Joe's Growth Chart

A special little boy had his 1st Birthday this week. They just don't stay little long enough! My gift to him was a Growth Chart....his room is filled with the Fireman theme so that's where the idea started. This is what I came up with.....my version of a growth chart!

The collage shows the process from drawing my idea on poster paper to transferring the pattern to the beige denim I used. When I started painting it was little scary at first but you just have to go for it! I started with the blue along the right edge. I taped the entire side about 11/2 inches from the edge of the fabric with painters tape. The tape helped give me a straight edge. I then started on the dog and then the fire hydrant. The hose came next and then came the water...!!! I didn't know exactly what I wanted but the more I painted the bigger the water got, I added big drops and decided they needed to be falling to the bottom to give the middle of the chart some interest. I decided to paint JOE coming from the water ...that's some wild water!

After letting the paint dry overnight I used a black permanent pen to outline everything, even the blue along the edge. I didn't put the numbers on just yet, I waited until I sewed the back to the front and turned it. I put 3 loops of ribbon at the top before attaching the front to the back. I put the painted wooden dowel with wood beads on the ends through the ribbon loops and attached ribbon to the ends of the dowel.

Once the chart was turned and pressed I then took a measuring tape and marked 6 inches from the bottom and started my measurements up to the top, marking every inch and numbers on each foot mark.
I also punched tags from card stock with string attached so Joe's mom and dad could record the date, height & age and attach it to the chart with a safety pin. I know he will love seeing how big he grows each time they record it....!

Ready or not....2012 is here! Time to turn over a new leaf....get creative...be productive....and ENJOY my blessings. ENJOY is my word for the year. I am always planning something, going to do something, waiting to do something, anticipating something....well it's the first day of the rest of my life and I am choosing to ENJOY!

The first crafting project for 2012 is a Mardi Gras wreath for my daughter's apartment. She wants to bring a little Louisiana back to Texas. The items used on the wreath were purchased from Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Ellis Pottery. With a few pipe cleaners and some beads left over from the parades here in Louisiana along with the purchased items it turned out pretty cute. She was pleased so that's all that matters! It will have it's permanent home in TX soon.

Santa needs a KEY!

It's beginning to look like Christmas around my house finally. I remember all the excitement just a few short years ago when I drug the boxes of Christmas stuff out....! Not much excitement now that my two children are 21 and 18. Oh how I wish for the sweet little faces to come running down the stairs and start digging through the bins and boxes of decorations. It has taken me two days to get all the stuff put up and finally decorated the tree all by myself. It was bitter sweet hanging each ornament and remembering when they made it for me and how old they were. My favorites are the ones they have their pictures on, the puzzle ornament, the CD ornament, the reindeer hand print and on and on! They are all so precious and like I said it was bitter sweet because they were not here to join in!
Well, this year I plan on starting a new tradition ....the Santa Key! I found the cute idea on Pinterest, which is my new addiction. The cute graphics for the Santa Key poem can be found here with all the instructions. I found my keys for $1 at Michaels and the download was free and I have the paper so it's a really quick and easy gift. I plan on making several and taking them to friends who have little ones. Maybe I can start a tradition for their family.

Everybody needs a Santa Key...I just might keep one for myself ;)

Amazing site...WORDLE!

It's been a while since my last post...LIFE HAPPENS!

Not much creating going on these last few weeks...PINTEREST has consumed my life these days. Funny how I can sit for hours and feel so creative and I haven't left my computer!

Today I stumbled on to something amazing...maybe you have heard about it and I have been out of the loop but Wordle is amazing. I always wondered how I could do the cool word combinations to get the look of subway art without having brain freeze trying to figure it all out. This is the perfect site to help with all your word projects! I made my first "Wordle" today and it's easy and fun...go give it a try!

I will be sitting in the Dallas Cowboys Stadium watching my daughter cheer as a DCC on Thanksgiving Day! She's "Living the Life" like we call it around here and we get to join in on the fun!

Craftroom MAKEOVER

Who wouldn't like to have a blank canvas when you start a project! The upstairs dance room got a makeover recently. My daughter is the dancer in the family and this was her special room. It has served it's purpose but now that she is off at college and being a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader I decided it was time to transform it into my special craftroom.
The pink walls and ceiling are not my favorite color but I didn't have the patience to repaint...let dry....then move in...I just moved in and will add my favorite RED to the mix along with turqouise, my second favorite color.

