My comment and thanks to Umair.

Umair,

I have referenced, posted and blogged about you and your work a fare bit since reading `betterness` roughly 2 months ago. I wake in the morning with your concepts at heart, i fall asleep thinking of making a difference. 24 months ago i started a nfp to promote science and space to kids using comics, missions and rewards (www.staracers.com). It grew out of frustration with being a high status, zero-substance content creator for kids. Once I tried to add green roofs to a cartoon about cars. It was as if i suggested including terrorists...

Some people around me are unimpressed, and downright disappointed because they don`t see the `money`. But we`re already gaining traction with next to nothing to offer but a few comics and a big idea... the CSA, ISU and other large agencies are taking note and starting to help us out. It`s amazing. Giving and empowering with nothing more than a concept has had more impact than any god awful TV fluff or shiny widget I ever made...

My psyche has been dogged, nagged about the nature of passion, human potential and community for a decade, but you`ve put clear voice and powerful logic to my feelings. Thank you so much. You are the first to break the four minute mile...

Awesome image from Mondolithic Studios

Below is the entirety of my rambling response to the excellent HBR post written by Andrew Mcafee. Thanks Andrew!

The Robots Are Coming for Your Job

If I ramblingly extrapolate on the point made in the HBR article The Robots are Coming for Your Job - that robot manufacturing will increase gdp and be best for a nation.

Then we might also think that increase in national wealth will "trickle down" (grain of salt here) into things like reeducation, free education, increased resources (time, energy), also less resources required for manufacturing. Like less power required to heat / cool factory, less lighting required, robots work all the time, they can work in denser spaces, so smaller factories, and there is no down time except for inspection and repair. And the factory could be modular. So it's doesn't just build cars, it also can build anything less complex than a car- dishwashers, furnaces, washer, dryer. Robots don't really need to learn new skills. They simply execute their program. So things are assembled faster and with less error.

Manufacturing is going in a pretty interesting direction. Additive manufacturing. 3d printing. Automated manufacturing. we will only need manufacture things on demand. So the model of creating goods for an anticipated market is actually no longer required. Stock piles of goods won't really be necessary. A car building factory will take orders from people remotely. You order your car based on a 'live' model. Then your car is built by automated factory and delivered. Heck it could drive itself to your house autonomously (thanks, google x prize urban challenge).

Additive manufacturing

It has me rambling over to thinking of my dishwasher. I fill through out the day and then it cleans my dishes. It saves me and my family 45 minutes a day? What does that added time give us? time together, sure. Time to converse, yes. Time to contemplate. Time to do whatever we want. The explosion of entrepreneurial spirit I think stems from this added time. I could not have started my own business before I owned a computer, because my job (animation) took a very long time to do by hand. Now it takes vastly less time. A magnitude less. from 1000 hours to make a minute of animation down to 100 hours or less. This hasn't been a detriment, it's been great for the business of animation. Greater diversity of content, animation has been applied to other sectors from gaming to, almost every commercial you can think of, to corporate training videos and that's the tip of the iceberg.

How will this added time increase the quality of life for the labour force? Not sure. Aggressive DIY could enter. Human hand made, high quality goods could enter. A resurgence of hand crafted, high quality goods? That would be cool... I have to now ramble over to thinking about the folding proteins video game. That many human hands tackling a big task that a computer cannot yet do is yielding results.

I guess it will take the right incentive, platform, initiative to harness the free time of the labour force. Like the protein folding game, like wikipedia. I know these are not examples of physical labour, but physical labour will one day soon be looked upon the same way we think of physically farming the land, or hunting our food. Physical labour will become an optional past time.

I know that a large percentage of the world still does farm by hand and still does gather their food. But i have to drop Peter Diamandis here and his book "Abundance" saying the world is improving, quality of life is getting universally better, the book "the angels of our better nature" violence has been declining for centuries and despite our assumptions empathy is increasing, and Umair Haque's excellent essay "Betterness" that there is so much more wealth to measure than just gdp.

What will you do with your free time?

To expand on Umair Haques vision of total economic and business paradigm shift... Once we acknowledge these other forms of wealth - intellect, health, social, creative, to name a few. How wealthy we will be? That GDP is the sole determinant of wealth is archaic. The gold in the kings coffer was not always reflected in his subjects quality of life. The same holds true today.

But if we turn around and think to ourselves - clean running water, access to the internet, TV, temperature controlled shelter. How poor are we really? The modern world is freaking out because we aren't excelling in the same direction as we have for the past 60 years (which gives very liitle back in return actually) and we think something is wrong. And yes something is wrong. The methods of our prosperity have been to the detriment of our neighbours and the fabric of our very world.

Sustainable?

