USSA and UCSA Congresses at UCLA and UCI

This year's United States Students Association's annual congress will be held on UCLA's campus July 15-18th and the University of California Student Association's congress will be at UCI August 12-15th.

As you may all know, UCSA and USSA hold annual Congresses each year in which each student association picks the issues it will advocate for on behalf of students. We are pleased to announce that UCLA will be hosting this year's USSA Congress, while UCI will host UCSA Congress.

Each year UCLA's External Vice President's Office sends a delegation to represent our awesome university. Below are two links that will guide you to an interest page. Please fill out the sheet for whatever congress you are interested in. We will email out applications to those that stated they were interested.

      If you're interested in getting more involved in student government, apply to be on USAC President Jasmine Hill's staff for the 2010-2011 school year. Applications are due Thursday, May 28th (after they will be accepted on a rolling basis) and can be sent in via email or dropped off at the President's office in Kerckhoff 317. Pres. Hill is also responsible for making Presidential Appointments to important committees within the Undergraduate Student Association. Receiving a Presidential Appointment is a great way to gain further insight into student government and the inner operations of our University.

ASU OUTREACH COMMITTEE
      The Afrikan Student Union Outreach Committee is a great opporutnity for leadership development and involvement within our community. The Outreach Committee works with the Internal Public Relations Coordinator in connecting ASU members to resources and opportunities in the community and representing the voice of Afrikan students on UCLA's campus. I am looking for 8-10 dedicated, outgoing and organized individuals for this committee.

A beautiful thing is planned... a Carter-Huggins plaque hanging ceremony in Campbell Hall. It is being done by a class of UCLA students Activism in the 60's , taught by Mary Corey, History Prof.

The ceremony will be on May 25th at 12 noon. ASU, let's be there as a family to support the dedication of our fallen brothers.

SHAPE 1^st Annual Showcase

Greetings ASU Family!

This Spring quarter our very own SHAPE Program will be hosting its 1st
annual Showcase with singing, dancing, stepping, poetry and a fashion show.
We are reaching out to the community for support with volunteering and our
clothes drive donation for our students for the Fashion Show. We are
currently accepting volunteers for all positions and to help with our
students performance skills as well as the day-of activities. The Showcase
will be May 28, 2010 on the Hill with co-programming with ORL and the Field
Trip Component.

Where to Donate:

Donations will be accepted in the SHAPE cubicle until May 14, 2010 please
place them in a bag or box pre-washed for our students

Writing Success Program Scholarship

The Writing Success Program is honored to officially announce the Janet Brown Memorial Scholarship, which consists of three $1,000 non-renewable scholarship that will be awarded at the end of the 2009-2010 academic school year at the Community Programs Office Banquet .

Completed applications must be turned in to the mailbox of the Writing Success Program, which is located in the Student Retention Center Suite 105 in the Student Activities Center. The deadline for the scholarship application is Wednesday May 19, 2010 at 5:00pm. Applications can be turned in any time prior to the deadline, but late applications will not be accepted.

Janet Brown was the founder and director of the Writing Success Program, a program that has been part of the Student Retention Center since 2002. Janet believed strongly in the mission of the Student Retention Center (SRC), particularly the importance of holistic student empowerment and student leadership, outcomes that the SRC is committed to. As stated on the SRC website, our projects are designed to assist undergraduate students with academic difficulties and cultural and social transitions. We recognize how vital it is to have students not only empower themselves, but to uplift their communities by doing so.

The Writing Success Program aims to complement the efforts of the other Student Retention Center projects by developing students' critical thinking through the writing process and empowering students in both their writing and thinking abilities - an empowerment that carries over to their community work. Many students and alumni credit the program, and Janet Brown in particular, as being both supportive and influential in helping them find their voices through writing and in pursuing their passions.

Before she passed away in April 2009, Janet was working on a novel that centered on the idea of the importance of preserving culture in their indigenous communities. As a result, in acknowledgement of the value of preserving culture, the Janet Brown Scholarship hopes to award students who are actively working to promote and preserve culture in their communities.

Additionally, due to the pressure of the economic crisis, it has been increasingly hard for students to continue their education while doing this community work. As such, in an effort to foster the retention of students, the Janet Brown Scholarship hopes to reward students in financial need who, despite these obstacles, have committed themselves to preserving the culture of their community.

ASU's volunteer turn out for this election was incredible to say the least. From alumni to current students, this year Black Bruins served the SF! campaign on numerous levels, which helped result in SF! taking majority seats in USAC, and ASU's very own Jasmine Hill elected as the next USAC President! Congratulations ASU Family, SF!'s victory is all of our victory!

Unity: Something to Hold Onto

Come out Tuesday, May 11 (7th week) for an event surrounded by the theme of unity. Hosted by Black Campus Ministries, this event involves multiples orgs within our community that will be performing their interpretations of unity. There will be dance, singing, spoken word, visual art, and much more. The night will be a wonderful expression of unity as we all come together and the year comes to a close. You don't want to miss this! This event is especially important as we have united this week under Students First! The display of unity as we supported this campaign was much needed and brought us together. Unity is something that we could all use!

Save Cal Grants Rally

ASU is marching in solidarity w/ other on campus groups to ask the Governor to prioritize the needs of students.

In case you don't know, Governor Schwarzenegger has eliminated Cal Grants in his proposed budget from January. Since then, Governor Schwarzenegger has said, "I will stick to my January budget." Unfortunately, this would mean that tens of thousands of students around California would have to drop out of college simply because they cannot afford it. With the recent 32% increase in UC tuition, this spells out a very similar consequence for hundreds of our fellow Bruins at UCLA, and it's time for students to take action to stop this horrible budget.

