Meralco Bolts

Bolts 116, Bossing 114

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 22 Jul 2026 06:50:07 +0000

The Meralco Bolts need to talk seriously on how to finish off games. In their last game against Blackwater, they managed to put some order on the PBA Governors' Cup form charts – but just barely.

It took the heroics of Chris Banchero and Chris Newsome and a costly error by Blackwater in the dying seconds before the Bolts could survive the Bossing, 116-114, last 21 July at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

For a long while, Meralco seemed to have the game well under control after going to the fourth period with a 98-91 lead and even stretched the difference to a seemingly impregnable 110-92 count, still 7:35 to go.

Then Blackwater staged an epic comeback, tying the game up at 114-all and even getting the chance to take the upper hand inside the final 35 seconds.

Sadly for the Bossing, however, both Sedrick Barefield and Kentrell Barkley missed their respective tries and Banchero was able to snag the rebound and issue a fastbreak pass to Newsome, whose layup made it 116-114, only 3.9 ticks left.

Whatever hopes Blackwater may have had of at least equalizing vanished when RK Ilagan dribbled off his foot with the ball going to the backcourt just before the final buzzer sounded.

"You have to give Blackwater credit," said Meralco coach Luigi Trillo after his team notched a second straight win to catch Blackwater at 2-1 in Group B.

"I think we were up in the third quarter by 17 points. They have no quit and that’s a testament to what coach Pat’s been doing there. They’re playing really good," added Trillo. "Good na lang that we were able to shoot that last shot on that pass to 'New.'"

Despite scoring only a point in the entire second half Antonio Hester still led Meralco with 25 points on top of 12 rebounds. Newsome and Banchero added 16 apiece with the latter’s output anchored mostly on three 4-pointers.

Bolts 122, Elastopainters 114

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Tue, 21 Jul 2026 05:30:57 +0000

The Meralco Bolts rode on a sizzling third-quarter performance to romp off with a 122-114 bounceback win over Rain or Shine in Group B of the PBA Governors’ Cup last 18 July at the Ynares Center-Antipolo.

Jason Brickman presided over that game-changing 41-23 exchange after the halftime break, rifling in nine as the Bolts wrested control, 95-83, after trailing by as many as 11 in the first 24 minutes of action.

Brickman finished with 19 points that went with seven assists in a Player of the Game-winning performance that helped Meralco quickly get on the board after absorbing a 97-98 heartbreaker while playing all-Filipino against Phoenix in its conference opener.

"This win is very important, every game is important. I think we have a tough group and all the games are going to be tough to win so (it’s) important to bounce back after a loss," said Brickman.

Antonio Hester, answering the Bolts’ call with their original import Jordon Varnado out on injury, had a solid 21-9 production in his maiden appearance for the squad.

"Hulog siya ng langit. It’s nice to have a quality guy like Hester while JV is injured," said coach Luigi Trillo of Hester, who previously played for Terrafirma and Magnolia.

"He knows the league, he knows the other import (Aaron Fuller) having played against him in Indonesia. He’s heaven-sent. He’s got good rapport with the guys, plays bigger than his size."

The Bolts also drew heads-up plays from Chris Banchero (15), Bong Quinto (14), CJ Cansino (12) and Chris Newsome (10).

Fuller’s 28-10, Adrian Nocum’s 21 and Vince Cuajao’s season-high 19 went down the drain as the Elasto Painters, playing for the first time since trading Gian Mamuyac to Phoenix, lost back-to-back games in the initial salvo of the conference.

They are now on their first 0-2 start since the Season 48 Philippine Cup.

Can Vince Magbuhos Shine In The Governor's Cup?

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 09 Jul 2026 03:22:05 +0000

After two conferences, the Meralco Bolts are still hoping that Vince Magbuhos will proved to be another second-round gem for the team.

The 6-foot-5 Fil-Italian was picked no. 19th overall by Meralco in the Season 50 draft, a late selection which the team wishes would turn out to be another case of Bong Quinto or Aaron Black.

Quinto was a 2018 second round pick, picked 14th while Black was the 18th pick in the 2019 draft.

Both are now a huge part of Meralco’s rotation, with Quinto winning his first ever PBA championship along with the franchise during the Season 48 Philippine Cup. Black unfortunately, was injured back then.

Coach Luigi Trillo said the team is viewing Magbuhos’ case in the same manner.

"Were excited because we’ve had a lot of second rounders evolve with us. Bong and Aaron. Even our late first rounders have contributed and developed well with us. CJ and Brandon are a part of our core now," Trillo said a few months ago.

"It remains to be seen if he can adapt and adjust to the PBA kind of play, but I think for a second rounder to go that late in the draft, our whole coaching staff was happy we got to draft him."

The Bolts actually had an idea what the big man out of Adamson could bring to the table, having invited him for a workout prior to the draft.

And Trillo admitted liking what he saw.

"We brought him into our practice before the draft with some other draftees to see them up close," he recalled.

"Our whole staff saw that he could stretch the floor for us, decent three-point shooter. In the UAAP and MPBL he looked like he was trying to make the right decision whether of dribble hand offs or pick and rolls," added the Meralco coach. "He seems like he has decent lateral movement defensively. High basketball IQ."

But as in any incoming rookies, Magbuhos has to earn his spurs at Meralco.

"We hope Vince can help us. He has to earn it in practice, and when coach Nenad gives him his opportunity," said Trillo.

Magbuhos finished his MPBL contract with the Quezon Huskers before signing with Meralco.

Cebu Offers A Modern Venue For The PBA Games

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 08 Jul 2026 06:34:00 +0000

SPIN.ph reported that the city of Cebu is getting ready to welcome the opening of the SM Seaside Arena on 9 July. This is a 25,000-seat indoor venue that is projected to rival the best Metro Manila could offer and help establish the highly-urbanized central Visayas city as a viable alternative for grand festivities, including major sports events.

