Marissa Mayer is back and she wants to fix your address book

Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer on Wednesday announced the launch of Sunshine, a consumer software start-up that is debuting with an address book app that relies on artificial intelligence.

Sunshine is Mayer's first venture and return to the spotlight since stepping down from her role as Yahoo chief executive after the company's $4.48 billion sale to Verizon in 2017.

At launch, Mayer's start-up is rolling out Sunshine Contacts, an address book app that relies on artificial intelligence to find and merge duplicate contacts, fill out incomplete information and continually keep that data up to date. The app integrates with the iOS Contacts app as well as Gmail and will be free to all iOS users with an invitation.

"The idea is that Sunshine Contacts basically becomes the brain that operates your contacts," Mayer told CNBC. "Contacts, in our view, should be a living, changing thing."

The app is also designed to make it easy to share your contact information with others, or keep that data updated for others. One feature, for example, allows users to change their contact info within the app and push it as an update to others who have their information and use Sunshine Contacts.

"As I've been working on contacts, some days I just get really upset and concerned that there are thousands of people out there who still have my Google email address or Yahoo email address," said Mayer, before demonstrating the feature.

That's where in 2003 she met Enrique Munoz Torres, her Sunshine co-founder. There, the two collaborated on a number of projects, including iGoogle, a now-defunct Google product that allowed users to turn the Google website into a customized homepage for their browser. Mayer originally opposed the idea of iGoogle, but Torres' presentation of the project sold her on it.

"I was the keeper of the Google homepage. It was my job to keep it clean, and Enrique got up and his idea was to just put a bunch of stuff on it, and he knew I would just be like 'No,'" Mayer said. "The way he sometimes frames his arguments, it makes me think about things differently."

Torres followed Mayer to Yahoo in 2013, serving as a senior vice president on search and ads. The two began to discuss the foundational ideas for Sunshine in their last year at Yahoo, Mayer said. They decided the ideas didn't make sense at the time but could be worth revisiting.

The two left Yahoo when the sale to Verizon was completed in June 2017.

"Six months later Enrique called me and we got together and he was like ' I'm still excited to start that company that we were talking about a year ago,' and I was like, 'I am, too,'" Mayer recalled.

The two have been working on Sunshine since 2018. The company is based in Palo, Alto, California, and has raised a $20 million seed round from inside and outside investors including Felicis Ventures, Unusual Ventures and WIN Ventures.

"Over the course of time, I've developed a tremendous amount of respect for Marissa as a product thinker and also Marissa as a person," Torres said. "Working with Marissa brainstorming about this company and brainstorming about products in other places, the alignment was always very quick."

Sunshine Contacts is the first in a suite of planned consumer apps. They aim for Sunshine to release apps focused on family sharing, scheduling, event organization and small group communication down the road. By making contacts better, Sunshine will create a foundation from which it can build other apps, Mayer said.

"We believe the issues with contacts are pervasive but a lot of people have learned to be content with the status quo," Torres said. "That's the class of problems we like to gravitate to."

Mayer referred to these type of apps as "small-scale sharing," saying that consumers have evolved over the last couple of years. They no longer want mega apps that take care of everything for them, but are open to having more apps that are really good at serving specific purposes, Mayer believes.

"The mega app that does everything for everyone is something that has become less appealing over time," she said. "We want to have apps that take on specific problems."

Consumers have also become more comfortable with paying for apps that provide them with value, Mayer said. Although Sunshine Contacts will be free at launch, Mayer envisions a freemium business model further on where users can pay for additional features within Sunshine apps.

Unlike most consumer tech companies, Sunshine vows not to make a business out of the data users store in its services.

"The data that you give us, you're giving it to us for the purpose of improving your experience with the product," Torres said. "We're not going to be targeting advertising based on that data, we're not going to sell it in aggregate form, in individual form, in any shape or form."

He added, "We don't think it's reasonable to profit out of users' data."

