Me

OMG! I just recently said that I need to start with my fitness regimen but I slacked again. My gym should definitely fine me for not attending any class more so for not visiting at all. I am in a slump. I don't know. I don't have any motivation at all.

I guess I need a little more motivation to get this exercise and diet regimen back and in full swing. In the meantime, I will just have to see how I can motivate myself.

I'm a mess...I feel like a big ball of fat now. Arrrrgh! What do you all do when you feel like this? Tell me. Motivate me. Share. Please?

Ah, I am such a slacker sometimes. Well not really. It's just that I have prioritized the other blogs that I have been maintaining especially the ones that earns me the big bucks. Anyway, I will try to keep this blog more updated moving forward. After all, I am back to running again and I have some new running buddies.

I will make this short and sweet for now. I will be back tomorrow for updates on the races that I will be joining next year.

I joined the Rock and Run last Saturday and all the runners were soaked in rainwater upon crossing the finish line. It was an unforgettable experience for me as it was the first run I joined where the rain poured. That incident prompted me to check on rain gears and the like as the rainy season has finally checked in. I didn't want to be caught up again running under the rain with just my regular running clothes on. That incident also brought back memories when I used to run with just my knickers on when I was little. LOL! All for the sake of fun...

When I started running outdoors, I started hating the bore that is to run indoors. I now loathe the thought of running on a treadmill. I would like to feel the wind against my face and not feel the blasting AC. As I read up on essential gears and I am sharing them all to you now:

1. Dress in Layers if It's Cold

If it's very cold and rainy, you may need to wear a couple of layers. The most important layer is the one closest to your body. Make sure it's a technical fabric such as polypropylene or CoolMax, which wick water and sweat away from your skin. Your outer layer should be a wind- and water-resistant jacket or vest. Don't wear a waterproof rain slicker because it will trap moisture and heat.

2. Wear a Hat

A hat with a brim can be your best friend during a rainy run. It will keep the rain off your face.

3. Don't Overdress

This is one the biggest mistakes runners make when heading out for a rainy run. Wearing more layers will not keep you dry. Unless you're running with an umbrella over your head, you will definitely get wet. If you have tons of layers on, you will just be wearing more wet, heavy clothes. Dress for the temperature, as if it were a dry day.

4. Be Visible

Select an outer layer that's light-colored or has reflective strips, since running in the rain often means poor visibility.

5. Prevent Chafing

If you're running long, spread Body Glide or Vaseline on parts of your body where you would normally chafe or get blisters -- such as your feet, inner thighs, underarms, sports bra lines (women), and nipples (men).

6. Just Run!

The hardest part of running in the rain is often just getting started. Once you begin running and warm up, you may find that you actually enjoy it! And it's good preparation in case you ever have to run a race in the rain.

7. Dry Out Your Shoes

When you get back from a wet run, take off your running shoes and stuff them with crumpled balls of newspaper. This helps the shoes keep their shape, and the paper draws moisture away from the shoes.

Although I enjoyed my first real run in the rain, I did not come prepared. I endured chafing on my underarm and now it is healing. I was able to put cocoa moisturizer in between my thighs so it was safe. I sure know better what to do next time. Thank you to Christine Luff for the aforementioned tips.

Wow! It's been long since I last updated this blog. I am sorry for not writing anything here for more than a month. I will promise to start fresh and keep y'all posted again. I had a bout with a medical condition and even without doctor's affirmation I can say that I am all well now. I need to visit a pulmonologist for another spirometry just to really make sure and put my worried mom at ease.

Well, summer kicked all our asses to the curb by coming too early, well, at least the heat did. The summer heat started scorching Manila sometime February and it hasn't waned yet except for the occasional rainshowers that barely even wet the ground (just enough to make the city a lot more humid). And yes, beach season is already here and there is no turning back.

I haven't started mine yet. In fact, mine will start when summer is over. I don't think I am going to brave the beaches with this kind of heat/temperature. I am not going to put the money I spent on my skin for treatments down the drain. The most summery act I did was to get a bikini wax just in case a sudden night swimming season will spur. Oh yeah, night swimming it is (or maybe super early in the morning).

To those who are not scared to brave the blaring heat of the sun, make sure you have ample sun protection. Do not scrimp, lather it all on generously. Anyway, here are some of the best sunscreen lotions and moisturizers and lip product that I have already tried in the past.

