Broomstick Lace Crochet Bracelet Pattern

Crochet Pattern

When I first saw a photo of the Broomstick Lace bracelet I made four bracelets in different colors and materials. I used a cotton yarn to make the first one. And although I liked it, something wasn't quite right. The stitches were not as defined as I would have like them to be.

So, I crocheted a second bracelet with hemp cord. The outcome was exactly what I was looking for. The stitches were well defined and crisp. Looking back at my first bracelet crocheted with the cotton yarn, I can see why the stitches are not as defined. The cotton yarn is a bit fuzzy.

So, I made two more bracelets. One in black hemp, and the other in a colorful nylon cord. Of all four bracelets I made, the broomstick stitches were well defined in all of them except the cotton yarn.

It is the type of stitch used in the design of the bracelet that makes the bracelet beautiful. And with fuzzy materials like the cotton yarn, the lacy stitches don't stand out as well as other types of materials. So be sure to take this into consideration when selecting your material to make the Broomstick Lace bracelet.

After starting a channel on YouTube, I decided to include a video tutorial on how to make the Broomstick Lace bracelet. I also posted several pictures of the bracelets on Facebook with a link to the video. The response was more than expected. Some asked me for written pattern instructions. So, after making another bracelet and taking lots of photos, I finally have written instructions in addition to the video.

The instructions in my pattern are for the right-handed crocheter. If you are left handed, Nicola (Cult of Crochet) has very good detailed written instructions with lots of photos.

Pattern Instructions

Although the "Broomstick Lace Crochet" bracelet can be made in different widths as shown in the photo below, pattern instructions will produce the bracelet on the right. To make the narrower bracelet in the photo on the left, crochet 10 chains in step 1, instead of 15 chains. And then adjust the pattern instructions appropriately.

Materials Required:

Size G Crochet Hook for cotton yarn, hemp cord or nylon cord
Large object such as a large crochet hook (size P or Q), or a similar object such as a highlighter (Sharpie)
Yarn

Attach yarn to hook

Step 1: Chain 15

Step 2: Pull the loop on the size G crochet hook to make it large enough to fit on the larger crochet hook as shown below.

Step 3: While one loop is on the large crochet hook, insert the G crochet hook into the next chain space of the [chain 15], pull through a loop and place the loop on the large crochet hook. Repeat until you have 15 loops on the large crochet hook

Step 4: Using the size G crochet hook, lift 5 loops off the large crochet hook

Step 5: Holding the 5 loops together with your fingers, insert the G crochet hook under the top of the 5 loops, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through the one loop on the hook (you just created 1 slip stitch on the top of the 5 loops

Step 6: Insert G crochet hook under the top of the same 5 loops as before, yarn over and pull loop under the 5 loops, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. Repeat 4 times, ending with 1 slip stitch and 5 single crochets across the top of the 5 loops

Step 7: Repeat steps 4, 5 & 6 for the 2nd group of 5 loops on the large hook

Step 8: Repeat steps 4, 5 & 6 for the 3rd (last) group of 5 loops on the large hook

This completes row 1

Step 9: Using the G crochet hook pull the loop on the hook to make it large enough to fit over the large crochet hook and place it on the large crochet hook as previously done in step 2.

Step 10: With the one loop on the large crochet hook, insert the G crochet hook into the next single crochet from the previous round, pull up a loop and place the loop on the large crochet hook. Repeat until you have 15 loops on the large crochet hook as previously done in step 3.

Step 11: Repeat steps 4 – 8 to complete the row.

Step 12: Continue the pattern until your bracelet is the desired length. Then sew 2 or 3 buttons on one end. Make sure the buttons are small enough to fit through the openings on the other end of the bracelet. Or connect the ends with ribbon. I used the same material that the bracelet was made with to sew the buttons on. This makes it difficult to see the stitches

Coming up with an idea for a crochet video tutorial can be challenging with all of the ideas popping

in and out of my head...and out again. It's not easy choosing a project my viewers will be interested

in learning. What about crocheting with something other than a fiber yarn or thread?

What do you think? Not sure? Neither am I. It's a good thing I'm a member of several crochet

groups. So, I already sought out the members of the "Create Crochet Team" and "Crochet & Sewing

Tips, Free Patterns, For Everyone Group" to see what type of materials were tried.

Their response was amazing. Some of the members crocheted with materials I never thought of. I

wasn't sure what plarn was, so I googled it and saw that it was crocheting with plastic, mostly

grocery store bags. I also googled plarn in google images to see images of what was being crocheted

with plarn. Wow! I saw some amazing things.

resembles an afghan made out of small

And the colorful antlers

coordinates beautifully with

the deer's body.

It was created by Magda van der Vloed, a South African artist

who makes her pieces out of plastic bottles and bags.

As for my crochet groups, they also have a lot of talent

and creativity and thanks to their help I now have the info I

need to plan my next crochet video tutorial. For material I've

decided to go with copper wire although plarn (plastic) may be

a future consideration.

So check out the list below and be inspired to try crocheting

with something new and different.

