This is my mantra. I'm a dedicated herb gardener and crafter, and many of my asked for gifts are herb related. If you don't have an herb garden started yet, any time of year is a good time to begin. Either indoors or outdoors will do. My blog, <a href="http://theherbgardener.blogspot.com/"target="_blank">The Herb Gardener will help you.

Once you have some herbs going, you can use the leaves, flower and seeds to make great, one-of-a-kind gifts for friends and family.
What do you think of homemade herb blends like <a href="http://theherbgardener.blogspot.com/2008/04/make-your-own-bouquet-garni.html"target="_blank">bouquet garni, <a href="http://theherbgardener.blogspot.com/2008/01/make-your-own-herbes-de-provence.html"target="_blank">herbs de Provence, or <a href="http://theherbgardener.blogspot.com/2008/06/make-your-own-old-bay-seasoning-type.html"target="_blank">Old Bay Seasoning. How about decorative seed packets for friends, wrapped with fabric and sporting their own computer generated planting sticks. If you are intrigued, visit some of my blogs to learn how to turn your herbs into gifts, or buy herbs to make into gifts.

Seasons Greetings
Sara
Read my feed.

Keep Your Pets Safe From Toxic Plants

In spring your pets love to be out of doors as much as you do. It's important to keep them safe from other animals, but sometimes even the plants on your property can present a threat.

Prepare your yard for a pet-safe summer by understanding the types of plants that can sicken or kill your pet. Did you know that cocoa mulch can pose many of the toxicity problems to pets as chocolate does, or that the leaves and stems of tomatos are toxic if ingested?

Follow the link and compare the plants on the list to those growing in your yard. Sometimes the unexpected can create problems, so be forearmed. Even animals that have never shown an interest in eating plants before may get curious or bored and start munching. Most of the plants listed are also toxic to children, so take a moment to check it out.

If you are planning on undating your landscaping this season, use the list as a guide to building a safer environment for your family. . . two legged and four legged: <a href="http://petencyclopedia.blogspot.com/2008/04/common-plants-that-are-toxic-to-your.html"target="_blank">Common Plants That Are Toxic to Your Pets
Read my feed.

Ways to Steer Clear of Heat Stress and Other Sun Related Problems

Summer's on the way, you can feel it in the air, but before you head out to the park, the marina, or the garden, protect yourself from the effects of the sun and high temperatures.

The following tips will make your time outdoors safer and more fun:

1. Stay Hydrated
One of the best things you can do for your body is to drink plenty of water. To mix it up a bit, include a few non-carbonated and nonalcoholic beverages, sports drinks, and fresh fruits.

2. Stay in the Shade

Whenever possible, stay out of direct sunlight. The damaging effects of sun exposure are well documented. Whether you are planning a trip to the beach, a day in the park, or an outdoor family reunion, use umbrellas, pop-up shelters, shade trees, and the shady side of walls for protection.

3. Stay Inside During the Hottest Part of the Day

Afternoon sun can be brutal. If you are planning a walk or short outing, schedule it for the morning hours.

4. Break up Your Outdoor Activity

If you are on vacation, or just trying to catch up on yard work, be sure to combine outdoor activities with indoor rest periods. Don't make yourself sick by trying to do everything in one day. The great thing about the outdoors is that it will be there tomorrow.

5. Make Wearing Sunscreen a Habit This Summer

Get in the habit of applying sunscreen in the morning, at lunch, and again in the afternoon. Perspiration can leave you unprotected, so stock up, and use your sunscreen liberally, particularly on children and the elderly. Even days that appear overcast can be a hazard if you are around reflective surfaces like sand and water.

6. Pay Attention to the Weather Reports When Temperatures Soar

Local news broadcasts will warn you of potentially harmful weather conditions like broiling temperatures, high pollen counts, potential thunderstorms, and UV and smog alerts. Avoid nasty surprises by checking the facts before you step out the door.

7. Wear Head Coverings to Beat the Heat

Head coverings that are large enough to shade the back of your neck are preferred, although anything is better than nothing.

8. Limit Manual Labor in Hot Weather

Physical exertion when temperatures are high, humidity levels soar, or air-quality is a problem takes a toll on your body. Professionals who work outdoors pay attention to safe weather practices; so should you.

9. Wear Light Colors to Stay Cool

Your mother was right; light colors reflect light and heat away from you, keeping you cooler and more comfortable than your buddy who's wearing his black T-shirt and jeans.

10. Lose the Liquor. When it Gets Hot, Alcohol Isn't Your Friend

Just because it's wet, doesn't mean it will hydrate you. Alcohol dehydrates your body, and in hot weather that is the last thing you want . . .uh, need.

11. Wear the Right Sunglasses

Sunglasses will protect your eyes when you are outdoors, but it's better to use varieties with UV filtering. Using non-UV filtering sunglasses in bright light conditions can harm your eyes and lead to cataracts in later life. Skimp on something else. When it comes to sunglasses, go for the extra protection.

