2013 NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS, SOLUTIONS, INTENTIONS

2012-12-31T09:09:00.000-08:00

I wasn't going to do New Year's Resolutions this year. I read an article on not wording your resolutions as "I will" or I will not" as it seems to feel like you are setting up for failure when you do or don't do what them. Instead writing resolutions as "I am." I decided to give this a try.
As I have been re-obsessed with Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass lately I thought maybe I would write my resolutions as a poem. Cheesy? Yes I am. :)
Also I have been reading The Yoga Sutras, so my first resolution "honesty, truth, cleanness, obedience" is a line from that book.
Here's to a loving & fabulous 2013.

Resolutions, Solutions, Intentions

I am honesty, truth, cleanness, obedience.
I am yoga and meditation (as daily as possible).
I am eating to live (not living to eat, and healthy, greens more conscious of what goes in my body).
I am closing (at least) 30 loans a month (with improved quality with each month that passes).
I am a patient, listening, kind, playful mother (bringing love and joy to my boys life. Living by example).
I am living love (giving love to each and every living being).
I am living without judgement (without anger or resentment, living in the present).
I am improving my heart and my health (with cardio at least 3 times a week).
I am with great joy a dog owner (hopefully in the Spring).
I am consuming less and wasting less (only purchasing what is necessity, cutting back on unnecessary If a "need" pops into my mind I will wait 5 days before deciding to purchase, ridding the impulse purchase).
I am bringing home more than I am spending.
I am traveling to one new place (each year).
I am giving my time (volunteering at least once a month).
I am pursuing my love of photography.
I am (finally and fully) learning Italian.

A STORY

2012-12-30T09:17:00.002-08:00

I read a story about a king and a group of monks.

There were a group of monks that were to be put to death. They were brought before the king. The kind told the monks, "if you can give me something that will make me happy when I am sad and make me sad when I am happy I will spare your lives." The king feeling this was an impossible tasks. He sent the monks away to come back the next day.
The monks stayed up the entire night contemplating what they could bring the king.
The next day the king sent for the monks to be brought to him, and to be prepared to be put to death.
The monks stood before the king. The kind said, "what have you brought me that will make me happy when I am sad and make me sad when I am happy?"
The monks handed the king a piece of paper. The king opened the paper that read:

"This too shall pass."

The monks lives were spared.

A COOL 16 YEAR OLD NEEDS COOL CASH

2012-12-29T20:34:00.001-08:00

I found this idea on Pinterest awhile back and saved it to do for my 16 year old b-day. Teenagers are so hard to buy for and mine prefers cash anyway so he can spend it how he want to spend it. So this is what I did:

JUST (unfinished poem)

JUST

Just let it...,

If it were meant to be it would be.

Trying to force it,

Only frustrates you and frustrates me.

(this is unfinished, but I have nothing else to add to it yet)

IN THIS MOMENT

IN THIS MOMENT

11/17/12

photo by - Far From Perfect

You say that I don't care.

It's not that I don't care. It's just that I have already learned long ago - that nothing is permanent.

Not by choice.

By loss.

Of course I care.

That is why I love what is right in front of me with all my heart. That is why every moment of my life I take in, breath in, see clearly, touch, taste, hear every detail.

My heart breaks open and pours love on exactly that moment and embraces it.

And then does the same with the next moment.

To fully feel each moment in front of me.

Because I know that I only have so long in that moment and then it is gone.

So when you come to me with your regret and I just shrug.

Then you turn on me that I don't care, because you are living in the past or the future.

It's not because I don't care.

It's because you have not yet learned how to live the way I do.

I shrug. -

Because after that moment you've told me I don't care - I am on the next moment - taking it in - and you are on your past or future worries, regrets, and fears.

I hope one day to see you........

in this moment.

