Stopped buying leather

I am happy to let all of you know that, I have taken a decision to stop buying leather. This decision has been taken by me after reading lot of articles on the cruelty on animals in the leather and fur industry.

Recently i have purchased non leather chappals and also i have cancelled my decision to go for a leather jacket.

There are lot of instances where animals are treated inhumaely in the leather industry.

Please join hands with me to fight for a cause.

I request my readers to stop buying leather and look for alternatives. If we stop buying leather, the cruelty will come down automatically.

Due to personal reasons, I could not post articles in the recent past. Sorry for this and i will continue to post articles regularly from now on.

I was thinking about Kittu (our pet dog, which was passed away recently) in the morning and the following points struck my mind incidentally.
1. They are not selfish.
2. Animals don't lie.
3. Animals don't pretend.
4. Animals don't try to prove their supremacy by killing others.
5. Animals don't invade our homes. (not intentionally, some times they enter by accident).
6. They don't know hatred.
7. They know only Love, Affection, Innocence.
8. No caste, creed, colour differences for them.
9. They do not cause Global Warming.
10. They don't skin us alive.
11. They don't wear us.
12. They don't do chemical testing on us and cause agony.

Please love animals and get loved by them. Its an eternal feeling which can be felt only by experience.

Think you'd look cool in that leather jacket? How cool would you feel if you knew that you could be wearing baby goats' skin-or even skin from dogs? Cows aren't the only species whose skins wind up in shoes and handbags-pigs on factory farms, exotic animals like kangaroos and alligators, and dogs and cats just like our own beloved companions (who are killed for meat in China and other countries and whose skins are then imported into the U.S.) are among the millions of animals slaughtered every year for the global leather industry.

Confined to filthy stalls barely bigger than their own bodies, breeding pigs on factory farms spend their entire lives on concrete-unable to forage or do anything that comes naturally to them. These sensitive animals are subjected to agonizing mutilations like teeth-clipping, ear-notching, castration, and tail-docking-all without painkillers. Constantly pregnant or nursing, sows are squeezed into narrow metal "iron maiden" stalls, unable even to turn around. Although pigs are naturally social animals, their stress level is so high that they often resort to cannibalism and tail-biting when packed into crowded pens or when they are kept isolated and confined. Lack of exercise causes pigs to become so weak that they can barely walk a few yards. At the slaughterhouse, workers jab metal hooks into their eyes, mouths, or rectums to force them to move faster. Pigs inadequately "stunned" by bolt guns and bludgeoning with gate poles, hammers, and wrenches may be fully conscious when immersed in a tank of scalding water for hair removal.

EXOTIC SKINS

Other species are hunted and killed specifically for their skins, including zebras, bison, water buffaloes, boars, deer, kangaroos, elephants, eels, sharks, dolphins, seals, walruses, frogs, crocodiles, lizards, and snakes. A large percentage of imported crocodile shoe leather and other items made from wildlife come from endangered, illegally hunted animals. Humane treatment is not a priority of poachers and hunters who deal in the dirty exotic leather trade:

Goats may be boiled alive to make kid gloves, and the skins of purposely aborted calves and lambs are considered especially "luxurious."Snakes and lizards are often skinned alive because of the belief that live flaying imparts suppleness to the finished leather.Alligators on factory farms are packed into half-sunken sheds, immersed in filthy stagnant water rife with their own waste and the stench of rancid meat.Crocodiles are often caught in the wild with huge hooks and wires and reeled in when they become weakened from blood loss or drown.Many animals are skinned when they are still alive-sometimes remaining conscious and in agony for up to two hours-and then beaten to death with hammers, axes, and aluminum baseball bats.In Australia, where millions of kangaroos are slaughtered every year for their hides, orphaned joeys and wounded kangaroos are considered collateral damage and the government mandates that they be decapitated or hit sharply on the head "to destroy the brain.

"DOGS AND CATS Other skins come from more familiar faces. Hundreds of thousands of dog and cat skins are traded in Europe each year (with an estimated 2 million killed in China to meet the demand). Many are bought unknowingly by consumers since products made from dog and cat fur are often intentionally mislabeled and do not accurately indicate their origin. In France, more than 20,000 cats are stolen for the skin trade annually; during a police raid on a tannery, 1,500 cat skins, used to make baby shoes, were seized.

These days, I am feeling very happy. When I restarted writing on this blog, I have never expected that, my blog would be read by so many people. I just started this blog to post my random thoughts, but one video which i have seen has changed my entire perspective and focus about this blog.

