Birds Of Paradise - Sex Noises

Sex Noises are a four-piece from Australia's capital who released their 7" 'Birds of Paradise' this new years day on Cinnamon Records. A nice dose of hardcore influenced punk makes me nostalgic about Bikini Kill and early Pixies and wanting to see them live asap. Sadly, at the moment all their shows take place on the opposite side of the planet. The vocals are energetic, (mostly) female and aggressive at times, however, 'Visions of Darkness' adds some humming and more delicate singing to the mix. Even though the choice is hard, I might risk saying the last track, 'Grim Reefer' is my favourite of Sex Noises' songs so far, purely because of it's Sonic Youth vibes. 'Birds of Paradise' is free to stream on Cinnamon Records bandcamp, where you can also buy the digital and vinyl version, with cover artwork by the singer/guitarist, Anja Loughhead. If discovering this band was as exciting for you as it was for me, you should also listen to and name your price for their first album 'Clovers' and check out other things released on Cinnamon Records.

Great News! The Manhattan Love Suicides are back!
(Never Stop) Hating You is the first song released by them for almost 5 years. With the simple noisy drums, fuzzy guitars and catchy female vocals you can probably place them somewhere between The Jesus and Mary Chain and Black Tambourine, if you haven't heard of The Manhattan Love Suicides before, then it will be hard not to take a liking to them. Starting out in 2006 and temporarily finishing in 2009 this four piece from Leeds will be one to look out for in the near future. They only have one UK date so far (The Oddbox Weekender 5th Birthday) however by the looks of things on their facebook page they are planning for an active year back and on top of playing shows again, they are releasing a new album (which we think will be released on on Squirrel Records) so keep an eye out.

'Sinking Feeling' is the first track off Gorgeous Bully's new EP 'Nobody Hates You As Much As You Hate Yourself' which will be released on Art is Hard on 17th of February. The four-piece, currently based in Manchester, opens their forthcoming release with a catchy, energetic lo-fi garage rock song. However, 'Across the EP's further four tracks, expect a celebration of misery, loneliness and self-loathing, perfectly molded into three minute grungey pop songs that celebrate the freedom of not doing what is expected of you' says Art is Hard. For tape enthusiasts, the EP is going to be released by the end of this week on a cassette "in a hand-stamped box that contains a lyric sheet, badges, a bottle opener/lighter, a download code for an MP3 version as well as a further secret EP". Human Hands are a Straford-Upon-Avon via Iceland based band (see facebook page description), however they tend to say they are from Birmingham to make things easier. They are an emo/punk band that really know how to get that feel of good old-school emo like that of Cap'n Jazz or maybe more recently on the midwest scene, Merchant Ships. At the start of the month they shared a song from their new upcoming LP being released on strictly no capital letters, Time as a Colour and Cross Your Heart and Hope to D.I.Y. Their latest song still has that fantastic cap'n jazz feel to it yet it seems much more melodic than their earlier stuff, you can almost relate it to that of the lulling guitars used in American Football. We are highly anticipating the rest of the LP which should be released at the end of this month so keep an eye on their bandcamp page where you can check out and download all their previous releases for free. Bassist and Singer (Chaz) also runs his own record label which is definitely worth a visit, which you can do here.

Where Do You Want - Brilliant Beast

Brilliant Beast are a Minneapolis based band 'led by sibling dual-vocalists Hannah (vocals, guitar, violin) and Jordan Porter (vocals, guitar) and anchored by the breakneck rhythm section of Mark Kartarik (bass) and Eric Whalen (drums)'. They released their album 'Where Do You Want' a few days ago on my favourite Guilt Ridden Pop (thanks for all the fantastic submissions guys!). There are some shoegazey bits with a lot of fuzzy guitars, overall it's fairly easy listening with clear power-pop influences. Definitely worth giving them a listen, the catchy melodies will get stuck in your head so I expect that re-listening will be necessary. I probably already listened to my favourite track, 'Dead Man', a bit too much. You can stream and order the album on bandcamp .

The Sunny Street, formed in 2006, are a twee band from London and this is the video for their newest track 'Esteban' from 'Sacred and Profane', their third, forthcoming album. Elusive female vocals filled with melancholy, my absolute weakness, seem to be perfect for late january nights (or, for me, any other time really). The discography can be found and bought on the Sunny Street's badcamp, including their recent single 'Cygnet' released on the christmas eve and band's last full length album 'Hidden for Decades', along with my personal favourite, track called 'Hit', which is bands first recording available on bandcamp.

Yet another thing to hear from Old Blackberry Way and another interesting project from Minneapolis I found out about in last few months. 'Light Lunch' is the title track from the debut 12" EP by Heavy Deeds, which is going to be the third release on their vinyl imprint (out early 2013), limited to 150 hand-screened copies, and, as usually, with design and printing by Casey Deming, whose works you can check out at aptlull.com. Band features members of Polica and Pony Trash (I wrote about their self-titled ep in october). Give a listen to their debut single with a very positive classic rock feel and catchy vocals.

Las Robertas are three piece band from San José, Costa Rica. They released their debut full-lenght album 'Cry Out Loud' (buy here) over 2 years ago and now they are back with a new single. Alex Zhang Hungtai aka Dirty Beaches made a video for his track 'Neon Gods and Funeral Strippers' that appeared on recently released on Clan Destine Records split LP 'Statement' featuring Ela Orleans, U.S. Girls and Slim Twig. ('Statement' can be ordered here).
The video seems to be an apt extension to the feelings conveyed in the track, which Hungtai describes as "a meditation on childhood memories: of the night market food stands, neon lights that covered the streets at night, riding in front of my NOW brother in law's motorcycle as a kid."

'Atlantic Blue' is Gospel Gossip's newest 7" released on Guilt Ridden Pop on November 3rd and recorded by Neil Weir at Old Blackberry Way. Both label and the studio, as well as the band are Minneapolis based and seem to very strongly contribute the local music scene.
The three new songs can be bought on crystal-clear vinyl with hand-printed sleeves by Casey Deming or streamed in full length on Gospel Gossip's bandcamp. Although all together the songs seem to have in common certain degree of melancholic feel, each of them seem to relate to a slightly different styles from shoegaze, noise and trash to 80s post-punk and new wave.

Just couple hours ago Wild Nothing shared a new video for the dreamy 'Paradise' from his last album 'Nocturne'. The beautiful clip stars Michelle Williams ('My Week With Marylin', 'Shutter Island', 'Brokeback Mountain', 'Blue Valentine'), who also did a voiceover for this edit of the track- reading from Iris Murdoch's 1975 novel 'A Word Child'. Directed by Matt Amato and filmed in L.A. and Niagara Falls, the video comely grasps the elusive feeling of the song.

I got introduced to Pony Trash about 10 days ago but only now I got to finally write about them. I already managed to listen to their debut self-titled EP couple of times though. It's out on November 27th on new Minneapolis-based The Old Blackberry Way as the label's first release. Pony Trash is an essential listen for anyone who loves hazy, guitar focused tracks with flowing vocals. This psych shoeagaze band can boast a pretty impressive manning- it consists of members of The Chambermaids, Polica and Gospel Gossip. I really recommend to give Pony Trash a listen- full stream is available on their bandcamp, where you can also pre-order the release with amazing hand-printed artwork by Casey Deming. Moreover, you can watch the new video for 'The Weight of the Night' below.

Cohen's music is similar to the last work he did with Deerhoof, The Runners Four, although the record carries a heavy psychedelia influence, and stand-out track 'Caller no.99' recalls a tamed Tame Impala.
