কক্সবাজার শহরের গোলদীঘির পাড় এলাকার একটি বাসা থেকে পুলিশ বুধবার সন্ধ্যায় স্বামী-স্ত্রী ও তাঁদের দুই শিশুকন্যার লাশ উদ্ধার করেছে বলে জানা যায়। এর মধ্যে স্বামীর লাশ গলায় ফাঁস লাগানো ছিল বলে জানিয়েছে সদর থানার ওসি রণজিত কুমার বড়ুয়া।

নিহতরা হলেন ওই এলাকার সুমন চৌধুরী (৩৩), তার স্ত্রী বেবী চৌধুরী (২৮) এবং তাদের মেয়ে অবন্তিকা চৌধুরী (৫) ও জ্যোতিকা চৌধুরী (৩)।

এদের মধ্যে সুমনের লাশ ফ্যানের সঙ্গে ঝুলন্ত অবস্থায় এবং তার স্ত্রী ও দুই মেয়ের লাশ খাটে শোয়া অবস্থায় ছিল বলে জানিয়েছে পুলিশ।

ঘটনাস্থলে গিয়ে দেখা যায়, ওই বাসায় পৃথকভাবে বসবাস করেন সুমন চৌধুরীসহ তাঁর অপর চার ভাই। সুমনের বড়ভাই আমীর চৌধুরী (৪৫) বলেন, প্রতিদিনের মতো বুধবার বেলা দুইটার দিকে সুমন (৩৩), তাঁর স্ত্রী বেবী চৌধুরী (২৮), মেয়ে অবন্তিকা চৌধুরী (৫) ও জ্যোতি চৌধুরী (৩) দুপুরের খাবার খেয়ে ঘুমোতে যায়। কিন্তু বিকেল পাঁচটার পরও তাঁরা ঘুম থেকে না ওঠায় তাঁদের দরজায় টোকা দেন তিনি। এরপরও সাড়াশব্দ না পেয়ে তিনি স্থানীয় পৌর কাউন্সিলর রাজ বিহারী দাশকে খবর দেন। সন্ধ্যায় রাজ বিহারী ঘটনাস্থলে পৌঁছে দেখেন দরজা-জানালা বন্ধ। ভেতরে কারও সাড়াশব্দ নেই। এরপর তিনি পুলিশকে খবর দেন। সন্ধ্যা সোয়া সাতটার দিকে কক্সবাজার সদর মডেল থানার ওসি রণজিৎ কুমার বড়ুয়া ঘটনাস্থলে গিয়ে দরজা ভেঙে চারজনের মৃতদেহ উদ্ধার করেন।

The part of aging that people don't talk about — and 5 ways to deal with it

For years before her death at age 96, Nancy Lundebjerg’s mother underwent a long, slow decline.

Arthritis made it hard for Margaret Lundebjerg to get around. After two hip surgeries, she needed a walker when she was out and about.

Incontinence was a source of discomfort, as was the need to rely on aides to help her perform daily chores.

Little by little, Margaret became frail and isolated. “There was a sadness to seeing my mother’s circle of life become diminished,” said Nancy Lundebjerg, 58, CEO of the American Geriatrics Society, who wrote about her experiences in the organization’s journal.

The anguish accompanying aging isn’t openly discussed very often, nor is its companion: grief. Instead, these emotions are typically acknowledged only after a loved one’s death, when formal rituals recognizing a person’s passing —the wake, the funeral, the shiva — begin.

But frailty and serious illness can involve significant losses over an extended period of time, giving rise to sadness and grief for years.

The loss of independence may be marked by the need to use a walker or a wheelchair. The loss of a cherished role may dishearten an older woman who is no longer able to cook dinner for her extended family, gathered at the holidays. The loss of shared memories may be painful for adult children when their older father is diagnosed with dementia. And these are but a few examples.

Looming over everything is the loss of the future that an older adult and his or her family imagined they might have, often accompanied by anxiety and dread.

This pileup of complex emotions is known as “anticipatory loss.”

“The deterioration of function, disability and suffering have their own grieving processes, but helping families deal with that isn’t built into the health care system,” said Dr. John Rolland, professor of psychiatry at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and author of “Families, Illness and Disability: An Integrative Treatment Model.”

