WiMax, LTE Should Merge, Intel Exec Proposes

The next generation of mobile broadband access is shaping up to be a showdown between WiMax and Long Term Evolution (LTE), with one technology winning and the other potentially going the way of Betamax or HD DVD. But one executive from Intel said customers would be better off if the 4G services were unified.

"In our view they ought to be harmonized," Sean Maloney, head of sales and marketing at Intel, told reporters on Wednesday at the Computex show in Taiwan. The major concern Maloney cited was confusion among consumers between the two competing technologies.

"We would much prefer to see over a period of time that it looked to a global consumer that simply high-speed bandwidth was available," Maloney said.

Both standards are faster than the existing mobile broadband networks, but LTE is expected to offer higher speeds than WiMax.

Unlike rivals GSM and CDMA, both 4G networks are based on OFDM, so a unified standard is possible. Motorola has said 85% of the technology and work for WiMax equipment will be reused in its designs for LTE equipment.

Intel, which has been a staunch investor in WiMax technologies, is introducing processors later this year for WiMax that could technically be used for LTE, although Maloney said that wasn't in the company's plans.

WiMax networks and products should be rolled out by the end of the year. Chief proponents include Sprint, Google, Intel, and Time Warner.

LTE, on the other hand, isn't expected to be rolled out until 2010 at the earliest. But the majority of wireless carriers are backing it for their 4G networks.

Amazon.com site fails for 2 hours, cause unknown

BOSTON (Reuters) - Online retailer Amazon.com Inc said its U.S. website was down for about 2 hours on Friday but said it was unsure what had blocked access to the world's biggest online store. An Amazon spokeswoman said the site was unavailable for a couple of hours starting at around 10:25 a.m. California time (1725 GMT). Web monitoring company Keynote put the outage at 2-1/2 hours and said the site was fully back up just before 1 p.m. in California (2000 GMT).

Users in the United States who tried signing onto the popular portal during the outage saw a message saying the service was unavailable. It urged shoppers who were making purchases when it went down to check back later to see if the sales had been properly rung up.

While the cause of the outage remained unclear as of Friday afternoon, one expert said it was likely due to the sheer complexity of the site, which tailors content to visitors depending on factors such as their location, purchase history and behavior during previous visits.

"Amazon is one of the most complex retail sites online today. The more complex something is, the more likely it is to break," said Shawn White, director of operations with Keynote.

He said that less likely scenarios were that the site could have collapsed if it were suddenly overwhelmed by a surge in traffic or succumbed to an attack by hackers.

Those scenarios were less likely, White said, because Amazon has plenty of expertise in dealing with heavy traffic and protecting itself against criminals.

Amazon's international sites, such as amazon.co.jp, amazon.co.uk and amazon.de, were not affected, nor was its online storage service or other Web services that it sells to computer programmers, the company's spokeswoman said.

But Web surfers who tried to access amazon.com, from the United Kingdom and Germany to India, said they were unable to connect with the company's U.S. flagship site.

Internet content delivery company Akamai Technologies Inc, which counts Amazon among its customers, had no problems with its network on Friday, said Akamai spokesman Jeff Young.

Amazon shares fell 4.6 percent to close at $80.63 on the Nasdaq. Akamai shares fell 4.9 percent to $37.38.

Malaysians turn to Internet to fight fuel hike

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysians have turned to the Internet to vent their anger at one of the biggest hikes in fuel prices, and some are using it to rally support against the measure in a country with tight restrictions on street protests. Much of the rage was directed against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, already fighting for political survival since leading his ruling coalition to its worst election showing in March.

"We used to think you were nice. Now you are just nasty, plain nasty," read a post from someone calling himself a "hungry Malaysian" on rockybru.blogspot.co, arguing there was going to be less food on the table for millions of poor people.

A post on apanama blog said "it was a matter of time before Abdullah was given the proverbial pink slip in UMNO" or the United Malays National Organization.

Some have taken the battle into the government's camp. A hacker tried to deface the official website of the prime minister's office, the pro-government New Straits Times said.

The hacker left a drawing of a skull with a sword through its neck, blaming the prime minister for the fuel rise, the newspaper said. There was a notice later put up on the website www.pmo.gov.my saying it had been temporarily shut down for maintenance, it said.

The government raised petrol prices this week by 41 percent and diesel by 63 percent, in line with a global surge in oil prices. It said the measure would save 13.7 billion ringgit ($4.23 billion) as part of a broad overhaul of its energy system.

But Malaysians are questioning why they have to face a steep rise in prices when the country, Asia's largest net oil exporter, earns 250 million ringgit ($76.76 million) a year in revenue for every $1 rise in crude prices.

"Simple logic: As an exporter of fuel, how can fuel price increase hurt us? Why, why, why?" read one comment on rockybru.