A new language is emerging, a new set of symbols, a new lexicon. And your thinking "language is not change. Language is just talk. hot air." And I say to you, language and lexicon shape culture, lay down concepts previously unimagined, and when the symbols resonate with a passionate few they can spread aggressively through a network. New symbols are more than hot air. New symbols rest on the mashed up pillars of previous definitions. New symbols can be very very powerful. They can incite genocide. eliminate slavery, strip away apartheid, or usher in an era of prosperity, the scientific method for example.

Today paradigm shifts are happening at an ever increasing pace, we are on the threshold of not understanding our rate of change. That's the point I started with really. What will robotics mean to human culture? We can project in many different directions. Most visions of the future are fearful. An analogy that just jumped into my head is that of the old testament and the new testament.

The God of Moses was hardcore. So is the Terminator.

The God of Moses and Abraham was a brutal, short tempered god who would thrash you down to hell if you crossed him. The God of Jesus forgave all sinners and relaxed about it all and recognized that if you lighten up people will eventually do unto their neighbors. This was a huge philosophical and societal paradigm shift. From one of brutal consequences to one of understanding and openness. I mean okay it was still a brutal world, but a lighter philosophy was in place so that action and the world we know today could follow. Perhaps this is the cross roads we are about to enter with technology. A lot of concern, fire and brimstone followed by grace and understanding.

Hah, of course this grace will likely stem from a mind - computer interface (currently lot's of research in this area and also an x prize i think). So that the human mind can again comprehend it's place in the universe. Balance via embracing our utmost fear.

Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler's new book "Abundance" is a factual account about how the world is actually getting better and not worse. These guys want to change the conversation about the immediate future from one that is bad to one that is better. I'm ready to believe it but what do most people believe?

Let's start with a few questions

Who thinks gaming is a waste of time?
Who thinks artificial intelligence is evil?
Who thinks Africa is never going to get better?

Almost everybody. Almost everybody feels this way. Why? Well, according to Abundance, the human brain is hard wired to gravitate towards the negative.

Which leads me to contemplate...

Common Sense
When people say "Why doesn't X just use common sense!?" What is common sense? It's the mean average of assumptions and beliefs across a culture right? Common sense 300 years ago was that worms grew into snakes, that witches cursed crops, that God almighty selected the ruling class.

Common sense today is what?
That robotics and AI will enslave humanity, that China is crushing the world under its progress, that the world is crumbling under population explosion, that food is nearly unattainable because of rising fuel costs, that nuclear power will radiate and mutate the entire world, that GMO's are subversive corporate tools, that corporations are sociopathic organizations, that video games are rotting the minds and empathy of youth and undermining all of morality. For starters...

If I just stopped there and posted this I'd get a bunch of head nods and righteous support and that'd be fine I guess. But if I did that then I wouldn't really be contributing much to the conversation.

I am of the common sense, we are all the common sense. I am a fraction of a fraction of the common sense. If you think your outside of common sense then your actually on a different planet. If you want to change common sense then you have to take part in the conversation, breakdown belief into it's assumptions and with compassion introduce an alternative based on fact and truth. Like Abundance does.

Common sense is shifting beneath our feet and it's freaking us out.

This Big Shift is unsettling. Ours is the first generation to do worse, have less than our parents, struggle more, deal with less stability in the work place, have more debt, and zero retirement options. Right?

Let's for a moment consider our children's future...

Children's Future
Our children will have ubiquitous access to not just the internet, but also education, and not just regular ol' "I have to read all this and then get tested on it" education. Oh no. Our kids will be educated without knowing it - with games, interactive programs and augmented reality interface.

From the futurist John Smart it could look like this...

Kids learn Physics? -
A kid plays baseball. Kid is curious about how the ball flies through the air. Kid's wearable computer shows him the speed of the ball and all the physics and math behind the balls trajectory in a totally awesome and fun manner. The kid just learned all about physics, causality, thermodynamics and math without skipping a beat.

Kid's contribute to solving Inequity? -
Apply this to inequity. A kid witnesses a homeless man on the street or a starving child on tv. Kid asks his computer why. Computer shows the reasons for this inequity. Kid wants to help. Computer enables him to take immediate action to contribute.

Kid's develop Empathy? -
Apply this to bullying. The kid is witnessing a bully or is being bullied. He asks why. His wearable computer shares with him all the variables of empathy and apathy. Within a framework that's appropriate for the kid. The kid's own empathy expands as he understands why the bullying is taking place and is armed with passive defence options.

Yeah right, you mean until the robots come, enslave us, and drive us underground like rats.

Ok, let's try to channel that very real pessimism with immediate fact.

What's Right Now?
Right now, very real is the Khan Academy. MIT for free and MOOCs. Free education. Free, engaging, interesting education. Free, engaging, interesting, accessible to 80% of the world in the next 4 years education. Oh and health care too. That's right, the best medical feedback in the world for free... What will free medical advice do for the world?

