The team met in Colonie around 1PM. Everyone is super excited. Me, Hector, Roberto and Rob are in the jeep. Sonja and Merc are already there.

The three-hour drive to Boston goes by smoothly. We quickly and accidentally find a small, cheap parking lot. Boston feels loud and busy - and beautiful in its own way - as we walk through crooked roads and loads of brick. Pedestrians and car honks fill the streets. There is a threat of rain which occasionally sprinkles but never fully materializes.

An unfortunately closed restaurant leads us to Alma Cantina which turns out to be very delicious and highly recommended. I had four tacos: baja fish, carnitas verde, carne asada & ground beef, and each one was better than the last. The Whaler Pale Ale was a perfect pairing.

TD Garden Arena is huge and flooded with folks of all ages wearing Megadeath or Iron Maiden t-shirts and battle jackets. Our nosebleed seats were a little claustrophobic and sweaty but the stage view and sound were both terrific. We sat down just as Megadeath started. The sound was great and the stage production was well lit in so many different styles. Boo to the targeted lights that were aimed right into our section and repeatedly blasted us in the face.

The playlist was short but sweet. Every song was played with precision and they sounded as good as ever. Bittersweet that it's their farwell tour, as frontman Dave Mustaine (age 64) was diagnosed with Dupuytren’s contracture, a hand condition that causes fingers to bend inward and makes playing guitar painful. This was my first Megadeath show and could very likely be my last.

Dave gave a sincere thanks to the fans and really seemed to soak in the cheering as the stadium said goodbye.

After a visit to the merch table we sat down just minutes before Iron Maiden started their set. They are impressive. The tour is essentially a greatest hits compilation that showcases the bands first nine albums.

There is a confluence of things happening here - incredibly loud and crisp sound; a unique stage production featuring animation, special effects and pyrotechnics; and the band leaning into a bit of theater with each song. Frontman Bruce Dickinson, despite being 68 years old (and having a cancerous tumor removed from the back of his tongue in 2015), belted out every song and fearlessly scrambled about the stage.

Eddie the Head, the skeletal band mascot, was featured all night in the backdrop animations but also physically appeared on stage a couple of times walking 15 feet tall and looming menacingly over the band members. The crowd cheered everytime.

As the band said goodbye, Bruce reminded everyone: "Have a good night. Have a good weekend. Have a good week. A good month. A good year. Have a good life because you deserve it! You're the only friends we've got so take care of yourselves and each other. We'll see you soon."

What an incredible show. We walk the streets with the occasional 'What a show!' thrown our way. We see Roberto as an angel with massive wings.

We discuss and dissect the shows over snacks on the ride home. The rain finally begins to come down in the last hour of our drive. We got back close to 3AM.

We arrived by cab and the most talkative cabbie I've ever met. This was my second visit to the venue (and the first time I was working for charity). It's an impressive space.

Roughly 25,000 fans

We had lawn seats which were fine. The sound was great and giant screens throughout the venue clearly showed the stage. The biggest outrage is the $42 I paid for two 24 ounce beers.

The night started at 6:20 PM with a 40-minute set from the legendary rap group Public Enemy. Lead emcees Chuck D and Flavor Flav killed it, looking and sounding tremendously youthful.

Guns N Roses started at 7:40 PM and played for nearly three hours, with a 28-song set that covered everything, from “Appetite for Destruction” to both “Use Your Illusion” albums and “Chinese Democracy,” as well as guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan’s mid-2000s supergroup Velvet Revolver.

Slash was outstanding, playing as sharp as ever. He played a mean pedal steel on a cover of “Wichita Lineman" and an extended solo leading into “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

McKagan took lead vocals for a cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Thunder and Lightning.”

Axl's voice was better than I thought it would be. He crushed the setlist:

The Time The Bounty Sank Twice

HMS Bounty, also known as HMAV (His Majesty's Armed Vessel) Bounty, was a British merchant ship that the Royal Navy purchased in 1787 for a unique botanical mission. The ship was to travel to the South Pacific under the command of William Bligh to acquire breadfruit plants and transport them to the British West Indies. Unfortunately for the Royal Navy, a now infamous mutiny took place which prevented the mission's success, and forever cemented an epic maritime story to history.

I discovered the story thanks to Hollywood and a VHS copy of the 1962 film 'Mutiny on the Bounty' starring Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard. It's a botched telling of the story but the cinematography and location shots in Tahiti are gorgeous. And it's easy to enjoy the chemistry between the actors particularly with Brando and his costar Tarita whom he later married.

