On this very May Day, 14 years ago, three guys who met just slightly more than twelve months before in the dark recesses of Rome’s dirties goth clubs decided to forego the celebrations of the day (May 1st is a national holiday in Italy, and a huge concert is organised in one of Rome’s biggest squares, Piazza San Giovanni) and instead hid in one of their homes, playing with samples, synths and drum machines - yes, 2001 was still the year of hardware electronics.

In the Crowley-Harris Thoth deck, the fourteenth Trump is called “Art”, and the Master Therion writes about it: “Transmute all wholly into the image of thy will, bringing each to its true token of perfection. “…Combination of forces, realization, action based on accurate calculation; the way of escape, success after elaborate manoeuvres…”

Fourteen years later, this seems to me the best way to depict my own personal experience with XP8.

I won’t bother you all again with the reasons why we are stopping now: not only I already voiced my thoughts many times in the past year, and you can still read them here or here, but I also keep reading comments like “oh, I’ve heard more from this band now that they quit than ever before”, or “man, that was the longest goodbye ever”.

It was meant to be like this: if I learned something over this years is that unless you are in the business of making pre-canned pop music (which is absolutely a good business, mind you!), you need to create more than “just” music. You need to create a narrative, a myth that people can relate with in every possible way, you need to become an icon for them to both love AND hate.

Only by doing so you can leave a mark.

I think we did leave that mark, among very few others.

No matter what you think of our music or of us personally, you have one opinion about us: and that means we exist in your noosphere, and that is more than 99% of other bands out there. That is our revenge.

Fourteen years ago, XP8 started as a (rather crappy at first) amateurish musical project, and it evolved into a complex hypersigil that will keep on reverberating its message for years to come.

Dear listeners,

as some of you may know, or may have somehow noticed, I am not a great communicator.

Never been.

Plague of my life.

But on a watershed moment like this, even I feel the urge to put fingers to keys and commit some pixels to your screens and - oh how much I hate the word now - “share”…

For many years now, writing and singing for XP8 has been my means of expressing my feelings, my views and a lot of my grudges.

Unfortunately for you listeners this has meant that you were not at the forefront of my mind when the music happened, when decisions were taken.

Unfortunately for XP8 this has meant that we have lost just as many listeners as we have gained.

I can’t shake the feeling that most of XP8’s perceived success is more rooted in Marco’s undeniable web talent than the quality of our musical output.

But grown we have.

And better we did become

But too late.

And I think it’s only right to close this project now.

Now that we can be proud of what we are, if not of what we have achieved, and before we become caricatures of our former selves.

I’ve learned so much through XP8: about music, about myself, about others, about love.

it’s been great.

Exhilarating.

At times downright frustrating.

Always worth it.

I will probably bother your ears some more soon.

"Two Of Three: Albedo", the second EP in our Alchemy Series, is out now!

Two Of Three: Albedo by XP8

Everyone who pre-ordered it either on Bandcamp or iTunes should have received their copies directly, and everyone else can purchase it right now, or stream it on Spotify.

In alchemy, albedo is one of the four major stages of the magnum opus, along with Nigredo, Citrinitas and Rubedo. It is a Latinicized term meaning whiteness. Following the chaos or massa confusa of the Nigredo stage, the alchemist undertakes a purification in Albedo, which is literally referred to as ablutio – the washing away of impurities. In this process, the subject is divided into two opposing principles to be later coagulated to form a unity of opposites or coincidentia oppositorum during Rubedo.

Titus Burckhardt interprets the albedo as the end of the lesser work, corresponding to a spiritualization of the body. The goal of this portion of the process is to regain the original purity and receptivity of the soul. Psychologist Carl Jung equated the albedo with unconscious contrasexual soul images; the anima in men and animus in women. It is a phase where insight into shadow projections are realized, and inflated ego and unneeded conceptualizations are removed from the psyche.

of Mondays and Grumpiness

Monday: the start of the week, and the day where generally everyone is grumpy since the weekend is over and we have to go back to work and those daily routines we don’t particularly like.

So I guess you will all bear with me if I use the grumpy day for excellence to write about a subject that has been tackled many times, but that it seems it escapes a lot of people still: and since, after all, these are the few times you all will ever hear from me, I think I can annoy you a bit more. Just a bit.

