LAHORE - Mired in controversy over an interview of Malik Riaz, Dunya News’ former anchor, Mubasher Lucman, has come up with a video on YouTube, trying to clarify his position in the issue of now infamous footage leak almost two weeks ago. He says that he did nothing wrong, that the interview was not planted, that it was not an attempt to scandalise judiciary and that if any anchor of other news channels wants to question him, he is available. Mubasher claimed he wasn’t naming names or providing details of that day’s events. “I am here to explain myself because I owe it to my family, my children, my friends and most importantly, my viewers,” he said and added, “For those who believe in truth, no explanation is needed; and for those who do not believe in truth, no explanation can be given.” In the 22-odd minutes two-part video, he says that he wants to clear the situation about some objections raised by his critics. He also offered an explanation as to why he was unable to come on air or online soon. “My media channel had suspended me, that’s why I was unable to come on air but now that I have resigned from my channel, I have chosen this very channel [YouTube] – the same where that behind-the-scenes video was leaked – to offer my version of the events.” He said he resigned from Dunya TV on his own will as the channel was under pressure because of him, and added that he was not going anywhere and would continue to reside in Lahore.

ISLAMABAD: PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif wants CJ Abdul Hameed Dogar to resign over allegation that his daughter received undue favour for admission in a private medical college, but he is yet to offer an apology for his own daughter Mariam actually receiving such favour for enrolment in a public sector medical college in 1991, according to a report published in the Weekly Pulse.

That year, Mariam Nawaz’s marks, 765 out of 1,000, in F Sc were too low to get admission in any public sector medical college in Punjab, and the minimum provincial merit was 803/1,000 at Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur.

Mariam wanted admission in King Edward Medical College (KEMC) in hometown Lahore. But with her father as PM and uncle, Shahbaz Sharif, as CM, how could it be that her wish was not realized, the report said. She was first admitted to Army Medical College Rawalpindi, in 1991, and within a couple of months, was migrated to King Edward in clear violation of Migration rules. Mariam’s deprived not just one but two candidates competing for admission in public sector medical colleges. If this was not enough, investigations reveal that one professor at KEMC, Dr Shahnaz Javed of Physiology Dept was transferred from the college for not allowing an illegal increase in her attendance percentage to meet her attendance shortage for lectures in that subject.

Over the years there have been a lot of aspirational attempts by Pakistani students and despite the lack of resources, both financial and equipment, they have managed to find their to way to land amongst the best of the world who come together to participate in the Shell Eco Marathon event.

Team Hammerhead of GIKI recently garnered some much deserved attention of the media with Capital Talk bringing them on as well as several news outlet covering and yet the team yearns for a sponsor.

During the WCG 2012 which was held in Indonesia, Pakistani DOTA players with a handicap of four players against five managed to defeat the Indian DOTA team. To everyone’s amazement, almost all the teams there had sponsors, even the one’s that played worse than Pakistani team whereas our teams went on their own without any sponsors.

The lack of sponsors have always been a crucial setback for Pakistani students, with lack of grant meaning the lack of research and development; which basically sets the pillars for a country to move forward in the technological race.

Pick out any foriegn university and they have their local companies and government paying them for research and development, the universities are directly involved in research and development for future products whereas we, even our companies lack a budget for R&D (research and development), therefore the reason why we’re still unable to completely manufacture even 40 years old Suzuki Mehran or even the CD70 motorcycles.

While the bosses of our local companies are keen on making high profits through massive marketing budgets, they do however like to pocket all of it but the students have the vibe remain alive in them and pursue their projects.

These students of GIKI, have designed a maximum fuel efficiency car, equipped with a 35cc four-stroke engine, and aerodynamic aide to maximize the mileage, which they claim to be around 500-550 kms per liter.

You can check out their Facebook page for additional information and pictures on their ambitious project while they seek for a sponsor, atleast we’re enthusiastic that these folks find one which knows the true power and influence of research and development.

COURTS: Apple has been ordered to pay a $2.25 million fine for misleading consumers over the mobile network capabilities of its new iPad tablet.

Judge Mordecai Bromberg ruled in Melbourne Federal Court yesterday that Apple's branding of its latest iPad implied it could connect with so-called 4G mobile networks in Australia, when it could not. This assertion in the branding was liable to mislead the public and breached consumer law, he found.

