EMERGENCY: When Congress attacks, wolves die

2015-01-15T08:30:00.000-05:00

Congressional Attack
on Wolves

When the best available science is ignored, wolves die in droves.

Help protect the lives of Wyoming’s wolves with a donation today!

Dear Activelids,

There’s nothing that anti-wolf politicians in Wyoming won’t do to turn the state back into a deadly place for wolves.

Now their representative in the U.S. Congress is proposing legislation to strip Wyoming’s wolves of Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections. If Representative Lummis succeeds, wolves in Wyoming will once again be in grave danger.

If you love wolves as much as I do, please make an emergency donation to Defenders of Wildlife today!

You know what happens when Congress interferes with the ESA and wolves. And it’s not pretty.

In 2011, Congress forced Montana and Idaho’s wolves off the Endangered Species List. Within months, wolves were falling under a hail of bullets. In Idaho alone, the state legislature quickly rammed through a new wolf killing control board with the expressed goal of reducing Idaho’s wolf population by up to 80 percent! The number of breeding pairs in the state has already plummeted by nearly 60 percent.

The ESA law is clear – decisions about imperiled wildlife protection should be based on the best available science, and not local politics. When the best available science is ignored, wolves die in droves.

Under Wyoming’s management, wolves were classified as vermin in more than 80 percent of the state. In their so-called “predator zone,” you could kill as many wolves as you could find, every day of the year.

Won't you stand up for wolves with a generous contribution today?

Defenders of Wildlife is the nation’s leading champion for wolves and other imperiled wildlife. As a Defenders supporter, your voice will be heard – in Washington, D.C. and on the front lines of the fight to restore wolves throughout the west.

January marks the 20^th anniversary of the restoration of wolves to the Northern Rockies. Thanks to supporters like you, we were there. And with your help, this all-important work will go on for decades to come.

Thanks for all you do.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark

A Special Day for Wolves

2015-01-12T09:00:00.000-05:00

A Day to Celebrate

Twenty years ago today, 14 wolves
were released back into
Yellowstone National Park.

Dear Activelids,

Twenty years ago today, wolves returned to Yellowstone.

It was on this date in 1995 that 14 wolves were released into Yellowstone National Park - the culmination of decades of work led by Defenders of Wildlife. Days later, another 15 wolves took their first steps into the Idaho wilderness.

It’s a moment to remember – and celebrate. After nearly being wiped from the map of the Lower 48, wolves once again roamed wild and free in the Northern Rockies.

Today, gray wolves exist in roughly ten states – and one has wandered as far as California. Your support through the years has been critical to our success and we hope you take heart in this conservation triumph.

You and I both know it hasn't been easy since those first historic steps were taken 20 years ago. The same ignorance and hatred that decimated wolves a century ago is still alive and well in some areas. The struggle to secure a future for wolves in the Lower 48 is far from finished.

But today we celebrate. And from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for all you have done for wolves and for America’s vulnerable wildlife everywhere.

With deep appreciation,

Jamie Rappaport Clark
President
Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. Don’t forget to purchase your limited edition 20^th Anniversary Wolf Package commemorating this momentous day for gray wolves in America!

“Best kind of Wolves...DEAD” - From an anti-wolf Facebook page

This is what we’re up against, and we desperately need your help.

Only hours remain to have your tax-deductible year-end gift to Defenders of Wildlife matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $100,000.

Won’t you do it for the wolves?

After 20 years of slow recovery

wolves back to the brink.

tough battles ahead!

Dear Activelids,

As you read this, there’s a good chance a wolf is dying somewhere in Idaho.

After 20 years of slow recovery in the Northern Rockies, Idaho has pulled out all the stops to drive wolves back to the brink.

Idaho is ground zero for wolf hatred - but it’s not the only source of danger.

Help us begin 2015 from a position of strength with a generous year-end contribution to Defenders of Wildlife.

And from now until midnight, your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000!

When the 114th Congress convenes next week, we’re expecting an unprecedented assault on imperiled wildlife, conservation laws and funding.

In fact, this could turn out to be the most anti-wildlife Congress ever.

As you may know, next month also marks an amazing milestone for wolves. It’s the 20th anniversary of the first wolf reintroduction to the Northern Rockies. Until January 1995, the western Lower 48 was almost a wolfless world. Thanks to supporters like you, Defenders helped change that.

