Portoviejo in April 2025: Navigating the Lingering Effects of a Severe Rainy Season

As we move through April 2025 here in Portoviejo, Manabí, the tail end of the rainy season is upon us. Typically, while the peak of the rains in Manabí occurs in February and March, April can still bring significant precipitation, as noted by nomadseason.com. However, this year has been far from typical.

Ecuador, and particularly our province of Manabí, along with Los Ríos and Guayas, experienced an exceptionally severe rainy season in 2025, as reported by ReliefWeb. The sheer volume and frequency of rainfall led to widespread flooding and other significant impacts across the region. The National Secretariat for Risk Management rightly declared a state of emergency in response to the scale of these events.

Here in Manabí, the consequences have been deeply felt. The flooding we've witnessed in areas like Calderón

and even parts of downtown Portoviejo, as mentioned in my previous post, is a direct result of this intense rainy season. The numbers speak for themselves: a large number of individuals have been affected, many have been displaced from their homes, and we've seen significant damage to homes and vital infrastructure. Tragically, the agricultural sector has also suffered substantial crop and animal losses.

While nomadseason.com indicates a general decline in rainfall in April compared to February (around 200 mm) and March (around 227 mm), the cumulative effect of the preceding months, coupled with any further April showers, has left many areas still vulnerable. The saturated ground and swollen rivers take time to recede, and the recovery process is ongoing.

The images shared within our community of flooded streets and submerged homes in Calderón, Santa Ana and downtown Portoviejo are a stark reminder of the power of nature and the challenges we face. The severe flooding in 2025 has undoubtedly made this rainy season a particularly arduous one for the residents and businesses of Manabí.

Despite the hardships, the spirit of "Manabí power" – the resilience and determination of our people – shines through. We continue to support each other, working together to overcome these challenges. The focus remains on recovery, rebuilding, and finding ways to mitigate the impact of future severe weather events. Life in Portoviejo in April 2025 is a testament to our community's strength in the face of adversity, even as we navigate the lingering effects of an exceptionally wet and challenging rainy season.

Carnival 2017 in and around Quito

Hi all, I am hopeless at consistency when it comes to these blog posts. I am just busy with work at the minute. Anyhow, Carnival every year without fail. My Carnival has been spent on the beach soaking up the sun, getting burnt and looking like a lobster while supping on a few beers,but living in Quito, we decided to give it a miss and start exploring a few places. I have been asked many a time about certain areas, and I could never give an honest opinion until now, so here are the 3 places in question and the opinions based on first glance.
Otavalo

I hear of many expats living here or trying to sell the thought of living here, but remember, I am not retired, so maybe I just see a different picture of all of this. It is quite a big place spread out with lovely houses, which may be a good enough reason to move there. But the main attraction is the handicrafts Otavalo has to offer. They have really amazing clothes, rugs, and plenty to choose from. I was well impressed. I will take my mother there when she comes over. I am sure she will love it, but for me, once you look past the crafts, what else is there?

My brother-in-laws agreed that they have been here a few times over the years, but once you have seen the crafts once or twice, nothing really lures you back. How many times can you go to the same craft place before you get sick?

If you have never been, I suggest you definitely go, but to live there, not for me. Here are some pictures we took, then I will move on to Cotacachi.

Cotacachi

OK for this place. It is known as a gringo community, not from my mouth but from the locals. First impressions: there are some beautiful houses outside of town; the air seemed quite fresh, and looking at the billboards, white water rafting must go on here. When driving in, the place reminded me of Conocoto in the Valle de los Chillos; same sort of layout, in my opinion, but Cotacachi is known for its leather products. I saw some amazing jackets, shoes, and bags. The motorcycle jackets looked like the real deal. If I get a bike, I will come back and buy it from here. I thought the prices were a tad expensive for an Ecuadorian mind, but if you are a tourist with money to blow, you will find some nice things. Ambato is by far the cheapest and best, in my opinion, for these kinds of products, but Cotacachi is certainly on the map when you talk about leather goods.

I noticed a large group of gringos attending what appeared to be a local gathering. We passed the group, and one man spoke up and said there are far too many gringos coming into town these days. My family understood because most of them speak English, so they laughed as if to say something rich coming from you bitawkward when you hear that.

We crossed the road and saw another group. It was hard to hear, but they were whining about someone who had moved here, and they clearly didn't like the person. A day out, you must do it. To live there is a no from me. These people must walk up and down the high street every weekend saying the same crap , because again, when you look past the shops, there is nothing there either, which we all agreed on. Here are some pics of the leather products. The quality and craftsmanship that go into these products is amazing.

Ibarra was the next place we ventured through. The climate, which was much warmer than before, reminded me of Manabi, but it was bearable here because of the breeze. The Yahuarcocha lagoon: this is where the Spaniards invaded years ago. Many died in the lake, so they say all the blood of these people lies at the bottom of the lake. A nice little story. So we had some food. If you drive around the right hand side, there are many restaurants there. So we went for the fish, rice, salad, and empanadas. The fish were caught straight out of the lake. Nice food, highly recommended.

The final place was Atuntaqui.

In most towns and cities, you are sure to find places that sell fake clothes made in Ecuador, but some are really good. I was told this is where you get the best clothes, and I will agree with some of the things I saw and bought. It wasn't just busy for Carnival, it is like this all the time, so I was told. Maybe I missed something in each of these locations, but I can get most of this back in Quito without making the long drive. I didn't get any pictures here, but a video I will try to put up soon. I hope this explains a few things about these locations If you have been here and have a different perspective, please do share. The final pic was taken as we were heading home. Is it expensive to live in Quito?

This is a constant question being asked that I see on so many forums, and as you can imagine, so many mixed answers. So my little take on this is a short answer of "No." It is not expensive if you follow the correct path.