Rolland and several other experts offered advice on how to deal with difficult emotions that can arise with frailty or serious illness:
Acknowledge your feelings

“Grief starts the moment someone with a serious illness receives the diagnosis,” said Tammy Brannen-Smith, director of grief and loss services at Pathways, a hospice in Fort Collins, Colo. But it doesn’t stop there. Each time a capacity is lost — for instance, an older adult’s ability to negotiate stairs, to drive or to manage household finances — sadness and grief can arise afresh. Brannen-Smith encourages people to acknowledge their feelings and try to “normalize them, because people don’t understand that everyone goes through this.”
Talk openly

When families avoid talking about an aging parent’s frailty or serious illness, the person with the condition can become isolated and family relationships can become strained.

“My view is, you’re better off trying to get through whatever you’re facing together,” Rolland said.

When Rolland works with couples who are dealing with multiple sclerosis, for instance, he asks them to make a list of things they’d like to discuss but don’t. “Usually, there’s about a 75 percent overlap, and it’s a tremendous relief to most people to find out they don’t have to keep things locked up inside,” he said.

“People who are facing serious illness think about what might lie ahead all the time,” Rolland said. “For a family member not to bring this up, for everyone to be off in their own grieving pockets, alone, isn’t helpful.”
Communicate sensitively

Abigail Levinson Marks, a clinical psychologist in San Francisco, regularly works with adults who have brain tumors, which can alter their thinking and wipe out their memories, as dementia does for millions of older adults.

“People with these conditions aren’t the same as they were before, but it would be heartbreaking for them to know that you didn’t see them as the same person,” she said. “So, the truth becomes something that cannot be named and that everybody avoids, for fear of shaming the person.”

In her practice, Marks asks “people to share what each person is going through and not worry about protecting each other from what they’re feeling,” she explained. “Because protecting each other leads to feeling more alone and magnifies the feelings of loss.”

For a caregiver of someone with dementia, that might mean saying,“Sometimes you might see a look crossing my face and think that I’m disappointed. It’s not that I’m upset with you. It’s that I’m sad that there are things that happened in our past that we don’t remember together.”

For someone who has suffered a stroke, it might mean encouraging them to open up about how hard it is to lose a measure of independence and be seen as someone who’s disabled.

How people respond to sadness and grief varies, depending on their personality, past experiences, the relationship they have with the person who’s frail or ill, and the nature of that person’s condition.

“Sadness can make you cherish a person even more and appreciate small moments of connection,” said Barry Jacobs, a Pennsylvania psychologist and co-author of “AARP Meditations for Caregivers.”

Some people, however, can’t tolerate feeling this distress and end up distancing themselves from someone whose health is declining. Others might show up in person but focus on tasks instead of allowing themselves to connect emotionally.

If possible, lean in rather than letting yourself become distant. “Cherish the time that you have together,” Jacobs said. “Rather than pulling back, move toward the person and be as engaged with them as possible, particularly on an emotional level.” In the end, connection eases the pain of grief, and you’ll be glad you had this time with the person.
Seek support

“Don’t confront grief alone or in isolation,” said Alan Wolfelt, founder and director of the Center for Loss & Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colo. “Have people around you who are supportive and who will be present for you” — family members, friends, people from a support group, whoever is willing to be a companion through your journey through serious illness.

Ultimately, this journey will help shape how you ultimately experience a loved one’s death.

Wolfelt describes mourning his mother twice. “The day she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and all the days I watched her dwindle. And then, the day she died, I had to begin mourning again, at a whole other level.”

But Lundebjerg of the American Geriatrics Society found a measure of peace when her mother finally passed away, after two seizures and the family’s decision not to pursue further treatment. “It was OK that she died because she was ready — she had made that very clear. And I had come to peace, over a very long time, with the fact that this was going to be coming.”

WASHINGTON – President Trump said during a Camp David news conference Saturday that he “absolutely” would hold phone talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, appearing to contradict some of his top administration officials.

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster is among those who’ve said there must be preconditions for high-level talks with North Korea, which is racing to develop a nuclear weapons arsenal.

“Sure, I always believe in talking,” Trump said in response to a question about whether he’d speak with Kim. “Absolutely, I would do that,” he said, stressing he would also “be very firm.”

“He knows I’m not messing around,” Trump said. “If something can come out of those talks that would be a great thing for all of humanity.”