If you are a fan of Fiction, be it motion picture or print novels. You must have certainly come across the Fictional character usually identified as 'Count Dracula'.

What you may not know, is that this widely representatd Fictional character was actually inspired my a man whose atrocitieties made him a model for the Fictional character. His name according to several historical records is Vlad.

Few names have cast more terror into the human heart than Dracula. The legendary vampire, has inspired countless horror movies, television shows and other bloodcurdling tales of vampires.

Though Dracula is a purely fictional creation, the infamous character was modeled after a real person who happened to have a taste for blood: Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia or — as he is better known — Vlad the Impaler. The morbid nickname is a testament to the Wallachian prince's favorite way of dispensing with his enemies.

Asides having the same name, the two Draculas have much in common, according to historians who have studied the link between the fictional vampire count and Vlad III.

The real Dracula 'Vlad III' was born in 1431 in what is now Transylvania, the central region of modern-day Romania. However, the link between Vlad the Impaler and Transylvania is fueled by the real, historic Vlad's lifestyle in Transylvania, who also happened to live in a Castle, which has become a tourist attraction today that is often referred to as Dracula's castle. It ia believed to be the residence of the Wallachian prince.

Why they call him Dracula is because of the unusual nature he Impales his victims after killing them.

The leader of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos chapter, Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo, recently hosted the winner of the BBNaija Season 5 winner, Olamilekan Moshood Agbeleshe aka Laycon.

During his visit, MC Oluomo gifted Laycon a cash gift in the sum of N2.5 million.

The union boss took to his Instagram page to share photos from the event.

Napoli should be thanked for not risking the health of Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Vincenzo De Luca, president of the Campania region of Italy.

After two players from the squad tested positive for Covid-19, the local health authority (ASL), decided to prevent them from travelling to an away Serie A fixture with the league champions.

Despite this decree, Juventus were angered by the inability of the fixture to go ahead, claiming that protocols were not followed.

No fewer than two persons on Wednesday lost their lives while seven others were injured in multiple auto crash along Odota area in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

Some eye-witnesses told THE INFORMANT247 that the accident, which occurred at about 1:30pm, involved a tricycle; three vehicles – a truck , a commercial cab and a private car.

The unfortunate incident is attributed to brake failure from one of the vehicles.

Uzodinma: Okorocha, Others Won't Go Unpunished Over N106Bn Misappropriated Fund

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma has received reports from the Judicial Commission of Inquiry (JCI) on contracts awarded from 2011 to 2019 under former Governor Rochas Okorocha’s administration, including the short-lived period of Emeka Ihedioha.

DAILY POST reports that the JCI findings indicted the former Governors to have misappropriated over 106 billion naira on unexecuted contracts.

According to the chairman of the commission, Justice B. C Iheaka, important findings from the report included a high tech contract scam, outra

geous inflation of prices, unprofessional supervision of awarded contracts, several unexecuted contracts among other things.
The Governor while reacting to the JCI reports commended the commission for a thorough job done without compromise.
He also thanked the civil servants for rendering assistance to the JCI during the investigation.
He, however, resolved to hold all persons or companies involved in the said contract scam accountable for it until the monies are recovered from them.

Nigerians facing ‘grave life-threatening problems’

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo declared on Tuesday that millions of Nigerians were facing “grave life-threatening problems”.

He said the time was ripe for individuals at various arms of government to focus on how to improve the welfare of the citizens.

Osinbajo, who made the declaration at the closing of a two-day executive-legislative leadership retreat held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the elected leaders would be considered irresponsible if they cannot address the nation’s “life-threatening problems.”

The vice-president urged the public officers to collaborate on how they would not fail Nigerians who had given them the opportunity to serve at the high leadership levels.

He said: “Let me say that every generation of leadership must understand context. Law itself must be interpreted and implemented in context.

“What is the reality of the context that we operate in today? We all know, our nation has millions of extremely poor people, the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened employment and poverty.

