Mixing Black and Cognac

Here I am. Crawling my way back into the blogging world. I've been gone for a long time, mostly because of school, and secondly because I felt as though I'd lost my blogging groove...That being said, hopefully I can be back for a consistent run.

As far as I know, wearing brown and black together has been bit of a taboo...But that's where cognac comes in. I've seen girls mixing cognac boots with their mainly black outfits now, and all of a sudden, I found myself lusting for a pair of the perfect cognac boots. Here's my try at mixing black and cognac.

Interview with Magdalena Trever!

Yesterday at the 944 magazine Cabana party, I caught up with Magdalena Trever, knit-wear bikini designer. (She was showing her designs there)...

The Fashion Files: What is your inspiration and main influence for this collection?

Magdalena Trever: My main influence is really sixties nineteen seventies that era like the hippies, the mod chic I’ve kinda captured that whole time—and I really brought back the knitted bikinis because you know during the sixties they were really popular. And I’ve brought them back in a new way where it’s not just crocheted, average bikini, it’s multi-colored you know, different knit stitches, all very unique, one-of- a kind couture type weaving of yarns. So they stand out a lot but they have that sixties essence and that early seventies vibe.

TFF: So when’d you decide you wanted to get into design, particularly bikinis?

MT: I decided I wanted to get design about six years ago, I really loved knitwear (which is knitting) and I went to into school for it and I got into bikinis-- it was about a year and a half ago, it was just with a friend—we were gonna do it as a side project once I graduated from school (I was making clothes already). It was just a hobby and it picked up from there. People started liking them, I started doing shows, and the shows got bigger and then…Full blown bikini designer.

TFF: Who’d you say are your biggest influences as a designer?

MT: I really like Ashley Paige—she does knitted bikinis—and they’re really cool; they’re a little bit more simple, but I really like how she did the breakthrough of re-inventing the knitted bikini. And then Missoni is one of my all-time favorite knitwear designers. I love YSL even though I’m very colorful. I’m very influenced by pushing boundaries like he did in the very beginning, like pantsuits on women. I like that, I like the concepts, I just want to push the bikini and I guess if I was YSL I’d be pushing the way a woman wears the bikini.

TFF: So who’s the Magdalena Trever woman—who do see wearing your designs?

MT: Someone that is fun, someone who wants to be different, wants to stand out, but not for the wrong reasons. They want to be unique, they wanna be eclectic, they want to be diverse, you know they have that interesting personality… They get it, they have the well - rounded package, they’re either a writer, some sort of artist, people that make things happen. Someone I think who is interesting herself—she travels around, she’s just an interesting human being, you know? They wanna be different.

TFF: So this isn’t really a Playboy type thing…

MT: It’s sexy, I’ve gone to the Playboy mansion, sold bikinis to playmates…But it’s like sixties sexy like if you were to compare it to a spandex bikini with rhinestones all over it it’s not that…It’s not stripper sexy, it’s more the sixties sexy where women were covered but they were hot you know?

TFF: Do you think any experiences you’ve had growing up have fed into your design aesthetic?

MT: Yes, my grandma was an amazing knitter and sewer so every summer when I’d go visit her she’d teach me stuff, I was so bored in Nebraska (there’s nothing to do…) and I loved it, and it stuck with me, kind of.

TFF: Wow, my grandma tried to teach me knitting when I was like, in second grade I made one stitch in two hours and got bored.

MT: Well there was nothing there but cornfields! (Laughs)

TFF: So have you had any major successes and failures in trying to do this?

MT: I did Magic, you know the major trunk show in Vegas where you get orders…It was scary it was my first time doing it…Everyone has been around forever that was there. I set up my booth, had stores come around and take orders and stuff, it was scary because I felt unorganized because it was my first time, but it was a good moment because I was like, “oh I can do this, people are interested!” So it was scary but a good experience at the same time.

TFF: Where do you see your designs in the future and are you going to branch out into other items?

MT: Yes! Well first I’m going to stick to bikinis, really get well known for the bikinis and then I’ve done men’s jeans, women’s dresses, I can do jackets, accessories, a bunch of stuff. But I’m going to stick to the bikinis, once that grow then get into the other stuff that I love to make.

TFF: So really grow the core concept and then work around that, like the perfume, etc?

MT: Make a whole line, yeah…Like a lifestyle around one concept, should be cool, one ideal woman…

TFF: Thank you, is there anything else you’d like people to know?

MT: I just really enjoy what I do and I think it shows. I just love making stuff…

Hey dolls! Sorry for the lack of posting, school just started and it's been a tad insane. I'll get a Friday Fashionista up next week, I think it's far too late now for it to count. Oh and thanks for all the lovely comments ladies, I don't have time at the moment to go back to every post and thank you individually, but yeah, here you go, thank youuuuu!