Kim and Trump have engaged in an unprecedented war of words for months. Trump has referred to Kim as "little rocket man," "short and fat" and a "madman," and threatened to wipe Kim and his country off the face of the earth if they attack the United States or its allies. Kim has responded in kind, calling Trump a "mentally deranged dotard (senile person)," saying he deserved the death penalty, and vowing to annihilate the U.S. if it attacks North Korea.

In a spontaneous news conference during a retreat in the Maryland mountains with GOP congressional leaders, Trump also said he will not compromise on building a wall along the Mexican border. He took additional shots at Michael Wolff, author of “Fire and Fury,” the explosive new book chronicling life inside the Trump White House, and defended his mental state.

“I went to the best colleges for college,” said Trump, responding to claims in the book that he is intellectually challenged. “I was a very excellent student, came out and made billions and billions of dollars,” he said.

Trump insisted he's never met Wolff, the author, who says he spent three hours interviewing Trump during the 2016 campaign and in the White House. Wolff previously was a columnist for USA TODAY.

Trump also underscored that he will not allow a deal to prevent undocumented immigrants who came here as children from being deported unless Congress approves funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.

"The wall's gonna happen, or we're not gonna have DACA," said Trump.

Finally, Trump also criticized the probe of his campaign’s ties to Russia by special prosecutor Robert Mueller, repeatedly saying there’s been no collusion.

“Everything I’ve done is 100% proper. That’s what I do is I do things proper. Collusion now is dead. Because everyone found out after a year of study there has been absolutely no collusion. ... Now there has been collusion between Hillary Clinton, the DNC and the Russians," Trump said.

সাইবার নিরাপত্তাপ্রতিষ্ঠান সিমানটেকের গবেষকেরা ওই ম্যালওয়্যারটির খোঁজ পেয়েছেন। তাঁদের ভাষ্য, ওই ম্যালওয়্যারটির উবার অ্যাপের ছদ্মবেশে থাকে। অ্যাপটিতে ঢুকতে পাসওয়ার্ড ও আইডি দিতে বলা হয়। তথ্য দেওয়া হলে ম্যালওয়্যারটি এর নিয়ন্ত্রণকর্তার সার্ভারে তথ্য পাঠায়। এসব তথ্য স্ক্যামসহ অর্থ উপায়ের নানা কাজে লাগায় সাইবার দুর্বৃত্তরা। এ ছাড়াও ডার্ক ওয়েবে এসব তথ্য বিক্রি করা হয়।

সিমানটেকের গবেষকেরা বলছেন, ভুয়া এসব অ্যাপ এত সূক্ষ্মভাবে তথ্য চুরি করে যে ব্যবহারকারীর মনে সন্দেহ তৈরি হয় না।

সিমানটেকের গবেষকেরা বলছেন, গুগল প্লেস্টোরের বাইরের কোনো উৎস থেকে অ্যাপ ডাউনলোড করা হলে ভুয়া অ্যাপ ডাউনলোডের আশঙ্কা থাকে। উবার ব্যবহারকারীদের জন্য পরামর্শ হিসেবে প্লেস্টোরের বাইরের কোনো উৎস থেকে অ্যাপ ডাউনলোড করার বিষয়ে সতর্ক করা হয়েছে।

উবারের একজন মুখপাত্র প্রযুক্তিবিষয়ক ওয়েবসাইট জেডডিনেটকে বলেছেন, ফিশিং পদ্ধতিতে ব্যবহারকারীকে প্রলুব্ধ করা হয় আগে। ক্ষতিকর অ্যাপটি প্লেস্টোরের বাইরে থেকে ডাউনলোড করতে বলে। নিশ্চিত উৎস থেকে অ্যাপ ডাউনলোড করতে হবে। এখান থেকে অ্যাপ ডাউনলোড করলে ক্ষতির আশঙ্কা নেই। ব্যবহারকারীদের নিরাপদ রাখতে চেষ্টা করা হয়।

US authorities have arrested an Indian man after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her as she slept in the seat next to him on a US flight.

Prabhu Ramamoorthy, 34, was sitting between his own wife and the alleged victim, officials say.

The woman said she had woken up to find her shirt and trousers unbuttoned and the suspect's hand in her trousers.

Mr Ramamoorthy denied the accusations, telling police he was himself asleep after taking a pill.

Mr Ramamoorthy, an Indian citizen living in the US on a temporary visa, was sitting in the middle seat, with his wife on the aisle side and the alleged victim in the window seat.