The room is taking shape, still needs some organizing...but will do for now. I have made several things in there already and WOW it was so nice to have all the extra room. I have been cramped up in a spare bedroom with all the leftover stuff everyone decides they don't want in their space! I never realized I had so many supplies, great having the space to spread out. I plan on getting some serious crafting done in this new space of mine....NO EXCUSES!

Proud MOM of a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader!

WOW...my daughter Amelia made the final cut last night to become one of the 17 Rookies on the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders! They will have 17 vets and 17 rookies. It's been a long process, starting in May with about 450+ girls showing up for the 1st round of auditions. The next cut came in around 231 and the next weekend they had to add talent and interview. The pool of girls was narrowed to 51...and then 27 went to training camp. They reported to the training center each night and in 10 weeks learned about 12 dances!
My daughter was previously a Kilgore Rangerette so she was very accustomed to working hard and learning things very quickly...thank goodness! The directors have made cuts each week and last night they let the 34 girls know they were the new squad! Very exciting for her as well as our family! I can't wait to watch her perform, I will be beaming with pride! The tryout process has been documented by CMT and will be aired in Oct. 2011 sometime...The Making of the Team! I can finally be that fly on the wall and see what went on all these months! I am one proud MOM of a DCC!

Goodwill transformation!

I admit...I drop by a Goodwill almost every other day! It's right on my way to town and I just can't help myself! I imagine there is a treasure just waiting for me...and the day I found this frame for $14.99 ...I knew I found it! I wanted to make something with a big impact for my daughter's new apartment and this was the treasure......PURE JOY! (simple pleasures)
It didn't look like much in the beginning but I knew it could be transformed...!
I started off by giving it a good sanding and painted it RED...my favorite color! After letting it dry, I lightly sanded it again along the molding. I painted the molding with a turquoise wash (mix a little water with your paint to make the wash) and gently wiped the excess paint away with a dry cloth. I loved the results but it needed more color so I sanded the molding again and repeated the turquoise wash.
After it was dry I sprayed a light coat of polyurethane to help protect the finish.
Now to the inside...I used the original foam backed picture that was in the frame, sanded it a little and gave it a couple of coats of chalkboard paint. I inserted it back into the frame and it was that simple...!!!

Gotta go for now...off to GOODWILL to find my next treasure!!!

Thrifty Thursday Week 34!

Turquoise Love!

Little tables = love for me! I have had this little beauty for a long time but didn't know quite what to do to it until now. My daughter will be moving into her own apartment and her THEME color is turquoise! I finally knew just I wanted to do...now to make it happen was another thing!
I started off by sanding the whole table and wiping it down with a clean cloth. I put some of the turquoise paint in a tray and added a little water to make it more like a wash. I started wiping the wash on the back (just in case I didn't like it) and when I LOVED it I began wiping it all over in the direction of the woodgrain. As quickly as I wiped it on...I wiped it off with a dry rag. I found I had to work fast because it dried to dark. After it dried I wiped on a small amount of brown antiquing glaze all over and wiped the excess off.
I love the finished product...it turned out just like I imagined! Now all it needs is a cute knob and it's ready to find it's new home in my daughter's new HOME....!

Oops...forgot to put the drawer back for the pic...Oh well...you get the idea...! The top has a piece of glass that fits on the top so the paint won't get messed up, even better!

Backsac!

I love it when I have an excuse to make baby things! My children are 20 and 18 so it's been a long time since I have sewn for my own..they don't appreciate HOMEMADE at this age! I have a friend who is expecting soon and this was my shower gift to her and her soon to arrive Hadleigh Anne, a BACK SAC! This is my own creation...I combined the idea of a backpack and a tote and this is what I came up with. It will be a bag she can throw a few of those necessary baby things in and head out the door and look cute at the same time. When she grows up it can be her dance sac or a slumber sac!

I monogrammed her name on a piece of pink fabric that I inserted to the front of the sac. This is the time to determine how wide your sac will be and cut your fabric accordingly.

I then cut 2 pieces the same width of the pink to attach to the top and bottom to form the front of the sac.

Pin the pieces together and stitch.

The 3 pieces are attached and this is the front of the Backsac.

I added some fancy trim at this time where the pieces were attached...any trim could be added at this time or leave it plain...your choice!

I just love this fancy trip but boy is it a mess to work with...be careful sewing, it wants to grab your needle and hang it up...go SLOW!

You are now ready to cut your pieces for the lining...I cut mine a few inches bigger than the sac front and back ...you will understand what I did in a minute!

This is the back piece of the sac...cut the same size as the front piece.

