Concept Album progress...

LATEST:

Tim (sound engineer/co-producer) and I are trying to figure out the best time (if any) this month to record song two from my latest concept concoction. At the same time this is going on, Tim is filling in his non-existent spare time, well... it's a simple task really... (NOT)... building his new sound studio! I will be helping him along the way. Quite a challenge to say the least! Yeah, things may get delayed a bit, but I don't give a rat's ass. As long as I am working on music, or am helping Tim build this beast - I am a happy camper.

If possible, I would like to be back in one of the studio's (most likely the one I've recorded in for the past 7 years) late this month. I was planning on using a song I recorded back in 2009 entitled "Below the Line" for song two, but after hearing how it worked with the overall theme of the entire rough draft of the concept album, I through it by the wayside. I may use it somewhere else in the concept album, or I may not use it at all. I am currently writing the new song (again, song two) now. I just completed a tiny, looped portion of the bass track last night. I will the drums and vocals in the days/weeks to come. This one is really gonna kick your cochlea's! "Blue", the main character, will be catapulted into sheer chaos soon after his glorious entrance into this world ("Blue Born" reflects beauty and blissfulness which precedes this). He will be marred and molded into "what is necessary" according to his parents. A most distressful and overwhelming time!

In the studio once again!

It's been a solid year since I last recorded at Studio Ballistico. And, oh, man does it feel great to be back!

I am working on my first concept album. I laid down the keyboard/drum tracks for "Intro" yesterday. This week will feature Erik on bass (Monday), David on guitar (Tuesday) and mixdown with Tim on Wednesday. I will be working on the next of an uncertain (perhaps infinite) amount of songs for this concept album in either December, or January. My plan is to have the entire concept album completed by December 2013.

Hi everyone! :)

KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN IS LIVE!

My Kickstarter campaign is up and running! It certainly was and continues to be a labor of love! The video alone took several months to create. To create the video, I first had to learn Premiere (video editing application) and, from there, piece it all together. A learning curve to say the least! Please help spread the word! CONCEPT ALBUM THEME:

The theme of this album is the conscious awakening of humanity. It's about being broken inside and out, getting to a point where suffering is no longer an option, and realizing the only choice is waking up and evolving out of unconsciousness. This is something I hold very close to my heart. If you believe in yourself entirely you will propel yourself into better and better states of mind. And the best part: everyone has this capability! Everyone benefits from this! You see a positive, highly energized person nearby, or on TV and immediately you feel different right? Different in a better, more positive way! Now that's what I'm talking about! Just make sure you allow yourself to feel it when you're around these types of people!

CONCEPT ALBUM PROGRESS:

The rough draft of the concept album nearly complete. The real trick with this one is where each song will fit in the overall timeline of the concept album. I will be sending the rough draft to Erik (bassist) this weekend to give him a head start.

Concept album progress II...

It's one thing to write an album and pay for all the production out of your own pocket (musician fee's, sound engineer fee's, CD prints and distribution, etc. I'm all too familiar with this one :~). It's another thing entirely to ask several dozen people you know and a majority you DO NOT know to help fund your future concept album!

I am currently finishing up editing the video to my future (soon to be public) Kickstarter campaign. The editing of this video has gone very well. What was tricky in the making of this video was having it gel with the overall theme of something I haven't completed musically/lyrically, or thematically just yet while gently prodding the 800 lb. virtual gorilla in the room - coaxing it to walk up each one of your magical computer monitor's with it's hand held out and asking for money. Not an easy feat! (No gorilla in the actual video :~P)

Samuel E. Kirkman (highly skilled illustrator/graphic novelist) and I have agreed to merge creatively on my future concept album endeavor. If you would like to view a couple of the rough sketches that Sam has already sent to me (a lot of other visual/audible samples will be available to you via my newsletter as we progress further), simply sign up on my mailing list! I am looking at a late winter/early spring 2013 release right now (iTunes, CDBaby, Spotify, Last.fm, etc). I also plan to have a nice physical CD and CD cover laden with Sam's amazing illustrations available around that time as well. I am very much looking forward to the rest of this year and the first half of 2013!

Sam and I are also talking about creating an online digital web comic reflecting the theme of my concept album. This will be a static, "one-time" digital comic (i.e. it will not be continually updated like most digital comic books do).

Concept album progress...

