I remember when Daisy chose me. She was about the size of a guinea pig and she was running circles around me in this tiny visiting room. I was 27 and I had just started my first REAL job. I needed a companion and I really wanted a Westie. She stopped for just a second to jump up on my knee. During her brief pause, she also put her tiny teeth around my finger. Not biting me, but just hard enough for me to realize that she picked me. That was it. I returned to pick her up that evening and the rest is history.

Yesterday, my baby of 17 years ran over the Rainbow Bridge where her companions from years before were waiting for her. I always knew it would be hard to lose her. So hard, I knew, that I would deny it for a long time. Yesterday morning, though, I knew it. I pampered her all morning and held her until she took her last breath. I feel lucky that she died at home in my arms as opposed to being at the vet.

Daisy was many things. A diva, a princess, a business partner, a celebrity in her own right. She was my business logo and the recipient of gifts from all over.

She only loved being outside if she was with me.

Daisy was a travelling pooch. She'd visited many places including Atlanta, Folly Beach, Holden Beach, and was rarely left at home. I'm going to miss her, but I am glad that she is no longer suffering the plights of old age.

Have You Heard BeauyCounter Yet?

I just hate it when my life becomes so busy that I put my blog on the back burner. I think it has been, what, two weeks? Ugh! I feel so far behind and just after I was able to get into a good two-post-a-week rhythm. Ah, well, here I am and I've got a great new find for you today.

This past week, I hosted a party for a dear friend who is embarking on a new endeavor with Beautycounter. Have you heard of it yet? The primary goal of Beautycounter is to bring safe products to everyone. The beauty industry is one of the few that isn't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. I had no idea that was the case. I had no idea that companies can use whatever they want in their products. Kind of gross, huh?

In Europe, there are 1300 banned ingredients in beauty products. In the US, there are 11. ELEVEN. The US has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. Um, no wonder cancer is everywhere. Probably being caused by some mutation causing ingredient that we wash our hair with every day.

Beautycounter has already banned 1500 ingredients from their products. They are leading the charge and setting new health and safety standards in the US. It's fabulous stuff for your body and face. Every item I've tried smells and feels great! I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what I want to purchase first.

They've got products for men, women, and children.

Skin creams and shampoos and skin refreshers.

are also items for the younger set who aren't quite ready for wrinkle fighting.

The brand new make-up line is quite wonderful. My favorites are the lip glosses, but especially the peppermint lip balm.

Truly, though, the body sugar scrub is divine. Oh and the hint of citrus. Just wonderful. I encourage you to check it out online. My party is still open and you can check it out here, if you're interested in trying it out. The price point is great, too.

I definitely give Beautycounter my personal seal of approval and will be working to switch over my beauty care line as I finish out current products. Five on Friday

Ah, Friday, my old friend. It's so good to see you again. I have a terrible cold and I am in need of some good rest to get over this crud. I haven't gotten good sleep the last few days and it's certainly tempting to stay home today. I've got too much to do and I am sure that once I get moving, I will begin to feel better.

It's that magical day and time for 5 on Friday.

ONE

I spent Wednesday morning with 22 kindergarten kids at Parkview Elementary. Working through Junior Achievement, I read stories to the kids teaching them responsibility. The stories touched on financial responsibility, your responsibility to your community, and how to be helpful. It was such a great experience. Kids are very funny and they all seemed to have a great time working on our activities that went with each story.

TWO

I voted on Tuesday. It was an important midterm election nationally and locally. I don't think there is an excuse to not vote. It's your right and your civic duty.

THREE

It's been a mild week, but I think it's supposed to cool down again. I am really tired of having to have all seasons of clothing available to wear. Ah, but such is life living in North Carolina. Seems like one of the few places it will be 70 or great one day and snow the next.

FOUR
It's time to start thinking about the holidays. My nephews kept asking where my Halloween decorations were and honestly, I don't have any. I used to have a lot, but having moved twice in the last three years most of them didn't make it. I've started to think about decorating for Christmas. I didn't even put a tree up last year, so I would like to have something this year. I haven't decided what I will do yet, but in the past I was always that person that put her tree up on November 1st.

FIVE
Getting back on track. As soon as I feel better, I will back to the gym on a regular basis. I can tell what a huge difference it makes when I don't go to the gym.

Focus on High Point: Tipsyz Tavern

I'm still stuck on food this week. I can't help it. I am a foodie, after all. Hopefully, this weekend I will be able to get out and explore some of great shops in town. Another one of my favorite spots in High Point is Tipsyz Tavern. It's my favorite hole-in-the-wall burger joint a la High Point institution. It's in the old Majorette building and for old timers here, we remember it as a place to get a cold beer and a good burger.

Tipsyz is slightly more upscale than the run-of-the-mill hole-in-the-wall. They have a fabulous, varied menu that includes something for everyone. I have a couple of favorites--BBQ Chicken Quesadilla, the Gouda Burger with a side of sweet potato fries, and their wings--specifically, the Spicy Teriyaki wings. Mmm. Oh, and the sauteed spinach. A great side with anything. Hamburgers galore, wraps, salads, and sandwiches. I think I could go on and on about the food.

There's always a new item on special, too. I've been hoping they'd put the Steak and Gouda quesadilla back on the menu. Wow...with garlic aoli. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I'm also a huge fan of Smoked Gouda, but this quesadilla was one that really stuck with me.

Just a few nights ago, I enjoyed a Gouda Burger. Check out that sauteed spinach.
And we've always got to have tunes from the jukebox.