Pin and sew front to back on 3 sides leaving top open ( I inserted the 2 inch cording loops for the backsac cording at this time on the sac ...picture below) and do the same for the lining except leave a 2 inch opening on the bottom edge in order to turn later.

This is at the bottom of the front and back piece of the backsac ...insert loop to the right side with the raw edges hanging out of the wrong side...I burnt the edges so they would not ravel (This is nylon cording, any type ribbon or cording could be used)

As you can see the lining is longer than the backsac itself...this allows the top of the lining to entend outside and makes a band at the top of the finished sac.

This view shows the length difference better....

With front and back sides turned to the wrong side...insert the lining which is right side out and attach the tops in order to form the sac...turn the entire bag through the opening you left in the bottom of the sac lining.

This is what it will look like after you have turned the sac...press all seams flat.

Insert lining into bag and now you see why the lining was made longer...it creates a nice neat band of color at the top of the bag!

Cut 2 pieces of trim color about 1 inch longer than the finished bag width and about 3 inches wide, turn the edges to finish the width of the bag.

Sew these pieces together to form tube and turn....( I use a long paint brush...works great)!

Attach these to the front and back about 3 inches from top....the cording will be threaded through these later.

The cording is now threaded through the attached tubes and looped through the bottom loop of the sac in order for the sac to be opened and closed like a drawstring.

Knot the ends once the length is determined and burn the edges so they will not fray.

The top and bottom are now attached....you now have a BACKSAC!

I also made a small envelope style bag for a pac of wet ones to fit in....I didn't take pics of the process but it is pretty simple. I will write a post on that process at a later date!

The last gift was a burp cloth made from a diaper. I simply pieced several pieces of fabric, added my trim, attached this piece to the front of the cloth diaper. I then cut a back piece the size of the diaper and sewed right sides together leaving a small opening in order to turn, stitch the opening closed. I also sewed the front to the back along the diaper lines on front in order to hold the two pieces together.

Hadleigh is all set....she now has her own BACKSAC.....!

Display Sweet Memories!

It's been almost 2 years since I lost my mom to a brain tumor. These have been the most difficult years of my life but I have come to realize that this loss is part of my journey. It was overwhelming to go through her things but it had to be done. She loved her jewelry and especially a decorative pin! The pins I have from my mom's collection have been tucked away in a jewelry box up until now but I think they deserve to be displayed for me to enjoy and cherish each and every day!
I found a fabric backed shadowbox frame and decided this was the perfect way to display her special pins! I have them sitting on my bedside table and I get to see them every time I go to bed and every time I wake up......! I sure miss you MOM....thanks for all the Sweet Memories!

Go make some memories....!

POP of color!

I think we all could use a POP of color now and then....! This project piece is in my sister's house...she just had her kitchen remodeled and added an extra bath (my husband is her contractor) it turned out SUPER!
After hanging this particular ironwork piece in her new bathroom she thought it needed something.......there's where the POP of color comes into play!!!
She thought backing it with a color would add some interest to the wall. The project was really simple and quick!
Supplies....foamcore board
                 fabric
                 duct tape

We started the project by measuring the backside of the iron piece and cut the foamcorm to fit tight...push gently...foamcorm bends easily! We then layed the fabric on the board and cut 1 1/2" bigger on all sides in order to fold the fabric to the back. The duct tape held the fabric in place nicely...fold the corners like a gift package. We then placed the covered board into the back of the iron hanging and just like that...she now has that POP of color she needed in her new bathroom!
It sure is fun to craft with your sister and we even had a little helper, Cate was our VANNA WHITE model for the finished look! Thanks CATE...you did a super job!

Off to find something else that needs a POP.....!

Mirror Makeover!

Red has become a recurring theme color around here! I have had this mirror ($20 clearance from T.J. Maxx) for awhile and didn't know quite what to do with it until now. My daughter will be moving into her own apartment soon and her bedroom colors are going to be red, brown and turquoise. This mirror will find a new home from my stash closet to her bedroom wall after it's makeover.

I removed the mirror and spray painted it with gloss RED paint!

Replace the mirror and it's ready to hang!

Wish all makeovers were that simple!