2012-11-06T03:52:00.000-08:00

POLITICS WITH A 6 YEAR OLD:

Kyle: Mama who are you going to vote for? We voted today at school.
Me: Oh yea, who did you vote for?
Kyle: Mitt Romney.
Me: Oh yea, I thought you liked Barack Obama.
Kyle: I do like him, but he has been president for 4 years and I thought I would give Mitt Romney a chance. Who are you going to vote for Mama?
Me: Well last time I voted for Obama.
Kyle: Will you vote for

Mitt Romney too, like me?
Me: No baby. I can't.
Kyle: Why not Mama?
Me: Because baby I don't believe in the same things that Mitt Romney does.
Kyle: Barack Obama likes pizza.
Me: Me too.
Kyle: *giggles*

THE END.

MY FRIEND - (A POEM)

2012-10-28T09:35:00.000-07:00

my friend

sometimes i lay in bed at night and our memories come to mind

i can't remember what your voice sounds like anymore

it's been so long since you've gone our memories are like trying to look through a fogged up window

you came to me in a dream once

it wasn't a memory we had ever had together

i prayed to see your face in a dream

i was walking down the stairs and you were walking up

we passed each other and i said you're name

i stared at you and began to cry

i told you i missed you

all you said was you missed me too and i hugged you

i awoke knowing that even though you're not here

you are with me

BECOMING MY MOTHER

2012-10-06T18:01:00.000-07:00

Earlier this week I was standing in front of my bathroom mirror putting make-up on getting ready for work. My teen came in to ask me a question. As I'm standing there facing the mirror seeing him in the mirror looking at me I had a flashback or a memory however you call it. I can remember many times as a teen going into the bathroom as my mother was getting ready for work standing behind her looking at her in the mirror as she looked back at me asking her some random question:

Did you wash my shirt?

Can I have money so we can go buy some new shoes?

Can I go to the game tonight?

The questions are irrelevant. Like any other teen I was the center of my own world and every answer she gave me only related to me. As a teen my mother's answer was either followed by thoughts of "she is trying to ruin my life" or "what am I going to wear" or me, me, me. Thinking I am the center of this woman's world - she has no life besides me - of course all I think about is me and of course all she thinks about is me. Right?

Back to the other morning: now I am standing where my mother once did and my teen stands where I once stood. I think he has no idea the reasons behind my answers to his questions. He has no idea I have stood where he now stands, no idea that I once had a life, currently have a life, the trials I have been through, the joy I have been through, what is currently pulling my mind, and none of it is directly related to him or to intentionally ruin his life. He has no idea the pain & joy, the rich & poor, the laughter & tears.

I think back to my mother. How many times I stood looking at her asking for whatever irrelevant thing I wanted in that moment - and not knowing perhaps she didn't wash my shirt because she worked 10 hours, cooked, cleaned, helped with homework, chatted about my problems, and all the gazillion other things going on - like my father, my other siblings, her own mother, and the shirt just slipped her mind. It wasn't directly related to ruining my life - and honestly had nothing to do with me. She had a life.

Perhaps I couldn't have money to buy new shoes, because she had just paid all the bills, and extra expenses had come up, or maybe she helped a sibling with their rent & quite frankly she was trying to budget to make sure to keep food on the table until the next payday.

As a teenager we don't see beyond ourselves - and have no idea the experiences & emotions & motivation behind the answer our parents give us to our teenager question that is all about us.

Until one day we are standing right where our parents stood before and now we are in their position.

Understanding our parents - think Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, but less dramatic. :)

There is yet another light that lights up - in this circle of life - makes us appreciate our parents, respect our parents, understand our parents, and even want to know more about our parents and their life and their experience.

I love now (now that I listen) hearing my parents go into a story about their life, a time before they had kids, and a time that had nothing to do with any of my siblings or myself, but have created the person that my parents have become.

This person that has been in your life since the day you were born, and sometimes they go into a story and you realize you know so little about them - because as their child your world has been all about you & because they brought you into this world and love you they let you be that way.

Back to my teen looking at me in the mirror: I just smile at him with love & knowing.

"What?" he says.

"Nothing kid. I love you. Your shirt is in the dryer. We will go get you shoes when I get paid, and yes you can go to the game. I'll pick you up at 9:00," I say.

Even through that 'teenager look' I can tell he is satisfied this time & at least for this moment I am not trying to ruin his life.

In this moment becoming (understanding, respecting, appreciating) my mother.

Peace & Love.
