100 Pages!

Today, I hit the 100-page mark on my latest project.

As I've said before, these milestones are significant to writers because they mark the hours of labor it takes to craft a story.

So what do I have to show for my 100 pages? A story that will likely be reorganized several times, have several plot details added (though I know some of them and am keeping a list), a lot more writing to come and some tough editing by my editor-agent when all is said and done.

But it's a significant place to be because I'm nearly half-way there. It's not just an idea anymore, but an unfinished novel whose story will be told. It's not just a seed anymore, it has roots and a stem and leaves starting to appear.

50 Pages!

When I had a regular running route, I marked my distance by familiar landmarks - the farm where the cows never came near the road, the house where the deer would often congregate along the edge of the woods, the pothole that I somehow managed to thankfully avoid.

Writers don't have concrete landmarks. We mark our pace when writing by our own sets of rules - the first chapter and perhaps if you write like me - the last chapter at nearly the same time, writing "The End" even when it isn't...

Today I hit the 50-page mark on my latest project. Like the hopeful millionaire watching the balls spin in the mesh tube, I watched the page count roll over to the "50" mark and sat back with relief. It doesn't seem like much, but to me it's a milestone - a landmark that says "I'm well on my way."

Back from Bouchercon

I'm back from the Bouchercon conference in Baltimore after a wonderful trip filled with great memories but alas, no Barry Award. My hearty congratulations to Megan Abbott for receiving the award for QUEENPIN.

Still, it was a tremendous trip namely because I got to go with my sisters. Here I am with them the evening of the Barry Award:

Note the Black Widow Spider on my shirt courtesy of my good friend, Doreen, who sent that to me. It was perfect for the ceremony.

Here I am with my wonderful agent, Jill Grosjean along with author Tim Maleeny, who was nominated for a Macavity Award for "Best First Mystery Novel."

Tim, of course, was already prepared to either celebrate or console, Corona in hand. Sorry, Tim. Maybe next year...

Stay tuned to the Midnight Ink authors' blog, InkSpot, for more updates and photos from Bouchercon. It was a great turnout. I arrived home to a blaze of autumn color and a lot of leaves to rake. Leaves are turning, pages are turning and the conference left me with some new fans and a lot of great memories.

Bouchercon Bound, But Barry?

I'm days away from heading off to Bouchercon 2008 in Baltimore where I'll get to visit with readers and other authors, participate in some panels, spend time with my sisters and await that moment to see whether or not I'll win the coveted 2008 Barry Award for "Best Original Paperback" for THE BLACK WIDOW AGENCY.

Can't wait! Win or lose, it's bound to be a great trip and there are many folks going that I know "virtually" but can't wait to meet in "reality" including my fellow Midnight Ink Authors and my terrific agent, Jill Grosjean.

I'll be sure to give a full report upon my return.

When Authors Gather...

Not too long ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to join fellow authors Hank Phillippi Ryan, Susan Conant, and Jessica Conant-Park at a book signing at the Barnes & Noble in Manchester, NH. Jessica brought chocolate cake, Susan and I chatted about dogs and Hank kept us all entertained the whole time. It was so much fun to spend time with these ladies who are all so very nice and to meet so many fans.

We were the ones to get a great surprise to meet our on-line friend, "Mare" from the Yahoo Cozyarmchair group who drove 3 hours with her hubby on her special birthday (won't say which one) to meet us! Here we all are in a group photo.
