Most of the battles and wars occurred when the modern area of Bengal was under different empires, especially the Mughal Empire and the British Empire, and the Bengalis served in both the Mughal and the British militaries. Since the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, it has its own military.

Province of Bengal (1576–1717)

In 1576, the Mughal Empire conquered Bengal and turned it into a province of the empire. The Mughal rule continued until 1717, when Mughal Subadar (provincial governor) Murshid Quli Khandeclared the independence of Bengal. During this period, Bengalis served in the Mughal military and took part in many wars undertaken by the Mughals.

Bengal (1717–1765)

In 1717, Murshid Quli Khan, who was the provincial governor of the Mughal province of Bengal, taking advantage of the weakness of the declining Mughal Empire, declared the independence of Bengal and established himself as the Nawab of Bengal. Bengal remained independent until 1764, when the British annexed the region. During this period, Bengal had its own military, and Bengalis served in it.

East Bengal (1947–1955)

In 1947, East Bengal became a province of the newly established state of Pakistan and retained this name till 1955. During this period, Bengalis served in the Pakistani military and took part in various conflicts involving Pakistan.

East Pakistan (1955–1971)

East Bengal was renamed East Pakistan in 1955, and it became one of the two units of Pakistan under the Pakistani policy of 'One Unit'. East Pakistan remained a part of Pakistan till 1971. During this period, Bengalis continued to serve in the Pakistani military and took part in the wars in which Pakistan participated during this period.

The state has just undergone an election that saw the reinstatement of the Trinamool Congress as the ruling party on Thursday, May 19.

Prehistoric Bengal:

Stone Age remnants have been found in Bengal that dates back 20,000 years. The indigenous population Bengal consists of tribes and of Austric and Austro-Asiatic origins such as Kola, Bhil, Santhal, Shabara, and Pulinda.

Ancient Bengal:

Bengal is a 4,000-year-old civilization that thrived between the banks of Ganges to the Brahmaputra and sustained itself with the riches of Gangetic Delta.

Remnants of earliest cities in the state date back to the Vedic Period. The oldest archaeological site in Bangladesh is Mahasthangarh, which dates back to 700 BCE. The culture and ethnicity of Bengal were different than that of the Vedic people. The latter referred to the people of Bengal as 'dasyus' or demons.

The Retreat of Alexander:

Greek traveler and chronicler Megasthenes referred to Bengal as Gangaridai in his book Indica (300 BC). When Alexander invaded India and defeated Porus, he wanted to conquer all of India and moved eastward where he came to know about the mighty forces of the Gangaridai warriors.

Alexander read accounts of Gangetic Delta written by Ptolemy and Diodorus. Greek historian Diodorus Siculus (90 BC -30 BC) depicted the Gangaridai warriors in this manner:

"The river is called the Ganges which had a width of thirty-two stadia, and a greater depth than any other Indian river. Beyond this again were situated the dominions of the nation of the Prasioi and the Gandaridai, whose king, Xandrammes, had an army of 20,000 horses, 200,000 infantry, 2,000 chariots and 4,000 elephants trained and equipped for war... Now this (Ganges) river, which is 30 stadia broad, flows from north to south, and empties its water into the ocean forming the eastern boundary of the Gandaridai, a nation which possesses the greatest number of elephants and the largest in size."

Arguably, it was the might of the Gangaridai warriors that made Alexander retreat.

Bengal has always been the gateway to the eastern parts of the Indian subcontinent. It is the shortest and easiest route from the Bay of Bengal to the Himalayas. Such a geographical advantage made Bengal a commercial hub that connected the sea to the famous Silk Route.

Mention in Mahabharata:

The Mahabharata mentions Bengali kings Chitrasena and Sandra Sena, who were defeated by Pandav king Bhima. It also talks about a folklore that Bhima was injured by a poisoned arrow and he came to the southernmost parts of Bengal, called Palatal, to heal. The southernmost parts of Bengal indicate towards the mangrove lands of the Sundarbans.