As many of you know now - not saying all since after over a decade in this business I realised how most of you just do not follow the news when it comes to bands releasing new material, and maybe you are right: after all, once there were many outlets likes radio, TV and magazines to send the message, and while the internet was supposed to be THE outlet it turned out to be just one big mess where all the signals get drowned in overbearing noise - like I said, as many of you know, we are releasing our last series of EPs before going on indefinite hiatus: which is just a nicer way to say we are quitting, but one that leaves some sort of hope for the future… after all, you never now what happens next.

I will be very blunt: so far, the interest on these EPs has been pretty much non-existent. Very few people are bothering to listen to them, media coverage has been scarce despite all the relevant outlets (the few left, see above) being notified, and the lingering feeling that I am left with is one big “why do I still even care?”

No, the “scene” is not dying: nothing ever really dies. But surely it is changing, and personally I think it’s a great thing because let’s be all honest, the past 5/8 years of it has been appalling. I welcome gladly the fact diverse sounds are getting more recognition, even if it’s mostly a case of bands re-discovering old styles and updating them. I surely welcome even more the fact that all the various pretenders who came in this genre thinking they’d go somewhere without a serious plan, be them bands or labels, are learning the hard way what I have been telling for years now: the party, at least “that” party, is over. Every party ends, sooner or later: better accept it and move on, unless of course you have your wife paying all your bills while you still go around the world in ever diminishing returns, playing the toilet circuit for 50 people while pretending to be a “rockstar” because you still think that impressing 20 year old girls with severe daddy issues is somewhat an achievement.

So… given this landscape, I’m in fact ok that these EPs, which I sincerely believe are among the best music me and Marko ever put out, even better than “Adrenochrome” which was my previous, personal high mark, are not getting much attention. It’s time to go home, we are just playing the last tunes at the afterparty.

But there is something that does bother me.

Brace yourselves now, because this is the point where most people will turn their noses, or get straight up angry with me: and that’s because the thing that bothers me is the realisation that most of our so-called fans are people who just don’t understand the need for a band, for ANY band, to survive on their purchases.

When I reposted the DJ Hive mix with “We Felt Nothing”, I got various messages from a DJ in Brazil asking for the tune to play at his club night. He contacted me here, and on my personal page and profile. Clearly he really liked the tune, and that did flatter me: every musician love to be recognised i that fashion. What I did not understand is why he then didn’t want to pay the 0.99 cents to get the song: 0.99 cents people.

You might argue that I could have just sent the song, and guess what: I did it, countless times over the past years… I sent more free promo than I can remember. At a certain point I even had the entire discography available for everyone who requested it.

It did not change a single bit. I can honestly tell you all that by making all of XP8 music available, I noticed no sensible benefit for the band… no extra promotion, surely no more bookings, nothing.

And not like everything isn’t available for streaming anyway, on Bandcamp, Soundcloud AND YouTube.

I just asked something that I thought obvious: if you want my song for your party, please, pay for it. It’s cheap and that is the ONLY thing that will make a difference for me, because let’s all face it: playing a tune in Brazil will not turn into a XP8 booking over there. And in case you haven’t noticed, that’s the other big issue with our scene and this genre: not only we are very few, but we are also far too scattered… a rock or metal band can play a lot in their immediate neighbourhoods to gather a solid fan base, while bands like XP8 were always bound to play a show here and another on the other side of the world. Yes, it made me travel a lot but in the end it was impossible to fully invest on it.

So, in closure: 0.99 cents for a song it’s not much. And it’s what makes ALL the difference in the world.

The party is over anyway.

So, it looks like the rumours were true: Alt-Fest is now officially cancelled.

We only want to add a couple of things… first of all, for us this is particularly sad because we planned it to be the last XP8 concert, our farewell gig. And before you jump to conclusions: no, it’s not going to be easy to find an alternative. Especially not one as good as Alt-Fest was: that kinda exposure is something simply doesn’t come by these days. Not for us at least.

It looks like we’ll have to do without one last farewell party: we want to to thank all the people who contacted us, some offering alternatives, but none of them seem viable for us at this moment, especially given the fact we prepared pyros for this show and wanted to film it professionally.

~~Surely it’s a sign of how much you guys cared about it, and we thank you for that.~~ Turns out we had a great last gig at SOS Fest, the smaller event put together by Flag Promotions to try and salvage some of the damage done. Due to the smaller venue we weren't able to film it as planned, but some good pictures are surfacing and a full coverage from Regen Magazine is coming soon.

