The first Crusade

For thousands of years, the Holy Land of the Middle East have ruined with blood. The scars of battle fought among the three great religions of the world (Jews, Muslim, Christians) are edge into the earth. But the deepest wound was made by a war between Christians and Muslim the clash of the cross and the crescent. At stake is a tiny strip of land just a few hundred miles long but with the greatest price....Jerusalem.

Of all the cities of the world Jerusalem has the most troubled past and the most troubling future. To the Jews it is the site of the great temple of Herod and Solomon, for the Muslims the place where Mohammad ascended to heaven, to Christians the place where their Messiah was crucified. After his death the word of Jesus Christ took route in Jerusalem, slowly shed almost four century of Roman rule to embrace Christian rule. But in 7th century the Holy city was forcibly seized by a new faith...Islam

400 years later the Christian wanted Jerusalem back, across Europe 60 thousand warriors were gathered preparing themselves for battle. One leader is a veteran warlord Duke Godfrey I of Leuven. He will head up his own army of what it becomes a three years crusade across three thousand miles to reclaim Jerusalem in the name of God. Godfrey is not just a claimed fighter he is also a generous benefactor of the Catholic Church and also eminently religious man. There is good reason why men would risk everything to the journey of a distant land that they might not return. Blighted with famine and racked with pity wars their European home land was a cursed place. They prayed a better life in this world and to the next.

(In nearly all the circles of the world belief had failed the fear of the Lord never prevail among men, justice had perished in the world. Violence held sway among the nations, all virtue had departed and seized to be useless and evil reign).

There is only one organization that potentially can make an end of the anarchy...the Catholic Church. The Catholic faith dominated on the 11th century in Western Europe. The world of the middle ages is the world of deeply concerned with matters of religion. The Church could dissolve the bad of the sin, but lack the political muscle to wash the ill of the entire society. Feuds with the secular ruler of Europe had pushed the Papacy to the sideline.

Until 1088 when the new Pope arrived in Rome Pope Urban II (A man that understood the political and religious current needs of his time and someone who knew to bring things together and channel them into a productive outlets). Pope Urban II need a master plan to put back the church into the political map. The answer to his prayers will come to the form of the desperate call for help from the old rival. In 1095 from the imperial court of Constantinople the political master of the Greek Orthodox Church the Byzantine Emperor Alexios the I Komnenos. The power of Alexios Empire was slipping, the influence of his Orthodox church had once stretched as far the Holy Land of the Middle East but Islam is now the dominant force on the region.

The Turks are recently converted to Islam, they have emerged from the step of Central Asia and sweep down into the Middle East in search of land. Fearsome warriors their armies are tens of thousands, they seized control of the Muslim territory of Persia, Syria and Palestine and finally capture the Holy City of Jerusalem. Then they turned their gaze north and stormed the doorstep of the great Byzantine capital--- Constantinople. By 1095 the Emperor Alexios is desperate to strike back but he couldn't do it alone, he appealed to the Pope in the spirit of Christian brotherhood, to send and elite force of knights to help him keep the Turks at bay. The Pope had now an opportunity to enhance his political power. Pope Urban set to highjack the misfortune of the Byzantine Empire, he would lunch his own Holy war against Islam. A crusade that would strengthen his Papacy and will put Rome in the center of the world political stage. It will allow to increase his authority from the knights of Central Europe, but in the expense of other secular rulers. It will direct the violent knights away from their practices of brutalizing the church in the west, it also roles back the infidel and allow the Christian to reclaim the Holy places.

On November 27, 1095, at the Council of Clermont(town in France) , Pope Urban II delivered a speech that would be repeated throughout Europe, and whose (probably embellished) sentiments would be voiced to the general populace by local clergy. Pope Urban called for a war that would alleviate the suffering and persecution of Eastern Christians and free the Holy Land of Muslim occupation. Urban's speech inspired the widespread preaching of bishops and priests, whose frequent references to the continued persecution of Christ and correlative Biblical passages. The feudal obligation to God spurred thousands of men and women to "take up the cross" and join the crusade. His words seemed it preceded from God and as command from the highest (The cradle of our faith the native land of our Lord and the mother of salvation is now forcefully held by a people without God).

His sermon is cunningly crafted religious spin, spiced with exaggerated tail of Muslim atrocities against Christian pilgrims in the Holy land. It demonized the Turks, and presented the crusade as a apocalyptic war of two faiths. The emotional intensity that day was very high and when the end of the speech was reached. Urban give an appeal, and the people came forward from the crowd to take the cross. They literally striped a piece of cloth and form it as a cross and put it into their left breast over their heart that indicate that they are taking vows to go to the East to rescue their brothers.

Inspired by the possibility of great prestige and honor ten of thousand men and women, families and even whole villagers took vows to join Pope Urban's crusade. But for many there was another attraction the promise of great wealth. But the allure of the unimaginable wealth and the chance to seize lands which was said "the flow of milk and honey" was just the beginning. News soon spread of a greater incentives, Pope Urban took the an unprecedented step he offer to those who pledge their souls to the crusade to have a ticket directly to heaven. The Pope's sermon pushed the boundaries of Christian teaching. In his Holy war a crusade had now the blessing of God to ignore the sixth commandment "thou shall not kill" as long as he was an infidel.

Before the crusade had left Europe Christian fanatic sweep up by the Pope's words anchored to spill blood. To this fundamentalist none Christian is the infidel and the infidel is all around. The pilgrims run up in the spirit of cruelty to the Jews and inflected the most cruelty and slaughter them. They claimed that killing is for the service of Christianity. They attacked them and decapitated many and destroyed their home and synagogue and divided the lotted money among themselves. Across Europe thousands of Jews are massacred in the name of God. Murder and slaughter of the innocent became the hallmark of the first crusade.

In the autumn of 1096 almost a year after the Pope's sermon, armies around France, Germany and Italy set out a three thousand miles march to aid the Christian brothers and liberate the Holy land from the Muslim rule. And the helm of the army of Northern Europe was Duke Godfrey I of Bouillon, he is a very religious man and also a great warrior and the leader. On Godfrey's side is his brother Baldwin the count of Boulogne. Ruthless to the core Baldwin was once destined to priesthood but turned instead to a love of women and war.

To take the cross must be very expensive, people sold their lands just to raise money equivalent to a six years of income just to live with the crusade. It is a whole society moving eastward towards Jerusalem. For almost six months Godfrey's crusader army clambered across thousands of miles over the rivers and mountain ranges of Eastern Europe. They finally joined forces with other Christian army from the south on their rendezvous point the spiritual heart of Eastern Christian community Constantinople (Istanbul of today) which was 900 years ago pursed on the tip of Europe, it is a Christian city.

The jewel of the city is the great Orthodox Christian cathedral of St.Sophia. Covered with mosaic of finished gold it was a vivid testament of the legendary wealth of Constantinople but crusaders scarcely had a glimpse of it. The Byzantine capital was surrounded by two concentric ring of thick stone wall more than ten miles round and 30 feet high. To the friends of his realm the emperor will throw open his triumphant gates and usher them into the heart of his city. But for the masses of crusaders they remained firmly closed. The gates had been sealed of direct order of the emperor Alexious. He was furious of the catholic army of 60 thousands is not what he had in mind when he ask Pope Urban to send an elite team of mercenaries. Because what he required is about a group of three hundred knights well trained and well armed that he could direct where he felt the threat is greatest. But what he got is something completely different. Tens of thousands of fanatical armed men that descended upon him like a series of pest or locust coming down that approached his city wave after wave.

The swarm of soldiers that was sent by his rival the Pope is now camping outside the gates was large enough to attack the city. He couldn't afford to offend them but anxiously he could see a way to manipulate them towards on his advantage. The Emperor invited the principle commander of the crusade into his lair, the inner sanctum of the imperial palace. Alexious is confident that he could win Duke Godfrey and his brother Baldwin. But now they have been joined by another crusade commander Bohemund of Taranto. He is the aggressive eldest son of the family of Norman mercenaries who recently taken control of the Southern Italy. Bohemund experience in war is invaluable. He already battled the Muslim is Sicily and won, but for years he was also fighting with the Byzantine. But Bohemund like other crusaders is better soldier than a politician they are all about outwitted.

When the emperor had the Bohemund, (the most distinguished man) had arrived he ordered to welcome him with a proper ceremony. Then once he is settled in, he invited Duke Godfrey and Baldwin to a secrete conference. He planned how to trap these Christian knights in cunning. Alexious had lost most of his empire to the Turks; he wanted his lands back not to see to pass on to the rival Catholic army.