In a significant development of events, a third-century civilization has been recently discovered beneath the surface of Gobardhanpur in Pathar Pratima Block, Sundarbans. The place has remnants of cauldrons and pots that would have been used to make herbal medicines.

The answer is simple. The Bengal rulers have always paid attention to naval expansion. Trade links among Bengal, Java, Sumatra, and Siam (now Thailand) can be traced even now.

According to Mahavamsa, the chronicle of Sri Lanka, the Bengal prince Vijaya Simha conquered Lanka (modern day Sri Lanka) in 544 BC and coined the name 'Sinhala'.

The Empires in Bengal:

Maurya Dynasty (324 BC - 185 BC)

Chandragupta Maurya unified all Indian provinces, except the North-East, Tamil, and Kalinga. His empire spanned from Bengal to Baluchistan. During his reign, Bengal flourished with riches and its naval fleet got stronger.

Gauda Empire (590 CE - 626 CE)

After the Mauryan Empire, other kingdoms and dynasties such as the Gupta, Kanvas, Shungas, and the Mahameghavahanas ascended to the throne of Bengal. But it was during the rule of King Shashanka that Bengal witnessed another flourishing period. Shashank was a strong ruler who developed Bengal's architecture and calendar. He is infamous for oppressing Buddhist communities and driving them out of Bengal. Shashanka's capital, Karna Suvarna is now known as Murshidabad.

Malla Dynasty

What we know as Bankura, a western district in modern-day West Bengal was once known as Mallabhum, the land of the Mallas. The Malla kings ruled the western provinces of Bengal from the seventh century and their dynasty can be traced to this date. Their last king Kalipada Singha Thakur became the king of Mallabhum in 1930 and 'ruled' till his death in 1983.

Pala Empire (750 CE - 1200 CE)

Often dubbed as the 'Golden Age' of Bengal, the Pala Empire indeed raised the standards of Bengal's culture and politics. Followers of Buddhist philosophy, the Pala kings promoted classical Indian philosophy, literature, painting and sculpture studies. It was during this period that the Bengali language was formed in its entirety. Epics and sagas were written such as the 'Mangal Kavyas'. The Palas were also known for their war elephant cavalry and strong naval fleet.

Medieval Bengal:

The medieval history of India, including Bengal, is that of Sultanates, invasions, plunder, cultural reform and architectural genius.

Sultanates:

Islamic rulers under the banners of Khilji Dynasty (1200 CE - 1230 CE), the Mamluk Sultanate (1227 CE - 1281 CE), the Tughlaq Sultanate (1324 CE - 1339 CE), the kingdom of Ilyas Shahi (1435 - 1487), the Suri Empire (1532 - 1555) were primarily looters. Governance was at stake and the socio-political integrity of Bengal was under severe crisis.

Mughal Subahdars:

Districts or Subahs were distributed among the allies and commandants of the Mughal Empire. Mughal emperors such as Akbar, Jahangir and Aurangzeb placed high regard for the Bengal province and were also aware of the riches this region had to offer.

The Nawab link:

Murshid Quli Khan alias Ala Ud-Daulah was the last Mughal Subahdar of Bengal under the reign of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah I. Born a Hindu Brahmin in Deccan India, Murshid took the throne as the Nawab of Bengal. He renamed the region of Shashanka's Karna Suvarna as Murshidabad.

Koch Dynasty (1515 - 1949)

The princely state of Cooch Behar was included in the political map of Bengal after Independence. Earlier, the northern region of Bengal was ruled by the Koch Dynasty. The famous palace of the Koch kings still stands in Cooch Behar City.

The Maratha Invasion:

During the political turmoil after the death of Murshid Quli Khan in the 18th century, the Maratha Empire decided to invade Bengal. Led by Maratha Maharaja Raghuji of Nagpur, the Maratha force was able to capture parts of Odisha and Bengal but failed to get a hold of the entire province. The term 'Bargi', which refers to Maratha plunderers, is still a common term used in West Bengal (It's even used in a lullaby!).