It's a great place to catch up with friends for a cold one after work, or grab a bite to eat for lunch, dinner or even late-night.

Tipsyz is also a great place to catch all the games on Saturdays and Sundays during football season.

Live music every weekend and never a cover charge. They pull in great bands that get the crowd moving and shaking. Below, these shots are from a night with Jaxon Jill.

As if the food and fun weren't enough.....how about the homemade, yes, homemade, cakes and pies for dessert? Sometimes you just need cake and these are fabulous.

Be on the lookout for Holly and Chris in the Tipsyz Food Truck, too. Limited menu, but no limit on taste! They are usually at most of the Food Truck Rodeos around the Triad, but if you are having an event call Chris and have them come to you.

What Weekend: Tricks, Treats, and Skeets

Another busy weekend in the books here. It was full of fun, parades, candy, guns, bachelorettes, wine, and costumes. Fun, right? Right! It was a three-day weekend for me, though it surely doesn't feel that way this morning. I'd like a few more three-day weekends. Good thing the holidays are coming up.

Friday morning, I slept late (just a tiny bit). I got up, had a cup coffee and was off on my first Halloween adventure: The HPFS Halloween Parade. My baby niece and her brother were fighting crime as TMNT--Turtles in a Half Shell, while their sister was deck out in a My Little Pony outfit. My oldest nephew dressed up as Abe Lincoln. His costume choices are always great.

The rest of the kids had to wait until that evening for treats and costumes. The other two, dressed as General George Washington and a Bald Eagle (seriously, my sister slays me with her kids' costumes).

I left the kids to trick or treat (and was also guilted by the oldest one for bailing on the trick-or-treating) to meet up with friends for dinner. Cold beer and good burgers were on tap for the evening. More on that in Thursdays post.

Saturday morning, my baby sister and I headed up to Summerfield for Blasting with Boobs with some co-workers at Shane's Sporting Clays. It was cold and rainy, but it was FUN! I think I may have the shooting bug. I don't want to kill anything (aka, go hunting), but I did enjoy the thrill of sporting clays.

And all of the fun we had, raised money for breast cancer through earlier.org.

Fun, food, auctions, shopping, all on one place. It was a great way to spend a dreary morning!

Saturday night, we were headed out to meet up with my future sister-in-law's bachelorette party. They started with vineyard tours at 2, but I just couldn't do everything. My sisters and I met the gals at 6th and Vine in Winston-Salem. We had great food and good times with future family and good friends.

Thank goodness it was the weekend to FALL BACK! I needed that extra hour of sleep after all this fun. I have been fighting a cold for a few days and I needed a day to stay in bed and rest before it turns into something much worse.

Five on Friday: Trick or Treat

Wow this week has flown by, hasn't it? I've taken today off and have already begun the Halloween celebrations. Y'all, the holidays will be here before you know it!

It's that time of the week for Five on Friday! It's almost lunchtime, but I've enjoyed relaxing today and taking my time to get to my post.

ONE

This week was the last week of my job shadowing with Junior Achievement. What a great experience with these young minds. I think I enjoyed it as much as they did!

The gave all the mentors goody bags full of treats and included a note of gratitude. I can't wait to do it again next year.

TWO

Feasts of Caring Girls Night Out

Our Junior League had a night to make pottery bowls o be sold at the Feasts of Caring Fundraiser for Open Door Ministry. Such a great cause and even more fun!

I think my bowl turned out well. I won't be able to see the glaze that's put on it, but I'm sure it will be fabulous.

THREE

Did you check out my post yesterday? Well, after our pottery fun, we headed up to Blue Rock for a quick bite to eat and a beevo (or three). GNO's are always fun and I love hanging out with my JL gals!

FOUR

Last night, the JLHP had our fall membership recruitment social. If you missed it or didn't know about it, but have an interest in the Junior League of High Point, please let me know. It's a great group of women having fun together and making a difference right here in our community.

FIVE

This morning, EARLY, we headed over to HP Friends School for the annual Halloween Parade. These cuties were having a ball, while Aunt Lollie (that's me) was freezing her tootie off! I'm not happy that it's finally gotten cold, but at least it FEELS like Halloween!

Focus on High Point: BlueRock Pizza and Tap

If you live in High Point and you've never tried Blue Rock Pizza and Taps, in the words of the lovable USMC Private, Gomer Pyle, "For shame! For shame!" You have no idea what you're missing. And believe me, you ARE missing it!

BRP, as we fondly refer to it in texts when planning a meet-up, is my favorite local hang-out. The bar is huge, the beer is cold, the staff is friendly, and the food...oh the food. I've never had anything that I didn't like. They have live music (no cover) and you can't walk in there and NOT find at least one person you know. It's what truly makes it a local favorite.

They've got weekly specials, so if you're on a budget, you can find a night that works for you. Tuesdays are my favorite night for a meal for a deal: $2 Lawnmowers and a large for the price of a small pizza. DEAL! In my personal opinion, any night a Blue Rock is a good night.

They have more than just pizza, too. Great wings, great salads, lots of yummy appetizers. Oh, and the nachos....some of the best I've had.

My new favorite pizza is the Tennessee Jed. Mango Jalapeno sauce as the base with chicken and more. It's so, so yummy. I'm still thinking about the last time I had it and planning the next time I can get it. YUM!

My favorite wings are the Asian BBQ with the wasabi sauce. When I crave wings...these are the ones I want!

Blue Rock was our go-to spot for the World Cup this past summer. The place would be packed in the middle of the afternoon to cheer on the US Men's team. It was the perfect spot to cheer on the team with friends. No matter where you stand, you could see the game on one of their many flat screens.

