Twitter Bird

First, the basics: What is Twitter all about?

It’s a platform wherein users share their thoughts, news, information and jokes in 140 characters of text or less. Twitter makes global communication cheap and measurable. Profiles are (usually) public — anyone in the world can see what you write, unless you elect to make your profile private. Users “follow” each other in order to keep tabs on and converse with specific people.

On Twitter, following someone is not necessarily an admission of friendship, but nonetheless affords interaction and conversation — at least in short bursts.

The first step is to understand and master the vernacular. There are certain words and jargon native to Twitter that you may already have heard in passing. These terms and their abbreviations (in parentheses) are essential for understanding the network.

Tweet: A 140-character message.

Retweet (RT): Re-sharing or giving credit to someone else’s tweet.

Feed: The stream of tweets you see on your homepage. It’s comprised of updates from users you follow.

Handle: Your username.

Mention (@): A way to reference another user by his username in a tweet (e.g. @instantmediagh). Users are notified when @mentioned. It’s a way to conduct discussions with other users in a public realm.

Direct Message (DM): A private, 140-character message between two people. You may only DM a user who follows you.

Hashtag (#): A way to denote a topic of conversation or participate in a larger linked discussion (e.g. #InstantMediaGh, #Ghana). A hashtag is a discovery tool that allows others to find your tweets, based on topics. You can also click on a hashtag to see all the tweets that mention it in real time — even from people you don’t follow.

Twitter has a great online glossary that you can refer back to, should you get mired in a vocab morass.

Important: Carefully reading the national anthem, one will realise that our forefathers had a foresight of future unfortunate events to happen, so some people think they coded an answer in plain site, Our famous National Anthem. Majority of Ghanaians would probably know the first stanza of the anthem. But provided below are the other two stanzas that add up to the coded message in the anthem. Do you think there is truly a hidden message in the national anthem? Use the comments box below to educate other readers. It will later be compiled for a subsequent post.

I still hold memories from g-Ghana 2010 as if it was yesterday. I can't wait for the 2011 edition which has the theme : Growing Local, Going Global. With this in my own class one English, I know that Google are trying to and are changing the status quo of local content not being present on the on-line community with their various products that range from normal web apps to complex programs. g-Ghana is going to follow it usual categorization of putting developers in a different group and also putting business minded people in a different group so that there will be enough time to tackle all areas carefully.

The g-Ghana Website says these for the Event:

Day 1: For Software Developers

April 28th

Day 1 will focus on using Google developer tools to push the boundaries of web applications. Google engineers and web development leaders will guide you through a full day of in-depth sessions, including hands-on code labs dedicated to cutting edge web and mobile technologies.

Day 2: For Technology Entrepreneurs & Marketing Professionals

April 29th

Day 2 will be chock-full of Google product demonstrations aimed at tech entrepreneurs and marketers. Our goal is to help spur innovation and business growth in Ghana and across the region. We want to inspire business to make the most of the web and mobile space!

I hope you all can make it and enjoy my experience

Importance Of University Education

A university is an institution of higher education and research, which grantsacademic degrees in a variety of subjects. The word ‘importance’, can mean the state or fact of being of great significance or value. Education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another. The existence of such an institution has brought about a lot of mixed reactions from people all around the world over the importance or significance of it. But I as a student in a University believe that such an establishment has more merits it brings to society than a lot of people think about.

People do argue that university education is too expansive for the average citizen of a country to attend because it comes with a lot of expenses like accommodation and transportation. They further add that attending a university is long and tiring for people who have gone past the active age of their youth because it entails moving from one lecture to the other in a short matter of time. But the greatest of all which seems to belittle the idea of one attending a university of higher education is that a lot of people have made it in life, as in, getting rich, getting married and looking at how one explains success; well know people like Bill Gates and Paul Allen, founder and co-founder of Microsoft, Osei Kwame (Despite) owner of Despite Music shops, and former president of Ghana Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings all are looked up to as successful people who all are where they are without attending a university.

Attending an institution of higher learning like the university can bring a lot of advantages to the betterment of an individual, his/her family and the nation as a whole. If I attend and graduate from a University I have the opportunity to better myself in terms of experiencing the rich cultural and social practices of the nation through the interactions I have with other students from different cultural, social and financial backgrounds. Learning new things like how one greets in other ethnic group and how one should dress during social and religious functions are some of the benefits I am going to get as a person who attended a university.

University education tends to be career specific and thus it prepares one adequately for the near future in the field of work. It’s not like secondary school where everyone had to learn the same thing. If one wanted to pursue a career in nursing one would have to learn a course that had nothing to do with nursing. With this we know that the importance of one attending an institution of higher education like a university is to widen the prospect of one gaining employment in the near future. When one attends a university he/she gets the required skills to fill the gap in the job market.

In the hierarchy of respect in the traditional society, one gains respect according to the age and position one holds in society. Attending a university now forms part of the criteria for one earning respect and being assigned specific responsibilities in society because university graduates are seen as people who have taken their time to follow instructions in school making them responsible and they can transfer the skills they have learn't to their respective job fields. Examples of these are chiefs and assemblymen who are where they are because they had the added advantage of a university degree.

The nation as a whole gets a lot of benefits from universities because the people who are trained and taught in the schools graduate and become the next civil servants and private entrepreneurs. When universities produce graduates they work and pay taxes that the government uses to build roads, hospitals, schools and provide social amenities for the whole nation.

Decision making is an integral part of our life. We have to take decisions throughout our lives and sometimes, decision making can be a very tough and challenging process. It can leave us perplexed and often wondering, as to what is the right choice. University education is significant, because it enable us to take the right decisions and prevents losses.