Plassey and the British:

Being a gateway to India, a strong naval presence, a land full of riches and a weak ministerial cabinet -- to answer the question on how the British invaded India, one should fall back on these four factors.

The Battle of Plassey (June 1757), which allowed the British to consolidate their hold in Bengal as rulers, was only the curtain fall on a plot of a catastrophic betrayal.

Mirza Muhammad Siraj Ud-Daulah, who was the last independent Nawab of Bengal, gave the British a commercial license to buy muslins and jute from Bengal. The British manipulated Siraj's ministers and bribed them to stand against the Nawab.

Siraj was betrayed by his trusted ally Mir Jafar and others ministers. He lost the Battle of Plassey and Bengal lost itself to the western colonizers.

British Bengal:

The Fort William in Calcutta (now Kolkata) was the first British stronghold in India. Although Siraj was able to capture it, after his death, the British rebuilt it and made it into a fortified, cannon-fitted military base.

After the fall of Mughal Empire, the focus of Indian culture and politics shifted from Delhi to Calcutta. The city gradually became the capital of British India. It remained so until 1911.

Bengal has seen two catastrophic famines in 1776 and 1942 and two partitions in 1905 and 1947 under the British Raj. The province endured three migrations in 1905, 1947 and 1971. Apart from the governance, the British Raj spelled doom for the native population of Bengal.

Undivided Bengal

Due to the first-hand interaction and intimacy with the colonizers, the Bengali community became the most advanced in modern science and literature, which gave rise to the Bengal Renaissance.

Bengal Renaissance:

The Bengal Renaissance saw the rise of extraordinary personalities and visionaries from the Bengal province in the 19th and 20th century. Free thinking was encouraged among students, caste discrimination was condemned, and literature and science were seen as the agents of progress.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the 'Father of modern India', was the pioneer of the Renaissance. Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Swami Vivekananda, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, Satyendra Nath Bose, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Rabindranath Tagore propelled the movement forward and made Bengal the face of progress and culture in India.

Freedom Movement:

Bengal played a pivotal role in the Indian freedom movement. Revolutionary units such as Anushilan Samiti and Jugantar gathered the youths of Bengal and trained them to fight against the foreign rulers.

Many proponents of the Indian freedom struggle hailed from Bengal, including Chittaranjan Das, Surendranath Banerjea, Prafulla Chaki, Jatindranath Mukherjee, Khudiram Bose, Surya Sen, Binoy Basu, Badal Gupta, Dinesh Gupta, Matangini Hajra, Sarojini Naidu, Aurobindo Ghosh, Rashbehari Bose, Shyamaprasad Mukherjee and many more.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the face of Indian armed freedom struggle, was fostered in Bengal like many other Indian freedom fighters. The walls of the Cellular Jail in Andaman stand witness to the sacrifice of Bengali youths, as the highest number of jailed revolutionaries came from Bengal.

Post-Independence Bengal:

While the onus of Indian politics became more and more northwestern, the fact that Bengal faced two back-to-back partitions and migrations in 1947 and 1971 did not attract adequate administrative attention. The Bangladesh Liberation War sparked ire among the youths of Bengal.

A historic occasion was missed. Why? A young scholar, Ms Joya Chatterji, has given us the answer. She. writes:

By the early 1930s the Bengal Congress had become a party of the towns but one that still retained its connection with landed interest... The politics of the Bengal Congress reflected the social conservatism of its predominantly only gentleman's membership. Even after the party retreated to the towns in the late 1920s, its leaders had kept intact their commitment to their landed interests in the mofussil which they had left behind but had not abandoned.

In fact, the Bengal Congress was far from being united: the moderates followed closely the 'high command' and were often in tune with the Hindu Mahasabha, whereas the left- wing – led by the Bose brothers – tried to impose a socialist and secular line. This brought conflict between the two factions, which was to develop later into a full-scale battle for the unity of Bengal.