1. Nivea Sun Refreshing Fluid Protect SPF30 - you can use this as makeup base to help control overactive oil glands. Double whammy!

2. Hawaiian Tropic Ozone Sport Sunblock Lotion SPF60 - this is developed especially for sports enthusiasts, this does not run as well so it's safe to use even on your face because it won't migrate to your eyes.

3. Coppertone Sport Sunblock Spray SPF30 - this does not clog the pores and very much recommended for prolonged exposure under the sun (don't forget to touch up though). Another plus is that this is oil-free.

4. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF55 - since this is water-based expect that this is the most convenient and easiest product to apply, even the hard to reach areas can be targeted with ease.

5. Burt's Bees Replenishing Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil - your lips need protection too

Writing this made me so excited to just take the plunge and enjoy the summer heat but reason tells me to wait and exercise a pinch of caution. But of course, an ounce of prevention is still better than a pound of cure. So, indulge in the summer madness with extreme caution and yes, don't forget the sunscreen.

The event went great and was hosted by Rico Robles. It was fun watching the "runners" outrun each other during the treadmill challenge. I wanted to join but when I saw who else joined, I chickened out. Anyway, read further so you will get acquainted about the product too.

The Adidas miCoach is an interactive training system that guides a runner to either speed up or slow down by tracking heart rate, pace, distance, and stride rate. Every runner is different, every heart is unique. Your heart rate indicates your level of effort during exercise. miCoach helps you stay within four heart rate zones so that you get the most out of each run.

And yes, you can choose your coach. If you're a female, you can choose a male coach or if you're a male, you can choose a female coach. This option is completely within your control. As you workout, miCoach will let you know which training zone you’re in—audibly if you’re using miCoach Pacer or visually if you’re using miCoach Zone. They are just an amazing combo to eat and it was a eureka moment for me when I discovered this what seemed to me as the perfect pair if you are too lazy to whip up a decent meal using the best kitchen ware and table ware that you own. Of course, when I say best, those are the kind you keep inside your cupboard (ahhh, typical Filipino household). Kidding aside, you may be wondering how I discovered this "cheap eat" to give a full happy tummy.

I was on my rest day and all the flat wares at home are on the sink waiting to be washed by the diligent soul in me, but I digress. The lazy has overpowered me and wanted to indulge so I would rather go online and scour through websites offering same day delivery for flat wares (which is remotely impossible). Fail! So, hungry as I am, I used the only pot available and the wooden spoon (the big one) to reheat the tuna and be my food. Ah and I feel I should tell you this, I actually do not like using the can opener when opening up canned products. I would much rather prefer to use the purple knife. It's just one of my skills to open a can with utmost precision and control with a knife (thanks to Girl Scout camping and cookouts). And so after reheating the tuna, I flopped myself in the couch, powered the TV on and munched on the crackers to my content. It was so flavorful (I couldn't possibly name the spices that were used, I am no spice connoisseur). Even then, I have a whole army of spice containers at home (sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano among others).

After eating the whole bowl of tuna and two packs of crackers, I suddenly had the conviction to clean my mess; kitchen ware and flatware and pots and pans. Maybe that's what a happy tummy can do to you. It could give you a sudden jolt to act like a grown-up and look after yourself. Maybe then I would try to whip this combo up when I am feeling lazy and see if it will make me do household chores yet again...

In the meantime, I have another wish...a free five year supply of spices! Here are 10 successful strategies to cut calories and burn fat that literally take 60 seconds or less.

1. Mix a juice spritzer

Combine your favorite juice (half of your usual amount) with plain or sparkling water. You can cut up to 85 calories per glass--and lose 5 pounds or more a year. - I love doing this with lemon slices and water. It makes water less boring and juice less sweet.

2. Walk while you talk

Burn calories while you talk on the phone: Do the laundry (68 calories), set the table (85), or water plants (102). - Ahhhh the magic of walking...

3. Study the wrapper

At a quick glance, that candy bar appears to contain 220 calories. But a closer look may reveal that it (or a bottle of juice, bag of crackers, or bag of nuts) provides two or more servings--which more than doubles those calories. - Yes, you really should not lose that keen eye and investigate before popping that little candy inside your mouth.

4. Sip green tea before a walk

The caffeine frees fatty acids so that you burn fat more easily. And the polyphenols (antioxidant compounds) in green tea appear to work with caffeine to increase calorie burn. (If you have high blood pressure, skip this tip.) This I should and will do.