Join us for our Save Cal Grants Rally in Downtown Los Angeles, a rally being organized in conjunction with other UC schools in Southern California. We will be marching to the Governor's office in Downtown LA this Wednesday, May 12 at 12:30pm from Pershing Square, asking the Governor to change his budget before he releases it again to the State Legislature by the May Revise deadline. We will leave UCLA at 11:45am from Ackerman Turnaround and return to UCLA after the rally by 3:30pm.

When asked what motivated him to establish the scholarship, Mr. Densmore responded: "The purpose of the gifts is to give back some of the good fortune I've received. My early influences were the great jazz musicians, many of whom are of African American descent, and I feel my path of late is one of reciprocity."

AWC would like to thank all of you who attended our "Take 7" on Friday! It was extremely insightful and so much great conversation was shared in the space. California's anti–gay marriage intitiative Proposition 8 ignited a debate within Los Angeles' African American gay and lesbian communities: Should black same-sex couples come out to family and friends to help garner support for gay marriage, or should they continue to take a "don't ask, don't tell" approach?

"Some in the community were becoming more supportive of gay sexuality as an identity status that could exist alongside a strong racial-group affinity. Others were holding fast to religious and cultural ideologies that reduced gay sexuality to an immoral behavior and thus not a valid identity status," says Mignon R. Moore, a UCLA sociologist and professor of African American studies whose research — along with the work of more than two dozen other scholars — appears a new book that sheds light on black Los Angeles.

"Black Los Angeles: American Dreams and Racial Realities" (NYU Press, April 2010), co-edited by Darnell Hunt, director of UCLA's Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, and the center's assistant director, Ana-Christina Ramón, delves into the long and rich history of African Americans in Los Angeles and presents a snapshot of contemporary issues affecting the community.

"African Americans have played important and pivotal roles in Los Angeles' history," Hunt says. "As our book demonstrates, African Americans have had a powerful impact on the development of the city — from being part of the first settlers in 1781, through the period of the region's tremendous growth, to the present day."

"Black Los Angeles is and has always been a space of profound contradictions," Hunt writes in the book. "Just as Los Angeles has come to symbolize the complexities of the early twenty-first–century city, so too has Black Los Angeles come to embody the complex realities of race in so-called 'colorblind' times."

"Black Los Angeles" is the culmination of eight years of research the center conducted on African American communities in the region.

UCLA Bunche Center honors scholar Harry Edwards as 2010 Thurgood Marshall Speaker

Harry Edwards, a UC Berkeley professor emeritus of sociology and the activist who spurred black athletes to raise their fists in a "black power" protest at the 1968 Olympic Games, will deliver the 2010 Thurgood Marshall lecture at UCLA on Thursday, April 29.

The event, organized by the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA, will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by Edwards' lecture at 7 p.m. in the Grand Horizon Room at UCLA's Covel Commons. The free lecture is co-sponsored by Fox Studios' diversity unit.

Each year, a prominent leader in the African American community is asked to deliver the Thurgood Marshall Lecture on Law and Human Rights. The event honors the legacy and contributions of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, whose record of civil rights advocacy is inextricably linked to the African American struggle for social and economic justice. Past lecturers have included civil rights activist and former Black Panther chairperson Elaine Brown, law professor and author Lani Guinier, NAACP chairperson Julian Bond and late UCLA alumnus and noted attorney Johnnie L. Cochran Jr.

A star athlete at East St. Louis High School in Illinois, Edwards was awarded an athletic scholarship to San Jose State University and graduated four years later. He subsequently was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and a University Fellowship to Cornell University, where he completed master's and doctoral degrees in sociology.

Spurred by the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Edwards started the Olympic Project for Human Rights, which worked against racism in sports and society. Edwards believed that protest efforts would dramatize the racial inequities and barriers confronting African Americans.

For the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Edwards advocated a boycott by black athletes and other forms of protests. During the medal ceremony for the 200-meter race, gold medalist Tommie Smith and bronze medalist John Carlos, both African Americans, raised their fists in a black power salute as international photographers snapped pictures. The photo would eventually become an iconic image of the civil rights movement.

The author of "The Revolt of the Black Athlete," Edwards also has advocated for more African American athletes to pursue professional career paths and for more blacks to be represented in sports management. He has been a consultant to the NFL's San Francisco 49ers and the NBA's Golden State Warriors.

The Watts Towers Common Ground Initiative: Art, Migrations, Development

This innovative conference and festival will highlight the extraordinary Watts Towers of Sabato (Simon/Sam) Rodia, Italian immigrant and single-minded artist, who wanted to do "something big." His Towers in Watts, a National Historic Landmark and internationally-renowned icon, are both a personal artistic expression and collective symbol of Nuestro Pueblo—Our Town/Our People. This Initiative seeks to refocus attention on the Watts Towers, renew our commitment to art in human and community development, and celebrate the common ground of the Watts Towers as an inspiring symbol of creativity, sustained resolve in adversity, and positive transformation. A consortium of sponsors* will launch this Initiative in 2010 with an international conference at UCLA, and public events throughout the city, in a festival of art, film, theater, music, communal food tables, and tours, with the goal of addressing modes of sustaining art, community development, the common good, as well as promoting hospitality and partnership across geographic, social, and other boundaries.