They also made the flag of our nation Bangladesh.founding member & prominent Chatro Ligue student lieder of Dhaka college Abdul Jalil Choudhury later worked as a librations war & political organiser of Bangladesh war of Independence In 1971 worked along with freedom fighter Commandant Manik Choudhury MLA,

A revolutionary foot soldiers of Shadin Bangla nucleus movement the late Abdul Jalil Choudhury he was also well known with his nickname Shamim he was one of The Leaders & a foot soldier who witnesses & participated on our nations very great national political events throughout to our war of independence.as he was contemporary student lieder & fellow comrade to Shirajul Alom Khan, Abdur Razzaq ,Tofiyel Ahmed ,Shajahan Shiraj & many more of the Young Turks of Bengal :

Above a picture of the Late Abdul Jalil Choudhury the Senior most Planter of National Tea Company, the founding member of Shadin Bangla Nucleolus movement. He was one of the student lieder from Dhaka College Chatro Ligue(Of H.S.Shrawardi's fraction of Abdur Rajjaq Committee In 1962 A.D.). He was a prominent Lieder Chatro Ligue of Chittagong collage & founder of cumulla Vitoria college Chatro Ligue he was imprisoned by the regime for lidding the movement & fight against Dictator Ayub Khan regime & west Pakistani oppression over East Bengal. Later in 1971 time of the war of independents, he worked as one of the great organiser's convenors of Bangladesh Liberation war along with Commandant Manikin Chowdhury MNA Awamiligue Sylhet, Habigonj Subdivisions sector Under colonel Abdur Rob. During and after Our Liberation war He was given responsibility & to take charge of the liberated lashkorpur valleys some tea gardens of Habigonj, Mujibnagar Government appointed him In charge to rebuild the war-torn effected tea gardens for his expertise. In wartime, he worked from inside occupied country helping his countrymen in whatever means it was possible to save there life's. He endangered his own life in several occasions encountering Pakistan Army. He was actively an Officer of Mujibnagar Government of the subdivision alongside Awamiligue leaders and helped them with his limited resources as it was his own district & he was local here & he was from a very well known family & with his previous political experience & he was well educated as well he was able to infiltrate the enemy & help our Independence movement and also go along with and helping his fellow leaders & honourable persons of the sub-division to go forth. he engaged with the enemy face to face.saving several life.
Abdul Jalil Chowdhury's father the Late Major Abdul Waheed Chowdhury was the Founding Officer Commanding of the Training coy of 1st East Bengal Regiment in 1947 AD.Commissioned from Dheradun Military academy, Posted as commissioned Officer of British Indian Madras Regiment now 1st Punjab regiment of Pakistan with which he went to fight in Iraq & Iran to fight Nazi Germans in the WW2.WW2 Veteran British Indian Army's Brigade Major or General stuff officer of Pune sub-aria HQ than to Zob Brigades HQ serve Wartime Brigade Major & General Staff Officer to the Commander Brigadier Makel khan Mohammed Kiayna Involved in Burma frontier war against Japanese invasion approx 1941-1946 Later end his career as Additional S.P. Of Tejga Dhaka In the 60's He was from Dariapur, Saheb Bari, Habigonj.Took his last breath in his residence 47 najimuddin road Dhaka in 1965 AD