Unlike in neighboring Indonesia, India and countries in Europe where there have been mass protests, attempts to organize mass demonstrations have met with limited success in Malaysia.

Protests have been scattered and small, but the opposition has called its biggest one yet on July 12, when it plans to bring 100,000 to the capital's centre.

"Support is there. I have received so many SMSs and calls about this issue," Salahuddin Ayub, leader of the youth wing of the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), the main Islamist party told reporters on Saturday. Some 10,000 people are expected to attend a protest next Friday, he said.

The government has said it will act against people taking part in illegal demonstrations, the pro-government Star newspaper reported, quoting Home Minister Seri Syed Hamid.

Under the rules, organizers have to obtain a permit from the authorities before holding any assembly of people.

T-Mobile sues Starbucks over AT&T Internet deal

NEW YORK (Reuters) - T-Mobile USA is suing Starbucks, saying the coffee shop chain secretly colluded with AT&T to offer free WiFi Internet access in its cafes despite an exclusive agreement with T-Mobile.

In the lawsuit, filed late on Thursday in New York state court, T-Mobile alleges that AT&T and Starbucks Corp are not living up to an agreement the three companies reached over how Starbucks should transfer from its T-Mobile partnership to a new partnership with AT&T announced earlier this year.

T-Mobile is seeking unspecified damages against Starbucks for breach of its contract and unfair competition.

According to a transition agreement reached in February, T-Mobile was given the exclusive right to "sell, market and promote its services" in Starbucks stores until those stores were fully converted to the AT&T system, the lawsuit said.

Starbucks stores would be converted "on a market-to-market basis" and T-Mobile was to retain the exclusive right to market and sell its Internet services until a market had been fully converted, the lawsuit said.

"T-Mobile had made a very significant investment in the technology and equipment necessary to provide Wi-Fi service in the many thousands of Starbucks stores in the United States," the lawsuit said.

AT&T therefore benefited from the agreement prematurely and at the expense of T-Mobile, the lawsuit said.

"Starbucks and AT&T ... secretly developed a promotional plan under which they would offer 'free' AT&T/Starbucks Wi-Fi even in stores" that were still reliant on T-Mobile's infrastructure, the lawsuit said.

"Our goal is to ensure Wi-Fi access at all Starbucks locations. This is a benefit offered to our Starbucks Card Rewards members as well as AT&T subscribers and steps are being taken to ensure that this access continues," Starbucks spokeswoman Stacey Krum said.

According to the lawsuit, "To date, only two markets -- the San Antonio, Texas, and Bakersfield, California, markets -- have been transitioned from T-Mobile to AT&T."

T-Mobile is a unit of Germany's Deutsche Telekom.

Google tops profit target, stock jumps

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Internet leader Google Inc said on Thursday it saw no impact from a weakening U.S. economy as it posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit and waved off fears of an online advertising slump.

Google's hard-hit shares surged 18 percent above $500 -- a level last seen in February -- as the company showed signs of better cost control and earned more revenue abroad than at home for the first time, partly because of the weak dollar.

"It's clear to us that we're well positioned for 2008 and beyond, regardless of the business environment that we find ourselves surrounded by," Chairman and Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told investors on a conference call.

Google, one of the hottest technology stocks of 2007, had seen its shares erase last year's 50 percent gain since the start of 2008 on investor concerns that the online ad industry was maturing and vulnerable to a U.S. economic downturn.

"It's a good time to be a Google bull," said Colin Gillis, an analyst with Canaccord Adams. "The boys delivered."

But Cowen & Co analyst Jim Friedland said the surge in the shares was not based on dramatic improvements in Google's growth outlook, simply on relief that the economy was not dragging down the company's results as had been feared.

"It was sort of an uneventful quarter other than taking a major concern -- the economy -- off the table," he said.

First-quarter net income rose to $1.31 billion, or $4.12 per diluted share, from $1 billion, or $3.18 per share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time items and stock option expenses, profit was $4.84 per share, comfortably ahead of the average Wall Street forecast of $4.53 on Reuters Estimates.

Gross revenue rose 42 percent to $5.19 billion, just ahead of Wall Street targets. By contrast, Google's revenue grew at a 63 percent rate in the same quarter a year ago.

International revenue accounted for 51 percent of the total, surpassing U.S. revenue for the first time and powering the company's results. Translating overseas sales into a weaker dollar helped boost Google revenue by nearly 4 percent.

Google's performance may strengthen Yahoo Inc in its efforts to wring a higher takeover offer from would-be buyer Microsoft Corp.

"This signals that the online advertising market is still healthy, which should help Yahoo get a better price for its company if it does decide to sell to Microsoft," said Peter Dunay, chief investment strategist at broker-dealer Meridian Equity Partners.