Alright so here's what Hayden and I have been doing. We decided to do a "one piece many ways" type feature. For our first edition, we chose this fabulous Nina Ricci leather jacket...

And "wore" it four ways!

Here's the jacket worn over a cocktail dress (left) and then worn out on the town (right)

In this second set, we "wore" it casually(left)--the way you'd run errands, etc. and took it to work (right)!

The whole point of this was to show that even "tricky" pieces like a leather jacket can be worn anywhere, given the way you accessorize them and tone them up or down.

What'd you think ladies?

What's blogging been like for you?

Alright this is gonna be a completely off topic post, but I think one worth your while. Or I certainly hope so.

When I jumped into the blogging game about six months ago, I wasn't really sure what I was doing. Hell, I didn't know half as much about fashion as I do now. I don't think I understood the
"seasons" as much as I do now, or really how much WORK blogging is...I didn't realize bloggers are secretly geeky. I mean you should SEE the amount of HTML that has to go through here. Then there's the deal with promoting the blog...Blogging etiquettes. It's a ton to process at once. Then you join ALL the networks, couturious, IFB, etc. Never sure which one is necessary. For me, I've not really gotten any hits from them...My biggest success has to be Twitter.

My experience with blogging has been largely a positive one. I've only recieved a few angry and rude comments, my hits have only increased, and despite it all, I've been able to keep blogging fairly consistently. But, is it wrong that I get follow envy? Like sometimes I see blogs that started after mine that have like, ten times the followers I do and I just wonder...Where did I go wrong?

So...what's blogging been like for you? Have you had issues hitting your stride? Do you think it's worth it? I'd really like to hear what you have to say.

"I live currently in Hannover, Germany and I'm nineteen years old. My favorite outfits are smart outfits. Wearing blazers and T-shirts without the standard neck, my favorites are V-Necks. I wear skinny jeans most of the time and just wear casual pants if I want to chill at home or chill with friends. I started with my own LOOKBOOK in May 2010. I don't want to fashion or art to be my occupation, that is nothing for me. I like it how it is: as my favorite hobby.

My favorite music is of course Electro/House Music, but I also like songs about love or broken hearts if they are nicely done. I don't have a favorite band, I'm listening to anyone's music if I like their song...
My favorite food is asian! I could eat rice everyday I think, haha. And I love food made with curry... that's like a dream everytime. I also like the whole choice of American fast-food like burger king, McDonalds, Pizza Hut...those things.

The stores, hmm. I have to say there are days, when I can't find anything good at any store. And I'm a absolute internet shopper, if I go to stores directly in a city, I normally dont find something I would really buy.

I think I don't have any one favorite store, I just check around the internet and watch for good looking clothes I would wear. But if I would have to say any name I would say that TOPMAN is my favorite. Anyways, there are often days where I can't find there something too."

Meet Hayden!

I'm pleased to announce our first collaboration here on "The Fashion Files". Hayden and I have some exciting stuff in store for you! But first, you should meet Hayden...

Hayden is a nineteen year old blogger and fashion illustrator (aspiring designer) from London. He's been drawing since he was three (back then, he specialized in cartoons) and as he kept drawing, his art evolved into gorgeous fashion illustrations. Here's some of his recent stuff:

I saw Hayden's illustrations just recently-- I follow him on Twitter. I'm glad I did! His stuff is gorgeous, feminine, classic and beautiful. Basically, most of the stuff he designs is right up my alley! It's a beautiful mix of Marc Jacobs, Dior, and Chanel...

I hope this little preview of what Hayden does has hyped you up for our upcoming collaboration! Keep a watch for it, I have a sneaking suspicion you're gonna LOVE it.

The Monster Ball

Alright guys, strap on...This one's gonna be one hell of a post.

So last night, I went to Gaga's concert, and obviously I dressed up! You can't go without dressing up...Basically The Monster Ball was just a huge dance party, with Gaga's message of, "here you can free yourself and be yourself. The FREAKS (because most of her fans are from portions of society often shunned) are outside and they've locked.the.f*cking.doors." The whole night was a fierce tranny mess. It was surreal seeing her live, because she has such a persona about her you can't imagine someone like that is really a live person versus a character. She was absolutely spot on, never missed a cue. She was just perfect, and dare I say it, she's the Michael Jackson of our generation. (For the record, The Fame Monster has surpassed Thriller in sales.) Seeing her live has reaffirmed why I am a "Little Monster".

So here's the look I imitated:

So here's how I did that look, with jeggings and a shirt.

I was going to wear pumps, but they just didn't feel right with this look--I decided to wear these booties, they looked funkier and a little more Gaga.