Did I mention the patio? It is one of the few places in town where the patio isn't out front on the main roadway. It's tucked in the corner of the parking lot. A great spot to enjoy a good meal with friends and family. BRP also has a dining room, though I've only eaten in there a few times. I prefer the social atmosphere of the bar, especially the giant friendship bar.

What Weekend?

Wow! This weekend FLEW by! I'd like to have a few more days, please. I have a long weekend next weekend. I've taken Friday off so I can go see my niece and nephew's school parade and do the fun Halloween stuff with them. For the most part, this weekend was low-key.

Friday night, we headed up to Blue Rock for some cold beers and good pizza. The Tennessee Jed is now my absolute favorite pizza. I highly recommend it!

Saturday, I hit up Fit Club then the gym for some Cardio. We quickly followed up our workout with a quick trip to PetsMart and then a yummy lunch at The Dog House. Gigi needed a warm place to sleep, as she's been a regular on the sectional since we moved. I'm fine with it, but sure the leather cannot be warm.

The Dog House is a High Point institution and the best hot dogs and fried Bologna around. Don't forget your Cheerwine with it, too.

Saturday night, we celebrated the union of two good friends. While I won't share with you the intimate details, I will share the Photo Booth fun we had. Nothing says fun like an open bar and a photo booth. We obviously needed one round of practice before we knew what we were doing.

Sunday was low-key. Had a few do-drop-ins by the house to pick up cookbooks. So much fun to catch up with these friends I haven't seen in a while. Then I had someone drop by to give me something.....some fabulous skin care products. Can't wait to try them, because you know I'm going to give a full report on the products. I fully expect to look 25 by Thanksgiving! I'm so optimistic.

This weekend was full of friends and fun, but now I'm so tired. I have a full week on the books, too. I think I'm ready for the holidays so I can relax. At least I have a four-day work week.

This week has been full of fun and friends. I'm exhausted from being on the go so much. No matter, because it was fun!

It's time for Five on Friday!

1. Meeting Mayoral Candidate Marcus Brandon Sunday night. Great guy with great vision for High Point!

2. The Madcap Opening Party.

Fun, food, friends, and fabulous home fashions. Very hard to beat this fun shop located in the heart of High Point. I'll be featuring the shop on the blog soon, so stay tuned!

3. Junior Achievement.

Next week is my last week with these five fabulous kids. I never knew that mentoring kids would be so much fun. I'm grateful my boss asked me to participate this year. It's been a better experience than I ever imagined.

4. These guys and girl.

They've brought fun and smiles and the kick in the pants HP needs to get moving into the 21st century. Oh, and she's my oldest friend---really my sister from another mother. Still together after all these years! So glad Jason Oliver and John enjoy hanging out with us.

5. Meeting Alexander Julian and his wife.

They are both as nice and kind as you would want them to be. Incredibly funny, too. Such a special event that I was lucky enough to be invited to attend.

6. Yes, I actually have 6. I mentioned it was a busy week, right? Well, having the opportunity to meet with Libby Langdon is pretty high up on my list. Libby is originally from High Point and we all grew up playing together. I hadn't seen her in 30 years or more. We had a great meeting and I'm looking forward to working with her.

She'll be on the Today Show this morning, with KL and Hoda, too!

Focus on High Point: Lily and Theo's Posh Pineapple

Good Thursday morning! It's chilly here this morning and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I miss summer. It's been a busy week for me and I can hardly believe it's Thursday!

I've been wanting to start a weekly post to feature fabulous places in High Point. Kind of like I've been wanting to blog more than once or twice a week (we see how well that's going). Lately, I've been spending more time downtown and more time talking about the revitalization we need in the HEART of High Point.

Today, I'm featuring the fabulous Lily and Theo's Posh Pineapple located on Kivett Drive, just off Main Street. This shop is fabulous and something we've needed in High Point for a long time. There is something for everyone. I buy something (needed or not) almost every time I stop by.

The last time I was in, she had added fabulous pottery pieces by Dawn Ashby. Dawn is a local artist from Greensboro. I have been a fan of Dawn's for a long time. I've go several of her ornaments on my Christmas tree and a fabulous platter on display in my living room.

Lots of great home accessories, too. The eggplant candlesticks are DIVINE!

What Weekend?

Happy Monday, y'all. It's hard to believe we've got another weekend in the books and only ONE full one left for October. This weekend went by fast. Thanksgiving will be here before we know it.

We started out with a little dinner party at our house on Friday night. Good food, good friends, and cold beverages are always a bonus.

Saturday, I got up and headed back to Fit Club. Got my work out on and had fun with some great gals. Saturday afternoon, my friend Elizabeth, picked me up to go do some volunteer work with the Junior League of High Point. Saturday's fun was with Out of the Garden. We stuffed bags for back packs for kids. The program helps kids who are on free or reduced lunch who may not get a meal on the weekends. I love feeding people in need and this project was so much fun.

We were having our own little "pretend" competition with the other table. We're certainly think we won. HA!

We packed 500 bags in the two hours we were there. Knowing we've fed that many kids in the course of 2 hours is exciting.

I may or may not be a little OCD. I was making sure we had all the good we needed to pack and making sure it was organized.

Sunday was full of adventure, too. A trip to the grocery store, a trip BACK to the gym. Yes, I finally graced the doors of the gym, too. I am getting my fitness mojo back. Knowing I've put on 9 pounds (and knowing you now know it, too) is just the motivation I need. That, and an encouraging word from my girl, Abby, on Saturday morning.