5. Pack a lunch

Dining out more than 5 times a week may make you eat more--nearly 300 calories a day--than if you dine out less frequently. - I need to pack lunch as well but my schedule all screws up the plans. I should try to get over any excuses I have and do this plus I'm sure I'll save a few hundred pesos at the end of the day.

6. Dip your bread

Use olive oil in place of butter. It's healthier and may also help you eat less. In a recent study, dippers ate a total of 52 fewer calories, on average, than those who used butter. - That's why Italian restaurants do this. You can add a few sliced basil to make your dip more interesting.

7. Sprinkle flax on cereal

High-fiber ground flaxseed can help curb your appetite and eliminate calories. Add it to yogurt or muffin and bread mixes--it's available in health food stores. - My oatmeal has this so I think I am on the safe zone.

8. Schedule a blood test

About 1 in every 12 women (most of whom don't know it) has an underactive thyroid, which can slow down her metabolism. - I have this penciled in.

9. Supersize your H2O

Buy the big bottle when it comes to good-for-you stuff such as water: You'll drink more. - I make it a point that I drink at least a liter of water at work and then 2 glasses as soon as I wake and before I go to bed.

10. Eat a chunky salad

Chop carrots, celery, sweet potatoes, zucchini, or other veggies instead of shredding or slicing. It takes more effort to munch bigger pieces; you'll do more chewing and eat less during the main course. - Yeah, chew, chew and chew.

Les Mills Body Vive

I got a free Les Mills Body Vive VCD in a box of Nestle Fitnesse Whole Wheat Cereal and this will be used for my challenge for the week. I hope I won't be too lazy.

I am off to run now and before I head out, I had oats and grapes and a little piece of chocolate for breakfast.

How To Treat Blisters

If the tips I posted about preventing blisters did not work for you at all, here are some steps you can try to properly and safely treat them pesky watery blisters to avoid any infection.

1. If the blister has not torn and is full of liquid, pierce it from the side with a sterile needle at its base. Let all the fluid run out. - Make sure the needle is sterile. You may opt to wash it with isopropyl antibacterial alcohol.

2. If the blister has torn already, carefully cut away the loose skin of the blister and treat the area with antiseptic. - Make sure your scissors is also sterile. You don't want any bacteria to get in your open wound.

3. Allow the blister to dry and harden in the open air for as long as you can. - Let it breathe and let your body's healing power do its magic.

4. When you need to resume hiking, put a bandaid or gauze over a torn blister. - Make sure the bandaid or gauze is in place but not too tight.

5. Put a layer of moleskin over the blister area. You may cut a doughnut shaped piece of moleskin that fits around the blister rather than directly on it. - Yeah donut has a hole in the middle so you can probably picture out how the moleskin will look.

6. Keep it clean and sterilized to prevent infection. - I put hydrogen peroxide as such acts as antiseptic and disinfectant to the wound to clean it at the end of the day.

7. If blister does not heal in two-three days, consult your doctor.

Let me know if these work for you. If you have other ways to treat a blister, please feel free to share.

Pinay In Action 2010

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oZy-NzoG5UE/S4Ia8sCuvYI/AAAAAAAACdg/yajA_MWARGA/s400/PIA.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440940929734065538" />
I did not register for the Unilab Run for Wellness and since I plan to train again in preparation for Globe Run For Home 2010 I will be joining this run organized by Senator Pia Cayetano. This blog came into being to chronicle my journey to achieving my personal fitness goals and to share results if any. I do not claim to be a fitness guru or anything. Always remember that what may work for me, may not work for you so if ever what I have done excites you and you want to do it, do so at your own risk.

It is summer once again and no one can deny that. The sun's rays pierces through one's skin and it has a different sting lately. I haven't planned any summer getaway yet but I have planned some activities that would make me summer getaway ready. And oh, I have stocked up on SPF-laden products already.

The night before the Century Tuna Superbods Run 2010, I renewed my love affair with cereals. I admit I have stopped dieting and gave in to any form and shape of craving after the breakup (well you can call it that even if there was no real breakup conversation that happened) although I still run despite keeping myself busy but not as often as I did a couple of months back. I had Kellogg's Mueslix and banana with low-fat milk for dinner. I was so full after finishing the bowl so I watched TV before heading to bed.