12. Don't Forget Your Feet

Your feet need protection too, so don't forget the sunscreen. Always have appropriate shoes with you when participating in outdoor activities. Sun baked surfaces can be hot enough to cook an egg. Don't get an unexpected hot foot by being unprepared.

Pay attention to the signs of sun exposure. If you find yourself feeling disoriented, lightheaded, or you stop sweating, get out of the sun immediately and contact emergency medical services.
There are few things better than a fun day in the sun. Be sure everyone makes it home safe by using sun-safe practices.

Read my feed.

Throw Some Creativity Into Your Spring Cleaning – Make Your Own Shelf Liners

If spring-cleaning fever is upon you, try a creative approach to cleanup this year. When the weather begins to get nice out, I watch for cardinals in the yard, particularly the females.

It's the time of year when I start wanting to turn my attentions to my nest too, so I feel a kinship with her. If you want to relieve the monotony of cleaning light fixtures and cabinets, try this creative trick for beautifying your nest.

Make Fabric Shelf Liners With Flair

Replace your drawer and shelf liners. I've moved away from paper and use fabric now. Your local fabric store has inexpensive cotton fabric in many prints and colors that will brighten up your kitchen and make you feel great every time you open a drawer.

No Sew Shelf Liners

Even if you are not a sewer (that's someone who sews), you can buy pinking shears and go to town. (Pinking shears are special scissors that cut fabric in a series of peaks and valleys that inhibit raveling.)

If you do sew, try using a serger. If you watch the sales, they can be relatively inexpensive, and you can use them easily once you have learned the knack of threading them.

Making Shelf Liner Templates

Use a tape measure to make a template out of a discarded sheet or length of butcher paper. Make one template for each shelf and drawer size you want to line. Allow an extra half inch on all sides if you are serging or hemming. (Tape sheets of butcher paper together if you have to.)

Stabilize Your Fabric

Once you have a template, buy your fabric and enough heavyweight iron-on adhesive stabilizer to line all of the fabric. The stabilizer will be available on a bolt, like fabric, or on a roll. It's sticky on one side and will make a permanent bond when attached to the wrong side of the fabric. Once in place, the fabric will be stiff, permanently.

Iron the stabilizer to the fabric before you cut it, sticky side facing the back-side of the fabric, and always cut the stabilizer a little smaller than the fabric to avoid making a mess. Read the stabilizer directions before you start to iron. Temperature requirements vary, and some stabilizers like steam while others don't. If you get it wrong, the stabilizer won't stick. (This sounds harder than it is.)

Using your templates, cut the lengths of fabric you need. If you are pinking the edges, this will be the last step. If you are serging or hemming the edges, proceed to finish each liner on your machine of choice. Once complete, your liners can be washed in the washing machine on the gentle cycle and will last for years.

You can mix it up, buying coordinating fabrics and alternating them. You can also use a textured fabric like burlap, for say . . . a pot or utility drawer. Just be sure to wash the burlap before cutting it. Lining the shelves in the linen closet can be fun too. Try some romantic prints in heavier, home decorator fabrics.

The job will probably take you a weekend afternoon once you have your materials together. It's one small grace note that you can create yourself inexpensively, and it will make you feel as though your house is clean and well cared for from the inside out. It's a bit like buying lacy unmentionables –for your home. Others probably won't see your work, but you'll know it's there.

This is also a good way to start learning to use fabric, learning to serge, or polishing up your sewing skills. It may even give you the enthusiasm to move on to some of the big projects.

Special Notes on Sergers:

Sergers can be handy tools if you like to mix things up with different tablecloths, napkins, placemats, pillows, or curtains. They can cut and finish edges in a flash, and you can make a complete change of décor for your dining room in a couple of hours.

They've gotten a bad reputation for being difficult to thread, or expensive for the 'easy to use' brands. Sergers are easy, very easy to sew with. That's the beauty of them. They can create a finished edge without hemming or cutting, and they are fast! The problem is that they can be hard to thread.

Tips For Threading Sergers

Sergers will typically have four threads working in concert to create an enclosed web that keeps fabric edges from raveling. The threads have to be wound through the machine precisely, and it can sometimes be a tight fit for large or arthritic fingers. The good news is that there are inexpensive third party tools that can help, and once you know the drill with your serger, threading it isn't that big a deal.

Once you have the knack, make yourself a diagram, even if the machine includes its own. Keep your diagram with the machine for next time. If there is a particular spot you have trouble identifying, mark it with a small dot of nail polish so you'll have an easier time finding it next time.
Read my feed.

Travel Insurance

Going on vacation, or even a weekend holiday, can be the high point of your whole year. Before you pick up and go, however, consider the best way to keep you and your family safe.

Travel insurance is often included in a travel package, but the one-size-fits-all options might not be best for you. When reviewing travel insurance, there are some important things to consider.

Take a moment to look at my article to see if it might be more economical and better for you to invest in individual travel insurance. A little planning might save you money, avoid confusion should something happen while you're on the road, and give you the type of coverage that will be the custom fit you really need: Basics of Travel Insurance
Read my feed.