Sunday night, I dressed up and headed out to the Madcap Cottage Grand Opening and Open House in downtown High Point. Over the last several months, I've become friends with Jason and John and wanted to be there to support them. It was the cream of the crop, too!

We were all greeted by Creative Director, Robert Leleux, of Domino, as well as a gracious as always Jason Oliver Nixon. Domino Magazine was their big sponsor and they loved that the spotlight was on High Point.

The crowd was quite large through the majority of the party with designers, friends, and High Point natives all in attendance.

Don't forget the fabulous music and disco ball, too! I think I lost my train of thought mid-conversation several times due to a song that came on--taking me back to my youth in the 80's. What a great party soundtrack!

The crowd was so large, in fact, that it began to spill out into the driveway. Jason and I laughed about the party in the driveway, but I told him this was quite common in the South. We like to stand around in our driveways and have cocktails.

Even their good friend and fellow designer, Thom Felicia, stopped in for some fun.

And it wouldn't be a High Point party without a little campaigning. Marcus Brandon is the hardest working man running for office in High Point. If you haven't met him, give him a call or check him out on Facebook.

I would love to say I stayed for the end, but the party invite said 5 - 7:30 and at 8:45 it was still abuzz. I had to get on home for dinner and bed. It was a huge success, if I do say so myself. Congratulations to you, Jason Oliver and John. We are so glad you've made High Point your home.

Five on Friday

It's so nice to see you, Friday! I've been waiting for you this week. It's been a whirlwind of a week, but what's new? It's not that I don't make the most of my weeks. I do. I am ready for a day that I can count on to exercise and one to sleep late.

It's a been a great week so far and the weekend is the cherry on top!

A Promise

I made a promise last week through the #PinkPonyPromise. I got off to a great start, but it's been slow going ever since. I'm hopeful it will get better and easier.

A Deal

I made a deal last week with the Madcap Gents. Stay tuned. Someone here may be crazy and it may just be me. No matter....I'm excited about our small partnership. Now, I've got to make some time and get to work.

A Weekend to Give Back

I'm working with Out of the Garden Saturday afternoon stuffing backpacks. I have made a point to get more involved in my community this year through the Junior League of High Point. It is an incredible feeling to help others right here at home. If you are not involved with your community I encourage you to find something you love doing and make a difference.
A lot of my interest started when I became interested in the reinvention of my hometown. We need a face lift and I want to see some of these things come to life. I've made sure I support as many of the local offerings as I can. Being on the sidelines just giving a project lip service isn't enough. Get involved!

A Great Shop

I'm still loving my owl coffee cup. I think I need another one for the office. I have a full out spread to do for Lily and Theo's Posh Pineapple here on the blog. Litsa has GREAT stuff in her shop and I could spend hours in there chatting and shopping and looking at things. Did you know she's got some great art work in there, too? Original works. A High-Low

I totally went out walking for exercise last week and forgot to take off my pearls. Seriously sporting yoga pants and pearls. As Jason Oliver says, "Sometimes you're up....sometimes you're down." Either way, it keeps you grounded.

What Weekend?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know it's Wednesday. I'm a busy girl and the beginning of the week required me to be up and at em earlier in the week. Furniture Market starts this week and it's a busy week for me in general.

Another great weekend allowed me to get some rest, but also included a great party for my brother and his fiance.

First and foremost, though, I went back to Fit Club. It was great and I'm glad to be back (even if I haven't been able to get there this week because I was carless--see next photo).

Saturday around lunchtime, my Jeep decided that it was out of water and overheated. There's a nice crack in the radiator. All I can say is that I am THANKFUL this didn't happen on my trip to Greenville. It could have and it would have been a nightmare. Please don't make fun of the molding I use to keep my hood open. It's a 2002 Jeep and this is the only way to keep the hood up. My rear glass has the same issue, but not quite a bad.

We had to let the car cool down before we could add water and get it to the shop. Nothing makes you better like BBQ and Cheerwine. After hitching a ride with my sister, we headed up to Kepley's for lunch.

Saturday afternoon, my sister and I dropped in on Litsa a Lily and Theo's Posh Pineapple. It's always a great visit with Litsa and she's always got new stuff in the shop. Saturday night, we headed up to Sumela to celebrate the union of two BIG-Ass families. I love the new term from my friend, Eric: MendenBrowns.

A GREAT time was had by ALL!

A rainy Sunday called for some creative time. I spent the day dabbling in watercolors working on a project for a friend. I've also got an order from mom to do the kids name ornaments. Only the first two grandkids have them on her tree right now, so we're missing four. They are also at the age where they notice if they are missing from the tree.

I'm glad I'm working creatively, as it really does feed my soul.

It's hard to believe it's Sunday again. It's even harder to believe that this is the LAST Sunday Social with Ashley and Neely.

1. How did you come up with your blog name?

My blog came from my former business, Lulu and Daisy. I used it to let my customers know of upcoming product releases, if there were delays in shipping, and studio updates. I'm happy to say that it grew into so much more.
The business name came from a high school nickname I had, Lulu, and my dear little Westie, Daisy. Mostly because any time I was in the studio, Daisy would be curled up on her bed right beside my art table.

2. What is your favorite thing about blogging?

I love the friends I've made while blogging. Blogging is a huge networking tool that brings people together from all over the world for the love of writing. I'm amazed at the women I've met and the bonds we share.

3. What is one thing you have discovered because of blogging and now can't live without?

Good gosh, I have no clue. I know there are plenty of products and recipes I've taken into the regular line-up in the kitchen.

