We'd also like to thank the actors Rochelle Young, Mary Jo Apisa, Brant Jones, Amy Talbott (again), Louie Cowan, Clay Lowe, Theresa Nolan, Laura Dachenbach and John Newkirk. Here are the rest of the video previews of the show. Below is the official press release.

"Falsettos" returns to Columbus Sept. 15

Fans of last year's Merrily We Roll Along won't want to miss William Finn's heartfelt musical about "the families we make."

This landmark musical tells the story of Marvin, who’s left his wife and 12-year old son to live with his lover, Whizzer, next door to a couple of “spiky lesbians.” It’s a love story and a family story, beginning at the tail end of the sexual revolution and arriving at the dawn of “something so bad words have lost their meaning.”

Through his achingly articulate, Tony Award-winning songs, one enigmatic man shares his personal vision of three exhilarating and heartbreaking years in the gay life of America.

WHERE: Riffe Center Studio One Theater, 77 South High Street, 4th Floor

WHEN: September 15 - October 1

I'm on vacation.

In about a half an hour I will be going down the middle Yough River in Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania. I will be thinking of you all today as you go through several new and developing scripts. I want to see lots of pictures!

As many of you know I have stepped away from leading the meetings of the group. I have had to focus on remodeling my family's house, looking for a job, (a-hem, possibly moving...), and I guess I am supposed to be getting some of my own writing finished too.

I still plan on participating in meetings and hopefully leading a few. My goal all along with the DF was to create a community independent and self-sufficient for itself. I think my frustration with my perceived lack of initiative with some people got the best of me (or maybe inspired me to do with what needed to be done.) That is, I had to say, " I'm stepping back from this group and if y'all want it to continue then you'll have to make it happen." (Did you notice my use of the word, "y'all"? That's what happens when you spend too much time in Kentucky and West Virginia.)

Rick Hole and Therese Nolan have been so kind to help continue these meetings and I am really excited to know Rick, Dr. Alan Woods ( he finally got to a meeting - yay!), Laura and Jay (and actually regretful that I won't be there to witness this great line up). I hope it goes well today and I will be thinking of you all while I am floating down the Yough with my son.

P.S. Save a donut for me.

This was a unique meeting where we had a puppet show and an animated script. Both were a first. We also had a large contingent of fine actors this meeting that deserve nothing less than our boundless gratitude. They are (in no particular order) Grant Jones, Amy Talbott, Louie Cowan, Anna Lee, Leslie Robinson, Dan Welsh, Emily Bach, Scott Summit, Jon Calig, Dan O'Reilly, and Yury Khidekel. I would like to particularly thank for this meeting Louie Cowan for his tireless efforts in casting these scripts and Dan O'Reilly for reading an awful lot of stage directions effortless. Until our next meeting... write like the rebirth into your next life depends on it.

One of Our Own: Hits It Out of the Park

A little late in getting this posted... These are both near the entrance to the Park of Roses. Classroom A is located at the Southwest corner of the building on the second floor.

If you park in the parking lot in the rear of the building and enter from the back door, you will walk down a hallway. You will come to the main desk. If you turn right and go down the South hallway, there is a stairway at the end of the hallway. Going up this stairwell will lead to the second floor. The first classroom on your left as you enter the second floor hallway is Classroom A.

For those of you who prefer using an elevator versus the stairs there is one located on the first floor to your left past the front desk and common area.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting. The room and location is great. We want to thank the Whetstone Community Center for letting us use their facility.

RESCHEDULED WITH A NEW TIME AND LOCATION: The Drama Foundry Writers' Group Meeting

When: Saturday April 30, 2011 1:45pm to 4:45pm

Also, if you are interested in discussing the future of the The Drama Foundry then you may want to attend this reading. We will spend some time during this meeting having a conversation about this topic.

The Drama Foundry Writers' Group Meeting Announcement

When: Saturday April 23, 2011
Tickets cost $12, $8 Students/Seniors, $6 Members. Call 614-221-5418 or visit http://www.madlab.net/

With their 12th annual Theatre Roulette, MadLab, now settled into their new space, returned to their usual method of operation for Roulette. They received 566 submissions and from that group of scripts, 10 were selected. 1 was written by a MadLab ensemble member (Jennifer Feather Youngblood), another by their former artistic director Chris Lane, 3 more by playwrights who have had plays performed at Roulette in the past (Christopher Lockheardt, Donald Dewey, and Mark Harvey Levine) with the remaining 5 from playwrights who had no previous Roulette experience.

Auditions were held in January. 22 actors were cast in 30 roles. Four of them will make their MadLab debuts (Mony Carpenter, Vince Reese, Hilary Shelton, and Damian Synadinos). This will be David Tull’s Roulette debut. 13 of MadLab’s 25 ensemble members accepted roles with many accepting multiple parts.

The Columbus Foundation, GCAC, Scion, and OAC support MadLab throughout the year.

Following each playwright name is the city they live in and previous Roulette appearances.