I am really thankful to all my readers and without their encouragement, it would be very difficult to keep up the motivation. Really i thank one and all for encouraging me. I was going through one website and found this very very interesting story.......

First God created the ox, and He said to the ox, "Today I have created you! As a beast of burden, this is what you will do. You will go to the field with the farmer all day long. You will work all day under the sun, pulling the plow or hauling wagons! And to do this, I will give you a life span of 50 years."

The ox objected. "What, you want me to live that kind of life for 50 years? Let me have 20 years, that'll be plenty of work, and I'll give 30 years back to you." So God agreed.

Then God created the dog, and He said to the dog, "Okay, dog. What you're going to do is sit all day at the door of your house, and guard the door. Any people that walk by, or try to come in, you bark at them. I'll give you a lifespan of 20 years for this!"

And the dog objected. "What? All day long I have to sit by the door? No way! Just give me ten years. I'll give you back the other ten!" So God agreed.

Then God created the monkey, and He said to the monkey, "A monkey has to be entertaining. You get to make everybody laugh and do tricks. And I'll give you 30 years of life to do this."

And the monkey objected, too. "What, Make people laugh? Monkey tricks? Twenty years will do for that, and the other 10 years, I give back to you." So God agreed.

Then God created Man. He said to the Man, "Your job is to sleep, eat, and play. You will enjoy many things in your life. You're my special creation, and all you have to do is be good and enjoy your life. For this kind of life, I'll give you a 20 years lifespan."

The man objected, too. "What, God? Such a good life? Eat, play, sleep, do nothing? Enjoy the best and you expect me to live for only 20 years? Why don't we make a deal? Since the cow gave you back 30 years, the dog gave you back 10 years and the monkey gave you back 10 years, I will take those years! That will make my lifespan 70 years, right?" So God agreed.

And that's why...

For our first 20 years, we eat, sleep, play, enjoy life and do nothing much. For the next 30 years, we work all day long. For the next 10 years, we entertain our grandchildren by making monkey faces and doing tricks. And for the last 10 years, we stay at home, sit in front of the door and bark at people!

Small Indian Story

Once upon a time, there was a big forest. So, big and so wild. A great lion was the king of that forest. This Lion was so big and gigantic. All other animals were very much afraid to come near to it.

One day, this great Lion was sleeping under a tree after a heavy meal. It was sleeping very happily and wanted no disturbance. However, no animal could dare to go around that place.

A small rat came there. It was so small and has never seen such a huge animal. It do not know how dangerous was the Lion is. For that small rat, the shape of the lion was so funny and it liked the mustaches of the lion. So, it has climbed on to the lion and start playing with those mustaches. The lion felt disturbed and woke up. It was so angry and wanted to kill that rat. It said to rat, "Bloody, how dare you, I will kill you in this instance". The rat was so afraid and was frowning and pleaded the lion not to kill it. It said, "Oh King, Please leave me. I will help you when you need a support". The Lion felt surprised and also felt little sorry for the small animal. It gave a smile to the rat and said, "Are you kidding me ? You gonna help me ?" It laughed and let the rat go.

After some days, the Lion was chasing an animal and mistakenly fell into the trap set by a hunter. It was unable to come out of the trap and was roaring helplessly. It was not able to escape from the trap. After making lot of attempts, it started again to roar for a help. The small mice, which was given life by this Lion was playing nearby. It heard the voice of this Lion and came there rushing. By seeing the Lion in the trap, it felt sorry.

The rat with its sharp teeth was able to cut the nylon ropes of the trap. It was so quick and fast. With in very short time, it was able to cut all the ropes of the trap with its teeth and let the great Lion escape from the trap. The Lion with the help of this small rat, was able to protect its life.

MORAL OF THIS STORY : Compassion always pays. Be Compassionate.

Mark Post a professor of physiology and his colleagues of Eindhoven University of Dutch, have invented artificial meat in the Laboratory. They have created this by collecting cells from a live PIG and combining with other products of different animals. This new invention is called "Soggy Pork".

Scientists are now in a work to test and make this soggy pork more realistic in terms of taste and matching it to the interests of the consumers. They believe that, once it tastes like real meat, people will definitely prefer to buy it. They are also hopeful that, this meat is helpful for the environment and also will help millions of animals from Slaughtering.

Our DOG Rescue story

During the last summer I was in India went there to celebrate my break from Work. I was with my family. My father usually feed street dogs every day. Every day one female dog used to come to get her feed from my father.