The path I am talking about is the Ecuadorian way and not the gringo way. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. If you want to live a high-end luxury lifestyle here, then expect to pay for it, especially in the north. If you want to spend over 2K per month on rent, you can find places that charge that number or close to it. This is all to do with personal preference.

If you mention the area of Cumbaya, the first thing that comes out of an Ecuadorian's mouth is gringos, and ones that have money automatically labeled just for living there.

But my favorite is a gringo stating that if you live in the Sur, then that means you are poor, wrong!

Many professionals like doctors and lawyers opt for this life as they can buy or rent property at affordable prices and simply travel to work like most.

For example, you can rent a 3 bedroom apartment for $180 per month and your bills, including water, power, internet, and gas, are a lot cheaper than living on the coast. The power and water here I have found is $25 a month for all appliances on washing, TV, stereo, that sort of thing. Generally, that is the going rate Renting a furnished property may be $300 a month, but if you are planning on buying in the area, you can pick up furniture at decent prices.

Visiting the shopping malls, If you want to buy your favorite original designer brands as you would back home, expect to pay a lot more, sometimes triple the price. Importing these goods pays the price, which is why it can be expensive. However, this is Ecuador, and not everyone would go out and spend $150 on a top, which is why there are endless amounts of stores back street shops that sell everything for next to nothing. They are fakes, but they are very good fakes.If you don't like what you see, there are many highly skilled tailors who can make whatever you want at a very low price. Sizes are a problem here for the taller or larger person, so custom made is sometimes the best way.

All of this is available outside of street food or local watering holes; you can literally walk past a cafe or restaurant every 30 seconds, so you will be spoiled for choice.

I'm not saying to avoid shopping malls because I enjoy spending time there with my family.It isn't all that expensive, but when food is in high demand, like fresh produce, etc., I suggest going to the market. The Mercado is seriously a big place where they sell everything. All your meat, fruit, and vegetables. You can get a lot for your money there and also haggle to get an even better deal. Just looking at the layout is an experience in itself. So much to choose from. I highly suggest you shop there.

Looking away from the mall and focusing on some recreation time with the family or friends, we have two huge parks minutes away, football pitches,tennis courts, kids play areas,go karting, paintball,inflatable castles,bike tracks, or just places to sit, chill out, eat and drink from the stalls. The value of this is priceless. You will find Quito really is a great place for family activities, especially on a nice Sunday afternoon out and costs nothing really.

There are many schools to choose from. My boy is at a private school, which has a transportation service to and from the house. Price wise, it is on par with his old school in Portoviejo, but I feel he has a great set up here. The teachers are great, the school itself is secure and very well organised also boasting a good standard of English, so if the teacher doesn t understand what he is saying in Spanish, he simply tells the English teacher. It s a relief knowing he is enjoying it and working hard even though he tells me he does nothing.

Unlike living in Manabi, I don't feel the need for a car up here because everything I need is right here: the local Quicentro Sur is only a few minutes away, transport accessibility is excellent, with the Trole bus running from South to North right on the doorstep, and the main terminal, Quitumbe, gateway to Ecuador, isn't far either. For the price of 25 cents, you can't go wrong,but the only thing I hate is that it can get very busy,like sardines in a tin, so hold onto your valuables and don't switch off.

I can't lie, I miss my Manabi life on some days, but there is so much opportunity up here. The people are great, always saying hello to me wherever I go, and because I am the only Englishman, or should I say foreigner, living in this area, I am recognised on a daily basis, all smiles and some comments on the football. It didn't take long for them to know that my team is Newcastle. It is as though people search for my team just to have a quick convo or

So, enough babbling; the original question was, "Is it expensive to live in Quito?" No just look around and get a feel for it.

Ecuador Earthquake the day Manabi fell

Hi guys, I wasn't going to write this story/report, but it is out now. Although it was a living nightmare, not just for me and my family, but the whole of Manabi, we are glad to be alive. That's the main thing. The government is doing a great job. Raphael Correa really has impressed. Hopefully, within five years, Manabi will be in a position to attract tourism again. This was totally unexpected and something the people of Manabi will never forget. I would like to thank all those who donated. It really did help some of the locals that were really in need.

Since we've moved up to Quito, there will be fewer posts on Manabi aside from the ongoing progress, which I'll keep you updated on. We're still having earthquakes of a lower magnitude here in Quito, and I can't say when this will stop, but if you're planning on coming here, do some research, or I'll give you my honest opinion in the comments below.

After being asked various questions I have finally created an ebook to help you with everything. Many of you have similar queries which is understandable. The book is called Ecuador Expats living in Manabi the truth!

Many people assume I am retired and just living out my years here, but this really isn't the case. If you go back through all of my posts, you will see that all of this began with just a simple holiday on my own, which escalated into living here full time.

As previously stated, Manabi, or even Ecuador, is not for everyone. People simply cannot adjust to the culture or do without their usual comforting luxuries, and I do not hold that against them. It is a lot to ask for at times. Many people I have met have lasted only a matter of weeks or even days before having a change of heart. Not what they expected, and rightly so.

In my opinion, the people that do this are retired expats. They have plenty of money and not a care in the world, but when things go wrong they can be like vultures preying on a new expat to arrive, butter them up and before you know it you are doing business with them, renting a property from them or even being persuaded to buy this cheap property that isn't so cheap after all.

There are probably many of my readers who are present expats who will be cursing me and saying I am talking out of my behind, but I have briefly chatted with a few people who felt cheated when they came here, but more so they felt disappointed because they thought they could trust their own, which is shocking behaviour. Who do you trust?

I am not saying every expat does this, but there seems to be quite a trend going on. I have even been approached on a few occasions. Maybe I should have signed up to an Ecuador group. People seem nice, then all of a sudden they are pushing me to invest. When they realize I have been living here longer than them, they ease off. Another example: a foreigner tried to dupe me into paying $30,000 more than the asking price for a property; it's not nice and really irritates you, so I tread carefully when meeting expats.