High School Graduation for my son...I can't believe it's here! My daughter graduated in 2009 and has been in college for 2 years and now my son will be leaving home to attend Full Sail University in Florida....uggg...
that's a long way from home!
We had a wonderful day watching him graduate and celebrating with family afterwards! I found his Time Capsule he made in 1st grade and he didn't even remember making it! His first response about some of the papers inside was..."I sure couldn't spell!" I had to remind him he was only in 1st grade. He is so much smarter now that he is a GRADUATE!
I could not be more proud...great son....wonderful person and so talented! His future is bright and I can't wait to see where life takes him. I just hope it brings him back to me somewhere down the line...I am going to miss him so much!

Supplies...Cards with envelopes ( I ran mine through the computer and printed the name)

Towel Wrap !

Graduation time = crafting time! What does a college girl need...a towel wrap of course with school colors! LSU is a favorite school in Louisiana...and that's where this little gift will end up.

Supplies: 1 bath towel ( lightweight works the best, less bulk to sew)
                1 piece elastic 1" wide 22" long (adjust acording to desired fit)
                Fabric for decorative strip down the front (mine was 32" long and 4" wide)
                     (Measure your towel length and add 1 1/2" for turning raw edges)
                1 fabric piece 42" long x 4" wide to make bow on final wrap
                Velcro 2 pieces 4" long
                 Ric Rac for decoration if desired (length of towel)

Begin by folding the ends of the fabric to conceal raw deges and iron it forming a piece about 2" wide.

Finished piece ironed and ready to attach to towel edge.

I folded it over the end of the towel (this will eventually be inside the casing area.

Pin fabric down and stitch.

Stitched and ready for the next step.

I added the Ric Rac on one side just for some extra color!

Bring the Ric Rac over the end just like the fabric (the bottom of the fabric and trim were sewn to finished
edge of towel.

Measure 2" and pin ...don't stitch at this point....(this will form the casing for the elastic )

Attach one side of the 4" velcro onto the towel front top edge.

Do not stitch the casing edge all the way across just yet..you will need an opening to put the elastic through.

Pull your measured elastic piece through the casing and stitch across one edge to hold in place.

Pull elastic up to desired length ( I put it on to see how tight I needed it to fit)
Once the elastic is in place, fold the towel down and stitch across the elastic area to hold in place.
Finish sewing the folded casing area at this time and attach the matching velcro to the other side matching the front piece.

You are finished unless you want to add a little decoration to the top...mine was too plain so I added a bow.

I cut a piece of matching fabric 42" long and made a tube, turned it and tied a bow.

I sewed the tie onto the top of the towel wrap ...added that extra that it needed!

Now I need to wrap it up pretty and deliver it to the lucky GRAD!

Finding LETTERS!

I went on an adventure recently with my sister...we went out looking for LETTERS! She just remodeled her kitchen and wanted her last name framed! I have seen words and names spelled out in all kinds of things but they are quite pricey... so we went searching for letters in our downtown area. I'm sure we looked slightly off staring at things trying to come up with the letters we needed.....and then taking a picture of random objects...but who cares, it was for a good cause!
We did it...found all her letters and then some for later projects! We had a fun time, I even found myself laying on my back to get a picture of the underside of a bridge...I will do anything for my sis!
The final project turned out great...I printed the letters out in Sepia and she framed them in a black frame...wish I had a pic of the final project but it's hanging on her new kitchen wall! These are just some of the letters we found on our scouting expendition....

With a little imagination...anything is possible!

Cruise Tip!

Clear Shoe Bag = Best Cruise Tip Ever! The simple clear shoe bag you hang over the door was the best thing I brought on my cruise a couple of years ago. I recently passed this tip on to a friend who will be going on a cruise soon and thought I would share.
I found my shoe bag at my local Walmart. When I boarded the ship I hung the bag on the inside of the door in the VERY SMALL bathroom. There is very little counter space and the bag becomes your hanging storage!
All the little things we use everyday from lotion to toothpaste, q-tips, hairspray, suntan lotion...and on and on fit neatly into each clear shoe compartment for easy access!
The next best advice....get yourself some seasick bracelets and keep them on throughout the entire cruise! Believe me, I learned the hard way!

Mark your SPOT!

It's a bookmark...ribbon...buttons...elastic hairband and there you have it! I didn't come up with the original idea...wish I could remember where I saw it first but it was so simple and cute I had to share!

I made it for my daughter's friend to mark her place in her drawing journal! I also made a small envelope purse for her to carry her drawing supplies but didn't get a good picture but you can go to The DIY Dish and see the project...really simple and cute! The purse slipped easily under the bookmark for safe keeping.