The flight was on Spirit Airlines, travelling overnight and arriving in Detroit on Wednesday morning from Las Vegas.

Mr Ramamoorthy was held without bail after appearing in a federal court in Michigan on Thursday after prosecutors argued there was a risk he could abscond.

Prosecutors told the Washington Post that he had been charged with aggravated sexual abuse.

North Korea accepts Olympics talks offer, says South. North Korea has accepted an offer to attend high-level talks next week, South Korean officials have said.

The meeting, on 9 January, will focus on finding a way for North Korean athletes to attend the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea in February. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said this week that sending a delegation to the Games would be "a good opportunity to show unity" among North Koreans.

The meeting is expected to be held at Panmunjom, on the border. The so-called peace village, in the heavily guarded demilitarised zone (DMZ), is where the two sides have historically held talks.

According to an official from South Korea's presidential office, the meeting's priority will be the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

However, he told South Korea's Yonhap news agency that he believed there would also "be discussions related to improving South-North ties after the North's participation in the Olympics becomes final".

These will be the first high-level talks the both Koreas have had since December 2015. It is not yet clear who will be attending.

বউভাতে গিয়ে চমৎকৃত হয়েছেন অতিথিরা। সাধারণত বিয়ের পর বউভাতের আয়োজনে নবদম্পতিকে বিভিন্ন উপহার দেন আমন্ত্রিত অতিথিরা। পাশাপাশি নবদম্পতির তরফ থেকে ফিরতি উপহারের চলও আছে। সিলেটের দক্ষিণ সুরমার এক নবদম্পতি অতিথিদের ফিরতি উপহার হিসেবে গাছের চারা দিয়েছেন।

বর-কনের পরিবারের সদস্যদের সঙ্গে কথা বলে জানা গেছে, গত শনিবার সিলেট নগরের কুয়ারপাড় এলাকার বাসিন্দা শারমিন ফেরদৌসির সঙ্গে বিয়ে হয় দক্ষিণ সুরমা এলাকার কাদিপুরের বাসিন্দা মাসুদুর রহমান শাওনের। তিনি বর্তমানে ঢাকার একটি বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠানে চাকরি করেন। গত রোববার বউভাতের আয়োজনে অন্যান্য অতিথির পাশপাশি সিলেটের পরিবেশবাদী সংগঠন ‘ভূমিসন্তান বাংলাদেশ’-এর কর্মীদেরও দাওয়াত দেন তাঁরা। এতে ওই সংগঠনের কর্মীরা বর-কনেকে ফলদ, বনজ ও ঔষধি ৫০০ গাছের চারা উপহার দেন। পরে ওই পরিবেশবাদী সংগঠনের কর্মীদের সম্মতিতেই বিয়ের আয়োজনে আসা অতিথিদের গাছগুলো ফিরতি উপহার হিসেবে তুলে দেন বর-কনে।

গত রোববার রাত সাড়ে আটটায় দক্ষিণ সুরমার ময়ূরকুঞ্জ কমিউনিটি সেন্টারে বউভাতে আসা অতিথিরা খাওয়া শেষে একে একে নিজ গন্তব্যে রওনা হয়েছেন। এ সময় নবদম্পতি অতিথিদের হাতে গাছের চারা উপহার হিসেবে তুলে দেন। কমিউনিটি সেন্টারের ভেতরে প্রবেশ করে দেখা গেল, ১৫-২০ জন মানুষ গোল হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। তাঁরা দাঁড়িয়ে থেকে পছন্দের গাছের চারা বেছে নিচ্ছিলেন। এ সময় বর মাসুদুর রহমানকে অতিথিদের সঙ্গে গাছ নিয়েই কথা বলতে দেখা গেল।

বউভাতে আসা ঢাকার মিরপুরের বাসিন্দা প্রকৌশলী কাজী মনোয়ার উদ্দিন আহমদ বলেন, ‘এমন উপহার পেয়ে আমি খুশি। জীবনে অনেক উপহার পেয়েছি, কিন্তু আজকের উপহারটি সব থেকে আলাদা।’ মানুষ নিজেদের ব্যবহারের জন্য বৃক্ষ নিধন করছে জানিয়ে তিনি বলেন, ‘শহরে এখন গাছ নেই। মানুষ নিজেরা নিজেদের বিপদ ডেকে আনছে। তাই বিয়েসহ বিভিন্ন আয়োজনে অন্য উপহারের বদলে গাছের চারা উপহার দেওয়ার রীতি চালু করলে প্রকৃতি ও মানুষ উপকৃত হবে।’