The new facility is probably a version of SM's Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City that over the years since its opening in 2012, has also become a venue of choice for sports, concerts and other activites requiring a big air-conditioned covered arena.

The arena features a distinctive wave-shaped, seven-storey façade. Inside, it boasts advanced center-hung LED displays, professional-grade 360-degree ribbon boards, 5G connectivity, and exclusive corporate premium suites.

The PBA, according to SPIN.ph sources, is already looking at the arena as venue for its Cebu games. Also showing interest, the same sources said, are the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and the East Asia Super League (EASL).

For starters, the Cebu Arena will hold its first big event this Saturday (11 July) with the holding of the "BINI Cignals: Anniversary Celebration", featuring the popular all-female, all-Filipino pop group formed by a defunct broadcast company.

The PBA can still hold playoff matches for its Season 50 Governors Cup later this year, but there might not be enough time to fix the schedule and most likely, the league will play in the new venue in Season 51.

The SBP on the other hand, previously hinted bringing some of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup games down South in 2027. The country was chosen as host of the continental meet last year by the FIBA Regional Office-Asia.

EASL CEO Henry Kerins, meanwhile, likewise expressed the intention of holding the 2027 EASL Finals at the new playing arena located within the SM Seaside Complex, as per SPIN.ph sources.

The regional league hosted the 2024 EASL Final Four at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, which proved to be a huge success even without a Filipino team.

What Are The Rule Changes In The PBA's Governor's Cup?

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Tue, 30 Jun 2026 05:14:00 +0000

To ensure that PBA players, especially those in the Gilas Pilipinas pool familiar with FIBA rules, the league is set to adopt certain guidelines on officiating adhering to the standards set by the world governing body for basketball.

The impending changes were brought up during league officials' meeting with PBA coaches.

"Magbabago tayo next conference ng tawagan, situational and fouls," stressed Commissioner Willie Marcial, who graced the Gilas Pilipinas open workout last 22 June at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan.

"Much closer (to FIBA calls). Ganun ka-suporta ang PBA sa Gilas Pilipinas."

Jumpballs will now be scrapped in favor of possession arrows, although the PBA will stick to its 12 minutes per quarter, six personal fouls, length of timeouts, and the four-point line.

"Hindi naman lahat babaguhin," said PBA board vice-chairman and Barangay Ginebra governor Alfrancis Chua.

But he likewise emphasized the adjustment will specifically be beneficial to members of the national team pool.

"Yung adjustment kasi talagang malayo. Every time we play (internationally), iba yung fouls dito (PBA), iba yung fouls doon (FIBA). We’re just adjusting middle of the game na," added Chua, who is also Gilas program director and team manager.

"Minsan sobrang physical sila, minsan naman mahipan mo lang foul," he said. "So we need to adapt. We’re just thinking to at least help the players who are playing for Gilas."

Officiating has become again a major issue in the mid-season Commissioner's Cup.

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao complained about Chua's presence and complaining on the Ginebra bench as intimidating to game officials, while TNT counterpart Chot Reyes also had his own misgivings about the matter, referring with a poker face to officiating in the just-concluded best-of-seven finals as 'excellent.'

Gilas Prepares For Intense Training At Brisbane

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 27 Jun 2026 06:51:25 +0000

The Philippine men’s basketball team warms up for its campaign in the third window of the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers as it undergoes a weeklong training camp in Brisbane, Australia.

Gilas Pilipinas departed last 23 June for Down Under, with coach Tim Cone leading his 12-man roster.

"We’ll be there (Brisbane) for four days before we proceed to New Zealand," said Cone on the eve of the team’s departure that saw it hold an open workout before Gilas fans at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Gilas will play two friendlies on 28 and 29 June, one of them against NBL team Brisbane Bullets, who are helping the Filipinos prepare for their road games against the Tall Blacks and Boomers.

"Brisbane Bullets are helping us out in terms of lending their facilities to us. So we’re going to take full advantage of it and try to acclimate to the (cold) weather," said Cone.

With the exception of Kevin Quiambao, who didn’t join the team in the workout due to a personal matter, the rest of the 11 players showed up including new members Mike Philips, Justin Baltazar, Troy Rosario, and Juan Gomez De Liano, who took the spot of the injured Scottie Thompson.

Completing the lineup were Justin Brownlee, RJ Abarrientos, Chris Newsome, June Mar Fajardo, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo, and Dwight Ramos.

Carrying an event 2-2 record in Group A and already assured of a berth in the second round of the qualifiers, Gilas takes on New Zealand on 3 July, then flies to Australia for its 6 July game against the Boomers.

Australia currently leads the group with a perfect 4-0 record, New Zealand is tied with the Philippines at 2-2, while Guam is at the rear with a 0-4 slate.

Familiarity With The Bolts Is What Varnado Brings

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Fri, 26 Jun 2026 02:49:31 +0000

Jordon Malik Varnado, the import of the Meralco Bolts in the 2026 Governor's Cup, was born on 12 May 1997. He is the son of Janice and Winston Varnado, and the younger brother of former Mississippi State star Jarvis Varnado. Jarvis currently holds the NCAA record for career blocked shots with 564.

Jordon is a solid 6-foot-6 power forward who played for Haywood High School. He led the Tomcats to a 35-2 record and a TSSAA Class AA State Championship in his senior season, the school’s first-ever state title.

During the state tournament, Varnado averaged 21 points and 15 rebounds per game and was named MVP. He was also included as part of the AA All-State First Team by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association and was chosen as the All-West Tennessee Player of the Year by the Jackson Sun. His squad was undefeated against teams in the state of Tennessee.

During his senior campaign (2018-19), Varnado started in 20 games (missed four games due to a concussion) and led the team in scoring by averaging 21.5 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game. He also led the team in total points (429), minutes per game (33.8), field goal percentage (52.6), three-point field goal percentage (40.7) and free throws made (90). Varnado finished third on the team in total blocks (23) and third in total assists (49).

