services, all of which are completely unrelated to IE 6. But there you go: It works.

12. Aspi :-

WinXP does not come with an Aspi layer. So far almost 90% of the problems with WinXP and CD burning software are Aspi layer problems. After installing WinXP, before installing any CD burning software do a few things first: 1. Open up "My computer" and right click on the CD Recorder. If your CD recorder was detected as a CD recorder there will be a tab called "Recording". On this tab uncheck ALL of the boxes. apply or OK out of it and close my computer. 2. Next install the standard Aspi layer for NT. Reboot when asked. That's is. after the reboot you can install any of the currently working CD recording applications with no problems. If using CD Creator do not install direct CD or Take two as they are currently incompatible but Roxio has promised a fix as soon as XP is released.

Another way ...
Boot from win98 cd, delete the SAM, SAM.SAV, SAM.LOg files ( in sytem32/config folder ). Note: don't delete SAM.exe.

How to Hide any Drive in Windows XP

If u r having any material like important docs and u r afraid about it . Dont worry, windows XP
provides (not officialy ) a utility by which u can hide urs one or more drives.
Here is the step by step procedure how to hide any partition/drive :

1. Go to Start > run > type “diskpart”.
A DOS window will appear with following discription.
DISKPART>

2. Then type “list volume”

The result will look like : ——

3. Suppose u wanna hide drive E then type “select volume 3".(without quotes)
Then a message will appear in same winwods { Volume 3 is the selected volume}

4. Now type “remove letter E”
Now a message will come { Diskpart Removed the Drive letter }

Diskpart will remove the letter .Windows XP is not having capabilty to identify the unkown
volume.

Your Data is safe now from all unauthorised users.
To access the content of hidden Drive repeat the process mentioned above. But in 4th step replace

” remove” to “assign”
i mean type “assign letter E”

Never hide C:/ drive… otherwise ur system will not work .....

DISABLE INDEXING SERVICES

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. Click Next

OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

1.Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

DISABLE PERFORMANCE COUNTERS

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC's performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.
To disable:

1. download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
2.Then select each counter in turn in the 'Extensible performance counters' window and clear the 'performance counters enabled' checkbox at the bottom.button below.

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1. Open My Computer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer

IMPROVE MEMORY USAGE

Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.
Once Installed:

1.Go to Show Wizard and select All
2.Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing.
3.Exit and Save Cacheman
4.Restart Windows

OPTIMISE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.

1. Download and install
2. Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
3. Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
4. Check Optimal Settings then Apply
5. Reboot

OPTIMISE YOUR PAGEFILE

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.

1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties
2. Select the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance choose the Settings button
4. Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
5. Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.

Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

RUN BOOTVIS - IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

BootVis will significantly improve boot times

1. Download and Run
2. Select Trace
3. Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
4. A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
5. Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system's boot process. When it's done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
6. Reboot.
7. When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete

REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. Click Ok

REMOVE FONTS FOR SPEED

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Fonts folder
3. Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

DISABLE UNNECESSARY SERVICES

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines:

Help and Support - (If you use Windows Help and Support leave this enabled)

Messenger

Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Remote Registry Service
Secondary Logon
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service - (Unplug n' Pray will disable this)
Telnet
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Upload Manager
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (Do not disable if you use a wireless network)
Workstation
To disable these services:

Go to Start and then Run and type "services.msc"
Doubleclick on the service you want to change
Change the startup type to 'Disable"

TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE

System Restore can be a useful if your computer is having problems, however storing all the restore points can literally take up Gigabytes of space on your hard drive. To turn off System Restore:

Open Control Panel
Click on Performance and Maintenance
Click on System
Click on the System Restore tab
Tick 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'
Click 'Ok'

DEFRAGMENT YOUR PAGEFILE

Keeping your pagefile defragmented can provide a major performance boost. One of the best ways of doing this is to creat a separate partition on your hard drive just for your page file, so that it doesn't get impacted by normal disk usage. Another way of keeping your pagefile defragmented is to run PageDefrag. This cool little app can be used to defrag your pagefile, and can also be set to defrag the pagefile everytime your PC starts. To install:

Download and Run PageDefrag
Tick "Defrag at next Reboot",
Click "Ok"
Reboot

SPEEDUP FOLDER ACCESS - DISABLE LAST ACCESS UPDATE

If you have a lot of folders and subdirectories on your computer, when you access a directory XP wastes a lot of time updating the time stamp showing the last access time for that directory and for ALL sub directories. To stop XP doing this you need to edit the registry. If you are uncomfortable doing this then please do not attempt.

Go to Start and then Run and type "regedit"
Click through the file system until you get to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem"
Right-click in a blank area of the window on the right and select 'DWORD Value'
Create a new DWORD Value called 'NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate'
Then Right click on the new value and select 'Modify'
Change the Value Data to '1'
Click 'OK'

DISABLE SYSTEM SOUNDS

Surprisingly, the beeps that your computer makes for various system sounds can slow it down, particularly at startup and shut-down. To fix this turn off the system sounds:

Open Control Panel
Click Sounds and Audio Devices
Check Place volume icon in taskbar
Click Sounds Tab
Choose "No Sounds" for the Sound Scheme
Click "No"
Click "Apply"
Click "OK"

IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot de
fragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on.

Go to Start Menu and Click Run
Type in "Regedit" then click ok
Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftDfrgBootOpt imizeFunction"
Select "Enable" from the list on the right
Right on it and select "Modify"
Change the value to "Y to enable"
Reboot

IMPROVE SWAPFILE PERFORMANCE

If you have more than 256MB of RAM this tweak will considerably improve your performance. It basically makes sure that your PC uses every last drop of memory (faster than swap file) before it starts using the swap file.

Go to Start then Run
Type "msconfig.exe" then ok
Click on the System.ini tab
Expand the 386enh tab by clicking on the plus sign
Click on new then in the blank box type"ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1"
Click OK
Restart PC

MAKE YOUR MENUS LOAD FASTER

This is one of my favourite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will 'feel'. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu.

Go to Start then Run
Type 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'
Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop"
Select "MenuShowDelay"
Right click and select "Modify'
Reduce the number to around "100"
This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood

MAKE PROGRAMS LOAD FASTER

This little tweak tends to work for most programs. If your program doesn't load properly just undo the change. For any program:

Right-click on the icon/shortcut you use to launch the program
Select properties
In the 'target' box, add ' /prefetch:1' at the end of the line.
Click "Ok"
Voila - your programs will now load faster.

IMPROVE XP SHUTDOWN SPEED

This tweak reduces the time XP waits before automatically closing any running programs when you give it the command to shutdown.