“We have huge deficits in infrastructure, many children are out of school. If that is our context, we will be callous and irresponsible if we don’t come together, work together to sort out these grave life-threatening problems our people have to confront every day.

“It is time to focus on what we have been elected or appointed to do. This is the welfare of our people. The law and practice as between parliament and executive is a means to an end not an end to itself. The means must not jeopardise the end.”

Criminal Charges Filed Against Ex-gov Ohakim For Using Fashola Name To Defraud

Police authorities have commenced the criminal trial against a former governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

In the charge marked CR/993/2020 and dated September 23, 2020, the office of the Inspector-General of Police accused Ohakim of fraud and false information.

The former Governor was equally accused of using the name of the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

In addition, the prosecution alleged that Ohakim claimed in his statement to the police that he gave Lady Chinyere Lilian Amuchienwa the sum of N100 million for his governorship in 2019, which he could not prove in the statement.

The Police said the former Governor will soon be arraigned in court.

The three-count charge against Ohakim, signed by Mr Stanley Nwodo read:

‘That you Ikedi Ohakim, on or about the 23rd day of May 2019 at Asokoro, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did unlawfully gave false information against one Chinyere Amuchienwa, that she threatened you with gun knowing it to be false and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 140 of the Penal Code Law of the Northern Nigeria, 1968.

”That you Ikedi Ohakim, on or about the 23rd day of May 2019, at Asokoro, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did unlawfully gave false information against one Chinyere Amuchienwa, that you have a plot of land for sale at Lagos state, knowing it to be false and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 140 of the Penal Code Law of the Northern Nigeria, 1968.

‘That you Ikedi Ohakim on or about the 23rd day of May 2019 at Asokoro, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did unlawfully used derogatory the name of Raji Fashola as the owner of the purported land situated at Ikeja, Lagos state and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 140 of the Penal Code Law of the Northern Nigeria, 1968.’

In a related development, an Upper Area Court sitting in Mpape, Abuja, has sentenced one Kingsley Ogam, who is said to be working for the former Governor to eight months in prison with an option of N30,000 fine.

In the charge marked CR/496/2020, Ogam was sentenced to prison on September 24, 2020.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Ogam was arraigned before the court for defamation of character, injurious falsehood and criminal intimidation.

The prosecution said the offence is punishable under Section 392, 393 and 397 of the Penal Code Law.

Ogam was said to have defamed the character of Lady Chinyere Lilian Amuchienwa.

He was sentenced to prison by Mohammad Maraca after he pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

The court also ordered him to write an apology letter to Amuchienwa.

Buhari’s Northern Supporters Considering Jonathan For 2023 Presidential Run

The thinking is that it will satisfy the increasing clamour for power shift to the South. Buhari’s close loyalists believed that Jonathan would be harmless to their group interest and as such the right person to take over if power were to shift to the South, “he handed over power peacefully and nursed no bitterness against anyone and therefore will not be a threat to the interest of the north,” according to a top source in Buhari’s camp who didn’t want to be identified.

The attraction to Jonathan’s possible candidacy is that he will serve just one term of four years.

In a related development yesterday, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disclosed that it would not discriminate against any person in the build-up to the next presidential election on its platform, including a former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who the party said was free to take another shot in 2023.

According to multiple sources within the northern establishment spoken to by THISDAY, the idea of having Jonathan succeed Buhari is a very attractive preposition, “the former president is a good man, he did well in his first term and we believe he has learnt his lessons and where he failed and is unlikely to repeat those mistakes that cost him the presidency in 2015. He did alot for the North, so why not?” Another source privy to the development also told THISDAY last night “yes we are looking at the Jonathan option, he is a safe bet and of course a very amiable gentleman, who is not likely to rock the boat.”

Thus, within the northern establishment, the consensus is beginning to gain momentum, with Buhari’s loyalists pushing the button to have Jonathan succeed their boss.