Why some expats could be destroying Ecuador

This is an interesting topic that has recently been brought to my attention. Is it really true? Is it possible that some expats could be destroying Ecuador? At first, I thought it could be the overcrowding in certain hotspots. I do realise that more and more expats seem to reside in the same area and the community is growing largely, so I have listened to some views from a mixed group of Ecuadorians and here are some key points which I totally agree with after speaking about,

To begin, yes, expats are trying to change areas to suit their needs and not fit into society; however, is this intentional? Maybe bars,cafes, restaurants, that sort of thing, in my eyes, is normal. People who are not retired need to make a living,which also gives people a choice on what food they eat, but if it is affecting an Ecuadorian business because of cheaper prices, then yes, they may have a point here, which brings me onto the main issue that has been highlighted here.

Real Estate

This really is ugly at the moment, and I hadn't realised until it was pointed out to me, but expats that are looking to make money big time over here are the ones who buy up land in cash, build department complexes etc and charge a ridiculous price for them both for sale and for rent,which no Ecuadorian can afford.

A doctor's salary isn't bad depending on the level, but I briefly commented on a 3 bedroom property on the first floor that was going for $70,000; nice area, etc. He said it was doable, but he felt it was quite expensive and he could get better for the same price or for less. So he nearly had a heart attack when I showed him a new listing that I found on the internet, a 2 bedroom apartment on the beach, which isn't really developed yet, as it still doesn't have basic amenities, but this was going for $205,000, so quite a few swear words there. Who the hell puts a tag on a property like that? No intention of selling to locals, but rather to another foreign MUG! Yes, a MUG, because only a complete idiot would go there and say that is reasonable.

So, yes, I am beginning to understand what some people are thinking now. Too many properties are being built at exorbitant prices, which may eventually drive some locals out. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. If a foreigner can command that price and high rent, why can't an Ecuadorian? Simply, no one has that kind of money.

So coming into this country and throwing your weight around because you have money is so wrong. By all means, set yourself up in a nice house. If you need to earn a small income, there are many ways, but day light robbery to hit the big time is pretty bad. Maybe you should have done this in your own country before you came here.

This is the main conversation I have with people here now Why could some expats be destroying Ecuador,

I myself live like an Ecuadorian, being married to one. I respect the culture. I do not try to change things here. I am still here as a guest in a foreign country. Nothing more than that. It is me that has to adjust, which isn´t easy. We all have our daily struggles and don't agree with certain things over here.

Is this posting something to worry about if you are an Ecuadorian? Yes, if foreigners continue to buy into these houses, but honestly, the way the country is now, I think it will be very hard for these expats to sell. Maybe a schoolboy's error that they may see in time. But if you are thinking of becoming an expat here, think out of the box, don't follow the sheep. I hope this post explains why some expats could be destroying Ecuador. Some input on this would be great, as there are always two sides to a story. Housing complex in Portoviejo

If you have been to Portoviejo or have researched it online, then you will know that there is a hospital called the Solca, a big white building located outside the city between via Crucita and leading to the Paseo Lateral Road, that specialises in cancer and other conditions. The company that built this magnificent building has returned to Portoviejo to create a new housing complex, Fop Furoiani Obras Y Proyectos is the name and they are highly recommended for some of their previous work, designing one-off mansions to people's preference. With their head office being in Guayaquil, they have built many projects, some of which provide a jacuzzi and swimming pool out the back. here is their video of what they are aiming for along with a few images

The Portoviejo project is no different. They are integrating their style by building 3 types of housing to compete with local housing projects currently going at present.This is not for everyone, mainly for professional-based people. That is what they are aiming for, bringing a bit of luxury to the area and continuing to provide Ecuador with quality workmanship.

Following on from a post about why living in Portoviejo is a great place to live I can further back this up by illustrating the problems locals are now and have been facing lately in areas such as Crucita, San Alejo, and pretty much all of the coast, where expats are eager to reside. Unfortunately, most of the roads have recently been wiped out due to adverse weather conditions. On the beach front, some say it was El niño? But it has left some people's houses in tatters, and the big clean up is now beginning, with truck loads of rocks on their way to try to repair the main beach front roads.

Whatever direction you go, it's a short journey to the beach . For me, it's a case of what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

By purchasing a property in this new housing complex in Portoviejo, it will also guarantee you a resident visa, which so many look for these days if they are not going for the retirement stage yet. Simply invest, and once all is completed, the local attorney will have everything sorted for you.

English speaking Beach tour of Manabi
From the last post about an English speaking guide in Manabi, I have had numerous emails ranging from where I would suggest living in Manabi to a request for some kind of English-speaking beach tour of Manabi that could be completed over a few days or even turn it into a week's worth of traveling, stopping over night at each beach.

This is exactly what myself and Marlon are trying to achieve by showing you all of the lovely coastal areas that Manabi has to offer. You can decide for yourself. We don't need to sell it to you.

On this beach tour, which we are currently devising, you will have the opportunity to spend the day and night if desired, itinerary will consist of visiting potential property, walking along the beaches, and finding some areas of outstanding beauty for you to take pictures while soaking up that sea air. Stopping for a bite to eat, whether it is a light lunch and a beer or to taste what the coast has to offer.We will also arrange for you to ask questions of a few locals who will be happy to tell you about the area's history, what it has become, and what they believe it will be like in the future.

While doing all of this, if you wish to participate in any activities, such as boat trips to various islands, or even have a go at fishing, then this can be added to the list.

Every beach has its own uniqueness By the time you have finished your tour, you will have found your desired hot spot.

So the answer to the first question (where I would suggest living in Manabi?) Really, this all comes down to you. There are plenty of areas to choose from. Either join an existing expat community or search for your own private retreat. For myself, I opted to live in Portoviejo. Why? The main reason was that beach life seemed too hot for me. It was great going for a few days, but full time I may have struggled.