New Ideas for Celebrating Easter at Your House

Easter is a good time for children. Decorating eggs, looking for Easter baskets, Easter egg hunts, picnics, bunnies, and baby chicks all contribute to great childhood memories. Beyond the obvious religious significance, bounty, promise, and renewal are the things I think of most when I remember Easter.

Easter and the Environment

I believe Easter offers the most eco-centric opportunity of all the major holidays, and embracing that aspect of Easter at your house can give you a great start on teaching your children the value of recycling, respecting the earth, and honoring the changing seasons. Here's how:

Getting a Start on Spring – Starting a Garden From Seed

Children are naturals in the garden. This spring why not start an herb or vegetable garden with children in mind. Vegetables like lettuce, radishes, and snow peas germinate quickly and put on an impressive early show. You can start seeds between two sheets of damp paper towel placed on a tray or plastic wrapped cookie sheet. Keep the tray in a sunny spot, uniformly moist, until roots appear. (Have your children spritz them once or twice daily with a spray bottle.)

Once the seeds germinate, move them to peat pots, or better, pots that you've made from newsprint and filled with potting mix (Go here for a quick video on making your own paper starter pots). Move them to your garden or an outdoor pot once all threat of frost has passed and overnight temperatures have warmed into the 50s or higher. The back of the seed packet will give you good information on when and how to plant your vegetables outdoors. Watching seeds sprout roots and leaves is an eye opener for children and can engender a lifelong love of plants.

One sure winner is to introduce a few herbs into your garden project. Peppermint, lemon thyme, lavender, and chocolate geraniums are a delight to children who are fascinated by the strong fragrances that they can relate to things they're already familiar with. Once they have an interest in their plant collection, they will be much more aware of weather, the seasons, soil, and nature in general. Give them a gift this Easter by broadening their interests.

Beginning a Recycling Plan for Glass, Aluminum, Plastic and Paper

Recycling isn't new, but committed recycling isn't the norm. Help your children learn lessons that will inspire a generation to respect the earth and reduce landfills across the country.

If you don't recycle aluminum, glass, and paper, start a household program that will make recycling easier. Set up a recycling station in your kitchen. This may be as simple as a basket next to the garbage. Instead of tossing packaging, show your children how to check for the recycling symbol, and be diligent about reinforcing the suggestion that they always check before they toss. If you regularly us an item with packaging that can't be recycled, consider contacting the manufacturer and suggesting more eco-friendly manufacturing practices.

Reusing and Conserving

The habit of reusing and conserving can be hard to learn, but is easy to maintain once it's a part of your routine. Instead of buying paper for wrapping gifts, use fabric. Cut lengths of fabric with pinking shears and reuse these fabric wraps for family gifts. The familiar fabric will become a family tradition and you will be teaching a valuable lesson about personalizing your eco-friendly habits.

Remind your children to turn out lights when they leave a room. If they are careless with running water from the tap, put flow restrictors on the faucets, particularly on the sink(s) where they brush their teeth. With each measure that you add to their routine, explain why conservation is important.

Take cotton bags to the grocery store instead of using disposable bags. Packages of plain cotton bags aren't expensive and will help curb the environmental disaster of plastic bags in landfill. Enlist your children to carry the empty bags to the store. To make it more fun, have them personalize the bags with their handprints, names, and artwork.

You can show your children how to look at their possessions in a new way if you start recycling some of their clothing. Make small projects out of their castoffs. Although these items may be useful discards, making other objects, like small quilts, wall hangings, placemats, coasters, or potholders out of some of them will make a forceful impression. It may get them to start looking at their belongings and "stuff" in a new way. It will also help build memories (maybe even create some family heirlooms). There are hundreds of no-sew projects that will get you on the road to making memories and teaching valuable lessons. Check no-sew projects at Suite 101 for more information.

Recognizing Nature is the First Step to Respecting Nature

These are just a few suggestions. The more you reinforce the fact that there are things you can do every day to help the environment, the more likely it is that some of the lessons will stick.

One of the most powerful steps for good that you can take is in getting your children to respect nature. Bird watching, keeping pets (an aquarium is a great teacher), camping, and nature walks are all activities that place a focus on the importance of nature in life, and the emerging role of caretaker that new generations must assume if our planet is to thrive.

Easter is a celebration of nature. Make sure that you take advantage of the opportunity that Easter provides to teach your children to have the respect for nature that will help us all in the years to come. This year when you bury eggs in the yard, tell you kids that they'll be planting a vegetable patch or herb garden this year. When you serve Easter dinner, have your recycle station set up and show your children how to recognize, rinse, and segregate recyclables. Go through old clothes on Easter Sunday and pull out some items that will make good future-project material.

Sit down with your family this holiday and show them how they can help protect the Earth, on Easter and every day after that.

Read my feed.

Candle Making Tips and Tricks

Making your own candles can be rewarding and less expensive than buying them retail. Homemade candles can also be customized to fit your decor or aromatherapy requirements. Some waxes can even be melted in your microwave, making the process simpler than you ever imagined.