There is also a movie from 1935 starring Clark Gable and Charles Laughton which has many historical inaccuracies.

A more faithful retelling of the story came out in 1984 named 'The Bounty' starring Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. Hollywood led me to read a more comprehensive perspective via the trilogy of books by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall. As an adult, the story inspired me and my new wife to spend our honeymoon in Tahiti and Moorea, which was 100% worth it.

The First Bounty

Bounty sailed for Tahiti on December 23, 1787. For a full month, the crew attempted to go around South America's Cape Horn, but adverse weather prevented this. Bounty then proceeded east and reached Tahiti, (then called "Otaheite"), on October 26, 1788 after ten months at sea. The crew spent five months collecting and preparing 1,015 breadfruit plants living ashore and becoming socialized to the customs and culture of the Tahitians. Master's Mate and Acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian married a Tahitian woman as did many others.

After five months in Tahiti, Bounty set sail for home on April 4, 1789.

The mutiny broke out on April 28, 1789. Despite strong words and threats on both sides the ship was taken bloodlessly. Of the 42 men on board, 22 joined Christian in mutiny, two were passive, and 18 remained loyal to Bligh.

Most of Bligh's crew were cast off in the ship's launch boat. Bligh undertook an arduous journey to the Dutch settlement of Coupang, located over 3,500 nmi (6,500 km). He safely landed there 47 days later, having lost no men during the voyage except for one killed on Tofua.

On January 15, 1790 the mutineers, after some trial and error, rediscovered Pitcairn Island, which had been misplaced on all Royal Navy's charts. After the decision was made to settle on Pitcairn, livestock and other provisions were removed from Bounty. To prevent the ship's detection, and anyone's possible escape, the ship was burned on January 23, 1790 in what is now called Bounty Bay.

The mutineers remained undetected on Pitcairn until February 1808, when sole remaining mutineer John Adams and the surviving Tahitian women and their children were discovered by the Boston sealer Topaz, commanded by Captain Mayhew Folger of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

Seventeen years later, in 1825, HMS Blossom, on a voyage of exploration under Captain Frederick William Beechey, arrived on Christmas Day off Pitcairn and spent 19 days there.

The Second Bounty

Bounty was commissioned by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio for the 1962 film. She was the first large vessel built from scratch for a film using historical sources. Previous film vessels were fanciful conversions of existing vessels. Bounty was built to extrapolated original ship's drawings from files in the British Admiralty archives, and in the traditional manner by more than 200 workers over an 8-month period at the Smith and Rhuland shipyard in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

To assist film-making and carry production staff, her general dimensions were greatly increased resulting in a vessel nearly twice the tonnage of the original. While built primarily for film use, she was fully equipped for sailing because of the requirement to move her a great distance to the filming location. The ship cost $750,000 and took three moths longer to build than scheduled.

Bounty was launched on August 27, 1960. Crewed by Lunenburg fishermen and film staff, the vessel sailed via the Panama Canal and arrived in Tahiti after filming had begun. Bounty was scheduled to be burned at the end of the film, but actor Marlon Brando protested, so MGM kept the vessel. After filming and a worldwide promotional tour, the ship was berthed in St. Petersburg, FL on June 19, 1965 as a permanent tourist attraction, where she stayed until the mid-1980s. She would appear in various other movies including the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and traded owners.

Loss Of The Second Bounty

On October 29, 2012, enroute from New London, CT to St. Petersburg, FL, the second Bounty sank due to weather from Hurricane Sandy. The ship was 50 years old. Two crew members perished, including Claudene Christian, a descendant of original mutineer Fletcher Christian. The other was long-time captain Robin Walbridge who was raised in Montpelier, VT, and later moved to St. Petersburg, FL.

2025 Taco Walk

The first official Taco Walk occurred on a warm and picturesque Sunday in Albany, NY. My friend Josh and I had drawn a plan of attack and the newly created score sheets would enable us to keep careful track of every factor involved. Josh's son gave us a ride to Lark Street. We opted to walk our way home sampling tacos along the three mile path. Finally, we were underway.

First stop, La Pollerina, 216 Lark St, Albany, NY 12210. Website

The space is small, with only a small selection of metal stools along the counter, and no tables or bathrooms. The menu shows equal brevity with a focus on simple dishes or family dinners which rely mostly on their rotisserie-cooked chicken.

The tacos are well portioned and taste terrific. The chicken is moist and tender. The tortillas aren't pan seared but instead are perfectly steamed. Instead of a traditional verde sauce they offer a smokey brown sauce with a nice heat which we both found quite enjoyable.