The 29-year old was not drafted during the 2019 NBA Draft, but became a veteran international player. He recently played for Israel’s Bnei Penlink Herzliya, where he normed 9.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

In 2025, Varnado was tapped by the Bolts as their import in the Basketball Champions League Asia. He averaged 19.7 points and 10.0 rebounds as he helped the team reach the quarterfinals, where they ultimately bowed to eventual bronze medalists XAC Broncos of Mongolia, 83-78.

Macau Is Back In The PBA

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 25 Jun 2026 10:57:55 +0000

There will be a guest team in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, and it will be the Macau Black Knights again. Only this time, Macau will go by the moniker Giant Pandas as they hope to improve on their performance from the midseason tourney.

The Giant Pandas — will be bannered by the same core of Jenning Leung, Damian Chong Qui, Phoenix Shackelford, and Ray Cao. However, Leung, who grew up in Laguna here in the Philippines, will be available only in August, according to veteran scribe Quinito Henson, as he has a prior commitment to play in another league.

That makes the addition of guard Kobey Lam quite timely. Lam, one of the standout guards of former PBA Commissioner’s Cup guest team Bay Area Dragons, will be reinforcing the Giant Pandas and will add much‑needed firepower to a team that often faltered late in games last conference. The 6‑foot‑3 guard helped the Dragons reach the Finals in their lone conference, losing to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in seven games.

Lam won’t be the only reinforcement for the Giant Pandas, as Macau has brought in the well‑traveled De’Vondre Perry as the team’s import.

Perry starred for the Temple University Owls from 2017 to 2021 before transferring to the University of Albany for a fifth year in the US NCAA. He went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft and has since embarked on an eventful international career highlighted by stints in Belgium and the Dominican Republic. Most of his international career, though, has been spent in Germany’s ProA League, where he initially suited up for the Artland Dragons.

In his most recent stint in Germany, Perry played for the SBB Baskets Wolmirstedt and put up 12.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

The addition of a budding star in Lam and an in‑his‑prime reinforcement should make the Giant Pandas a lot more competitive this time around. On paper, in fact, they should be better than last conference’s squad that began with a five‑game losing streak and finished at 3‑9.

However, losing Leung to start the tournament could throw a fork into the Giant Pandas’ plan of gaining redemption. After all, he was arguably the team’s second‑best player in the Commissioner’s Cup, putting up 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 2.3 steals.

Even so, Macau will be coming into the season‑ending tourney with some confidence, as it went 3‑4 last conference after that nightmarish 0‑5 start. With a better idea of the Philippine brand of hoops, hopefully a more productive import, and a battle‑tested guard coming in, the Giant Pandas appear poised nonetheless to do better in their second PBA go‑round.

The Bolts Is Bringing Back Jordon Varnado

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 24 Jun 2026 09:30:28 +0000

The Meralco Bolts are a familiar face next conference after they decided to get Jordon Varnado back as their import for the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.

If the name rings a bell, it’s because Varnado has already played for the Bolts—but in the Basketball Champions League Asia in 2025. The announcement came through the team’s official social media channels last 22 June.

Varnado, a 29-year-old Tennessee native, gave a good account of himself in his Meralco stint in Dubai, putting up 19.7 points and 10.0 rebounds across three games. He also helped lead the Bolts to the quarterfinals before bowing to eventual bronze medalists XAC Broncos of Mongolia in a close 83-78 loss.

That means Varnado is already familiar with the inner workings at Meralco, and that familiarity with the coaching staff, the system, and the personnel is precisely the kind of edge the Bolts are banking on in bringing in the explosive American.

Varnado, listed at 6-foot-7, most recently played for Bnei Peinklink Herzliya in Israel, keeping himself sharp internationally before the Governors’ Cup call came. He steps into a Meralco frontline that needs reinforcement if the Bolts are going to finally break through the semifinal ceiling that has defined their season.

Varnado’s signing is the latest in what is becoming a fully formed import landscape for the season-ending conference. The Blackwater Bossing have confirmed the arrival of 2024 Indonesian Basketball League (IBL) MVP Kentrell Barkley, who is expected to touch down next week. Phoenix is going with former NBA pro BJ Johnson.

The Magnolia Hotshots tabbed KJ Buffen off a strong IBL stint. The San Miguel Beermen landed George King, who previously suited up for the Bossing. The TNT Tropang 5G have opted for Darius Days, while the Phoenix Fuel Masters flew in BJ Johnson. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, of course, is bringing back Justin Brownlee for another tour of duty.

The Governors’ Cup has not even started, and the import arms race is already well underway. Meralco has gone with experience and familiarity. Whether Varnado can carry the Bolts past the semis and into the Finals for the first time is the question the season-ending conference will answer.

Bolts 95, TnT 103

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 30 May 2026 02:17:25 +0000

Chris McCullough lived up his promise of a better performance by scoring 42 points in lifting TNT to a 103-95 win and a 3-2 lead in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals series last 29 May at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The points were 18 more than what McCullough produced in his first game back and he highlighted it all up with four straight baskets – off back-to-back triples, a spin move and a jumper – in a stirring one-man show that gave the Tropang 5G a 98-91 lead.

Jordan Heading then took TNT home with five straight points that made it a 103-93 count and gave the team the chance to close out the best-of-seven series with another win Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

Undeniably, said opportunity was largely made possible by McCullough, who vowed after his first game back, a 90-101 loss in Game 4 last Wednesday when he shot just 7-of-22 from the field, that: "Once I get going, it will be scary."

"Yeah, I said that," admitted McCullough, who went 16-of-28 from the floor this time while adding 11 rebounds.

"I just needed to get my legs under me. I had two weeks off from playing basketball so I’m just happy to be back, happy to be playing."

TNT coach Chot Reyes said another key factor is his players limiting their turnovers, unlike in Game 4 when they committed 15 miscues which the Bolts fully exploited.

"Coming into this game our gameplan was to get good shots because the last game we had so many turnovers, we gave up 26 points off turnovers," related Reyes.