A bowl full of goodness (fruit, grains, wheat, bran)

When I woke up on race day, I immediately consumed about 500ml of water and then drank Gatorade on my way to the race. I also ate a banana before I headed out of the house. I felt that was enough to fuel me to finish my run. I was all along thinking that I need to hydrate this time (big mistake for the Condura Run because I felt so dehydrated). I packed a chocolate bar with almond nuts, a banana and another bottle of Gatorade and took it with me in case I'll feel hungry after the run. It was a good decision on my part. I however did not eat the chocolate bar as the race organizers distributed some snack packs. Awesome! I, however, only ate the banana and tuna salad as I was not feeling so hungry at all.

I went home feeling fine and with no injury. I ate half of the tuna bun and tuna pocket. It was enough to refuel my body after the 5K run and the 3K walk I had to do after. Unlike my last run, I feel so fine today and my legs are A-OK. I guess the Bangkok foot massage I had the night before the race helped tons. Thank heavens!

Since Century Corned Tuna was on sale at the race venue, I bought a few cans and ate one for dinner. I have never tried thank goodness and I pray I would have blister-free running all my life (I do get blisters in stilettos though). Everyone knows what a blister looks like I suppose and everyone at some point in their lives have tried and felt the uncomfortable feeling this wee little bump brings. Blisters are small swelling of the skin that contains watery fluid. They are caused by friction. The body responds to the friction by producing fluid. The fluid builds up beneath the part of the skin being rubbed, causing pressure and pain.

PHOTO CREDIT: Mattias Bramstång Long Distance Runner

Blisters occur when feet get hot, sweaty and socks stick to the feet. Fluid fills up a space between layers of skin to protect the area, like a small balloon. That's how a blister forms. Blisters are a common problem with athletes wearing in new shoes. They are also a common problem for athletes, runners and walkers who participate in exceptionally long events such as marathons or long hill walks.

If at all this helps, what keeps me blister-free is this unfashionable practice but it is such a live-saver. I cut a strip of Moleskin (nope the notebook) adhesive strip and then put it in blister-prone areas of my foot and then seal it with a strip of electrical tape. I usually use Dr. Scholl's Moleskin Plus Padding. It is soft and smooth cotton flannel padding and yes, it cuts to size (very convenient). It can be bought in regular as well as specialty drugstores. It has always worked for me and I am sure it will work for you too.

Of course, there are some other ways to prevent blisters:

Wear shoes that fit properly.

Keep feet as dry as possible.

Wearing wet shoes, boots and socks will increase your chance of developing blisters.

Change socks regularly.

Use foot powder to help keep your feet dry.

Do you have a blister story? Have you tried running with blisters on your foot?

Always remember to keep your feet happy and cared for. You will get more mileage with a happy pair of feet.

NOTE: This post does not aim to endorse any product and is not a paid post. The group started growing and by January we have already decided to join a race scheduled for the month of February. Everyone was excited. Some even bought new shoes, some just planned to use the shoes they used to train on race day. I got several commitments to join until one day I received an email from one of my office mates, Rogelio Jose whom we fondly call Rojo, and he told me that he will not be joining anymore because he has given away his one and only pair of running shoes to someone who needs it more than he do. He gave it to an Ondoy victim who had just been using a mangled pair of flip flops since their house and all their properties were submerged in floodwater.

I was sad that he would not be able to join us but I was overwhelmed because of what he had to do. I knew he really wanted to join us but he made the sacrifice so that someones feet can rest comfortably in the cushion of a blue Diadora shoes. To rest comfortably might be an understatement even as it could have felt like utter heaven to the homeless Ondoy victim when he finally slid his feet inside and tied the shoelaces up.

Here is the picture of the shoes taken from the Diadora website (I was not able to ask a picture of the real shoes):

His story might seem so simple, forgettable, scant even but the simplicity of the story and my friends' noble reason to give up something for someones happiness is truly an inspiring story to tell. I was moved and shed a tear when I got home. It was such an altruistic proof of love, such a selfless act. His story made me realize that happiness can be spread and some little acts of goodwill could be a precursor to such. Life is after all giving and sharing.