Although most people go for the beach as their first choice, some tend to change their mind through factors such as climate and basic amenities. Well, this is something I get asked a lot, and my answer is that I personally don´t know anyone who specialises in this field,

so I got talking with my friend tonight, who is Ecuadorian and has lived in Manabi all of his life, and who also speaks English. I have sat on the fence for nearly 6 years, just minding my own business and enjoying family life, until now, when I feel the knowledge and contacts I have obtained can finally be put to good use. Help others.

We plan to look after tourists,who wish to vacation in Manabi ,and ensure they have the best holiday that money can buy,whether that be a relaxing beach holiday, an action packed holiday,tour of Manabi or simply to party and enjoy themselves.

What can we do for you? An English-speaking guide in Manabi

For starters, we will pick you up from the airport and sort out reasonably priced accommodation to suit your needs. Depending on your arrival and journey times, the first night you will want to off load and get some shut eye fresh for the next day,

What would you like to do?

There are many options depending on the purpose of your visit, whether you are on holiday or looking to live here.

Some like to view all of the coastal areas, take photos, do a bit of shopping,and learn more about the history and culture,more of a tourist holiday.

Where is Ecuador?

No idea where Ecuador is? Location of Ecuador, Ecuador is in South America between Colombia and Peru being there neighbours north and south, with Brazil being further east,sitting on the equator line, which is what led to the country being named Ecuador yes i am stating the obvious, but not many people know where the location of Ecuador is?

Ecuador got its name in 1463 when the Inca Empire began, but prior to this, the land consisted of many indigenous Indian tribes who were at war with each other most of the time.

The Spanish conquered Ecuador in the 16th century and brought Spanish colonial rule to the land over the next couple of centuries.

Much of the indigenous tribes were literally wiped out due to illness, as the spanish brought over with them a mixture of small pox and measles.

The 18th century took its toll and Ecuador's hope for independence was looking slim as most of its cities were in total ruins, but after much blood shed over a long period of time, independence was achieved in 1830. The land was ruled over the next 140 years by military and various political groups.

Through it´s neighbours in Peru, Ecuador lost many territories conflicting with it´s neighbours in the early 1900´s, then also a border war in 1995 that wasn´t resolved until 1999.

There has been 7 presidents since 96, which shows sign of instability
Ecuador is split up into different areas, on the North west just under 1400km from Quito Ecuador´s capital city are the Galapagos islands, which attract a lot of tourism due to it´s wildlife and beautiful coast lines.
Quito is a very large city surrounded by mountains(Andes) and also volcanoes one being very active at present (Cotopaxi) the climate is cooler and high up can be difficult to adjust to the climate with the altitude. sierra region

Down the east you have the oriente,which backs on to the Amazon rain forest, eco lodges and cabins are a popular attraction for tourists who wish for some adventure or just to get out of the cities. Amaon region

The west consists of a lovely coastal area starting from Esmeraldas at the most northern point down past Santa Elena going through small fishing villages,some busy with tourism and others completely untouched Coastal region

Ecuador is quite a big country to explore ,so when visiting it is always good to have an idea on where it is you would like to be, If life on the coast appeals to you then you can do some research on the villages and cities below that Manabi has to offer

The sucre highlighted in yellow seems to be an increasingly popular place for foreign expats to retire or begin their quest for beach life paradise little fishing villages such as crucita and san clemente you will find many foreigners living there.

So I have been living here for over 5 years and it is safe to say I know my way around the city, who to see if you have a problem of any sort and where the nice areas are.

I joined an expat page on Facebook as it interested me to see how many people are living close to me. From browsing, I found that there are only a few expats living in Portoviejo, who I have never met, as most live on the beach nearby.

When I was asked where in Manabi I lived, Portoviejo seemed like a big shock to everyone, all with the same question of why?

Well, there are many reasons why I ended up living here rather than at the beach, and here they are.

Health San Clemente has nothing; maybe one doctor, but if you have a problem, you'll need to go to Portoviejo or even Manta for treatment. Portoviejo has many hospitals and clinics. The Solca specialises in cancer, along with other major illnesses. Many people come from all over the province for treatment here. Even the public hospitals, I feel, are at a decent standard with English-speaking doctors and just a general relief that you are in safe hands. There are trained specialists around the city.

My doctor is a perfect example of someone who speaks English, is very well educated and looks after you as if you were some sort of celebrity. Everyone will have a different experience with hospitals. I have seen a few gringos complain about public hospitals and opt for the private or clinics, which are scattered around the city. If you have children, there are some brilliant paediatric doctors around, so really you have it all here and everything is generally close.

Shops In Portoviejo, there really is a shop for everything. In the centre of town, there are many outlets for electronics,clothes,car parts, specialist services, etc., which you won´t find at the beach, so you will have to come here at some point. There are numerous department stores and two shopping malls, one on Paseo Shopping and the other on Avenue Manabi. The list goes on. If you need something, you will be able to get it in Portoviejo.

Food and Drink Coastal food is generally delicious, fresh fish, shrimp, etc.,and boasts a nice nightlife with beach front bars open all day and night, and in fairness, over the years there has been a nice variety of food, but again, Portoviejo being a small city has it all; restaurants, fast food, you name it, we have got it; Italian, Chinese,and typical Ecuadorian food., Ceviche and Encebollado have to be my favourite food here. Many outlets, but I normally stick to my local a few minutes from home. There are many bars around the city's avenue universitaria where it is mainly students having a beer with friends, but the main area is avenue Manabi leading to the airport where you can find some lovely bars that also do food and a mixture of night clubs or shall we say discoteque if you fancy a boogie or a karaoke night.