THISDAY checks also showed a growing number of influential northern leaders of thought are favourably disposed to the idea of Jonathan’s second coming.

This is particularly because a majority of those, who have bought into this idea, were of the view that the former president represented the shortest route for the north to regain power.

By virtue of the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, one can only be sworn in as president for two terms of four years, although Jonathan too had also taken the oath of office twice.

Those supporting Jonathan reason that if another southerner emerges, more so a young candidate, he is likely to spend eight years in office before power returns to the north.

The north, and Buhari in particular are said to be impressed with the way Jonathan conceded defeat and proceeded to hand over power, when he lost the 2015 election and the way he has since conducted himself out of power.

Multiple sources told THISDAY that Buhari and his loyalists have over the years come to see Jonathan as someone, who is trustworthy and dependable, and to whom he could hand over power in 2023.

For instance, they also point at the growing friendship and bond between both men, as Buhari on many occasions, had expressed his astonishment at the way Jonathan conceded defeat and praised him as a statesman.

One of such occasions was in January 2018, Buhari at a dinner for top members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the presidential villa in Abuja had said he went temporarily into a coma when former President Goodluck Jonathan called him to concede defeat in the 2015 presidential election.

He had said then he felt Jonathan had stayed long enough in office to have caused problems when he lost the election. He described the former President’s decision to accept defeat as a “great” one.

“When the former president rang me, I went temporarily into a coma,” the president said.

“I will never forget the time. It was quarter past 5 p.m. and he said he called to congratulate me and that he had conceded.

“He asked if I heard him, and I said yes. I thanked him for his statesmanship,” he said.

“The truth is after being a deputy governor, a governor, vice president and president for six years, and he took that decision is great. He could have caused some problems. He had stayed long enough to cause problems.”

In 2015 after losing the election, in an unprecedented step, Jonathan had called Buhari to concede defeat and issued a statement the following after conceding, urging his supporters to accept the result. He urged his supporters to follow “due process” in channeling their frustrations at losing the election amid fear of violence. Doyin Okupe, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has made what he called 15 revelations about the Second Niger Bridge.

In a message he entitled “GEJ, Buhari & The People,” Okupe wrote:

[1] The Bridge is NOT Being Constructed by the FGN.

[2] It’s a PPP Project which the FGN contributes a tiny fraction.

[3] The 2nd Niger Bridge Will Cost about N117 billion.

[4] Started in 2013 and should have been completed in 2017, but worked stopped for 31 months. Completion date Not certain now.

[5] FGN share of the Cost is N30billion. Jonathan through the Sure-P paid N21.2billion (71%) including N7billion for the completion of preparatory work (Phase 1).

[6] 38% of the work has been done as at Jan 2015.

[7] The N140b Oshiomhole said was wasted on Admin cost on the bridge was a lie, as admin cost can not be higher than the cost of the whole project.

[8] Buhari’s Govt Paid *N2billion* NOT $2billion as Osinbajo said during the Anambra State election. They will be paying another N3.05b when the budget is approved.

Senator Umar Sadiq representing North-central Senatorial District in the upper legislative chamber has said that the Southeast part of the country should be given the chance to produce the next president in 2023.
The Kwara North-born Senator who bared his thoughts on the 2023 political discussion , cited equity and fairness as basis for consideration of the Southeast region to produce the next President of the country.
Sen. Umar in an exclusive interview with Sunday Sun, described zoning as a useful tool for all inclusiveness in politics to address the needs and aspirations of all interest groups in a multifaceted society both religious, cultural as well as traditional.
In his words; "Though it has its weaknesses, but it is a very good tool in balancing and stabilising the polity. It is a good tool that can be used to accommodate and address the needs and aspirations of all interest groups in a multifaceted society both religious, cultural as well as traditional. So, I believe in zoning.
Speaking on the 2023 Presidential ticket, Senator Umar said that zoning the Presidential ticket to the Southeast will guarantee stability in the nation's polity, since other regions had produced presidents for the nation.
He said, "I would imagine that because of that fundamental principle of all inclusiveness and for the need to stabilize the country, the presidential ticket should be zoned to the region that has never enjoyed the seat. So, if you zone it to the South we have the Southwest, the South-south and the Southeast and out of all the three Southern zones, to me I think the Southeast is the only region that has not enjoyed the seat of the president. With simple logic and sympathy and all of that we imagine that if any party decides to zone its presidential ticket to the South, the Southeast should be considered first.

