Nominations are now open for the Volunteer Achievement Awards 2012.

Are you proud of someone and want to thank them? Do you know an individual who gives freely of their time to improve their community and help others?

Help us to celebrate the community spirit and enthusiasm shown by volunteers in the Lancaster District.

The Volunteer Achievement Awards are hosted annually by Lancaster District Community and Voluntary Solutions (LDCVS) and it is the only event of its kind held in the district. It is an invaluable opportunity to celebrate the commitment of volunteers in our local community, as well as providing guests and nominees with the opportunity to meet and share their experiences. In recognising the dedication of others, we encourage them to continue their hard work and inspire others to become involved in community projects.

For the second year running, the 2012 ceremony will be held in partnership with Lancaster City Council and individual nominations are invited under the following categories:

Volunteer of the Year: This award is aimed at individuals who volunteer for community based projects
Young Volunteer; as above but 18yrs and under
Trustee of the Year: As above but specific to those who sit on the committee as a Trustee/Board Member/Director
Community Pride Volunteer: This award recognises the contribution of individuals who support people in their local area
Groups of volunteers: This award is aimed at groups of people who volunteer for community based projects.

Survey to Identify Premises Needs for Community and Third Sector Organisations in the Lancaster District

Are your workspace needs being met?

We are conducting a survey into workspace requirements in the Lancaster District and would like to invite all charities, voluntary organisations, faith-based initiatives and social enterprises in the District to take part. Please help us by completing the survey and passing it on to any other organisations that you may feel would like to feed in to the survey.

The survey has two objectives:

To establish current assets and capacities with a view to using these resources better. For example, hot-desks, storage space, equipment, shop fronts etc. One possible outcome would be the formation of a resource database, made available to local voluntary organisations and social enterprises in the area. This could be done quite quickly.
To establish how much demand there is for a new purpose built centre [or major conversion of an existing building] to provide space for community and voluntary organisations in the District. The centre would serve as a ‘creative hub’ designed to allow different organisations to interact and share resources and facilities, on affordable and flexible terms. Completing this questionnaire will help us to establish the interest in such a centre, and ensure that it meets your needs when open. This is a longer-term project that is likely to take 3-5 years.

Note: The information gathered from the survey will be treated as confidential, stored by Lancaster District CVS and covered by our data protection policy. Published results will be anonymised to avoid identification of respondents. Unless you tell us otherwise, we will include you on our email list in order to keep you up to date with progress in developing this project.
About the Survey

The survey has a two part questionnaire. The first part requires information which should be easily to hand and therefore should be fairly quick to fill out. This will provide us with valuable initial information.

The second part asks for more specific and detailed information. We will send you a separate invitation to complete part two once we have analysed the results of part one.

A project steering group has been set up to do this research whose members include Lancaster District CVS, the North Lancashire Community Land Trust, and representatives from City and County Councils.

Displays, advice and information over lunch from a range of energy saving projects

The session will be at Halton Community Centre which will provide an opportunity to see the centre's ground heat source, solar hot water and electricity generation in action.

Public Sector Leaders Symposium

Members of Lancaster District CVS are invited to the Public Sector Leaders Symposium to discuss the current situation and anticipated impact in the next few years for public services.

What needs improving? What is important in our District? What can we do together to minimise this impact? What role does the public sector see the voluntary sector playing?

Volunteer Achievement Awards

Lancaster District CVS were delighted to host the 2011 Volunteer Achievement Awards on Tuesday 7th June at the Ashton Hall, Lancaster Town Hall. This was a unique opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication shown by volunteers in the Lancaster District, with nominations from over 60 local voluntary and community groups and over 100 individuals attending on the night.

All nominated volunteers received Certificates of Achievement from the Chris Batten, Director of the Francis C Scott Charitable Trust. There were two winners in the Volunteer of the Year category; Ann Shaw from Thumbprint, an organisation which enables people with learning disabilities to set up and run their own projects and Bob Raby from Signposts, which supports the local community on a wide range of issues including housing and health benefits. The Young Volunteer of the Year, running for its third year, was awarded to Daniel Hunter from Morecambe and District Junior Anglers, which aims to teach coarse angling and raise awareness of conservation and wildlife issues for those aged 8-16.

Hannah Bland, from Lancaster District CVS, said that “Over thirteen thousand volunteers contribute over 700,000 hours of their time every year within the Lancaster District. The panel felt that all three winners were worthy ambassadors for volunteering and fantastic role models to local people, offering their time to support these organisations and the wider community in a variety of ways.”

Special thanks go to Chris Batten for his valued contribution, and staff at the Ashton Hall. Lancaster District CVS would also like to thank to all of the volunteers who attended, and who made the event such an enjoyable success. Nominations are now open for the Volunteer Achievement Awards 2011.

The Volunteer Achievement Awards are hosted annually by LDCVS and it is the only event of its kind held in the District. It is an invaluable opportunity for local groups to celebrate the commitment and dedication of their volunteers and promote voluntary work in the community, as well as providing guests and nominees with the opportunity to meet and share their experiences. Last year’s event was attended by more than 150 guests from a diverse range of local community and voluntary groups and each nominee received a certificate marking their individual commitment.

This year’s event is supported by the Lancaster District Local Strategic Partnership (www.ldlsp.org.uk).

Nominations are being sought for volunteers under two categories; Volunteer of the Year and Young Volunteer of the Year (18 and under) as well as nominating groups of volunteers.

LDCVS would like to encourage you to nominate as many volunteers as you wish, in recognition of their commitment to your organisation and volunteering within the Lancaster District.