BETTER THAN FEARED

Google has been the subject of intense Wall Street debate over whether recent comScore data showing Google having trouble converting Web searchers into ad viewers is an indication its best days of growth are behind it.

Paid clicks, a measure of how often users of its Web search click on ads tied to search results, rose 4 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007 and grew 20 percent from a year ago.

"Clearly the area that Google was trying to focus on -- having more relevant searches -- is working," Global Crown Capital analyst Martin Pyykkonen said.

Measured on clicks, Google's performance was better than feared, but a far cry from a year ago, when the number of Google users clicking away grew 52 percent on the year before.

Some of the slowing growth is self-inflicted. Since August, officials say Google has been axing low-performing ads in order to encourage clicks on more meaningful ads at higher rates.

Google's traffic acquisition costs -- the cut of advertising revenue paid out to affiliated sites that run its ads -- amounted to 29 percent of ad revenue in the first quarter. A year ago, the proportion was 31 percent.

Google closed a $3.4 billion acquisition of ad technology company DoubleClick in March. The move strengthened its position against Yahoo and Microsoft in the market for online brand advertising preferred by corporate marketers.

Co-founder Sergey Brin said in a phone interview that the company aimed this quarter to link up DoubleClick's system for buying and selling online display ads with Google's own AdSense system for buying and selling other types of online ads.

"We really feel we're in a position to become the world's largest display ads provider," added Jonathan Rosenberg, Google's senior vice president for product management.

Google shares shot up to $529.38 in extended trading from its close of $449.54 on the Nasdaq earlier on Thursday.

Helping that rebound, Schmidt said Google was confident its targeted advertising could withstand most economic scenarios.

"On the macro side we've looked at this really carefully and we do not see an impact as of this time," Schmidt told analysts and investors on the quarterly conference call.

"Our conclusion is that we're well positioned, should economics change, to continue to do well because our model is so targeted and targeted advertising does well in pretty much most scenarios, we think."

Cartoon Network taking time with multiplayer game

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - They are two ends of the video game spectrum: the tiny, personal-sized casual game on one end and, on the other, the complex, massive multiplayer online game (MMOG) which can support thousands of players simultaneously. Rarely, if ever, do the twain meet. Until now.

The Cartoon Network is about to release a video game oxymoron ... what it calls a "casual MMOG." And it may just be the first of a trend.

Back in April 2006, Disney's "Toontown" had captured only 0.9% of the MMOG market since its launch in June, 2003, but that was enough to convince rival Cartoon Network to cook up an MMOG of its own that it planned to release this spring.

But here it is, the spring of 2008, and the release of Cartoon Network's "FusionFall" MMOG has been delayed twice, first to this summer, and now to this fall, for reasons no one at Cartoon Network chooses to discuss.

"Let's just say that MMOs are very deep, very large games that are ready when they are ready," says Chris Waldron, the game's executive producer. "They take a lot of testing, a lot of polish, and that's what we're going through."

Indeed, Cartoon Network is under a lot of pressure to "get it right" and to clearly differentiate "FusionFall" from the competition in what some describe as a very cluttered, perhaps over-saturated MMOG market.

"When we started building 'FusionFall,' 'Toontown' was the only kids MMO," notes Waldron. "Since then, we've seen a proliferation of MMOs targeting the same young demographic as ours, including 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' 'RuneScape,' and even social games like 'Club Penguin' and 'Habbo Hotel.' So, yeah, it's getting crowded out there and there are many more in the works so it's getting even more crowded. But I honestly believe that ours is a different kind of game."

Which is why Paul Condolora is calling 'FusionFall' a "casual MMOG, one that's easy to get into, very accessible, and doesn't require the time commitment that some of the more hardcore MMOGs demand." Condolora is senior VP and general manager of Cartoon Network New Media.

"We've designed a game that is best for our core audience," he adds, "and we need to be sensitive to the limited amount of time that kids and tweens can devote to a game, which is where the nature of casual gaming comes into play."

In actuality, "FusionFall" is meant to appeal to kids aged 8-14, a slightly older audience that Cartoon Network's core audience of 6-11-year olds, according to Waldron, who says the strategy is designed to expand the current demographic.

"To do that, we've incorporated 52 of the popular characters from 11 of the TV shows in the Cartoon Network universe with which gamers can interact, but we've advanced their ages a bit and we're depicting them in an anime style," he says.

"For instance, Dexter -- from the show 'Dexter's Laboratory' -- is known as a young, very short, elementary school kid. But, in 'FusionFall,' he's older and going to high school. Likewise, the Powerpuff Girls are no longer in kindergarten but are in junior high. It's sort of like reading the Harry Potter books and having the characters grow as the reader is growing. I think that is one of the appeals of the book series."

