Ten iOS 7 features that were borrowed from the jailbreak community

Let’s state the obvious; iOS 7 borrows heavily from many of our favorite jailbreak tweaks. Without even really trying, I came up with a list of ten different jailbreak tweaks that may have inspired the iOS 7 development team.

Yes, the obvious ones are here, like SBSettings and LiveClock, but some not so obvious ones have made the cut as well. Check inside, as I walkthrough all 10 jailbreak tweak inspirations on video, and compare them with their iOS 7 counterparts.

LiveClock

This is, perhaps, the most obvious jailbreak tweak inspiration. In fact, it’s almost a 1:1 tradeoff. Prior to iOS 7, the only way that you could get a real working clock on your Clock app icon was to use a jailbreak tweak aptly entitled LiveClock. iOS 7 now features a fully functional clock on the Home screen. It’s a nice feature, even if it is a bit on the redundant side with the status bar clock and all. As expected, there’s no way to customize the iOS 7 version of LiveClock; what you see is what you get.

The App Switcher

The new App Switcher is a pretty significant departure from what we currently have in iOS 6. Although Apple likely took its inspiration from a variety of sources, including webOS, I like to think that the jailbreak tweak called Dash provided some of the idea. Toss in a little bit of Auxo, and you’ve got iOS 7′s new App Switcher.

Control Center

It’s basically SBSettings on steroids without any of the customization that SBSettings brings to the table. I’m ecstatic to finally have toggles on iOS, but the level of customization that SBSettings, and other similar tweaks like Auxo and NCSettings brings to the table will keep us looking forward to an iOS 7 jailbreak after all.

Folders

Seven iterations in, and we can finally put as many items in a folder as we’d like. There’s also a handy paging feature that allows us to add our own mini Home screens inside each folder. Tweaks like FolderEnhancer and Infinifolders could have been inspirations for this.

Dynamic Wallpaper

It’s not exactly the same, but LivePapers is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to have animated wallpaper on a jailbroken iPhone. Thus far, iOS’ dynamic wallpaper doesn’t feature effects as drastic as LivePapers, but there’s certainly room for growth. iOS 7′s dynamic wallpapers feature interesting 3D effects that change as you move your iOS device, which is similar to another jailbreak tweak — DeepEnd.

Tabs

In iOS 7, Safari now features the ability to deploy an unlimited amount of tabs, just like a jailbreak tweak called Tabs+.

Blurred Notification Center

The new Notification Center ditches the opaque linen textures for a translucent overlay that allows you to see a blurred view of the contents behind the drop down window. Back when Notification Center was all the rage, a jailbreak tweak called FastBlurredNotificationCenter did just that.

Notification Center on Lock screen

Back before it was possible to view Notification Center from the Lock screen like you can with iOS 7, there was a jailbreak tweak called Bulletin, and it allowed you to do something crazy — view your Notification Center right from the comforts of the Lock screen.

Swipe Gestures

SwipeBack is an extremely handy jailbreak tweak that allows you to use simple swipe gestures to navigate back through various menus on iOS. iOS 7 has adopted this functionality in a limited manner by allowing you to use swipe back gestures in apps like Mail, Messages, and even Settings.

Safari search box

I’ve always hated the separation of search and address bars in the stock Mobile Safari browser. Now Apple has finally moved Safari out of the stone age, and has updated it with a Google Chrome like omnibox for unified search and browser requests. Back before the mobile version of Google Chrome even appeared to be possible on iOS, there was a jailbreak tweak called Safari UniBar, and it allowed you to have a true unified browsing experience.

Apple iOS 7 Features: A Redesigned iOS inspired by Jailbreaking

Tim Cook and company just took the wraps off of the next version of its mobile operating system, iOS 7. And as expected, it’s by far the biggest update to the platform since the original iPhone launched back in 2007.

In short, iOS 7 adds a vast number of incredible feature that were undoubtedly inspired by jailbreaking.

What’s different? Everything. In line with previous reports and speculation, Apple has completely redesigned the OS from the ground up with an all new user interface and a slew of new features. And honestly, it looks amazing…

Wow, where to even start here. Obviously, we’ll be going into specific features in more detail in the future post on our website.

First, there’s the Lock screen. It’s been completely redone with a much more minimalistic design. The ‘slide to unlock’ slider is now transparent, the Camera grabber has been moved to the bottom right-hand corner, and it now supports animated backgrounds. Bonus: the Notification Center can now be accessed from the Lock Screen.