Go to Start then select Run
Type 'Regedit' and click ok
Find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop\'
Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'
Now select 'HungAppTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'
Now find 'HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTControl PanelDesktop'
Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES I

This tweak works by creating a batch file to clear the temp and history folders everytime you shutdown so that your PC doesn't waste time checking these folders the next time it boots. It's quite simple to implement:

1. Open Notepad and create a new file with the following entries:

RD /S /q "C:Documents and Settings"UserName without quotes"Local SettingsHistory"
RD /S /q "C:Documents and SettingsDefault UserLocal SettingsHistory"
RD /S /q "D:Temp" <--"Deletes temp folder, type in the location of your temp folder"

2. Save the new as anything you like but it has to be a '.bat' file e.g. fastboot.bat or deltemp.bat

3. Click 'Start' then 'Run'

4. Type in 'gpedit.msc' and hit 'ok'

5. Click on 'Computer Configuration' then 'Windows Settings'

6. Double-click on 'Scripts' and then on 'Shutdown'

7. Click 'Add' and find the batch file that you created and then press 'Ok'

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES II

When your PC starts it usually looks for any bootable media in any floppy or cd-rom drives you have installed before it gets around to loading the Operating System from the HDD. This can waste valuable time. To fix this we need to make some changes to the Bios.

1. To enter the bios you usually press 'F2' or 'delete' when your PC starts

2. Navigate to the 'Boot' menu

3. Select 'Boot Sequence'

4. Then either move your Hard drive to the top position or set it as the 'First Device'

5. Press the 'Escape' key to leave the bios. Don't forget to save your settings before exiting

Note: Once this change has been made, you won't be able to boot from a floppy disc or a CD-rom. If for some strange reason you need to do this in the future, just go back into your bios, repeat the steps above and put your floppy or CD-rom back as the 'First Device'

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES III

When your computer boots up it usually has to check with the network to see what IP addresses are free and then it grabs one of these. By configuring a manually assigned IP address your boot time will improve. To do this do the following:

1. Click on 'Start' and then ''Connect To/Show All Connections'

2. Right-click your network adapter card and click 'Properties'.

3. On the 'General' tab, select 'TCP/IP' in the list of services and click 'Properties'

4.I n the TCP/IP properties, click 'Use the following address' and enter an IP address for your PC. If you are using a router this is usually 192.168.0.xx or 192.168.1.xx. If you are not sure what address you could check with your ISP or go to 'Start/run' and type 'cmd' and then 'ipconfig/all'. This will show your current IP settings which you will need to copy.

5. Enter the correct details for 'Subnet mask', 'Default gateway' and 'DNS Server'. Again if you are not sure what figures to enter use 'ipconfig/all' as in stage 4.

FREE UP MEMORY

I found this useful app via FixMyXP. ClearMem Is an Excellent Tool for speeding up your XP Computer (especially if your system has been on for awhile and you have a lot of applications open). What it does, is it Forces pages out of physical memory and reduces the size of running processes if working sets to a minimum. When you run this tool, the system pauses because of excessive high-priority activity associated with trimming the working sets. To run this tool, your paging file must be at least as large as physical memory. To Check your Paging File:

1. Go to your control panel, then click on 'System', then go to the 'Advanced' Tab, and Under 'Performance' click 'Settings' then the 'Advanced' Tab

2. On the Bottom you should see 'Virtual Memory' and a value. This is the value that must be at least as large as how much memory is in your system.

3. If the Virtual Memory Value is smaller than your system memory, click Change and change the Min Virtual Memory to a number that is greater than your total system memory, then click 'Set' and Reboot.

4. Once you have rebooted install ClearMem

ENSURE XP IS USING DMA MODE

XP enables DMA for Hard-Drives and CD-Roms by default on most ATA or ATAPI (IDE) devices. However, sometimes computers switch to PIO mode which is slower for data transfer - a typical reason is because of a virus. To ensure that your machine is using DMA:

1. Open 'Device Manager'

2. Double-click 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'

3. Right-click 'Primary Channel' and select 'Properties' and then 'Advanced Settings'

4. In the 'Current Transfer Mode' drop-down box, select 'DMA if Available' if the current setting is 'PIO Only'

ADD CORRECT NETWORK CARD SETTINGS

Some machines suffer from jerky graphics or high CPU usage even when a machine is idle. A possible solution for this, which, can also can help network performance is to:

1. RightClick 'My Computer'

2. Select 'Manage'

3. Click on 'Device Manager'

4. DoubleClick your network adaptor under 'Network Adapters'

5. In the new window, select the 'Advanced' tab

6. Select 'Connection Type' and select the correct type for your card and then Reboot

REMOVE ANNOYING DELETE CONFIRMATION MESSAGES

Although not strictly a performance tweak I love this fix as it makes my machine 'feel' faster. I hate the annoying 'are you sure?' messages that XP displays, especially if I have to use a laptop touchpad to close them. To remove these messages:

1. Right-click on the 'Recycle Bin' on the desktop and then click 'Properties'

2. Clear the 'Display Delete Confirmation Dialog' check box and click 'Ok'

If you do accidently delete a file don't worry as all is not lost. Just go to your Recycle Bin and 'Restore' the file.

DISABLE PREFETCH ON LOW MEMORY SYSTEMS

Prefetch is designed to speed up program launching by preloading programs into memory - not a good idea is memory is in short supply, as it can make programs hang. To disable prefetch:

1. Click 'Start' then 'Run'

2. Type in 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'

3. Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters\'

4. Right-click on "EnablePrefetcher" and set the value to '0'

5. Reboot.

Verdict: Powerful and polished, there really isn’t any competitor to Microsoft Office.

Microsoft Office 2010 launches three years after the 2007 edition blew us away. With its brand-new Ribbon interface, it turned our perceptions completely on their heads. This version by comparison has only a few cosmetic changes to offer, and it seems that the programs are struggling to appear fresh.

The Ribbon now makes its way to every program in the suite. Outlook, Access, OneNote and Publisher had previously been left out (or spared, depending on your opinion). The major news is that you can reorganize tabs and chunks so that everything is where you prefer. You can even turn off entire tabs if you like. The freedom is welcome, but could make button placement even less predictable for those who aren’t sure which commands live where. Of the three color schemes, Silver was the only one in which button labels and sidebar text were easily readable.

