The Fellowship Programme provides the successful applicant with a unique opportunity to:

develop and advance their research under the supervision of a UNU-IAS or UNU-ISP faculty member and contribute to the overall research agenda of the Institute;
widen their research interests and professional networks by working in the international and multi-disciplinary context of the UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP, and with its wider network of Japanese universities and research institutes, as well as international collaborators;
become exposed to the workings of the international and multilateral policy process and the broader UN system; and

link with other UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows.
The Fellows are resident at UNU-IAS in Yokohama, UNU-IAS OUIK in Kanazawa, or UNU-ISP in Tokyo, Japan for the full term of the fellowship. This gives the PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows the opportunity to gain from the broader research programme of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences arranged by UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP. UNU's close institutional links with Japanese affiliated professors and researchers from key universities and think tanks in Japan and around the world also allow Fellows to link into the broader Japanese academic and research community. Since the start of the Fellowship Programme at UNU-IAS in 1996, more than 200 young scholars, 70% of whom are from the developing world, have benefited from collaboration with UNU-IAS/UNU-ISP and Japanese scholars in this way. Applications will be invited for the following three fellowship types:

IGES is recruiting research interns for the Summer 2011 period (as stipulated
in our Charter of Establishment) with the aim of promoting understanding of
its strategic research. IGES internships offer an opportunity to gain on-site
work experience, and are aimed at those who wish to play a part in
interdisciplinary
policy research toward sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region.

1. Research Groups currently recruiting interns:
[IGES Hayama Headquarters]
Programme Management Office (PMO)
Adaptation Team (AD), Natural Resources Management Group (NRM)
Sustainable Consumption and Production Group (SCP)
[IGES Satellite Offices]
Kitakyushu Urban Centre（KUC）

2. Requirements:

Interns must:
Be postgraduates (location of graduate school does not matter).
Be willing to learn from the on-the-job training at IGES (the internship is
not a training programme for students to write an individual thesis, but
rather an opportunity to experience real strategic policy research and
operational activities).
Satisfy the individual criteria outlined in the “Internship Overview” for
the group with which you would like to spend your internship.
The research intern should be proficient enough in English for the purposes of
oral communication and writing of documents.

3. Content of training:
The research interns will collect information for, or draft documents related
to,
their own research group. Work is supervised by the director of or training
supervisor
for the group to which the intern belongs. Those who are selected for
internships will
be contacted by the relevant group director to discuss and agree on the specific
contents of training.

4. Term:
In principle, the internship should last a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of
3 months (and must fall between 1 April and 30 September 2011).
(actual term to be decided after discussion between the research intern and
their group)

if there are vacant rooms (telephone charges will be at the research intern’s
own expense).
b) IGES Kitakyushu Urban Centre
If the research intern cannot commute from his/her current residence to the

Description of research theme:

We are witnessing the rapid growth of a new generation of participatory and collaborative network technologies that provide individuals with a platform for sophisticated online social interaction. Social networks today have hundreds of millions of users and are transforming our social and professional interactions and to some extent are shaping society itself. Gradually, society is discerning that this development not only brings strong benefits to the social and economic fabric, but also introduces new risks related to privacy violations. At this stage, these issues are often perceived as isolated incidents that most organizations do not take accountability for. Yet, the implications of social networking environments for individual users, communities, organizations and society at large will become much more evident and most likely more substantial if necessary precautions are not taken. Especially alarming is the massive responsibility that individuals incur with respect to managing privacy and security risks arising from the information collected and shared about their everyday life on social networking sites. This phenomenon is has been coined as the responsibilisation of individuals.

The main objective of the overall research project is to mitigate the responsibilisation of individuals who use or are affected by social networking services by making the underlying social networking infrastructures and the organizations that run them more accountable. In order to achieve this objective first an understanding of the target audience is required as well as forms of responsibilisation. This target audience includes users, communities and organizations in Flanders (Belgium). The plan is to develop solutions that facilitate better decision making with respect to the target groups’ privacy and security concerns, and that mitigate the risks, threats and concerns that currently are manifest in this domain.

The PhD research position at IBBT-SMIT (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) is part of this larger four-year interdisciplinary research project on security and privacy in online social networks, involving different Belgian universities and one American university. More in particular the doctoral research has a twofold perspective. On the one hand it wants to understand the practices and needs of users with regard to privacy issues within social network sites, mainly based on the use of qualitative and ethnographic methods. On the other hand it will focus on the critical design variables and tools for social software. For the latter a translation needs to be made from the user research findings to possible guidelines and requirements for future media en technological solutions.

Requirements:

A Master degree in Social Sciences, (Communication Studies, Sociology, ...)
Good knowledge of Dutch (and English)
Strong affinity and/or interest in the domain of audience and user studies, social media technologies and media sociology
Good knowledge of user research methods
Good writing skills
To be flexible and to be able to cope with deadlines
Team player with strong social skills
Research experience is a plus.