"So, you cannot defend a turnover, that’s very hard. For us, to help our defense we had to get good shots. That means we’re getting shots, we’re not turning the ball over. We did not make everything, but the key was, if we were able to get good shots we’d prevent Meralco from running the fastbreak where they’re very deadly."

Aside from just 11 turnovers this time around, the Tropa did shoot the ball better with a 35-of-72 clip while displaying better ball movement for a series-high 23 assists that also helped take them past the century mark for the first time in the duel.

Patrick Gardner also did a little better in his second game for Meralco by finishing with 25 points and 12 rebounds. But he got into foul trouble anew and even had to sit out a five-minute stretch in the fourth period after committing his fourth and fifth fouls just seconds apart.

Behind Cliff Hodge, the Bolts tried to hang on and kept within 85-88 before McCullough’s explosion pulled the game truly beyond reach.

Gardner Hopes To Adjust Fast With The Bolts

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 28 May 2026 16:12:04 +0000

New Bolts import Patrick Gardner is here and is determined to write a happier ending, after a heartbreaking finish in the Japanese B.League Division 2 Finals over a week ago.

Gardner and the Fukushima Firebonds got swept by the Kobe Storks in the B.League Division 2 Finals last 17 May, losing both the championship and the chance to be promoted to Division 1.

But when a door opened for him to play for the PBA, he grabbed the opportunity to join the Meralco Bolts in the Season 50 Commissioner's Cup semifinals.

The 26-year-old big man was brought in to replace Marvin Jones, following Meralco's loss to an all-Filipino TNT Tropang 5G squad last 24 May.

"This kind of happened very quick, and I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to play in a country like this with such big basketball fans, and I jumped on it," Gardner told reporters after the 101-90 win of Meralco.

"Well, I was expecting to go into my off season, and then like I was taking a rest for a week, and then I got the call for this opportunity, and yeah, I started to get back into the gym," he added.

The American-Egyptian big man said the tough loss in Japan is part of his motivation in joining Meralco in the middle of the semifinals. "I don't want to lose in the championship again ... I still have the hunger," he shared.

But Gardner's debut for Meralco in Game 4 last 27 May was not the first outing he imagined, as he fouled out with 03:26 left in the game.

The former NBA G League player still contributed in the win, finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in his first game in the PBA and with the Bolts.

"I'm just happy we won the game, ultimately. Like, it's my first game here, so ultimately I think that was most important. But, yeah, I think I had a good game. Had six fouls, so that wasn't good, but it's a learning curve. So I'm just here to keep learning and getting better," he shared.

Meralco head coach Luigi Trillo lauded Gardner for his performance despite being with the team for only a short period of time and playing through cramps.

"Kitang-kita mo naman 'yung ginawa niya. He's kalmado. He makes the right decisions. I think the one thing that he has is he can shoot the ball. So kailangan lang bantayan, he can make shots from the outside," he said.

"He's fresh from the Japanese Division 2. He just played, I think, in the finals. So, 10 days off. Pero 'yun nga sinasabi niya, palagi 'pag first game of the season kahit saan na-ccramps daw siya," Trillo added.

Gardner has been in the country in the past with the Egyptian men's national basketball team in the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023.

"It's definitely an adjustment compared to Japan or G League or college or anything. But the fans are great. I mean, right when we walked on the court, it was just a full crowd, so, yeah, it was nice," he shared.

With only a limited time to prepare and adapt to Meralco's system, Gardner admits he would have wanted to have more practices and games with the team.

"Of course, you'd want to play with the team the whole season, but this is what professional basketball is like, and you always just got to be ready for the next opportunity and try to gel as best you can in a short time frame," he explained.

Even if he missed out on the gold in Japan, Gardner is using the past heartbreak to help light the spark for the Bolts in their Commissioner's Cup campaign.

"I'm here to do what the team wants, so whatever they need me to do, I want to be able to adjust for them and ultimately try to win the championship," he said.

What Patrick Gardner Can Bring To The Bolt's Table?

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 28 May 2026 04:33:13 +0000

After an embarassing Game 3 loss to the Tropang 5G, the Meralco Bolts pulled the plug on Marvin Jones and replaced him with Patick Gardner before the opening of Game 4 of their best-of-seven semifinals series in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner's Cup last 27 May.

Jones, who played for Meralco since the elimination round, posted only 22 points, 15 rebounds, and three assists in their Game 3 loss. More importantly, he failed to dominate an import-less team.

Meanwhile, Gardner is a 6-foot-11 American-Egyptian center that had several stints abroad, including stops in the Japan B. League and Egypt's national team.

Born on 16 June 1999, Gardner is considered as a skilled stretch-center known for his elite shooting, high basketball IQ, and smooth offensive versatility. He gained international prominence representing the Egyptian National Team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and has played professionally in the NBA G League.

On defense, Gardner knows where to be and is functional enough. He rarely commits fouls and has quick hands, even while retreating. His block numbers in previous tournaments were inflated by his size, but he improved a lot as a help defender throughout last year. That said if he gets isolated down low by a good post scorer, then it might put him in an uneasy predicament.

While he has quick hands and functional positioning, adding more lower-body strength to hold his ground in the paint and improving lateral quickness on switches remain key focal points for his physical development. This is why it is important for Cliff Hdge, Jayvee Mocon and Brandon Bates to complement his abilities and time their switches very well.

His biggest asset, though, is his 3-pt shooting whch is frequently hovering near or above 40 percent. He is a pick-and-pop threat with his ability to space the floor. He can force opposing centers to step out of the paint, creating driving lanes for the Meralco guards. Gardner also operates very well as a passer out of the high post and can effectively attack closeouts if defenders over-commit to his shot.

In the Game 4 101-90 win against Tropang 5G, Gardner scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. He went 3 of 6 from long-distance for 50 percent shooting clip. This is scary because he has yet to adjust to the Bolt's type of play. Once he has, those numbers will only go up.