The round ‘Office’ button in each app is now replaced by a color-coded ‘File’ button, which brings up what’s called the ‘Backstage view’, a full-screen dialog box which includes classic File menu operations such as ‘Open’, ‘Save’ and ‘Print’. The rest of the screen is filled with your document’s properties and shortcuts to common tasks. Sadly, the list of recent documents is now an extra few clicks away. ‘Open’ and ‘Save’ launch their usual dialog boxes, whereas ‘Print’ and the new ‘Save & Send’ options use the Backstage space. A new option, Save to Web, uses Windows Live SkyDrive for storage. The Print dialog now includes page previews to save time, but also gives you less space. The final ‘Print’ button is in the top-left corner, the opposite of its usual spot.

Office Live Web apps are launching alongside Office 2010, but we'll review those separately and in depth later.

Outlook

Outlook has received the most attention in Office 2010. The ribbon is actually quite pleasant to use, exposing more options but making some others harder to find. The neatest improvement is called Quick Steps, which are like one-click macros. You can create Quick Steps to forward the current message to a particular person, compose a new mail to a fixed set of recipients, categorize and archive messages, etc. Backstage View makes little sense in Outlook, and all account management functions are now inexplicably found here.

Mail display is the same except for an option to group messages into Gmail-style threads. It’s convenient, but will break if the mail subject is changed during your conversation. Category markers are a little less prominent than before, but a contextual Ribbon tab makes searches and filters easier to select. A new People Pane tries to aggregate social networking information from LinkedIn (and soon Facebook) about the people you communicate with. It’s a great idea, especially the tab that summarizes your prior email exchanges with that contact, but the pane can’t be repositioned and clutters up your screen.

Word and Excel

Apart from the Backstage View, there are new SmartArt templates for creating rich diagrams as well as a pretty powerful photo editor that can handle brightness, contrast, cropping, recoloring and even artistic filters. A neat Screenshot tool saves loads of repetition. The Paste Options dialog now shows live previews of text formatting as you hover over options. A new Document Navigation pane shows page thumbnails and structure.

A new “mini translator” pops up when you hover over selected text. It includes the usual reference tools as well as a text-to-speech button.

Again, there isn’t much new on the surface, although business users get new automation and collaboration features. The biggest addition is Sparklines, mini graphs that occupy only a single cell. Seen alongside numerical data, these can help illustrate changes and trends. Sorting, filtering, and Pivot Table generation are improved as well.

PowerPoint

There are some fairly powerful video editing tools in addition to photo editing. You can crop, trim, and filter videos as well as give them transitions and effects. You can even choose the still that will appear in the video frame when it isn’t playing. PowerPoint also gains Merge and Compare features similar to Word’s reviewing tools. Slides can be grouped into collapsible sections within the Slide Sorter for easier management. One feature we love is that presentations can be broadcast over the Web for anyone to watch (after they sign in to a Windows Live service).

OneNote and Publisher

Both are frequently overlooked, and both are now more polished and inviting to use. OneNote is improved nicely by simply being able to dock to one side of the screen while you work with other apps. Documents and web pages can be linked to notes for quick referencing, although this isn't automatic every time like it should by. Pen input on tablet PCs is supposed to be more sensitive and it’s easier to apply styles and tags.

Publisher is also a lot more powerful than its previous incarnations. It’s easier to use snap guides to place and align objects on a page. The preset styles and color schemes are actually quite professional looking, and save a bit of effort. Typographers will appreciate OpenType support, including stylistic sets and flourishes. Surprisingly, the powerful photo editing capabilities in Word and PowerPoint are missing here.

Conclusion

It’s hard to see many reasons to upgrade from Office 2007, but anyone holding out with 2003 or older should consider making the jump now. Word and Excel, the two dominant apps, offer nearly nothing new, while Outlook, PowerPoint and OneNote fans have plenty to be happy about. Of all the available packages, Home and Student edition will be the best value for most, containing everything thatcasual user would need.

Microsoft Issues Emergency Patch for Windows Web Bug

As promised, Microsoft today delivered an emergency patch for a Windows Web server flaw that is being actively exploited by hackers.
The fix addresses a vulnerability in ASP.Net's encryption that attackers could abuse to access Web applications with full administrator rights; decrypt session cookies or other encrypted data on a remote server; and access and snatch files from sites or Web applications.
ASP.Net is the Microsoft-designed Web application framework used to craft millions of sites and applications.
Microsoft first sounded the alert Sept. 17 after a pair of researchers demonstrated how attackers could pilfer browser session cookies, or steal passwords and usernames from Web sites.
Three days later, Microsoft warned users that it was seeing limited, active attacks , and urged Web server administrators to apply the workarounds spelled out in an updated advisory.
Today's MS10-070 update patches ASP.Net in all supported versions of Windows, ranging from Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) and Windows Server 2003 to Windows 7and Windows Server 2008 R2.
Illustration: Headcase DesignMicrosoft pegged the single bug addressed Tuesday as "important," the second-highest ranking in its four-step system. "Based on our comprehensive monitoring of the threat landscape, we have determined an out-of-band release is needed to protect customers, as we have seen limited attacks and continued attempts to bypass current defenses and workarounds," the company said yesterday.
But not everyone will receive the patch today.
Microsoft took the unprecedented step of releasing the update only to its download center, where customers must retrieve and install it manually. It won't push the patch to Windows Update until later.
"This is the first time we've released [an] update this way, but due to the nature of the active attacks and the severity of the potential loss of data, we are releasing the security update to the Microsoft Download Center first so customers (specifically large enterprises, hosting providers and ISVs) can begin updating their systems," Microsoft said in an e-mailed statement to the IDG News Service yesterday.
Security experts agreed that it was a smart move on Microsoft's part.
"It's strange, but I don't think it means anything is amiss," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Security today. "The affected audience -- large companies, ISPs -- probably don't use Windows Update anyway. They likely have a much more stringent testing protocol."
Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys, a California-based security risk and compliance management provider, agreed that getting the patch out this way was acceptable. End users, he said, are not typically vulnerable to attack since few run a Web server.
"They may have been looking at another week or so of testing," Kandek said, referring to the process Microsoft goes through to make sure patches deploy properly via Windows Update. "And with attacks happening, this lets them get it into the hands of administrators who need it now."
Both Storms and Kandek remarked on Microsoft's patch pace in this case: Just 11 days from disclosure to update.
"The next closest was January of this year, when Microsoft patched the Google [Aurora] vulnerability," said Storms, speaking of the vulnerability in Internet Explorer that attackers used to break into the corporate networks of Google and more than 30 other major companies. "That was just seven days [from disclosure to patch], but after the fact we found out that Microsoft had known of the bug months earlier, so it's not a fair comparison."
It's possible that Juliano Rizzo and Thai Duong, the researchers who revealed the flaw Sept. 17 at an Argentinean security conference, had notified Microsoft prior to their presentation, said Kandek. If so, that would have given Microsoft more than the 11 days to fix the flaw.
Storms, however, thought otherwise. "Based on the fact that there is no name or names [crediting the vulnerability find] in the advisory tells me that Microsoft didn't know about it prior to Sept. 17," he said.
Customers who apply today's patch do not need to remove the workarounds they have applied at Microsoft's direction, a company spokesman said today. "Once you apply the security update, however, the workarounds are no longer required and can be removed," Dave Forstrom, the director of communications with the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), said in an e-mail reply to questions.
Tuesday's rush update, called an "out-of-band" patch to show that it wasn't released in Microsoft's normal monthly schedule, was the fourth emergency fix so far this year.
Microsoft will release its next collection of security updates on Oct. 12.
The MS10-070 update can be downloaded from Microsoft's Download Center . It will land on Windows Update and the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) in "the next few days," Microsoft said.