Paper/presentation proposals must be submitted by e-mail only and include:

1. One-paragraph bio-bibliography or resumé (with name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address, telephone number)

2. Paper title and one-page abstract addressing one or more of the five themes below as they apply specifically to the Watts Towers or to related areas in other cultural contexts (please indicate to which of the themes your paper pertains):

Admit Weekend's Unity Rally for ASU

We will be having a unity rally to jump-start Admit Weekend on Wednesday March 31, 2010. This will occur in Bruin Plaza from 12pm to 2pm. During this rally we will review the history of Admit Weekend, have guest speakers, singers, dancers, and spoken word all in order to hype up the campus for the incoming freshmen fall 2010.

The rally is being held to bring together the UCLA community prior to the arrival of the admits and develop a sense of cohesiveness on campus. The Afrikan Student Union has continuously strived towards increasing the yield of African American
students into UCLA. The development of entities such as the Ralph J. Bunche center for Africa American Studies, Academic Advancement Program, Academic Supports Program, and SHAPE, all reflect ASU¹s dedication to increasing the African American population at UCLA and support for students once they are admitted. The fight for greater African American representation on campus still continues and Admit
Weekend is a reflection of this struggle. It is more important than ever that we make the admits feel welcomed on our campus and ensure that they are welcomed.

ISMs Project

What is the ISM's Project?

The "ISM's Project" is an event where students can exhibit an educational project by presenting it in an artistic genre/medium of choice. The project focuses on a specific ISM selected by the student, and each project should address an issue of diversity and/or social justice. The goal is to educate the audience on the ISM and to enlighten the audience so that they are able to experience that ISM from the personal perspective of the presenter or from the perspective of the Agent or that target group of that ISM. Each ISM project should capture and connect the different experiences of pride, power, privilege, and/or oppression related to the ISM

How Are IMS's Presented?

Students will do research to present facts and/or present their personal experience or the personal experience of others through creative freedom of expression. Students are allowed to use one or multiple genres/mediums. Performances are to be 10 minutes or less. Past projects have been slideshows, short videos, spoken word, photography, skits, dance, interviews, speeches and MORE!

Senator Feinstein's Los Angeles office is looking for highly motivated college students for internship opportunities during this summer.

About the internship position:

Tasks and Responsibilities: Interns support our Field Representatives and Staff Assistants in drafting memos to the Senator, scheduling or attending meetings with staff, constituent letters, conducting background research, phone calls, document requests, morning press clippings, research projects, and attending events with the Senator when she is in the area.

Criteria: For many citizens, contact with Senator Feinstein's office is their only experience with an elected representative. Therefore, we need polite and friendly students with some familiarity with the American political system and current events. Additionally, strong writing and editing skills are a plus.

Hours: For the summer, we require a commitment of 3 full days per week for three months. We are very conducive to working with students' class schedules.

Scholarship Opportunity for High School Students

The Posse Foundation identifies, recruits and trains outstanding young leaders from urban public high schools and sends them to colleges and universities in multicultural teams, or "Posses" of 10, with four-year full-tuition scholarships.

The Posse Scholarship is a leadership-merit scholarship, it is not a minority-based or a financial-need scholarship, as such, we look for outstanding students engaged in a variety of leadership activities, beyond just "student government" or athletics. Although we do not have a GPA requirement, Posse Scholars demonstrate academic potential, resilience and a proven track record of accessing resources.

Academic potential is key, since our partner institutions are top-tier universities.

Students are typically nominated during the spring of their junior year, and begin the application process (also known as Posse's Dynamic Assessment Process) in the fall. Once nominated, students attend a series of fun, interactive interviews designed to see how they engage in a group. The field is slowly narrowed until 20 finalists are selected for each of our eight partner institutions. These finalists will attend one last meeting, and 10 Scholars are then selected out of that final pool.

One particular partner institution, Bucknell University, recruits students for a "Civic Engagement" Posse. This Posse is just like any other, except there is a slight emphasis on Social Justice/Civic Engagement issues. As such, Civic Engagement Scholars' leadership may especially focus on activism, social justice, inequality, etc.

The Diversity Requirement:
The diversity requirement helps to ground students in the realities of a multicultural, transnational, global society, and provides tools for studying the complexity of diverse communities defined by characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic background, religion, sexual orientation, age, and disability and are relevant to the understanding of these dynamics in contemporary society and culture in the U.S. and around the world. As part of but not in addition to the existing General Education requirement, students must take one course in the GE Foundations of Society and Culture that focuses in a central and substantial way on issues, theories, and methods relevant to analyzing and understanding inter-group dynamics and diversity in its broadest sense.

Proposal:
Change the name of the Foundations of Society and Culture, GE Requirement TO Foundation of Society, Culture and Diversity. Amend GE description to include definition and importance of diversity (look to Arts and Architecture Diversity Requirement as an example). Amend course requirements to require students to take 1 course in diversity for the third five-unit course

18-month Academy for Black Men

The University of Pennsylvania is launching an 18-month Academy here focused on preparing Black males for admission to Ph.D. programs in education immediately upon completion of their undergraduate studies. They will begin the Academy this fall with 10 Black males who are in their junior year of college.. Check it out here: http://www.gse. upenn.edu/ blackmen

Each Academy participant will receive a 4-day all-expense paid visit to Philadelphia this fall; opportunities for meaningful engagement with the dean, faculty, graduate students, and Black male alumni; free enrollment in a 3-month Kaplan GRE Prep Course (for which Penn is paying $1,200 per participant) ; a current Black male Ph.D. student who will mentor him through the application process; and an application fee waiver when he applies for Fall 2011 admission to Penn (valued at $85). Most importantly, those who are admitted to our Ph.D. Programs two years from now will be fully funded for their entire 3-4 years of doctoral study.