Please donate today and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $100,000!

You and I have come too far to see the gains of the last two decades wiped out by greed, ignorance and hatred. We’ve seen what a wolfless Lower 48 looks like - we have already lived in a nation where wolves were pushed to the brink of extinction - and we’re not going back!

This is a defining moment for wolves and the imperiled wildlife you love. We need you more than ever.

Won't you make your generous year-end gift now?

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark
President

BREAKING: Grand Canyon wolf shot and killed?

2014-12-30T16:06:00.000-05:00

A Tragic Loss

A collared three-year-old female wolf was shot and killed Sunday in Utah.

	$30 becomes $60
	$50 becomes $100
	$100 becomes $200
	$250 becomes $500

Please make your matching
gift year-end-donation today – in the name of this fallen wolf!

Dear Activelids,

I can’t imagine a more heartbreaking end to one of the most inspiring stories of the year.

A collared three-year-old female wolf was shot and killed Sunday in Utah.

Tragically, we suspect that it’s the wandering wolf that captured our imaginations by showing up on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon – the wolf that some in the Southwest called, Echo.

If DNA tests prove that the fallen wolf is indeed this wolf, it is simply too sad for words.

In the name of this fallen wolf, won’t you make a generous year-end donation to Defenders of Wildlife?

And your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000 until midnight tomorrow, December 31^st.

The wolf was killed only 150 miles from the Grand Canyon. Whether this is the Grand Canyon wolf or not, it’s a tragic preview of the killing to come if the federal government finalizes its proposal to delist gray wolves throughout most of the Lower 48.

No one fights for the wolves you love harder than Defenders. For decades, we’ve led the way for the return of wolves to the Lower 48. We are your eyes and ears in wolf country. We are your voice in the halls of Congress.

Please support our critical work to save wolves and other imperiled wildlife!

The wolf observed in the Grand Canyon last month, traveled hundreds of miles from her Northern Rockies home in search of new habitat and a mate. That’s what healthy wolves do. She reminded us all of the resilience of these magnificent animals. But her possible demise also reminds us that wolves need continued protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Your generous support will never matter more than it does at this sad time.

Thank you for your passion and your commitment.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark
President

BREAKING: A new wave of killing (your gift MATCHED)

2014-12-30T09:00:00.000-05:00

Wolf Killing Contest
in Montana

Killing wolves in a competitive
derby for prizes is not a game.

Your wolf-saving gift matched dollar-for-dollar until 12/31!

Dear Activelids,

We have just learned of plans for yet another wolf-killing contest, this time in Montana.

Contests like these are simply despicable, and must be stopped from spreading.

Please make an emergency donation to Defenders of Wildlife to help end the war against wolves.

Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $100,000, until midnight on December 31st!

The so-called “1st Annual Great Montana Coyote and Wolf Hunt,” is scheduled to take place January 16th to 18th in Sanders County, Montana. Hunters can shoot or trap animals for fun and prizes.

Killing wolves and other predators in a competitive derby for prizes is not a sport. In fact, the California Fish and Game Commission just banned these kinds of commercial derbies. The California commission concluded that "awarding prizes for wildlife killing contests is both unethical and inconsistent with our modern understanding of natural systems."

I fear we’re on the threshold of a new and dark turn in the war against wolf. Derbies are now scheduled in Idaho and Montana. There’s growing anti-wolf fervor in Washington state as well. And we’re days away from the opening of what could be the most anti-wildlife U.S. Congress in history!

Your support for Defenders is the best step you can take to protect wolves and other wildlife you love.

And remember – Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $100,000, until midnight on December 31st!

Defenders led the way toward reintroduction of wolves in the Lower 48. And we’ve fought for the wolves every day since. With your help, we’ll see the great work of returning wolves to their suitable historic habitats through to a successful conclusion!

You will never make a bigger difference than you can today!

Thanks so much for your passion and your support.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark
President
Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. With our match in effect, your wolf-saving donation will go twice as far – please donate today!

The killing is out of control –
with the match, your gift will
go twice as far!

Dear Activelids,

These are especially dangerous times for wolves in Idaho.