4. Facebook or Twitter? and why?

I've never quite gotten the Twitter thing. You can't keep up with it all the time unless you are on it all the time. I like it for breaking news because a lot reporters will put out the news before it hits the air. My best, most recent, example is the search for the Boston Marathon bombers. I was able to give a play by play from Twitter to my friends in the room about 5 seconds faster than the news.
So, I'm a Facebook girl. I have a Twitter that I use to share photos, my blog posts, and retweets but really, that's it.

5. If one celeb read your blog who would you want it to be?

You know, I think people give too much attention to celebrities. US Magazine is the first to tell you (and you should listen)...THEY ARE JUST LIKE US. Their career is in the spotlight, so we deem them as important. Who is to say we aren't all living out our own little piece of celebrity. I'm glad to have readers who enjoy what I want to talk about here. I'm glad to share my finds, my ideas, my life here. I would like to be friends with Mindy Kaling, though. I think she is super-funny and I love to laugh.

6. What is something you want people to know about your blog?

My blog is a small extension of me. I don't live and breathe my blog, but it's all mine. It's all me. I'm not here to pretend to be something I'm not. I like my blog because it is a creative outlet for me when I don't have time to pull out all the paints or pencils or pastels (and it's been a while since I did any of that).

This link up has been fabulous and I love the women I've met here. Truly, this link up kept me blogging AT LEAST every Sunday. I've had a great time. Thank you, Neely and Ashley. Here's to the next BIG thing!

Back in the late 80's and through the 90's, I was a huge fan of the sitcom, Murphy Brown. I would love to see it on in syndication someplace. It was smart and funny and always good for thirty minutes of good writing and lots of laughter.

One of my all time favorite sayings comes from character, Stuart Best. "That's alls I know." I'm channelling my inner Stuart Best this morning and here's alls I know today:

I'm tired. I don't so much know it, as feel it.

Laughter is the best medicine. Surround yourself with people who make you laugh and you will be happy forever.

I believe we should all take part in some kind of creative expression whether it be painting, music, or dance. We are all creative whether you think you are or not and our souls crave the creativity.

I didn't see the lunar eclipse yesterday but I am fairly certain it interfered with my Direct TV signal and caused all kinds of other crazy things to happen.

People on Facebook who leave a comment without reading any of the previous comments annoy me. Their thoughts are typically redundant or the question has been answered already.

While I'm on my Facebook soapbox, I am also not a fan of people who like their own status. That's like me leaving a comment on my own blog post. We know you like it because you posted it. No need for the extra thumbs up.

The members of Fleetwood Mac (minus Stevie) are too tan. Honestly, they are almost orange. What are they thinking? They're like pumpkin bread with a streak of cream cheese. I guess that makes them the perfect fall guest on the Today Show.

I believe everyone should give back in their community. Get involved with something you believe in and watch how things change. Not to mention the friends you'll make along the way.

Networking is by far the most important thing in business. You never know who you will meet and how they may change your life. Be friendly, show up with a smile, and have conversations with people outside your circle.

What Weekend? History Rocks!

Another great weekend in High Point. There was so much going on around here, even I couldn't keep up. I can't believe we've got another weekend in the books. I feel like it's only Friday.

Friday night, I invited my niece and nephews over for a sleep-over. My niece was headed out of town, but the boys were on board for a fun night with their Aunt Lolli. They arrived after supper and stayed until 9:30. Yes, they are still at that age where a sleep-over sounds like a great idea, but in reality they prefer the comfort of Mommy in the next room and sleeping in their own beds. Fine by me. Do you know why? They were up at 6:30 on Saturday morning. Seriously. I lucked out, right?

We walked the dog in the warm night air and watched a few Halloween cartoons on the Disney Channel, then we played the game of LIFE. One was content watching more cartoons, but the other? Well, he proceeded to cream me at the game of LIFE.

Saturday morning, I got up around 8 and headed over to have breakfast with the boys. So, it was almost like a sleep-over, but I actually got some sleep.

We ate out doughnuts, as promised, and then all went our separate ways to get ready for our afternoon at the High Point Museum for History Rocks!

Above is the Hailey House and the Blacksmith Shop. A little history note, my great, great, great, great grandfather, Jonathan Welch, lived in the home in the 1800's. It is great to share this information with the kids. Keep history exciting by linking it back to your own history. Genealogy is highly underrated. I recommend researching your family history. You never know what you might find.

Our town is also home to Thomas Built Buses. Chances are the school buses in your area were built right here in my hometown. And what would an afternoon at the museum be without some arts and crafts? They made banjos and drums. Good thing they weren't coming home with me!

After all was said and done, we ended up in the local paper on Sunday morning. We were obviously having more fun than most.

High Point also hosted the first Get Down High Point on Saturday night. Though I didn't make this event--I'm not good being out in the cold (and yes 54 is COLD)--it was highly successful and I've heard a GREAT time! I had dinner with friends instead and had a wonderful time. We were jumping from topic to topic and laughing the entire evening. I hope to have many more evenings like this one.

Sunday was full of laundry and house work, visiting my parents, and preparing for the week. It's back to the grind this morning, though.

Good Sunday morning! It is quite chilly here this morning, but the sky is blue and the sun is shining. It's a glorious day here in North Carolina. Already made a quick trip to WalMart to pick up a few things for the week. I've got my dog staring at me wondering when she'll get her walk today. So let's get this started. I'm linking up with Neely and Ashley for some Social Sunday blog reading.