One day early in the morning, my father went to bring news paper and found this dog inserted her face (uptill neck) in to a mineral water can. Being summer, that poor dog wanted to drink water and strangled herself into the water can. Its like an astronaut. But, it could not get rid of it. With lot of confusion and fear it started running around. It has two small pups, but by looking this dog like this, they were afraid to come near to it. This dog was not in a position to accept any support from any one because of its fear and confusion. My father tried to help it, but it ran away from him. The dog was in a position where, it can not drink or eat food.We have searched for her the entire day and also the next day. We could not found her. We almost lost our hopes. Exactly at that moment, I found her. I immediately called my father and we both started to chase it. It went inside a building which is under construction. My father and I carefully trapped her. It was not in a position to move now from that place. That mineral water can has a tap to it. So, i held that tap with one hand very tight and with another hand the can. The dog struggled to get rid of my grip and i knew very well that, if it struggles, it will be free from the hell. The same thing happened. Its head came out of that can, and ran away to her pups.

We felt very happy.

NATURE & OUR RESPONSIBILITY

There are lot of questions these days are being asked. Why should one think about Animals for that matter even about Others (Humans)? What if, if they are killed ? Does other animals are not killing animals? I think all these questions are non - sense and are not correct.

Every creature created on this earth has a right to live, right not to be abused.

Why should we think about Nature and Animals ?

We all agree that, GOD has created this nature and all the living beings and non living beings are the elements of the nature. All the living beings are created to help each other in order to grow further. The nature has given equal space to Human beings in the form of plain lands and to animals in the form of forests and water to live. So, nature has clearly marked who should live where. But, since the ages, because of population explosion and greed, we have encroached the natural homes of Animals by cutting down forests. In lot of cases, we are cutting down forests not only for living but also for other reasons like mining, industrial set ups, airports etc.,

We are doing only this because, we feel that we are superiors to others (in some cases than Nature). Yes !!! to some extent this logic sounds right. But, when we are occupying the homes of others, it is our responsibility to show the alternatives to them. If someone invades into our home, we will react. Poor animals are not doing that also. Because of our greed, we are on the verge of loosing our companions. The GREAT PANDA of China is one of those. Donkeys, Horses, Dogs, Cats, Chicks, Pigs, Cows etc are serving mankind unselfishly. They are working for us and are part of our growth. You can see Donkey's association with Man in a Mega City like Cairo. When, those animals are cooperating to us, is it not our basic duty to think about them ? Is it not our responsibility ?

What if, if the Nature is Destroyed or Animals are killed ?

My basic question again is who are we to kill them ? Do we have any roll in creating them ? Does anybody said we can kill them ? Who has given us the right to kill them ? Just because we are strengthy, use machinery and invent things, can we kill any one ? Do we allow somebody else who is little powerful than us to kill our family members ?

We are killing those innocent animals because, they can not counter or ask. They simply bare what ever we do and die. They can not react. So, we are showing our heroism on those, who can not react. How sadistic this is? How cruel this is? Apart from that, is it a real heroism ???? I doubt ..........

I faced a strange question from someone during one of my recent online discussions. They asked me, "Are animals not killing animals" ? I felt strange when i heard this question. Animals do not know what is right and what is wrong. They just know, when they are hungry, they should eat some thing. They do not know, killing some other animal is crime or injustice.

But, as human beings, we know what is right and what is wrong. If we loose that wisdom, what is the difference between us and animals in the forests? We are educated and matured only to show cruelty towards the other creatures? Is it what our education taught ?

Because of our immatured acts, we are disturbing the nature and at last, we are only suffering. Cutting down the forests is the main cause of Global warming. We should blame only ourselves for this. Like wise, we are imbalancing the nature to a great extent. We are only thinking about today and destroying everything. But what about our future generations ? We should stand as culprits in front of them ? Does this, we want?

We till now has very few answers to the challenges thrown to us by nature. We do not know what to do in the case of a Tsunami or an Earth Quack. These dangers are occurring frequently because we are imbalancing the nature.

Towards the end, the bottom line is, we should change our mindsets. We should treat all our companions as equal to us and should show some dignity towards them. Other wise, those days are not too far, where we will turn into cannibals or skin each other alive.

Story of Faith - An Amazing Dog !!!

The Dog was born on the Eve of Christmas 2002. The dog was born with 3 legs, 2 hind legs healthy and one abnormal front leg which has to be amputated. He ofcourse could not walk when he was born. Even his mother did not wanted him. His first owner also did not think that he could survive, so wanted to put the dog in to the sleep.

