Yesterday afternoon, while waiting to pick up our daughter from Lipscomb, I participated in a conference call with Congressman Marsha Blackburn. I sat in my truck, with the windows open, listening to the chatter and laughter of students milling about and watching the colorful foliage swirl about....very relaxing.

This serene atmosphere was in stark contrast to the maelstrom building in Washington after Tuesday's election results and the build-up to this weekend's possible healthcare House vote.

John Scott, Ben Cunningham, Ken Marrero, and yours truly took part in this Q & A chat that went for about 30 minutes (ending just before Chatty C bounced into the truck).

Congressman Blackburn (remember she prefers this title) highlighted the Health Care Bill's growing waistline and its creation of a mammoth government structure.

She stressed the importance of calling all of our Congressional representation to shore up the opposition and sway the fence sitters of this proposed legislation.

All said, an encouraging chat with a member of Congress that can talk articulately with pundits of the national media in Washington and comfortably and candid with the folk that live in her district in Tennessee.

Nancy Pelosi’s current plan is for debate to begin Friday on the $2.4 trillion House health care plan, and for the bill to be voted on Saturday.

In a conference call with Tennessee bloggers today, Rep. Marsha Blackburn stated that she is concerned with the effect that unfunded mandates currently contained in the House healthcare bill will have on the Tennessee state budget, hospitals in Tennessee, and delivery of health care in our communities. As a result, she says she plans to offer an amendment to the bill this weekend on behalf of every Tennessee taxpayer that would ban all unfunded mandates in the bill.

While the Democratic leadership may allow amendments to be offered, they probably will not accept any except the GOP alternative bill.

Congressman Blackburn reiterated her concerns regarding the cost of the bill, with the latest estimates running at as much as $2.4 trillion dollars when fully implemented over ten years. She says that will raise taxes, and will increase the burden on Tennessee as Medicaid eligibility increases. There are also additional costs – likely around another $245 billion – that will run as a separate piece of legislation since the decision has been made not to include the SGR fix in the bill.

Maine voters reject gay-marriage law in another Blue State!

Yet another example of how gay right proponents lose the political fight when their agenda is put before the people. Even if a gay marriage bill passes in a state, that is fair, if and only if, it has been decided upon by the people in an open and contested election.

Maine voters reject gay-marriage law...
With 87 percent of precincts reporting, gay-marriage foes had 53 percent of the vote in a referendum that asked Maine voters whether they wanted to repeal a law allowing same-sex marriage that had passed the Legislature and was signed by Democratic Gov. John Baldacci.

"The institution of marriage has been preserved in Maine and across the nation," said Frank Schubert, the chief organizer for Stand for Marriage Maine, which lobbied for the repeal.

For the gay rights movement, which has gained a foothold in New England, it was a stinging defeat. Gay marriage has now lost in every state — 31 in all — in which it has been put to a popular vote. Gay-rights activists had hoped to buck that trend in Maine, framing same-sex marriage as a matter of equality for all families in a campaign that used 8,000 volunteers to get out the message.

Gay-Marriage Foes Take Small Lead
The contest had been viewed by both sides as certain to have national repercussions. Gay-marriage foes desperately wanted to keep their winning streak alive, while gay-rights activists sought to blunt the argument that gay marriage was being foisted on the country by courts and lawmakers over the will of the people.

Had Maine's law been upheld, the result would probably have energized efforts to get another vote on gay marriage in California, and given a boost to gay-marriage bills in New York and New Jersey.

The Congressional health care plan’s so-called “opt-out provision” isn’t taking Governor Phil Bredesen’s focus off of proposed changes to Medicaid.

Bredesen says he’s most concerned with the financial impact on states. Over a ten-year period, he estimates that any of the various bills would drive up the cost of Tennessee’s Medicaid waver program, TennCare, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. He says that’s more pressing than whether states can choose to allow a public insurance option within their borders.

“That doesn’t make any difference to me…Whatever its impact is financially, it’s miniscule compared to the enormous impact that Medicaid would incur.”

Bredesen says added Medicaid costs would be especially hard to bear because they would kick in just when he expects state revenues to recover from the economic downturn. At that time, he says money will need to be spent in other areas, such as starting building projects that have been on hold and upping the pay of state employees whose salaries are currently frozen.

Finances aside, the Governor is not a fan of the provision to let states to choose whether or not a public option is available. He says, “a national plan ought to be a national plan.”

Rex was recently thumbing through his copy of the Hollywood Reporter and stumbled upon the news that Harold Ford Jr. was up for the job as head of the Motion Picture Association of America.