And now the Home screen. Notice how the icons have all been redone, and there are now Settings toggles available with a swipe up from the bottom of the screen. The new Home screen looks vibrant, and Apple says it’s added a ton of new features.

Today photos and camera apps looks totally different in iOS 7 and they are full redesigned and look more cooler than before. The company added some improvements to the photos app First and foremost, the new Photos app. The new Photos app auto organizes pictures based on when and where you took them, a featured dubbed Moments.
One interesting aspect of Moments is the ability to zoom out, and selectively pick specific photos from the grouping by tapping and dragging your finger over the photos. Photo streams have received a significant update as well, as you can now share your photos directly into other’s photo streams, and vice versa.
The camera app looks amazing as Apple dubs it, four cameras in one. With a swipe, you can go from the standard camera, to the video camera, to a square Instagram inspired camera, to the panoramic camera. Further showing the influence that Instagram has, you also have the ability to add one of several filters directly to the photos you take without using a third party app.
Now you can quickly share your photos with just one tap, right now the camera app supports Facebook, Twitter, Mail, Google+ and more....

Yet another big update is the new Siri. It got a polished new interface and it goes after Google Now with card-based UI and new services to provide answers to your questions (Twitter, Wikipedia and Bing, take that Google). It can also control your iDevice (increase brightness, turn on Bluetooth) and it offers a new, more life-like voice (both female and male) for English, French and German.

The Safari browser for iOS was updated with a new 3D UI for switching tabs (looks kinda like the one Chrome for Android has) and you're no longer limited to only 8 tabs. The browser now features a single smart search filed rather than having two fields - one for URL typing and another one for initiating Google searches.

Safari will also show what tabs are open on your other devices and features the just announced iCloud Keychain integration, meaning it would be sync your passwords and credit card info with your Mac. The Reading list and Shared links features of the desktop Safari are available here too.

A cool new feature lets you swipe from the sides of the screen to go back and forth through your browsing history.

The App Store got tweaked too – it now automatically updates apps (hi, Play Store) and suggest apps based on your location (just like Windows Phone).

Facetime got an audio only option, which is basically VoIP calling.
There's AirDrop, which is Apple's answer to NFC (they even made a joke about not having to bump your phones together). It's a streamlined and centralized interface for sharing stuff with other people, who our close by. It uses a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection for that.
Finally, the Music player has been revamped as well and now it offers a new service, called iTunes Radio – an ad-supported streaming music service for free (launching in the US). This one is also available on Macs, PCs and even Apple TV.

There's also a cool new weather app that shows the weather in multiple cities with beautiful animations, a detailed forecast for today and tomorrow and the weather for the next five days. You can check the weather of one location or all of them at once.

As for the deeper vehicle integration, Apple introduced ‘iOS in the Car.’ The feature apparently mirrors your iPhone on your in-car display, similar to AirPlay, allowing users to access Maps, messages, and other services without having to take their eyes off the wheel.

Apple says that it has been working with numerous auto-makers to get this right. Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, Ferrari, Chevrolet, Kia, Hyundai, Volvo, Jaguar, have all pledged support for the feature and are planning to start adding it to their 2014 model vehicles.

But there’s also a lot of stuff in iOS 7 that Apple didn’t talk about today, due to time limitations and other restrictions. And looking at this slide behind Tim Cook at the end of the keynote, there’s at least 24 features that weren’t mentioned today…

And we imagine that this is just a handful of the new features in iOS 7. Last year, Apple said that it added more than 200 new features in iOS 6, and this is a much bigger update. So we expect to see tons of new stuff pop up in the coming months.

Remember, this is just the first of what will likely be 4 or 5 beta releases before iOS 7 lands this fall. Also keep in mind that Apple typically saves one or two big features to announce alongside a new iPhone, which too is expected in fall.

iOS 7 is available for the iPhone in beta today. In the Fall, iOS 7 will be available on iPhone 4 and later, iPod touch 5th gen, iPad mini and iPad 2 and later.

Apple WWDC ( World Wide Developer Conference ) is a yearly event for the release of new Apple Operating system ( iOS and MAC OS )

At these days every year, apple fans are waiting eagerly for the new and amazing new surprises which will be unveiled on the yearly world wide developers conference at San Fransisco. We are very close from WWDC 2013 which will be held by June 10.