The Emperor had still one trump card to his sleeve. When the crusaders came to his land one thing that they needed...... food. They are the armies that are unprepared; the crusaders must start business with Alexios. In return to his promise to supply food each of the three crusaders leaders must swear an oath to be a legion of the Emperor. By that oath they grant Alexious of the commanding role of the whole campaigns, and vow to return to his empire and the Eastern Orthodox Church any lands that they may win back to the Turks. Soon they will be on the enemy territory for the first time and this fragile alliance would be put to the test.

With Constantinople behind them the crusaders still had a thousand miles of hostile territories across before they reach Jerusalem. After only a few weeks in May 1097 they reached the enemy held city of Nicea (today Iznik) had once a Byzantine city but 20 years earlier it was been seized by a Turkish warlords. It is now the new fortress capital of the new sultan Kilidj Arslan. Breaking their way in to Nicea will not be easy a thick 3mile long wall enclosed three side of the city. For six weeks the crusaders be seized Nicea, the fighting was intense but the morale of the Christians is high, they are in the verge of their first victim.

Though the crusaders had promised to return the city to the Byzantine emperor Alexious control they expected to keep Nicea by themselves. But their Byzantine allies was about to pull the rug under their feet. Along the western flank of the city there's a great Ascanian lake, here earlier on June 18, 1097, emissary of the Byzantine emperor initiated a secret plan to take the city and its spoils for themselves.

The Byzantine had brought their ships to the lake to help the siege, but they used their ship for quite a different purpose. They secretly contacted the Turks in the city ( they much more surrender peacefully to the Byzantine than to be chopped up to a little pieces by the crusader that are obviously thirsting to their blood). And when morning breaks on the battlement of the city are the imperial flag flying...the city had surrendered. And the site of the imperial banner above the city rampart. The crusader army have been double crossed by their so called Christian brother Emperor Alexious. The crusaders are betrayed. Robbed by the spoils of Nicea. The crusaders packed up their camps and ventured deeper to the enemy territory heading towards Jerusalem but they are not alone.

From the hills the Turkish Sultan Kilijd Arnsland shadowed their every step. He had just lost his fortresses now he wanted revenge. The Turkish leader would unleash the full might of his fighting force. More than fifty thousand men scouting the land ahead to the Crusader Army he found the perfect site of the surprises attack (the junction of two valleys) and it is known as the battle of Dorylaeum the first major battle of the crusade. A vanguard of 20 thousand men lead by Bohemund was separated from the rest of the crusaders. They end up camping alone and vulnerable in the very valley chosen by Kilijd Arnsland for his ambush, 35 miles from Nicea . At dawn July 1, 1097 tens of thousands of Turks had mounted ahead to attack against Bohemund force who camped alone on the valley bed ( gentlemen brave soldiers of Christ you can see that we are encircled and the hard battle lies ahead therefore let all knights go out and fight like men and meet the enemy...as he shouted).

With the Turks strumming to the camp the crusaders are pinned down no matter how many Turks they killed they were losing more men. The wave after another wave of Turkish cavalry sweeps towards them. They are now facing a kind of warfare that they never encountered before. These are not ordinary riders these are archers mounted on horseback they attack quickly and very light and shooting arrows in the back of the horse in a very fast speed. This new tactics decimating Bohemund forces of 20 thousand men. But mounted archers were not the only one the Turks installed, they can draw an arrow in a far distances (the Nowkia) this are a battalion inside the Turks army where arrow foot soldiers, (they will lay down their back to the ground and use a huge bow and used both muscles of their legs to draw and released the arrow hundred of meters away).

Bohemund now lost some four thousand men and now the Turks are closing in for the kill. Desperately he ordered his men to hold behind the line of his camp. But beyond the valley help was in hand with the army of Godfrey and Baldwin pouring into the valley the crusader force swell to 55 thousand men. The sheared numbers of combined crusaders force are over whelm the Turks. The crusaders now believed that they are now invincible. One of the crusaders wrote to his wife that they are on the gates of Jerusalem in just five weeks.

But they are wrong in just over a month they are still hundreds of miles away from the Holy City and hundreds more would be dead not from battle but the from the perils of the journey itself. The crusaders had successfully defeated the Turkish army Kilidj Arnslin on Dorylaeum. But their leaders feared another ambush instead following the direct route of the Holy Land they uptrend more secured pass across the anti-Taurus mountains. These mountains are so high and steep that no one of the soldiers could dare to over pass the other, horses fell over the ridges. Compelled to travel in single file it took them three weeks to cross the mountains. And the worse is yet to come. Already exhausted they headed down into the Arab plane of Pesidea a 90 degree heat (this land is deserted waterless and inhabitable they suffered from hunger and thirst) more of five hundred of them died and frustrated of suffering. One noble casualty was Godehilde de Toeni the wife of Baldwin a very wealthy woman. Her death means that his chances of becoming rich when he went back home had gone. Baldwin look out was changed his policy now with wealth and territory of his own.The day of her death his aimed had changed he became greedy. Baldwin took a few hundred Knights and left the main army with the solo mission. If he want to make up the loss of his wife wealth the easiest coarse is to seize a city of his own. A hundred miles to the east is the perfect target.... Edessa.

Edessa is a wealthy city, it generates its own income to metal works. It is a fertile region and also in a trade routes. The problem was Edessa was not in Muslim hands it was a Christian city it held out against the Turks. The people of Edessa are weary of constant attack of the Muslims. When the news spread that the great crusader prince was close by, the citizens pleaded to their governor Thorus (a Christian Armenian) to invite Baldwin to come to their aid. Thorus was useless he was unable to protect his citizen from the danger of the infidel. Baldwin help will come with a price. He would protect Edessa from the Turks in return for the keys of the city. Thorus naively promised Baldwin to be a new ruler but only after his death. The old man sealed his faith by adopting Baldwin as his son, but for Baldwin Thorus death would not come soon enough. Thorus soon realized that he was been deceived so he runs for his life. He took a rope then let it down from the tower, but immediately they sought him down in the middle of the street and cut his head and put it in the spear and rounded it in the city for every one could see.

As Baldwin celebrated his success of taking Edessa a hundred and fifty miles in the South West the main crusader army arrived to the great walled city of Antioch. Since the time of the apostle St.Peter it is a striving Christian city. But in 1095 the Turks had seized control. (This would be a price second only to Jerusalem but a price worth dying for). It was surrounded by two great tower walls each one of which are very high and amazingly broad it was build with huge stones and anather sets of 450 smaller towers and alongside the city walls runs a deep river and all above the city are beautiful. The crusaders wanted the city for many reasons. One and foremost is strategic Antioch is literally the gate way to Syria and the holy land. If they leave the city behind them their route for escape and their route of resupply and reinforcement will be cut off. Spiritually Antioch is almost equal of Jerusalem of any ways. Because in Christian tradition it was the site of the founding of the very first Christian church by St. Peter the apostle of Christ. The majority of Antioch inhabitants are Armenia and Orthodox Christians. Their Turkish ruler granted them a total freedom to worship. But this was not enough for the crusaders outside the city walls. They wanted to remove the Turks from power and return the city to the Christian rule, (but taking it back wouldn't be easy because Antioch is a very well defended city).

Yaghi-Siyan (the ruler of Antioch) did his outmost to keep the enemy out. But he knew any of the local Christians might be persuaded to let the enemy in. So he sent all the Muslims outside the city walls to dig trenches and the next day he sent the Christians themselves to do the same task. When they are ready to return home in the end of the day, he refused to let them in ( Antioch is yours he said but you leave it to me until we will found out what will happen between us and the enemy) Yaghi-Siyan believe he made Antioch undefeatable.

And then he turns his attention to the crusaders army outside the city walls he fought the crusaders vigorously and his effort payed off. After eight months the crusaders are no close of getting in and the condition in the camp is utterly desperate. Food has been always been scares and they have the expelled Christian to feed as well. As the siege drag on the crusaders has nothing else to eat day by day and the famine grew. The crusaders forced to drain blood from their horses and drink it. The suffering of the crusaders are about to get worst.

Yaghi -siyan used pegions to bring messages to other tribes in the Muslim world to ask reinforcements. Two months later Christian scouts reported that a massive Turkish army was on its way. The crusaders have no time, they need to break in the city quickly. It was Bohemund found the weak spot of the city defenses. A traitor in the Muslim ranks named Firouz (they bride him with the fortune and lands).Firouz was a commander not only of one tower but of three towers.