The last few weeks have been an especially trying time for Black students and other students of color at the University of California. As we continue to put pressure on our administrations, please continue to give your support by writing letters, participating in protests and demonstrations, and staying current on all actions taken against students of color. This past Friday, February 26 and Tuesday, March 2, 2010 the Afrikan Student Union at UCLA along with other minority group organizations demonstrated against the University's lack of prioritizing the needs of students of color. If our demands are not met in a timely manner we do plan on further action. More information will be disseminated as events develop.

On behalf on ASU staff, we understand that the attacks against Black students at the UC can be very threatening and creates a hostile and intimidating learning environment. We encourage all Black students to regularly meet with an ASP counselor (ASU's Academic Support Program located in SAC 105) to discuss ways to deal with these issues of racial intolerance, in addition to help with your overall academic and personal development.

Letter from UCSD Ethnic Studies Chair

Dear Chancellor Fox:

As a Full Professor who has spent her whole 20-year career at UCSD, as
Chair of the Ethnic Studies Department, and as a woman faculty of color
who has faced many indignities over the years, I write to ask you to
exercise your leadership today to declare a state of emergency and close
down the campus--in recognition of the shattered state that the campus is
in.

Since the "Compton Cookout" incident, many students and faculty of color
and their allies have devoted countless hours to do your/our job of
teaching about racism on campus and of ensuring that UCSD lives up to its
mission as a place of learning--in the most profound sense of that word.
Their labor--physical, mental, emotional, intellectual--goes
uncompensated, unrecognized, and even mocked by the largely apathetic UCSD community. Because they have had to put aside their study, their
teaching, their research, their writing, to do the university work, they
will again bear the brunt of the costs of being at a university that views
"diversity", at best, as a benign celebration of multiculturalism and
"economic empowerment."

As many of us face down today in the shadow of a noose, we ask that you
share in this labor and that you ask the ENTIRE community at UCSD to
share in this labor. To not do so will be to benefit, once again, from
the labor of the marginalized and maligned at UCSD.

Every crisis can bring forth great change. You have an opportunity to
participate in this movement of change in a real and fundamental way.
Please do so, or we risk a campus that will be deeply divided for years to
come. The campus will be shut down, one way or another. It'd be in our
best interest that you are the one to shut it down.

Letter to UCSD Administration from UCLA Afrikan Student Union Chairperson

Hello All:

It is with a heavy heart and an angered spirit that I write this email to urge the UCSD Administration to take immediate action on their campus. It pains me to write to hired student affairs staffs on both campuses, University Chancellors, and concerned students about the importance of at least meeting the basic needs of any student -safety. To receive a phone call at 1am this morning about a noose being hung from the UCSD library with no complaints filed by hired library staff, formal police reports filed by the school, and business to continue "as usual", is disheartening and mind-blowing. To furthermore receive a report that neither the administration or UC presidents' office has launched a full investigation of this issue despite the fact that most students feel that their lives are threatened and that their campus or the UC will do nothing to protect them is incredibly sad and questions the competence of the UC officials. I am outraged that as chairperson of ASU at UCLA, I have to write to another campus to explain how my own students at UCLA have to come to grips with the fact that they are apart of an institution that "hates black people"--as many have said.

We are calling for the closure of UCSD classes until a full investigation has been conducted--the basic things (run the library tape, see which places in or near San Diego sale nooses, investigate the Koala newspaper office, etc.) and diversity needs are addressed aggressively. We are also calling for the expulsion of the offending parties and the firing of library staff. This will not be taken lightly.

As I have informed my chancellor--set the tone for your school and create a climate to where this behavior will not be tolerated.

The ideas have been brought forth, the vision has been messaged, and the students have been vocal, now it's time for you all to do your job and be committed to the well-being and development of all students.

3 Teachers Suspended over Black History Month

Three teachers at a South Los Angeles elementary school have been suspended for allegedly encouraging students to celebrate O.J. Simpson, Dennis Rodman and RuPaul during Black History Month, officials said Wednesday.

Children at Wadsworth Avenue Elementary School were carrying pictures of the men at a parade Friday on the school playground, said Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Gayle Pollard-Terry.

She said Supt. Ramon C. Cortines learned about the incident Tuesday and had the teachers, who are white, pulled from their classrooms for the duration of an investigation. The suspension is without pay for the first three days.

"The superintendent believes there are better choices," Pollard-Terry said.

Other students were carrying pictures of President Obama and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The teachers have not been identified and could not be reached for comment.

District officials did not provide specific details about what the teachers did, saying the investigation was still ongoing.

Some community leaders aren't satisfied with the suspensions and are calling for the dismissal of the instructors, who teach first, second and fourth grades.

"I just can't fathom what these teachers were thinking of except to make a mockery of African American history," said Leon Jenkins, president of the Los Angeles branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People.

L.C. "Chris" Strudwick-Turner of the Los Angeles Urban League likened the episode to a series of racially provocative incidents at UC San Diego, where a Feb. 15 off-campus party mocked Black History Month.

"These kinds of things build on each other," she said. "When something like that happens in [San Diego] and there is no immediate consequence, that emboldens others. That's why I was glad that LAUSD took them out of the classroom right away."