বউভাতে আসা সিলেটের ওসমানীনগরের বাসিন্দা মকবুল হোসেন জানান, বউভাতে ফিরতি উপহার হিসেবে খেজুর ও মালটাগাছের চারা পেয়েছেন তিনি। উপহার হিসেবে গাছ পেয়ে কেমন লাগছে জানতে চাইলে তিনি বলেন, ‘দাওয়াত খেয়ে বাড়ি ফেরার পর নবদম্পতিকে ভুলে যাবেন অনেকে। কিন্তু আমি গাছগুলো দেখে তাদের কথা মনে রাখব।’ গাছে প্রথম ফল এলে আজকের নবদম্পতিকে উপহার পাঠাবেন বলেও জানান তিনি।

বউভাতে আসা বড়দের পাশপাশি ছোটদেরও গাছের চারা নিতে ব্যস্ত হতে দেখা গেছে। দক্ষিণ সুরমার জালালপুরের চতুর্থ শ্রেণির ছাত্র আসিফ বাবা-মায়ের সঙ্গে বিয়ের আমন্ত্রণে এসেছিল। একটি অর্জুনগাছ ও কাঁঠালগাছের চারা হাতে পেয়ে সে জানাল, গাছগুলো সে স্কুলের খালি অংশে লাগাবে।

সিলেটের পরিবেশবাদী সংগঠন ‘ভূমিসন্তান বাংলাদেশ’-এর সমন্বয়ক মেহেদী হাসান জনি বললেন, সিলেটের দক্ষিণ সুরমার কাদিপুরের বাসিন্দা মাসুদুর রহমানের সঙ্গে বিভিন্ন সাংগঠনিক কার্যক্রমে পরিচিত। সে সুবাদে বউভাতে তাঁদের সংগঠনের কর্মীদের দাওয়াত দেন তিনি। সংগঠনের পক্ষ থেকে নবদম্পতিকে বিয়ের উপহার হিসেবে তাঁরা ৫০০ গাছের চারা উপহার দেন।

চট্টগ্রামের চান্দগাঁও থানার বাহির সিগন্যাল এলাকায় একটি জুতা কারখানায় অগ্নিকাণ্ড হয়েছে।

আগুনে কারও হতাহত হওয়ার খবর পাওয়া যায়নি।

মঙ্গলবার ভোররাত সোয়া ৩টার দিকে আগুনের সূত্রপাত হয় বলে জানান ফায়ার সার্ভিসের কালুরঘাট স্টেশনের সিনিয়র স্টেশন অফিসার অতীশ চাকমা।

বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে তিনি বলেন, কারখানার চারতলা ভবনের নিচতলায় আগুন লাগে। খবর পেয়ে ফায়ার সার্ভিসের কর্মীরা দুটি গাড়ি নিয়ে প্রায় এক ঘণ্টার চেষ্টায় আগুন নিয়ন্ত্রণে আনে।

কারখানা ভবনের নিচতলায় বিভিন্ন কাঁচামাল রাখা ছিল জানিয়ে অগ্নিনির্বাপক কর্মকর্তা অতীশ বলেন, “আগুনে কিছু যন্ত্রপাতি ও কাঁচামাল পুড়ে গেছে।”

Time's Up: Women launch campaign to fight sexual harassment

Oscar winners Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, and Cate Blanchett are among the supporters

More than 300 actresses, writers, and directors have launched a project to help fight sexual harassment in the film industry and other workplaces.

The initiative, which is called Time's Up, was announced via a full-page advert printed in the New York Times.

The Hollywood project is described as a "unified call for change from women in entertainment for women everywhere".

It comes in the wake of sexual abuse allegations by high-profile actresses against film producer Harvey Weinstein.
Legal funding

In a "solidarity letter" published on its website, Time's Up says the "struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard" must end, adding: "Time's up on this impenetrable monopoly."

The letter, which is aimed at "every woman... who has had to fend off sexual advances", goes on to say that such harassment can often continue because "perpetrators and employers never face any consequences"

The campaign, which is backed by hundreds of actresses including Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Eva Longoria and Emma Stone, has already raised more than $13m (£9.6m) of its $15m target.