It’s winter days like these when wolves are at greatest risk from bullets and traps, especially those from federal and state agents. Now that food is scarce, wolves will be out foraging – and they’re much easier to track in the snow. So far, hunters and trappers have killed 129 wolves since hunting season began.

Won't you support our year-end campaign with a generous donation for the wolves and other vulnerable wildlife we love?

Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000 until midnight on December 31st!

As you read this, there’s a good chance a wolf is dying somewhere in Idaho. And if the current trend continues, some of them are likely to be an alpha male or female which are critical to the future of their packs and wolf recovery.

More and more alpha female wolves are being killed. Only the alpha female of a pack breeds, so when she’s killed, the pack is thrown into chaos – and when spring denning season arrives, no pups are born.

The steady loss of mother wolves in Idaho has reached crisis proportions.

But there is hope.

We can turn this around. Many Idahoans do not share anti-wolf politicians’ desire to dramatically reduce wolf populations. Like you, they understand that wolves restore balance to ecosystems. And they recognize that wolves are important to maintaining healthy ecosystems. Their voices need to be heard.

Help us protect our nation’s wolf heritage by supporting our emergency matching gift year-end campaign!

Thanks to supporters like you, Defenders of Wildlife has been at the forefront of efforts to restore wolves to the Lower 48. We were present at the first reintroductions 20 years ago. We’ve repeatedly gone to court to make sure wolves get the legal protection they deserve. And we’re working around the clock, on the ground in Idaho, in Washington, DC, and elsewhere to bring an end to the Idaho war on wolves.

Your support helps ensure we have the resources to carry on this fight. We are the voice of America’s wolves, and we’re your voice, too.

Your help will never make a bigger difference.

Blood trails in the snow

2014-12-28T10:30:00.000-05:00

Activelids-

Every day the slaughter gets worse. Every day more wolves fall.

We've got to turn it around in 2015.

You can make a difference - with your generous tax-deductible year-end donation today.

-Jamie

Winter's Bloody Secret

In winter, even if you just wound
a wolf, you can easily follow the
bloody trail in the snow.

If the national delisting goes through, more wolves will die – they need you now more than ever.

Dear Activelids,

With a blanket of white snow on the ground, everyone knows – even if you just wound a wolf, you can easily follow the bloody trail in the snow.

And in winter, when food is scarce and tracks in the snow make it much easier to put a bullseye on their backs, wolves are the most vulnerable to those who want them dead.

Your urgent donation to Defenders of Wildlife is the best investment you can make for wolves and other vulnerable wildlife.

4,259 wolves have been killed in the Lower 48 since 2011. And when it comes to killing wolves, snow is an unlikely ally for those who want to kill them.

For America’s wolves, every day is a life or death struggle for survival. Defenders of Wildlife has been at the forefront of restoring wolves to the Lower 48 for decades. But we are only as strong as our supporters.

We count on wildlife lovers like you to help us fight for the wolves, on the ground in wolf country and in Washington, DC.

Your support will never make a bigger difference than it will today.

The facts are clear. If the U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s proposed national delisting goes through, more wolves will die.

You and I have worked so hard to restore wolves to the Lower 48. We can’t let the wolf haters in places like Idaho resume the slaughter that wiped wolves out in the first place.

Wolves need you now, more than ever.

Thank you for your passion and your generosity.

Sincerely,

Help us stop the out of control
wolf slaughter in Idaho.

Dear Activelids,

We’re only weeks away from a bloody commercial wolf-killing contest in Idaho.

While it will no longer take place on three million acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, the so-called “Predator Hunting Contest and Fur Rendezvous” will take place on other federal lands in January 2015. Prizes will be awarded for the most wolves, coyotes and other predators killed.

This is wrong in so many ways; it’s hard to know where to start.

Wolf slaughter is about to get out of control in Idaho. Please make an emergency donation to Defenders of Wildlife to help end the war against wolves.

Here are just some of the reasons why this derby is simply despicable:

It’s still on federal land. While the BLM has withdrawn permission for the derby to take place on three million acres of their land, the killfest is still set to take place on National Forest lands in Idaho.
It turns killing wolves and other predators into a competitive and commercial sport. In California, the State Fish and Game Commission just banned these kinds of commercial derbies. The California Commission concluded that "awarding prizes for wildlife killing contests is both unethical and inconsistent with our modern understanding of natural systems."
There’s a predator-killing youth division! The proposed Idaho derby offers special prizes for hunters as young as 10 years old!
It pushes Idaho’s beleaguered wolves closer to the edge. After years of slaughter, only 20 breeding pairs of wolves were estimated to have survived in Idaho at the end of last year.