For the last five years, former Kansas congressman and agriculture secretary Dan Glickman has held the post, and for nearly 40 years before that, Jack Valenti was the organization’s chairman. Needless to say, it is one of more plum lobbying gigs in the land.

Ford, who was attacked during his U.S. Senate campaign for having Hollywood connections, is said to be lobbying the movie studio chiefs who control who winds up in the job. Rex asked one Ford insider about the former congressman/current media darling’s chances, and he said, "He told me he wasn't interested, which to me meant he really wants it."

The chiefs at Walt Disney, Columbia Pictures, Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios and Warner Brothers control what happens in the next scene.

Other possible contenders for the gig include California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Universal Music lobbyist Matt Gerson, Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), Disney’s Richard Bates, MPAA COO Bob Pisano and MPAA federal affairs chief Michael O'Leary.

There is no word about whether Ford will try to sway the vote with a reception at the Playboy Mansion.

Lipscomb has earned the program’s 20th overall berth in the playoffs playing in the post-season race to the championship for the 17th consecutive season. The TSSAA announced the 2009 playoff brackets for all six Division I classifications as well Division II Saturday morning with a live broadcast across the state through the Tennessee High School Sports Network. The Mustangs will enter the post-season as the #4 seed in the Middle/West Quadrant and are set to host Jackson South Side on Friday night. The Hawks are the #5 seed in the Middle/West quad. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. at the Reese Smith Athletic Complex.

Lipscomb finished the regular season with a 7-3 overall record and 5-1 in District 10-AA. The Mustangs first round opponent hails from District 14-AA and enters the playoffs with a 7-3 overall record and completed the 2009 campaign 5-2 in the district ending up in a 3-way tie for 2nd.

Here is a full look at the 2009 Class 4A Playoff Bracket. The format is set for the first three rounds to take place within each of the quads to determine a final four. Within each quad, it will be #8 at #1 and #5 at #4 in the upper half with the lower half consisting of #6 at #3 and #7 at #2. (Please note: There are a few exceptions to this, as the TSSAA made sure no teams within the same district played each other during the first round of the playoffs.) The East and Middle/East Quad winners will meet in one semifinal with the survivors from the Middle/West and West Quads meeting in the other semifinal game. The two semifinal winners will earn a berth in the 2009 BlueCross Bowl in Cookeville on December 5th at 3:30 p.m.

Mustangs Claim Share of District 10-AA Crown

With a defensive stand in the closing minutes of the game for the third straight week, Lipscomb claimed a hard fought 17-13 victory over East Literature to claim at least a share of the District 10-AA title. The Mustangs can win the crown outright with a Whites Creek victory over Maplewood on Friday night.

Lipscomb had to withstand a furious rally by East Literature including a fourth down play with just over a minute remaining from the Mustangs’ 30 yard line. Scott Bledsoe and William Officer scored touchdowns for the Mustangs and Daniel Bruce’s 20 yard field goal with 7:53 left in the game had provided Lipscomb with a cushion. However, the Eagles reached the end zone for the second time on the night with 3:53 to go in the game. John McAlister’s interception on the two-point conversion kept the score 17-13 in favor of the Mustangs. A defensive stop by East Literature with 1:49 on the clock set up the final frantic minute of the game.

Officer led the Mustangs with 142 yards on 31 carries. Bledsoe added 51 yards on 14 attempts. Lipscomb controlled the time of possession finishing the game with a 31:59 to 16:01 advantage. Joel Mason led the tackling efforts for the Mustangs with eight total tackles while John McAlister added seven. Matthew Quinn and William Stevens each added six and John Mark Vanderpool recorded five total tackles. The Mustangs forced three turnovers by the Eagles including an interception and fumble recovery by William Stevens as well as a team-leading fourth INT for Lance Runion on the season.

Lipscomb (7-3, 5-1) will now await the TSSAA Playoff announcement on Saturday morning to see who the Mustangs will play in the first round next Friday.

Glenn McCadams Earns 300th Career Win

Lipscomb head coach Glenn McCadams earned his 300th career win with the Mustangs victory over East Literature. In his 32nd year as a head coach and 41st season overall in high school football, McCadams career record now stands at 300-95. He ranks 3rd in most wins for an active head coach within the TSSAA and stands 6th overall in wins for football coaches in the history of the TSSAA.

Closing out his 28th regular season as head coach of the Lipscomb football program, McCadams has won 269 games at the helm of the Mustangs while losing only 83. The 2009 Mustangs are the 20th team to reach the playoffs under McCadams and the program will be entering the post-season for the 17th consecutive season.