Wax Considerations

Paraffin
The least expensive and most widely available wax is paraffin. Paraffin is a petroleum by product (a hydrocarbon mixture), and considered by some to be a poor environmental choice. Because it is so easy to use and relatively cheap, you might want to consider trying it, or using paraffin in combination with another type of wax. Paraffin/vegetable blends are a good choice because they are economical, easy to use, and create a creamy, professional looking product.

Gel Medium
Gel is one of the newer candle making mediums. It uses a combination of polymers mixed with mineral oil for a rubbery texture that will burn longer than paraffin. Do not use gel in combination with other types of wax.

Soy Wax
Soy wax is an organic product derived from soybeans. It is a favorite because it cleans up easily and can be found at most candle making outlets. It has the advantage of burning cooler and producing less soot than paraffin. It is considered a more environmentally friendly wax than paraffin, and it can also be melted in your microwave.

Beeswax
Beeswax is the king of candle waxes. It is all natural, has a wonderful aroma, and is great to work with. It is also the most expensive choice of the three. Beeswax is available in bleached (white), and natural varieties. The natural is gold in color. Beeswax is also available in grades. The finer grades are usually sold for applications other than candle making, like the manufacture of cosmetics.

Wicks

Although you can find instructions on using twine and yarn as wicks, for the beginner, it's safest to purchase prepared wicks.

Wicks for Containers
Pre-packaged wicks will give you instructions on where and how to use them. The density and consistency of the wax you've selected will have an impact on the wick you should choose, and prepackaged wicks with bases and zinc cores are often the wisest choice. These wicks will remain rigid, have a base for proper placement, and have a published ROC (rate of consumption).

Candle Dye

Outlets that sell wax and wicks will also sell fragrance and dyes. Although I use aromatherapy grade essential oils in my candles, I purchase prepared candle dyes, creating deeper and richer hues by adding a drop of black to the prepared color mixtures.

For More Information See:

Candle Making Basics
Make an Easy Lavender Aromatherapy Candle
Read my feed.

Is Vday D-day?

If you feel that you have to perform on Valentine's Day, but your heart isn't in it, the process of doing something nice may get you into the mood. You never know until you try.

One way to minimize your sense of resentment is by doing something you both like. If you are a sports fan, make a spread that will make that sporting event a nice experience for her, too. You might buy a nice blanket to sit on, or a nice picnic basket for those snack times in the bleachers.

If your interests are closer to home, bake her some cookies, or invest in an evening to remember by rustling up some <a href="http://theherbgardener.blogspot.com/2008/02/making-peal-and-eat-shrimp.html"target="_blank">peel and eat shrimp or <a href="http://holidayideasandcrafts.blogspot.com/2008/02/killer-margarita-recipe.html"target="_blank">margaritas for the occasion. What do you do for Valentine's Day? Here are some last minute tips that might save the day.

Baked Goods

Most people don't eat dessert every night, so the appearance of baked goods often signals a special occasion. If you can bake something yourself, that would be great. If not, stop at a bakery and pick up some special nibble that will show your valentine that you remembered him or her. It doesn't have to be Valentine's Day bait, i.e., red baked goods, cakes replete with hearts or cherubs, but it does have to be something your valentine enjoys.

Margaritas

Women love margaritas. They are one of the most popular mixed drinks ordered in the United States, and the urban myth about groups of women going out partying on margaritas isn't as much of a myth as you might think. If you can, make your own recipe (<a href="http://holidayideasandcrafts.blogspot.com/2008/02/killer-margarita-recipe.html"target="_blank">Here's mine). If you're in a hurry, prepared mixes can be found at any liquor or wine and spirits store.

Don't forget the presentation. Get a nice glass, a lime, and some salt to make the presentation Valentine's Day worthy.

Make the Bed

If you want some romance, pay attention to detail. Put fresh linen on the bed and throw a decorative spread over the top of it. If you don't have a spread or comforter, try placing a single red rose on the center of the bed, or placing a heart shaped pillow or stuffed animal on his/her side. If your bedroom is a disaster, make up an air mattress in the living room. The presence of a group of candles, or better, a fireplace, would help set the scene.

Get Creative With the Card

Cards don't have to be expensive and elaborate confections. Take a piece of copy paper, fold it in quarters and write 'I love you' on it. Use colored pens, or block writing. Inside write, 'You are my everything', with an IOU for a nice walk along the beach or down a country lane. If you have the time, draw two stick figures holding hands. Your personal approach will gain you brownie points.

Fortune Cookie Madness

Buy a bag of fortune cookies and find two that have fortunes that slip out without breaking the cookie. Slip your own fortune inside. The more authentic your fortune looks, the more entertaining the reaction of your valentine will be.

Believe It

For three hours, or however long it takes you to get through the evening, believe that this is a day for lovers . . .your day. Believing will make all of the difference.
Read my feed.

Thoughts on Valentine's Day

The boards are rife with Valentine's Day recommendations. What should you get her? What should you do for him? Don't forget your pets, parents, children, neighbors, the planet, the cosmos . . . . whatever. This blog has no shortage of recommendations either, but as the big day approaches I wanted to take a moment to cut through the hype to what's really important.