Tubular Bead Crochet Tutorial

Easier Alternative Method For Starting Your Tube (Rope)

During the first few rounds of tubular bead crochet the tube

(rope) loses its shape due to the weight of the beads onto the thin

crochet thread.

In the video tutorial, I demonstrate an alternative way to crochet

the first few rounds of your tube. The method I use physically

supports the shape of your tube. It prevents the tube from losing

it's shape and makes it easier for you to see your stitches more

clearly, thereby making it easier to crochet your tube.

Materials required:

Size 7mm steel crochet hook

Size 10 cotton crochet thread

1/4" cotton clothesline rope (7 inches long) for tubular bead

crochet with 5 beads in each round. The size of the clothesline

rope required depends on the beads size and the number of

beads in each round.

Materials:

Size 7 / 1.65 mm steel crochet hook
Size 6 seed beads in red, yellow and blue
C Lon thread or Size 10 crochet thread

Pattern instructions:

Follow the "List of beads" as depicted in the diagram above to string your beads onto your crochet thread. Begin with row 1 (20 yellow beads) down to the bottom. Then to the top of row 2 (1 yellow bead) and down to the bottom etc.

This design will create a 6" tubular bead crochet tube (rope). After the bead end caps and clasp are attached the bracelet will measure 6 1/2" long (will vary with size of end caps & clasp) You can attach a 1" chain and make the bracelet adjustable up to 7 1/2".

Materials:

Size 7 / 1.65 mm Crochet Hook

Size 10 Crochet Thread

Any size pair of Earring Hoops

Tapestry Needle

Fabric Stiffener (I use Stiffy made by Plaid)

Instructions: Row 1

Attach crochet thread to earring hoop
Single Crochet (sc) 5 stitches onto your earring hoop
From this point on sc stitches onto your earring hoop in (groups of 7) until you have covered your earring hoop with the desired amount of crochet thread

Row 2

Turn
chain (ch) 3
Single Crochet (sc) in 2nd stitch,
(skip 1 st, slip st (sl st) in the next st) 3 times,
sc and ch 3 in the next st,
Repeat steps 4 and 5 to the end of round 2 ending with a slip st in the last stitch
ch 1, turn

Row 3

sc 7 times in the next chain 3 loop
sl st in the next two stitches
Repeat steps 1 & 2 for the entire round ending with 7 sc's in the last ch 3 loop
sl st onto the hoop at the end of round and tie off

Finishing

Using a tapestry needle, weave in thread tails.

As an option to make your earrings permanent, coat both

sides with a fabric stiffener and allow to dry for several hours.

The "Easy Ocean Wave” Earrings

Required Materials:

One ball of Size 10 crochet thread

Size 6 / 1.8 mm crochet hook

Two earring posts

Two earring posts backs

Two small Beads (6mm or 8mm)

Directions:

Instructions below are for crocheting one earring.

Round 1

1. Attach crochet thread on crochet hook and leave a 15 - 20 inch tail.

2. With the main strand of crochet thread and the tail strand of crochet thread held together chain 3.

(Crocheting with the main strand of thread and the tail strand of thread held together creates a more sturdy beginning chain.

3. Slip stitch in the first chain to form a loop.

Drop the tail and continue working with the main working thread only for the rest of the pattern.

Round 2

1. Chain 1.

2. Single crochet in the center and all the way around until you reach the last stitch. I was able to crochet 15 times. How many single crochets you do in the circle depends on how you crochet. People who crochet loosely will make less stitches than someone who crochets tight. Round 2 is very flexible in the number of stitches crocheted into the circle. Make a note of the number of stitches you make in round 2 on the first earring and do the same for the second earring.

3. Join with a slip stitch in the 1st single crochet.

Round 3

1. Chain 3 (Counts as one double crochet).

2. Double crochet two times in the same stitch as the chain 3 (makes 3 Double crochets since the chain 3 counts as a double crochet).

3. Double crochet 3 times in each single crochet around.

4. Complete the round by joining with a slip stitch into the top of the beginning Chain 3.

Round 4

1. Chain 3 (Counts as one double crochet).

2. Double crochet two times in the same stitch as the chain 3 (makes 3 Double crochets).

3. Double crochet in each double crochet around

4. Complete the round by joining with a slip stitch into the top of the beginning Chain 3.

Assemble

1. Pull the thread through the last stitch to tie it off. Cut crochet thread leaving a 15 inch tail.

2. Using a tapestry needle, weave in the loose thread coming from the edge of the earring. Use short stitches so your stitches will be hidden.

3. Using the loose thread coming from the center of the earring, sew the bead onto the center front side of the earring.

4. Weave in the loose thread leftover from sewing the bead on.

5. Apply fabric stiffener to the front of the earring using a paint brush.

6. Attach the earring to Styrofoam or cardboard with a pin in the center of the earring. You can use a paintbrush or pencil to help shape the earrings.

5. Allow to dry for several hours or overnight.

6. Apply fabric stiffener to the back of the earring and allow to dry.

7. Attach an earring post to the back of the center of the earring using a strong glue. I used E6000.

7. Repeat for second earring.