Umar also listed the gains of President Muhammadu Buhari since 2015 till date, while adding that more is needed to be done. He bared his mind on the Kwara Otoge Movement, the Water Resources Bill, his book and other pertinent issues.

Atiku, Sunday Dare, Saraki, Others Call For SARS Reform After Viral Shooting Video

Minister of Youths and Sport Development Sunday Dare has joined voices condemning the recurring brutality of the Nigeria Police Force’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad after video of the shooting of a young man in front of a hotel in Ughelli, Delta State went viral on Saturday, Igbere TV reports.

The video showed how there was confusion around Wetland Hotel in Ughelli where the policemen allegedly killed the victim and escaped with his vehicle – a white Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle.

Global rights group Amnesty International, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President Bukola Saraki have also condemned the act and called for the reform of SARS.

Mr Dare said the Federal Government would look into the reports of harassment of Nigerians by SARS.

Igbere TV reports that in a statement issued on Saturday by his special assistant John Joshua-Akanji, Dare said he had been monitoring reports of the attacks by SARS, adding that relevant government agencies will investigate the incidents.

“The minister of youth and sports development, who has also been monitoring the reports of alleged SARS harassment and attacks, has called for immediate investigations that will unravel the truth,” he said.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, wrote;

“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Police was set up to confront violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other related crimes.

“However, the unit has today morphed into an oppressor of the Nigerian masses who strive every day for a better life.

“Reports of intimidation, harassment and outright extortion by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have continued unabated.

“I strongly condemn their cruel actions against our people, and I urge the government to rise to the occasion and nip this monstrosity in the bud with the seriousness it deserves.

“It is expedient that the activities of SARS are reviewed to ensure that the rogue elements are excised from the unit and sanity returned to its operations.”

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki wrote; “The reports of the continued harassment, illegal arrest, detention and high handedness by rogue cells of the SARS Unit of Police against innocent Nigerians - most of them young people - in spite of efforts to reform the Police & raise standards of policing, are disheartening.

“A situation where the officers of Police become a threat to the lives and property of the very citizens they swore to protect is condemnable and unacceptable.

“I call on the Federal Government to immediately put a stop to these reprehensible activities and restructure the unit to better perform its lawful duties of safe guarding the lives and property of the Nigerian people.”

BREAKING: Sporadic Gunshots In Akure As APC, PDP Political Thugs Clash

Tension heightened in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Sunday morning when thugs suspected to be from the camp the of All Progressive Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP attacked each other.

During the fracas, sporadic shootings rented the air as motorists and passers-by scampered for safety.

With the busy Oba Adesida road deserted which also extended to Arakale axis of the city, those who were on their way to church were forced to turn back in order not to be caught in the web of the violent attack.

The thugs armed with dangerous weapons were said to be about 70 in number.

Two persons were allegedly shot during the attack.

It was gathered that the early morning crisis was a reprisal attack by suspected APC thugs following an attack on their members at Ijomu/Oba-Nla junctions of the state capital by PDP thugs on Saturday night.

According to a source, policemen who were drafted from A-Division Police Station which was few meters from the scene of the crisis could not stop the thugs who were said to be armed with guns, machetes and other dangerous weapons.

The governorship election in the state will hold six days from now.