1. Favorite Month and why?

I love June. It's the beginning of summer. When I think of June, I think of blue skies, bright sunshine, possible trips to the beach. All of the things that bring a smile to my face and feeling of peace in my heart.

2. Favorite Holiday and why?

Christmas. I love the family time, the food, friends, and the spirit. I love the Christmas story, the hymns and carols. Most of all, I love the excitement from the children. The wonder in their eyes and the stories they tell me about what their ELF has been up to lately.

3. Are you getting the new iPhone or are you more of an Android person?

I'm fine with what I have (iPhone 5). Hearing that the iOS 8 update is a nightmare and it is the operating system of the new iPhone 6, I'm not in a hurry to run right out and get one. I'm also very fascinated with the Android. They seem to be quite ahead of the curve when it comes to the latest and greatest. I was an Android user prior to my purchase of the 5 and I'm not so sure I won't go back to it. The catch with my iPhone is that I have all of my music on iTunes. And this, my friends, is where they have be behind the eight ball. I have an android tablet and I love it. I'm not a 100% Apple user. I only wish someone would make a an app that would allow me to move my music. I'm sure there is something out there, but I'm not willing to BUY something to SEE if it will work. If you know of something, please tell me.

4. Most thoughtful gift you have ever received from someone?

Good gosh this is hard, but what has popped in my mind right off the bat is my rolling pin. Yep, a rolling pin. My great aunt, Lula, who recently passed away at 92, gave me a fabulous wooden rolling pin. It had been in my family for years. I was dabbling in a bakery business offering fabulously yummy, iced sugar cookies. She thought I was the perfect candidate for such a wonderful family heirloom. I am grateful to have such a small piece of family history.

5. Something you can’t wait to splurge on?

I splurged quite a bit in September on my trip to Greenville. I finally--FINALLY--bought a new pair of flip flops and retired the martini pair of Eliza B's I've been wearing for years. Replaced with my first-ever pair of Rainbows. They are every bit of fabulous that everyone says they are. I'm in love and only wish that it would stay warm so I could wear them more.

Yesterday I discovered I have very few Fall tops in my wardrobe. I like having basics in my wardrobe. I have a lot of turtlenecks, but not many sweaters or other tops for the cooler weather. These are things that I will star shopping for later in the month. I like to do my research. I am not big on buy trendy, but more the classics. I want something I can buy tomorrow and still wear it five years from now.

I'm off to walk my ever-patient dog. Make today a great one!

Five on Friday

Hello, Friday! It's so nice to see you again.

It has been a whirlwind week full of lots of work, lots of meetings, and lots of friends. I have barely had to post anything--which is quite evident, but I have been working on finding some things that will keep me posting on a regular basis. Then I remembered the 5 on Friday! Some great gals right here in my home state have been doing this link up for a while, so I thought I'd give it a shot again.

1. Happy Birthday to my baby sister! Here we are having fun at the Wyndham on our work-day---between shifts, of course. I'm so glad we work together and have so much fun together. Love you, sissy!

2. These women. I think Sadie said it best last night, "I just love this group!" This is our JL Board this year. I am SO glad (and so lucky) to be a part of such a great group of women. I've loved getting to know them. We truly have a good time together.

3. These guys. Looking forward to spending some time with them tonight and tomorrow.

4. e.l.f. makeup. Seriously, I am using this stuff daily. It doesn't stain. It's stays on ALL day. And the most fabulous thing about it.....it's affordable. I mean ANYONE can buy it. You can pick it up at Target or Walmart or you can buy it on line. Right now (and I mean for 20 more hours), they have 40% off the site and free shipping on orders over $40. And for $40 you could buy a TON of product.

5. When there's something strange in your neighborhood....who ya gonna call?

Krispy Kreme!

I can't wait to pick up a Ghostbuster's doughnut. Who am I kidding? We all know that I'm picking up a dozen and the boys and I will be on a sugar high all day tomorrow.

Gratitude

Wow, I woke up this morning thinking surely it had to be Friday. Nope. It's only Thursday. As disappointed as I may be, I've still got plenty to be thankful for today. I know the fall, especially the month of November, always brings about posts of gratitude. I started thinking that maybe being grateful should be something we share with each other far more often. I'm not starting a link up....at least no yet. I would like to share some things I'm grateful for today and hope that you will share some things as well. I always start with the basics, too.

Today I am grateful for:

My Home

I am lucky that I have such a great place to live. I'm lucky that I live near my parents. I have a great neighborhood where I walk quite a bit. My dog loves it, too.

My Job

I have said it once, I've said it 1000 times. I love my job. I work with great people doing great things.

My Family

My parents, my sisters, my brother, my husband, my cousins, aunts, uncles. I have been lucky to have grown up in such a large family that's so close. We continue to maintain the closeness even though we don't vacation together anymore. We rarely get everyone together over the holidays, but we certainly try. It's a bond that most families don't experience.

What Weekend: Keeping It Local

Another weekend at home is just what I needed after all the fun I had last weekend. I will post about that eventually. I think I'm still recovering, but it was all worth it.

After a fun time with some friends Friday night, we hit the town on Saturday. My sister and I took her two oldest on an artistic adventure. Our first stop, where I took NO photos, was at Price Nursery for Art in the Garden. My nephew's teacher was one of the artists, as well as friends, Sarah Lytle and Robin Rowe. All fabulous artists with great works.

Next stop...Triad Lighting. We went by to see Cousin Courtney's refurbished furniture that she has been working on with her mom. Great stuff, but of course, didn't pull out the camera until we were almost out the door. Hope to see her stuff on Facebook soon. If you need lighting or tile flooring, go see the Huggins at Triad Lighting!

