Nokia Kinetic - Concept Phone

2010-07-23T16:26:00.000+05:30

The Nokia Kinetic isn't just a sleek concept phone. It's a sleek concept phone that raises itself up into a standing position when a call comes in. Huh? Inside the Kinetic is an electromagnet that can shift weights in the curved base, causing the phone to tilt upright on cue, that cue being an incoming call. Telemarketer again? Tap the phone to decline the call and it'll fall back down. It's intended to be a playful feature, though I can see it being useful in a quiet office where even vibrating phones are sometimes an irritant to others.

The Kinetic's pretty clever, though designer Jeremy Innes-Hopkins will have to do some serious convincing if anyone's going to go for the bulbous form factor of this thing.

N Board - Regular Stand for iPad

2010-07-13T17:04:00.000+05:30

Fresh from the streets of Korea comes the N-Board, a new gadget which lets you convert your iPad into an (almost) full-fledged netbook computer.

The handy N-Board acts as an easel to prop up your iPad, but also sports a hub with 4 USB ports, and what I thought was an unnecessary cooling fan.

Upon scrolling further down the product page, I came to discover that the N-Board was actually designed as a cooling station for everyday netbooks, but happens to make the perfect prop for your iPad too. That said, if you have both an iPad and a netbook, it’s nice to know that it’ll work with both.

Either way, you’re probably not going to be buying an N-Board any time soon, unless you happen to live in Korea, where it sells for 35,000 KRW (appx. $29 USD).

Steampunk LCD

2010-07-09T16:19:00.000+05:30

From owners website : This is a 22″ widescreen LCD that I built to compliment my brass keyboards. The frame is solid 1/4-inch brass that has been sanded and polished to a high shine. The base features a mixture of brass and black marble with a small brass “cord catch” to keep the power and data cords tidy.

Patience, folks…mice are coming soon!

This particular LCD is going to be seen in an upcoming, modernized, arthaus/indy/slasher remake of the old Nosferatu silent film along with a custom keyboard that has runes on the keys. The film is being made by Red Scream Films LLC. and looks like it’s going to be really cool.

After filming, this LCD will be auctioned on Ebay. Be sure to join my mailing list to be notified when it goes on sale.

iWeb – 6.5" Notebook - Transformer

2010-04-07T17:43:00.004+05:30

What would be advanced, lightweight, compact and beautiful were not laptops and netbooks, one they will always lag behind the desktop, and it is - a full keyboard. I think few would argue with the fact that the printed text of 10-15 pages on a laptop is not so easy, then as a netbook, this procedure becomes suschuyu torture. The concept, proposed by designer Yang Yongchang is based on quite a successful idea: since we are dealing with a scanner, why not make a big crooked number? In fact, such solutions have been proposed in the concepts of external keyboards for the Tablet PC, in addition, collapsing real keyboard used in conjunction with the CPC in those days, when smart phones are not dragged to a consumer handheld computers. For example, if you implement this concept in any netbook, you can get quite a decent keyboard size of an average laptop. In turn, the netbook with such a design would have differed little from the desktop PC in terms of convenience of the press. More images after the jump...

iPhone Pro - Another Concept Smartphone in the form of a Slider

2010-03-21T22:33:00.003+05:30

By now you must be used to all the pictures and sketches that hit the web before a hot product launch. We’ve shown you iPhone 4G concepts before and today we have one more for you. The iPhone in the picture above is not dubbed as the iPhone 4G but as the iPhone Pro, a handset that wants to be, simply put, “just better.” More after the break...

The iPhone Pro is supposed to offer us an even slimmer design which will pack inside a better camera and better audio and a front facing camera for video calls. The iPhone Pro is supposed to run on iPhone OS 3.2 and feature a larger screen too. More importantly, looking at the iPhone Pro we will discover two slide-out “paddles” which are touch-friendly and bring us dedicated gaming controls. A new MagSafe power port is found on the back which means the regular 30-pin port will not be required anymore.

So what do you say, folks? Are you impressed or what? As for me I have to protest against a few features described here. Sure the design is impressive but we already have an iPhone Pro. It’s called the iPad and although it doesn’t have dedicated gaming buttons it will act quite nicely as a mobile gaming platform. It has an even bigger screen which means we’ll be able to use the iPhone for communication-related matters and the iPad for games and apps. That does make sense, right?

And what about that crazy power plug? There are tons of docks made for iPhones and iPods that use the 30-pin port. Why should Apple change the port and thus render all those products useless? In case the iPhone Pro was real then users would need special MagSafe to 30-pin connectors for their docks, wouldn’t they?

And what’s the deal with iPhone OS 3.2? We’re looking forward for iPhone OS 4.0 for the next iPhone versions, aren’t we?

Naturally the device in the pictures here is just a concept so I’ll understand that designers can take all the freedom they want when imagining next-gen products like the iPhone Pro or the iPhone 4G. But I’d like to see these designers approach the matter from a realistic point of view and create next-gen gadgets that would be based on available Apple technology (at least what we know of so far) and thus could actually be feasible for the near future.

We’ll be back with more iPhone 4G designs as this saga will not be over soon. But at least we’ll get to appreciate the amazing work these designers put in as well as add some constructive criticism of our own.

Garmin Asus A50 Smartphone

2010-02-17T16:55:00.004+05:30

After building their own operating system for the Garmin nuvifone G60 caused the handset to take roughly a decade (in smart phone years, that is) to come out, it’s no surprise that Garmin-Asus is steering clear of that route. They announced back in June of last year that they’d be bring Android into the mix, and this latest handset reflects that. More images after the break...

The handset you see up top is Garmin’s first foray into Android, which they’ve lovingly dubbed the “nuvifone A50?.

They’re not saying which version of Android comes tucked in side (though Engadget has been tipped that it’s running 1.6, which seems perfectly likely), but here’s what we do know so far:

Screen: 3.5 inch, Half VGA (480×320) capacitive touch screen
Internal Storage: 4GB flash
Camera: 3 megapixels with autofocus
Hardware Features: microSD slot, accelerometer, compass, car mount and car charger included

Nettop from Onkyo with switchable modular DVD-drive

2009-10-27T20:41:00.005+05:30

An interesting innovation has pleased us with an Asian company Onkyo. Nettop manufacturer has released a new platform based P305A3 ION already familiar with the Atom 230 processor (pozhmotnichali long overdue move to a dual core 330) with a frequency of 1.6 gigahertz. What is so unusual for a novelty? P305A3. Of course, this you have not seen: a nettop comes bundled with an external DVD-drive, which is attached to the hull P305A3 as a module. You can always leave your home Nettop without an optical drive, taking him on a trip to the set on a thin laptop. Rather, such an interesting solution to attract many users. The device is equipped with two gigabytes of RAM and hard disk capacity of 160 gigabytes. Buy a novelty will be in March next year at a price of 770 dollars, to put it mildly - about twice as overrated.

Concept Laptop with Flexible display

2009-10-10T19:35:00.000+05:30

Brave German designers are not shy about experimenting with form. Of course, the day when such a concept could be put into practice, will not soon, despite the existing achievements in the field of flexible OLED-screens. The idea is simple - there is a small tube with a wire, standard connectors and speakers. At his literally wound rolled in a tube display, which is practically a slight movement of the hand can be easily turned into a laptop screen with a keyboard and large display. And with great desire in the display still appears and folding legs. We all love these concepts precisely because of what they look spectacular and much promise.