Bolts 101, TNT 90

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 28 May 2026 02:37:17 +0000

Meralco Bolts wants its turn to come up with a dagger of a shot this time around.

CJ Cansino redeemed himself from a costly missed shot in the last game by booming in a clutch four-pointer that helped point the Bolts to a 101-90 win over TNT last 27 May that tied up their PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals series at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Cansino more than made up for his missed drive that led to a 75-77 loss last 24 May with what proved to be the game’s biggest shot pulling Meralco away from a 83-90 count, with still 1:21 to go.

The 4-pointer also seemed to have taken the wind out of the Tropang 5G’s sails as they lapsed into a series of errors in their final thrusts while Javee Mocon and Cliff Hodge sealed the scoring that leveled the best-of-seven series at two games apiece.

Cansino wound up with 17 points to complement the 20-point, 13-rebound effort of new import Patrick Gardner before the latter fouled out with the Bolts hanging on to a shaky 93-87 lead, still 3:26 left in the game.

"Siguro mas natuto lang kami sa past games namin and ‘yung composure namin mas kailangan pa naming diinan pa kasi ganu’n palagi nagiging problema namin, eh," said Cansino, who had a pre-game average of just 8.3 points.

"Masaya kami na hindi nangyari iyon ngayon and hopefully madala namin iyong confidence na ibinigay ng game na ito sa mga next games pa."

Meralco coach Luigi Trillo was also pleased with his team maintaining its composure in the endgame. "We had to stay positive and the guys pulled through eventually in the fourth," he said.

"They found their rhythm there even with Patrick fouling out. I thought we did a good job as a team keeping our poise not only on offense but defense as well."

Trillo also lauded Gardner’s initial overall performance despite the 7-foot American-Egyptian suffering cramps that forced a brief sidelining in the third period. "Pat had cramps today but he was pretty solid," he noted.

"He does the right thing on the court. He makes the right decisions. But it wasn’t just Pat. I thought everybody came to play, especially when he fouled out. We had Javee and Cliff hold the fort."

TNT also paraded a new import in Chris McCullough, who marked his return to the league with a gamehigh 24 points on top of nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Jordan Heading added 15 points and Rogoer Pogoy and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser chipped in 14 points apoece for TNT, but Calvin Oftana only managed 10 points on just eight attempts from the floor, his rhythm clearly affected by early foul trouble.

McCullough also got saddled by fouls early but came alive in the second half with 17 of his points and helping TNT, which trailed by as much as 15-28 early, even take a 67-64 lead.

Bolts 105, Magnolia 102

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 17 May 2026 03:46:45 +0000

Bong Quinto made the shots that mattered that helped Meralco pull off a 105-102 overtime victory over Magnolia last 16 May at the Ynares Center in Antipolo and into the semifinals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Quinto scored eight of his 11 points in the extension, including two charity splits that made it a 105-101 count, only 5.4 ticks to go, and eventually enabled the Bolts to withstand a gallant effort from the Hotshots’ Jerom Lastimosa.

After bouncing back from an 89-95 loss in the quarterfinals duel last Wednesday, Meralco advances to the best-of-seven semis where it will take on TNT who prevailed against NLEX in the second game.

Coach Luigi Trillo first commended Magnolia’s gritty stand in trying to overcome a twice-to-win handicap before lauding his own team for continuing to respond to challenges he and active consultant Nenad Vucinic hurled at them.

"I think this our ninth conference with coach Nenad. We made the semis now, back-to-back. I think of those nine conferences we made the quarterfinals every time so it’s a testament to, you know, the way the boys are responding," said Trillo.

"He told the guys at the half that we’re right there, we needed to clean some things up, and eventually these guys pulled through. Gutted it out and found a way," added Trillo.

Marvin Jones led Meralco with 28 points and nine rebounds with Chris Newsome adding 18 points and five dimes and CJ Cansino and Cliff Hodge chipping in 14 and 11 markers, respectively.

Also helping Meralco’s cause was Magnolia import Clint Chapman getting into foul trouble that forced him on the bench for the last 6:13 of the third period before eventually fouling out with still 4:21 left in regulation after piling up 26 points and four rebounds.

Despite that, the Hotshots continued to hang tough with Lastimosa taking over the most before finishing with a career-high 28 points.

Mark Barroca was the lone other Hotshot in double digits with 22 points despite a bruise and welt under his left eye caused by a driving Hodge’s knee just 1:41 into the game.

A nit under the weather was Zav Lucero, limiting him to just four points, but Lastimosa readily picked up the scoring slack and even knotting the count at 92-all with a layup off a baseline drive and OT was forced when Newsome missed the last two attempts of regulation.

Lastimosa continued leading the way in the extra period with all 10 of Magnolia’s points, with his charity split putting the Hotshots within 101-102, still 23.5 ticks left.

Bolts 76, Magnolia 93

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Mon, 11 May 2026 03:09:00 +0000

Magnolia now has momentum really built up going to the playoffs following a 93-76 win over Meralco last 10 May in a match winding up their PBA Commissioner’s Cup elimination campaign at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Clinton Chapman scored 19 points while Paul Lee boomed in a four-pointer and a triple that sparked a big second quarter breakaway that fueled the Hotshots’ surge to as much as two 21-point leads, the last 51-30.

Magnolia stumbled a bit in the third period that enabled Meralco enough of an impetus to whittle the deficit to single digits and even threaten at 71-80, still 6:22 to go.

Chapman and Javi Gomez de Liano, however, were there to lead a balanced finishing kick by the Hotshots as they went on to notch a third straight win for a 7-5 record overall and a lock on No. 5.

"The past three games, actually, we’ve been really on a playoff mentality already. I challenged the players, I challenged my team, that these kind of games eto ‘yung magbibigay sa amin ng chance going to the next level," said Magnolia coach LA Tenorio.