A glorious first start. Highly recommend the Street Tacos for $5 each.

The second restaurant was Oaxaquena Triqui, 68 N Lake Ave, Albany, NY 12206. Website

A short walk along Washington Park and we came to the next stop. The space is simple and has a few tables for seating. The menu offers a wider range of tacos and options including beef tongue and fish.

The tortillas are pan seared perfection. The pulled chicken is very good though not quite as tender as the first place. The sauce is a traditional verde and has great flavor.

Solid traditional taco joint. I recommend the three tacos for $9 or $3.50 al a carte.

Third spot is Viva La Cinco De Mayo, 809 Madison Ave, Albany, NY 12208. Website

It was a sunny walk along Madison Ave, through the former St Rose campus, to the third and final taco stop. This is the biggest space yet with indoor and outdoor seating. The menu is also large with a variety of American-texmex options.

The tortillas are the weakest link and a little spongy. The pulled chicken is good and the sauce is a normal verde.

I adore this place and recommend the three tacos with rice for $10.99 and sit outside if you can.

We stopped off at the Madison Pourhouse for a refreshment and to discuss our experience. Josh had some fancy IPA and I went with a Paulaner (German lager). There was one restaurant that was conspicuously unavailable on this particular day and we agreed to do another run to try additional spots. All in all, it was a perfect day filled with Mexican inspired delight. To be continued!

My favorite local sandwich shop, Fresh N Pressed, now offers a taco special and they are worth a go! Tacos, rice and a drink for $14.

Josh whipped up some specialty tacos one day and I captured its beauty.

Joe Perry Project

Uncle Jim and I made the trip down to Port Chester, NY on Saturday, August 23, 2025 to see the Joe Perry Project.

Jim rented a hotel room as it was a 2.5 hour ride from my house and nearly another hour to Jim's. We found a terrific lunch spot at the Out Of The Way Cafe then headed to the board walk and Playland to kill some time before check in. It was in Playland that we discovered the show had been postponed.

Jim was able to switch the hotel room and we headed back upstate.

I was able to take time off from work to see the postponed show on Wednesday, August 27. We checked for any updates along the way.

Jim and I found tasty pizza at Colony Grill, took a pre-show dinner at Sonora and got to walk around the city a bit. The show took place at the gorgeous Capitol Theater. The band is made of Joe Perry (lead guitar, vocals), Brad Whitford (rhythm guitar) and Buck Johnson (keyboards, vocals) from Aerosmith; Chris Robinson (lead vocals) from The Black Crowes; Robert DeLeo (bass) from Stone Temple Pilots; and Jason Sutter (drums) from The Joe Perry Project.

It was an amazing night of talented rock and roll. What legends! I am so thankful to have had the experience. Special thanks to Jim for making the trip happen!

2025 Albany Visit

A visit from from a good friend makes a for a terrific exploration of the Hudson Valley.

One of the more impressive properties is John Boyd Thacher State Park which included the Indian Ladder Trail and it's two waterfalls, the rock climbing access area, and the beautiful scenic overlook.

Just 20 miles further up the road is Rensselaerville Falls which offers top and bottom access to the huge, stepped waterfall.

The Kinderhook Nature Preserve is a lovely spot for quiet reflection and walking in nature's harmony.

We also enjoyed several views of Cohoes Falls.

A tour of USS Slater (DE-766). It's the last one of its kind afloat and it has been patiently and beautifully restored. Our tour guide, Grant, was full of stories and fun details. Tight quarters! Mind your head!

The New York State Museum offers robust exhibits including one of the largest collections from 9/11 which I opted not to picture here. Other neat things include the Cohoes Mastodon, indigenous man, a history of real firetrucks. Plus, the original set from Sesame Street.

Raylon and I also visited Washington Park as well as numerous culinary and refreshment spots including Sub Culture, Madison Cafe, Lost & Found, Lionheart On The Green, Fort Orange Brewing, Fidens Brewing Company, Druthers Brewing, and Madison Pourhouse.

The Death of my Mom

My dear mother, Nancy Alexander (Lague), from Newport, VT, passed away today at the age of 69 in her home in Punta Gorda, FL. Cancer never met a more stubborn patient. Her suffering, endured from lung cancer and years of treatment, has finally ended. Many people contributed to her treatment fund back in 2019, and it truly provided assistance, a kindness for which she was eternally grateful. She is predeceased by her brother Robert, just two weeks ago, and is survived by her husband Bill, her sisters Joan and Lynn, and her son (me).