Services There are many services you will require over time, legal or seeking specialist people. I will start with mechanics, body repair and parts. Like most things, cars need parts, things go wrong and you need someone who you can trust to get the job done. Again, there are many mechanics here. Some are good, some are bad, some are cheap, some are also expensive. Luckily, my father-in-law introduced me to the good ones, so any issue I take the car there or he will come and get it. If you were at the beach, what would you do?

Parts for the car as i said previously, Portoviejo has a shop for anything, so you should be able to source the car parts you want. If you require a hand-made part or modification, there are many highly skilled people here who can perform some amazing tasks at affordable prices. Cough, cough. I couldn't say the same thing about the UK without having a bill over a grand.

Lawyers Keep it brief again, there are many about. Mine speaks English, did all my visas and even helped me get a visa for my wife when I went back to the UK for a holiday. No hiccups, everything has always run smooth. I will name drop Flori Zambrano if you want to mention my name simon the english man it´s up to you, but she is in my eyes the best very professional

Climate We all like the sun, or we wouldn´t be living here, but for me the beach gets too much for me. It is an English man s dream to live on the beach. Well, for most it is drinking cocktails watching the world go by,but I am fair-skinned, so instant red lobster, plenty of suncream, and plenty of after sun later on.

I love a good day at the beach with my family, but could I do it every single day? No, definitely not. Even my wife ( Ecuadorian) and son only like the odd day out there, so if moving to the area with children, really think about it before you commit to anything. Many a time I have seen people on these Facebook pages move after 2 weeks of being on the beach, because it is too hot. The rainy season can't be fun on the beach. From previous visits, the roads become destroyed and not to mention the houses, so be careful when buying a beach house.

Power and water Ecuador has improved a lot since I first came here, but you have more chance of the power going out living on the beach than you do in the city, so it is a case of how long will it take until you are back on? It can t be fun. Most properties on the coast don't have running water, so you will need to hire a (tanquero) man with a water truck to empty into your cisterna. How much water will you use on the beach? I don't know, but in the city you are looking at about $15 per month, which is regular running water. A tanquero can be anything from $15 to $30, which is not fun when you run out or the man has a shortage or is busy the day you need it. But in time, the beach villages should have running water when though? I have no idea.

Safe secure living Although living on the beach is nice, people take security for granted, with literally no security other than a bamboo kind of front gate. big mistake. Although locals are lovely people, the tourism side can attract the odd bad apple who stays over night and decides that they will take a chance of opening up your house. by all means, that is the worst case scenario, but looking at some of the houses, if it were to happen, you are not very safe. .

Schools for your kids This is only relevant if you have children, but Portoviejo has a wide range of schools to choose from, from public to private, with varying prices.

Things to do Living on the beach I feel you are very limited to what you can do, so if you want a change you will need to take a bus or drive, Portoviejo has many activities/places to go, like the local parks,swimming pools, cinemas, or shopping. You won t get bored, but the sun plays a big factor in what you can do..

Housing and accessibility For housing, there are more and more projects, gated communities being built here in Portoviejo at reasonable prices, which will gain you profit in the long run. Beach houses in San Clemente and San Jacinto are way overpriced, and an Ecuadorian will never pay those prices. Portoviejo is an up and coming city. Plans to develop the airport into a mini Dubai are on the agenda, funded by a Spaniard.

Accessibility really means living here in Portoviejo. You can get to any destination you want. There is a bus station that fires out buses to every area in Ecuador; Quito, Esmeraldas, Guayaquil, Cuenca, and all the small surrounding villages and cities.

You have a choice of which beach to go to: Manta Crucita or San Clemente leading to Canoa, or you can head the other direction down the route del Sol, Puerto Cayo, etc.

Don´t get stuck in a rut. Generally, living here, everywhere is easy to get to, which is why, without being bias, Portoviejo is everything I need in my life..

So I hope this clarifies a few things about why I don t follow the crowd and live in those coastal villages. Paradise is where you feel happy, not just because there is a large community of expats at the beach telling you to move there. English speaking guide? if so check out my guide post

Hola everyone! I've noticed a recurring theme in the questions landing in my inbox lately: many of you are contemplating the big leap to Ecuador but are still figuring out what you're truly looking for. For all you Ecuador expat newbies out there, I wanted to touch upon some key initial considerations. Think of this as a brief overview; I'll be diving deeper into each of these points in future posts to give you a comprehensive understanding.

One of the most crucial pieces of advice for any future expat is to visit Ecuador first. Take the time to explore different regions and truly understand what kind of lifestyle and environment suits you best. Are you dreaming of a hot climate or preferring the cooler air of the mountains? Is it the buzz of city life or the laid-back vibe of the beach life that calls to you? Once you have a clearer picture, it's time to do your homework. You'll find expats scattered throughout the country, from the heights of Quito to the colonial charm of Cuenca, and a good number of us enjoying the Ecuadorian coast.

Personally, I've found my sweet spot in the Manabí province, specifically in the city of Portoviejo. It offers a great balance for me, providing everything I need while also being a short drive away from fantastic beaches like Manta, Crucita, and San Clemente.

When it comes to property – whether you're looking to rent or buy – prices can vary significantly depending on the location. However, the general advice I give most people is to rent first before committing to a purchase. This allows you to truly experience an area before making a long-term investment. A useful resource for getting an idea of average house prices and rental properties across Ecuador is the website www.olx.com.ec. It's worth browsing to get a feel for the market in different regions.

Now, this is a point I feel strongly about: be aware that sometimes, the biggest financial pitfalls for new expats can come from other expats. Unfortunately, there are individuals who prey on newcomers, inflating prices for rental properties and land. They might paint a picture of paradise and then charge significantly more than what a local Ecuadorian would pay. Remember that the average basic Ecuadorian wage is around $370 per month. While there's nothing wrong with someone running a business, it's crucial to do your own research and not solely rely on the word of another expat. Introduce yourself to locals, gather information from various sources, and make informed decisions. Thankfully, alongside these opportunists, there are many genuinely kind and helpful people here.