PDP, Governors Tackle Buhari Over Attack On Obasanjo, Jonathan, Yar’Adua

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd. ), on Thursday justified the recent increase in the price of petrol in the country, saying it made no sense for the commodity to be cheaper in Nigeria than in Saudi Arabia.

Buhari , who said this in his nationwide broadcast to mark the nation’ s 60th independence anniversary , gave an indication of further hikes in the price of petrol and blamed his predecessors between 1999 and 2015 for near destruction of the country .

But opposition People Democratic Party and the PDP governors said Nigeria was not only going backwards , but also more divided under Buhari .
The President, in his speech , defended the recent petrol price hike. He said , “ A responsible government must face realities and take tough decisions .
“ Petroleum prices in Nigeria are to be adjusted . We sell now at N 161 per litre. A comparison with our neighbours will illustrate the point.

“ Chad which is an oil producing country charges N 362 per litre. Niger, also an oil producing country sells one litre at N 346. In Ghana, another oil producing country, petroleum pump price is N326 per litre. Further afield , Egypt charges N 211 per litre. Saudi Arabia charges N168 per litre. It makes no sense for oil to be cheaper in Nigeria than in Saudi Arabia .”

He specifically blamed those who were in charge of the country between 1999 and 2015 when he took over , saying they presided over the near destruction of the country.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo , the late Umar Yar’ Adua and former President Goodluck Jonathan were in charge of the country during the period Buhari mentioned.

The President said , “ No government in the past did what we are doing with such scarce resources. We have managed to keep things going in spite of the disproportionate spending on security .
“ Those in the previous governments from 1999 to 2015 , who presided over the near destruction of the country have now the impudence to attempt to criticise our efforts. In the circumstances , a responsible government must face realities and take tough decisions . ”

Buhari also admitted that the nation ’s economy under his watch was in crisis. He, however, claimed the situation was the same with every economy of the world .
The President also admitted the various security challenges affecting parts of the country.
He said , “ Today , I am aware that our economy along with every single economy in the world is in crisis.
“ We still face security challenges in parts of the country, while our society suffers from a high loss of moral rectitude which is driven by unbridled craving for political control .

Lamenting that Nigerians dwelt on divisive issues , Buhari said , “ An underlying cause of most of the problems we have faced as a nation is our consistent harping on artificially contrived fault lines that we have harboured and allowed unnecessarily to fester.
“ In addition, institutions such as civil service, police , the judiciary, the military all suffered from a general decline.”

The President said the outcome of the recent governorship election in Edo State confirmed his belief in credible polls .

He said , “ I am a firm believer in transparent, free , fair and credible elections as has been demonstrated during my period as a democratically elected President.
“ The recent build -up and eventual outcome of the Edo State election should encourage Nigerians that it is my commitment to bequeath to this country processes and procedures that would guarantee that the people ’s votes count.

“ The problems with our electoral process are mainly human induced as desperate desire for power leads to desperate attempts to gain power and office .

“ Democracy , the world over and as I am pursuing in Nigeria, recognises the power of the people . However , if some constituencies choose to bargain off their power , they should be prepared for denial of their rights .”
The President noted that Nigeria grappled with multiple challenges with a population exceeding 200 million occupying the same land mass but 52 percent residing in urban areas.

According to him , 60 years of nationhood provides an opportunity to ask questions on the extent to which Nigerians have sustained the aspirations of the country’ s founding fathers .
He said Nigerians needed to begin a sincere process of national healing, saying the 60th independence anniversary presented a genuine opportunity “ to eliminate old and outworn perceptions that are always put to test in the lie they always are. ”

Emphasising the need for Nigerians to unite, Buhari said , “ I am convinced that if we pursue our aspirations together, we will be able to achieve whatever we desire . That informed our adopting the theme together to mark this epochal event.
“ Together , we can change our condition for the better and more importantly , together we can do much more for ourselves and for our country .

