Below I would like to show to You a rough, compositional sketch of the scene I want to finish. It's titled Good Morning, and I am trying to figure out how to create an atmosphere and a mood for sunrise and a kind of magic. I also did some experiments with Gamut Masking about which I've read in James Gurney's book. Gamut idea is very interesting but it needs a lot of practice. Afterall I need a lot of practice with color, which I can feel, I suppose but I have to organize a knowledge [theoretical and practical] to be more confident and clear using it.

The day before an autumn

Below are some tests in composing harmonious palette in painting. These are small quick paintings around 10 minutes each, and I was mostly focused on colors. I was looking for informations about harmonious palettes on the blog by great Mr Howard Lyon - Building Harmonious Color.
I am always struggling while composing palettes. Trying to be original is not the best way to do it, because there is always too much colors then... So I am looking always for great information about color.

Plein Air update...

Got a break from work and I went for Plein-Air. Nice place in Polish land of lakes in Harsz. I also met some great painters there. Well, now I will be going for a smaller weekend painting sessions and will be waiting for another opportunity like this.

All of the images are done with soft pastel, only the last one is done with Oils Paint.

Hello,

not too much time for a post, but I would like to update a blog and write about something.

First, I've started to work in an animation studio as an animator. Right now I am working on a hand-drawn animated project.

Another thing connected with this post is; in a workplace we had a guest lecturer, a great concept artist from Poland [afterall, known worldwide : )] - Marcin Jakubowski.

He introduced us to some of His useful techniques in cartoon style design as well as in some of a color practice excercises.

...by a book by T.H. White I decided to make a personal cover for the e-book version of this title that I have.

I read a first part - The Sword in the Stone [which is this, that inspired Disneys to make their animated interpretation of a title] a little time ago. But I am still fascinated by the great atmosphere beyond the words.

I recommend to all of You to read it, it's a great book!

Hi there!

I am still working on my diploma animated short. Right now I have a lot of animated material, so maybe I'll upload some of this stuff soon.

Because of the fact I did mention above, there is not enough time and occassions to try to develop a skill in painting while painting... 'cos there is no time to paint just like that.

I hope I will paint some plain-air things between July - September and will draw something from life because I am starving and 'am thirsty of that kind of stuff!

Right now I would like to show to You some digital painting that I did in the meantime of doing a movie.

Here are illustrations I did for the publisher but he didn't like the stylisation of characters, calling them - 'too fantasies''.

So I would like to show You what I did in October.

Hello in 2014, ekhm, I am a little late I suppose...!

I hope You all, dear visitors doing well. There is a reason why there is a lot of lack in my posting. Well one of them is that I am looking for myself in this whole 'artsy' world. I am trying not to look too much on the work of other because it came to a drastic thing I feel... I am then, not thinking myself but trying to draw like I think - it should be [read it as - like the others]. Ok I like the way, other people draw but I hate when I lost a confidence and patience and what's the worst of all I do not analyze the other works but remembering and watching their works like a fool, without thinking but absorbing.

The other thing is, that I had a little freelance job, and I am also trying to work on my animation short [short is not a proper word for it... a 14 minutes hand drawn animation, a thriller with acting and all those things... God...] but it is. Well I like the project, but can not organize my workflow yet... But I will work that out. I have to.

Oh, I have to draw more from life... I would like to go more to the ZOO, watch animals living and draw them, make a landscape notes... ummmIam just thinking, loud.

Yes I didn't drew too much from life last months (!) I have a kind of a block and I don't feel like other around-walking-people looking over my arm into a sketchbook. Here it is - I've lost selfconfidence.

Ok not to write so much now but to show something.

Let begin!

Here, above the random illustrations for moodboard I did just for fun. No story, more improvisation. Fun with color, light, atmosphere, composition.

I did also read an excerpts of the Euripides - 'Tragedies' [I am a silent lover of the antic art and literature] and having in mind the 'Oddysey' by Homer and 'Mythology' by Jan Parandowski I did those little sketches of a Cyclops and Oddyseus. Well, I just love sketching, mostly.

I am also a fan of the HBO series - 'True Detective'. Matthew McConnaughey [Jeez, this surname must be connected with the HOPI religion I have a mind for surnames but for this one, I always have to look at first to write it properly] so Matt McConnaughey role is awesome, I connected Him with a silly romantic comedies until now. Here - my man!

Recently I am drawing tigers, because I am working from time to time on my own graphic reinterpretation of 'Life of Pi' just for the portfolio. I love the visuals of the movie and the feeling. It's a nice feature. Some kind of a fairy tale in our busy, ugly times. A place for the rest and I feel a lot of passion out of this movie. By the way, I was very impressed by the opening scene with a titles and the 3D effect. It was so elegant and easy going with a music. Just like a painting done very carefully with mastery and a passion.

In school I have a 'Stop Motion Class' that I chose to learn something about, especially because that a teacher knows what is talking about, and is active in the industry and I like her critics about the projects we have to make. Here is a character design of a face of a Blacksmith. There is no story behind it [in structural meaning]. It's a loose adaptation of a poem by Leopold Staff - 'A blacksmith'. Just a source material for idea. If there will be a possibility to make a puppet and animate it would be great. Because there is no script it would just be a great material for a stop-motion puppet animation tests.

Here are some of a life sketches of my Girlfriend I did. I love to sketch from life I need to do more of them. From time to time I am trying to have more fun and draw a little different a try to exagerate features of a body, pose etc. The way to draw, I love most is to draw with spontaneity. I am working on it.