All the preparation was made towards dawn the knight and the foot soldier began to approach the towers which Firouz was warden and Bohemund said (go on strong at heart and lucky enough and scale the ladders into Antioch because for Gods will this city is ours as price). They took the ladders and amazing number of men begun to claimed but then disaster strikes the ladder broke up, but it was too late to turn back more crusaders was scramming up to the remaining ladders into Firouz tower. Within minute they are streaming down in the battlement of the city and opening the gates for the rest of the knights waiting outside the city walls.

Eight months of starvation and disease left the crusaders no mood for mercy. Guided by the local Christian of Antioch they flush the Muslim out to their homes, city streets and the mosque and killed them indiscriminately (every street and every corners are full of corpses so that no one can endures to be there because of the stench, no they can walk to the narrow path because of the dead). Everyone was massacred Jews, Christian, Muslim women children and elderly. But the only one inhabitant of Antioch that the crusader did not find was the Turkish ruler Yaghi-Siyan. He manages to escape. Yaghi-siyan panic, he open the gate and manage to escape with the escort of 30 men. When he recovered his self control, he repented having rushed to safety instead of staying there and fight to the death. He started groaning and weeping. When he was on his last gasp a shepherd pass by killed him and cut off his head and took it to the crusaders in Antioch. Yaghi-siyan's head on the stick was a small consolation for the crusaders. Bohemund have much more to worry about. Yaghi-siyan message had gotten through, the day after his execution. The Turkish reinforcement finally arrived, and the Christian besiegers are now becomed the besieged.

In June 1098, after the eight months siege, the crusaders had finally taken the Ancient city of Antioch. Ironically they have traded places with the enemy. The Christian is now imprisoned behind the walls, and the Turks are in the outside ready to besiege.

The holy Lance

This is a very difficult situation the morale is rock bottom everybody is frightened. And in this desperate situation the basic motivation and belief of the crusaders came out. The belief of the leading members that somehow God was on their side. The crusaders prayed for a miracle and they got one. News spreads that God sent a message to one of the crusaders in a vision. The crusader is only a lonely priest from France but his vision inspired the entire army. He was a pilgrim by the name Peter Bartholomew. One night so he said, St. Andrew the apostle appeared unto him and said, no my son but if you go to the church of the Blessed Peter on the city of Antioch then you shall find the holy lance, the spear that Jesus Christ was pierced when he was hanging in the cross.

To find the holy lance in the time of deep crisis can lead to a deepest connection between the crusaders and Christ. A signal from God that everybody can focus on, with this unarguable and undisputable evedence. It is a solid metal token from God's will. On June 1098 Peter Bartholomew handpicked his band of 12 disciples and dash to the small church to dig the floor where he claimed the holy lance was buried. After a day and night of digging, their hope had gone to fail. But Peter himself went into the pit inside the church and pulled out a piece of rusty metal. He claimed he found the elusive holy lance. The people in the army recovered their morale, this is a moment of violent religious exaltation. The mood of the army changes, aggression replaced the defeatism, this is the army ready to fight.

The crusaders had only 200 horses left but they still rolled out to face the
Turks head on the holy land held high. One eye witnessed yet spoke another vision, army of spirits sent by God (a countless men with white horses whose banners are all white. When the men saw this they did not understand what was happening on. Until they realized this is the blessed help sent by God). The Turks fled in terror and with God's help they defeated them. Whether the vision was real or just elaborate hopes to boost morale, the city of Antioch was now again in Christian hands. But it will never be returned in the control of the hands of the Byzantine Emperor. Bohemund amend his promise to the Byzantine emperor and make himself the Prince of Antioch. He completely broken his promise to Alexious. His territory is now in crusaders hand, Baldwin controlled all the lands around Edessa and Bohemund the territory around Antioch both are now very rich men.

But in the end of 1098 as the leaders completely consumed of their new principalities they began to argue on whether to continue their march to Jerusalem. There are huge arguments right across the range among the leader all the way through different levels of the army about where the crusade should go next. Whether they should continue directly march to Jerusalem or should they recover their strength and how long they should wait. What route should they take. And the potential is for the army to literally just be fall apart into different direction, for people to start returning home or to lose their interest entirely. As the crusaders squabbled the troops demanded that the army march Southward to Jerusalem to them the true goal of the crusade had been forgotten. Their anger and frustration finally boiled over in a small town two days ride from Antioch called Maarrat Al Numan, (north west corner of Syria). It would be here that the Christian would commit the most evil atrocity of the crusade. The crusaders are really indiscriminate about killing both inhabitant regardless of their faith or religion. As the crusaders consolidate their hold on the land around Antioch a small contingent arrived here.

In November 1098, under the leadership of Bohemund. His men enter the gates and each of them seize their own share of whatever good they could find and all the houses and cellar are ransacked and towards dawn everybody of the inhabitants are killed whether Muslim, Christian, soldier, women, children, elderly. Treachery followed by massacre had become the calling card at the crusader army. But as Christian witnesses revealed it was what happened after the killing finally stopped that has set the story of Maarat Al Numan, apart. The crusaders stayed in the city for one month and four days and while they are there some of their men could not satisfy their needs either because they are there for too long or because they are so hungry for there was no food to be found outside the city walls. So they ripped up the bodies of the dead and others cut the flesh of the dead and sliced it and cook it to eat. (A terrible famine racked the army in Ma`arra, and placed it in the cruel necessity of feeding itself on the bodies of the Saracens).

To the leader of the crusade the barbarity that took place at Maarat Al Numan proved that their troops would not tolerated any more delays. The time it comes to fulfill their vows and seize the city that inspired them to risk everything in the name of God. It made no difference that Jerusalem had recently fallen into the control of a far more conciliatory Muslim power,

In June 1099, 13 thousand crusaders less of the quarter of a number of them had originally set up from Europe arrived at the gates of the city where Jesus Christ had died. When the crusaders reached the walls of Jerusalem they finally arrived to their goal. After three years, and three thousand miles marching and the most incredible suffering and with more terrible losses finally they arrived at the Holy city. Some was overwhelmed with emotion they wet themselves. Others frustrated themselves on the ground. But now of course the hardest task would face them, they have to break in.

After three years of fighting the crusader army prepared to attack Jerusalem, the walls were 50 feet high and ten feet thick. To scale them they will need ladder and siege towers. But the Muslim defenders had raised the entire surrounding area of trees. The Christian sent out foraging parties to scavenge for wood. Hidden in a hole in the ground they found four hundred pieces of ready prepared timber it seemed once again God was giving them a helping hand. It was enough timber to build two fifty foot siege towers with which to attack the walls of Jerusalem. Everything was in place for the final showdown.

On the fourteenth of July 1099, the crusaders launched a two pronged assault. Two siege towers was rolled into place one to the North West and the other to the South of the city. The Muslim defenders knew if just one tower breach the wall Jerusalem would fall. Stone, arrow, bone raining upon the crusaders, the fighting is barbaric and intense. In one point the crusaders gave a live ammunition a literal meaning, they captured a Muslim strapped him in the catapult and fired it back into the walls. To the south, the Muslim repelled the first siege tower with pot of oil and flaming bolts until finally it went up in flames. With only one siege tower was left through the northwest of the city under to the command of the crusader General Duke Godfrey. He decided to change of his plan, Godfrey moved into a position between the Church of the Blessed Steven and the valley of Jastefat.

This Godfrey's plan was inspiring, he had found the weak spot of the Muslim fortification, but it was a mile round to the north east of the city. In the course of just a few hours and under the cover of darkness he had his men wheeled the siege tower to the least defended post. For 2,000 years there has a legend of a warrior king, he founded a mighty country China. He was its first emperor and his empire became his fortress protected by a great wall. The legend says he was a tyrant driven mad by power, he cheated death, and build a tomb the like of which humanity had never seen. But it was not enough he wanted to live forever. A man with one extraordinary vision, and left a legacy which lasted over 2,000 years. The legend said he was the most powerful man on earth. For 30 years he subjected China in the most violent and bloody phase on its history yet he achieved the impossible, he unified the people, ten times as many subjects as the pharaohs of Egypt, and an empire that outlasts Rome for a thousand years. His name is Qin shi Huang di (Ying Zheng).

247 BC In the Chin royal palace in Xianyang. The first emperor shows a little sign of greatness. The day he becomes king of the western Chinese state of Chin, the omens aren't good because the previous king of Chin is just lasted for three years, King Ying Zheng is nearly 13 years old, already the sharks begin to encircles him, hungry for power and caught up their heart is his own mother Zhao Ji.

