What Is a Tot Book?

The Tot-Book was developed originally in 2008 for my then 2 year old son who was obsessed with the movie Cars. He carried around his Cars Tot-Book and had fun learning shapes, colors, his name, and more because his friend McQueen was “teaching” him.

A Tot Book is a simple hands-on lapbook designed specifically for toddlers and young preschoolers. Instead of overwhelming little learners with big workbooks, a tot book organizes interactive pieces inside a simple file folder. Many tots love to have their own learning supplies like this and when you choose a theme your tot already loves it’s even better!

How to Assemble a Tot Book (VIDEO)

• File Folder Layout:
  • Cut a standard-sized file folder in half and fold the right and left side flaps in so they meet in the middle.
  • Staple an extra folder piece onto the back to create a worksheet pocket and add sturdiness.
• Tot Pack Expansion Option:
  • To expand into a full Tot Pack, store all activities in a full-sized file folder or a Ziploc bag. Use paper clips to hold cards in pockets.

• Monkey Parts
  • Pocket cards that prompt children to compare monkey body parts to their own (e.g., “Monkey has a head. Do you have a head?”, ears, nose, mouth, tail, legs, feet, arms).

  • An accordion book/cards teaching shapes: square, heart, triangle, circle, diamond, rectangle, hexagon, and star.

  • An editable mini name book. You type your child’s name into the PDF before printing.

Why You’ll Love This Alphabet Matching Activity

Early childhood educators and homeschooling parents know that worksheets can sometimes feel tedious for young minds. That’s why interactive matching games are so powerful!

This 3-piece pencil puzzle challenges children to connect three crucial foundational skills:

  2. Laminate the sheets to ensure they survive plenty of enthusiastic little hands.
  3. Cut along the dotted lines to separate each pencil into three distinct pieces.
  4. Scramble the pieces on a table or in a sensory bin, and let the matching fun begin!

Ways to Play and Learn

Depending on where your child or students are in their learning journey, you can easily adapt this activity to fit their needs:

• Modify for Two-Piece Matching: If your little learners aren’t quite ready to work on beginning sounds yet, simply don’t cut off the pencil tip! Cut out the uppercase eraser piece, but leave the lowercase middle section and the object tip attached as one larger piece. This allows kids to focus strictly on matching uppercase and lowercase letters without being overwhelmed by the phonics component.
• For Beginners: Start small! Give your child just 3 to 5 letters at a time (like A, B, and C). Let them master those before adding more pencils to the pile.

What Ages is Compass Classroom Best For?

One of the things I appreciate most about Compass Classroom is the wide range of ages and grade levels it serves. Many of the courses are designed with middle school and high school students in mind, making them especially helpful for families navigating the upper grades. Courses like Dave Raymond’s History, Devotional Biology, and American Literature are perfect for teens in grades 7–12. But Compass Classroom doesn’t leave younger learners out; programs like Visual Latin and Word Up! are great starting points for kids as young as upper elementary. The membership makes it easy to use the platform for multiple children at different levels, which is a huge win for busy homeschool families. I highly recommend this platform for homeschool families with at least one child in middle school or high school; it truly shines in those years.

My Personal Favorites That We Have Used

Here are the courses that found a place in our homeschool.

Spanish Grammar From Latin Roots – My son completed this course in 11th grade. 

Devotional Biology – A beautiful convergence of scientific exploration and spiritual reflection that inspires wonder at creation. My daughter completed this course in 10th grade. This is one of my very favorite Compass Classroom courses. I did it alongside of my daughter, and I learned so much.

F.O.R.M. – A well-rounded health & PE program emphasizing body stewardship, rest, and optimal living. My daughter completed this course for 11th grade and learned a lot.

American Literature – A thoughtful exploration of classic prose and poetry through a Christian lens. My daughter completed this course for 11th grade.

Visual Latin – Visual and memorable, this Latin program has been a favorite for effective, fun language learning. My daughter completed this course in 11th grade.

Word Up! – A vocabulary-building series bursting with humor, music, and mnemonics that help words stick. My daughter completed this series in 7th/8th grade and loved it.

Dave Raymond’s History – Masterfully delivered, worldview-rich narratives that make history come alive. My daughter completed American History in 8th/9th grade, and my son did Modernity in 11th grade. I love these courses!

Would I be able to teach it well enough?

Looking back now, after using Teaching Textbooks Math with all three of my children from elementary through high school, I can confidently say: it worked, and it worked beautifully.

One Program, Three Different Learners

Each of my kids learns differently, which can make homeschooling a challenge. But Teaching Textbooks met each of them right where they were.

Instead of trying to force a one-size-fits-all approach, the program allowed them to move at their own pace. If they needed extra time on a concept, they could take it. If they understood something quickly, they could keep moving forward.

• My oldest son now works in robotics, using problem-solving and logical thinking skills he built over the years. Not only does he work in robotics, he is also the youngest manager with a huge company. He worked his way up from the bottom and now has a very impressive career at age 24.
• My middle son is currently in college studying nursing, where a solid math foundation is essential. He is double-majoring in nursing and medical biology, making his major more of a pre-med focus.
• My youngest daughter is finishing her final year with Teaching Textbooks right now, and she’s confident and capable as she prepares for what’s next. She will attend community college in the fall for dual enrollment and take her next math class there!

Seeing all three of them take what they learned and apply it in real-life paths has been incredibly rewarding.