Pollard-Terry said Simpson, Rodman and RuPaul were included on a list of prominent African Americans approved by the school for study during Black History Month.

She said the three teachers were believed to have suggested at least some of those names for the list.

The district dispatched a human relations and ethnic diversity team Wednesday to help the school prepare lessons that are "more appropriate for Black History Month," she added.

Strudwick-Turner said the Los Angeles Urban League has been told by people who attended the parade Friday that the teachers had been asked to instruct their classes on a notable African American and that they had selected Simpson, Rodman and RuPaul.

UCSD Black Student Union Address! State of Emergency!

It is with crucial concern and urgency that I write this letter to bring to your attention the state of the campus climate for African-American students at UC San Diego. The University is allowing the African-American students to be racially demoralized by a group of students on this campus. The most recent incident was February 18, 2010 between 11:00pm and midnight a group of students on the UC San Diego Student Run Television Program (SR-TV) making statements in support of the racial "Compton cookout" party That took place this past Monday February 15, 2010. These students insulted the African-American community by stating "you ungrateful niggers...". It is a toxic environment for African-American students on this campus. The SR-TV is funded by the University so in fact, it is using taxpayers dollars to degrade and demoralize the African-American students and other underrepresented backgrounds as well. Again, this is a STATE OF EMERGENCY the University is in direct violation of its "Principles of Community". Students do not feel safe on this campus and it is affecting their everyday lives. We need direct action from the University immediately.

Those students involved in the shameful racist acts should be suspended from the University for spreading such hateful messages about the African-American community to the University campus-wide and with the University's funding and approval. These types of acts will not be tolerated. The Black Student Union calls you to support us in this struggle to heal the underrepresented student community and to create a healthier campus climate at UC San Diego. Students are exhausted and tired of bailing this institution out by developing our own student initiated outreach, retention, and yield efforts and maintaining and sustaining them with our own student fees. When will the University do its part? Time for change is long overdue it's the University's turn to create that change.

Please understand that this tragedy has marked UC San Diego as a racist University and consequently damaged our student initiated yield efforts we worked on this entire academic year. We demand as a result of this dilemma the University take full responsibility for these actions occurring and take direct action to heal a community that has been scarred. Description
February marks a very important month in American society. No, i'm not referring to Valentines day or Presidents day. I'm talking about Black History month. As a time to celebrate and in hopes of showing respect, the Regents community cordially invites you to its very first Compton Cookout.

For guys: I expect all males to be rockin Jersey's, stuntin' up in ya White T (XXXL smallest size acceptable), anything FUBU, Ecko, Rockawear, High/low top Jordans or Dunks, Chains, Jorts, stunner shades, 59 50 hats, Tats, etc.

For girls: For those of you who are unfamiliar with ghetto chicks-Ghetto chicks usually have gold teeth, start fights and drama, and wear cheap clothes - they consider Baby Phat to be high class and expensive couture. They also have short, nappy hair, and usually wear cheap weave, usually in bad colors, such as purple or bright red.
They look and act similar to Shenaynay, and speak very loudly, while rolling their neck, and waving their finger in your face. Ghetto chicks have a very limited vocabulary, and attempt to make up for it, by forming new words, such as "constipulated", or simply cursing persistently, or using other types of vulgarities, and making noises, such as "hmmg!", or smacking their lips, and making other angry noises,grunts, and faces.
The objective is for all you lovely ladies to look, act, and essentially take on these "respectable" qualities throughout the day.

Several of the regents condos will be teaming up to house this monstrosity, so travel house to house and experience the various elements of life in the ghetto.

We will be serving 40's, Kegs of Natty, dat Purple Drank- which consists of sugar, water, and the color purple , chicken, coolade, and of course Watermelon. So come one and come all, make ya self before we break ya self, keep strapped, get yo shine on, and join us for a day party to be remembered- or not.

I don't think they know who they are targeting because we are not going to sit back and let them get away with this. After they realized that the Black Student Union was aware of the event page on facebook they deleted it and any trace of it. Lucky, we were thinking smart and took a snap shot of the page before they deleted. Also, they have pictures of themselves in Black face for their Halloween costumes to be "NBA" athletes.

I feel like the Principles of Community have been completely violated and it angers me to know they have access to my student fees to fund whatever events, parties, etc they would like (There are members of PIKE on AS).

UC LEADS (Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees), a prestigious two-year, UC systemwide program for promising sophomores and transfer students (planning to graduate in 2012) interested in pursuing graduate degrees and research careers in the science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields.

UC LEADS Scholars receive substantial financial support and engage in research under the supervision of a faculty mentor during the academic years and summers. They also participate in seminars to assist them in identifying and applying to graduate programs, financing their graduate education, seeking extramural fellowships, preparing and presenting poster sessions, etc. The scholars also attend and present their work at national professional society meetings. Minority Young Leaders Volunteer Abroad

Call for Applications from Young Leaders of Minority Backgrounds: get human rights and development fieldwork experience in Cambodia, Uganda and Senegal!

One World is currently recruiting for our 2010 Summer Programs in Cambodia, Uganda and Senegal. We are looking for young leaders (ages 18-25) from minority and indigenous backgrounds with an interest in international human rights and development.