Next stop was the grand opening of Staples. Yes, seriously, we stopped at Staples. Only because they had giant balloons and lots of flags all over the worst parking lot in town. Really, it is the worst in town and the people using it can't park worth a crap either. I digress. The boys wanted to check it out but I was disappointed because they weren't giving out anything. I'm all abou free, right?

Next stop was the Dollar Tree. My nephew has severe nut allergies and they have nut free candy corn there. I stocked up for him and we found these fabulous glasses, too.

Pretty soon, it was lunch time and there is no better place for lunch than Krispy Kreme. This, my friends, is why I am THE BEST AUNT EVAH! Who doesn't like doughnus for lunch?

After "lunch"we walked over to the High Point Public Library for Art on the Grass as well as the weekly farmer's market. This was very interesting and not very well publicized around town. I only knew about it because I saw the Shop Local post for it on Facebook. Otherwise, I hadn't heard about it.

We watched theGreensboro Scottish Dancers perform several dances. The boys were not that interested, but it was a great cultural experience.

Everyone wanted to head home and get the paints out. My sister had taken the boys to the Plein Air Paint Out last weekend and they were chomping at the bit to do some of their own painting. Love that these kids love art. Our whole family is artistic and we love seeing their excitement toward the arts. They were even more excited that I had actual canvas for them to use, too.

It might just be me, but I think these guys are very talented!

Next weekend....it's History Rocks! at the High Point Museum AND High Point Get Down beer + food + music festival on Saturday night.

Good morning! I have certainly been MIA this week. I've been really busy and trying to catch up from my girls weekend last week in Greenville. It was an incredible time catching up with old friends and making new ones.

1. What is your favorite magazine to read?

I typically read more home/food type magazines. I have subscriptions to Every Day with Rachel Ray and Better Homes and Gardens. I rarely have time to unwrap them from the plastic, though. I really enjoy Architectural Digest and catching up with People magazine.

2. What is the best thing you’ve seen online lately?

My online life typically tends to be on Facebook or on Instagram. I don't do a lot of surfing on line. The coolest thing I have seen is this Gigapixel photo from the ECU/UNC game. I'm still looking for us, but I know that we were late and left early. So....there's a chance we aren' in this picture. It's really cool, though. You should check it out here. I seriously don't think we're in it because we were busy with our own pics at the tailgate.

3. Who is your favorite celebrity to follow on Instagram or Twitter?

I hardly use my twitter any more. I push posts to it, but I don't read anything that comes through on it. I'll be honest, if there is some national breaking news, it's one of the BEST ways to get the news before it pops up on TV. Otherwise, I just don't use it much.

Social Sunday: It's Fall Y'all

Whew! I'm about 12 hours late with this post today. I've been out of town on a girls weekend having a great time. I still wanted to participate today. It is officially fall, y'all. Nothing better to ring in fall than a great football rivalry and lots of good friends.

1. What is your favorite part of Fall?

Crunchy leaves, crisp air, football, and Halloween! I'm a huge fan of dressing up.

2. Do you have anything special planned for Fall?

My special plans for the fall were this weekend. A weekend back at college with old friends doing what we loved most about college.....tailgating.

3. What is Fall like in your area?

In North Carolina, we are lucky to have all four seasons. Our summer was a bit mild this year, so that makes me think we may have a hard, cold winter ahead. Though it's been quite warm today, it is much more fall like. The shadows are getting longer and I'm ready to see the leaves changing.

4. What is your favorite Football team to cheer for(college or professional)?

For college, I went to East Carolina--and I'm, of course, a fan. I also love NC State football and the Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, and the San Diego Chargers (you might see my love of former NC State QBs here).

5. Do you decorate for Fall? Show us pics!!!
Nah....I am not really a seasonal decorator. I just don't have time, nor do I have the storage space for seasonal decor. Christmas, yes, bu others, no.

Hello Keurig 2.0

It's a Review

Notice: I received this product for free through Influenster and Keurig to test and review. All opinions expressed here are mine (and one of my husband's).

About a week and a half ago, I received an email notice from Fed Ex that I had a package coming from Influenster. I always take my surveys from Influenster, but I really couldn't remember the last one or what types of products it could be. That is until I received another notice that it was some type Keurig. Holy smokes! Really? A free Keurig? I had only gotten my first one back in February from my parents as a birthday gift. I loved it because there was never wasted coffee. Coffee is generally expensive and I cannot stand to waste it.

I was excited, but I had no idea that it would be this mack daddy Keurig. It arrived on Thursday in a giant box. I couldn't wait to rip it open and set it up. I was going out of town that weekend, so I knew I wouldn't be using it until I returned.

Sunday afternoon upon my return, I pulled everything out of the box and began setting it up. At first glance, the shiny new Keurig is beautiful! One of the first things I noticed, though, was it seemed cheap in comparison to the smaller one I have. Very plastic, shiny, but plastic. I immediately wondered how the carafe would hold up and hold heat.

If you've ever had a Keurig, then you know there are some things that need to be put together and prepared for use. There's a place for the water filter. As with any filter, it needs to be soaked and rinsed prior to use. The plastic housing that holds the filter was very difficult to pull apart. There is a plastic snap on each side of it; however, neither side seemed to want to work in tandem. That said, mine ended up breaking off on one side.

I tried to superglue it back together, but it was having none of that. I was able to add the filter and snap the one side back on with no problem. It snapped into place inside the water house and I was ready to brew.