The next fundamental question to ask yourself is: what kind of expat are you going to be? Are you retired with a comfortable financial situation, or are you looking to make a living in Ecuador? This is a crucial distinction that often gets overlooked, as many assume all expats are retirees. I, for one, am not retired, and my daily life and considerations are very different from someone who has come here solely to relax and enjoy their retirement.

If you fall into the non-retired expat category, there are several key factors to consider. Do you have a profession you can utilize here, or are you thinking of starting a business or finding a job to get by? If you have a profession, you might find work, but be prepared for a lower salary than you were accustomed to back home.

Creating a business in Ecuador can be particularly challenging. It requires a deep understanding of the local culture and thorough market research. What works successfully in your home country might not translate well here. Trust me on this – I've tried bringing numerous business ideas from England to Ecuador, and most have not succeeded.

Here's a crucial insight into the Ecuadorian market: while platforms like OLX and Mercado Libre are used for online listings, Ecuadorians generally prefer physical shops over online purchasing due to a significant lack of trust stemming from past and present scams. For example, a business Facebook page might garner many likes, but actual sales are often minimal without a physical presence.

Pricing is another area where you'll need to adjust your expectations. If you're selling something for $80, it's common to receive offers in the $40-$50 range. Don't be offended; this is a standard practice. You'll rarely get your initial asking price unless you stand firm.

Living in Ecuador requires an open mind and patience. The concept of "Mañana Mañana" (tomorrow, tomorrow) is a common expat frustration. Things often don't happen as quickly as you might be used to. While I still have my moments of muttered frustration, it's part of the experience.

Be prepared to encounter poverty. It's a reality here and might be outside your comfort zone. Try to navigate it with sensitivity. Remember that what seems cheap to you can be expensive for many locals, so perhaps keep your incredible deal on that $200k house to yourself.

Blending in is generally a good strategy. Try to dress modestly and avoid displaying expensive jewelry. While crime exists everywhere, you don't want to make yourself an obvious target.

Regarding animals, it's important to understand that not all dogs you see are pets. Many are street dogs, often unwanted and struggling to survive. It can be heartbreaking to witness. While your instinct might be to help, the scale of the issue can feel overwhelming.

When it comes to money, it's wise to avoid using large denominations like $50 and $100 bills for everyday purchases. Stick to smaller notes ($5s and $10s) and even change when out and about. Many smaller businesses won't be able to break large bills. If you're in a bind, petrol stations are usually a good place to get change.

Cars are a significant consideration. Some expats prefer public transport, but personally, I rely on my own vehicle. However, car prices here are generally very high, and it can be difficult to reconcile paying a premium for a car that would be much cheaper back home. Think long and hard before making a purchase. My personal advice on buying cars in Ecuador: steer clear of big, new, expensive vehicles. Why? Driving a brand-new BMW in a place like Manabí can attract unwanted attention and even envy, potentially leading to your car being damaged or stolen. Again, blending in is key. You don't need to buy a complete wreck, but adjusting your expectations and opting for something more modest is advisable. My turbo car days are definitely behind me here!

My aim is simply to open your eyes and help you be prepared for the realities of expat life in Ecuador. Hi guys, I hope all is well. As you know, I like to give you the best honest truth about Ecuador; what is good, what is not, and what to stay away from. Living here in Manabi for over 5 years has taught me a lot about how people operate and whom to contact if you need help in a certain field. Property is what drives a person who is thinking of living here. Do you buy a house, apartment, or land to develop at an affordable price? The answer to this is yes. Whatever you are considering, be sure to shop around, Newly developed gated communities are great, as are apartments,which come in at various prices from 35k to 200k, but sometimes we want our own little paradise,a little get away or full-time residence. To do this, you need to search for a suitable area and decide what you want as a home.

Living on the coast has many benefits; sun,sea, sand and that chilled out lifestyle you need in your life. Most of the beaches here are still in development mode, but are coming along nicely and attract many tourists year in and year out. Crucita and San Clemente are my 2 favorite hot spots; nice friendly people and not too far from the cities of Manta and Portoviejo. Buying land on the beach can become expensive, but only if you use the wrong people. Stay clear of real estate brokers. Without being offensive or rude, let's just say I was close to being conned by an actual gringo. Yes, you heard that right, greedy people will do anything to suck you in attitude,and you end up paying an extortionate price. Stick to a local. They know best, after all, it is their country. You can find many advertisements in the newspapers and internet promoting Terrano,but the gold is finding a person who doesn't use these kinds of advertisements. Someone who has owned and still lives on the land for many years and has decided to finally share a piece of his paradise.

Well, I have found that man. I went to view some land for my brother-in-law the other day, and came across a gem selling land from as little as $30 per m2 up to $70. Bear in mind that this can only increase in value over the years. The views are amazing, looking left to la loma,right heading down to la boca and San Clemente, and looking straight at the beach in front.

The land is fully safe and secure and the entrance is operated with an electric gate for added security. Rest assured that this area is nice and peaceful and out of the way of any tourists. There are many ideas you could consider housing-wise; wooden, mixed, or cement.

Making money in Ecuador this can be very very difficult, the language barrier is the first hurdle you may have to cross, if you are thinking about moving to ecuador, but do not speak a word of spanish, then i am afraid you will struggle to find work and also communicate,

A profession of some kind such as a doctor,lawyer,teacher construction will make life easier for you and you will also earn decent money in the process

But for us average joes who are lost for ideas and are desperate to make a living here in Ecuador or face that flight back home, you need to understand the wage structures and the cost of living, and also have an open mind about life, leaving your comfort zone,

Now you can pretty much do what you want over here, set up a business/service etc, providing your visa has been accepted. Most Ecuadorians shall we say the average and under earn 250 dollars per month, yes that is not a lot at all compared to what we are used to back home, but life throws you a bone over here, as the cost of living is remarkably cheap for renting,bills and of course food, Now i am not saying to just take any old job and be grateful for what you have that's crazy, but what i am saying is think, have a plan, what can you do here?