THE MEDINA CHARTER

622 C.E.

In the name of God the Compassionate, the Merciful.
(1) This is a document from Muhammad the prophet (governing the relations) between the believers and Muslims of Quraysh and Yathrib, and those who followed them and joined them and labored with them.
(2) They are one community (umma) to the exclusion of all men.
(3) The Quraysh emigrants according to their present custom shall pay the bloodwit within their number and shall redeem their prisoners with the kindness and justice common among believers.
(4-8) The B. ‘Auf according to their present custom shall pay the bloodwit they paid in heatheism; every section shall redeem its prisoners with the kindness and justice common among believers. The B. Sa ida, the B. ‘l-Harith, and the B. Jusham, and the B. al-Najjar likewise.
(9-11) The B. ‘Amr b. ‘Auf, the B. al-Nabit and the B. al-‘Aus likewise.
(12)(a) Believers shall not leave anyone destitute among them by not paying his redemption money or bloodwit in kindness.
(12)(b) A believer shall not take as an ally the freedman of another Muslim against him.
(13) The God-fearing believers shall be against the rebellious or him who seeks to spread injustice, or sin or animosity, or corruption between believers; the hand of every man shall be against him even if he be a son of one of them.
(14) A believer shall not slay a believer for the sake of an unbeliever, nor shall he aid an unbeliever against a believer.
(15) God’s protection is one, the least of them may give protection to a stranger on their behalf. Believers are friends one to the other to the exclusion of outsiders.
(16) To the Jew who follows us belong help and equality. He shall not be wronged nor shall his enemies be aided.
(17) The peace of the believers is indivisible. No separate peace shall be made when believers are fighting in the way of God. Conditions must be fair and equitable to all.
(18) In every foray a rider must take another behind him.
(19) The believers must avenge the blood of one another shed in the way of God.
(20)(a) The God-fearing believers enjoy the best and most upright guidance.
(20)(b) No polytheist shall take the property of person of Quraysh under his protection nor shall he intervene against a believer.
(21) Whoever is convicted of killing a believer without good reason shall be subject to retaliation unless the next of kin is satisfied (with blood-money), and the believers shall be against him as one man, and they are bound to take action against him.
(22) It shall not be lawful to a believer who holds by what is in this document and believes in God and the last day to help an evil-doer or to shelter him. The curse of God and His anger on the day of resurrection will be upon him if he does, and neither repentance nor ransom will be received from him.
(23) Whenever you differ about a matter it must be referred to God and to Muhammad.
(24) The Jews shall contribute to the cost of war so long as they are fighting alongside the believers.
(25) The Jews of the B. ‘Auf are one community with the believers (the Jews have their religion and the Muslims have theirs), their freedmen and their persons except those who behave unjustly and sinfully, for they hurt but themselves and their families.
(26-35) The same applies to the Jews of the B. al-Najjar, B. al-Harith, B. Sai ida, B. Jusham, B. al-Aus, B. Tha'laba, and the Jafna, a clan of the Tha‘laba and the B. al-Shutayba. Loyalty is a protection against treachery. The freedmen of Tha ‘laba are as themselves. The close friends of the Jews are as themselves.
(36) None of them shall go out to war save the permission of Muhammad, but he shall not be prevented from taking revenge for a wound. He who slays a man without warning slays himself and his household, unless it be one who has wronged him, for God will accept that.
(37) The Jews must bear their expenses and the Muslims their expenses. Each must help the other against anyone who attacks the people of this document. They must seek mutual advice and consultation, and loyalty is a protection against treachery. A man is not liable for his ally’s misdeeds. The wronged must be helped.
(38) The Jews must pay with the believers so long as war lasts.
(39) Yathrib shall be a sanctuary for the people of this document.
(40) A stranger under protection shall be as his host doing no harm and committing no crime.
(41) A woman shall only be given protection with the consent of her family.
(42) If any dispute or controversy likely to cause trouble should arise it must be referred to God and to Muhammad the apostle of God. God accepts what is nearest to piety and goodness in this document.
(43) Quraysh and their helpers shall not be given protection.
(44) The contracting parties are bound to help one another against any attack on Yathrib.
(45)(a) If they are called to make peace and maintain it they must do so; and if they make a similar demand on the Muslims it must be carried out except in the case of a holy war.
(45)(b) Every one shall have his portion from the side to which he belongs.
(46) The Jews of al-Aus, their freedmen and themselves have the same standing with the people of this document in purely loyalty from the people of this document. Loyalty is a protection against treachery. He who acquires ought acquires it for himself. God approves of this document.
(47) This deed will not protect the unjust and the sinner. The man who goes forth to fight and the man who stays at home in the city is safe unless he has been unjust and sinned. God is the protector of the good and God-fearing man and Muhammad is the apostle of God.