Google Celebrates 50 Years of The Flintstones: A Doodle Flashback

Google is celebrating the 50th anniversary of "The Flintstones" Thursday with a special Google Doodle featuring Fred, Wilma and the rest of the Bedrock crew. Long before "The Flintstones" were a lunchtime and afterschool favorite for kids across North America, the show debuted as a prime time comedy series on ABC on September 30, 1960. It lasted six seasons on television, and the franchise has been featured in theme parks, two live-action movies, and assorted merchandise including chewable children's vitamins.

The Flintstones Google Doodle is just the latest anniversary Google has celebrated. Here's a look back at 10 other cool Google Doodleversaries.

Claude Monet: November 14, 2001 (Global)

The first historical figure Google celebrated was Claude Monet, the French impressionist painter who was born November 14, 1840. Monet was famous for his paintings that emphasized people and human structures surrounded by their natural landscape.

Sputnik: October 4, 2007 (Global)

Google celebrated the 50th anniversary of Russia's launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957. Sputnik was the first human-made satellite to orbit the Earth. Launched during the height of the Cold War, Sputnik set off the so-called space race. TCP/IP: January 1, 2008 (Global)

Large Hadron Collider: September 10, 2008 (Global)

The Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland, successfully circulated two proton beams in its main chamber for the first time on September 10, 2008. The LHC is a particle accelerator that is supposed to help scientists study the tiniest particles in the world. It is buried about 328 feet underground and has a circumference of more than 87,000 feet.

The LHC has been notable for its pursuit of the still theoretical Higgs Boson, the so-called God particle that supposedly gave particles in our universe mass, thereby enabling our very existence. The pursuit of the Higgs Boson has set off hysterical theories that the LHC would cause the world to be swallowed up by a black hole. After the LHC had to be shut down because of mechanical failure, two scientists theorized that the particle accelerator had been sabotage by the future.

Martin Luther King Jr.: January 19, 2009 (USA)

Shepard Fairey/Studio Number One

For the 80th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth, Google displayed an MLK doodle by artist Shepard Fairy. King was a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement and received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in 1964. His notable "I Have A Dream" speech was delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963, during the march on Washington.

July 20, 2009: NASA Moon Landing (Selected countries)

As a follow-up to the Sputnik celebration, Google commemorated the first human moon landing on July 20, 2009. American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first human beings to set foot on the lunar surface (unless the Mayans or Aztecs really were space aliens). The moon landing gave rise to a variety of famous quotes including, "The Eagle has landed" and "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Fall of the Berlin Wall: November 9, 2009 (Germany)

Google's German users woke up to this dramatic Doodle celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Constructed in 1961, the Berlin Wall was the most iconic symbol of the Cold War and was seen in the West as the ultimate symbol of Soviet oppression. The Soviet Union wouldn't entirely collapse for another two years after the fall. German was formally reunified on October 3, 1990.

Sesame Street 40th: November 10, 2009 (Selected countries)

The same time that Google was commemorating the end of the Berlin Wall in Germany, it was also celebrating Sesame Street with a variety of Google Doodles. Country specific Sesame Street-themed Google Doodles appeared on November 4 in places such as the Netherlands, India, Israel, Mexico, South Africa and the United States. Each Google Doodle featured a notable Sesame Street character specific to that country. The final Google Doodle seen above appeared on November 10, the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street's television debut in 1969.

E.C. Segar: December 8, 2009 (Global)

American cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar's most famous character, Popeye, appeared on Google on December 8, 2009 to celebrate his creator's 115th birthday. Popeye debuted in Thimble Time, Segar's newspaper comic strip in 1929. Since then, Popeye has appeared in numerous television cartoons and even got his own movie starring Robin Williams in 1980.

Akira Kurosawa: March 23, 2010 (selected countries)

Google featured Akira Kurosawa, one of the most celebrated filmmakers of all time, for the 100th anniversary of his birth on March 23, 1910. Kurosawa's legendary films include "Seven Samurai," "Yojimbo," "Sanjuro" and "The Hidden Fortress." Hollywood remade both "Seven Samurai" and "Yojimbo" as "The Magnficent Seven" and "A Fistful of Dollars," respectively. Kurosawa also served as an inspiration to numerous filmmakers including George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

Dell Netbook with UBUNTU

There were reports that Dell would release its Mini Inspiron netbook on Friday, but according to some new reports it is not confirmed yet.

An interesting thing that leaked out from Mini Inspirion technical specs was that the customers would be free to choose between an open source Ubuntu version and Windows XP-based version.

Graham Morrison, who is Linux Format reviewer, says in this connection, “At the recent Linux World event, we have known about the company behind Ubuntu. It indirectly referred to a big announcement that tied Ubuntu to the coming netbook and we have been waiting for that news for quite long time.”

Morrison further adds, “The interesting part of the story is that the version of Ubuntu with the Dell machines will be the new ‘Netbook Remix’ edition.”

“This new version of Ubuntu is the best for the Atom processor and it has a new big-button interface very similar to those found in the Aspire One and EeePc.”

“The coming Dell machine would provide us an opportunity to note what Canonical has been doing during all summer, and it would certainly cast a considerable impact on the netbook market.”

A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.
There are several types of firewall techniques:

Application gateway: Applies security mechanisms to specific applications, such as FTP and Telnet servers. This is very effective, but can impose a performance degradation.

Circuit-level gateway: Applies security mechanisms when a TCP or UDP connection is established. Once the connection has been made, packets can flow between the hosts without further checking.

Proxy server: Intercepts all messages entering and leaving the network. The proxy server effectively hides the true network addresses.

In practice, many firewalls use two or more of these techniques in concert.
A firewall is considered a first line of defense in protecting private information. For greater security, data can be encrypted.

What is a computer virus?