Mom's calling in life, without question, was caring for animals. When I was little she worked in a veterinary clinic helping cats (we had a lot of cats) and by the time I was an adult she was a state wildlife rehabilitator, working with all kinds of animals from deer to emu. After moving to Florida, birds were her calling and she helped many birds both as a volunteer and at home, caring for as many as 80 at one point. It was always lively at her house!

I was able to spend time with her recently. We enjoyed Mexican food and talked about memories like the time the school principle found me inspecting the inner workings of the middle school elevator via the mechanical hatchway in the ceiling. "How else am I supposed to learn?!," I demanded as he marched me to his office and called my mother. She thought it was so funny.

She taught me to be clean, to be kind to animals, and to look at the funny side of life. For this and so much more I am very lucky. Love you, Mom.

ps. Mom was a dedicated cigarette smoker and would like you to know it is a terrible habit and you should quit asap.

ps.s. Mom would also like you to know that it's Taco Tuesday and you can probably get a good deal on queso.

2024 San Francisco

In 2024, I visited California and had a terrific tour guide give me the highlights of San Francisco.

Highlights included: the best empanadas I've ever had in my life, cruising by the San Francisco Giants stadium on scooters, a drink called Space Adventure Cobra, some video games, some redwood trees, another second place poker finish, tattoos, a rock concert in Berkely featuring A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, and Primus, PLUS a visit to the Castro on a trolly. Included amidst all of this was delicious food, refreshments and camaraderie.

A trip of a lifetime!

Eclipse 2024

I visited my friend Tim in the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont to see the eclipse. That morning I had an early breakfast at the Brown Cow in Newport, a great and busy restaurant, which saw a two hour wait time as I was leaving.

I stopped at a Girl Scout table where they charged me $3 for solar viewers.

The city was incredibly busy with visitors. Newport PD said the lower part of the city would be in gridlock by 1 PM. It's estimated that Vermont saw 160,000 tourists for the event.

Tim and I headed out to Holland Pond and parked at the fishing access. There were already three cars parked with folks tailgating by the water. Tim and I walked down a slight trail away from the access and setup on a picturesque rock face jutting into the water. The eclipse was about to start when a Game & Wildlife Warden came and kicked everyone out of the access as they were neither boating or fishing. He came over to us with a request to move the car but, after discovering that Tim was local and I was formally local, he simply said that he was on his way to Seymour Lake and would not be returning. We had the entire space to ourselves.

There was cloud cover near Newport and we feared it would travel our way but the sky remained clear. The eclipse began around 3:25 PM and lasted for about 3 minutes and 26 seconds. It was surreal to watch the contrast of our world darken. Birds and animals grew silent. The air got chilly. Stars popped out and twinkled.

Then, slowly the world came back to it's normal self.

Balloon Festival 2023

Chris and I made early morning trips to see two different hot air balloon events.

First up was the 32nd Annual JPMorgan Chase Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival. We left at 4:30 AM and found the event space which was busy with setup.

No outside food allowed was allowed at the event and yet the security looking in my bag missed the 2 sandwiches, 4 assorted granola bars, a Lacroix and two bottles of water. They waved a security wand on everyone but only over the front which seems like 50% of the job.

The views were gorgeous and vibrant like a Pixar movie come to life. We got to go for a tethered flight which was peaceful but a bit crowded in the basket.

ADK Trip 2023

Raylon arrived on a Delta flight and we hit the road headed north straight to the Adirondacks. Our first stop was to visit Fort Ticonderoga which is a preserved historic star fort on Lake Champlain in Ticonderoga, NY, built by the French in 1755 and captured by the British in 1759. We used to have school field trips here when I was a kid. It's a fascinating and well preserved view of history.

We checked in to the Airbnb in Jay, NY and it served as a perfect home base for our explorations.

The next day was full of adventure which included a romp around High Falls Gorge, a view of Flume Falls, a visit to the McKenzie Pond boulders (which offered some seriously tough rock climbing), and the Ray Brook Brewhouse for libations.

Cascade Mountain was today's adventure. It is the first 46er peak that either of us ever climbed at just over 4,000 ft. (There are 46 summits in the ADK that are over 4,000 ft).

Down climbing was not fun for my knees. The 360 degree summit was totally worth it. #nomorestairsplease

We took a side trip to lovely Montreal. Luckily we had our passports. L'aventure du jour: les tatouages! And tacos, of course. We stayed the night at the Hilton and put a lot of miles on walking around the city.

