Jax dog was surprisingly good natured around the bear - - at least at first. He paused - potentially in fear at first - then, after Mike had put a leash on him showed signs of aggression.

And in terms of the 375 mils... well, yes it "ain't too much" but it was just enough for one night. Look up my "Whisky Trek" posts if you want proof of my love for the good stuff. http://bit.ly/bY4q9t

Looks like another great hike! Weren't you worried about the dog running into one of those bears? I'm pretty sure I've read about that river being a good one for trouts... you guys should definitely get back there with fly rods!

Sam - thank you for the trip. It was really great and I agree that we talked out a lot of our issues and were given many tools to work with. The other Scout Masters were a wealth of knowledge and the hardest part is ahead of us. Making it happen.

I too love setting a pot directly into the fire. We were cooking over an isobutane stove but put the pot into the fire to warm up water for mixing with our whiskey.

Note that I put "Leave No Trace" in quotes because it definitely left a trace, albeit a barely visible one. He dug down to the mineral soil and set the duff aside, built the fire and then we put it out that evening using snow.

The next morning we scattered the leftover half-burned fuel, smoothed out the coals, put the forest duff back atop the coals stirring them together and then finally placed more duff atop it all. Here is a photo of our firepit the next morning:

Nice little trip Sam. I think sticking a cookpot into the embers of a small fire is my favourite way to boil up some water for dinner. There is something very simple and almost 'cowboy' about it.

All the participants on the course were BSA Scoutmasters looking to find ways to "better" their troop backpacking experience. And although all of them complimented me and my teaching partner on what a good job we had done espousing ultralight techniques I also saw a vast quantity information being traded off amongst each other in terms of tips and tricks that they use to enhance backpacking for scouts. This informal conversation between scouters was as rich with ideas for most participants as the more formal, session-based ultralight training we were teaching.