"Not necessarily going to the semis ... moving forward. We have a goal as a team so I think we are on the right track na gusto namin, whether this conference or next conference. You never know," added Tenorio.

"But what I really like about my team right now is how they responded to that challenge. They responded really well, not only in the games but in practice. They’re really locked in, they’re buying into the system na gusto kong iparating sa team. Iyon ang maganda sa team na ito."

The eliminations officially wind after Barangay Ginebra beat TNT in the second match. Meralco is at number 4 and will have a twice-to-beat advantage against Magnolia when they meet this Wednesday.

Is Calvin Oftana Headed To The Korean League?

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Fri, 17 Apr 2026 11:48:00 +0000

Several South Korean media and vloggers have recently posted cryptic contents about the 6-foot-5 TNT star guard and a possible transfer to the Korean Basketball League via the Suwon KT Sonicboom.

Calvin Oftana’s agent, PJ Pilares, confirmed the aggressive pursuit of KT Sonicboom that he said started even before the sweet-shooting former San Beda Red Lion was traded by NLEX to the Tropang 5G two years ago.

"Yes, they are very, very aggressive in [trying to] acquire him. Not just KT Sonic Boom, but we have been receiving feelers," Pilares told SPIN.ph.

Oftana, one of the key local pieces for the Tropang 5G, remains under contract with the PBA franchise until 2027, making any potential move abroad subject to team approval and existing league rules.

"Unfortunately, we can’t talk to then yet," he said. "We have a contract with TNT until December 2027. So, we can’t negotiate with them yet."

As per Spin.ph, Pilares believes all the noise about Oftana’s supposed move to KT Sonicboom, which had Dave Ildefonso and later JD Cagulangan as Asian quota imports, was a result of misconceptions about his TNT contract by some in the Korean media.

"Because, when we first talked to the Koreans, we were on our way to TNT. And little do they know, we signed a two-year extension upon our transfer to TNT. So he is under contract until the end of 2027," Pilares declared.

But once his contract expires, will a Korean transfer be in the cards for Oftana?

"Actually, we were really looking at the offer before. But Calvin’s wife intervened. She is a doctor and she wanted to practice here. So Calvin can’t leave him for a tour of duty abroad," he said.

I had a dream last night that Calvin Oftana signed a 2+1 year contract with KT SonicBoom club for a total of USD$800K.#CalvinOftana #캘빈오프타나 #KBL pic.twitter.com/mGesbYlW9G

"Snow" Badua Arrested For Cyber Libel

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Tue, 14 Apr 2026 06:27:00 +0000

Operatives of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group arrested a sports journalist in Quezon City for cyber libel, the CIDG reported last 13 April.

Edmund "Snow" Badua was nabbed at around 2 P.M. last 10 April at his residence in Napocor Village, Barangay Tandang Sora, based on a warrant issued by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

The case stemmed from a complaint filed by PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, said CIDG Detection and Special Operations Unit chief Lt. Col. Gene Licud in a press briefing on Monday afternoon.

Badua was brought to the CIDG headquarters at Camp Crame after his arrest and was presented to the court on Monday, said Licud.

Badua posted a bail of PhP 30,000 and procedures, including medical examination, were ongoing as of Monday afternoon before his release from detention.

"I think he already posted bail ... believe there is already a release order (from the court) so we have to subject him to examination before we release him," said Licud.

In a statement, the CIDG said Badua supposedly committed the crime from April to June this year.

The CIDG said Badua "allegedly maliciously exhibited and circulated and/or caused to exhibit and circulate through and with the use of information and communication technologies malicious imputations against the PBA commissioner."

The CIDG leadership commended Licud and his men for the arrest of Badua, which it said underscores the CIDG’s "commitment to conducting manhunt operations to all accused to help victims attain the justice they deserve."

"The CIDG assures the public that it is relentless in tracking down and accounting for all criminals, most wanted persons, and fugitives across the country- without fear or favor," the CIDG added.

Where Is SMB's Justin Patton?

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 12 Apr 2026 10:56:00 +0000

For those who are wondering why the San Miguel Beermen are playing without an import against Magnolia today, 12 April (Sunday) in the PBA 50th Season Commissioner’s Cup eliminations, there are no clear answers.

The San Miguel has not divulged any details on why Justin Patton was not spotted during the shootaround and pregame warm-ups minutes before tip-off against the Hotshots.

An insider revealed that Patton didn’t attend Saturday’s practice and can’t be contacted by the team.

As of game time, Patton has not arrived and the Beermen are playing all-Filipino in a crucial game for playoff positioning.

Sports5 later reported that Patton hasn't shown up in practice for the past three days due to an "illness."

Still, San Miguel officials expressed dismay that their import didn't show up during the warm-ups.

Patton is coming off a disappointing performance last 8 April when he shot 5-of-13 from the field, scoring just 12 points in a 116-112 loss to Rain or Shine.

He picked up four quick fouls early and was in and out of the bench the rest of the game, his body language growing worse after every minute he spent on the bench.

A replacement for the ineffective Marcus Lee, the seven-foot Patton also missed a four-point shot and a three-point attempt at the height of an SMB comeback.

Bolts 115, Black Knights 110

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 12 Apr 2026 09:47:00 +0000

The Meralco Bolts is ttrying to stack up some wins wight and they are on track after Marvin Jones and CJ Cansino led the them past the Black Knights in a grind-out game, 115-110. The win allowed the Bolts to keep the solo second place in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last 11 April.

Jones piled up 32 points and 14 rebounds while Cansino came through with 23 markers, seven boards plus a crucial block leading to a game-clinching layup by Jansen Rios as the Bolts scored a third straight win and fifth overall in six outings.

Jason Brickman chipped in 13 while Chris Newsome added 11 for the Bolts who bolted out of a two-way tie at second with the NLEX Road Warriors and improved their position in the race for the Top Four and a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.

"You give credit to them (Macau), they hang in there as they made their treys. But at the end of the game, our guys pulled through and I can’t be prouder of them," said Meralco coach Luigi Trillo in lauding his guys’ effort.