The next morning we visited the Biosphere located in Parc Jean-Drapeau on Saint Helen's Island. An incredibly interesting space!

Whiteface Mountain was next on the adventure list. The summit views were stunning and there weren't many people around. Visibility of Vermont wasn't good due to wild fire smoke from British Columbia. Raylon was popular with the ladybugs. The Whiteface Castle houses one of the coolest gift shops I've ever visited.

Rainy day. We visited some smaller attractions like Stagbrook Falls, the Cobble Lookout and Big Slide Brewery.

Today's first adventure was Ausable Chasm. It's a huge park with lots to do and very picturesque viewpoints.

Adventure 2: Olympic Ski Jumping Facilty which is vertigo inducing at the top. Beautiful views followed by tacos and good cheer.

Our final adventure was a visit to Star Trek: Original Set Tours in Ticonderoga, NY which was a nice nerdy finish to the blood, sweat and beers we left in the ADK. The owner inherited the original set blueprints that Gene Rodenberry used for the show. They have meticulously recreated them including the Enterprise bridge, med bay, Spock's quarters, and more.

An amazing trip with good a friend. Forever grateful for these experiences.

Bonnaroo Chris aka Chris Alexander proudly presents "WHY" an extra large digital art project that incorporates many of the people, elements and icons of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival spanning a period of 14 years. Utilizing over 100 layers intricately woven together in Adobe Photoshop, 'WHY' represents many hours of late nights and weekends and painstaking attention to detail, to achieve an impressive size and scale.

Around the edge of the project, starting in the bottom left corner of the picture displayed at top, we see a whirlwind view of Centeroo:

How was it? Totally unprepared and it was unbearably hot. Still, it was magical, I fell in love with the experience and my favorite moment was watching the sunrise on Sunday morning.

How was it? The most crowded year I've attended. And it was freaking hot. My favorite moment was 'Mission Icefly' when paragliders dropped thousands of blinking led lights onto the unsuspecting crowd on Friday night.

How was it? My first year going as a volunteer. The weather was perfect and the caliber of music top notch. My favorite moment has to be Jack White's amazing set.

How was it? This year was freaking hot. Back with the volunteer team and we rocked it. My favorite moment was singing along with the team during Billy Joel. Also, being thrown in the air by the Bonnaroo Cheerleading Squad was pretty neat.

How was it? Another awesome year volunteering and the weather was mostly favorable. My favorite moment was when the festival was evacuated for a tornado threat and the entire team hid out for an hour. Luckily, the storm never hit.

It's a crazy time right now. June is supposed to be an exciting month as tens of thousands of us converge in Tennessee. Bonnaroo is our emotional support festival that normally gets us through the other 51 weeks of the year.

Let's honor the sacred month of spicy pie!

I've raided my collection and I'm going to give away old school Bonnaroo memorabilia through the month of June. Complete your collection, gift it, create art ... whatever you want. The grand prize is a brand new hand drum from Hatter Drums!

OTI delivers the Transition to Home model of orphan-care in developing countries. I volunteered as part of a site visit to Zimbabwe in 2019, which was part of the reason I opted to miss Bonnaroo. This tiny 501c3 charity has no paid employees, no buildings or physical assets and is leading the way in diminishing the Global Orphan Crisis through eight global projects.

Donations will support associated costs for textbooks, school uniforms, household and hygiene necessities, and the Transition to Home program in part or entirely. OTI commits to supporting each orphan in the program until they finish school. On average, $500 will cover an orphan's needs for an entire year; $5,000 will cover an orphan's needs for their entire childhood.

Support any local, national or international charity whose mission speaks to you.

Having worked in the nonprofit industry for a long time, I can tell you that winter/spring is the worst time of year in terms of charity fundraising. Sure, the holidays are generous and that generally gets everyone through but sometimes it's close. If you have a favorite charity, a spare $20 bucks could make a difference for them right now.

Volunteer

Volunteering offers a positive feeling of accomplishment in return for some hands-on experience. I've attended Bonnaroo many times, in many ways and the most rewarding option for me, by far, has been as a volunteer. That's not to say it's easy. Doing all the Bonnaroo stuff on top of a volunteer shift makes for a long flipping day. But you're getting a free ticket to a magical place AND you're doing something good for world. When I look back each year, the effort was totally worth it.

I receive lots of inquiries each year about volunteering in exchange for a ticket to Bonnaroo. Your first stop should be with C'roo, the official Bonnaroo volunteers. You'll work three six-hour shifts before or during the festival. Repeat volunteers get seniority and better choices.