But then his present owner CAITY STRINGFELLOW saw his and wanted to take care of him. She decided to teach her little dog to walk on his own. She named the dog FAITH.

In the beginning she put FAITH on a surfboard to make him feel the movement. Later she used peanut butter as a lure and reward for him for standing up and jumping around. Amazingly only after 6 months, FAITH learned to balance on his hind legs and to jump to move forward.

After further training in the snow, now he is walking like a human being.

FAITH loves to walk around now. No matter where he goes, he attracts people. He is fast becoming very popular on International arena and has seen in many newspapers and TV Shows now.

A book named "With a little Faith" is being published on him now. He was even considered to appear in one of the harry potter movies.

His present owner now want to give up her job and wants to take FAITH around the world to teach that, even without a perfect body, one can have a perfect SOUL.

This story simply says that, without giving excuses, if we attempt and work hard, any thing is possible. We must thank FAITH for teaching all of such a wounderful message being disabled.

Importance of Teaching Compassion and Giving Humane Education to Children

According to Wikipedia, Compassion is a human emotion prompted by the pain of others. More vigorous than empathy, the feeling commonly gives rise to an active desire to alleviate another's suffering. It is often though not inevitably, the key component in what manifests in the social context of Altruism.

Why Compassion is important:

Man is a social animal and always looks for the support and guidance of others. He always was and is depended on others to progress. Right from first man to the modern man, we always are depended on others, particularly on Nature. When i say nature, its trees and obviously animals. Animals were great friends of man since ages. They always helped man right from transportation to laboratory testings. So, in the development of man and his culture, the role of animals is almost indispensable. But, in the mean time, we have ignored that, animals are also creatures and since they are helping us, we should be more thankful to them. With the time we started thinking that, exploiting animals is our right. But, which is not. God has created all the living beings with a different purpose. Cutting down trees without purpose is now leading to Global warming and Air pollution. The purpose of creating trees is to give oxygen, which we forget so badly.

Like wise every living being is created for a purpose but not to get exploited or being killed ruthlessly. The main difference in this thinking is because in these busy lives, we are not teaching our kids about being compassionate to others. Its mainly the fault of the system itself. Our parents always taught us about being compassionate. But in these days, how many parents are talking about this? I doubt very few. The percentage may be around 10, i guess.

What is importance of promoting compassion or humane education?

1. It helps to prevent violence and helps kids apply the concepts of respect and kindness towards animals in their own lives.

2. It helps kids understand current and past social justice movements.

3. It empowers kids to realize that they can make a positive difference in their communities and the world around them.

4. It motivates young people, who are naturally fond of animals to become involved in a cause that they care about.

5. It prevents them being anti social elements.

6. It could change your kids lives ... and may be your own!!

Hence, i request all the readers to teach compassion and humane education to your kids. Systematic re-inforcement will make your kids understand the importance of it and will behave like responsible human beings.

Where r we going ? What are we doing ?

Every one of us like Dolphins, right ? If your answer is Yes, wait a bit. Think a while. Because not every one of us may like them ....... in fact some of us kill them.

Wondering why ?

Are Dolphins curel ?? No.
Are Dolphins harmful ? No.
Are Dolphins our enemies? No.
Just because they are innocent and can not react ? May be YES.

This slaughter is not carried by professional hunters but agonizingly by young people who just completed their teenage. Then why the teenagers kill them ?

JUST TO SHOW THAT A BOY HAS ENTERED FROM TEENAGE TO MATURITY.

Surprised ?? This massacre is happening in front of our eyes. This is happening in between us. Every year thousands of youth participate in it. Instead of teaching humanity to youth, we are teaching them cruelty. This is happening in Denmark. Ironically, all the youth kill those dolphins who come to play with the youth waiting to slaughter them, in a friendly way and innocently without knowing that, they will be killed by these impotents. They are killed with a hook and when they are hit by this hook, these dolphins make a similar sound like a small baby's cry . But the killers are humans and cruel also. So no matter what the animals feels, young people are very happy to kill them. If some one kill our babies in front of our eyes just for a meaningful reason, how we react ?? Are we doing this because, poor dolphins can not react ???

Moreover, this is called Dolphin killing "Festival".

I was going through a very interesting website and found some great text. The summary is given below. It clearly says that with few exceptions no religion is favoring the animal slaughter.