The queen has a long time lover the last king's adviser Lu Buwei. Nation like Chin has always been run as feudal family business by men like Liu Buwei. But theirs a revolution coming that changed all. It all began in the arrival of a young scholar Li Si just months after Ying Zheng becomes king. Lui Su arrived on his court looking for a job. Prime ministers Lu Buwei allows Li Si an audience with the young king without taken care of his present. Li Si awaken Ying Zheng that the real power is his, he just need a courage and the vision to use it. (for over the next 30 years he conquered the rest of the states). In the ten years since he came to the throne in 247 BC king Ying Zheng has strengthens his power through war. He fought for his life and for a dream for the a new nation China. Many great king had tried before him and all had failed, But this time would be different because Ying Zheng is different. The youngest king who lead his nation into war, he is its greatest warrior, a visionary leader burning with ambition (if anyone can unified China it is him).

Ancient China was made up seven warring states (Chin, Wei, Zhao, Yen, Chi, Han, Chu) six of the seven was weakened by endless warfare, while one continues to grow by their expense the state of Chin. In it's campaign on the state of Zhao the Chin army takes 10,000 prisoners the rules of war was explicit prisoners must be cared for. However looking after captive would slowdown his campaign, so all 10,000 Zhao prisoners were executed, and Ying Zheng define his quest for empire bloody, ruthless and totally dependant in the army.

The well trained and motivated Chin army equipped with precession weapons and leaded from the front by a ruthless and ambitious king creates a perfect conquest machine. Within seven years Ying Zheng captured 13 city in the state of Han and further 20 in the other states and repelled the combine force that intended in stopping him on his tracts. The entire court was assembled in celebration, but not everyone is watching the show. The queen had a new favorite Lao Ai. In the eyes of the court Lao Ai is a eunuch. Is an odd choice for companion for a woman who had the history of important lovers. But Lao Ai is no eunuch he had fathered two sons with the queen which they had raised in secret and he intended to place one of them to the throne. But the king had its' suspicion about his mother and her supposedly secret lover.

238BC The state of Chin is not a safe place for anybody The queen had keep her young sons secret in the care of eunuchs, whom she believed are loyal to her. But loyalty can be changed quickly, and the king had learned by their existence. Knowing its a matter of time before his plot to put his eldest boy on the throne was discovered.The queen's lover Lao Ai make a desperate bid for power. He had stolen the royal seals, giving him the authority to mobilized troops.

District forces under Lao Ai's command approached the palace. He knows that his only chance is to catch the king unprepared. With the palace lightly guarded he intends to seized the throne. The Palace's security is the responsibility of the prime minister Lu Buwei and he just discovered Lao Ai's plan to grab power. Lao ai's forces meet no resistance as they approached the palace, but the trap has being set and they advance straight into it. Lao Ai's troop are annihilated and he is taken prisoner.

Lao Ai execution was design to send a very clear and deliberate message. soon to be re enforced by killing every single member of his family, starting with the most dangerous. The first challenge for Ying Zheng's reign is over and the lesson has been learned. Ruthless control is the standard treatment of all, including his own family. Now Ying Zheng is expected to add his prime minister and his own mother to his long list of victims. Lu Buwei is under the sentence of death for failing to protect his king, but they had a special secret bond (Lu Buwei is his father). Lu Buwei is a rich merchant. He befriended the prince of the Chin State during the latter years of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 B.C.).

The merchant's lovely wife Zhao Ji had just gotten pregnant, so he arranged for the prince to meet and fall in love with her. She became the prince's concubine, and then gave birth to Lu Buwei's child in 259 B.C. The baby was born in Hanan, and was named Ying Zheng. The prince believed that the baby was his own.Ying Zheng became king of the Chin state in 246 B.C.
Both parents are spared, Lu Buwei was vanished after the Lao Ai incident, but did not lose all his influence in Chin. However, he lived in constant fear of execution by the mercurial young king. In 235 B.C., Lu committed suicide by drinking poison. The queen dowager Zhao Ji spent the rest of her days under house arrest.

The scholar Li Si will be the new power behind the throne, perfecting a totalitarian ideology ready to imposed in an unified China. By 227bc the Chin state swallowed three of the independent states of China(Han,Wei,Zhao) . Like a silk worm devouring a leaf. Panic spread ahead from the advancing war machine. The state of Yen is next in the firing line and they know they were powerless to resist. A diplomatic mission was sent to the kings court, it's aim is to halt the advancing bang wagon on it's tract.

They bring peace offering to the king Ying Zheng. The first is the map of Chin's conquest to flattered the king. The second gift is the head of the renegade Chin's general returned as the sign that Yen would not harbor Chin's enemies. But the men carrying them (Jing Ke and QinWuyang) are not diplomats but a professional assassins and neither expected to return from the mission alive.

Qin Wuyang first tried to present the map case gift, but trembled in fear and moved no farther towards the king. Jing Ke continued to advance toward the king, while explaining that his partner "has never set eyes on the Son of heaven", which is why he is trembling. Jing Ke had to present both gifts by himself.While unrolling the map, a dagger was revealed. The king drew back, stood on his feet, but struggled to draw the sword to defend himself.At the time other palace officials were not allowed to carry weapons. Jing Ke pursued the king, attempting to stab him, but missed. King Zheng drew out his sword and cut Jing Ke's thigh. Jing Ke then threw the dagger, but missed again. Suffering eight wounds from the king's sword, Jing Ke realized his attempt had failed. Both Jing Ke and Qin Wuyang would be killed afterwards. Ying zheng new security system had failed, the greart conqueror, the invincible king was inches from death.

From now on paranoia grew on Ying Zheng's mind, for the rest of his reign, images of death hunt on his dreams. It is not the act of dying he feared, but the realization that he is filling the spirit world with the souls of those he sacrifices. Souls who will soon as he is dead seek terrible revenge. At the age of 34 Ying Zheng is crowned with the Vail of stars symbolizing the divinity of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang di (means the first god of the Chin). He regarded him self not only a defied figure but as an innovator or a creator, someone who begin a long lineage.With the help of his prime minister Li si the first emperor Ying Zheng put in place a system of governance that it would long outlasted him. Li Si who arrived as a young scholar the year ,the young emperor came to the throne has become a new power behind it. For 20 years he perfected the system that sweeped away China's feudalist past once and for all. Li si totalitarian philosophy is called legalism. The system that governed every citizen's daily life and the penalty for the transgression is to include physical punishment and mutilation or death.

The emperors demanded more labor, with the empire secured he turned his eye to the fulfillment of his next ambition, sending thousand more workers to build his tomb befitting the first divine ruler of all China. The emperor sent more than 700 thousand convict to dig down three small rivers and fill it with bronze. On the floor of the vault is a map of his entire empire and jewels unto the ceiling to represent the sky(cosmos) and stream and ocean were filled with quick silver (mercury), and he had a machine that circulates the mercury to imitate the flow of the water. A bronze tomb filled with liquid mercury. The idea seems beyond fantasy. The weight of the mercury alone would be five hundred tons.

215BC the tomb it self is on way to completion but the man that intended to house, suddenly had a change of heart. The idea of eternal after life however grand is no longer enough. The first emperor of China is once again on the road. He know longer trust the security of his own court and he started taken practical steps to extend his life. There are worst shock to come those who tried to hide their works are rounded up to their thousands. Branded on the face and sentence to a life of forced labor mostly in the great wall. And those who resist further are buried alive.

And all the time the emperor contact with the reality been losens still further aided with his mercury consumption. The dose has been increased for the last five year, as his desire for immortality has become more obsessive. But far from prolonging his life the mercury is having the opposite effect.

212BC 35 years after he came to the throne Ying Zheng embarks another imperial tour but this one is different. Where once there was a prosperous and powerful nation today the nation rots. The land is starved of labor for the emperors great projects, famine looms and there is nothing anyone can do. The emperors obsession with immortality is upper most on his mind.

On the 10th month of 210BC the emperor Ying Zheng is out of his mind, and while he plays the world of his own. His advisers planned what to do with his empire once his poison body ways to his poisoned mind, they know it wont be long. With Li Si is the emperors second son Ho Hai. Ho Hai is not the emperors first choice to succeeds him, but the emperor would not live forever and Li Si had planned to change the succession. Returning from his journey Ying Zheng become so ill and hurried back to his capital but the imperial convoy has stopped on his tracts. On the 7th month of 210BC his journey is over. And the search of immortality had ended the great empire has lost its maker. At the age of 50 Qin shi huang di (Ying Zheng) is dead.

