I'm always happy when spring come to northwestern Pennsylvania! We wait so long!

I found a few nice little surprises while tidying up the lawn.

These crocus are sweetly nestled at the base of my favorite tree. Unfortunately facing away from the house, so I didn't know they were there!

With all the pretties popping up outside I had to pretty up my kitchen! I changed out my fall and winter vintage tablecloths in my cabinet to my spring linens. What fun!

I also changed out my tea towel frame. I know I always say each Wilendur is my favorite, but I think this one really is! But then again, spring is my favorite season!

I put out the tablecloth that matches my towel. It comes in a few colorways. But the blue hyacinths are so pretty! The colors really show off the "new" vaseline glass candle holders my husband found at an estate sale last weekend.

St. Patrick's Day "Startex" Vintage Tablecloth

Here's a fun vintage tablecloth from my collection. My Startex shamrock! It's not perfect and probably a bit faded, but I just love it. Bring on the luck o' the Irish!

Another thing I love to collect is Post 86 Fiestaware. I was thrilled to get this St. Patrick's day set with Shamrock. It's not a great match with my vintage tablecloth, but I enjoy them so very much! I think it goes better with the older St. Patrick's Day design on the Seamist color. But no plates were made.

This Startex shamrock tablecloth came in red too. Also in my collection. Much brighter in comparison to my green.

I think my little leprechaun is really Santa Claus dressed up to go out for green beer!

Check out how cute the flowers are I picked up a Walmart! Extra luck for us Irish girls!

Happy Valentine's Day!

My Valentine's Day table features a gorgeous Leacock "Hearts & Flowers" tablecloth that I purchased from fellow collector and good friend, Leslie at Uncle Bunks Trunk. I already had this tablecloth in the blue colorway, but when I saw it in in red, I had to add it to my collection!

It's perfect with Scarlet and Valentine's fiestaware!

Here it is in the blue colorway.

Tulips & Hearts Vintage Tablecloth

I finally had enough light to take some pictures to share my vintage tablecloth collection with you. As much as I don't like snow, I have to say it brightens a room!

I've always loved this pretty vintage tablecloth and was only able to acquire it recently. It sure is cheerful on a cold winter day when I can only dream of spring!

Pretty blue tulip garlands make heart shapes! Isn't it sweet?

I'm not sure of the maker of this cloth, but if I find out I'll edit this post.

Vintage Tablecloths

As many of you know, I've collected vintage linens, most especially, vintage tablecloths for years. I've amassed a huge collection of these beauties. Unfortunately, I don't use and enjoy them as much as I should. So while I don't like to make New Years resolutions I know I can never keep, I've decided to do my best to use a different tablecloth every week or two. And what better when to keep me motivated then to share them with you?!

Here's my first one of the year. A Broderie. My favorite vintage tablecloth manufacturer second only to Wilendur (my true love).

How cute is this little couple?

Love these charming details. They are like hidden treasures.

And of course this cloth goes great with Fiestaware Lapis.

I can't forget to mention the maid and the butler!

I hope you enjoyed the first one! It was fun to look at everyday on my kitchen table. Now off to pick out next weeks cloth!

A surprise Wilendur find

Those of you who follow me on my blog or on Facebook know I'm a Wilendur fanatic! I've been collecting vintage tablecloths for years and never really expect to find one I haven't seen before.

I picked up this pretty and just LOVED it. Held it up to check for damage and when I didn't see any, I quickly folded it and continued shopping.

Got it home and ask my husband to hold it open so I could admire it fully. He is the one that found the "Wilendure" tag. What a bonus to a tablecloth I already loved!

Crofting is one of the easiest and best ways to get your beloved vintage linens clean!

The quickest thing to do, is a soak in a little Palmolive dish soap, just a drop, and a small amount of OxyClean. Dissolve in hot water and then add cold to make a lukewarm soak.

Soak for a few hours checking for colorfastness of your items.

Rinse and then lay face down or pattern down on the grass in the sun. Keep it wet! Use your sprinkler or bring a bucket and dunk the linens to re-wet them.

By afternoon all those pesky yellow spots and age yellowing should be gone. Sometimes it takes two days of crofting, but more often then not just a day will do.

A quick hand wash and on the clothes line they go!

I do have other tricks of the trade I'll share at another time, but that's the quickest, safest, and most mild approach to cleaning vintage linens.

Antique Purple Amethyst Bottles Make Sweet Vases

I've always loved groupings of flowers in old bottles. What fun it was to find these beautiful purple amethyst bottles! And lucky I just have a lot of purple flowers blooming in the garden right now. But really any color flower would look wonderfully cottage chic in these bottles!

Ever wonder how these old antique bottles got their striking color?

Many glassmakers though the centuries have attempted to produce clear, colorless glass. Impurities, especially iron oxide, often resulted in glass that had a hint of green, bluish green, or light aqua color.

It was in the mid 19^th century that manganese dioxide, popularly called “glassmaker’s soap” began to be used by American glass manufacturers as a decolorizer. By including a small amount of manganese in the melt, they could produce glass that appeared virtually colorless.