Truly, the smallest good deed is worth a thousand grand intentions. Oh yes, you read it right. I blogged about my training for the Century Tuna Superbods Run 2010 and entered it in a blog contest and I won. LOL! I am just on a winning streak lately. I was actually expecting to win because I got more than a hundred comments for that blog entry alone and I have inspired some to join too. It's a good feeling when you know that you are influencing other people to choose a healthier lifestyle. I will only be running the 5K route as I just recently joined the Condura Run 2010 and I had delayed onset of muscle soreness after the race. I will be writing an article about DOMS in the next few days. My calves were sore and I had a hard time walking. It was pure pain. I just hope I won't be experiencing that same situation after the race on the 21st.

I am going to run everyday starting tomorrow until Thursday to clinch my final preparations. Wrong. Surprisingly, near the end of your period, your body is actually geared to pegging track workouts and tempo runs. However, your long, slow runs will suffer. Read on to learn how your training and racing is affected by your menstrual cycle.

Energy Level Fluctuation

Your menstrual cycle is composed of three phases. The first phase, generally days one through thirteen (the first three to seven days being menstruation), is called the follicular phase and is marked by relatively low levels of estrogen, except for a spike near day fourteen. The next phase, called ovulation begins on day fourteen. The remainder of the cycle, days fifteen through 28 of the average 28-day cycle, is called the luteal phase and is characterized by moderately high and stable levels of estrogen. Estrogen levels are important because estrogen is the key hormone affecting not only your cycle, but also the type of fuel available for your working muscles. Studies have shown that low levels (in the follicular phase) favor the breakdown of quick energy stores (muscle glycogen) whereas high levels (in the luteal phase) favor fat-burning, lower lactic acid levels and glycogen sparing.

How does this relate to training?

Say you've planned your track workouts for every Wednesday. You go to the track during your follicular phase (low estrogen) and hit all your repeats right on. You leave the track with confidence and excitement. A few weeks later, you go to the track but you're now in the luteal phase (high estrogen). You feel sluggish, tired and lethargic. You feel like you have a totally different body. You leave the track doubting your abilities and your training program, despite the fact that your long runs have been successful. Don't feel discouraged, though. It's not for lack of training that you're performing this way, it's the way your body is fueling your workouts. In the follicular phase you benefit from a quick breakdown of carbohydrates for speed and efficiency. Your body is primed for providing quick energy for fast running In the luteal phase, however, your body is in the fat-breakdown mode – fueling your workout primarily through increased utilization of fat. Since fat is a source of slower, more sustained energy than carbohydrates, your intensity may suffer during the luteal phase. Basically you're trying to run high-octane workouts on low-octane fuel. In other words, during the luteal phase your long, slow runs will feel easier and require less recovery time because your body will take advantage of increased fat breakdown. In the follicular phase your tempo runs and interval training will feel easier because you'll be accessing quick energy through carbohydrates. Of course, this doesn't mean you shouldn't do long-distance workouts in the follicular phase or tempo workouts in the luteal phase. Just keep in mind that faster running may feel harder in the luteal phase, while slower running may feel more difficult in the follicular phase. With this new understanding of your menstrual cycle and the fueling mechanisms that change from phase to phase, don't view your cycle as a training disadvantage but rather a training secret. Use what nature gave you as your ergogenic aid and have confidence in your training. Sorry, men, but maybe estrogen is the wonder hormone after all!

Run The Planet thanks Peak Running Performance for the permission to reprint the article "The Menstrual Cycle and Your Performance" by Stacy Sims, M.S. We were just forgetful enough to bring some hydration and money so we had to go back home earlier than expected. Oh yeah, talking about running and understanding one's cycle, I have my period now. I feel sluggish but as soon as I started running, it felt really good and I felt like I have so much energy to spare. I just need to bring my water bottle tomorrow so I won't abort the run too quickly.

The Book Run 2010

I am still thinking if I will join this... :-) It probably depends on the outcome of my Condura Run.

The Yes Pinoy Foundation and National Bookstore presents The Book Run 2010. Earth, Belle and Wena had their measurements taken and had another photo shoot last month going around the designer stores. I was not able to join them because I was away on vacation. I had my fitting just yesterday (good thing the measurements I sent to Kate Torralba were that accurate) and the Hermes belt hugs my upper hips just perfectly.

The shoot was done at the Parallax Studios in Makati and our make-up was done by Omar Ermita (Shu Uemura), hair was done by Ara Fernando and her assistant and the pictures were shot by Wes Villarica. Our stylist for the shoot, Isha Andaya, was uberfriendly and pretty too. The shoot lasted for a little more than 4 hours. It was tiring but we enjoyed it. And oh, I loved my make-up.