As always, the Roulette shows are split into 3 nights, shown in a rotating basis, until the final day when all 10 shows are presented. The names for the nights this year are Queen of Hearts, One-Eyed Jacks, and Suicide Kings.
At the beginning of every meeting I read the meeting guidelines. The fifth guideline states:

Don't be prescriptive.

"What does that mean?" That means we ask that people who participate in the feedback sessions give the writer's the dignity of discovering for themselves the story they are trying to write. The way to do this is by not prescribing to the writer what we think as a participant they need to do to improve their script.

"Um... wait a second. This is a feedback session. Aren't we supposed to be telling the writer what we think of their work?" You are very curious today Mr. anonymous, make-believe, inquisitor but I'm glad you asked... The answer is, "sort of." The way I have set up meetings to be run is to ask the group questions to help the writer and explore their work. The reasons for this approach are multiple.

People don't like to be judged; especially when trying to be creative. It's a basic fear - right up there with being devoured by a mountain lion. That dynamic pisses all over the creative process.

When someone is bringing a new piece to share, it's like they are bringing a new born child to introduce to the world. When a scenario arises where you have one person in a submissive role of taking direction from another, the situation shuts down the participants intuitive mind. People become guarded. Everyone enters the realm of the critical left-brain and people's egos take over. My goal is to make sure that feedback sessions do not become a place for folks to jockey for displays of competency or to show everyone that they have read more books then everyone else in the room.

A technique that William Ball author of, A Sense of Direction, and founder of the American Conservatory of Theatre used with actors is to put feedback in the form of questions. In tailoring feedback sessions with Drama Foundry participants in a similar way, we are working to get folks to trust their intuition. By learning what questions to ask the writers and actors in the group will inherently learn to trust their intuition and come up with the right answers to fuel their own creative processes.

For me, another aspect to framing feedback in a non-prescriptive way is that I know that I am very guilty at times of wanting someone to tell me how to do my art. I'm scared I'm not going to do it perfectly. When I get like this I am not having to take responsibility for the choices I make and that usually also means I am not mindful of why I made the choices I made in the first place. When I get in that space, then I'm not owning my writing. In order to be successful in life people have to own their territory. That's true whether someone is constructing a narrative or they are an actor making decisions in how to interpret a character. In feedback sessions where their is a dynamic of participants being prescriptive it will foster a dynamic where the writers and actors will be looking over their shoulder to see whether or not they are doing their art "right". When caught between the book ends of right and wrong nothing is ever finished creatively. We have to give ourselves permission to do things messy so we can get something finished.

Why is this so important? The experience a writer has at one of our meetings after bringing a piece to share may determine if they continue working on the piece. Or worse, their experience may determine if they continue writing. My hope is that who ever runs a meeting, whether it is myself or someone else, that they understand that they are there to protect the dynamic of the group and the creative process of the writers and the actors. This is not a responsibility to be taken lightly nor is it one that can afford to be tarnished by self-serving intentions.

The Drama Foundry Writers' Group Meeting Announcement

When: Saturday March, 26, 2011 From 1:45pm to 4:45pm
It is this saturday, February 19, 2011 7:30pm at the Ballet Met performance space. People keep telling me I have been going through a rough time... I have though for some reason it is hard to admit and ask for help. My mom died January 12. She had come home for hospice and died 4 days later. My dad has also been very ill and between my parents illnesses and all the shenanigans from their insurance company (Humana...), writing has been something I have not had a lot of time or energy to put toward lately.

I have had a song written about me. I have had poems written about me. I even have had characters created in plays and books after me. However, I have never had a benefit for me and frankly even though I need the help and am very grateful that so many people care enough to do this, it still feels weird. I guess I am not used to all the sympathy and this will be an opportunity for me to receive instead of give. Here is Michael Grossberg's blog post on the event.

Meetings... We were supposed to have a meeting this month and we errr... wanted to have a meeting this month but from my understanding between trying to get people involved in getting the meeting off the ground and recruiting the writers and the fact we have the benefit going on the same day, Rick and I decided to cancel and try for the early part of March.

On a side note, I am looking to change the structure of the group and open it up a bit so I am not carrying so much of the water in getting the meetings together. There seems to be enough interest to do so, we'll see what happens. I have gotten a lot out of running this group and have learned a great deal. My hope is that the group can continue and so others can get the same benefit that I have had.

Finally, I want to thank some people. Firstly, Rick Hole, Theresa Nolan, BalletMet and the cast for the reading Ben Gorman as Jerry, Jim Azelvandre as Sarge, Rich Stadler as Don and Kim Garrison, Hopcraft as Flo, with stage directions by Amity Cauthorn. Thank you very much for doing this. You're kindness is humbling.

I'd also like to thank some other folks for their support over the last 2 years: John Dranschak, Adam Brouillette, Ruby Classen, Roland Tech, Chris Shaw Swanson, Meagan Burkeholder, Louie Cowan, and Matt Keida. For anyone else I forgot - Thank you too. There is more yet to be revealed... ;o)