We remember moments, not holidays. Think about it. Inspect your best memory, and the part that flashes in front of your mind's eye doesn't last long . . . but it is powerful. Even if you don't want to indulge your feminine side, are a believer that Valentine's Day is a marketing ploy, or don't think that starting a trend that involves another gift giving occasion is good for your wallet, think again.

If you are in love, love someone, or are on the verge, the things you do now may be the stuff that makes those primo flashes that make life worthwhile. The look on her face when you take the brownies out of the oven, the way he touches your shoulder after you give him a holiday backrub.

These moments may be bought with cards and candy, but in the end, they're priceless. When you're taking the hard line about holiday spending, the hoopla, the hype, remember that real lives are involved . . .yours, that of a loved one, a friend, and celebrating them is what it's all about. The organic snapshot that you take away from Valentine's Day may end up being worth more than a thousand boxes of candy.
Read my feed.

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas for Her

Valentine's Day is the one day of the year you can show her you love her without a lot of talking. Women love verbal declarations, but on Valentine's Day, tradition is doing the work for you. Your job is to find a great gift.

Finding Just the Right Gift for Her On Valentine's Day

Don't let Valentine's Day slip by without showing your wife or girlfriend how much you care. With a dazzling number of choices at your disposal, it can be a challenge finding just the thing you'll feel confident she'll like, so let history be your friend.

Look around at what she pays close attention to. Does she subscribe to niche magazines that hint at her interests? What Yahoo forums is she part of? When she looks through the Sunday paper, which ads is she setting aside to investigate in greater detail? When you go shopping together, in which isles is she slowing her pace or stopping to check pricing?

With a little thought and observation you can discover the things that interest her most. After that you can buy her a gift card if nothing else makes you feel comfortable. Just set aside the time to go with her when she uses it.

Making Valentine's Day Easier for You

Once you have an idea about a present, let the Internet do the heavy lifting. Shopping online to find the perfect present can be easier and less expensive than trekking through brick-and-mortar shops. With more secure transaction software, large selections, and great marketing deals like free shipping, filling your Valentine's Day shopping bag has never been easier.

Valentine's Day on a Budget

Observing your budget on Valentine's Day may seem stingy, but it makes good sense. The holiday is really about revealing your sentiments, not going into debt. Ferreting out just the right card may end up doing more for your relationship than a set of crystal stemware, and fine jewelry, although not a bad idea, doesn't have to be the order of the day.

Don't be surprised if the cards that you've been giving her since you met are hidden away a lingerie drawer or box of mementos. You shouldn't underestimate their value to her, and picking the right card is a big part of what Valentine's Day is all about. If you can find the perfect card, the present is less significant.

Creative Valentine's Day Gifts From the Heart

If you love electronics and have a creative bent, write her a song and perform it, or make her a movie. Put together a memory box, a promise box, or a scrapbook. Cook something she loves. A batch of chocolate chip cookies won't break the bank, but it will show that you care.

If you don't have time, but do have resources, flowers are always a good choice; but remember to select flowers that she loves. That way you'll be giving your gift a personal touch in a way that shows you are paying attention.

Spend the Day Doing Something She Loves

Craft fairs and long drives down country lanes may not be your idea of a great afternoon, but if she loves those things, jump in with good grace. Few things say I love you more than participating in the things that interest her without complaint.

Finding her the right gift for Valentine's Day doesn't have to put you in the poorhouse. With a little thought and some observation, busy men on a budget can still be heroes to their honeys. In the end, you can console yourself with the fact that she's worth it, and the holiday only rolls around once a year.

Read my feed.

Make Valentine's Day Special for Her by Picking the Perfect Card

This Valentine's Day, don't forget about the card. You may see the card as an afterthought, but for her it could very well be the main event. Cards, tucked into memory boxes, or between the folds of the best nightie in her lingerie drawer, are her way of visiting the emotional landscape of your relationship. You may think it's about the jewelry, crystal, or expensive dinner, but it's really about the sentiment.

I'm not saying that expensive gifts don't make an impact. Clearly a breathtaking bauble or decadent indulgence would be appreciated. What I am saying is that it's easy to take a casual approach to buying a card, and that would do you both an injustice. I might even go so far as to say that the best way to ensure a great Valentine's Day for you and the woman in your life is to take the time and make the effort to pick the perfect card.
Read my feed.

Tips for Proposing to Her on Valentine's Day

So, you're thinking about popping the big question on Valentine's Day? Want some tips?

Well, you have the right idea. The holiday sets the right tone, so you don't have to rent a hall and start putting up banners, but you do still have to observe the basics.

Be Sure of What You're Getting Into

Valentine's proposals are great if you are pretty sure of the reception you're going to receive. If you think there's a chance that she's going to shoot you down, though, you might want to reconsider. You are running the risk of associating all of the Valentine's Days in your future with the one when the woman you wanted to spend the rest of your life with said no. It's true; you might come to think of the rejection as the best thing that ever happened to you, but why risk it?