Notre Dame echoed of the sound of 400 musicians and singers. The young man born in the island of Corsica, moved impatiently forward. Napoleon Bonaparte 35 years old is about to be crowned emperor of France "I found the crown of France in the gutter and I picked it up" (he said). It was December 2, 1804 Napoleon's conquest will extends his empire across almost all Europe and he ruled over 70 million people, not since the ancient Caesars one man held so much power.

"I was born when Corsica was perishing. Thirty thousand Frenchmen spewed on to our shores, drowning the throne of liberty in waves of blood... The cries of the dying, the groans of the oppressed and tears of despair surrounded my cradle from the hour of my birth." Corsica is a new French colony, suspended in the Mediterranean between France and Italy. For centuries Corsican fearlessly resisted invaders Romans, Mores, and Genoies. After French victory Corsican rebels fled to the mountains when they continue to fight on.

Napoleon changed the world. He is the man who rises not in the basis of his blood or his back ground but in the basis of his ability. No one appeared like him or dominated the worlds like he has. What is Napoleon ? It's a hand, the shirt, and a strange hat. If you show the hand, the shirt and the hat in Japan, United States, or France everybody will say Napoleon. He above all ambitious he loved power, like musician love music.

Napoleon mounted to the altar alone, seizing the crown in his own hand and put it to rest in his own head. That morning he quietly told his brother, if only our father could see as now.

In the spring of 1769 Leticia and Carlo Bonaparte was crossing the mountains to travel the interior of the island of Corsica. They were Corsican patriots determine to repel French army that invaded their tiny island nation. The Corsican is about only 100 - 120 thousand people of peasant or shepherd in origin. They had very few fire arms and very little gun powder, that's all they had to defend themselves against the 22 million population of France. The most advance country in Europe that time. The Corsicans never stood a chance after years of fighting leaving dead and wounded, they were defeated. And Leticia and Carlo are going home, Leticia is six months pregnant. That summer Leticia is celebrating the feast of the assumption when she felt her first labor pain. Later that day August 15 1769, she gave birth to a son Napoleon Bonaparte. Born just after the bitter French conquest, Napoleon spends his childhood hating France the nation he would one day rule.

But Napoleon's father Carlo a 22 year old university student readily submitted. Soon he is wearing powdered wigs, embroidered waistcoats and silver buckled shoes. Napoleon never forgave him for betraying his Corsican heritage. He will say's harshly that his father is rather too fun of pleasure. Napoleon is having a grudge for having him submitted. The poor Carlo knew he lost the battle and the French is there and he should live with them and make the best of it.

Carlo began practicing law, one election in Corsican assembly he stood up in the steam of French rulers. But Napoleon rarely had a good thing to say about him. He saved his praise to his mother the beautiful strong-willed Leticia. As a mother he would say she has no equal, Napoleon is fascinated by her and praised her enormously. She is tough and determine woman, 13 times pregnant with eight surviving children. He said that all his success in life was due to the training she gave him. The mother! What a man! Napoleon said. She had a head of a man with the body of a woman. "She sometimes made me go to bed without supper, as if there were nothing to eat in the house. One had to learn to suffer and not let others see it."

Carlo and Leticia own a house in the county as well as one in the city a mark on their status. They were Corsican aristocrats but they are not rich. With eight children they struggle just to get by, in an island that is impoverished in centuries. There was nothing, the ambitious couple believed that Corsica could offer them or to their children only one country could. As a representative of Corsican parliament Carlo traveled to Versailles. There he saw the splendor of French court of all its majesty. French is the envy of Europe. Great Britain, Austria, Prussia (Germany), Spain none have more people or greater wealth. While America is just beginning its experiment on its democracy.

Carlo was an outstretch provence, rumbling of discontent of king Louie the 16th and the aristocratic privileges was no concern of his. The queen Marie Antoinette and the privilege court re-draining France of its precious resources, did not diminished Carlo delight in everything he saw. He dreamed that one day his children would become noble men of glittering of power, when he doesn't have a place. For years Carlo had nourished a plan in Versailles, he saw it will come true.

He worked to secure Napoleon a scholarship to Brienne, a private academy in France. Napoleon set foot in France for the first time in the winter of 1778, A thin sallow nine years old. An accustomed of the warmth Mediterranean, suddenly alone of a windswept plane of northern France. A scholarship boy at the royal military college at Brienne de chateau. He could hardly speak French. For the next five years there will be no holidays there will be no visit home. He had no much friends, he still thought of himself as a gradient subject of an alien king. He thinks of himself as a Corsican. He is surrounded by students who are the children of French aristocrats. And they have nothing in common with this little foreigner. And since he is quite proud, he becomes a loner. When he was in school in Brienne in continental France, where he was very much laughed at and bullied for being a barbarous Corsican, he dreamed all the time of liberating Corsica. But he did something quite exceptional. He conquered his conquerors. He got the better of the French.　

He was 15 when he was promoted to the royal military academy in Paris. Along with the sons of France greatest families he would learn the slender of French civilization. The royal academy was as much as a finishing school. Turning officers into gentlemen as a war college. We were magnificently fed and served, "Bonaparte said". Treated in everyway like officers possess of great wealth. The poor Corsican teenager still felt like an outsider, he entered the world of opulence and lectury, but only served of the few French nobility. One teacher describes him as quiet and solemn frightfully and eager, proud and ambitious and inspiring to everything. He would go far in favorable circumstances his school report said. He began apprenticing as a soldier when he was 16 a second lieutenant. Training in the best artillery unit in the France army. He grew expert in citing a gun handling armours, shot, and deploying men.

His greatest career in military history had began. He feels that the reign will not let him the position he dreamed. The top position is reserve for the noble men and Napoleon came from the minor nobility poor people. Frustrated in his military ambition Bonaparte dreamed to be famous as an author. He wrote the brief history of Corsica even tried to write a Nobel. He knows that he is capable of great things, he thinks that he is distant for greatness. But in that point how can he possibly believe it. "Always alone among men, I come home to dream by myself and to give myself over to all the forces of my melancholy," Napoleon wrote. On July 14 1789 Paris erupted. Angry crowd storms to the streets crying equality, liberty, and brotherhood. France was thrown into turmoil. The monarchy itself shuttered into the edge of destruction. The defiant absolute assembly changed the right of the king. Stripped nobles and clergy of their ancient privileges fracturing the social order that endured for centuries. After years of injustice and inequality the revolution had began it would take years before it could end. As the revolution gained momentum Bonaparte was serving in the army far from Paris. He distrusted the violent Mob, but welcome the changes forming the country.

He is certainly not a revolutionary for the beginning of the revolution. But Bonaparte welcomes the revolution as good news, it has almost a religious impact for him because all of the sudden he thinks the revolution will open French society. It abolished privileges, it put the hierarchy in condensation in which Napoleon suffered while he was growing up. Bonaparte is the man of his time, being a 20 years old on 1789 is very important. Napoleon destiny and the destiny of the whole country became the same.

In the summer of 1792 Bonaparte was on leave in Paris. He witness the last grasp of French monarchy. In June the Mob stormed the palace and forced the king to wear the red revolutionary bond. In august the Mob massacred all the kings Swiss guard, king Louie the XVI was dethrone. The French republic was proclaimed that fall. Napoleon wants to be part to this new world, he wants to play a role and he will starts where the place he knows very well..... Corsica.

Bonaparte was 23 an idealistic revolutionary, he took leave of absence on the French army and turn to Corsica. The French republic makes Corsica apart from France and given Corsicans the right and liberty of France citizens. Bonaparte a lieutenant of the island national guard threw him self into Corsican politics.

Pasquale Paoli is the islands governor, Pauli is Bonaparte childhood hero. The leader of the Corsican war against France. Now Bonaparte dreamed of rising to power standing on Paoli's side. But he bitterly disappointed, Paoli did not trust him. "A big inexperience boy".... Paoli called him. The Corsican patriot called Bonaparte too ambitious, too self centered, too sympathetic to France.

Bonaparte and Paoli are on totally different wavelengths. Paoli retains the idea that Corsica should be independent. By this time Napoleon Bonaparte is perfectly comfortable with Corsica that is part of revolutionary France. Bonaparte soon became the leader of a faction opposed to Paoli. Bonaparte no longer had the right to live in Corsica, he had been given a death sentence by his own people. His idealism has shaken He wrote to his brother, among so many conflicting ideas the honest man is confused and distressed. "Since one must take side and one must choose which is victorious. Considering the alternative it is better to eat than be eaten". The defeat in Corsica, the break from his hero Paoli had toughened him, made him shrewd and turn him toward France. From the time he had this break up with Paoli's Corsica he is French, he want to be French.