Probably save a few lives I guess. Likely the lives of intelligent people, of driven people. If those intelligent, driven people aren't having to worry about getting water for their families or village, fight against instability, starvation and debilitating disease, what do you think they will contribute to their communities? Now times that by 3 billion. 3 billion additional problem solvers to the world. To the internet. And when I say the world's problems I mean clean water, basic nutrition, basic health care, basic sanitation, basic shelter, basic literacy and reducing inequity.

Do you think that these billions of contributors can solve those problems? Maybe you don't think so because we haven't been able to solve it ourselves so why should this rising billion.

Well, I think Abundance might be able to answer some of these questions.

http://www.abundancethebook.com/

This is one of many brilliant videos by Vi Hart: doodler extraordinare and math enthusiast. Vi Hart explores concepts, bridges gaps, asks questions. She doesn't even hint at an answer. She explores and then explores some more. down and down or up and up. and/or both!

My definition of artist - a person who goes from concept to creation.

My definition is pretty broad... too broad.

The above definition would include a baker, an engineer, a cab driver? So I think I'll have to refine it. Of course I would love to construct one together. I would love to hear your opinion in the comments below...

Francis Ford Coppola has been directing films for a long time. He's has made masterpieces like The Godfather, and Apocalypse Now. This interview with him is inspiring and humbling. Here's an excerpt and then the link to the full article. I came across this article on the animation mistro- Nick Cross's blog Thanks Nick and thanks Francis... I contemplate in your honour.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve given to your children, inside and outside of the industry?
Always make your work be personal.

And, you never have to lie. If you lie, you will only trip yourself up. You will always get caught in a lie. It is very important for an artist not to lie, and most important is not to lie to yourself. There are some questions that are inappropriate to ask, and rather than lie, I will not answer them because it’s not a question I accept. So many times we are asked things in our work or in life that you want to lie, and all you have to do is say, “No, that is an improper question.”

So when you get into a habit of not lying when you are writing, directing, or making a film, that will carry your personal conviction into your work. And, in a society where you say you are very free but you’re not entirely free, you have to try. There is something we know that’s connected with beauty and truth. There is something ancient. We know that art is about beauty, and therefore it has to be about truth.

You now have all the resources to do your own production, writing, directing. What’s the biggest barrier to being an artist?
Self-confidence always. The artist always battles his own/her own feeling of inadequacy.

Let's start with a cool video about "ideas" shall we?

These attached videos provide some small clarification of what I've been doing, sort of by default, for the last 24 to 36 months... Trying to make sense of what and where I am, well, where we all are.

I've been almost frantically reading, searching, analyzing, contemplating, and wondering about the state of the world and the state of humanity ever since I discovered I could actually find out by searching the internet-super-highdom, blog-o-sphereical-mega-swarm, web-pile-mountain-range-video-interface, cloud-information-computational-universe-forum, and TED-tube-landia.

I used to write a lot of music and lyrics (eventually pretty good stuff). I used my copy of Websters dictionary to seek out new words with the perfect intonation and meaning to fit the structure of the verse, the tone of the tune, the story and thesis of the concept behind the song. The more I did that, the easier it became and the better I got at it.

Connecting concepts and finding bridges between ideas in a song became second nature, sort of... It was still hard work but it was rewarding. Now I think I finally realized I've been doing that in a similar fashion using the internet and it's information basin... I still go to dictionary.com like 40 times a day to check spelling or ensure proper usage but what I mean is I've been trying to connect dot's and explore buried hunches.

Ten years ago I did not understand "surfing the net". I didn't find my interests reflected. But in the last few years I got into futurism, emerging technology, astronomy, and space exploration. Basically the potential of the human race. These searches, much like my wanderings through Websters, fed my intrinsic desire to understand. Who are we? What can I expect for my family? What does our intelligence really mean? What does it really afford us? Are we screwed? Are we in an inevitable nose dive? Will population growth kill us all? Will peak oil destroy everything? Where the hell are the renewable power sources we've been promised?! Where's my bloody flying car?! Free energy?! DNA code, stem cell, cloning, artificial intelligence what's that?! I wanted to get a handle on the present and the future.

What I'm getting at is: so what has this scrappy body of self vetted knowledge afforded me? Some insight. Vague understanding. A little clarity. Small piece of mind. A direction. This post emerges for a reason. I found some video posts. They are below. I'll let them speak for themselves. They are a name to what I've been doing and will likely continue to do for the rest of my intellectual life.

As well, some great words I've gathered that (sort of) describe what I've been doing. I thought these words were excuses I'd gathered to justify my behavior and what I was doing with my spare time. Now these words and excuses are finding a foothold in learning circles bigger than my own. I think they are intuitive to certain types of learners... - autodidact, autonomy, self-actualization, synchronicity, synergism

It's called a MOOC! Massive Open Online Course

Artist? Sci-artist?