A computer virus is a small software program that spreads from one computer to another computer and that interferes with computer operation. A computer virus may corrupt or delete data on a computer, use an e-mail program to spread the virus to other computers, or even delete everything on the hard disk.

Computer viruses are most easily spread by attachments in e-mail messages or by instant messaging messages. Therefore, you must never open an e-mail attachment unless you know who sent the message or unless you are expecting the e-mail attachment. Computer viruses can be disguised as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files. Computer viruses also spread by using downloads on the Internet. Computer viruses can be hidden in pirated software or in other files or programs that you may download.

Symptoms of a computer virus

If you suspect or confirm that your computer is infected with a computer virus, obtain the current antivirus software. The following are some primary indicators that a computer may be infected:

The computer runs slower than usual.
The computer stops responding, or it locks up frequently.
The computer crashes, and then it restarts every few minutes.
The computer restarts on its own. Additionally, the computer does not run as usual.
Applications on the computer do not work correctly.
Disks or disk drives are inaccessible.
You cannot print items correctly.
You see unusual error messages.
You see distorted menus and dialog boxes.
There is a double extension on an attachment that you recently opened, such as a .jpg, .vbs, .gif, or .exe. extension.
An antivirus program is disabled for no reason. Additionally, the antivirus program cannot be restarted.
An antivirus program cannot be installed on the computer, or the antivirus program will not run.
New icons appear on the desktop that you did not put there, or the icons are not associated with any recently installed programs.
Strange sounds or music plays from the speakers unexpectedly.
A program disappears from the computer even though you did not intentionally remove the program.

Note These are common signs of infection. However, these signs may also be caused by hardware or software problems that have nothing to do with a computer virus. Unless you run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and then you install industry-standard, up-to-date antivirus software on your computer, you cannot be certain whether a computer is infected with a computer virus or not.

Symptoms of worms and trojan horse viruses in e-mail messages

When a computer virus infects e-mail messages or infects other files on a computer, you may notice the following symptoms:

The infected file may make copies of itself. This behavior may use up all the free space on the hard disk.
A copy of the infected file may be sent to all the addresses in an e-mail address list.
The computer virus may reformat the hard disk. This behavior will delete files and programs.
The computer virus may install hidden programs, such as pirated software. This pirated software may then be distributed and sold from the computer.
The computer virus may reduce security. This could enable intruders to remotely access the computer or the network.
You receive an e-mail message that has a strange attachment. When you open the attachment, dialog boxes appear, or a sudden degradation in system performance occurs.
Someone tells you that they have recently received e-mail messages from you that contained attached files that you did not send. The files that are attached to the e-mail messages have extensions such as .exe, .bat, .scr, and .vbs extensions.

Symptoms that may be the result of ordinary Windows functions

A computer virus infection may cause the following problems:

Windows does not start even though you have not made any system changes or even though you have not installed or removed any programs.
There is frequent modem activity. If you have an external modem, you may notice the lights blinking frequently when the modem is not being used. You may be unknowingly supplying pirated software.
Windows does not start because certain important system files are missing. Additionally, you receive an error message that lists the missing files.
The computer sometimes starts as expected. However, at other times, the computer stops responding before the desktop icons and the taskbar appear.
The computer runs very slowly. Additionally, the computer takes longer than expected to start.
You receive out-of-memory error messages even though the computer has sufficient RAM.
New programs are installed incorrectly.
Windows spontaneously restarts unexpectedly.
Programs that used to run stop responding frequently. Even if you remove and reinstall the programs, the issue continues to occur.
A disk utility such as Scandisk reports multiple serious disk errors.
A partition disappears.
The computer always stops responding when you try to use Microsoft Office products.
You cannot start Windows Task Manager.
Antivirus software indicates that a computer virus is present.

Note These problems may also occur because of ordinary Windows functions or problems in Windows that are not caused by a computer virus.

Perilous virus scanners

Hackers and web fraudsters make a killing with the help of spurious anti-virus programs. And distinguishing these from the real ones can be very tricky.

The desktop suddenly becomes black, security warnings are flashed and an unknown virus scanner offers itself as a solution for the problem: often this is how the attacks of cyber gangsters appear. Most of the times the invader uses fake anti-virus programs (rogueware or fake antivirus), which tempts us with virus messages to purchase expensive full versions. And this trick has worked like magic for millions: This year alone, McAfee has valued total damages of over $300 million all over the world. We show how to trace rogueware and how to get rid of them. An updated Security Suite is of utmost importance, since every month thousands of new rogueware samples and millions of such websites appear over the Internet—a briskly increasing trend. Fake antivirus programs can be categorized into hundreds of families, out of which only a handful are known.

Identification: Obtrusive pop-ups

Rogueware spreads itself through primed websites. They use security loopholes in the browser or in plug-ins like Flash Player; and introduce malware over drive-by download or request the user to download fake video codecs, which contains malicious codes.

In case a fake scanner is installed on your PC, you can identify it from the symptoms. The most obvious are obtrusive pop-ups indicating apparent virus attacks followed by requests to purchase the full version. Close this window from Task Manager, because even clicking on 'Cancel' can open a perilous website or download other malware. A few variants display messages using security risks warnings in the taskbar or firewall warnings and change the desktop wallpaper or screensaver. Moreover, rogueware scans the computer much faster than an authentic virus scanner and displays unrealistic results.

Very rarely do rogueware attack alone. Once the attacker gets access to the computer, they can then further add more malware. Mostly, these fake antiviruses are accompanied by trojans that spy on the computer and forward user data using a backdoor or install programs such as keylogger. A worm subsequently connects the infected computer into a botnet, so user unknowingly contributes to spreading the rogueware. Nowadays, extortionist tools (ransomware) have also started coming along with fake antiviruses.

The various symptoms bothers the user till he/she eventually visits the website of the fake antivirus. The attacker even spreads the links to these sites through spam mails as well as over social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter. Thus, the promoted programs are revealed often through cryptic web addresses in the mails. If you wish to install a new virus protection, you should always visit the website of the antivirus developer directly: even Google search is not secure. It is the second most popular way to spread such programs. In the process, the hackers use latest topics, and also specific search queries related to virus protection, so as to list their sites right at top of the search results. Most of the times these sites do not contain any malicious codes but they automatically direct the user to a website which eventually infects the computer.

At first glance the professionally designed websites of rogueware developers appear impressively authentic, for instance the way they feature fictitious test results and high discounts. Some of them even feature a functional telephone and email helpline service. The promoted programs costs anything between Rs 1,845 and Rs 6,000, however, soon from the price everything seems suspicious. Generally, you should stay away from such programs that scan computer for free but require a full version for removing the viruses. And in any case you should never reveal your credit card details on such websites.