A large gathering of Mustang fans at the Reese Smith Athletic Complex welcomed the playoff-bound Mustangs back to campus following the victory at East Literature and also presented Coach McCadams with a 300-win cake and personal words of congratulations.

Lipscomb enters the Week 10 contest against East Literature with the opportunity to win the District 10-AA championship in the first year of the latest re-alignment by the TSSAA. A Mustang victory gives the program at least a tie for its 7th straight region/district title dating back to 2003. Add a Maplewood loss to that scenario and Lipscomb can claim an outright championship and top tier seeding for the upcoming 2009 Class 4A Playoffs.

Facing East Literature for the first time ever in varsity football, Lipscomb returns to the scene of games played four decades ago. The Mustangs played Tennessee Prepatory School during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s before the school closed and will walk out onto the field this week to face a first year varsity program in East Literature. The Eagles played a combined varsity and junior varsity schedule in 2008 in the first year of the football program for the growing school.

Averaging 16.6 points per game while yielding 19.6 to the opposition, East Literature started the season with three straight wins to send a message that the “new kid on the block” was here to stay. Veteran coach Bubba Spears is rekindling the football tradition in the hallowed halls of old Nashville East.

Elsewhere in the district, CPA travels to Pearl-Cohn and Maplewood hosts Whites Creek. All three games have playoff implications in both Class 4A and Class 3A.

Figures tallied by employers and trumpeted by White House could be off by thousands

WASHINGTON — A Colorado company said it created 4,231 jobs with the help of President Barack Obama's economic recovery plan. The real number: fewer than 1,000.

A child-care center in Florida said it saved 129 jobs with the help of stimulus money. Instead, it gave pay raises to its existing employees.

Elsewhere in the U.S., some jobs credited to the stimulus program were counted two, three, four or even more times.

The government has overstated by thousands the number of jobs it has created or saved with federal contracts under the president's $787 billion recovery program, according to an Associated Press review of data released in the program's first progress report.

The discrepancy raises questions about the reliability of a key benchmark the administration uses to gauge the success of the stimulus. The errors could be magnified Friday when a much larger round of reports is released. It is expected to show hundreds of thousands of jobs repairing public housing, building schools, repaving highways and keeping teachers on local payrolls.

The White House seized on an initial report from a government oversight board weeks ago that claimed federal contracts awarded to businesses under the recovery plan already had helped pay for more than 30,000 jobs. The administration said the number was evidence that the stimulus program had exceeded early expectations toward reaching the president's promise of creating or saving 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year.

But the 30,000 figure is overstated by thousands — at the very least by nearly 5,000, or one in six, based on AP's limited review of some of the contracts — because some federal agencies and recipients of the money provided incorrect job counts. The review found some counts were more than 10 times as high as the actual number of jobs; some jobs were credited to stimulus spending when, in fact, none were produced.

Construction employment continued to shrink in Greater Nashville in September, according to data published Tuesday by the Associated General Contractors of America.

The number of construction jobs in the Nashville Metro Statistical Area fell 12 percent (4,700 jobs) to 34,800 in September, while Tennessee saw a decline of 22 percent (28,900 jobs) to 105,400 construction jobs.

Greater Nashville ranked 167 out of 337 metros for construction jobs.

Head Coach Glenn McCadams Going For 300th Win Thursday!

In his 28th season leading the football program at Lipscomb, McCadams joined the Campus School in 1982 after spending four seasons as head coach of the football team at Trenton Peabody. McCadams has won over 76% of his games at Lipscomb compiling a 268-83 record. He holds a career mark of 299-95 in his 32nd season as a head coach.

Under his leadership, the Mustangs have won three state championships - two in Class 2A (1994 and 2002) and one in Class 3A (2007). His Lipscomb teams have played in a total of seven state title games as well as five bowl games. Including the 2008 season, McCadams has taken the program to 16 straight TSSAA Playoffs and 19 overall. In his 27 seasons, the Mustangs have been to the post-season 24 times.

A native of west Tennessee, the Huntingdon High School graduate spent nine years on the coaching staff at Milan High School before joining the head coaching ranks. McCadams also serves the Campus School as assistant principal of the high school. He has also been Athletic Director during his tenure at the Nashville school.

The first group in each class is teams that are first or second in their district or are in the top half of playoff teams in their district. The wild cards are the next available teams based on a tiebreaker system, starting with overall record. These teams would also be in.

Numbers listed are not seedings, just counting the number of teams that would qualify for the playoffs.

This is the last week of the regular season. Final pairings will be announced on Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. (104.5-FM).

At least seven area high school football games have been moved to Thursday because of the forecast of rainy weather on Friday.