For example to teach English you could complete a Tefl course and go from there working in the schools, you could teach privately, like many do, i even had a few students who i taught the basics of English at my house, which if i stuck at it maybe would of turned out to be a winner,but i am not a teacher, never was in England so why would i be in Ecuador

If you already have money buying a house to rent out is always an option, while living in your own, it would certainly cover the bills etc,

But i have to admit without a profession,business or money it is very hard to make money over here, which is why you don't make money over here "yes you read correct" you don't earn your money in Ecuador, what you do is make money online in your home country, selling information and products to your people,

Anyone can do this, and what you will find from speaking to most expats is that they do this aswell,

SUMMARY: An introduction to the last great beachfront real estate bargain in Latin America: Ecuador.

Think the phrase "cheap beachfront property" is a thing of the past?

If you paid $40,000 for your beach house, how long ago did you buy it? In the US, it would have had to have been 30 years or so ago, in Puerto Rico, over 15 years ago, in Costa Rica, over ten years ago.

But we have another chance. Even now in 2008, there is a place a few hours by plane from Miami, with Hawaii-like weather, friendly locals, outstanding beaches, and where foreigners are not only welcome to buy, but encouraged.

The place is Ecuador. How it has slipped through the cracks this long is amazing.

So the first step towards your $40,000 beach house is to understand where you can find one. Not in the US (obviously), nor in Costa Rica or Panama, but in Ecuador.

The second step is to define exactly the type of property you would like (condo, plot of land, house) and your budget.

The third step is to go to kayak.com and book your flight to Ecuador. From Miami, New York and LA roundtrip flights can be had starting around $400.

The fourth step would be to do some preliminary research on the net. Remember that any listings you may find in English are probably priced for foreigners, sometimes at double or triple the price you could find locally. There are great places online to find listings, but that is covered more thoroughly in the report mentioned at the end of this article.

The fifth step would be to go to Ecuador. Give yourself as much time as possible in Ecuador. A few months are ideal. Make some local friends, get acclimated to the culture and decide if Ecuador is right for you. Easy ways to make local friends would be to go to the local churches, take Spanish lessons, or join local clubs with a similar interest to your own.

Then with a few local allies on your side, ask them to recommend a few trustworthy real estate agents and local lawyers.

The sixth step is to start your house hunt. Go to the coast, decide where you want to live and walk the streets yourself looking for phone numbers spray painted on the sides of buildings indicating they are for sale. Have a local friend help you make contact (so they don't hike the prices up on you when they hear your accent.)

The seventh step would be to have your lawyer check out the papers of the properties that interest you, making sure they are in order. If the papers are in legal order, you make a bid similar to the US, but in Ecuador you will probably be dealing directly with the owner. Locals prefer to sell their houses themselves instead of through agents.

If the bid is accepted, you sign a sales contract similar to those in the US, and the closing of the sale takes only a few weeks in Ecuador. Closing costs and fees are only a fraction of those in the States.

Beachfront land plots in the $20,000 dollar range are still available. Castles on seafront cliffs are available for around $150,000 and attractive little seaside houses can sell for as little as $40,000, but only until the place gets discovered.

It get’s it’s name Panama from it being the first place that the Ecuadorians distributed their hats to Isthmus of Panama and in 1834 the name Panama hats was born before they got distributed throughout Asia USA and now all of Europe
The straw in Panama hats comes from the plaited leaves of the Carludovica Palmata or "paja toquilla", a type of palm indigenous to Ecuador.

Panama hats are light-colored, lightweight, and breathable, and often worn as accessories to summer-weight suits, such as those made of linen or silk. Beginning around the turn of the 20th century, panamas began to be associated with the seaside and tropical locales

Ecuador Houses and instant residence for manabi province
As mentioned previously i recommend buying a house in a gated community unless you are prepared to buy land and get a house built to your requirements if you are considering moving to Ecuador and are after residence these houses can give you instant residence for a single person or family etc ie 25 grand is the minum requirement from the Ecuadorian government,investing into the country plenty of opportunity here to do this!
For example I have came across this project in Portoviejo in Manabi called San Gregorio located a few minutes away from the San Gregorio university direct commuting route to manta and of course Portoviejo itself. It is an up and coming project, will be sporting a swimming pool for residents park for children and also sports facilities ,This project seems to be quite a popular company originally based in Guayaquil and have completed many projects over the years, first one in manabi i think!

Ecuador Cuisine Guinea Pig also known as cuy!

Guinea pigs!! Yes, Guinea pigs! The ones that you have as family pets aren’t treated as the cuddly companions you have at home; instead, in the Andean mountains of Ecuador,they’re bred, boiled, and deep-fried for dinner.

Guinea pig, known as Cuy in South America, is a local delicacy that’s unique to the highlands of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Cuy is most often eaten for special occasions, a tradition that dates back hundreds of years to the Incan empire.
Cuy is not only used for food. They warm the house, keep the rats away, and are used for medicinal purposes. Local herbal doctors use cuy in their healing rituals. In one ceremony, a shaman will rub the sick person in question with a black cuy for about 15 to 30 minutes, or until the guinea pig suffocates. He then can diagnose the patient’s illness by cutting the animal in half and interpreting the malady according to the animal's spread out innards.

It is also believed that cuy carries positive energy when eaten.

I think I'll give it a try the next time I'm up there, promise, and will report back on the taste, but I heard it tastes like chicken.