Furthermore, I am personally baffled by the comments I’ve been reading around: it looks like some people are actually happy that the festival failed, and did it so spectacularly. It feels like these people, maybe just the dreaded vocal minority of the web, but maybe not, are truly happy that pretty much the only big event the goth/industrial scene has seen outside Germany - EVER - was doomed to fall. It boggles my mind. But then again, these are those ultra-defender of the “underground” would rather die of ebola - very possible these days - than having 10 more people at their parties. These people are the very reason why this scene is fading away faster and faster. Elitism and sectarianism only brought a sterile soil, and turned away those youngsters who approached this genre and scene in the past few years: it’s not an uncommon view to see the blogs, tumblrs or twitters of guys and girls who embraced our music just a few years ago now having completely forsaken it, going to back to something more inclusive like metal or alt rock.

Finally, I’m equally baffled at how bad the Alt-Fest HQ handled the mess: the last 4 days have been a lesson in how to fail at social media under every aspect. It’s truly a disgrace. Adding this to the way they boasted to be “the biggest festival in the universe” and their repeated pleas to support it “in the name of the scene”, it gives out a very sad, almost pathetic image.
These people basically frozen the UK alt scene for two whole years, jeopardising tour plans and putting club nights and the few other festivals at risk, and in the end they failed to deliver what they promised... and all they can say is "I'm sorry, we miscalculated". This is what happens when amateurs take the stage.

To add insult to injury, at this point I can tell you that pretty much ALL THE HEADLINERS and their agents WERE contacted as the rumors of the cancellation started to spread by the various companies working on the logistics of the event. Yet the promoters left us and countless others completely in the dark, as we were just not good enough to even be included in a mass email. It seems they didn’t realise that even “just a day” would have made a hell of a difference, as not only we are all losing money but now we are also effectively losing time and the chance to reschedule our time, holidays and whatnot. I defended them for months when the naysayers started their annoying mumbling, but in retrospect I must say those naysayers were right.

I do wonder if their monthly event in London will still go on. I wouldn’t feel ok by supporting someone who just let so many people down like this: no matter what sort of problems they were trying to face, you just don’t keep people for four full days in the dark, when you get non-stop messages from people who spend hundreds if not thousands of cash in flights, trains, rentals and hotels.
Still it seems that running a successful monthly club for the "alternative people" will give you a free pass for every fuck up you might end up doing, as the countless messages of absolution and support, even in the face of this inevitable demise, kept on popping over social media... sure, the minority in relation with the thousands of angry voices that were asking for the statement they released only today.

In closure: Alt-Fest is gone, and it’s a missed opportunity for everyone - maybe it was just too ambitious to being with, but it was the right thing to try, to breathe new life in an ageing, fading scene.

Sure, there are still other, genre-specific festivals out there, and some are bloody good. But by closing the boundaries more and more we are just dying out. XP8 is disappearing. Straftanz is gone already. More will follow as more already fell over the past few years. Maybe most of you won’t care, or even notice, but when in a few years or even less the only bands you’ll get to see live will be the ones already headlining every German festival, just realise who of you had, too, a part in all of this. *

I guess this is a situation where the subject really "says it all": Alt-Fest is exactly in one month, and it will be the last XP8 concert - at least for the foreseeable future.

Over the past years it became more and more difficult to book shows, and this is the first time in our career where we don't have anything booked after this one... sadly, it also seems like nothing is going to magickally appear either.

So come to see us at Alt-Fest for one last big party together: we'll make sure it's going to be a memorable one!

One year after the successful release of Adrenochrome and its follow-up remix EP, Meathead’s Lost HD, we are back and ready to unleash the Alchemy Series: three EPs planned to be released no more than six months to each other, an non-stop audio assault that will once again set aflame the alternative dancefloors worldwide with its mixture of old and new influences from the classic sounds of trance to the modern beats of EDM.

Three releases as three are the phases of the Alchemical process, said to transform the lower metals such as lead into gold, and which is nothing else but a veiled allegory of the initiatory path from man to Godhead.

The journey starts on June 6th, 2014 with One Of Three: Nigredo.

