It is time for new leadership in Ontario

Friends,

We are facing the biggest jobs and debt crisis of our lifetime. Anyone who has ever been faced with a crisis or emergency will tell you that being cautious, being incremental will not save you. The only way forward is to move confidently and boldly in the direction you know is right.

This week was a moment of truth for Ontario. Four months after the Liberal Government shut down the legislature and walked off the job, this Premier had an opportunity to change course and move Ontario onto the right path. But regrettably for Ontario, Premier Kathleen Wynne and her government chose to further entrench the McGuinty agenda. If the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals won’t make the necessary decisions to get Ontario back on its feet, there’s another party and leader who will.

I am proud to say that your Ontario PC team and I have put forward a plan to rein in overspending, get our economic fundamentals right and grow the economy through our Paths to Prosperity papers.

Bold ideas to create a leaner public service that delivers more value for less money; to lower taxes on business so they can invest and create jobs in our province; to reduce the heavy hand of the 300,000 regulations that stand between businesses and success; to fix the outdated labour laws that have made us uncompetitive and are costing us jobs; and to create more affordable energy for Ontarians by treating energy as an economic fundamental, rather than a social experiment.

We can no longer be content by being first in debt and last in job creation. Ontario will rise again and reach its true potential, but only if we change the team that leads it.

It costs just 25 cents to give a child a nutritious meal in school. Those meals, in return, give children the energy they need to concentrate in school and build a brighter future.

The Canadian International Development Agency has been a generous supporter of WFP’s school meals programmes over the years. Thanks to Canadian support, we’re not only nourishing children’s bodies and minds but also strengthening entire communities. Here are a couple examples:

In Haiti, where Canada supports school meals, WFP and the government of Haiti are working with local farmers to supply rice and milk for schoolchildren. In addition to improving the health of children, this also benefits farmers and the local economy.

In Ethiopia, school meals have helped the Endamino school achieve a 0% drop-out rate over the past three years, and girls now make up 53% of total enrolment.

The McGuinty-Wynne Liberals have chosen to adopt the NDP’s shopping list of expensive demands that will increase government spending by $285 million and will take over $1.3 billion out of the economy in the form of new taxes.

After her recent comments that she did not attend “any meetings” in relation to the cancellation of the Mississauga and Oakville gas plants, it’s clear that Premier Kathleen Wynne needs to come clean with Ontarians.

Despite her denials, Kathleen Wynne was in fact sitting at the table when cabinet was briefed on "Project Vapour" -- their secret code word for cancelling the gas plants.

The result? Over $1 billion of our money wasted, to save five Liberal seats.

Ontarians deserve to know the truth: what did Kathleen Wynne know, and what role did she have in the cancellation?

Wynne’s plan to take us further down the wrong path

With Tuesday’s Throne Speech, Ontario arrives at a moment of truth: We can choose to make the necessary decisions to get our province back on track or we can stand by and watch as our province continues to recede from greatness.

I had the opportunity to meet with the Premier twice in the last two weeks in an effort to make the case to her that Ontario is in desperate need of a fundamental change in direction.

But with less than 24 hours to go before the Throne Speech, I am concerned that Premier Wynne is going to further entrench Dalton McGuinty’s legacy of lost jobs, overspending and debt. We don’t have to look any further than her first act as Premier which increased the size of cabinet by 25 per cent, thereby increasing the cost to taxpayers by $3 million.

The Ontario PC Caucus know that in order to protect the things we care about most, we must reduce the size, cost, and role of government and we need to create a smaller, more focused public service that delivers more value for less money.

While at the same time we know that we need to upsize the private sector by reversing some of this government’s most damaging job-killing policies and encouraging economic growth and wealth creation by bringing forward our own bold, innovative ideas through our Paths to Prosperity discussion papers.

Ontario has come back from a jobs and debt crisis before – and we can do it again. It is going to take some tough decisions – but if we make them there will be benefits for all. Together, we can put Ontario on the right track and reclaim our rightful place as the economic engine of Canada.