Religion, whether organized or not, is an intimate part of human culture. All of the world's major religions have explicit or implicit principles concerning the proper character of the human-animal relationship. Most of the world's religions recognize the importance of animals and the animal-human interaction. However, few major religions hold ceremonies to mark the birth or death of animals that are the equivalent of ceremonies marking the birth or death of humans. This seems to indicate that many world religions relegate animal life to a secondary status when compared to human life. Nonetheless, ethics and morality concerning the use of animals is an important issue that most world religions consider to be within their domain. Sometimes, the religion's standpoint on issues relating to animals is clearly stated in holy writings. In other instances, an interpretation of a written passage is made by a person or official body within the religion.With few exceptions, the general attitude of most of the world's religions toward the relation of humans and animals can be characterized by five general principles. 1) Human life is more valuable than animal life because humans have a "soul" (or something equivalent to a soul). (2) Humans have a God-given authority over other animals. This is usually expressed as "dominion" or "stewardship." (3) The right of humans to consume animals for nutrition and to use the labor of animals is recognized by several, but not all world religions. (4) Cruelty to animals—pointless acts that will cause an animal to experience pain or suffering—is prohibited by most religions because it displays attributes that are undesirable in civilized societies. Even religions that previously or currently practice animal sacrifice often specify that the animal be killed in as painless a manner as possible. (5) Most religions urge kindness toward animals.

Christianity.

For many Christians, an indicator of the desired relationship of humans to animals is found in Matthew 10:29-31 in the Christian New Testament. The verses suggest that, although the life of a sparrow is of much less value than a human life, "not a sparrow dies without God taking notice." For Christians, humans may have a soul but God still considers the life of a sparrow important enough to take notice of its passing.

Judaism.

The God-given authority of humans over animals is recognized by Judaism, but not without restrictions. The prohibition of cruelty is so strong in Jewish law that the slaughter of animals for human consumption is carefully scrutinized by a specialist in the field. If there is any indication that the animal suffered unnecessarily, it is considered unclean (unfit for human consumption). There are exceptions to this rule for medical research. The Polish rabbi Moses ben Israel Isserles (1525-1572) taught that anything necessary for medical or other useful purposes is excluded from the prohibition of cruelty to animals.

Islam.

The right of humans to consume animals for nutrition and to use their labor is recognized by most Muslims. The Qur'an is neutral on the subject of the consumption of meat. However, moderation in all things, including eating, is encouraged (Qur'an 7:31; 5:87). If animals are slaughtered for food, the slaughter must be done in strict accordance with Islamic law and in such a way as to cause as little pain as possible. Most Islamic scholars hold that the Qur'an prohibits animal cruelty, which is defined as causing unavoidable pain and suffering. This last prohibition is generally applied to sport hunting as well.

Hinduism.

The Hindu religions also denounce cruelty to animals. TheBhagavad Gita (verse 5:18) proclaims that a self-realized soul is able to understand the equality of all beings. To a Hindu, animal souls are the same as human souls, progressing to higher means of conscious expression in each life. Hinduism teaches that every soul takes on a life for a specific purpose and that to kill an animal stops the progression of the soul and may cause great suffering. For this reason, most devout or orthodox Hindus do not consume meat or use meat products in any form.
Many Westerners have difficulty understanding why a country as poor as India allows cows to wander the streets, break into gardens, and pilfer food from market stalls. To a devout Hindu, the cow is sacred. The Mahabharata, an epic poem of ancient India, teaches that spiritual sacrifice must be accompanied by milk curds and ghee (clarified butter). Ghee and the cow that produces ghee becomes the very root of spiritual sacrifice. Hindus hold cows sacred because cows are the symbol of everything that is alive. In the same way that Roman Catholics and many other Christians revere Mary as the Mother of God, Hindus revere the cow as the mother of life. To a Hindu, there is no greater sacrilege than harming a cow. Even the taking of a human life lacks the symbolic defilement attached to cow slaughter.

Buddhism.

Like Hinduism, Buddhism also teaches reincarnation, the belief that sentient beings are subject to rebirth as other sentient beings and that consciousness cannot be killed. The interconnectedness of all living organisms is an important precept of the faith. The first of the Five Precepts, the foundation of Buddhist ethical conduct, is not to harm sentient beings.

The relationship between humans and animals is evident in the literature, folklore, and practices of cultures around the world and through the centuries. Yet ambiguity and inconsistency often characterize this relationship. We love our pets and we depend on our domestic animals for food and valuable products, yet we sometimes mistreat our pets and we have almost completely separated ourselves from domestic animals.