Nigredo, or blackness, in alchemy means putrefaction or decomposition. The alchemists believed that as a first step in the pathway to the philosopher's stone all alchemical ingredients had to be cleansed and cooked extensively to a uniform black matter. In analytical psychology, the term became a metaphor 'for the dark night of the soul, when an individual confronts the shadow within'.

Last New Year's Eve was also the last Vampire Party ever, held in its original location in Antwerp, Belgium.

After 17 years and due to the dwindling attendance, another classic party here in Europe closed its doors, and it's even sadder since in May 2013 the Vampire Party Live event was super successful and it seemed possible to breathe new life into the goth/ebm/industrial scene in Belgium... but instead, it was its swan song.

We wrote this song as the official VP Theme, which was supposed to be released in a USB stick and given to the crowds of VP Live 2014: instead, here it is as free download.

Chapter 7.5: MEATHEAD'S LOST HD

He gets up from his desk and walks the window.

It’s been two years since he’s decided to swap his boring view of Kobe port with a rendition of Shin-Iwaki. Well, maybe not a faithful reproduction of the present state of his native town, but the nano-LEDs embedded in his windowpane glass show him what it will eventually look like, once the post-meltdown reconstruction works end.

He looks out and sighs, he’s engulfed in a whirlwind of emotions so foreign to him that mostly he’s aware of his surprise of feeling so much, so deeply.

Watching the live feed of the girl running away, escaping his extraction team, he had felt the sharp taste of panic rising to his throat, but it had since subsided to something else, something warped and new: his brain producing a bio-chemical remix to re-interpret his original state.

An alert flash in his glasses and he jacks in again:

[Yes, McGee, I do hope you have finally have some good news for me, yes?]

[Err, no Sir, unfortunately the trail on the two targets has gone cold. We were able to detain the facilitator though. Roland Baker, AKA Meathead, AKA TwoDee, AKA… yes Sir, sorry, he’s a local hacker and Milner and Fox are interrogating him at the moment.]

He walks back to his chair and slouches down noisily. It’s so out of character, and he attributes his changes to all his recent dealing with uncouth gaijin.

[McGee, your company is proving to be a rather disappointing choice of contractor on our part. At least don’t fail to keep me informed of any development in the search and the questioning.]

[Yes Sir, absolutely... Actually, we retrieved a data storage device when apprehending the facilitator. I’s just a few TB of encrypted material, but I imagine you would be interested in having it checked out?]

And so our first crowd funding event ever is over and done, and as you know it was a huge success: from raising then needed amount in less than 24 hours to dramatically overscoring the original goal 40 days later, we have done all of this together.

Both me and Marko are deeply thankful to each and every one of you for making this possible: if you ever followed our news updates or blogs, you already know how many times we struggled to keep the band alive, but this time you, our crowd, proved once and for all that you want more XP8 - and we are more than happy to keep on doing it.

So what's next?
First of all, check if you already received your digital download copy of Adrenochrome: if you didn't, of if you lost the download link, don't hesitate to contact us right now at info@xp8.org to request a new link.

In the coming week, we'll mail out the orders for the USB Pill and we'll provide download links to anyone who purchased the complete digital pack perk. Then, we'll have to wait for Indiegogo to disburse the full amount raised (if you want to know all the details, check out the FAQ here): it should take no longer than 15 working days, which means we should have all the funds necessary by the beginning of July.

At that point, we'll order the digipacks from the pressing plant: that will take roughly one more week, meaning that we should be able to mail the CDs out by mid-July - but no worry, we will post updates on this process on our pages. Same goes for the t-shirt: you should be able to receive it by mid-July as well.

An album three years in the making, a true labour of love as Nick Quarm of Brutal Resonance said in his review, is finally here.

We both hope you are going to love it as much as we love it: it's without any doubt the release we are most proud of. So without further ado, let us present you the story of Liam Bateman:

This means two things: first of all, we can stick to our original plan and release the album on Bandcamp, iTunes and the other digital distribution networks on June 1st.

All of you who supported us and bought one of the perks including the immediate digital download of the album, will receive it in the mail between June 1st - June 4th.

This also mean that in the even we keep on receiving donations and support we'll be able to put the extra money towards funding a new video: it's been a while we wanted to do another full scale music video like we did back in 2008 for The Art Of Revenge, so maybe this is the right moment for it.

Some of you messaged us yesterday regarding trying to work towards a vinyl release: we are definitely looking into that as well.