Apple will announce the new iDevices operating system iOS 7 and its new major features and improvements. It will also announce the new OS X 10.9 . Some of optimists predicted that Apple will give some news about the new iPhone 5S/6 , but actually i don’t think, do you?
According to an earlier post, a leaked document states that apple may launch the next generation of iPhone in July

BBM for iPhone and Android launching June 27th?

BlackBerry Messenger now looks to be taking on the likes of WhatsApp and iMessage after BlackBerry announced it would be launching on iOS and Android
BBM for iPhone and Android could be launching as soon as 27th June according to a tweeted picture of the app by unofficial Twitter feed BlackBerry Worldwide.

The fan-based Twitter feed which posts pictures and tips for BlackBerry users announced that they believed the app would be launching at the end of this month.

"Bbm officially available on iphone and android phones from 27th june2013"

BBM has in the past only been available for owners of BlackBerry smartphones but just a few months after the launch of BlackBerry 10 Thorsten Heins announced that the free messaging service would now be launching on other operating systems.

This will put the service in direct competition with the likes of WhatsApp and Apple's iMessage which allows owners of Apple products to talk to each other for free.

Despite the company announcing the launch of the app little else is know about what it will look like or the full extent of the services that will be available.

All we do know is that it will initially launch as a simple messaging service with more advanced features like BBM Voice and BBM Video appearing in updates later in the year.

Zeus is Back - Beware Facebook Users!!!

A six-year-old virus that drains bank accounts is thriving on Facebook, reports Nicole Perlroth of The New York Times.

The virus is spread through phishing messages.

When someone has been phished, their account will automatically send messages or links to a large number of their friends.

These messages or links are usually ads telling friends to check out videos or products. Don't click them.

Facebook is aware of the problem but it isn't taking the matter nearly as seriously as it should be, says Eric Feinberg, founder of the advocacy group Fans Against Kounterfeit Enterprise (FAKE).

Feinberg told The NYTimes, “[Facebook isn't] listening ... we need oversight on this.”

The virus is called Zeus. It's a special type of Trojan horse that has already infected millions of computers. Zeus works by remaining dormant on your computer until you log into your bank account. Once you're in it steals your password and drains your account.

Zeus targets Windows machines. It does not work on Mac OS X or Linux. The only real way to protect yourself from it is to make sure you only click links that come from trusted sources.

The virus is sophisticated too. Sometimes it can even replace your bank's website with its own page in order to get even more information like your social security number so that it can be sold on the black market.

Zeus has been around since 2007 and evidence shows that it is only getting more active. The virus is being hosted from computers controlled by a Russian criminal gang that has been linked to online crimes ranging from malware and identity theft all the way to child pornography.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Goes Official, a Waterproof Galaxy S 4

Today, South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics officially unveiled the Galaxy S4 Active smartphone, a dust- and water-resistant member of the popular Galaxy series of devices.

Just as previously rumored, the new device packs a 5-inch full HD touchscreen display, along with a 1.9GHz quad-core processor inside, and 2GB of RAM.

Aimed mainly at people who live a dynamic lifestyle, the smartphone arrives on the market with qualified protection from dust and water (IP67), so that one could enjoy its features in all conditions.

The phone can resist for up to 30 minutes submerged in 1 meter of water, as it packs not only a water-resistant earphone jack, but also a unique construction that enables users to take photos even when underwater.

“The GALAXY S4 Active is the newest addition to the GALAXY series and is purposefully designed for active users who love the outdoors,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics.

“Samsung has taken the innovative features of the GALAXY S4 and added breakthrough protective design elements to create a device that thrives in an active environment and is built for a lifestyle of travel and exploration.”

The new Galaxy S4 Active packs an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, as well as a 2MP front camera for making video calls.

Furthermore, the device sports 16GB of internal memory, along with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 64GB of additional storage, and a 2600mAh battery inside.

Samsung also included WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity inside the smartphone, along with NFC, GPS receiver, the usual set of sensors, and LTE Cat3, HSPA＋ 42/5.76Mbps, EDGE/GPRS Class 12.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active arrives on the market with Google’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean platform loaded on top, as well as with the features and capabilities that the latest flagship device from the company, the Galaxy S 4, was launched with.