I am nearly two months into the concept album and I have already vetoed out 2 of the 24 nearly completed songs I was confident I would use. I am writing new material because I just can't handle some of my old songs (old = written in 2010). These songs just don't fit into what I am trying to create. I feel that these two will not be the only ones I remove. As I roll ahead and as the overall concept falls into place more and more, I most likely will discard more and more of my older material. I'm happy with this!

I am approaching this future double album in a whole new way. Sometimes I record the drums first, sometimes voice and sometimes keyboard. Depending on which is used determines how the song will end up sounding. An example of this is when I record drums first. I lay down a track of a simple beat. From this beat comes a basic melody. I record this melody over the drums and BOOM! The song explodes to life. This happened today and, as a result, I got a very cool song (reminiscent of U2's "Joshua Tree" album. Which is one of my favorite albums of all time!) came into existence. As far as where this song will appear in the grand scheme of things (within concept album) is still a mystery.

It's hard writing a concept album! Questions like: "what is the theme of this concept album?", "where will this song go within the concept album?", "should write the intro and work my through to the end, or what?", "will this song even fit within the theme lyrically?" all come to mind. These are just a few of the many!

My approach to recording this double album had to grow and unfold in a whole new way. No longer could I simply record each track (drums, keys and vocals) on my convenient little Tascam. Songs had to be butted up aside one another in order to hear how they would work within the whole. To achieve this I had to get creative. Software to the rescue! I had to "master" each rough draft from my Tascam and import them into my PC. From there I had to import them into the actual recording application and conveniently butt the songs against one another. Once this process was mastered I was in awe of what I could do using recording software! I'm still hesitant about recording directly into my PC one track at a time. At this point the aforementioned process works just fine.

I'm planning on recording at Ballistico in May for the release of another single. This time it will be from my future concept album. More songs will be released over the summer and fall. Exciting stuff!

Due to popular demand I have added some new T shirt designs and mug designs to my Zazzle store ("Phone Call to Infinity" and "Come of Age [New Sun]"). "Come of Age (New Sun)" design by none other than my wife.

WHAT'S NEXT?:

What is next is blowing my mind! I have 24 new songs - some completed, some not - that will be molded and crafted into a concept album. This is a daunting task to say the least! The concept album will be comprised of both instrumental and non-instrumental songs that I have written/will be writing (I may swap newer songs that I haven't even written yet for some of the older ones). The overall theme will be non-religious, spiritually-based and will really kick some serious ass when completed!

I will be releasing a few songs during 2012 that will be from the concept album.

I expect the whole enchilada to be completed some time in early 2013.

I may add a few talents to the mix. Dave and Erik will be the backbone. I will be writing all the lyric/song material, playing all drums parts, key parts and singing all vocals.

I will have to out do myself in 2014 with a quadruple CD concept album (only joking?)

"Come of Age (New Sun)" release date

"Come of Age (New Sun)", my latest song, is nearing completion!

As expected, the recording process at Studio Ballistico went smoothly. Erik Swanson (bass), Dave Bowers (guitar), Tim Sandusky (co-producer and sound engineer) and myself (singer/songwriter, drums, keyboards) spent a week crafting this song. "Come of Age (New Sun)" is layered with shifting tempos, intensity and serenity. I really love this one! Tim is feverishly working his magic mixing and mastering to make this song what it needs to be. I am looking at a release date of November 12th.

I will give all of you fine listeners a chance to listen and download the song in its entirety for free Friday, November 11th. Simply go to my site (ianmusic.com) and on the home page (main page) simply sign up to my mailing list on the upper left side of the main page. Tonight (Saturday, November 5th, 2011) is a very special night for me! My wife and I will be thoroughly enjoying The Musical Box' rendition of Genesis' 1974 masterpiece "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" at The Vic Theater in downtown Chicago. For one reason or another; I am not one of those who goes out of my way to see tribute bands very often, however, "The Musical Box" not only covers the music of Genesis precisely, they emulate all costumes, instruments, playing styles of the former members as well as, on occasion, have the actual members of Genesis jump up on stage and play along! Now that is how it is done! Phil Collins, when watching "The Musical Box" in Geneva (2005) commented, "they played it better than we did." And Peter Gabriel took his children to a show so, "they could see what their father used to do." I seriously and pumped for this!
All is good in the world and it's getting better every second!

New song to be released very, very soon!

OK....it's time. I can only wait so long before I have to get off my ass and record a new song. I will be recording a new song at Studio Ballistico with the same guy's starting next week. Both Erik (bass) and Dave (guitarist) now have the latest rough (and I mean rough) draft to work with prior to going into the studio.