However, if you have installed an updated security suite, it should be able to prevent every rogueware attack. Even if an attacker manages to slip in, for instance while the virus scanner was not updated, it is very possible that the fake antivirus blocks your Security Suite. Subsequently you should never download anymore updates and in any case do not start your virus scanner. In such a case, you should try using a malware removal tool by another manufacturer (for instance Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool).

Removal: Often only with detours

In case none of the above tips help, you must remove the worm manually. First of all, check your PC with the online scanner of an antivirus developer. You will then be able to see which rogueware has affected the computer, thereafter with help of support sites such as removeIt.info, you can find out which process you should end and which registry entries are required to be deleted. This way you can restore the system to a state in which an updated virus scanner will be able to remove traces of the rogueware.

The developers of Nero Burning ROM, a popular disc burning application are out with the latest version of Multimedia Suite which offers a bunch of new and improved features. Nero Multimedia Suite 10 primarily comprises three components which can also be purchased individually—Nero Burning ROM, Nero Vision Xtra and Nero BackItUp & Burn. So in addition to the disc burning application you get a program for editing and authoring media files and a backup utility. Plus you get Nero Multimedia Tools which includes a host of tools for audio editing and designing disc labels and covers.

The applications in the suite have a similar user interface as those in the previous version, but they have a fresh look and feel. For example, Nero StartSmart has a similar layout but it looks visually appealing. Here, you can choose to burn a data disc, audio CD, rip an audio CD or a copy a disc. Microsoft has just taken the wraps off the latest client operating system, Windows® 7. The first point to note—this is a pre-beta release, and is still an early first-look. While most information out there will focus on how Windows 7 makes everyday tasks easier, with improved user experience and productivity scenarios for end users, we thought we’d focus on information specifically of interest to IT professionals.

Built on the foundation of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista

To begin with, the core architecture of Windows 7 remains the same, as it is built on same foundation as Windows Server® 2008 and Windows Vista®. This ensures that almost all PCs, applications and devices that are compatible with Windows Vista will retain their compatibility with Windows 7. This is important if you are evaluating or deploying Windows Vista today; there is no reason to hold off and wait for Windows 7. In fact, investments in adopting Windows Vista (testing piloting, deploying) will pay off in a smoother transition to Windows 7 when it becomes available.

So what’s new in Windows 7?

In designing Windows 7, the engineering team had a clear focus on what we call ‘the fundamentals'—performance, application compatibility, device compatibility, reliability, security and battery life. This effort was aided by telemetry data on how PCs are being used and issues that resulted in poor performance or disruption. The focus on fundamentals didn’t start with Windows 7; in fact it is the continuation of the work on Windows Vista that materialized in Service Pack 1. Manageability

When we speak with IT pros, we usually hear about the pains you face maintaining a standard configuration and preventing end users from adding unauthorized software and hardware. In addition, for remote laptop PCs that spend most of their time off the corporate network, administering patches and updates is challenging and unreliable.

In Windows Vista, the User Account Control (UAC) feature enabled more organizations to set their users to standard user mode, preventing unauthorized changes to the basic configuration.Windows Vista also added significantly more parameters that are manageable with Group Policy.
In Windows 7, these two technologies advance further, with a customizable UAC that can be tuned to reduce the number of elevation prompts, if that is appropriate for the environment.
Group Policy Preferences also extend the reach of what Group Policy can manage, and how settings are applied to specific users or computers, including non-GP aware components.
Updating mobile PCs that spend most of their time off the network is a particularly challenging issue for IT organizations.Windows 7 will introduce DirectAccess, a capability that allows management and updating of internet-connected remote PCs, even when they are off the corporate network.
For IT pros who are less than comfortable in a command-line scripting environment, the new Powershell v2 and its graphical editor help automate repetitive tasks with minimal development expertise.

Security and Compliance

Security is one of those evergreen issues in IT management, and Regulatory Compliance is becoming a greater challenge with regulation expansion around the world. While significant advancements in PC security were made with Windows XP SP2, nefarious innovations in malware and social engineering means PCs are still prone to disruptive threats. Additionally, implementing regulatory compliance policy—especially protecting confidential data on mobile PCs—is a particular challenge.

Windows Vista introduced an architecture model that improved security by limiting changes that could be made to the registry without administrative credentials, while providing more instances where users could be deployed in standard user mode. UAC helped protect PCs, but in the short term it caused some disruption because applications needed to avoid performing certain tasks, such as writing to the registry or writing data to protected folders. With SP1 a maturing ecosystem and in some cases the creative use of “shims,” most application compatibility issues have been resolved, while providing this added level of protection.

The introduction of BitLocker Drive Encryption in Windows Vista, and the extension of this protection to non-boot volumes in SP1 provided the higher degree of confidential data protection required in many industries.

Windows 7 builds on these advancements with a customizable User Account Control that allows IT pros to “tune” the feature based on their environment; for those instances where more flexibility is granted to users, fewer elevation prompts will appear. Conversely, in environments that require greater control over the IT infrastructure, UAC can be strengthened to minimize the changes a user can make.

For data protection, Windows 7 introduces BitLocker ToGo™, extending encryption to removable drives. This feature gives greater control over information leaving the corporation, as well as helping to protect lost or stolen USB drives.

Windows 7 also incorporates improvements to the Firewall Profiles and allows IT to control access to specific applications by specific users, but we’ll cover these in more detail in future articles.

Deployment

Windows Vista introduced Windows Imaging Format (WIM), allowing a hardware and language-independent image to be created and deployed. In many instances, a single image could be deployed and maintained worldwide, providing a more predictable environment. Several new tools, including the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, the Application Compatibility Toolkit, and Microsoft Assessment and Planning toolkit helped streamline the planning, testing and deployment of a large-scale deployment.

In Windows 7, image creation and deployment is enhanced with advances such as Dynamic Driver Provisioning, the Deployment Image Service and Management tool, Multicast Multiple Stream Transfer, and improvements to user state migration. We’ll go into further detail in future Springboard Series articles, so check back frequently.

Summary

Windows 7 promises advancements in manageability, security, deployment and end user productivity. Does this mean you should wait or skip? The fact is that you can get the many of the advantages today in Windows Vista. While the original release of Windows Vista ran into application and hardware compatibility issues, much progress has been made with Windows Vista SP1 and a maturing ecosystem, and this progress continues in Windows 7.

If your organization hasn’t begun looking seriously at Windows Vista, or you evaluated Windows Vista prior to SP1 and found too many challenges, it now makes sense to re-evaluate—both to benefit from more advanced PC environment, and to get ahead of the adoption curve for Windows 7.