The Bolts held their ground with their own gallant stand and compounded Macau’s woes in handing them a sixth loss in as many games in their guest stint in the PBA midseason tourney.

Macau still couldn’t snap out of a rut even with new coach Marcus Elliot who took over from Garret Kelly.

But the Bolts had to grind it out, banking on a 6-1 closing run to take home the win and stay right behind the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (6-0).

Cansino shattered the 109-all deadlock on a drive to the basket in heavy traffic, Jones stretched the lead to 113-100 on a basket from close range then Cansino all but wrapped up the win in blocking a shot by Phoenix Shackelford.

"I’m just pushing myself," said Jones on his yet another solid outing, helping the Bolts sustain their rhythm and winnings ways.

Macau counterpart Tony Mitchell had 16 points and 14 rebounds as Shackelford paced Macau with 29 markers, including 4-of-5 three-pointers.

Buried deeper to a 0-6 hole, Macau is now pressed to do good in its last six outings if it’s to make the playoffs. The Black Knights have NLEX, Titan Ultra, TNT, Blackwater, Terrafirma and Phoenix Super LPG as last six assignments in the elims.

Who Is Expected To Pick First In The Loaded 2027 PBA Draft?

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 11 Apr 2026 08:28:00 +0000

As a result of the PBA’s golden anniversary, the current season is expected to extend to at least 15 months. This means that there will be no PBA draft in 2026. The next event was scheduled to January 2027, which is expected to be the biggest and richest draft in years.

The PBA had asked if the UAAP’s graduating players, including one-and-dones, could apply for this year’s draft but was turned down even with the qualification that those picked would finish their varsity obligations before crossing over.

It ony meant one thing. The likes of Michael Phillips, Gerry Abadiano, Nic Cabanero, Jake Figueroa, John Abate, Ced Manzano, Dom Escobar, Kymani Lani, Forthsky Padrigao, Harold Alarcon and Josh Lazaro will wait one year before joining the draft.

Since the next draft is set after the UAAP’s 89th season, the list of eligibles will bulge with the addition of blue-chippers Mason Amos, Jacob Cortez and Kean Baclaan. Then, there are Fil-foreigners like DJ Fenner, CJ Lane, Robin Duncan and Remy Martin, MPBL players, including Raven Gonzales, and NCAA stars like Clint Escamis waiting in the wings.

The big question is with so many talents available, who will be the first overall pick in 2027?

Right now, the consensus is that the Barangay Ginebra has the inside track after they traded for Terrafirma’s first choice, by giving up Maverick Ahanmisi and Aljon Mariano in exchange. It’s more than likely Terrafirma will end up at the cellar again this season and Barangay Ginebra getting the first overall slot.

Terrafirma remains in the market for sale but its value has diminished with the abdication of its first pick. Still, it’s a PBA franchise and a more attractive investment than an expansion option which is costlier.

The PBA’s Technical Committee, made up of four members, approved the trade on a unanimous vote. PBA commissioner Willie Marcial had nothing to do with the vote and has made it a point not to interfere with decisions of the independent committee. Ahanmisi had asked for a trade and his partnership with brother Jerrick was a perfect seal to deal with Terrafirma.

The timing of the next PBA draft couldn’t be more felicitous. The UAAP, NCAA and MPBL seasons will be over by then, making those eligible from the three leagues available to transfer. Overseas players who’ve never applied for the draft will have several months to think whether or not to enlist.

Thirdy Ravena would be a prime candidate. Of course, most will opt to stay where they are. But imagine how fully loaded the draft would be if even just a few of the overseas players join in.

Again, There Will Be No PBA Draft In 2026

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Fri, 10 Apr 2026 06:16:00 +0000

For those who were not yet aware and expects a PBA Draft this year, the event was moved to January 2027. PBA commissioner Willie Marcial has disclosed that with the 50th season extending to over 15 months, the PBA Board decided to hold the draft after the 2026 UAAP season.

Last 2025, Marcial requested UAAP to allow graduating seniors and one-and-done players to apply for the recent draft on condition they finish their varsity eligibility before turning pro. UAAP, however, turned it down. With the adjustment of the draft schedule, the transition of UAAP players to PBA is locked in. NCAA isn’t affected by the new schedule as it has allowed graduating players to enter the draft.

During the PBA Board of Governors planning in las vegas last September 2025, Marcial said a major rule change was also approved regarding the last two minutes of every quarter.

Previously, the rule was in the last two minutes of the fourth period or OT, a team enters the penalty on the second foul, regardless of whether it has accumulated the usual limit of five or not. Under the new rule, this will be in effect in the last two minutes of each quarter.

"Sa first three quarters, napansin namin na in the last minute or last few seconds na wala pa sa limit, sunud-sunod ang fouls para lang matigil ang opensa," said Marcial. "Ngayon, 'di na pwede 'yan."

Marcial said several other rule changes were discussed at the planning meeting, particularly on how to align more with FIBA rules.

Newly-designed Magnolia governor Jason Webb, a former PBA player and coach, was assigned to study the possible rule changes, including the shift from 12-minute to 10-minute quarters and eliminating jump balls for possession arrows. "Pagaaralan namin," said Marcial. "'Yung pag-bawas ng minutes per quarter, eight minutes ang mawawala sa game at apektado mga TV advertisers. 'Yung possession arrows, pagaaralan din namin at mayroon mga situations na baka ‘di makatulong sa flow ng game.'"

Bolts 110, Tropang 5G 106

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 08 Apr 2026 00:22:00 +0000

It was a statement game that nearly slipped away – before Meralco Bolts steadied itself just in time.

The Bolts flirted with disaster after enjoying a 20-point lead, but survived, hacking out a 110-106 win over the TNT Tropang 5G in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last 7 April.