There's More Than One Type of Commitment

And what if your question isn't about the big M, but is a step in that general direction, like living together, or traveling to meet the folks. Regardless of the big intimate step, the rules below apply, as do the suggestions. By the way, if I don't get back to it, good luck!

She May Say That She's Immune to Romance, but Don't Believe Her

Even the most subdued woman is moved by the implications of Valentine's Day. She may protest, but the little girl with the gum wrapper twisted around her finger like a wedding ring is in there somewhere. If you think the sentiment might be wasted on your no-nonsense girlfriend, think again.

Proposals Go Good With Meals

Engagement rings and declarations of undying love are a good accompaniment to a meal. I don't know why, but there it is. You might try the breakfast in bed route, or try tying the ring to the stem of a champagne glass with a piece of ribbon, whatever works for your relationship. The operative thing is that it's part of an established ritual, like a meal, and takes place in relaxed circumstances.

Decide About the Surprise

The more pomp and circumstance you put into your build up, the less of a surprise the big moment is likely to be. Rent a limo if you think that will set the stage, but don't be disappointed when she suspects that something is up.

If you want surprise, but don't quite have the constitution for a public declaration in front of witnesses, hiding one celebration inside another, effectively misdirecting her, could work for you. If there is another reason to celebrate, a promotion, birthday, long planned (by you) arrangement, use that as build-up, then spring the proposal as a surprise. That way you can include some of the trappings, like an expensive dinner, overnight trip, flowers. . . you get the idea, and still bowl her over.

Use Some Caution

Whatever you say or do, she'll remember it for years, maybe decades, so give it some thought. Some women don't mind the old: "What do you say we get married?" while others want a declaration that's a little more eloquent. I'm not suggesting Shakespeare here, just a few sentences (Hey, I know this is painful) that tell her what you are feeling.

Look at it this way: You can get some real mileage out of whatever you say. If you aren't the romantic type, this is your shining moment, and you can refer to it in the years to come as a talisman against her complaints that you aren't romantic enough. So, suck it up and make this count. You'll be doing both of you a favor.

This is the part where I'm supposed to say that whatever happens you'll be glad that you declared yourself, and romantic unions are sacred, etc. etc. etc. All that is probably true, and you'll be glad you did it . . . but maybe not as glad as you'll feel when you've gotten it over with.
Read my feed.

Make Pico de Gallo for Cinco de Mayo

Pico de gallo is a garden salsa. It uses the freshest ingredients to make a crunchy and flavorful alternative to the commercially available cooked salsas. With less liquid than traditional salsa, pico de gallo can be used as a condiment in sandwiches and egg recipes, as well as a flavorful ingredient in rice and pasta dishes. Once you understand the basic recipe, you can adjust the proportions and use your own variations to make a healthy summer accompaniment to meats, vegetables, and appetizers.

The Secret to Good Pico de Gallo

The secret to a good pico de gallo is in selecting flavorful tomatoes. Vine ripened tomatoes have the most robust flavor and aroma. Although most recipes use plum tomatoes because they have firm flesh and less water, a mixture of tomatoes made up of three parts plum tomatoes and one part beefsteak or another variety will give you a more complex flavor. The tomatoes should be blanched, skinned, seeded, and the flesh chopped fine.

Pico de Gallo Recipe

1 lb. mixed tomatoes (skinned and seeded)
1 jalapeno pepper, chopped fine (seeded)
½ bell pepper, chopped fine
2 green onions, chopped fine
2 tbsp. minced red onion
2 tbsp. finely chopped cilantro
1 tbsp. finely chopped parsley
1 minced tomatillo (small)
½ tsp. cumin
¼ tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. celery salt
1 tsp. garlic paste (or garlic minced very fine)
1 tbsp. hot sauce
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp. lime juice
1 tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. sugar
½ tsp. pepper
1 tsp. salt

Chop and blend all ingredients and refrigerate for at least two hours. If a drier product is desired, discard some of the extra liquid.

A blend of many ingredients makes your pico de gallo a complex but refreshing addition to a festive lunch or dinner. Cinco de Mayo is a great time to put together a batch of pico de gayo for friends and family. It's fast, easy, and it's always a hit.

Pico de Gallo Variations

This recipe is also excellent with the addition of a diced avocado, chopped black olives, or grated and minced carrot. Turn a simple dinner at your apartment into something elegant by giving her a great dessert that's easy to prepare, inexpensive, and relatively low in calories.

Making Chocolate Covered Strawberries and Champagne for Her

If you aren't allergic to your kitchen, you can give your girlfriend or wife a wonderful little Valentine's pampering. Start with a strawberry. Find some fresh strawberries that look beautiful, and pick up a block of dark or white chocolate chips, whichever she prefers, and a bottle of Champagne.

Make sure your strawberries have their caps on, and are firm to the touch, without bruises or white spots. When desert rolls around, melt the chocolate in a bowl that has been suspended in a pot of boiling water. You don't need a double boiler for this, but use some care not to slosh water into the chocolate.