In his ruling, Justice Bromberg said the local subsidiary had acted under the "controlling hand" of its US parent Apple in continuing the deceptive conduct while it was aware there were serious concerns about the branding's compliance with Australian consumer law.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, which initiated the court proceedings in March, agreed earlier this month to settle with Apple after the company admitted its new iPad was not compatible with Australia's 4G networks despite being sold here as the iPad "WiFi + 4G". Apple had agreed to pay the fine plus $300,000 towards the commission's legal costs.

The mobile network-capable version of Apple's iPad device is not capable of connecting with Telstra's 4G network.He added it was not possible to say how many Australians were misled by Apple's use of the term 4G, although he said no doubt "many purchasers will have felt decidedly short-changed".

Dubai: Iran said it detected a planned “massive cyber attack” against its nuclear facilities, state television reported.

Iran’s Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi said the country’s arch enemies the United States and Israel, along with Britain, had planned the attack, Reuters reported.

“Based on obtained information, America and the Zionist regime (Israel) along with the MI6 planned an operation to launch a massive cyber attack against Iran’s facilities following the meeting between Iran and the P5+1 in Moscow,” Iran’s English-language Press TV quoted him as saying.

“They still seek to carry out the plan, but we have taken necessary measures,” he added, without elaborating.

Security experts said last month a highly sophisticated computer virus, dubbed “Flame“, had infected computers in Iran and other Middle Eastern countries.

Iranian officials were quick to say the country had defeated the virus, capable of snatching data and eavesdropping on computer users. It was not clear if the cyber attack referred to by Moslehi was “Flame”, or a new virus

The American online news company World Net Daily (WND) claimed that the diplomatic and military relations between the US and Pakistan are on the brink of total disintegration.

The G2 Bulletin, an online news portal run by the WND claimed that the assassination of Abu Yahya al-Libi, the deputy head of Al Qaeda, in a drone attack inside Pakistan proved to be the latest provocation, which deteriorated the relations between the two sides.

US drone strikes have continued in Pakistan for the last few weeks, despite repeated requests by the Pakistani authorities to stop such attacks. Indicating an escalation in the diplomatic standoff prevailing between the two nations, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army refused to meet the US assistant defence secretary Peter Lavoy last week. Lavoy was hoping to persuade the Pakistanis to open the Southern Distribution Network (SDN), the main NATO supply route towards Afghanistan.

Earlier, the US Defence Secretary, Leon Panetta had condemned what he termed as the “lack of co-operation” from the Pakistani authorities in the war against terror. The American authorities justified the drone attacks, claiming that militant groups who conduct attacks against the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan usually flee towards the neighbouring regions of Pakistan, where their hide-outs are located. However, Pakistani officials claim that civilian casualties are mounting from such attacks, and cited an example of a recent drone attack, in which six family members of a suspected militant was killed.

The diplomatic standoff between the Pakistani and American authorities started last year, after 24 soldiers from the Pakistan Army lost their lives in the Salala incident, when NATO helicopter gunships mistook an army outpost for a Taliban training base and fired air-to-surface missiles towards it. Although the American officials acknowledged that the strike was a mistake, they refused to apologize over the incident, prompting Pakistan to close the SDN.

Mr James apprised PTI leadership over the efforts and procedures of IRI for conducting independent and credible surveys in Pakistan. He also referred the recent IRI survey in which PTI topped the list of popular parties in Pakistan both at the national as well as provincial level. It is worth mentioning that in recent survey of IRI, PTI remained top with 31 % votes on the national level and 49 % votes in KPK and with 35 % votes in Balochistan. ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Husain Haqqani, the embattled Pakistani ambassador to the United States, resigned Tuesday in the wake of accusations that he had sought U.S. help to rein in the powerful Pakistani military after the U.S. raid in May to kill Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

The accusations center on a memo that Mansoor Ijaz, a U.S. businessman of Pakistani origin, said Haqqani asked him to have it delivered to Adm. Mike Mullen, then the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. According to Ijaz, the memo asked for U.S. help in heading off a possible military-led coup and promised concessions in return.

The accusations, which Haqqani denies, created a political storm in Pakistan, where anti-U.S. feelings run high and Haqqani is considered by some to be an apologist for the United States.

He has also made enemies among some in the military for his criticisms of the army before he became ambassador. Some analysts believe that the military's leaders, who wield the real power in the country, pushed for the government to oust Haqqani.