If that doesn't suit you, check out Clean Vibes and their events page. They service a lot of festivals nationally in case you're looking to attend other events. You'll buy a ticket to the festival through their system and they'll refund you once your service is completed. You can work shifts before, during or after the festival.

Another option is volunteering with a vendor or organization that is exhibiting at the festival. If you don't know anyone affiliated with such a group, I recommend networking online. Inforoo and a number of the Facebook groups talk about volunteer opportunities. If you start looking for volunteer stuff, you'll definitely find a position. Be a good volunteer and a positive inspiration for others!

Be on the lookout at Bonnaroo: You'll discover a handful of organizations at the festival in an area called Planet Roo. All sorts of organizations are represented, ranging from Oxfam to the Tennessee River Coalition, each with a unique mission. Find Planet Roo and go say hi to these folks. I promise you'll be inspired.

Back Home

If you have the time to volunteer at home, you can make a difference year round, and in your own backyard. In 2018, Bonnaroo charity partner We Are Neutral came to my area in Florida and organized a clean up of a local water inlet and estuary. I personally picked up 13-pounds of trash! Multiply that by the other 40 or so volunteers and you get an idea of the impact even a small group can have together.

I suggest Googling volunteer options in your area or look at Volunteer Match. Once you start looking for ways to volunteer, you'll notice them all the time. As the old Jewish saying goes ... If I don't take care of my brother, who will? And if not now, when?

ONETrack International
Global Orphan Support - OTI provides long term support to orphans and orphanages in Africa, Southern Asia and Central America. OTI provides for education, health and caretaker support for each child. http://onetrackinternational.org/

Why I like it: This charity focuses on providing each child with support until they finish school. As a part of the the Africa visit in 2019, I saw first hand the opportunities the children now have, as well as the environment they'd be left in if the charity didn't exist. I opted to not attend the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival 2019. Ironically, I missed 2009 too but for different reasons.

A huge shout out to my friend, Ron. Ron has been to the festival several times and when he found out I wasn't going to make it, he created a totem of me that he carried around the entire time. I kept getting photos and video of people with the totem and it made my day every time.

There were several factors in my decision but the biggest was that I started volunteering for a charity called ONETrack International that works to provide long term support to orphans around the world.

In August of 2019, I had the honor to deploy with the charity's volunteer team to Africa. We orchestrated a site visit at an orphanage in Zimbabwe where I captured everything via photos and video.

After completing the work, the team took a backpacking trip through Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia. It was an extraordinary trip to a part of the world I might not otherwise see. The sights included Victoria Falls, a safari in the Chobe National Park and a ferry that crosses the only international intersection of four countries in the world: Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Volunteering is a big part of my life. I've gone to Bonnaroo four times now as a volunteer and that has made the festival an even better experience for me. If you have the time and energy, I highly recommend finding one or more organizations whose missions speak to you and look into being a volunteer. It can be quite fulfilling to help your fellow humans.

I hope those of you who attended Bonnaroo 2019 had a great time and kept the positivity alive! I'm looking forward to returning to The Farm.

In August of 2019, I had the honor to deploy with ONETrack International (OTI) which is a charity focused in providing long term support to orphans in developing countries.

OTI delivers the Transition to Home model of orphan-care in developing countries. This tiny 501c3 charity has no salaried employees, no buildings or physical assets and is leading the way in diminishing the Global Orphan Crisis through eight global projects. Donations will support associated costs for textbooks, school uniforms, household and hygiene necessities, and the Transition to Home program in part or entirely. OTI commits to supporting each orphan in the program until they finish school. On average, $500 will cover an orphan's needs for an entire year; $5,000 will cover an orphan's needs for their entire childhood. ONETrackInternational.org

I was attached to a volunteer team visiting an orphanage in Zimbabwe. As the media guy, my job was to capture everything via photos and video. My teammates, Hilary and Todd, would meet me at the hotel when I arrived.

Departure was from Miami Airport where security was more interested in my bar of soap then any of the camera equipment and accessories I had packed. A long flight to Doha, Qatar (watched three full feature movies) and then a slightly shorter one to Johannesburg, South Africa. From there, my last flight would only be 90 minutes long and would take me to Harare, Zimbabwe. Before leaving, the stewardess made sure all of the overhead bins were open, (it was a small plane), then opened two canisters of pesticide and walked down the aisle to fumigate everyone and their carry on baggage.

Once in Zimbabwe, and before I could purchase a temporary visa, my temperature is taken via laser. On my way to the hotel the driver tells me unemployment is a shocking 90%. We pass through large crowds in the city center, which he says are all folks waiting for work. We pass a large, red Coca Cola factory complex.