All applicants apply simultaneously for admission to the University and for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The Trust does not admit or place scholars.
Before submitting an application you should check that you are eligible, read through the ideal candidate section and check which application deadline applies to you.
Who is Eligible
Candidates for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship:
may be citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom.
may apply to study any subject available at the University of Cambridge.
may apply to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study:
PhD (three year research-only degree)
One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)

MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree)
MBBChir Clinical Studies (four year postgraduate degree)
must be admitted to one of the degrees above at Cambridge through the University’s normal admission procedures. The Trust does not admit students.
must be well prepared for the Cambridge course for which they are applying and must meet all of the conditions for admission specified by the University (e.g. academic, English language proficiency, if required, and any other conditions set).
must be able to show evidence of high academic achievement, leadership potential, social commitment and a good fit with Cambridge.
who are already studying at Cambridge are only eligible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if they are applying for a new course of study (e.g. a one year ‘MPhil only’ student may apply for funding to continue on to the PhD). Candidates already studying at Cambridge who are not applying for a new course of study (e.g. have already started their PhD) are not eligible to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

The Ideal Candidate
There is no one template for a Gates Scholar: each scholar is different and brings something unique to the programme.
However, when selecting Gates Scholars, the Trust looks for students with enthusiasm, robustness of intellect, a willingness to engage and an appropriate humility that comes from an awareness that nothing is ever really simple.
In particular, Gates Scholars will be driven by the values of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which include a commitment to reducing inequities and improving lives around the world. The Foundation’s mission is to increase opportunity and equity for those most in need, particularly in the areas of health and education, often through the use of science and technology.
The Trust expects a good match to be made between the applicant’s qualifications and aspirations and what Cambridge has to offer. Successful applicants will have the ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline while in Cambridge, with a strong aptitude for research, analysis and a creative approach to defining and solving problems.
How Competitive
For the USA:
c. 800 eligible applicants apply for admission and funding
c. 200 highly ranked by Departments
c. 100 invited to interview
c. 30 offered a Gates Cambridge Scholarship after interview
For all other countries:
* c. 7,000 eligible applicants apply for admission and funding
c. 300 are highly ranked by Departments
c. 100 are invited to interview
c. 50 offered a Gates Cambridge Scholarship after interview
Competition for admission to the University of Cambridge and for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship is intense.
The University of Cambridge is normally ranked in the top three universities worldwide. It typically receives over 9,000 applications for graduate study from non-British applicants, approximately 1,700 of whom take up their place at Cambridge.
Once applicants have applied for admission and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, the Trust asks academic departments in Cambridge to rank their very best candidates. A shortlisting committee then applies the four main criteria of the scholarships to produce a final interview list. Gates Scholars are selected after interview.
Value
A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge, namely:
the University Composition Fee and College fees at the appropriate rate*
a maintenance allowance for a single student (£12, 500 for 12 months at the 2009-10 rate; pro rata for courses shorter then 12 months)
one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
A discretionary contribution towards the costs of supporting dependants at Cambridge (upon application).
Once in residence, Gates Scholars may apply for financial help with the costs of attending conferences, undertaking fieldwork and other activities.
*The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students and applicants should see the Graduate Studies Prospectus for full details about precise amounts. Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities, the Trust will not pay these fees
Interview Process
All candidates shortlisted for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship attend a 20-25 minute interview. The interviews are conducted by a panel of three to five members, knowledgeable in a general way about the candidate’s field of study.
Candidates are be asked about their work: why it excites them; what they know about the broader field of which it is part; why it is important; why coming to Cambridge will help them with their research or build on their earlier educational experiences. Also, do they understand that higher education brings privilege and opens opportunity for the future; what do they intend to do with the benefits they’ve had; how do they see themselves contributing in time. Candidates may also be asked questions of a probing intellectual or ethical dimension, to which there are no ‘right’ answers.
Interviews for candidates from the United States who have not previously studied for a degree at the University of Cambridge are usually held in Annapolis, MD at the beginning of February for entry in the following October. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted before the Christmas break. The Trust normally interviews about 100 US candidates and, after interview, awards about 30 Gates Cambridge Scholarships, depending on the total number of awards available in that year.
Interviews for candidates from all other countries (and for candidates from the United States who have previously studied, or are currently studying, a degree at Cambridge) are held in Cambridge and are either conducted in person or by telephone (depending on the candidate’s location) in late March. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in early March. The Trust normally interviews about 100 candidates and, after interview, awards about 50 Gates Cambridge Scholarships, depending on the total number of awards available in that year.
All candidates are informed of the results of their interview within a week.
Application Deadline : 15 October 2010 (USA) & 1 December 2010 (Non USA)

We have an immediate opening for a post-doctoral position to work with a team of scientists on the NSF-funded Jemez River Basin and Santa Catalina Mountains (JRB-SCM) Critical Zone Observatory (CZO). The initial appointment will be for one year, with the expectation that the successful candidate will be reappointed for a second year. The JRB-SCM is designed to

examine the impacts of space-time variability in energy and water flux on coupled critical zone (CZ) processes along two climate gradients; the first is on rhyolitic parent material in the JRB of northern New Mexico and the second is on granite and schist bedrock within the SCM in southern Arizona. At sites that vary in parent rock, elevation, aspect, slope, soil development, and vegetation, the JRB-SCM CZO team uses a combination of measurement, modeling, and experimentation to address the following questions: (1) How does variability in energy input and related mass flux influence CZ structure and function? (2) How do feedbacks between landscape evolution and the cycling of water and carbon alter short- and long-term CZ development?