Some U.S. officials Tuesday expressed concern that Haqqani's exit could complicate attempts by the United States and Pakistan to repair badly strained relations.

Political commentators said President Asif Ali Zardari, who considered Haqqani a close aide, appeared to have decided to distance himself from the controversy for political considerations.

Zardari and his party hope to maintain power past elections in 2013, and analysts say he was likely to be reacting to the military, opposition figures and the country's aggressive media, which had all begun to pummel him for a lack of action on the memo.

Arif Nizami, editor of the English-language daily newspaper Pakistan Today said by handing over the investigations to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, an adversary of Haqqani, Zardari had already indicated that he was wary of tensions that exist between the civilian government and the military.

The matter first surfaced last month in a Financial Times column by Ijaz, who claimed he had delivered the memo on the instructions of a senior Pakistani diplomat.

Haqqani supporters have questioned Ijaz's credibility and suggested the scandal is an elaborate setup by Pakistani intelligence.

United States has said that talks with Pakistan regarding resumption of Nato supplies are underway, however added that no break through took place as yet.

We are continuing conversations at a political level, but I don’t have any progress to report, State Department’s Spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters during a daily press briefing on late Wednesday.

Replying to a query regarding political situation in Pakistan, she said, “We spoke about this a little bit yesterday. We’ve been able to work with the Pakistani Government throughout this period. They’ve now announced plans of their own for their own political transition, so our hope and expectation is that we can continue to try to work through these issues.”

Victoria Nuland said that US have seen cross-border militancy for more than a decade.

She said “it is important to have action against terror on the Pakistan side, on the Afghan side, and for Afghanistan, Pakistan and ISAF to continue to work together.”

Regarding the 2014 transition plan, Nuland said that US is expecting ISAF forces will begin to flow home as Afghan forces take on lead responsibility for security.

“We’ve seen the same press reports that you have. I don’t have anything to add there or any information specific to us,” she commented on Hosni Mubarak’s health.

RAWALPINDI: An anti-corruption court in Rawalpindi issued arrest warrants on Thursday against seven persons, including the former Bahria Town chief Malik Riaz and his son Ali Riaz, in a land fraud case

DawnNews reported.

All accused were absent from the hearing, earning the ire of and resulting in the issue of arrest warrants by the Special Court of Justice Chaudhry Ameer Mohammad Khan.

The accused, against whom the warrants were issued included Malik Riaz, Ali Riaz, Muhammad Ashfaq, Melad Bibi, Iqbal Hussain Shah, Sheikh Sajid ur Rehman and Iqbal.

The next hearing has been scheduled for June 25 and the court has ordered all accused to appear for hearing.

Earlier in October 2011, an anti corruption court of Rawalpindi had issued arrest warrants for Malik Riaz and Ali Riaz after the anti corruption establishment (ACE) of Punjab submitted the evidence against the tycoon and his associates in an alleged fraud case registered in 2009 and involving 1,401 kanals of land near Rawat.

Malik Riaz himself is the complainant in four civil suits pertaining to land disputes pending in the courts of Rawalpindi and is facing 57 criminal and civil cases regarding land grabbing or company matters in the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench and in the sessions courts of Rawalpindi.

Ephedrine case: Non-bailable arrest warrant issued for Shahabuddin

Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) Magistrate Shafqatullah Khan on Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of Pakistan Peoples Party’s candidate for the prime minister’s post, Makhdoom Shahabuddin for his involvement in the ephedrine case, Express News reported.

The same warrant was also issued for the arrest of the son of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Member of National Assembly (MNA), Ali Musa Gilani. The court ordered for the accused to be arrested and presented in court within a week.

During the hearing at the magistrate’s court, ANF Commander Brigadier Faheem and Investigating Officer (IO) Abid Zulfiqar presented a report stating they had evidence and witness testimonies proving the direct involvement of former health minister Shahabuddin and Member of National Assembly (MNA) Ali Musa Gilani in providing illegal quota of banned chemicals to a laboratory in Multan.

Forwarding a request to be an immunity-granted witness, former director general (DG) Health Dr Rasheed Jumma verified in his statement to the investigation team that it was Shahabuddin who approved the 2,500kg ephedrine quota allotment to Berlex Lab International and 6,500kg to Danas Pharma.

He added that Ali Musa Gilani pressed for the allotment of the quota as well.

The magistrate approved the request of Brig Faheem and IO Abid and issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against the two accused.