An interesting characteristic of colorless glass which contains manganese dioxide is the tendency to turn shades of purple when exposed to the rays of the sun or to other ultra-violet sources.

To achieve this beautiful deep purple color, these bottles have been artificially exposed to very high levels of ultra-violet light. The same light that is used in the food industry for food safety. Natural sunlight would probably never achieve these amazing shade of amethyst and purple. If it could, it would take decades of continuous sunlight exposure.

I have to share with you one of the best new products I've come across on a long time!

ReCaps for Mason Jars!

My daughter and I had been talking about how much healthier is it is to store and use food from glass instead of plastic. She commented that we have a lot of Mason jars, but no lids except for canning lids. I looked at numerous stores and couldn't find any solid lids.

Then a few short weeks later, I was watching our local news segment, Made in America, Made Right Here. Not only was there actually something that would work for us, but it was made right here in my home town!

I ordered the ReCap pour lids and the pump for soap. It's been LOVE at first try! I have almost eliminated the need to buy bottled water! I just use a filtered water pitcher and my new "vintage" Mason jars and the ReCaps. I've only purchased one case of water since December. I'm sure they have more then paid for themselves already. There are many more uses, but this is by far my favorite.

The fun part is I found new blue Mason jars and also green. Just waiting for pink!

Antique Bottles!

On a recent trip, I found tons of these wonderful antique bottles! My mind went wild with ideas for their use. First I thought they would be perfect for little sprigs of flowers. And as you can see they are! They have two nice flat sides so they would be easy to repurpose. A vintage decal or perfume bottle label, some sparkle and some Mod Podge ~ then old pieces of jewelry and ribbon and it's a gorgeous vanity bottle! I also thought they would make great favors and/or name plates at a tea or shower. There are tons of pretty stickers available at places like Michaels. Just write in the guests name, add a wild flower stem and wait for the Wows!

Of course I had to know the history. I purchased an entire box of these from sweet couple that were bottle dealers. They said they picked them up from a museum action in Indiana. Apparently boxes of these were donated, but the museum only had room for so many, so the rest went to auction. The dealers believe these date from the late 1800's to the early 1900's and were probably perfume bottles. The museum did not provide them with any information and they are basing this on their years of expertise in the antique bottle business. While I love background information on my finds, I'm not sure it entirely matters as they are WONDERFUL just loaded with cozy cottage charm!!

I'm keeping some and selling the rest at The Pink Rose Cottage. They are available singly or in a group of three. My personal favorite is groups of three. I have three on my kitchen windowsill right now and I'm looking forward to more summer blossoms so I can change them often!

These tablecloths are "no worry" cloths. They aren't perfect, but nice to use and will set a gorgeous table.

I haven't been the best at blogging lately, but today is a very important day. Six years ago today, my daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It's a day that changed her life and our family's life forever.
Six years later it's still a scary disease, but she's learned how to incorporate it into her life. She is away at college studying Sports Medicine and plays on the women's basketball team. It hasn't been easy, it probably never will be, but she handles it with more strength then I ever thought possible.
So on her diagnosis anniversary, I'm so very grateful that she is doing so well. And once again I share the symptoms of this deadly disease. Knowledge is power. It could save a life. ***** Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease. Left untreated, this is a very serious, life threatening disease. Most people are admitted to the hospital at diagnosis with Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) which can lead to coma and then death. So please never brush off these symptoms. A person does not have to have all of them.

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes:

Increased thirst and frequent urination
Extreme hunger
Weight loss
Fatigue
Blurred vision
Sweet smelling breath ***** Love you Corrinne! We're so very proud of you!

The Last of Summers Blessings

Summer passed way too quickly. It always does. Here are some beautiful dahlia. All that is left of my cutting garden.

I no longer save my dahlia tubers as they are readily available every spring with a nice variety of colors. But this little pompom blossom is a keeper!

So after Sandy passes, I'll be out digging in the garden once again!

Until then, and despite the cold and rain, I'll enjoy the last blessings from summer!

Vintage milk bottles make the best vases! They are simple and capture the charm of yesteryear.

Recently added to The Pink Rose Cottage are six pint size bottles. Perfect for sweet little bouquets.

We moved our little picnic inside because of the heat and humidity and threat of storms that probably won’t come.

I used this vintage tablecloth last year too, but it just seems perfect….and it’s a Broderie!

This year even our snacks are red, white, and blue…and healthier!

There are lots of great items including old milk bottles that make terrific vases.

Tons of old canning jars. There are so many uses for these now! Love the old zinc lids. And the glass lids are so charming. I have one of these on our vanity fill with seashells. Love the charm!

Who can resist an old McCoy flower pot? This shade of green is so wonderful and this looks unused.

When we found this great old divided wooden box, it was filled with neatly organized nails. My husband was so happy with the nails. But I was thrilled with the box. A great organizer for many things. What would you use it for?

This old egg basket is so cheery in this buttery yellow. It's great for stacking vintage tablecloths!

This is on my oldest daughter's dresser. She's home from college. Can you guess what her major is? LOL

She loves fresh flowers like her mom. We just differ on how to display them. But I gotta say her idea is pretty cute!