The ecohydrology and hydrologic partitioning (EHP) theme area of the JRB-SCM CZO is organized to capture linkages between vegetation, hydrology and CZ evolution. To help coordinate these efforts, we seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a recent PhD in ecohydrology, terrestrial hydrology, biometeorology, physiological ecology or other related field. The applicant should have experience in field methods related to ecohydrological partitioning of water, carbon, and energy fluxes, including familiarity with data, measurements
and instrumentation associated with micro-meteorology, snow depth, sap flow, leaf level photosynthesis, and soil respiration. Additionally, experience working with (Light Detection And Ranging) LiDAR data and spatial analysis methods is preferred. Research productivity and an interest in interdisciplinary research must be evident in the application. Because the post-doc will coordinate field campaigns with CZO students and faculty, demonstration of strong leadership and organizational skills are also important, as is the ability to navigate complex terrain while carrying heavy field equipment.

Applications, questions and inquiries should be sent to Shirley Papuga (papuga@email.arizona.edu), School of Natural Resources and the Environment, University of Arizona, PO Box 210043, Tucson, AZ 85721 USA, by 30 November 2010. Applications should include a CV, a statement of research interests and expertise, and names, phone numbers, and email addresses of three references. Electronic submissions are preferred. As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, the University of Arizona recognizes the power of a diverse community and encourages applications from individuals with varied experiences and backgrounds.
Academic background: Candidates must hold a two-year Master’s degree in social or political theory, and have academic experience in international political economy or European law.
Area competence: Candidates should possess broad knowledge of the organization and structure of the European Union, its institutions and politics, particularly in the area of security.

Language skills: English is the working language at PRIO and fluency in English is required. Mastery of other European languages is an advantage.
Professional skills: The doctoral researchers will share responsibility for the success of the overall project and work closely with other members of the project team. Excellent writing skills, strong IT skills, administrative experience and ability to produce results under pressure are important assets.
International cooperation: The project requires significant travel within the European Union and collaboration with several European partners. Collaborative skills are essential.
The projects will be carried out in PRIO’s Security Programme under the leadership of Prof. J. Peter Burgess. PRIO is an independent, international and interdisciplinary research institute that combines academically oriented research with short-term policy-oriented projects. Security research at PRIO takes place within a forward-looking, theoretically innovative unit with emphasis on European security research.

PRIO will be the doctoral researchers’ workplace and employer. PRIO is an independent, international and interdisciplinary research institute that combines long-term academi-cally oriented research with short-term policy-oriented projects (www.prio.no). The insti-tute encourages academic publishing of research results at the highest international level and has a strong publication record. PRIO is located in attractive premises in central Oslo, with a staff of about 70 people and a friendly, inclusive and professional work environment.

The PhD degree must be awarded by a university, and each doctoral researcher will be responsible for applying to, and enrolling in a compatible PhD programme at a Norwegian university. A two-year Master’s degree in the same discipline is generally required for enrolling in such programmes. Candidates with an interdisciplinary Master’s degree should make enquiries about eligibility for enrolling in a relevant programme. To facilitate integration in the overall project, the dissertation should be written as a compilation of journal articles.

PRIO is committed to promoting the careers of female researchers and to foster a more ethnically diverse work force at the institute. PRIO is not required to publicly announce vacancies but uses open, merit-based competitions to find the best possible candidate for each position.

The initial salary for a doctoral researcher without relevant seniority is step 47 in the Norwegian state salary system (currently NOK 377,500). The starting date for both positions is 1 February 2011.

Essential guidelines for each of the positions should be requested by sending an e-mail to recruiting@prio.no, stating clearly which position you are interested in. These guidelines include further details about the EU project(s) that the doctoral project will be part of, as well as guidelines for what should be included in the Description of doctoral research. Other questions about the position can be directed to J. Peter Burgess (peter@prio.no).

Applications should include the following:
CV, including a list of publications
Copies of certifications of university exams
One recent sample of academic writing (e.g. master thesis)
Description of doctoral research (see guidelines)
Names and contact details of two references

The application should be sent by e-mail, preferably as one PDF file, to recruiting@prio.no. The application deadline is Monday 15 November 2010. If you have not received an e-mail confirming that we have received your application within two working days, please contact PRIO immediately.