Now, despite that I felt this machine was a little too plastic, it has plenty of bells and whistles. So many, in fact, that it really won me over.

First of all, it's digital with day-glo.

With all kinds of settings, too. An automatic filter reminder in case you never look at the water filter setting inside the machine. Lighting options are a favorite. There's a small light in the bottom of the water house that can be used as a kitchen nightlight.

Green, Red, Blue, and White options for the lighting I mentioned earlier. Of course, I selected my favorite color--green!

Now ready to be filled up with water to brew my next morning's cup-o-joe.

Did I mention it's programmable? Yep, no need to wait for the water to heat up to brew that perfect pot. You can set it to brew. I used this feature every day and woke up like I was in a Folgers commercial to the yummy smell of fresh brew.

The machine came with a box of 8 of 2.0 K-cups. These are a bit larger than the regular ones so you can make a pot. The pot will make up to 4-5 cups. Not your standard pot of coffee, but great for someone who drinks about that much in the morning. I am one of those people. I have one to one and half cups while getting ready in the morning. Then I fill my travel mug to head to the office. The 4 -5 cup setting was a perfect match.

The only down side of that, is there are two of us, so we would have to use a second K-cup to brew more or use the single servings. My husband noticed that the large cup setting for the single serve would leave about an inch and a half to the top of his travel mug. I have not verified that he used the correct setting, though. I always think that sometimes it's user error. I know my smaller Keurig does the same thing, though.

The first morning, I had it set for 6 a.m. and by 6:07, my coffee was ready for consumption. It made a delicious cup of coffee, too. Hot and tasty. I'm a big fan of the doughnut shop blends and that is the majority of what was sent. A few other flavors, too. Breakfast blend, French Vanilla, Hazelnut....all very tasty and ones that I had tried in the single serve.

Overall, I think the product is great. It makes a great cup of coffee. I like that I can use it when I don't need to make a full pot or if I am in a hurry and don't have time to wait. The 2.0 gives you the option for making a single or a small pot. I also love the coffee and the options they offer are yummy.

There are also things I don't like about it, but some of it is generalized for the product itself. First, I don't think it's economical or environmentally friendly. Look, I'm not a die-hard tree hugger, but I don't think Keurig is real concerned about their carbon footprint.

I think because of the K cups individual nature, they are expensive and wasteful. I've shopped them on line, on sale, and at Costco and the bottom line is: they are expensive. If my husband and I use this machine daily, we are going to use 2 of the 2.0 Kcups a day. A box of 8 is $13.99 ($12.59 as a Keurig member on their site). I think I could go to Starbucks every day for a regular cup and have someone else make my coffee. I do have a reusable single filter for it, but honestly having to clean it out each time to reuse....not worth it.

As for the machine itself, I don't thing the carafe keeps the coffee warm enough for long enough. After all, it's plastic and a stainless steel carafe (available for purchase for $29.99 on their web site) is going to work much better for retaining the heat. I have had to reheat my coffee in the microwave on numerous occasions. Knowing I can get a stainless makes it that much better though. After all, they sent this to me for free, so I would gladly spring for the upgrade.

I have enjoyed using this machine for the past week. I am now out of the 2.0 Kcups, but I have a few individuals left to use. I haven't decided if I'll use them this week or save them for when I run out of coffee and don't have time to get to the grocery. I know one thing, though. My regular Colombian Folgers is not going to be half as delicious as the Donut Shop coffee.

I highly recommend a Keurig for a single person or if you live in a house and you are the only coffee drinker. This model would also be great on hand for company. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that this thing also brews a fabulous cup of tea and hot cocoa. So for the versatility, taste, and ease of use, my dear Keurig, you get a 10!

What Weekend?

I'm always amazed at how fast my weekends fly by. I always feel like I could have gotten a little more done or had a little more fun. I've also realized I like to go out one night and stay home the other. There is no way I can make plans to go out both nights and feel like I have gotten adequate rest.

Friday night, I went out with my Greensboro friends. We went to the Green Queens Bingo. That's drag queen bingo for those of you keeping up at home. I had never been and it was so much fun! I wasn't a winner, but had a great time with some great people. I also saw some great enertainment!

Social Sunday: Favorites

Good Sunday morning to you! It's been an overcast, cool and somewhat rainy weekend here in North Carolina. The best part is that it's cool today. It's really beginning to feel like fall.

I wasn't ready for summer to end, but now that it's cooling off, I'm getting excited about fall. The cooler weather makes me want to sleep. I slept REALLY late today and I feel like I could go back to sleep right now.

Well, it's that time of the week to link up with Neely and Ashley for Social Sunday. This week's questions are all about Favorites.

1. Favorite scent(s)

I have more than one favorite scent. Vanilla, an ocean breeze, my mama's chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven. I also love Ralph Rocks from Ralph Lauren. They don' make it anymore, but it's a divine scent.

I also love when the summer air fills with the sweet scent of Confederate Jasmine.

2. Favorite food(s)

I love Italian. I love all Italian, but a good lasagna is my favorite. I love pizza, too, but more specifically, Sir Pizza and Elizabeth's Pizza (this is more of a New York style). I also love chocolate with the passion of a crack addict.

3. Favorite sound(s)

Waves crashing along the shore. I am a beach girl and I would live there if I could. I also love to hear my nieces and nephews laughter. The uncontrollable giggles melt my heart.

5. Best memory of the year so far

I'm just not sure what my favorite memory of the year has been. I've had lots of changes going on in my life. I would have to say changing jobs would be my favorite, but I'm not sure that counts as a memory so much as an event.