The eight-week Young Leaders Program consists of a one-week training in the host country and a seven-week internship at a local or national NGO focusing on various areas within human rights and development. The program runs from June 1 - August 1, 2010 with a pre-departure orientation in Washington, DC on May 28, 2010. The program fee is $3,500 which covers round-trip airfare from DC to the host-country, housing, emergency medical insurance, food and water stipend, and training and other program-related costs. The program fee does not cover visa or vaccination costs. Full scholarships are available for participants pursuing public health through a partnership with the Global Health Fellowship Program, and partial need-based scholarships are also available. One World provides guidance and assistance to all participants to successfully fund the program fee through individual donations, institutional grants and other means.

We are also looking for one Group Leader (age 26-35) for each country program to be in charge of overseeing the One World Young Leaders Program. Like Young Leaders, Group Leaders participate in a seven-week internship placement. In addition, the Group Leader will be the primary person responsible for ensuring that the One World country program runs smoothly. The program fee for Group Leaders is $1,750.

University of Michigan Summer Research Opportunity Program 2010

The University of Michigan Summer Research Opportunity Program (U-M SROP) offers outstanding undergraduates underrepresented in their field of study the opportunity to conduct intensive research across a variety of disciplines. The goal is to prepare students for advanced studies in a Ph.D. program at U-M.

SROP allows undergraduates the opportunity to work on graduate level research projects with faculty. Students work with faculty mentors either on an individual basis or as part of a research team. Research teams may also include graduate students, research scientists, and other SROP students.

In addition, all participants engage in a series of academic, professional, and personal development seminars. Participants present their research at a concluding CIC-SROP conference and a U-M symposium. A central goal of the program is that participants develop realistic groundwork for advanced study, helping them prepare for graduate degrees at U-M Another outcome is that students build professional and personal networks that support their interest in joining the academic research community

(1) "Unity in the Community" (This is the critical issue that we choose last year at ABC to tackle, therefore we will be discussing what it means & a plan of action to make our interpretation a reality.)
(2) Ideas for 2010's Critical Issue. (In this section will be analyzing how the critical issue has been done to this point and trying to re-vamp it to make it more specific and measurable)

You can be part of the commission that redistricts California. In 2008, voters approved a citizen commission for redistricting to eliminate excessive gerrymandering. The commission is an equal bet for anyone who applies. I think they are doing some sort of lottery, etc.

UC Davis School of Law

The King Hall Outreach Program (KHOP) was established in 2001. By launching a new academic pre-law program, the Pre-Law Boot Camp, UC Davis hopes to extend an even wider net to undergraduate students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds or who have shown a commitment to underserved communities.

Pre-Law Boot Camp: The program consists of a series of full-day workshops to prepare undergraduate students for the law school application process and expose them to diverse legal fields. King Hall is targeting students from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly juniors.

King Hall Outreach Program (KHOP): This program is designed for students with high academic potential who are currently completing their second year of undergraduate studies. Participants will learn about the application process, the LSAT, and law school and law practice. Applicants must provide evidence of educational or economic disadvantage. KHOP is an intensive law school preparation program requiring both a summer and academic year commitment during the student's junior and senior years (the summer commitment involves one four-week session each summer in July and August, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.).

Eligibility

You currently attend a four-year college as a sophomore or have two years before graduating from your undergraduate institution. (This includes students who will be transferring from a community college to a four year college or university beginning Fall 2009.)
You currently attend college or will be transferring to a college within the greater Sacramento area (no more than 3 hours from Sacramento) by Fall 2009.
You are considered a first-generation college student (no parent, legal guardian or sibling has a bachelor's degree) OR You come from an economically disadvantaged background (200% federal poverty guidelines)

Santa Clara University School of Law

The four-week program is designed to better prepare students from disadvantaged backgrounds to the realities of law school and help them to be more competitive law school applicants. Students stay in the dorms on campus along with law student mentors, attend daily classes and workshops taught by law faculty and staff, participate in special events on campus, and visit law schools and court facilities. The program covers all related expenses, including room and board; however, participants are required to pay for their own transportation to and from the program. Villanova Law School (operated in conjunction with Lincoln University)

Pepper Hamilton National Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program

The program is open to students from groups that are underrepresented in the legal profession who have completed either their freshman or sophomore years. Those who have completed their junior year will be admitted if space permits. Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or above. Preference is also given to students who have come from a disadvantaged background or who have overcome significant odds to achieve. Students will receive a stipend of $150 per week. The program will run for four weeks, usually beginning the first week of June. Exact dates will be posted by January 2008. Classes will be held at the Villanova University School of Law, and students will reside in dormitories on the Villanova University campus. Participating students will receive six academic credits for successful completion of 1) Legal Problem Solving and Skills Development, and 2) Critical Reasoning. Other components include: writing for publication; advocacy and listening skills; time management and study skills; exposure to the legal profession; and law school application and financial aid process.

CLEO Sophomore Summer Institute

For the past seven years, highly motivated students have competed for admission into the Sophomore Summer Institute (SSI), the premiere pre-law program for undergraduate students seeking one day to attend law school. Hosting up to 30 students annually, the program is structured to alert participants to the challenges of law school admission and provide instructions on how to build the competitive credentials necessary to gain admission. The training acquired in the curriculum also enables participants to enhance academic performance throughout the remainder of their undergraduate experience. Participation in SSI is a critical initial investment in their future as a law student and the gains are exponential.

Eligibility

To apply you must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate institution, have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and must have completed 45 credit hours by the time you submit your application, while currently enrolled in 15 credit hours to be completed by the time the program starts in June 2010.