This one is a bit different than the rest as it has a quicker tempo and has room for intense vocals. As always, this one has room for intense creativity as well which I always encourage to Erik, Dave and Tim and they never dissapoint! To put it simply: I am totally excited about this one!

I plan on having this song completed by the 23rd of this month. I will be releasing it for sale on my site as wel as CDBaby, Amazon, Napster, etc during the last week of this month, or early November.

The full length video "In the Studio with Ian Narcisi. The Making of Phone Call to Infinity" is still sitting there on my hard drive staring at me and sighing every so often. I don't blame it! I'd be pissed too if I was neglected for so long! I plan on getting this polished up and uploaded to YouTube by the end of this month, or early to mid November. It's almost complete. It just needs my fingers on the keyboard and time.

More songs are on the way in the upcoming months! I will keep you posted :~)!

In with the new...always

Ok...so the full-length video "In the Studio with Ian Narcisi. The Making of Phone Call to Infinity" still isn't out. I apologize for this. Mid October guaranteed.

I have contacted the "make-it-happen-with-creativity-and-spontaneity-crew" to record a single starting in mid October. I will be sending three or so rough drafts of my new songs to Tim to see which one he feels will work. 96.78888% of the time I agree with his decision and within a month we will have a completed song. I am just as excited as I have been for all the songs I have written in the past! I love this period of time in the creative process! Just knowing one of my songs will be sanded, polished and presented to the public is very exciting! This one will be a doosy! I'd like to be able to belt it out vocally like "Behind the Dawn" with more of an upbeat tempo. I may write a new song tomorrow just to get what I hear and want in my head. The 16 new songs I have on my hard drive recorder may not cut it. You will find out soon enough!

Such an odd day! Smoke in the air everywhere. When I first smelled the air I thought that there was some sort of chemical leak, or massive toxic fire occurring somewhere nearby. A guy I talked to at lunch thought the same. He shut his windows and doors to his business for fear of such an event. Ultimately it turned out to be a fire alright, but in northern....yeah get this.....MINNESOTA! The friggin' Boundary Waters were ablaze! And since a cold front (one of two) hit today, it brought with it cooler air, northerly winds and smoke from those fires! What was odd was that the smoke didn't smell like forest fire smoke. It smelled like cough syrup. Sweet and nasty. Anyway, yeah, that's what it was. Something that just doesn't happen around here everyday. The sunset, I later heard and expected, was amazing! Smoke in mass quantities always does amazing things to the sunsets! Volcanic events as well. Just the way light refracts off the smoke particles A must see!

Ok...I am nearing tome status here. Must go, watch something about space, astrophysics, meteorology, dendrochronology, or something with "ology" tailing it.....

Video, music and more!

Ok, here's the deal....

The full-length version of "In the Studio with Ian Narcisi. The Making of Phone Call to Infinity" has been pushed back to mid September. I have a lot going on in my life right now that is taking precedence over this labor of love.

My next visit to the studio looks to be somewhere around November. I am planning another 3 song EP that will most likely be released in January 2012.

I am planning another major road trip to the west. This time it looks like the target location is eastern California. Mileage should tally up to around 6,500 miles. Amount of photographs taken during this trip: about the same!

Life is cool....keep those eyes open and stay aware!

Well, it's getting closer to the official release of my full-length video entitled "In the Studio with Ian Narcisi: The making of 'Phone Call to Infinity'".

Today I have officially released the sneak peek version on my website (www.ianmusic.com). I am looking at mid to late August 2011 for the final release. I will host the final release on my site and YouTube as well.

MUSIC:

My plan is to start recording my next 3-song EP in October of this year. Too early to reveal a release date. I am thinking sometime in January 2012.

My video "In The Studio: A Documentary" is edging towards completion. It is looking more like mid to late July until I get this monster molded. I plan on releasing a 30 second "sneak peak" in the next week or two.

IN THE STUDIO DOCUMENTARY:

The audio/video editing for my upcoming documentary is still in the works. I figure late June, or early July before this is ready to be uploaded. This is my first attempt at editing such a large piece of work! I am enjoying it immensely!

NEXT APPROXIMATE RELEASE DATE:

Nothing in stone at this point. I would like to start in June on my next release. I'm planning on the "one-song-per-month" process as this is the most affordable and certainly allows for more time to focus on each song. This process worked very well for "Phone Call to Infinity". No plans at this point to play my music live, but I certainly can't rule this out. I still would love to record Dave, Erik, a drummer, and myself live with the magical, musical mind of Tim.