The chocolate should melt in five to ten minutes, and can be used for dipping thereafter. You can pour her a glass of celebratory Champagne, and finish it off with a luscious strawberry that has been dipped in chocolate halfway up the sides. Insert a toothpick in the top of the strawberry to give yourself something to hold on to while dipping it, and insert the toothpick in a piece of Styrofoam, an orange, apple, or other soft surface after dipping to give it some time to set up before serving.

The presentation is eye popping (remove the toothpick), the dessert is not very caloric, it's easy to prepare, and you come off looking like a prince.

If she doesn't like Champagne, make her favorite drink and serve it in a special glass.

Read my feed.

Valentine's Day Ideas For Guys Who Need Some Help

So, you think that Christmas should have entitled you to some relief from holiday gift giving? Seems kind of unfair, huh, another special day when you have worry about a gift, wrapping paper, proper sizes, a card expressing just the right sentiment, and more. . .well, just more.

If you want to cut the fluff, but don't want to offend your honey, I have some suggestions.

What Do You Booth Need?

Is there something that you both need, that could pass as a gift? If you need to replace your coffeemaker, buy more dishes, or a four slice toaster, you could propose a couple gift - something you both need, and follow it up with a cozy shopping trip and lunch. This will eliminate the guesswork and liberate you from having to wrap something. It may even get you off the hook for a card.

Make an Easy Mini-Commitment for Valentine's Day

Do you need a picnic basket for those future sunny afternoons in the park, or a big fuzzy blanket for watching television together? Inexpensive gifts that promise a future of intimate moments together but don't sport a jewelers tag, can strike just the note of commitment you feel comfortable with, while still making her feel all warm and affectionate.

Bake Something, Really

Nothing says love to a woman like a man doing something domestic for her, especially if it's out of character. How hard can it be to make a batch of brownies, cookies, or cupcakes? Oh, a French toast breakfast wouldn't be bad either.

On Valentine's Day, going for the gusto doesn't mean breaking the bank or dropping down on one knee. Over 50% of men polled in a recent study said that they'd never received flowers, but would probably have enjoyed doing so.

Make Him Something Special for Valentine's Day

You may not feel comfortable sending him a sweetheart bouquet, but you can make him something lavish that will relax and pamper him. For fewer than ten dollars and a half hour of your time, you can make him lavender bath salts, a sure fire winner in the pampering department.

Made from Epsom salt, sea salt, and essential oil, lavender bath salts will relax his muscles, lower his blood pressure, and improve his outlook.

Men are as drawn to the scent if lavender as women, and the effects of a nice long soak in therapeutic salts will have him grateful and anxious to reward you for your thoughtfulness.

Lavender Bath Salt Recipe

Epsom salt and sea salt are available from your local variety or grocery store, and essential oil of lavender is easy to find at any craft store. The recipe can be found at my herb blog: The Herb Gardener: Make Lavender Bath Salts

You can forego the coloring in favor of a more masculine gift. Just place the mixture in a glass or plastic jar. (He probably wouldn't mind if you tied it with a ribbon.)

He can use these great salts whenever he needs to relax and unwind, and this will be one gift that doesn't end up unused at the bottom of his closet.

Special Note:

I make lavender bath salts for my husband. He says that they relax him and don't smell the least bit feminine (his major concern before originally trying them).

Read my feed.

Pet Products For Valentine's Day

Apparently there's some real interest in pet products for Valentine's Day . . . and high time, too. Specialty pet products can make your pet's life more comfortable and safe. You may be new to the world of pet products, so let me give you an assist.

Your cat, dog, fish, bird . . .not to mention, ferret, pot bellied pig, hamster, gerbil, snake or other pet now has the strength of a burgeoning pet industry revolution to see to his every need. New and innovative products are making the daily grind easier, and even though some of these products are frivolous (not to say there's anything wrong with that), others can be very helpful.

Pet Essences

One of my favorites is Pet Essences, a line of products designed to help your pets with emotional and behavioral problems. I've used Pet Essences on my dog, first when we moved, and then later when we've had strong thunderstorms. It has worked well to calm his nerves.

I also use Pet Essences on the cats after they've had a trip to the vet. I was surprised by the difference it makes, but after I gave it some thought, why wouldn't they react strongly to scent? Many animals have a much more refined sense of smell than humans do. (Never use human aromatherapy essential oils on your animals without expert assistance. Cats, particularly, are sensitive to essential oils, and can be harmed or killed by overdosing on these concentrated substances.)

Pet Strollers

I know that it sound silly to buy a stroller for your pet, but there are times when hoofing it isn't practical or even possible. These strollers can hold up to sixty pounds, and are screened to provide comfort and a view. If your beloved cat is interested in the outdoors, but you hesitate leash training him, take him for an excursion in a stroller. He gets to smell the outdoors without any risk for him or you. This is a great solution for indoor cats that sit at the window all summer pining to go out.

Dogs that are getting on in years and suffer from arthritis and hip problems can still take a turn around the park. They get a change of pace without hurting themselves, and you get the satisfaction of knowing that you are giving them a treat that isn't fattening.