Supported by the U.S. Department of Education's Thurgood Marshall Legal Opportunity Program, SSI is open to students who are minority, low-income or otherwise disadvantaged. Meals and lodging are provided during this program. Finally, because CLEO offers two six-week summer institutes for college graduates, the SSI cannot extend an offer to students who have completed more than 72 credit hours.

Haitian Nationals Immigration Benefit

Any person of Haitian nationality who is illegally present in the U.S. can apply for protection from deportation and also obtain a work permit. Only those Haitians in the US as of January 12, 2010 can apply for this new immigration benefit and can work legally in this country at least for the next 18 months. At the expiration of 18 months, the US State Secretary will review country conditions in Haiti and possibly extend this immigration benefit for another year. A similar benefit was provided to nationals of El Salvador following a 2001 earthquake. Each year TPS has been extended to nationals of El Salvador so this immigration benefit for Haitians could possibly continue upon the expiration of 18 months.

Columbia University Summer Research Program

I am writing with regard to the Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences' Summer Research Program (GSAS-SRP) for underrepresented students. Each summer, the program offers promising undergraduates an opportunity to conduct graduate-level research for eight to ten weeks with Columbia and Barnard faculty. I am soliciting your help in attracting qualified McNair applicants for our 2010 summer program. As you may know, the Leadership Alliance is a consortium of schools dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented students earning the Ph.D. Columbia is a participating institution in the Alliance, and thus we request that students who are interested in the Columbia program fill out a Leadership Alliance application (due February 1) as well as Columbia's internal application (due February 19). We will review all applications, but will give preference to those applicants who complete both forms. By filling out the Alliance application, students will have the opportunity to increase their chances of acceptance into other participating Leadership Alliance (LA) institutions that offer summer programs. Students can learn more about the Alliance summer program and complete an online application at the LA website (www.theleadershipalliance.org).

This year the Columbia GSAS-SRP is offering research opportunities in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. We ask students to make sure their interests and preparation match one of the disciplines that Columbia GSAS offers before submitting an application. These disciplines are listed on the enclosed Columbia application. Refugee Nation is about a young generation struggling to understand their history and the silence of an elder generation still healing from the traumas of the U.S. waged Secret War in Laos during the Vietnam War era.

More than just a telling of Laotian American history, the two-person performance eloquently touches upon crucial issues relating to the refugee experience, assimilation, generation gap, and mental health by interweaving drama, film, music, and audience interaction. The result is a product that not only brings to light the hidden stories of Laotian Americans around the U.S., but one that is able to unite people from all types of backgrounds, ethnicities, and histories by relaying the ideas of change, loss, struggle, healing, and the unrelenting strength of the human spirit.

As we welcome a new decade, the Refugee Nation continues to grow. With the certainty of new refugee arrivals coming from the Middle East, what can we learn from the wounds of a war 30 years ago that are still yet to be healed?

In 2009, 63 women from all across the country received over $250,000 in educational scholarships. Scholarships range from $500 to $5000 and will be made available for Fall 2010. Over 300 women have already received educational financial assistance.

The scholarship is open to women 40+ whose income is within 150% of poverty. Priority is given to women who are raising the children of another family member, those in dead end jobs and those who have been out of the paid workforce for five or more years. The AARP Foundation does not offer scholarships for graduate degrees. It seeks primarily to assist women who are in the final stages of their college or trade program. Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund
The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has applications available for student activists who are building the progressive movement and will be enrolled in school during the 2010-11 academic year. Our website provides answers to questions about the Fund, the application process, and the students we support. If you know of students working for peace and justice, or if you have a list of activist contacts, please send this announcement along and refer potential applicants to the Fund's website: www.davisputter.org.

Since 1961 the Davis-Putter Fund has provided need-based grants to students who are involved in building movements for social and economic justice and are able to do academic work at the college level. Grantees are both graduates and undergraduates enrolled in accredited schools for the period covered by their grant. Although citizenship is not a consideration, applicants must be participating in activities in the US and plan to enroll in an accredited program in
the US in order to qualify.

The maximum grant is $10,000 and may be considerably smaller depending on the applicant's circumstances and the funding available. All the funds come from individual donors and there are 25-30 grants awarded each year. Grants are for one year although students may re-apply for subsequent years.

Applications and the supporting documents -- transcripts, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, a photograph, financial aid reports -- must be postmarked by April 1, 2010. Those selected to receive a grant will be notified in July.

counseling, facilitating discussions, and making workshop presentations. The OCs are assigned groups for each session, and are responsible for introducing new students to all the services and academic opportunities available at UCLA.

AIDS Health Project began its Post-Baccalaureate Internship Program

The AIDS Health Project began its Post-Baccalaureate Internship Program in 1991 with short-term internships for college students. Today, as a one-year program, it has become an integral part of the agency's structure and is designed to target college graduates who have an interest in the health professions, social services, or non-profit management.

This one-year program helps AHP not only to better manage the volume of high quality services we offer, but also to groom future mental health, social service, and public health providers with expertise in HIV care. It provides interns the opportunity to give back to the community while learning valuable skills and fostering professional growth. Past interns have gone on to enjoy successful careers in medicine, psychology, public health, social work, and public interest law.

Applications are due March 1, 2010 (early application is encouraged).

These are the facts about AHP, but they don't begin to describe the experience in store for interns. We promise you will be challenged and enriched. Solving Urbanization Challenges by Design

Announcing a BRAND NEW NSF IGERT Program at Columbia University! The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservations have collaborated in the design and implementation of a new Ph.D. program : Solving Urbanization Challenges by Design.