It's winter here and the air is cool and very dry. The sun is so unbelievably strong. I thought it would be comparable to Florida but it's not even close. We pass by markets created out of repurposed wood, with various wares spilling out onto the sidewalks. Everything here is an opportunity for recycle and resale. One vendor has turned polished paint cans into cookware. Another has converted rubber tires into a range of items from purses to plant holders. Trash is abundant along the roads and, because of the winter weather, areas of trash are burned for warmth.

The driver warns me about taking pictures amidst busy intersections as police will often be standing there to direct traffic. If they think you've taken their picture, they may ask to delete your photo or take you right to jail.

Outside of the tourist facilities like our hotel, electricity is limited. It comes on randomly, often late at night, and everyone is simply accustomed to getting up and using it when available. Also, sim cards are a way of life for anyone using a cellphone.

Bottle water is the only trusted source. Given our short window of being in country, I can't risk gastrointestinal issues. This includes eating any salad foods that may have been rinsed in local water. I mostly stick with cooked chicken and rice dishes. Nando's Chicken is the Chick Fil-A of the region that we enjoy a few times. We ate at the highly recommended Chop Chop restaurant and it was delicious. Unfortunately, they did not accept western credit cards or U.S. currency (most places will accept one or the other). We had to send our driver to exchange the money for us.

Outside of our site visit near Harare, we went to two local animal parks, the Mukuvisi Woodland and the Lion Park. The locals take great pride in their parks which drive considerable tourist dollars. We saw several lions and lionesses, a jackal, spotted pigs, antelope, zebras, wildebeast and crocodiles. As with most captive animal environments, none of them look very happy.

Each day of the site visit presented new opportunities to digitally capture the children. Turns out the facility is also a local soup kitchen so that any child within walking distance may get a free meal, twice a day. A meal can be fresh bread and hot tea or beans and rice, depending on the resources available, but there is always something for them to eat. The facility uses water collection, solar power and maintains a healthy community garden.

The staff are knowledgeable, selfless and dignified. During one casual conversation, a staff member inquired about our evening the night before. We had dinner and drinks at the hotel, nothing fancy - meanwhile the staff member's power never came on so they just went to bed. Awkward moment but that's just the reality here.

The kids are so excited to interact with us and range from grade school to high school age. During one classroom discussion, the kids offered their desired professions after completing school. Pilot, doctor and journalist were the common answers. Twafsana said he wanted to be a photographer. So, I gave him a crash course in using the Nikon and tasked him with taking shots of his peers. He was a natural.

But it's more than just interacting with the kids. We meet facilitators who help mothers with AIDS to learn proper physical and mental care of their babies. (AIDS is still a prevalent issue in many African countries.) We meet a local group of women who have created a flourishing economy through micro loans and investments.

In the face of a corrupt government and a desperate economy, this little oasis provides informal education resources and hot meals to children. It's a sanctuary of community and hope and a better future. What an extraordinary place! By the last day, everyone is used to our presence and my camera. I took thousands of photos and these are just a sample.

We brought as a gift six new soccer balls (deflated) and a hand pump. I also delivered a gift from my niece, Madison, who made forty-four friendship bracelets for the kids. To say they were excited is an understatement.

The whole experience was incredibly inspiring for the team. Our evening debriefs were fueled by the emotions of the day and the eagerness to do more. To see such profound good happening and to have even the smallest part in it is a feeling of joy that I am very lucky to have.

At some point, the work is finished and it's time to do a little sightseeing. It's a short plane ride toward Victoria Falls, one of the wonders of the world.

We used AirBnB to find a guesthouse on the compound owned by Obert. His family lives in Harare but he works on safaris nearby so he rents the guesthouse for extra money. The compound is completely enclosed and electrified wire runs long the top of the brick wall. "To keep the elephants out," he says, "they like to destroy my garden." Inside the gate, the yard is perfectly manicured with plenty of shade and sitting areas. The guesthouse has three bedrooms and uses only solar power and a gravity feed water system. We don't see the elephants but tracks and poop tell the tales. The guesthouse is a nice place and it's not expensive. We also enjoyed the nearby watering hole, 3 Monkeys. Downtown is busy with a lot of shops and restaurants. The Shearwater Cafe is terrific, particularly the sweet potato and ginger soup. Meerkats and monkeys scavenge the empty lot across the street.