Graduates of universities do serve as role models for the youth of the country because attending a university is the highest point one gets in his educational exploits. With this young people get motivated follow in the footsteps of these graduates because there is added respect and opportunities that comes ones way. Example of a person with respect in the field of education is Kofi Annan, the past UN Secretary General.

In conclusion, even though people have different opinions on the importance of university education. If you would like to get respect, honor and favor in front of your family and society, attend a university.

Did She Kill Me. A perfect scenario of the effect of social networking sites on our daily life is when a school was trying to organize a quiz competition and letters we sent out to the respective participating schools on a change of time and venue the letters got there too late after the bus had left for the earlier arranged venue. All this could have been avoided if Social media platforms had been utilized.

EOSNS - Effects Of Social Networking Sites (1a)

COMPACT THE WORLD

Example I can get to speak to someone i know or even don't know by logging into my facebook and searching a name and initiating contact.

Gone were the days where one had to go through the pain of having to buy a writing pad, a pen and an envelope and much more annoying a postage stamp to post a letter.

But with the coming of websites like facebook, myspace, bebo, etc the order of the day has changed from writing to typing. (Have you noticed the era of good handwriting is gone).

If you have ever sent a message on any of the social networking sites then i guess you have contributed to making the world a smaller place for us.

Google TV: Your TV and the Web, together again

Google TV: Your TV and the Web, together again

The whole Web TV thing has been tried before ... just not very well, frankly. Supposedly, you'll be able to use Google TV with your existing DVR or cable box, although Google execs say they're working with Dish Network on a custom Google TV DVR for Dish subscribers.

Google reps showed off Google TV (which had been well leaked over the past few weeks) during the company's I/O developer conference Thursday morning (well, after a few embarrassing hiccups), and at first glance, it's not much different from what we've seen from Web TV devices of years past: an interface that lets you browse the Web on your TV just as you would on a desktop browser, all with the help of a QWERTY remote with a mouse pointer.

But Google is promising more than just a Web browser on your TV; no, they say, Google TV will be nothing less than a "single, seamless experience," starting with the familiar-looking Google search box that lets you conduct instant searches across your typical onscreen programming guide, your personal streamed content, videos on YouTube, general search results, you name it.

In one of the examples, a Google rep typed "MSNBC" into the onscreen search box, and one of the results was the live MSNBC channel. Click it, and boom, you're there. Another example: Type in "30 Rock," and in addition to Web search results, you'll get a hit for a future "30 Rock" showing; click it, and Google TV will let you record that showing, just as you would on your TiVo.

Google TV also — from what we saw at today's demo, anyway — can do a nice job helping you find your shows whether they're on TV or online, with custom episode guides for a given series and icons that tell you if an episode is available on Hulu or Amazon Video on Demand.

Want to watch a show on Amazon? Just click, and up comes the browser (Google Chrome, by the way — yes, with Flash support), which you can also use to watch slide shows on Flickr, play Web-based video games, or stream endless videos on YouTube. (And what about Hulu, by the way? Will we able to watch Hulu via Google TV? No details on that, but given that Thursday's demo featured Hulu icons in TV search results, the hints are there for the taking.)

There's also a picture-in-picture view, which lets you check out NBA stats from ESPN.com on the onscreen browser while having the actual live game playing on a smaller, embedded window. And if you want to stream your PC-based music collection to your TV, no problem.

The Google TV home screen lets you access bookmarked shows, stations, and Web results, play your latest recordings, stream videos via Netflix, or fire up Android applications — either standard apps like the ones on your Android-powered phone or (coming soon) apps optimized for Google TV.

Indeed, next year's availability of a developer kit for Google TV, as well as Google's promise to open up the Google TV source code for all to see, was a major highlight of this morning's demonstration, with Google making pointed references toward companies selling ... ahem, closed set-top boxes. (I think they're talking about you, Apple TV.)

How will Google TV work? Google reps were light on the details, but in basic terms, you'd be plugging the HDMI output of your existing cable/satellite box or DVR into a Google TV-enabled HDTV, Blu-ray player, or "companion" box. The Google TV device (powered by Intel Atom chips optimized for handling HD video) would then take control of your DVR via an IR (infrared) "blaster." That means you could use Google TV whether you're getting your TV signals over the air or via any cable or satellite carrier — although as I wrote earlier, Google says it's working with Dish Network on a customized Google TV setup.

The Sony TVs and Blu-ray players and Logitech's "companion" box, all infused with the Google TV software, will be available at Best Buy this fall, we're told. How much will they cost? Well, that's the big question, and no answers were forthcoming Thursday.

So, can Google succeed at the Web TV game where others have failed? Well, if you ask me, much of it depends on the performance of the actual Google TV hardware. I can browse the Web on my TV right now using my PlayStation 3, but it's a painfully slow, awkward experience. Whether Intel's Atom chips can provide the horsepower to deliver a peppy interface remains to be seen — as well as whether the coming Google TV input devices will make it easy to jockey a cursor on your jumbo HDTV screen.

A healthy catalog of Google TV-optimized apps could also make a big difference, and this is where Google will be leaning on the Android development community to work its collective magic. Last but not least, price matters.

Overall, I think Google TV looks promising, but the proof's in the pudding — and we'll have to wait until the fall for that.

In the meantime, check out Google's promo video right here:
With love and patience, discipline and tears,
Then bit by bit stepped back to set me free,

Allowing me to sail upon my sea,
Before I was myself you made me, me

With dreams enough of what I was to be

And being good and wise, you gracefully
As dancers when the last sweet cadence nears
Bit by bit stepped back to set me free.

For love inspires learning naturally:
The mind assents to what the heart reveres.
And so it was through love you made me, me
By slowly stepping back to set me free.

What Makes A Ghanaian Tick (I)

1.