Older dogs that are chewing themselves because of boredom, and dogs that are depressed, can get out and see the world, even in areas where traffic congestion, children, and other hazards might make more conventional methods impractical. This is also a good choice for smaller dogs that are more fragile by nature.

Interactive Toys

Interactive toys are good at getting your pet to do what's good for him without knowing it. Today's less active pets need exercise for their minds and bodies. Although there are too many offerings to give you a rundown here, toys like the Kong are a good example. The Kong is a popular rubber toy that has a hole in the center of a hard rubber shell. The idea is to place peanut butter or another treat in the hole and force the dog to work at getting the goodies out. This keeps him occupied, and gives his teeth and gums a workout.

Another example would be a laser mouse. This beam of light comes from what looks like a small flashlight, and can be directed at a wall or the floor. The beam is invisible; only a small dot of light is displayed, which looks like an insect. Your pet will chase the light, getting great exercise, while you sit comfortably in your recliner. (Always be careful to avoid pointing the light directly into an animal's eyes.)

Make Your Pet's Life Easier

Pet stairs that make it easier for your pet to jump on the bed or couch, joint supplements, and heated blankets designed for use with animals can help keep your pets more comfortable as they age. Pets suffer from many of the same illnesses as humans, so soothing aching joints is as pleasant for your pet as it is for you.

The following list of products and Websites will give you additional information on goods that will make their lives easier and more satisfying.

Note: Products not listed below will probably be in the following post: Pet Products For Valentine's Day

Strollers

Pet Essences

Read my feed.

Putting Everything Away

If you're like me, you have piles of opened presents waiting to be put away. Before you incorporate the booty into your life, make a list of the presents that were exchanged this year, and who was on your Christmas list and why. Mention your Christmas menu and how you spent Christmas eve.

Once you have everything written down, mark the year and tuck it in an envelope (a recycled Christmas card envelope would be great) and put it in a spot that you will be revisiting next year. Many of you probably keep scrapbooks or journals, but this is a special reminder that you will secret into your ornament box, or in with your leftover wrapping paper. The goal is to stumble on it next year or the year after while your are doing your holiday preparations. It will be like a literary time capsule, reminding you of a Christmas past.

After a few years, your Christmas decorating will be sprinkled with memories as you see your lists peeking out from your special Christmas stores.
Read my feed.

A Small Christmas Miracle - Having Enough Energy To Enjoy the Day

Are you exhausted before Christmas morning even arives? My last post was about making yeast rolls on Christmas morning, and after I wrote it - in good faith, mind you - I thought about all of the exhausted people who might read that post and want to hang me from the nearest Christmas tree.

Buy rolls, or just burn a cinnamon candle. The most important thing is to have enough energy to enjoy the day.

If you are short on stamina and starting to feel the burn, here are some last minute tips on salvaging your flagging emotional resources, to say nothing of your feet:

Take a hot bath. Beg, borrow, or steal a half hour to take a nice relaxing bath.

Read a chapter in a favorite book. This will calm you down and get you ready for the next round.

Take a ten-minute walk. Walking is invigorating, and the quiet time might remind you of something you've forgotten.

Ask for a neck rub. Tight muscles never helped anyone. Ask for an early gift, and have a loved one give you a five-minute neck massage.

Read my feed.

Make Yeast Rolls for Christmas Morning

At my house, I make yeast rolls on Christmas morning. I use a bread maker to mix the dough while I'm sleeping, then prepare the rolls and finish them off in the oven. It's become a tradition, and although it can be time consuming, there's nothing like homemade baked goods to start the present opening ceremonies.

Read my feed.

Romance Under the Christmas Lights

Once the children have gone to bed, indulge in a little Christmas nuzzling under the tree. Make a memory with your significant other.

When you're running around trying to get everything done, it's easy to forget to live in the moment. He probably won't remember the new tie, but a little romance under the tree will linger in his thoughts.

One year I inflated an air mattress, and my honey and I spent the evening under the tree watching a nice fire in the fireplace. The changing tree lights reflected around the room and made our glasses look like works of art. We played Christmas carols for a while and opened one present. Just one.

It's one of my favorite memories. Don't cheat yourself by ignoring the opportunity to make a great romantic memory this Christmas.
Read my feed.

New Year's Resolutions

While you're sipping egg nog and looking at the scattered paper all over the floor, if your thoughts begin to stray to the new year and all of it's challenges, take a moment to look at these three articles that offer some solid advice about New Year's resolutions.

<a href="http://changing-personal-habits.suite101.com/article.cfm/easy_new_years_resolutions"target="_blank">Easy Resolutions - Important things to remember to do in the New Year

<a href="http://changing-personal-habits.suite101.com/article.cfm/new_years_resolutions"target="_blank">A Few Important Resolutions that will make you healthier and more secure

<a href="http://changing-personal-habits.suite101.com/article.cfm/stick_to_your_new_years_goals"target="_blank">Will power tips that will help you keep the New Year's resolutions you do make

Read my feed.