The goal of this NSF funded IGERT is to integrate architectural and engineering PhD education in a new interdisciplinary program that aims to fundamentally transform design and planning approaches to contemporary urban expansion. Each IGERT Trainee will be empowered to conduct research at the emergent boundaries between architecture, urban planning, and engineering and will be uniquely capable of contributing to the advancement of technological and scientific solutions that can address the grand challenges of urbanization.

We are actively recruiting for the inaugural Fall 2010 semester. We've enclosed program information in hopes that you would disseminate to faculty, administration, and any all interested student candidates. All accepted program participants, IGERT trainees, receive full tuition and fees, and a stipend of $30,000 for a minimum period of two years.

Sidley Prelaw Scholars Initiative Scholarship

In furtherance of our shared commitment to diversity in the legal profession, I am pleased to announce the rollout of Sidley Austin LLP's ("Sidley") 2010 Sidley Prelaw Scholars Initiative, a unique program designed to widen the pipeline of racially diverse and LGBT students attending law school. In 2006, we inaugurated the Sidley Prelaw Scholars Initiative, selecting students from a group of undergraduate institutions, including public and private universities and certain historically Black colleges and universities throughout the country. Members of that inaugural class are now preparing to graduate and enter into the legal profession.

As you may know, Sidley Prelaw Scholars are college juniors and seniors who demonstrate academic promise but who have limited financial resources that might prevent them from enrolling in an LSAT preparatory course. Each Sidley Prelaw Scholar receives an initial award worth up to $2,500 to cover tuition for a commercial LSAT preparatory course, registration for the LSAT and the Law School Data Assembly Service ("LSDAS"), and reimbursement for up to seven application fees to accredited law schools. Upon documented timely completion of both the LSAT preparatory course and the required number of law school applications, each Sidley Prelaw Scholar receives an additional scholarship award in the amount of $2,500. Sidley Prelaw Scholars also receive expert coaching on how to present a compelling law school application. During the summer immediately prior to their law school matriculation, Sidley Prelaw Scholars will participate in a brief seminar on the structure of the American legal system and be introduced to the substance of the required first-year common law courses.

In previous years, we selected Sidley Prelaw Scholars from a targeted number of colleges and universities. However, this year we've decided to open the program up to any eligible candidate from any accredited American four-year undergraduate institution. Our Admit Weekend yield event is one of the highlights of our community every year. Our population on campus has struggled to maintain numbers since Proposition 209 passed in 1996. Out of over 5,000 students entering into UCLA's freshman class annually, only around 200 of us are Black. This is obviously a problem. It is our job as Black Bruins to ensure that every Afrikan student that is accepted into UCLA is presented with a host of positive experiences during Admit Weekend that will persuade them to choose UCLA. With that being said, ASU staff urges you to apply to become an Admit Weekend committee chair (especially first and second year students). Lets help make our community stronger. She and I have spoken about some of you concerns. If you make the decision to step forward with official complaints, Nancy will do her best to ensure a fair evaluation process.

UCLA Student Artist (non-Art majors included)

I am an Ethnomusicology PhD student and my vision for ArtsIN 2010 is to provide a supportive space for student artists to brainstorm and workshop their own projects while developing career plans among a group of their peers. Winter 2010 will focus on "Creating the Vision," loosely using Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way as a curriculum for helping us identify our strengths and goals, facilitating personal development as artists. There will also be class time for exploration of careers in the arts and graduate school options.

In the spring, we will focus on the "Make Work" aspect of ArtsIN, in which we will work together as a cohort to produce a project that can ideally be incorporated into your own classwork. This project will reflect the theme of "Transforming the Academy" or "Creating Positive Change at UCLA." Depending upon what the cohort decides collectively, this creative project could consist of a mural, a play, a short film, recording a CD, or even all of the above (if we're adventurous enough)! Attached is a short application which is due on Friday, December 4 at 6 pm (the week after Thanksgiving, last day of "Dead Week"). You can e-mail it back to me or return a hard copy to Campbell 1202.

ArtsIN is designed for students to use UCLA space, time, and resources to get what you need and want out of your undergraduate experience, and my job is to facilitate that process for you.

The Black Hypertension Project will be hosting our annual W.E.C.A.R.E. health fair Spring quarter! USAC Immediate Support and Relief Task Force Application 2009-2010

What is the Immediate Support and Relief Task Force?

This task force is a part of the larger Affordability Committee in the USAC President's office that works to address students' immediate affordability needs on campus. The group is responsible for assessing the immediate needs of students and working with students, UCLA administration officials, and public officials in addressing these needs. Members of the Task Force work with other campus entities like the Community Programs Office, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Bruin Lobby Corps, and various student groups in helping to create and promote programs like the meal voucher program, temporary housing network for homeless students, subsidized housing, as well as advocating for long term solutions to any basic affordability needs. This group also complements the efforts of students advocating on issues of student affordability needs in the offices of public officials by surveying students to discern their day-to-day needs and the nature of those needs.

Housing Task Force

Director of Subsidized On-Campus Housing (1)

The Director of Subsidized On-Campus Housing is responsible for helping the task force to raise funds in order to provide subsidized ORL housing for students unable to afford housing within two hours driving distance of campus.

General Task Force Member (several open slots)

As the needs of students change over time, Task Force members will be responsible for assisting the efforts of others on the task force and will also help the group respond to new and emerging affordability needs.