Supplies:   Ribbon( about 12-14 inches/any width would work)
                2 buttons (large enough to hold elastic band)
                1 hair elastic
Fold the cut edges of the ribbon on one end 1/4" to conceal the raw edge, fold again 1/2" and slip the elastic band into the fold before stitching the width of the ribbon.
Repeat the process for the other end excluding the elastic band.
Sew a button on both ends and place in book hooking the elastic band around the button.

Mark you spot with style...!

Ladybug LOVE!

My mind went straight to ladybugs when I saw the wooden block with antennas at Michael's...odd how that works! The project started with painting the unfinished block red and the ladybug started to take shape.

Oops...I forgot to take a pic of the plain block...but here it is painted red.

I cut a triangle out of scrapbook paper and used Mod Podge to attach it to the center.

After attaching the paper to the block I coated the entire front with the Mod Podge.

The Mod Podge tries clear so no worries.....!

I cut 6 circles out of the same paper and attached with Mod Podge just like the triangle.

I glued wiggle eyes to 2 small black pompoms and glued those to the top with Tacky Glue.

The Mod Podge is still wet in this pic but dried clear.

This pic is the flop version...I tried using pompoms on the front but they were too heavy and would not adhere well....after this I went to the final paper dot idea.....lesson learned!

I used my finished Ladybug to hold a card I made...I'll tell you about that another day!

Revels week!

Revels...what's that? Revels is the final dance recital for the "World Famous Rangerettes" of Kilgore College! My daughter is a sophomore this year, it is only a two year college so this is the end of this journey and on to another. It's sad to see it end, it has been so much fun for our family! Lots of hard work for Amelia but well worth it in the end.
It is a full week of practice and performances...5 times in all with an audience. I was there every single time and loved every minute. I took over 600 pictures, thank goodness for digital!
I brought her gifts each time I went to the show. Lola the ladybug is their class mascot. She loved them all but the cake ball bouquet was her favorite I think but the chocolate covered strawberries came in a close second.
Heading back to Kilgore today to take some pictures of her and her roommate together. This journey is almost over and she will be off to another adventure...time will tell what that may be.
Not only Revels took place this week but my son turned 18. He had to be at the recital on his big day, hated we didn't get to celebrate much but we did go out to eat and we surprised him with a new mountain bike earlier in the day. He will be taking it to college in Florida in August...that's something I would rather not think about. I get choked up thinking both of my children will be gone and the house will be empty except for the animals...and my husband!
Guess this is the next chapter in my life....could we please put a bookmark in this page for a bit longer PLEZ!

Seeing RED!

Everything looks better RED! I have this obsession...I admit it....I confess....I am addicted to RED! I have driven a RED vehicle since I was 17, except for the sad years I had to drive a blue minivan...my sweet husband surprised me with a brand new van with a big RED bow on it but it just wasn't the same. I was soooo glad when I finally got a new car. We shopped for months trying to find the perfect one! I didn't really care what kind, it just had to be RED! I finally found it, a RED Yukon XL...my kids named her "BIG RED"....she was a jewel! I just recently traded her in for another and can you guess what color it is...? YES, I got "BIG RED'S" little sister, another Yukon except for the short bed!
What does this have to do with crafting...well, when I started to paint a few pieces of old furniture I inherited...guess what color I was leaning towards? Yes, your right on RED! I am really satisfied with the results even though the table took one coat of primer and about 4 coats of RED but it was completely worth it...! The table has a home in my craft room for now and the chair is at my desk! Mission accomplished.....now off to get more RED paint. Nothing is safe from RED around here!

Purse...turned Camera BAG!

I think I made the perfect bag even better! I found the cutest bag big enough to carry all my camera STUFF! I have a camera backpack that is wonderful but it makes me look like I'm going on a hiking trip! This perfect bag...it's big, so cute, and can carry everything I need but there's one problem....everything drops to the bottom and clanks together. My solution, make a bag insert to pad my supplies. I know, it's not an original idea but the ones I've priced are way beyond my budget. My insert is padded and made of flannel so it will protect my camera supplies. I even made a couple of dividers with velcro in order to change up the inside depending on what I need that day.
The best thing about the project....once I take the insert out....the camera bag is back to being a purse without a hassle!
I know I should of taken pictures while I was making it but I got so excited I completely forgot!
I promise to do better next time...!

I found the rabbits at Pier 1 just like she suggested. I white washed my pots but instead of the numbers on the original idea, I stamped along the top of the pot rim with a stamp loaded with distressing ink...turned out great! Just what my kitchen table needed to help celebrate the season! Thanks again to Jenn for the super, spectacular idea...it was really simple to complete!