“ Nigeria is not a country for Mr President, any ruling or the opposition party but a country for all of us and we must play our part, irrespective of challenges we face , to make this country what we desire . ”
He said his regime was grappling with the dual challenge of saving lives and livelihoods in face of drastically reduced resources.
But the PDP spokesman , Kola Ologbondiyan, in an interview with The PUNCH on Thursday evening, berated Buhari over his comments on Obasanjo , Yar ’Adua and Jonathan .

He said , “ It is unfortunate that our President can turn around today to attempt to rewrite history . Nigerians are aware and the facts are there that this country of ours was not as divided as it is today. If he disputes this fact , let him tell Nigerians how he won the 2015 elections . It is a fact that the Boko - Haram terrorists were driven out of their strongholds and elections were held in the 774 local government areas of Nigeria and results were declared .

“ It is also an undisputed fact that the agitations by component units of this nation for self - determination have not been as loud as they are today under General Buhari ; you have people from the Sout- West calling for Oduduwaa Republic , the South- East for Biafra , the Middle Belt and so on. The reason is simple , this regime from its conduct and utterances has given an impression of ‘ we versus them.’ The level of nepotism is legendary . The corruption is beyond imagination , yet the regime carries on like nothing is wrong . We appeal to this regime especially the President to change his ways so that history can be kind to him .”

Also, the PDP spokesman , in a statement titled “ Buhari’ s Independence Day Speech , A Slap on Nigerians - PDP … Exposes Illogicalities In President’ s Fuel Price Comparisons, ” faulted the President’ s speech .

He stated , “ President Buhari’ s attempt to justify the increase of fuel price in Nigeria by comparing it to the N 168 per litre cost in Saudi Arabia is a morbid joke, noting that the minimum wage in Saudi Arabia is N 305, 113 ( 3000 Saudi Riyals) , ten times higher than our paltry N 30,000 , which is largely unimplemented in Nigeria.

“ Is Mr President not aware that , on the average, a person working in Saudi Arabia earns around 4,230 SAR ( N430 , 267) to 16, 700 SAR ( N1 ,698, 693) per month?
“ Our party charges Mr President to always check his books before making such offensive comparisons including the price in Egypt where monthly average earnings are around N 222, 841 ( 9, 200 EGP ) against our N 30,000 .

“ In comparing our costs with other countries such as Ghana, Chad and Niger where purchasing powers of citizens are much more higher, did Mr President reflect on costs of house rent, education , healthcare and average dependence on fuel for daily survival by ordinary citizens as obtainable in Nigeria?”

The PDP Governors’ Forum led by the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, said Buhari ’s actions had divided Nigeria.

The forum, in a statement on Thursday titled, ‘ Reflection on Nigeria @ 60: The past, present and way forward… We need a national dialogue ,’ issued by Tambuwal, said Buhari supervised the nation’ s slide into extreme decay within just five years in power.

It said in spite of enviable strides recorded since independence 60 years ago, the nation appeared to be on reverse gear with the state of affairs in the country .

The PDP governors ’ forum said , “ In the last five years, under the APC -controlled administration , Nigeria has continued on the downward slide into extreme decay , with the country displacing India as the poverty capital of the world , with an estimated 87 million Nigerians living on less than $ 1.9 US a day (Brooking Institute 2018 ) .

“ We as leaders must strive harder to make sure that poverty is minimised in all parts of the country . This is even made worse by the fact that in 2019 , Nigeria ranked 93rd out of 117 qualifying countries with a score of 27. 9 below Guinea and Mali in the Global Hunger index .

“ It is also regrettable to note that the Buhari - led APC administration has plunged Nigeria deeper into the debt trap after the country had exited from its initial debt burden from the London and Paris Clubs under the PDP - led administration .

“ It is indeed sad to observe that Nigeria’s external debt hit a 16 year high of $27 billion in December 2019, just higher than the $20 .8bn in external level as at 2005 when Nigeria exited from the club of its foreign creditors. ”