Rather than ensuring that our post-secondary education system is equipped to help our students find the jobs of a 21^st century economy, the Liberal government has created a system where too many young people graduate with degrees, deep debts and can’t find a job.

This is why PC Training, Colleges and Universities Critic Rob Leone and I are launching the latest Ontario PC white paper – Paths to Prosperity: Higher Learning for Better Jobs.

This Paths to Prosperity white paper – the eleventh in a series – proposes bold ideas to improve the quality of our colleges and universities and refocus them to better meet the needs of the increasingly competitive global economy. Some of these ideas include:

Addressing the skilled trades shortage by proposing a “College First” strategy for more applied learning;
Fostering better relationships between industry leaders and learning institutions; and,
Ensuring a better balance in our post-secondary institutions because excellent research should not trump excellent teaching.

Ontario has strong colleges and universities. But if we are going to prepare our young people for the jobs of tomorrow, we can no longer accept the status quo in the way we educate and train them.

"Look at my face"

“Look at my face. Do I look like a 27-year-old?” Souad asked me this when I first met her last week. I didn’t say anything, but she certainly did not.

Life hasn’t been easy on Souad in recent years. Her son, born three years ago, has development disabilities and cannot walk or say any words. But she and her husband used to be able to make ends meet. They were happy.

Eight months ago, when they fled their home to the city of Qamishly in northeast Syria, life got a lot more difficult. Souad can no longer get the proper treatment that her son needs. Her family lives in a building without water, sewage or electricity. Food is too expensive, especially since her husband can’t find a job.

“The food that we are getting from WFP is vital to my family. Thank you. How else could we survive?”

With your help, we can continue providing critical food assistance to families in Syria. Donate $36 now and give food to a family like Souad’s for the next two weeks.

Souad hardly recognizes herself in the mirror these days. This conflict has aged her, as it has many of the people I met in Syria. But there is hope.

I saw long lines at the WFP food distributions that I visited last week, but there was enough food for each family. For Souad, amidst so much uncertainty, there is safety in knowing that her family has the food they need for February.

This is why PC Health Critic Christine Elliott and I are launching the latest Ontario PC white paper – Paths to Prosperity: A Healthier Ontario.

This Paths to Prosperity white paper – the tenth in a series – proposes bold ideas to create a twenty-first century model of care that is proactive and based on chronic disease management, health promotion and prevention. Some of these ideas include:

integrating mental health and addictions treatment into a coherent, effective province-wide plan;
delivering more care at home and in the community; and
getting better value by taking advantage of breakthroughs from medical evidence and technology.

We cannot say today that our health care system is the best in the world – but it can be – and it starts with putting patients first and a system that delivers better value for them and their loved ones.

Let’s ask ourselves one simple question: Do our schools do the best possible job of preparing our children to live and work in an increasingly competitive world?

The Liberal government has created a system that puts their union friends and the bureaucracy ahead of our children’s education. We now spend $8.5 billion more per year than in 2003, while at the same time test scores are down in key areas like math, and there are 250,000 fewer students.

To further compound the problem, in too many of our schools parents can't get parent-teacher interviews outside school hours and kids cannot count on sports, arts and academic clubs after the final bell - things that are essential to the learning experience.

This is why PC Education Critic Lisa MacLeod and I are launching the latest Ontario PC white paper – Paths to Prosperity: Preparing Students for the Challenges of the Twenty-First Century.

This Paths to Prosperity white paper – the ninth in a series – proposes bold ideas that would ensure Ontario students can reap the benefits of a first-class education. Some of these include:

Giving principals and teachers more control over in-school decisions;
Boosting student targets and efforts in math, science and financial literacy; and,
Providing boards and principals with the flexibility to reward teachers for participation in before-and-after school activities, through less supervisory time and relief from other duties.

We can no longer afford the Liberals' “not bad is good enough” attitude.

Ontario can offer better jobs for young people, but we need to start with an education system that prepares our kids for the real world.

Who knows our education system best – union bosses and bureaucrats, or Ontario’s hard-working teachers and principals?

For the past nine years, the Liberals have made their answer clear, standing solidly with their big union friends and bureaucrats.