The money raised will be used to fund legal support for both female and male victims of sexual harassment at work.

The project is aimed primarily at those who are unable to meet the payments to defend themselves, such as agricultural or factory workers, caretakers and waitresses.

It also calls for "gender inequality and the imbalance of power" to be addressed, stressing the need for more women to gain positions of authority and parity of pay.

In December, Time magazine named "the Silence Breakers" - women and men who spoke out against sexual abuse and harassment - as its "Person of the Year" for 2017.

Last year also saw the rise of the #MeToo hashtag, which inspired a global movement of women and men to share their stories of sexual abuse and harassment.

The term gained momentum after actress Alyssa Milano took to Twitter to ask victims of sexual assault to come forward in a show of solidarity.

Between October and December 2017, the hashtag was used on Twitter and Facebook more than six million times.

LOS ANGELES — In the grand tradition of past Apple fiascos like Antennagate (dropped calls on the then-new iPhone 4) and the launch of Apple Maps (directions that weren't accurate), the tech giant apologized again to consumers this week.

The question is whether the iconic iPhone maker's apology went far enough. We don't think that it did.

First, Apple was forced to admit that it intentionally slowed down the performance of older phones in order to keep up with declining battery life. It acted after a 17-year-old user performed a test that proved it.

Critics howled, the Twitterverse pounced and several consumer lawsuits were churned out by hungry lawyers. One asked for a $5 million in compensation on behalf of all the consumers who felt forced to upgrade their otherwise healthy older phones after they were slowed down by Apple's software update. They were not given the choice to opt-in for the battery-saving slowdown feature.

Analysts had suggested Apple pen an open letter to consumers. While the world awaited a beefier response from Apple than its initial admission, we tried to do some of the work for them. We wrote the letter that we hoped Apple would write, and posted it. A few hours later on Thursday, Apple came clean and released its own take.

One major difference between our proposed apology and Apple's: We suggested Apple say they were sorry and offer free battery upgrades for any consumer who wanted one. Apple saw it differently. It offered an apology but not a free battery. Instead, it is offering a new (normally priced $79.99) battery at a discount: $29.99, $50 less than the usual cost. The deal is available starting in late January and running through the end of 2018 and only on iPhone 6 and 6S.

Remember, this is the world's most profitable company, a firm that paid CEO Tim Cook $102 million in salary and bonuses in 2017. Apple generated $10 billion in profit for just the most recent quarter.

Yet it refuses to give away free batteries to inconvenienced Apple customers who have been suffering from slow downs of their phones that they bought from Apple in good faith.

Analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights says Apple's replacement battery costs less than $10. He estimates that only around 100,000 consumers will take up Apple on its offer. Even if the battery replacement was free, he says some 250,000 people would participate, the result of which would be "barely a blip to Apple's earnings."

A free battery would go a long way towards erasing widespread suspicion that Apple purposely tries to make its older products obsolete in order to coax consumers into buying new ones.

Apple denied this in the open letter.

"We have never — and would never — do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades," the company said.

But rivals Samsung, LG, Motorola and HTC all say they don't slow down their phones to factor in older batteries.

"Apple’s offer of discounted batteries fails to compensate consumers who were forced to purchase new iPhones," said James Vlahakis, a Chicago-area lawyer who filed the $5 million class-action lawsuits. The $50 discount on the price of a new battery "is an insult to loyal customers who have consistently and with much fanfare have flocked to Apple stores worldwide to purchase every version of the iPhone."

Still, Moorhead believes this latest fiasco will blow over for Apple and fans will continue to wait on line breathlessly when the next generation of iPhones are announced and come to stores, typically in September. I tend to agree, but it will be harder to take Apple's statements at face value again.