Talked about a few freelance jobs I took, I can show only one. Above is an illustration done for a Polish children magazine - Świerszczyk. For a new year.

I hope You are not bored, because I still have something to show You.

Sequence from a short - Protagonist's Dream - it also presents the idea of a story of a whole movie. It is in a totally different style done. I tried to imitate a StainGlass work. But I still need to work on it a little bit.

Well, there is a lot of trees and forests in my paintings... Hmm I think, the reason for this is, that my Love bought me the wonderful artbook, which is - 'The Art of Epic'. : )

So I must be inspired. By the way in my diploma short animation, there will be a lot of trees... So I have to practice.

The Un-Divine Comedy

I am not posting too much of my work last time. I have some sketches and drawings but mostly to a diploma short animation I am working on now.

I decided to post something I did in this week, but not exactly as just a final work itself but with a short note on the process behind the work.

So I hope You will enjoy this post. : )

First of all that was the school assignment. My job was to interpret the ending of the Polish, Krasinski's drama - "The Un-Divine Comedy".

I'd focused on the fall of the protagonist. I also decided to make it a poster because I like the 'one image storytelling' very much. I am also a very big enthusiast of the Polish Poster School [in the meaning as phenomenon not institution].

The first idea was to link with a 'polish poster school' and the way they make the form synthesized and making an object a sign. But I abandoned that idea because I am not able yet, to reduce objects this way and to the final stage I woul be happy with.

I decided to do this just as I feel it in myself and, as I want to do it.

So my concept was - make it simple in the meaning of composition, make it rich in the meaning of used media/plasticity and at least or more foremost - place the story in it.

I started then with a preliminar sketches. I have to say that I had first few ideas, but also I knew which one was most appealing to me and I drew this - and as I thought, it was appealing, even on the paper. : )

Below, on the image You can see the idea I chose, it is the one marked with a red rectangle. I knew, what objects I want to place in the image but, at the composition stage I didn't think about them in the meaning of form, but abstract shapes that are the positive area in the whole image. I wanted a lot of a negative, clear area.

Talking about the objects I wanted to place in the illustration that was - a Tower and a Falling Man and the concept was, to make a MAN as a key point in the final image.

You can also see, that I did a little sketch of the typography I wanted to use. Here, too, I wanted to keep it simple. I closed the letters in the form of rectangles - they are also solid this way in the form, they bring a tower [in my concept] on mind. I had the design of the 'typos' in the overall idea of the image in my head at the beginning. I thought about them that I want to make them as solid as the Bauhaus typography is.

I also tried another composition here and tried the way I would like to render a Tower that will appear in the final image. For this, I looked in, to the album I have in my little collection of art books. The one I picked for this project was - "GROTTGER" which contains his series of pannels, his notable work.

Ok. Going back to the process.

When the composition was done for me, I challeged with a figure of a MAN, a silhouette that represents a falling man. Image below shows that I was struggling with few ideas. I wanted to make his whole body, clearly visible. I tried in sketches some lines of the more embryonic poses or the one suggesting the shape of the comet, but I knew, how small it will be in the final image, so the context might be destroyed.

I decied to chose the one that is more theatrical BUT clear and also dynamic. It is the one marked with red rectangle on the image below.

Next step for me was, to make the sketch - silhouette. Image below translate this, I traced the sketch on the new sheet of paper. I did it this way because, sometimes it's easy to destroy the most dynamic lines of the most emotional sketch. In this case, choosen sketch had a life in lines for me.

On the image above You can see I added new things to the silhouette. A long material, a kind of a cape or a scarf and a sabre but for me sabre was too much.

So, below the image shows another step where I tried variation with horizontal difference between silhouettes.

I scanned the drawing of the silhouette. Flipped it horizontal and changed the line of action, and place of cape/scarf.

The reason for this, is in the composition and wrong drawing of a silhouette. Calling wrong, I mean here - positioning HIS directional LEFT arm, hand nad HIS, RIGHT leg, foot in the opposite direction to a TOWER, that will appear in the final image.

This change, led me to placing a cape/scarf on the LEFT side of HIS body.

What I achieved by this?

It will be clear while looking at the final image but, I achieved that - [now, after changes] cape/scarf has a line of action directing, indicating the eye in the direction to the top of the tower [which is for me and might be for the viewer] the point from where a Man had jumped off [a 'key' point]. In indicating this point as the earlier 'key point', helps also another curve, now in the body of a man[silhouette] which is HIS, LEFT leg, foot.

Now HIS, RIGHT arm, hand indicate, direct to desination where a Man is falling down.

Ok, after writing down my thoughts on the composing the image, changing silhouette etc., came time to finally show the final image - a POSTER itself.

Above You can see the final image. Talking about the media I used, it was the ink in pens - Sakura Pen-Touch, Pentel Brush Pen, pens Sakura different sizes from 0.5 to 0.05, lithographic crayons from Charbonnel soft and hard, charcoal and pencil.

Summing it all...

Well, I am happy with the image how it turned out. I didn't achieve all of the assumptions, I mean that in composition sketch the falling man was a focal point or a golden point. I think I did a top of a tower too heavy, and that's the reason why I toned the top of the image but I think to also enriched the whole picture. Although it didn't help as much as I wanted to concentrate the eye of the viewer on silhouette of the falling man.

Being closer to the idea than not, I am happy with the overall look of the image.