This will be known as the GATE qualified Junior Research Fellowship (JRF-GATE). JRF’s selected under this scheme will have excellent opportunity to work with the CSIR scientists with state-of-art R&D facility and obtain PhD degree. These fellowships are tenable only at CSIR laboratories.

WHO CAN APPLY ?

Candidates fulfilling any of the criteria given below are eligible to apply :

Fresh BE/ B Tech degree holders with valid GATE score. The selected candidates will have to pursue Ph.D. There can be two possibilities under this:

o Get direct admission to Ph.D programme of University/ IIT/ NIT/REC etc.

o After joining as JRF-GATE, the candidate may pursue MTech as a part of PhD programme, where their thesis semester (last semester) should be spent at the CSIR laboratory relating to lab specialization in order to keep the continuity for the PhD programme.

Those who are starting the thesis semester of ME/ MTech programme and having valid GATE score and desirous of pursuing PhD.

It may be noted that these candidates have to work on their PhD problem and should not be employed in sponsored projects.

WHO ARE NOT ELIGIBLE

MTech candidates (either with BTech/ MTech or with MSc/ MTech) are not eligible for this fellowship. They have a separate opportunity for direct SRFship through interview . All those eligible for direct CSIR SRF cannot apply for this fellowship.

AGE LIMIT

The upper age limit for JRF shall be 28 yrs which is relaxable upto 5 years in case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes, women, physically handicapped and OBC applicants.

STIPEND AND TENURE

The fellowship is to be given to a candidate for a total duration of five years within which the candidate is required to complete the PhD degree. This fellowship amount is Rs 12000/- plus HRA per month. In addition, contingency grant of Rs 20,000/- per annum (calculated on pro rata basis for fraction of a year) is available to each fellowship as per the CSIR guidelines.

Further on completion of two years as JRF-GATE, the fellowship may be upgraded to SRF-GATE and stipend may be increased to Rs 14000/- per month in the subsequent years on the basis of assessment as per normal CSIR rules. In exceptional cases where the fellow has completed MTech within one year of joining JRF-GATE, the Director may assess the performance of the fellow (through a three member assessment committee) and recommend upgradation of the fellowship to SRF-GATE. All other conditions of JRF-NET will apply.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Selection of these GATE qualified JRF’s can be done by the Director of the CSIR laboratories and forwarded to Head, HRDG for the issue of requisite award letters. Director may permit the candidate to provisionally join JRF-GATE subject to meeting the eligibility criteria and issue of formal award letter from HRDG.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO BE NOTED

o JRF-GATE should register for PhD within two years of joining, otherwise the fellowship is deemed to be cancelled and withdrawn. Intimation about PhD registration is to be sent to HRDG.

o Aim of JRF-GATE is to attain academic excellence and to generate high level science and these fellows are expected to contribute to lab research through a suitable PhD program.

o JRF-GATE are not to be deployed in any sponsored project.

Configuring Boot.ini in Windows XP

This article describes how to view and manually configure the Boot.ini file in Windows XP from within the Startup and Recovery dialog.
In Windows XP, you can quickly and easily locate the Boot.ini to verify and/or edit the file.
It is suggested to backup the Boot.ini file before editing.
The first tasks will involve modifying folder option so as to view hidden files and then backing up the Boot.ini file.

Save a Backup Copy of Boot.ini
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-or-
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Startup, click Edit. This opens the file in Notepad ready for editing.
In Notepad, click File on the Menu bar, and then click Save As.
Right click in an empty area of the Save As dialog box, point to New in the context menu, and then click Folder.
Type a name for the new folder, for example temp, and then press the ENTER key to create the folder named temp.
Double-click the new folder named temp, and then click the Save button to save a backup copy of the Boot.ini file.

Edit the Boot.ini File

To view and edit the Boot.ini file:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-or-
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Startup, click Edit.

This is a sample of a default Boot.ini file from a Windows XP Professional computer.

Modifying the Boot.ini
While you can modify the Boot.ini file using the Startup and Recovery dialog, where you can select the default operating system, change the timeout value, or manually edit the file, the following method uses the command line utility, Bootcfg.exe.
Note: - The Bootcfg.exe utility is only available in Windows XP Professional. This utility is not available in Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. Therefore, this section does not apply to Windows XP Home Edition.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open text box, type cmd.
3. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /?.
4. The help and parameters for BOOTCFG.exe will display.

Adding an Operating System
At the command prompt, type:
bootcfg /copy /d Operating System Description /ID#
Where Operating System Description is a text description (e.g. Windows XP Home Edition), and where # specifies the boot entry ID in the operating systems section of the BOOT.INI file from which the copy has to be made.

Removing an Operating System
At the command prompt, type:
bootcfg /delete /ID#
Where # specifies the boot entry ID that you want to be deleted from the operating systems section of the BOOT.INI file (e.g. 2 for the second Operating system that is listed.

Setting the Default Operating System
At the command prompt, type:
bootcfg /default /ID#
Where # specifies the boot entry id in the operating systems section of the BOOT.INI file to be made the default operating system.

Setting the Time Out
At the command prompt, type:
bootcfg /timeout#
Where # specifies the time in seconds after which default operating system will be loaded.
Open the Boot.ini File to Verify Changes
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
3. Under System Startup, click Edit.

By this way you can easily Configure the Boot.ini File in Windows XP.

Batch file programming is nothing but the Windows version of Unix Shell
Programming. Let's start by understanding what happens when we give a
DOS command. DOS is basically a file called command.com
It is this file (command.com) which handles all DOS commands that you
give at the DOS prompt---such as COPY, DIR, DEL etc. These
commands are built in with the Command.com file. (Such commands which
are built in are called internal commands.).DOS has something called
external commands too such as FORMAT,
UNDELETE, BACKUP etc.
So whenever we give a DOS command either internal or external,
command.com either straightaway executes the command (Internal
Commands) or calls an external separate program which executes the
command for it and returns the result (External Commands.)

VIRUS Removal for Dummies

Virus means “Virtual Information Resources Under Seize”. A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user. This is a simple Script or Batch program that will run each time when the infected media is accessed. A virus can only spread from one computer to another when its host is taken to the uninfected computer, for instance by a user sending it over a network or the Internet, or by carrying it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, or USB drive. Viruses may takes the extension of *.exe,*.com,*.bat. A worm can spread itself to other computers without needing to be transferred as part of a host, and a Trojan horse is a file that appears harmless until executed.

Infections created by the Virus: - Normally whenever the virus is executed it modifies the Registry values of the system and changes the Policies defined for that particular user. The infections that generally viruses make are:-

Restrict access to the Registry Editing Tools.
Disable the Run Command from Start Menu.
Restrict access to MsConfig Tools.
Disable the Folder Option Menu.
Disable Task Manager.
Disable Command Prompt.
Disable the System Restore.