১। গুলশান, বনানী ও বারিধারায় প্রবেশের সব রাস্তা রাত আটটা থেকে বন্ধ রাখা হবে। তবে এ এলাকায় বসবাসকারীদের প্রবেশের জন্য কামাল আতাতুর্ক অ্যাভিনিউ (কাকলী ক্রসিং) ও আমতলী ক্রসিং (মহাখালী) খোলা রাখা হবে। সে ক্ষেত্রে গুলশান, বনানী ও বারিধারায় বসবাসরত ব্যক্তিদের রাত আটটার মধ্যে ওই এলাকায় প্রবেশের অনুরোধ করা হয়েছে।

২। রাত আটটা থেকে গুলশান, বনানী ও বারিধারা এলাকায় প্রবেশের ক্ষেত্রে তেজগাঁও শিল্পাঞ্চল এলাকা-ফিনিক্স রোড ক্রসিং, বনানী ১১ নম্বর রোড ক্রসিং, চেয়ারম্যান বাড়ি ক্রসিং, শুটিং ক্লাব, বাড্ডা লিংক রোড, ডিওএইচএস বারিধারা-ইউনাইটেড হাসপাতাল ক্রসিং ও নতুন বাজার ক্রসিং এলাকাগুলো ব্যবহার করা যাবে না। তবে এ এলাকা থেকে বের হওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে এসব ক্রসিং ব্যবহার করা যাবে।

বাংলাদেশে সিরিজ বোমা হামলায় মৃত্যুদণ্ডপ্রাপ্ত ও কলকাতার মোস্ট ওয়ান্টেড আসামি জঙ্গি নেতা শ্যামল শেখকে (৩৩) অস্ত্রসহ গ্রেপ্তার করেছে বগুড়া পুলিশ। মোস্ট ওয়ান্টেড আসামি হিসেবে তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে কলকাতার এনআইএ (ন্যাশনাল ইনভেস্টিগেশন এজেন্সি) ১০ লাখ রুপি পুরস্কার ঘোষণা করেছে। ২০১৫ সালে ১৭ আগস্ট বাংলাদেশে সিরিজ বোমা হামলায় আদালত তাঁকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দেন।

শনিবার দুপুরে বগুড়ার পুলিশ সুপার মো. আসাদুজ্জামান তাঁর কার্যালয়ে আয়োজিত সংবাদ সম্মেলনে নব্য জেএমবি নেতা শ্যামল শেখ ওরফে আবু সাঈদকে গ্রেপ্তারের বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেন।

পুলিশ সূত্রে জানা গেছে, জেএমবির ওই নেতার পরিচয় পশ্চিমবঙ্গ পুলিশের নথিতে শ্যামল শেখ হিসেবে লেখা রয়েছে। তিনি আবু সাঈদ ওরফে আবদুল করিম ওরফে তৈয়ব ওরফে তালহা শেখ ওরফে হোসাইন ওরফে সাজিদ ওরফে ডেঞ্জার সাকিল ওরফে মোকলেছ ওরফে শফিককে নামেও পরিচিত।

শুক্রবার রাত একটার দিকে বগুড়ার নন্দীগ্রাম উপজেলার ওমরপুরহাট এলাকায় বগুড়া-নাটোর মহাসড়ক থেকে তাঁকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। রাজশাহী থেকে মোটরসাইকেলে বগুড়ায় আসার পথে পুলিশ সদর দপ্তরের গোয়েন্দা শাখা ও বগুড়া পুলিশের যৌথ অভিযান চালিয়ে তাঁকে গ্রেপ্তার করে। কলকাতা থেকে পালিয়ে আসার দুই বছরের মাথায় গ্রেপ্তার হলেন তিনি। গ্রেপ্তারের সময় তাঁর কাছ থেকে একটি বিদেশি নাইন এমএম পিস্তল, ম্যাগাজিন, গুলি, বার্মিজ চাকু ও নম্বরবিহীন মোটরসাইকেল উদ্ধার করা হয়েছে।

আবু সাঈদের বাড়ি কুষ্টিয়ার কুমারখালী উপজেলার চরচাঁদপুর গ্রামে। তার হাত ধরে নব্য জেএমবি নেতা সোহেল মাহফুজসহ অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নেতা জঙ্গি কর্মকাণ্ডে জড়িয়েছেন বলে পুলিশ দাবি করেছে।

বিকেলে শ্যামল শেখকে বগুড়ার জ্যেষ্ঠ সহকারী বিচারিক হাকিম আবু রায়হানের আদালতে হাজির করে ১০ দিনের রিমান্ডের আবেদন করা হয়।