Golan Levin an engineer and artist. I'm calling this hybrid: sci-artist

Recently, I've been exploring what the definition of artist is. I made my own definition after not finding one that truly explained what artist means to me. I'm an artist, but I don't fit into the definition found online... I stay very apprised of emerging technology. I read extensively on the state of business and education. I make animation and I draw comics. You're undoubtedly making assumptions about who I am based on that last sentence and that's totally normal. Even I make assumptions when I read that sentence. "Oh, this guy thinks he's smart but really he draws super heroes and makes kiddy cartoons... big deal."

My passion for the last couple years has been to introduce kids to science in a meaningful and exciting way. To make science an intrinsic experience. The benefits of science to the kid, her community, nation, and the human race are all pretty big. But the problem is that science has a stigma. It's hard, it's boring, it's difficult to understand and it's for uncool nerds. Socially we're better off denying that we might like or engage in science. In fact it's socially acceptable to call yourself anti-science even though we are emerged in it, like fish in water.

The 2011 ArtsSmarts Knowledge Exchange, that I was blessed to be a part of, really helped me understand the role of art as more than an appreciation of aesthetics. Art increases and fosters cognitive development, problem solving, analytical skills, spacial understanding to name but a few... But this all sounds like science...what's going on?

I and many other artists around the world have decided that the divide between art and other disciplines is crumbling. In fact the divide is false. There is no divide between art, social responsibility and science. They're all rigorously intertwined. Today you won't pursue one without pursuing the others and the sooner that you acknowledge that then the sooner you may leverage it...

Skylar Tibits... An artist exploring the depths and breadth of emerging technology and creating future materials... that build themselves! An artist deeply caring about literally building the future.

But wait! I thought an artist painted flowers and drew naked people, maybe sculpted an abstract phallus once in a while! Or at the most contemporary, constructed giant weird babies!

Not anymore. Not exclusively.

The origins of scientist -
"...that by analogy with artist, they might form (the word) scientist..." Huh, so scientist stems from artist. (read the back story here.)

My definition of artist -
A person who goes from concept to creation.

The scientist goes from hypothesis to fact. The artist goes from concept to creation... Yes there is a huge difference there but the point is, the journey is the same. Discovery through analysis, analysis to thesis. The more imaginative and faceted your analysis the more fruitful your discovery and thesis.

"Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere." - Albert Einstein

In conclusion, when you look at the world through a single port (art exclusively, science exclusively) you short change your experience, your potential and your ability to contribute and create. Science is nothing to be afraid of, you are already a scientist, you were raised as a scientist. If you have ever wondered about anything at all (How is bread made? Why is the sky blue? What is a rainbow? Who am I?) then you have engaged in the scientific method. We already intuitively know how partake in science, how to engage in art. We were born inquisitive, we are hard wired to explore and to wonder. I loved creative writing because there was no limit to what I could imagine. These days I still imagine, the difference is that I search for supporting fact. The outer reaches of science and technology are now visible to the imagination, allow yourself the chance to take part in it, to create it.

____________________________________________________________

Our project to get kids into science is StarAcers - the coolest space comic for kids. Currently our small contribution to this big task which we hope to grow along with technology into the near future.
They reached their target funding amount in record time and have a remaining 5.5 weeks of funding left. StarAcers, the space comic-website for kids, is a project I've been working on with Dr. Geoff Steeves, my almost astronaut pal and partner. He's a university professor, a physicist, a pilot, a scuba diver, a climber, a committed member of the international space community and a really, really nice guy.

We are going into schools with this project this coming sept 2011.

It's bizarre that I haven't posted this on my leobel/art blog but now i am and will.

The link to this specific "StarAcers" blog is - AstroNotes

Check it out if you'd like to know more about this wonderfully fulfilling space project.

WoW riffs

I'm so glad it has a home on the interweb now. We can only hope it will turn into a series. Regardless, I learned a lot while making it. Never, ever underestimate the power of your storyboards and animatic. Never, ever give into feeling sorry for yourself or the project. Never, ever give up hope that it will rock as much you envision it can.

For the time we had to create it, I'm very proud of the final result.
Here are 3 covers to a series i created called "Hym". It should've been spelt "Hymn" or something a little clearer. Friends have asked me, "is it pronounced like HIM or like High-im?" bit of confusion there. I always felt it should be pronounced HIM.

The series was created straight ahead. One day in 1996 i decided to write and draw a comic at the same time. It literally started off as a stream of consciousness for like 40 pages. I broke it up into 10 page blocks. I did the covers much later, you can see from the dates i did about one a year. I simply wanted to create a comic without all the thinking and planning stuff, haha.

Regardless of where it stalled (around the 5th issue and 45 pages) I had planned to do 10 to 12 comics. I look forward to the day when i can work on it again. Perhaps that day is today.

It's so much fun to create comics.
