Math is one of the most important—and sometimes most intimidating—subjects for homeschoolers. With so many different approaches available, from hands-on manipulatives to story-based adventures and self-paced online programs, it can be hard to decide which math curriculum is best for your child.

As a homeschooler for over 20 years with my three kids, I have seen and used a lot of homeschool curriculum. This series of posts began with grammar, then spelling, writing, and now we are focusing on math.

Below, I’ll compare popular homeschool math programs, sharing their approach, target grades, strengths, and considerations to help you find the right fit for your family.

First, you’ll see the math programs we used in our homeschool, and then other math curricula available.

It’s no secret that we love Teaching Textbooks math. Prior to using TT, we looked at many options but once we tried TT, we never looked back. My kids have used Teaching Textbooks math from Level 3 all the way through high school. My daughter is currently finishing up Algebra 2.

I have written a few posts about Teaching Textbooks over the years. Thankfully, they became a blog sponsor after I had already been using them for years. It was a win-win, I got paid to share about a homeschool program I had already purchased myself and had been using and loved. We used Life of Fred as a supplement during the early elementary years. Here’s a review I wrote about Life of Fred. I highly recommend adding these wonderful books to your homeschool, at least in the early years. They can be used alongside whatever math program you’re using (or even stand alone; we just chose to use them as a supplement).

Below are math programs we have not personally used. If I were starting over again with my kids, I would most likely try All About Math or Math with Confidence for the grades before Teaching Textbooks begins. Neither program was available when my kids were that age.

Squishmallow Halloween Cut & Glue

Inside the printable, you’ll find:

• A Jack-o’-Lantern Squishmallow
• A Candy Corn Squishmallow

Why I Chose This Curriculum:

We have never used a full literature curriculum! I usually pick and choose novel studies and just do things my own way. My daughter was up for the challenge of a reading-heavy course this year, and after much research, I landed on this one. Compass Classroom kindly offers us access to their library of courses, and I was so excited to find this there. A few key components appealed to me: video-based, book selections, short story selections, Christian-focused, & online dashboard.

I am not planning on her doing all of the writing assignments since she will also be doing IEW Writing. She also will not be doing the thesis project. We are mainly using this course for the books, short stories, and poems.

Lesson Plans

They provide lesson plans, but honestly, they confuse me. Creating my own allows me to dig deep into a course and fully understand assignments before the year begins. When kids learn independently, this helps me stay on track as a homeschool mom.

You are welcome to download and use these, also. There is a cover sheet for a binder as well. There is a one page year-at-a-glance and also detailed lessons by unit. These are copied almost directly from the course itself (minus the thesis assignments since we aren’t doing those), just formatted in a way that makes sense to my brain!

What’s Included

This printable features:

• Blank apple tree templates, which can be assembled into a book or left individually.
• Cut-out apples with addition facts (sums up to 10)

Students will love “picking” the right apples and “hanging” them on their trees as they solve each math fact.

How to Use the Printable

1. Print and Cut – Print out the apple trees and apples. You may want to laminate them for durability if you plan to reuse them.
2. Solve and Match – Have students read each apple’s addition fact and place it on the tree with the matching sum. For example, the apple with 5+2 goes on the tree labeled “7”.
3. Extension Idea – Hide the apples around the room and turn it into an apple hunt before solving the facts!