And of course, ACCESSORIES!

I was delighted when I saw that Gaga and I wore the same makeup. I did an extreme cat eye, with pink lipstick (Nars in "Funny Face")

How'd my look score? Here are some other fans...

Obviously my look wasn't as extreme! But, at least people understood I was dressed up. My mom and her friend didn't dress up loads, but as we were getting into our row, there was a gay guy there. My mom and her friend walked by no comments... Then as I'm walking by this guy, he stops me, grabs me by the hips, and goes, "HAVE FUN GURLLLLLL". It's like, "k I'm gonna waste my energy on an actual Gaga fan..."

Anyways, I had a fabulous time, and I hope you enjoyed this post!

I was trying to get this up all weekend but blogger was being rude, and I ended up having no time after Friday...

Ok, so I hate that song...But it's only appropriate to have this as the post title thanks to my Ocelot print scarf. I was running to a review session for this final that's ruining my life. [EDIT--took it yesterday, think it went decently]

Jeans, Gap; Shoes, Converse; Tank, American Apparel; Blazer, Gap; Scarf, random Indian bazaar.

So I'm tired...And I have no idea why I look so supremely pissed off in ALL the photos?!! I'm not sure how I like the look of the blazer and converse, but I've seen tons of guys (and gals) pull off the look successfully so I thought, "why not give it a shot?"

Now, on to the polish. Remember I tried to copy this mani?

Here's how it went for yours truly...

The color I used for my Tiffany blue was about a shade darker than the true Tiffany blue that V. was wearing, I believe hers is "For Audrey" by China Glaze. In the bottle, Essie's "Turquoise and Caicos" looks like Tiffany blue. On my nails, not as much-- I think it's because I like to use three coats of polish... Comparison below:

This week, I'm wearing "Mint Candy Apple". Will post pictures soon, but you can't even imagine how long I've looked for these two colors...I literally squealed when I saw them in store.

FINALLY, I dragged myself to take photos with an actual camera.

That Frank Sinatra song has been stuck in my head today. Fitting, because I'm wearing super vintage-y style pumps today.

In the first photo, the whole outfit. Second photo, you can see my nail polish this week (Essie in "Chubby Cheeks") and the embellishment on the t-shirt, and in the final photo the shoes...

Not much more to say about this look, other than the fact that I cuffed my pants to make the shoes go POW.

Upon stumbling on this over at The Fashionista Next Door, I decided to enter The Gap Denim Styling Contest over at Couturious. I've always SWORN by Gap's jeans, mainly because I can't justify paying over $200 on a pair of pants... Plus, I can get three pairs of Gap jeans for the price of one pair of Sevens, etc. I highly recommend Gap's Always Skinny fit, just as a side note. It's my go to.

Getting perfect waves

Not to toot my own horn or anything but I've recently mastered the art of getting perfect waves.

The picture below is something I took ten seconds before I had to leave for work, don't hate! Maybe I'll get a better picture soon, but for the time being, I'm wearing yoga pants and a deep-v from American Apparel, so it sure ain't happenin' today!

Here's how I do it...

1) Wash your hair, and condition it really well. I prefer Joico K-PAK intense hydrator. When you finish conditioning, put your hair in a bun, and if you have bangs, try to avoid using a towel for more than two to three minutes.
2) Get a small handful of mousse-- think the size of an average egg yolk, and work it into the roots of your hair. Don't plop it in from on top-- work it in from the underside of your hair.
3) Blow-dry straight. I use a paddle brush, and push the roots up as I'm drying my hair, so that I get some volume in there. Sweeping your hair to the opposite side when you're drying also helps. If you have bangs, dry those into place first!
4) Once you're done blow-drying... Here's where things get a little tricky. I prefer using a flat-iron to curl my hair. I have the CHI flat iron that lets you curl and straighten, so I use that. To get waves, it's all about putting your hair in the iron, then pulling it forward and clockwise (for the right side of your head) and counterclockwise (for the left). The looser you pull the looser the curl, the tighter the pull, the tighter the curl.
5) Use the same technique you did with the mousse to muss up your roots a bit so the waves don't look overly perfect.
6) Finish with light hairspray.

Can you do da cuff?

So basically this morning I was on Twitter, and I saw this article on six ways to roll your jeans...

Got suddenly inspired to cuff my jeans and I attempted "the bubble." My pictures today stink because I had a really hard midterm and I just wanted to get into PJs... I was so tired I came back in the car and immediately fell asleep...

Oh and I discovered these fabulous sandals I've had for about a year... So today's outfit was cuffed jeans, tunic, scarf, blazer, and ankle-height sandals... Not sure how else to describe them....