OTHER THINGS THAT ARE COMPLETELY UNRELATED:

Spring finally has arrived in Chicago! This past April was like a mix of February and March. May is looking and feeling more and more like May. My storm chasing alarms are beginning to chime again. I would love to get back out to the Plains in 2012! Hopefully I can! It's been since 2006 since I last chased.

Studio documentary video coming to a server near you

I haven't started this puppy yet, but my ultimate goal is to edit hours of video footage chop them up and neatly place them into a Studio Ballistico documentary video. The documentary video will reveal to the masses how creating a song in the studio is achieved. I picked "Five Below Nothing" from my latest EP "Phone Call to Infinity" (recorded in October of 2010) as the song used for the documentary. The footage will feature Erik Swanson (bass), Dave Bowers (guitar), Tim Sandusky (co-producer/sound engineer), and myself (drums, keyboards, vocals) in our natural habitat. Individual interviews, creative discussions and individual performance clips will all be intertwined within this upcoming documentary.

Not exactly sure when this will be released. I'm guessing late April '11, but will settle for August.

More songs are on the stove right now. Some are completely warm and ready to serve. Others are miles away from even the back burners (still at the grocery store). I'm looking at summer studio time and a late summer release.

"Phone Call To Infinity" is nearing completion. Currently my wife and I are working on the CD jacket design while Tim (sound engineer/co-producer) is working on mastering the 3 - song EP. I plan on having the physical EP for sale on my website (ianmusic.com), some time next week. I plan to have both the physical EP and digital EP/individual songs for sale on CD Baby and iTunes by the end of the month.

"Behind The Dawn" completed

Song 3 entitled "Behind The Dawn" was waxed and polished on Sunday. I recorded the drums, keys and vocals last on Sunday, November 14th, Erik laid down the bass track Wednesday, November 17th, Dave added his magic guitar playing (electric and acoustic) Thursday, November 18th and Tim and I mixed down and mastered the song Sunday, November 21st (Tim is absolutely amazing at what he does!). Now that all three songs ("Absent Today", "Five Below Nothing", and "Behind The Dawn") are finished, it's time to get this music out to the masses! My goal is to have my 3 song EP (not titled as of yet) released on my web site (www.ianmusic.com), CDBaby and iTunes either the second, or third week in December. I have yet to take the photo that will set the overall theme to this EP and my wife and I need some time to get all the graphics laid out, but, as always, we will get to it.

The HD video will have to wait as my PC (named "Bad Ass") took a dive. My new PC parts arrive Friday and I should have "Bad Ass II" (wow, how original!) built the same day. So, this weekend may be a video editing extravaganza! This would be perfect seeing that Chicago may have its first weekend covered in snow with high's this coming Friday in the 20's (we were in the 60's yesterday with tornadoes nearby!) Welcome to Chicago's winter! I love it! :~)

New song to be recorded next week!

Just to keep you all informed....

My website was down temporarily for maintenance purposes. All is good now!

I will be in the studio starting next week. I will have song 3 (yet to be titled) completed by the end of this month.

I will be releasing a 3 - song EP (yes, CD and all the fancy photography) mid to late next month. The three individual songs will also be available on iTunes and CDBaby.

Also, I will be previewing my "Five Below Nothing: The Creation Process" HD video late this month on my site.

Three song EP to be released mid December

A slight change in plan. My latest song which was completed last week entitled "Five Below Nothing" will not be released until mid December. It will be placed along side my recently released song "Absent Today" and my third song (to be recorded in mid November) and all will be released as one, big, happy EP. My plan is to print 50 EP CD's and have these available for purchase via my site (ianmusic.com), CDBaby and iTunes. And, like all the releases preceeding, I will be out, camera and all, finding the perfect shot for the cover. My wife and I will be designing the overall graphical theme for the CD and website. As far as digital downloads are concerned; my goal is to have my EP available digitally by mid to late December from the aforementioned sites.

...and there's plenty more where that came from: I have 15 other songs on the back burner! I have 10 hours of in-the-studio HD video which also includes live interviews with Tim, Erik, Dave and myself (I will be editing all this into a documentary some time in the winter) and I plan on releasing another 3 song EP in May 2011. So stay tuned! Let this music take you where you need to be......

Again now, don't forget: mid to late December = 3 song downloadable/physical CD release!