On June 10, 1793 he set sail for France with his widowed mother, three brothers and three sisters – a refugee family carrying with them all they owned in the world. Twenty-four years old, he was banished from the land of his birth forever.

Bonaparte returned to France to find the French is fighting among themselves. The king had been executed the queen and thousand more followed him to the guillotine. The city is in revolt and uprising in the provinces Maximilien Robespierre was in charge now. He suspended the constitution, bow to save the Republic from his enemies by any cause. The revolution turned into the terror.

Torned by civil war France was also at war with almost all with Europe, Austria, Spain, Prussia (Germany), and Great Britain, are bend to destroy the new French republic. While French radicals promised all people to rises against their rulers. Reinstated in the army as a captain Bonaparte was ordered to Toulon a city of 28 thousand people in the southern cost of France, who has rebelled against the Republic throwing its port open to the English. The British fleet defended the city from the harbor. The 28 year old Bonaparte knew how to drive them out. He argued, if his soldier seized the heights commanding the harbor they can bombared the fleet, drive them away and the city will fall. It was a simple plan but none of the generals would listen.

The generals in Toulon are totally unconfidence or little worst. Finally one confident general showed up and listen to Napoleon plans and said naturally. This could be Bonaparte first great chance. With the aristocratic fleeing the country there was suddenly a vacuum, an opportunity of rapid promotion of soldiers who can proved themselves under fire. Bonaparte fought bravely leading his men assaulted the fort guarding the heights. He Suffered a wound in the tight from the enemy bayonet. Ten ships went up in flames and the British fled. It is necessary to suspend liberties in the name of liberty, to save liberty and to save the republic it is necessary to suspend individual liberty. In the summer of 1794 Robespeirre government fell. Now it is the time for the makers of terror to die including Robespierre.

In the spring of 1795 Bonaparte headed for Paris. Now a Brigadier general he was determine to raise higher. France had a new constitutional government. The guillotine, the riot in the street, the war in the frontier all seems forgotten. Bonaparte is frequently in the salons were the women dominated the Paris high society will held court. Then political turmoil once again gave his chance, mobs of Parisians joined by national guardsmen bent on toppling the Republic. And the government called on Bonaparte to repel the attack. When the rebellion broke out there are no other competent general in Paris that time except Bonaparte, a man of conviction they put him in.

Napoleon will use all his weapon, and nobody used cannons to the mob before. Bonaparte was sent to the Italian Alps Josephine's former lover Paul Barras had helped him to win an appointment as a supreme commander of all French forces in Italy. His assignment is to challenge the Empire of Austria and their Italian allies. He had never commanded an army before, young and untested no one expected very much from him specially his own generals. Everyone make's fun with him before he gets their. This little general perhaps owns his command from his wife. But when he arrives the veterans who make fun with him understand exactly he is in charge. Do not know why (one of his general said) but the little bastard scares me.

Bonaparte's army was no condition to win the battles. It had been stagnating under incompetent commanders in the foothills of the Alps for almost two years. Soldiers (he proclaimed) you were naked and ill fed no fame shines on you. I will lead you to the most fertile planes in the world, rich provinces, great cities will line in your power. You will find there honor, glory and riches.He really installed them, he was a terrific actor. He was capable of laughing and smiling and then suddenly he was passionate, inspiring feared, horror and anger.

On April 2 1796. Bonaparte lead his army forward. he was badly out numbered 36 thousand French soldiers against 38thousands Austrian and their allies 25thousand Piedmantese(from Piedmont nothwest of Itailian). Bonaparte plan to isolate the the Austrian from Piedmantese then conquer them separately. He would strike first at Piedmont. In just two weeks he won six battles, took thousands of prisoners and broke the back of Piedmont army. One Peidmanteses officer once complaint. "they send a young mad man who attacked right, left and from the rear this is intolerable way of making war." On April 26 Piedmont surrendered. Bonaparte amended gold and silver and paid his troops ( the first real money they have seen in years) soldiers he said we thank you.

When Bonaparte led his soldier into battle he never stop of thinking Josephine writing her letter after letter day after day. Not a day goes by without me loving you (he wrote) not a night without you holding my heart, I've cursed the glory and ambition which keeps me from the souls of my life whenever I am troubled. How things will turn out I put my hand to these hearts were throbs you are likeness I have to look at it and my love is in perfect happiness. With Piedmont defeated they pursue the Austrians who retreated to the east, bewildered by the 26 years old general and his new way of making war. He attacks everyday, he attack when its snows, he attack at night. its not the way the game is played. He looks for the enemy, fights it and when they assumed he stops he continued, the next they he fights again, it surprises them.

As the Austrian fled, their rare guards hope's to slow Bonaparte down by making a stand at the little Italian town of Lodi. They fortified a narrow wooden bridge with fourteen canons and three battalions and dared Bonaparte to cross it. The general ordered a simple frontal assault on the bridge everything will depend on the courage of his men. He earned their admiration with his rapid string of victories. Now he would find out their faith. Napoleon is a master in motivation his soldiers. His troops are chasing the Austrian now by weeks. There are no strategy at all, the troops are coming so enthusiastically quick, it surprises the enemy. The question of enthusiasm is they drove them selves into it, with the risk of death. With his men facing withering enemy fire Bonaparte was unthinkable this is the man with absolute courage, he's there wherever his needed if he is needed in the very front to encourage people he is there, he takes physical risks. Even the cannon balls fell close to him (this happen in several occasions) his not afraid.

The French faded halfway across the bridge and fall back under a vicious hell of fire. Then one last charge and they've acrossed. The Austrian gun fell silent, they think that they are safe across the bridge but when the French able to crossed it they fled throughout. But it was not a great victory, the Austrian army had in fact escaped but Bonaparte had won the respect and devotion of his men. He came dummy and covered with gun smoke, the troops liked that and they start calling him little corporal. This is the moment when he becomes convinced that he has a lucky star and his destiny had chosen him to accomplish great things. They have not seen anything yet (Bonaparte told his generals) in our time no one had a slightest conception of what is great, it is up to me to give them an example. The battle on Lodi convinced Bonaparte he is the man of destiny. From that moment (he said) I fore saw of what I might be already I felt earth flee from beneath me as if I were being carried into the sky.....the end

Hitler squanders his production resources on his giant V2 rocket that being fired in London with little military effect. The V2 is a model of today's ICBM Rocket Booster (space rockets) . The V1 flying bomb is a for runner of todays cruise missile. The fruit of German research also include Messerchmitt ME 163 and the flying wing which is the ancestor of the stealth bomber. But Hitler cannot do this in the production because that is not his priorities. Another reason that Germany scientist and the production officers are in sepate compartment of politics, so they do not work effectively together.

As the Russian drove to Germany from the east, and Germany cities are in ruins. Tactical bombing destroyed Germany oil production plants. As the Russian closes in to Berlin. Hitler finally admits defeat, and turns against to his own people. They have proven unworthy of victory, he declares. Then on April 30th 1945 Hitler put a new Nazi uniform sit's down on the sofa in his bunker office in Berlin and shoot himself in the head....

One day after the German retreat begins, the Japanese attacked the American fleet at Pearl Harbor. Hitler is surprised, he is been trying unsuccessfully to convince Japan to attack Russia from the rear. Four days later on Dec 11 1941. Hitler declared war on America. America's vast resources are now mobilized to defeat Nazi Germany as well as Japan. Hitler's act also set a two stage front land war. Something that German military doctrine must never be allowed to happen. With in a year American bomber from England started bombing Germany. In June 1944 America and Britain invade the continent and drive inland sticking a significant blow on German morale. In the first three months after D-day. Germany loses one and a quarter million men on the western and eastern fronts. By fall after a costly American and Allied victories American troops enter Germany from the west and Russian forces from the east. As the war turns to Germany a desperate Hitler calls for a miracle weapon to save the Third Reich.The ironic fact is that he had this on his finger tips...This part of the story is the amazing one and few people today knew this...It was the Messerschmitt Me 262 the first operational jet fighter. It could fly a 159 miles faster than the allied fastest fighters, three times faster than the B 17 bombers . The luftwaffe (Germany air force) founds what he need after all new fighters so fast and so powerful it can ignore American fighter escorts and shoot down American bombers. With this ME 262 German pilots plead they can stop Americas daylight bombing. But Hitler want a weapon for attack not for defense and he says no. Forbidden to use, the super planes might stop American bombers. The A's (Germany Pilots) rebel and they are fired. The German A's are not Nazi. under military rule German soldiers must not belong with a political party, they are highly disciplined warriors and even the thought of mutiny is extraordinary. The German pilots is so eager to use the plane that they risk their life to be shoot by the SS. Before the battle of Britain the A's are victorious they conquered territories in Europe and now their cities are bomb by the Americans. Finally Hitler allow to form a single squadron of jet fighters but most of the pilots are colonel, majors or a highly decorated. Their mission is to avoid or not be allowed their cities of being destroyed. But engine problems prevented the aircraft from further operational status. And the lack of fuel also reduced the effectiveness of the aircraft as a fighting force. The end of ME 262 had a negligible impact on the coarse of the war due to its late introduction and the small numbers that were deployed in operational service.