Cuy is prepared differently across the highlands. In places like Chaltura, they deep-fry it multiple times at different temperatures.

the chef throws a de-furred, cuy carcass into a pan of sizzling hot oil. The lifeless meat is slinked into a deceptively hot vat of placid oil. Something i have never seen yet, but Once sufficiently crispy, the cuy is served starfished on a plate. Head, teeth claws the lot! ha my friends in England will be shocked also a friend of mine keeps loads as pets but shhh they might not read this, anyhow what are your views about this strange i know, but suppose if there is nowt in the house and you have a fat guinea pig looking at ya then what the hell ha ha thanks for reading one last picture still can´t believe it ha!!!

Ecuador Cuisine Encebollado fish soup hangover cure

Encebollado is a great remedy for hangovers. Its works because the fish oil helps get rid of the free radicals that result from the breakdown of alcohol in the body. Restaurant owners in Ecuador often sell the soup in the morning for this reason, so if you get up early you will see a few sore heads ha ha although it is versatile enough to work for lunch and dinner, too.

Encebollado has to be my favourite dish out here i could live off the stuff, it is the national dish of Ecuador, where it originated. not to hard to make, encebollado has only four primary ingredients: fish, tomatoes, onions and yuca. The soup is both pungent and spicy in flavor.

The base of encebollado is a mix of tomatoes and onions, and the Spanish word encebollado is roughly translated as "onion fish soup." This mix, known as sofrito, also calls for spices common to the Ecuadorian region, such as cumin, chili and cilantro. Salt also is included. In some versions, the cook also adds some fresh chili peppers.

Albacora, or tuna, is the traditional encebollado fish. One reason for this is that tuna is so plentiful in the waters near Ecuador. With tuna, a common fish, as the primary protein, encebollado is a relatively inexpensive soup.

In addition to the sofrito and tuna, encebollado recipes include yuca. Yuca is a root vegetable found in much of South America. A highly coarse and fibrous plant, yuca provides the starch for the soup and is a major source of carbohydrates.

To make this simple fish soup, one first prepares the base. This requires frying the tomatoes, onions and spices in some oil. Only medium heat is required during this step.

After you have done the base, add water to it and boil the tuna for about 15 minutes until it is cooked all the way through. then add the cilantro to the resultant fish broth during this process. Then the tuna is taken out and drained, and the yuca is boiled in the fish broth until the roots are tender but firm. After the yuca roots are cooked, they are removed from the broth so that their coarse strings can be removed and the roots chopped. Adding the yuca and tuna back to the broth with some salt completes the main part of the fish soup.

You can also add pickled onions and tomato to the batch. Salsa sometimes is used in addition to or in place of these toppings. Another option is topping the soup with some additional chili pepper slices. you can sprinkle the dish with a little lime juice, and finally add chifles to the mix tastes lush! give it a go tell me what you think thanks for looking!

Follow on from shrimp ceviche here is the recipe for fish ceviche remember these are merely guidelines as everyone cooks it different but you get the idea, i have rice and chifles with mine chifles are like crisps that you crush and mix in your finished dish should look a bit like this

On to how to make fish ceviche
Ingredients:

2lb of white fish fillets (corvina, halibut, sea bass, tilapia, sole), cut into small square pieces
2 red onions diced very finely
4 tomatoes diced very finely
2 bell peppers, assorted colors, chopped very finely
20 limes, separated into about 10 limes to cook the fish and 10 limes for the ceviche marinade
1 bunch of cilantro (also known as coriander) chopped as finely as possible
Salt and sunflower oil

Preparation:

    Place the raw fish pieces in a glass dish and cover it with salt and lime juice from about 10-12 limes, the fish should be completely covered by lime juice.
    Cover the dish with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator, let the fish marinate or cook itself in the lime juice for at least 4 hours.
    Mix the onions, tomatoes, peppers, and cilantro with the juice from the remaining limes and let marinate for about an hour.
    Once the fish is “cooked” in the lime juices rinse it well and mix it with the vegetable marinade, add salt and sunflower oil to taste.
    Serve with chifles. and don´t forget the rice for more recipes might i suggest using the

Ecuador Cuisine Shrimp Ceviche

When you come to Ecuador there are many cuisines to try out in this post we will concentrate on ceviche made with shrimp, when i first came here i was a bit wiery on trying out all these new foods as there is allot of lime used in these foods thought maybe bad stomach especially from using fish and shrimp etc, i did try a ceviche, but really hated it, but 2 years on i love it and have it most sundays as it is a tradition over here on the coast ,it must of just been the wrong place that i had it, Any how my wifes mother knocks up some great food ceviche being one of her dishes,
Here is a basic recipe on how to make shrimp ceviche maybe not exactly the same as my mother in laws but just a guidline you will need

    2 pounds raw shrimp, deveined, and shelled

    4 limes

    1 lemon

    1/2 medium onion, chopped fine

    3 tomatoes, chopped

    1 jalapeno, chopped, don't de-seed

    heavy handful of chopped cilantro

    10 oz. ketchup

    salt to taste

Directions

Boil water then turn it off and put your shrimp in the pot for only one minute (they should not be completely cooked!) and remove from water to a strainer.

Put shrimp and chopped onion in a medium/large bowl and squeeze the juice of limes and lemon over the top. Salt a bit, stir, and cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hour. (It's important that you put onion in with shrimp in this step - if you wait and add it later it won't be the same - the onion "cooks" with the shrimp in the citrus juice.)

Remove from fridge (that's obvious, right?), stir, and add your chopped tomatoes, jalapeno, cilantro, ketchup, and a bit more salt to taste also have some rice made up to mix in and we use chiflets like crisps but made from plantain. should look something like this

Jobs a good en not sure how many people this will feed but im guessing 4 plus, next i will talk about ceviche with fish also a dish called encebollado which is by far my favourite i could just eat that allday. give it a go see what you think thanks for looking!