Another differentiator, says Waldron, is that while most traditional MMOGs are role-playing games (RPGs) in nature "with lots of stats and number-crunching," 'FusionFall' features "platform-style" action, meaning the running, jumping, and shooting that are a feature in many popular casual or arcade games.

"The gamer's skills that have to do with moving around and fighting are much more important here than their character's stats," he explains. "We're not building a game for hardcore gamers who will spend 60-plus hours a week here. If you think of those as hour-long dramas on TV, we want to be the half-hour sitcom. All of our missions are built in a way that they can be completed in 30 minutes at most. That get-in-and-get-out style of play is what makes casual gaming so popular, and we hope it is what will make 'FusionFall' popular."

Similarly, the anime style of art reflects Cartoon Network's plan to create an international game that will also appeal to an Asian audience.

"In fact, our developer is Seoul, Korea-based Grigon Entertainment, best known for its popular MMO 'Seal Online,' " notes Condolora. "We selected them for two reasons. The first is that Korea is arguably the world leader in MMOs. And, second, the casual and cartoony nature of Korean MMOs is very simpatico with the Cartoon Network sensibility."

When "FusionFall" eventually launches, it's still not clear how it will be monetized -- through subscriptions, advertising, micro-transactions, or a combination of the three. Condolora chooses not to elaborate on his business plan which "is still being evaluated."

"I'm pretty certain, however, that it won't be a 'one-size-fits-all' model," he explains. "While, in this country, our business model may mirror what is most common in the U.S. today -- which is a subscription-based product -- outside of the U.S., we intend to tailor our business model to the dominant models in other countries. Which means our revenue may come from subscriptions here, but, say, in Asia, it could be micro-transactions which are most popular there. As for advertising, I don't think that's the dominant model anywhere."

Regardless how "FusionFall" is monetized, Condolora says he expects the MMOG to be successful by virtue of the casual style of gameplay that will be its hallmark.

"And I believe this will become a trend in the MMOG space," he says. "Casual gaming is growing in popularity and I suspect that MMOs will latch onto that -- in terms of their accessibility and playability as well as the time required to get into a game and enjoy it. It very well may be the next big thing, you'll see."

New music video Web site features major label artists

LOS ANGELES - A company backed by investors including Will Smith and major record labels has launched a new Web site offering 10,000 free, high-definition music videos.

Universal Music Group announced Wednesday that it has joined EMI and Sony BMG in backing Santa Monica-based PluggedIn.

The Web site features music videos from artists such as Gwen Stefani, Green Day, Coldplay and Norah Jones and is powered by a new media player that supports full-screen high-definition video.

PluggedIn also announced a partnership with Smith's production and management company Overbrook Entertainment.

The film is being written by Russell Gewirtz who previously scripted Inside Man and will be produced by Avi Lerner, Daniel Rosenberg (who Executive Produced and developed "Inside Man" with Gewirtz), Boaz Davidson, Lati Grobman and Randall Emmett. The plot will revolve around police investigators hunting a vigilante killer. Righteous Kill will have a budget of $60 million and be an independent production put together by Nu Image's Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films. The film is set to begin shooting August 2007 in New York and Bridgeport, Norwalk, Stamford and New Haven, Connecticut. It was announced that Brian Dennehy will also appear in the film, as well as Frank John Hughes (Band of Brothers), John Leguizamo, Dan Futterman, Trilby Glover, professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek, and Terry Serpico (Rescue Me).

Plot :
The film follows Smith (Clive Owen), a drifter with an extensive military background and a fondness for carrots who wants nothing more than to be left alone. Smith finds himself embroiled in a complex political conspiracy once he aids a pregnant woman who is being chased by a hitman. He takes the baby and goes on the run with a lactating prostitute (Monica Bellucci). The unlikely family is trailed by the intelligent and ruthless Hertz (Paul Giamatti) and his army of thugs. A myriad of elaborate gunfights ensue, between which Smith pieces together the story. A United States Senator who strongly supports gun control had been breeding babies for their bone marrow to treat his cancer; a prominent gun manufacturer has contracted Hertz to kill the babies.

Plot :
Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a young man with natural racing instincts whose goal is to win The Crucible, a cross-country car racing rally that took the life of his older brother, Rex Racer (Scott Porter). Speed is loyal to the family business, run by his parents Pops (John Goodman) and Mom (Susan Sarandon). Pops designed Speed's car, the Mach 5. The owner of Royalton Industries (Roger Allam) makes Speed a lucrative offer, Speed rejects the offer, angering the owner. Speed also uncovers a secret that top corporate interests, including Royalton, are fixing races and cheating to gain profit. With the offer to Speed denied, Royalton wants to ensure that Speed will not win races. Speed finds support from his parents and his girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci) and enters The Crucible in a partnership with his one-time rival, Racer X (Matthew Fox), seeking to rescue his family's business and the racing sport itself.