When Hitler lost the Battle of Britain he turns his eyes towards Russia. Now Hitler will break his treaty with the Soviet Union and will invade the vast country. The campaigned was called Barbarosa. It was on June 22 1941, a train from the east passing across the Volga river bringing Germany oil and corn from the Soviet Union. One hour later six thousand artillery guns fired, the invasion of Russia has began. The battle plan was developed by Hitler's order it will form three army groups. The northern group seizes Leningrad, The center group which is given much more Armour will go to Smolensk on the road to Moscow. The southern group will push through the Ukraine to Kiev and to Crimea. The army smash eastward in a high rate of speed even there are no reliable maps and few roads. In the first day they destroyed one thousand Soviet airplanes, with in a week they defeated five Russian armies.

In the grain rich Russian Ukraine the Germans were greeted by the peasants with flowers and food they are treated as liberators. Hatred of the Soviet runs deep here, Millions of Ukrainians have been murdered and starve to death by the Soviet governments. The Ukrainian wants to dissolve the farm collectives and re-open their churches and have the right to own their land. Instead the SS death squad arrived and began killing Jews and communist and anyone else who commits even the smallest infractions of German orders.

The peasant grain was shipped back to Germany leaving them to starve. The angry peasant form a partisan group, when they are caught they are hanged. Viewed from the military perspective the German raids on the Ukraine is a terrible mistake, but not to Hitler because terminating the slugs in what he always wanted to do. Some historian believed this is the place where Hitler lost the war of Russia. If only Hitler liberated Ukraine from Russia he had a vast Russian population to fight Stalin.

Meanwhile the German center army have reached Smolensk two thirds on the way to Moscow victory seems assured. But then once more Hitler calls for a halt. He commanded that the armored division should be split,one part will go to Leningrad and other will go to Kiev to trap a huge Russian force. The tasks take all summer, and then when the Russian winter came Hitler change his mind again, he decided to take Moscow after all. He ordered the forces he sent to the north and south to return to the center. By now Hitler controlled the strategy and tactics with tightness that the generals jokes that they cannot open the door without Hitler permission. The long delayed drive to Moscow begins,by now Russian women begin digging deep tanks trap outside Moscow. Then it begins to rain and the Germans paved road experienced something new, the Russian mud. The vehicles stuck on the mud and the German armies and tanks division cannot move on.

When finally turns winter and the tanks are able to move again, but then it turns unbelievably cold. The German had planned to win the war in one season and still they are in their Summer uniforms, the cold was horrible, even they are now stationed 35 km west of Moscow. The temperature so cold that it dropped 55degress below zero, and the wind was blowing. There was no way to move or to get the guns even the Russian planes are attacking them.

Hitler finally acknowledges the need for warm clothes, he collect it form German civilians and airdroped it to the front. In the 20km near Moscow the Germans was ordered to stop a complete halt for the attack due to exhaustion and cold. But the Russian counter attacked with their fresh armies from Siberia. They brought there new tank the T-34 which is better than the German tanks and their ski troops is a surprise. But the most surprising of all is how they used there man power, to clear the minefields, by droving cows through it and they did it also with man (soldiers). The soldier is in line arm in arm, behind them are machine guns and when they stepped on the mines they are blown-up. The Germans retreated.

Herman Goering surveyed the littered beach with his deputy general Gerhard Miuch. Miuch said there's no time to waste an invasion of Great Britain must began without delay. His plan is daring but simple, make a quick airborne attack on Britain. Paratroops and gliders will drop off on the south eastern cost of England and seize the key air fields so that the German fighter can land and re-fuel. A shuttle of smaller transports will bring five division of soldiers that will fan out to the country side and head for London to seized the government. Goering and Miuch take the plan to Hitler but Hitler rejected it, some says's out of respect for the British. Because Hitler's main ideas was in this time to divide Europe among great Britain and Germany. So he would not do too much harm to the British, because Hitler thinks that the British is so similar to the Germans both are high classes. But whatever the true reason, Hitler drag his heel in fighting England and looses his golden chance. Could Germany taken England ? the answer is simply yes. If the German just roars ahead then British people cannot defend themselves.Hitler address the Reichstag and offer a peace offering to the British, He sees no reason that the war should go on he said, his griaved for the sacrifices the it claims. But prime minister Winston Churchill answered that the British will fight on, until all European countries that are conquered are freed.

Privately Churchill tells Roosevelt that if Britain goes down, Hitler have a good chance in conquering the world. Dismay of Churchill's respond Hitler reluctantly ordered a massive cross channel invasion of England the operation is called Sea Lion. The general staff said that it could take place only if the British air force will be destroyed by the Luftwaffe (Germany air force). Only then that the invasion barges can be protected from the British navy. The army and navy will sits and wait while the air force fight it out. It is called the battle of Britain.

After two months of battle both sides are nearly exhaustion. The battle is the toughest battle of the war, it was a supportive fight where in the young people of two nations being so the same in making, same in education, they even look alike. engaged in a very fair but extremely tough fight. It was every desperately hard for the pilots. They even went to sleep even you're talking to them. It comes to a point, that even the sound of the telephone which is a direct line from the high command is depressing to them because they need to take off. And even they are half asleep they need to be airborne, and when they are in the sky they will see a massive dots (German airplanes) in the horizon.

When the Luftwaffe nearly destroying the royal air force, the necessary prelude for the massive cross channel invasion of England. Hitler issued another halt order, the Luftwaffe will abandon in destroying the RAF and start hitting cities. The RAF had given a providential chance to recover, it was Hitler's another major mistake. Why did Hitler make it? During that period the British made a few raids in Berlin and a couple of other cities, which made Hitler so infuriated, that he ordered a retaliatory attack on British cities, L particularly London. With that he increases heavy losses of the Luftwaffe. If Germany had persisted there sensible strategy they might certainly won. The British did not win the battle of Britain, only the German lost it. And that was Hitler's first major defeat.

1939, Hitler negotiated a treaty of the lions with the Soviet Union. Hitler installed to invade and divide Poland, and Russia is allowed to swallow the Baltic states Estonia, Latvia,and Lithuania.

Now Hitler's back is secured, he takes a giant step. On the first of September ignoring warnings from the aroused Britain and France he attacked Poland with masses of tanks leading are the stoker's screaming dive bombs, it is a new form of warfare a blitzkrieg.

The Polish horse cavalry valiantly and briefly charge the tanks. Britain and France declared war on Germany. Hitler was stunned but his foreign minister Joachim Von Ribbentrop stands besides him. Hitler did not intend to start WW2, he did not even intend to start a European war, he only proposed to have a nice little war to Poland, and that was he made his mistake, it was Hitler's first major miscalculation. He believed that France and Britain will never attack Germany having the Russian as his Allie which was confirmed by his foreign minister Joachim Von Ribbentrop, which had the great responsibility for the outbreak of WW2.

Ignoring the risk, Hitler planned an attack against France. At first the generals think the tactics that they used during WW1. An army in the north will slice through Netherlands and Belgium then to France. And the other army group in the center and from the south will exerts pressure. One maverick general Erich Von Manstein objected, he said that it is exactly what the allies expected, it will bag down into a trench warfare. Manstein wants to put the trust in the center, advance a massive number of tanks and drive in, into the center through the Ardennes forest, but Manstein was over ruled and sent away. By a chance Hitler invites a group of officers for lunch and Manstein is among them. He manages to present his plan directly to Hitler, and he accept it.