Victoria Falls is on the Zambezi River and serves as the natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. It's considered the widest waterfall in the world and it is spectacular. We visited the park on the Zimbabwe side and spent about 4-hours walking along its edge. Pictures and video really don't do justice to the scale. It's massive and loud and well worth the $30 entry fee. #vicfalls

The animals are protected in the park and they come close. Regular feedings happen adjacent to The Rainforest Cafe to encourage proximity.

From Vic Falls, our friend Obert helps us arrange a taxi ride to the Botswana border. The driver let Todd plug in some music and 70's Reggae was a perfect fit for the 50-mile ride. Occasional people or baboons can be seen walking along the side and traffic is very light. The sun is close to setting when a wild elephant crosses the road ahead of us and lingers just long enough for a few pictures before disappearing into the bush. The smell is unmistakable.

It's dark when we reach the Zimbabwe border and we pass through easily to Botswana immigration. After a brief passport snafu, one of the immigration officers is assigned to drive us into nearby Kasane. He's not super happy with the task and he's eager to get it over with. He stops the car just prior to the border and we all get out and take turns stepping both feet in a tray of water on the ground - a tradition from the days of hoof and mouth disease. The third lodge turns out to have vacancies which is lucky because our driver is almost out of patience. The Water Lily Lodge is cozy and has every amenity we need including a great continental breakfast. The next morning, I step out on the small balcony of my room to quickly see a wildebeast being chased by two lionesses. Wow.

The downtown area has plenty of shops and restaurants and I try some well done wildebeast. Warthogs roam everywhere with impunity as both humans and cars stop to let them pass. Botswana's economy is doing well, in part to it's thriving tourist industry. It's the only country we visited that did not charge for the entry visa.

We book a safari through the Chobe National Park which is known for the 50,000 Kalahari elephants, among many other animals, who inhabit the area. We watch a herd of approx 200 slowly march by. Few things in this world are as adorable as a baby elephant. Antelope, warthogs, giraffes, water buffalo and hippos are spotted along the way. #chobe

Kazungala Ferry Crossing

For years, the Kazungala Ferry Crossing has served as the means of commercial and private transport between Botswana and Zambia. A massive bridge project is nearly complete but, for now, the ferry takes one tractor trailer truck and a handful of cars and pedestrians across the river at a time. The line of trucks qued up for the ferry stretches for miles even though the ferry ride takes only a few minutes.

The ferry crosses the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers. The ferry also crosses the only international quadripoint - the intersection of four international borders - in this case, Botswana, Nambia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. We toast to the moment with libations and cheer.

I'm not one to leave a beer unfinished even when I'm entering another country. We find a driver to take us the 50 miles to Livingstone and our first stop, The Fairmont Hotel. It's completely booked as are the next two hotels we try. We stop at The Panama and they have three rooms. It's by far the worst accommodations of the trip mainly because of the lack of mosquito netting in the room. I sleep under the bedsheet listening to them swarm around me.

For dinner, we found Flavours, which was a fantastic Indian curry restaurant. It was a festive atmosphere with a birthday party, complete with music and dancing.

The next morning, we make our way to the Fairmont for breakfast. Our intent was to get to the Devil's Pool (which is on the Zambia side) but time runs short. We pass through Zambia immigration which puts us in no man's land - between Zambia and Zimbabwe immigration. Here we find the Bridge Café which overlooks the Victoria Falls Bridge. Hilary schedules a bungee jump and we grab lunch. At one point, a cute but sneaky monkey steals half of my sandwich. Hilary takes the 111-meter leap and her screams echo through the huge canyon. So good.

We reenter Zimbabwe and fly from Vic Falls back to Harare. It's dark when we land and with our cash reserves depleted, we ask the taxi to stop at the nearest ATM. He gives us an odd look and tells us that none of the ATMs in the country will dispense money as all bank assets have been frozen. We make arrangements for him to take us to the airport the next day so we can pay him. The hotel is nice and has zero mosquitoes.

The team parts ways at the airport having forged bonds by working together and seeing these incredible sights. I'm the last to depart the country and manage to make a few friends including one guy wearing a Tampa Bay Rays shirt. Small world.

Africa, in all of it's forms, is a remarkable place and I'm so grateful to get a small glimpse. #africa

Maynard dressed as Beetlejuice and asked us to call him by name three times. Gorgeous hanging light displays were shaped to focus on the band but allowed great depth and movement. Every visualization was custom to each song.

The show had a zero tolerance camera/video policy which was heavily enforced. During the last song, Maynard ordered security to stand down and allowed pictures to be taken.