The new mobile phone is set to become available for purchase later this summer. Initially, it will be launched in the United States and Sweden, in three different color options, namely Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare.

Android notebooks? Yep, Intel says, and they'll only cost $200

Intel CEO Paul Otellini last week said touchscreen PCs could debut at prices as low as $200 in the coming months. At the time, he didn't specify what operating system those products would run.

But Dadi Perlmutter, Intel executive vice president and chief product officer, told CNET on Wednesday that notebooks priced at the $200 level will predominantly be Android products running on Intel's Atom mobile processor. Whether Windows 8 PCs hit that price largely depends on Microsoft, he said.

"We have a good technology that enables a very cost-effective price point," Perlmutter said. The price of Windows 8 laptops "depends on how Microsoft prices Windows 8. It may be a slightly higher price point."

We've contacted Microsoft and will update the report when we have more information.

Intel, which makes chips that power the majority of the world's computers and servers, has been pushing new types of computers as it faces a slowdown in that key market. In particular, the company expects convertibles/detachables to gain traction with buyers. As the name suggests, such devices convert between a tablet and a notebook depending on what the user needs at a particular time. A criticism of convertibles has been their higher price point.

Perlmutter didn't specify what the Android notebooks will look like, but it's probable they'll be convertible-type devices. He also noted that he expects the PC market to pick up in the back half of the year and heading into 2014 as new devices become available.

While the cheapest laptops will use Intel's Atom chips, Perlmutter said devices running Intel's mainstream Core line could sell for as low as $399 to $499. And some higher-end Atom-powered devices could also extend to that level.

Meanwhile, Perlmutter said Intel will ship data-only multimode LTE processors by mid-year and multimode voice over LTE and data processors later in 2013. Currently, Intel only offers a single-mode LTE chip, which limits the processor's addressable market. Perlmutter noted that product is mainly used in access points.

By comparison, rival Qualcomm largely dominates the mobile market because it offers multimode LTE chips that are used in popular devices like the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4.

Intel in 2014 will introduce a mobile chip that integrates LTE on the same piece of silicon as the application processor, Perlmutter added. The company has been gaining some traction in smartphones, but volumes remain low. Perlmutter expects higher volumes in 2014.

It's vital for Intel to expand into smartphones and tablets as it core PC market slows. Tech research firms Gartner and IDC earlier this month said first-quarter PC shipments posted an ugly slump in the first three months of the year, the worst since IDC started tracking the figures in 1994. The period marked the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year shipments decline, and the market is expected to slump for all of 2013.

The next PC game-changer: The Android-powered PC

So far, the notebook market is dominated by two players, Windows and OS X, but there's an operating system that could drop into this mix and be highly disruptive — Android.

There's been a lot of discussion bouncing around the tech blogosphere about Intel's plans to get all disruptive and start supporting Android on devices that will cost in the region of $200.

While Microsoft might not be happy about being sidelined by a company that was once one of its biggest supporters, this is exactly what the PC industry needs.

Think this is a huge leap? It isn't. Some of Intel's Atom processors are already compatible with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

PCs aren't selling, and partly, this is down to price. PCs as we know them aren't cheap, and part of the reason for this is how much Microsoft charges for Windows licenses. OEMs tell me that even with the new Windows 8 price cuts, it's hard to compete with free operating systems.

Android is "free". iOS is "free". OS X is "free". (Technically, none are free, but the consumer price is $0.) Windows is not, and increasingly, price-conscious consumers are asking what Microsoft is giving them in exchange for their dollars.

Given the way that buyers (consumers and enterprise alike) have embraced Android on smartphones and tablets — activations of new devices sit at 1.5 million daily, or 45 million every month — it makes sense to give consumers what they want, and put this operating system onto notebooks, convertibles, and hybrid systems.

And why leave it there? Why not go the whole way and put Android onto desktop systems?

But what about Chrome OS? Doesn't this operating system fill in any gap that's potentially left for Android?

I don't think it does, because Chrome OS is all about cloud services and buying into the Google ecosystem. Android on the other hand, is more open and allows users to take more control over their data and apps. While an all-cloud existence works for some, having apps, local storage, and a flourishing Google Play Store are compelling.

And at $200, PCs suddenly become attractive in a way that they weren't before. A PC in every room starts to become a reality, and this is good for both OEMs who sell the hardware, and good for developers who suddenly have a whole new platform to develop for.