It was spring, the attack order was passed even though it was postponed for 29 times. This is the time to find out if the radical battle plan worked, and it does more than that. It writes the whole new chapter in the history of warfare. It finally happened in May 10 1940. The German armored division smashed across the border. Tanks are no longer used to support the infantry, instead they are allowed to strike with in their own massively, and stoker planes bombs to clear the path. The British and France do exactly what Manstein, had predicted they march into Belgium expecting the big attack to come that way. Instead the attack passes through beneath them. The French were surprised because they did not expect that the German will pass through the thick forest of Ardennes. But Hitler was worried of possible flank attack on the extended German columns. General Holdeir head of the general staff, said that Hitler worried that things are moving too fast. And Manstein say's that Hitler is bold in planning but timid in execution.

Meanwhile the German tanks raced into France in just incredible 10 days. And the two battle group closed in the town of Dunkirk from north and from the south. More than three hundred thousand allied soldiers and the entire British expeditionary forces are pin up to their back on the beach, an enormous victory is in sight for Germany. If the entire British army is captured Britain will be defenseless. But then something incredible happened, Hitler orders his tanks to halt and not only to halt but to pull back. General Guderian the panther leader is speechless and disappointed, they saw the success and the possibility to catch the British army. It was the very serious mistake of Hitler, that changed the course of the war.

When Hitler ask the enabling act he doesn't have the 2/3 majority vote. But he did not need to have one, he had the rest of the majority standing along the walls in brown shirts. And the party knew how they have to vote if they want to stay in good health. From the summer of 1933 and on, there was only one party, only the NAZI party.

After WW1, the tragedy was when Germany was defeated most of the Germans never accepted the fact. They believed in military victories and they could not understand why in the end they lost WW1. Then their was a propaganda states and defect, that they were betrayed. And who are responsible for this? and so they found an escape goats, most of all the German Jews. And the second very important aspect in the spirit supporting Hitler was that, the over warming majority of the Germans are not democrats, they did not understand what the democratically political system means. They believed in an authoritarian system, obedience, honor, and greatness of Germany. The parliamentarian system they did not like it very much, and they are always looking for a substitute emperor. It is very difficult for those who lived in a democracy to understand the specific condition of the authoritarian system, being manipulative and being educated for a specific way.

Hitler can seduced the people he was a phenomenon, when he started speaking he mesmerized the large audiences, he is a mass communicator. He did it by an easing intro on his face with a deep sonorous voice that was almost seductive. And in a crescendo it will keep on going, intensifying until in the end he is practically screaming.

Hitler came to power that radios are invented and he is using it in a very cleaver way. After one year when Hitler became a chancellor of Germany, they have this so called peoples receiver (a small radio). And each family is having this in their kitchen so Hitler can talked directly to his people. He was using the first time the media in a very cleaver way. The medium radio was a tremendous tool in his hands. With the country behind him he vows to reclaimed the territory that was lost by the German during WW1.

In 1936 he sent his troops to the Rhineland area bard by German forces by the Versailles treaty. Hitler's generals was afraid that the French with a much better equipped and bigger army will fight. But the French did not moved. If only the Allies do something currently, the major European war should be avoided and it was probably the end of Hitler. Next Hitler marched into Austria and then to Czechoslovakia. Britain and France protested but still they do nothing. Hitler had pull off a series of brilliant bluff against larger and stronger power who lack the will to confront him. Hitler gave back Germany approximately what they have lost in WW1 without any bloodshed but in peace.

More than 50 million people died in world war 2, hundreds of million are wounded, made homeless, hundred of cities are smashed and the costs are uncalculable. A half of a centuries had past but still we asked, why it should happened? There are no feuding monarchs, no trade wars, no arms races, no lack of communication among competing superpowers. And yet in 1939 the world light up in flames. and one man lighted the match, his name is Adolf Hitler.

For many of us the story is a simple one. American arms and American resourses won the war, this is the common held view, but there is a quite deferent view. That Hitler substantially won and then lost the war in Europe before America entered the war in the end of 1941. It was Hitler's military and political mistake tipped the balance towards the Allies. That if he did not have those mistakes America might stands alone against a NAZI Britain and a NAZI Europe, and faced the future we can barely imagine.

We know who won the war. But no story of WW2 can be told by not knowing and understanding of how Adolf Hitler was able to gain power and seized control of a cultured nation and some say's driven it insane. Hitler had unbelievable influence in the masses, he was a genius. And the big question is, why all the Germans followed him?

Adolf Hitler early life was a recipe of failure rather than fame. He was ugly and hostile child, some say's he was abused by his father (a minor official in an obscure Austrian town). Hitler grew up deprived from comfort, and deprived of love. In fact Hitler is a lousy student and had a terrible study habit with sequence of failures and basically lazy and this habits followed him throughout. Some of the important decision of WW2 could not be made because he was sleeping. At 11 o'clock in the day of Allied invasion in Normandy. The german commander in chief demanded that the armed forces high command releases the armored divisions that are standing the channel cost. But they could not get an answer, because Hitler could not be disturbed and was still a sleep.

Young Hitler's life are full of rejection. He drop-out from school and went to Vienna to become an artist. He scratched out a living by selling paintings that he made, to the tourist. Twice he enrolls in Vienna academy of fine arts, twice they turn him down. One of Hitler's great ambition is to be an architect or an artist. The course of world history would be changed if he was allowed to enter the academy to become a painter or an architect or both. But not a politician.

It was in 1918 the world war one is coming to an end, still a career ambition would be denied for Hitler. He served as an enlisted man during the war he has been wounded and decorated with the iron cross. He likes the army, he wants to stay in, but the army said no. The seed of Adolf Hitler future emerges from it shell in Munich. It was 1919, with no other career opened to him he decided to become a politician. Hitler came across a small party that did not have apparently any members, and had only a board originally. It was called the Germans workers party but later became National Socialist German Workers Party, the NAZI party. Hitler found something in this party that he particularly liked, it was extremely nationalistic and anti-Semitic . He became the speaker for the party and all of the sudden he found out that he could draw a crowd. His speeches basically focusing the same thing, that he was always the prosecuted person, Germany is always the victim.
The power begins in 1923 when Hitler and his followers tried to seized the government, but the coup fails. He was convicted of treason and sentenced to five years in prison, but he only served nine months. While in prison he wrote the book My Struggle an autobiography and he presented the master plan of astonishing boldness, the Jews would be eliminated. Germany will enslaved and kill the slugs, to provide a living space for the people from Germany in the east, at that time few read the book. Released from prison Hitler decided that the best way to achieved his goal is to destroy the system from with in. He bounds the country by airplane a noble thing to do at the time, and told the people that only the Nazi party can right the wrong that they suffered. He became an effective speaker, an intuitive politician he attracted money from rich men who think he may become a usefull tool. An election after election the Nazi lost but steadily gain political power.

By 1932 they win a third of the total vote and become the largest party in Germany. The aged president Paul von Hindenburg appoint chancellor after chancellor trying to form a majority to govern the bankrupted and divided country, but all failed. In 1933 it was Hitler turn, now he asks the legislator to pass an enabling act to give him dictatorial power for four years, tired and intimidated they pass it.

As I walk through the street of Manchester, I was fascinated with the architectural design of the buildings of the place. The facilities and the services that their government provided for them are much much farther than ours--- the tram, free newspaper (the METRO) to read, the gritting of the icy roads, the garbage disposal system (well segregated), etc. I did asked myself, how was they able to do that? Why this certain country is very progressive? To think that this country is not abundant in natural resources and the weather, ooh s***t, it's very terrible. Infact, 85% of their basic commodities were imported from other countries. Also, this country was devastated with two great wars wherein the capital and the other major cities of this country was put down to its knees, and yet here it is... very progressive. What do they have that we (Filipinos) do not have??? Do you know?

Our country is much much more abundant on such natural blessing and yet here we are. What is wrong with us? As I feel the fullness of my urinary bladder I try to look for a toilet but unfortunately I cannot find one. Is this place doesn't have the public toilet? I ask my self.

I was very desperate to empty my bladder thus I approached two police officers wearing high visibility vest. Curiosity arose again on my mind because these officers doesn't carry firearms unlike in our country that they always carry a pistol, and sometimes very show off their guns, specially those newly graduate officers. They then directed me where's the public toilet but I need to pay £0.30 before i could use it. You need to spend money before you can use the toilet in this country. But still you cannot find a single individual that urinated on the walls or in other places...Now I understand why this country is so progressive. THAT's BECAUSE THE PEOPLE IN THIS PLACE HAD SELF DISCIPLINE.