Effect of Virus on Personal/Professional Computers: - Some viruses are programmed to damage the computer by damaging programs, deleting files, or reformatting the hard disk. Others are not designed to do any damage, but simply replicate themselves and perhaps make their presence known by presenting text, video, or audio messages.

Virus restricts the access to Registry Editing, Run Command and MsConfig so there is no way left to remove virus except Formatting. Most Antivirus programs don’t work if they are not properly updated.
Windows XP provides the facility to kill the process using Task Manager when computer hangs but if this tool is disabled then restart is only option to solve Hang condition and any Professional may loose there unsaved Important Data.
If system crashes then System Restore is the tool to restore the Last Known Good Configuration but if this is disabled then there is no way to restore system settings.
They typically take up computer memory used by legitimate programs. As a result, they often cause erratic behavior and can result in system crashes and data loss.
Any Hidden data can not be shown if the Folder Option menu is disabled.

Tools to remove Virus Infection: -

Registry Editor (Regedit): -The Registry is a database used to store settings and options for the 32 bit versions of Microsoft. It contains information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of the PC. Whenever a user makes changes to a Control Panel settings, or File Associations, System Policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the Registry.

The Registry has a hierarchal structure; although it looks complicated the structure is similar to the directory structure on your hard disk, with Regedit being similar to Windows Explorer.

Each main branch (denoted by a folder icon in the Registry Editor, see left) is called a Hive, and Hives contains Keys. Each key can contain other keys (sometimes referred to as sub-keys), as well as Values. The values contain the actual information stored in the Registry. There are three types of values; String, Binary, and DWORD - the use of these depends Use this feature with care, as modifying the wrong key or value could cause major problems within the registry, so remember to always make a backup first.

There are several methods for starting the Registry Editor, the simplest is to click on the Start button, then select Run, and in the Open box type "regedit", or use “regedit.exe” from windows directory, it should now open and look like the image below.

Group Policy Editor (GPedit.msc): - The mechanism by which desktop settings are configured automatically, as defined by the administrator is handled by group policy editor. Type “gpedit.msc” in Run window or use “gpedit.msc” from “\windows\system32\” directory to open Group Policy Editor.

Removing Infections using these tools: -

Enable Registry Editing: -

If registry editing is disabled then navigate to following policy in group policy editor: -

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System

Change the policy Prevent access to registry editing tools and Disable it to Enable Registry Editing.

Enable MsConfig Tool: -

Use registry editor and then create new Text Document named “Restore.txt” and type the following: -

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore]

"DisableConfig"= -

Enable Folder Option: -

Append the following key to “Restore.txt”: -

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\

Explorer]

"NoFolderOptions"= -

Enable Task Manager and Run: -

Append the following key in same file: -

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

"DisableTaskMgr"= -

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\

Explorer]

"NoRun"= -

Enable System Restore and Command prompt: -

Append the following key: -

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore]

"DisableSR"= -

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System]

"DisableCMD"= -

Change the Extension from *.txt to *.reg and then Right Click on the file and click on Merge.

You can edit this file according to infection but “Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00” should be the first line to access the registry.

Examples of common viruses and their removal: -

“NewFolder.exe”, “MicrosoftPowerpoint.exe”, “d.com”, “niedect.com”, ”u.bat” are the common viruses. These entire viruses create the “Autorun.inf” file which is having the following data: -

[AutoRun]

open= “Virus_Name”

;shell\open=Open(&O)

shell\open\Command=”Virus_Name”

shell\open\Default=1

;shell\explore=Manager(&X)

shell\explore\Command=”Virus_Name”

Here the “shell\open\Default=1” shows that whatever method you use to open the Drive either “OPEN” or “EXPLORE” the virus will be executed. Both virus and autorun file is copied in each drive. This is the reason that if you format any one drive than your computer still infected by this virus.

You can see that the folders in Shared Documents have an exe extension If you have unchecked Hide extensions for known file types in Folder Options

Removal: - To remove the infection use the registry editing tool as mentioned above since these entire virus have the same symptoms as described.

Now uncheck the Hide Protected operating system files (Recommended) in Folder Options and search the files “ssvichosst.exe”, “scvhost.exe”, ”autorun.inf ”, “amvo.exe”, “MicrosoftPowerpoint.exe”, “d.com”, “niedect.com”, “u.bat”, “killer.exe”, “funny ust scandal.avi.exe”, “blastclnnn.exe”, “hinhem.scr” and delete these files if any file doesn’t delete than open the Task Manager and under Processes Tab search that file and End that Process now retry removing that file.

You Should Follow these Steps inorder to Remove the Virus:-

First open your any of the Drive from My Computer just by Double Clicking it.
If it Opens in a Seperate window than it means that your Computer may be infected from Virus.
Now type "x:\Autorun.inf" in the address-bar where "x" is your Drive letter.
If the Autorun File exists than it will be opened Now You can get the Name of the Virus by just checking [AutoRun]
open= “Virus_Name”
Now it's the Time to Remove Virus from the System, To do so you just have to KILL all the Processes which are Running under Your USERNAME using Windows Task Manager Except "explorer.exe" and "taskmgr.exe". You are doing this because you don't know by what Process the Virus is Running.
Now go to the Registry Key "Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" and Delete all the Key which have the entry in Registry under this section and whose path is "Windows\System32"...Means you have to Delete the Registry Entry of the Virus which is having a Copy in System32 Folder.
Repeat the Previous Step 6 again but now Replace "Hkey_Local_Machine" by "Hkey_Current_User".
Now Show all the Hidden Files including System Files using Folder Option. Don't Forget to uncheck the Hide Protected operating system files (Recommended) in Folder Options.
Now go to the StartUp Folder of the Current User and All Users and Delete any Hidden Link.
Now the Task Becomes Very Easy Just Search the Virus_Name using Windows Search utility (Include Hidden Files and Folder Also) and Delete All the Entries of Search Name.
Now go to Each and Every Drive and Delete the File "Autorun.inf".
Restart the Computer......Now your System is Free from That Virus.

*** If you can't Kill some Processes except "explorer.exe" and "taskmgr.exe" than note down that Process Name and use the Command Prompt like this...

Goto Run---Type "cmd"---Ok---type "tasklist"---Enter---Note Down the PID Values those Processes-----Now type "taskkill /PID [PID No.] /PID [PID No. if more than one Process can't be Killed] /F"---Enter.

By this way you can Easily Kill any of the Running Processes. ***

Now your Computer is free from these Viruses.