"They (TNT) hung around. We’re up by 12 in the last five minutes but they persevered. But a win is a win, and we take it," said Meralco coach Luigi Trillo on their escape that gave them a piece of second place with NLEX at 4-1, behind unbeaten Rain or Shine (4-0).

"We gave them 51 free throws, and that’s a concern. But at the end of the day, it’s a W, and that’s what important," added Trillo as they survived TNT’s fourth-quarter storm and handed the Tropang 5G a second loss against the same number of wins.

CJ Cansino played the fireman’s role and took the Best Player of the Game honors with 19 points, four rebounds and the same number of assists.

"(A key) siguro yung experience namin in the last series. Grabe ang sakit, at ayaw namin maulit. Yung mga nangyari, dala namin sa next game," said Cansino, still feeling the heartbreak of their 1-4 loss to the Tropang 5G in the Philippine Cup semis.

Marvin Jones put up a decent stand against TNT’s touted import Bol Bol, with the Meralco reinforcement producing 29 points and 12 rebounds.

Bol had almost the same numbers with 28 markers and 12 rebounds but had a crucial lapse and missed their last attempt at an equalizer.

TNT’s 35-point fourth-quarter explosion went down the drain as the Tropang 5G saw their two-game run halted by the Bolts.

An RR Pogoy three, and two free throws each from Rey Nambatac and Jordan Heading made it a 107-105 game but Pogoy airballed a three, and Bol's kick-out pass went straight to Chris Newsome, who knocked down two free throws for 109-105 lead.

Bol was fouled with Meralco in penalty but only made one free throw, and missed that contested four-point shot in TNT's final few offensive plays. He went 9-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Gilas 3X3 On A Must-Win Situation

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 05 Apr 2026 01:48:00 +0000

Jerrick Ahanmisi caught fire as Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 stayed alive and advanced to the quarterfinals, outlasting Chinese Taipei, 21-13, in the Fiba 3×3 Asia Cup on 4 April in Singapore.

Facing a must-win situation after a loss to top seed Mongolia earlier, Ahanmisi erupted for 10 straight points, including four deuces, to give Gilas a comfortable 16-10 lead.

Ralph Cu and Chris Koon stretched the lead to 20-11 before Ahanmisi delivered the game-winning putback as Gilas Pilipinas finished Pool A with a 1-1 record.

The Terrafirma Dyip rising star finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Koon chipped in five points. Cu had three points and six rebounds, while Sean Alter added two.

Gilas battles South Korea, which topped Pool C, on Easter Sunday.

The Philippines suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Mongolia, 19-21, after blowing an 18-15 lead.

Chinkhutag Munkh-Ulzii sparked Mongolia’s 6-1 rally with back-to-back two-pointers. Koon and Cu tried to win the game but missed their two-point attempts before Ganbaatar Nyamdorj scored the last two points to complete the comeback.

Cu had eight points, while Koon finished with seven points.

Maverick Ahanmisi Challenges "K Showtime"

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 04 Apr 2026 05:14:00 +0000

Maverick Ahanmisi pushed back against what he believes as a blatant disrespect toward Filipino basketball, defending the culture amid viral street games involving foreign content creator "K Showtime."

Ahanmisi said physical play has always been part of the local game but drew the line at actions he believes cross into disrespect.

"It’s rugged. It’s rough. That’s not going to change," he said. "Tough, hard-nosed play ... that’s fine. But it crosses the line when you start throwing the basketball at people’s heads, calling them stupid."

The Terrafirma guard also took issue with remarks questioning the ability of Filipino players.

"You said you’ve never found a Filipino who could guard you? Well, guess what—I’m Filipino. Come play me one-on-one," Ahanmisi said.

He stressed that many of the players featured in such content come from humble backgrounds, making respect even more important.

"You’re playing with kids who barely even have enough money to buy shoes ... some are playing in flip-flops, some are playing barefoot," he said.

Ahanmisi also addressed questions about his identity, reaffirming his connection to the local basketball culture.

"You can say whatever you want about me ... but I’ve lived in the Philippines for almost half my life. Growing up, all I knew was Filipino basketball," he said.

He challenged critics to face players who truly represent the country’s grassroots level.

"I’d like to see you play somebody who’s really Filipino and can really hoop and see if you can keep that same energy," he added.

Was There A Violation In The Converge Inbound Against Ginebra?

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Fri, 03 Apr 2026 01:36:00 +0000

Several online reactions and criticisms came pouring out after Converge FiberXers’ lost to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 93-99, last 29 March. Most are divided over a possible inbound violation late in the game involving Coverge's Alec Stockton and Ginebra's Scottie Thompson.

Clips circulating on social media showed that with 52 seconds remaining and Converge trailing by two, Thompson appeared to disrupt the inbound pass while the ball was still in Stockton’s hands. The error led to Justin Brownlee's teardrop shot for a more confortable 97-93 Ginebra lead.

Some fans pointed to standard rules prohibiting defenders from breaking the boundary plane before the ball is released, while others argued the play may have been influenced by camera angle and timing.

According to NBA rules:

"Defenders in basketball must stay on the court during an inbounds pass, avoiding breaking the plane of the boundary line to interfere with the passer. A defender can jump or move to disrupt passing lanes but must avoid physical contact like reaching across the line, which can cause a technical foul."

Despite the online debate, Stockton remained composed after the game. "I don’t really let it affect me ... I come home to my kids, my family," he said.

He added that his focus remains on building chemistry with his teammates and continuing to compete.

Amid the noise, Converge Head Coach Delta Pineda stood firmly behind his guard, emphasizing trust and development over criticism.

"'Wag nating anuhin ‘yung mga mistakes ng mga bata… lahat naman nagkakamali," Pineda said.

He stressed that the team continues to build confidence in its players, especially in pressure situations.

"Bini-build ko ‘yung confidence ... ayaw naming tingnan ‘yung ganung sitwasyon," he added.

Pineda also cited fatigue and limited rotation as factors, noting the heavy minutes carried by his players late in games.