বগুড়ার পুলিশ সুপার মো. আসাদুজ্জামান বলেন, জঙ্গি নেতাকে গ্রেপ্তারের আগে গত অক্টোবরে তাঁর স্ত্রী ও ভারতীয় নাগরিক খাদিজা বেগমকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। এরপর থেকে আবু সাঈদকে ধরতে গোয়েন্দা দল মাঠে নামে। ২০০২ সালে উত্তরাঞ্চলে জেএমবিতে অভিষেক হয় আবু সাঈদের। রাজশাহী অঞ্চলের সামরিক শাখার প্রধানের দায়িত্ব পেয়ে বাগমারা উপজেলার হামিরকুৎসা গ্রামে সর্বহারা নিধন অপারেশনে অংশ নেন। ২০০৫ সালে সারা দেশে সিরিজ বোমা হামলা মামলার ঘটনায় নওগাঁর আদালতে বোমা হামলায় অংশ নেন তিনি।

মো. আসাদুজ্জামান বলেন, বোমা হামলা মামলায় ২০০৭ সালে আদালত তাঁকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দিলে ভারতে আত্মগোপন করেন তিনি। ২০০৯ সালে ভারতের খাদিজা বেগমকে বিয়ে করেন। ২০১০ সাল থেকে শ্যামল শেখ পরিচয়ে ভারতের নদীয়া জেএমবির সাংগঠনিক দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। ২০১২ সালে নদীয়া ছাড়াও বীরভূম ও বর্ধমান জেলায় দায়িত্ব পান। ২০১৪ সালে ভারতের বর্ধমান জেলার খাগড়াগড় বোমা বিস্ফোরণে অংশ নেন। এ ঘটনায় বর্ধমান পুলিশ তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে মামলা করে এবং আদালতে অভিযোগপত্র দেয়। ২০১৫ সালে আবু সাঈদ সীমান্ত পাড়ি দিয়ে ফের বাংলাদেশে এসে জঙ্গি কর্মকাণ্ডে অংশ নেন। ২০১৭ সাল থেকে তিনি নব্য জেএমবির দক্ষিণাঞ্চলের প্রধানের দায়িত্ব পান।

India elephant rescue: The forest guard who saved a calf

A forest guard in southern India has made headlines by saving a baby elephant that fell into a ditch and became separated from its mother.

Palanichamy Sarathkumar, 28, has been inundated with messages of support since news of the rescue in Tamil Nadu state emerged at the weekend.

Many wanted to know how he carried the animal, which weighs more than he does.

"It was very heavy. I just lifted it on the spur of the moment," he said. Calf and mother were later reunited.

Mr Sarathkumar is part of a forest team stationed near Mettupalayam, 50km (32 miles) away from Ooty hill station.

"After the video of me lifting the calf was shown on local TV channels and social media, many called to congratulate me," he told the BBC.

"Everyone in my village is now asking me the same question. How did you lift an elephant?

"I was scared of losing my balance. But my friends stepped in and restrained the calf a bit and helped me to carry the animal."

The rescue happened on 12 December when Mr Sarathkumar took a call as he was heading home after a night shift.

"The caller informed me that a female elephant was blocking the road near the Vanabhadra Kaliamman temple."

He and his colleagues managed to drive the elephant back in to the jungle using fire crackers. The team then searched the area for other elephants.

"We saw this calf stuck inside a small ditch," he said. "It was tired and confused so we moved a big boulder that was blocking its way and brought it out."

They realised the calf was the reason for the female's distress and started trying to reunite them, but the calf was too weak to walk.

"Initially four of us carried the calf," said Mr Sarathkumar. "We wanted to take it to the other side of the road to reunite it with its mother. But there was a danger of being attacked as she was still nearby.

"So, instead of all four of us being put at risk, I decided to carry the calf by myself across the road."

After carrying the baby elephant for about 50 metres, he put it down near a water hole, hoping the mother would find it.

"We waited many hours but she didn't turn up. Sensing our presence might have been making her hesitant, we all withdrew.

"Next day when I went there, the calf wasn't there. But I could see the pugmarks of a big elephant on the forest floor. It seems they were reunited before dawn and slipped away into the forest."

Elephants are highly evolved, social animals which live in large herds. Forest officials say the calf would have died if they had not intervened.

Palanichamy Sarathkumar works in the Anti-Poaching Squad and joined the forest department after witnessing conflict between humans and elephants in Tamil Nadu.

In case you are wondering, he is six feet tall and about 80kg (176 pounds).

The elephant calf weighed more than 100kg.