Your support for Defenders is the best step you can take to protect wolves and other wildlife you love.

Those Idaho hunters who proposed this derby are outright wrong – America’s wolves belong to all of us. And to enlist children in the wholesale killing is beyond the pale.

Defenders led the way toward reintroduction of wolves in the Lower 48. And we’ve fought for the wolves every day since. With your help, we’ll see the great work of returning wolves to their suitable historic habitats through to a successful conclusion!

The lower 48 states without wolves? We’ve seen what that looks like. And we’re not going back!

We can’t do this without you.

Thanks for your passion and your support.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark

An unlikely ally for wolf killers

2014-12-26T08:00:00.000-05:00

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark

VIDEO: Wildlife wins you made happen

2014-12-22T09:00:00.000-05:00

Dear Activelids,

You are the reason why, even on the most difficult of days, I’m optimistic about the future. Your tireless support is a big reason why we’ve made significant progress for wildlife in 2014.

As we continue to be unrelenting in our fight for the future of gray wolves, it’s important to remember that there are a number of accomplishments worth celebrating.

Watch our short video – it’s dedicated to you and others who share our love for imperiled wildlife.

Among the great wildlife moments of 2014, a few stand out:

We won a huge court victory in Wyoming, where wolves are once again protected by the Endangered Species Act;
The state of California extended endangered species protection to gray wolves under the state Endangered Species Act, as our favorite wandering wolf, OR-7, fathered a litter of pups in Oregon not far from the California state line;
We funded deployment of washing and holding units for polar bears injured or sick from oil spills on Alaska’s North Slope - the first of its kind; and
Defenders’ members rose up and successfully pressured Animal Planet to pull a faux documentary that demonized wolves.

Celebrate some of the high points of 2014 with us by watching our short video.

But as we prepare to enter 2015 and face what looks to become the most anti-wildlife Congress in history, we can’t help but worry for our nation’s wolves and other imperiled wildlife.

As we face these daunting challenges, we are so proud to be the voice for imperiled wildlife that has no voice of its own. And we are proud to be your voice, too!

Wishing you a warm and joyous holiday season.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark

Wolf hate is deadly: Help stop it

2014-12-18T07:00:00.000-05:00

“I would like to see every wolf shot and killed this year that's left in Montana get
them gone.” – From an anti-wolf social media page

Hate is Contagious.
And Deadly.

There are fewer than 55 known wolves in the entire state of Washington.

Help us fight for wolves in 2015
with a generous year-end gift!

Dear Activelids,

Hate is contagious. And deadly. And wolves are dying because of it.

In Idaho, the vendetta against wolves ruthlessly continues. Now, it’s spreading to Washington state where just last month, the alpha female of the Teanaway pack was illegally shot and killed, throwing the pack’s future into jeopardy.

Please donate today - your support will help give us the resources we need to protect wolves where and when they need it most.

There are fewer than 55 known wolves in the entire state of Washington, making the suspected intentional killing of the alpha female even more tragic.

Meanwhile, radical anti-wolf groups in the region are trying to work up a frenzy of fear and hatred by putting up billboard ads featuring anti-wolf propaganda and lies. This kind of damaging misinformation can catch the public’s attention like wildfire – and we can’t let that happen.

Help us fight the lies and get the truth out about wolves with a generous year-end donation to Defenders of Wildlife.

We’re working hard to prevent fear and hatred from spreading across the West. And we’re stepping up our efforts in battleground states like Idaho, where extreme anti-wolf politicians have caused the deaths of more than 1,400 wolves since 2009 and made a mockery of wolf conservation.

We have already lived in a nation where wolves were pushed to the brink of extinction. And we’re not going to let it happen again!

We can’t tell you how grateful we are for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark

RE: Anti-wolf group running hateful ads: Help fight back

2014-12-15T07:00:00.000-05:00

Activelids-

Billboards with hateful anti-wolf propaganda are popping up in Washington state.

Don’t let fairytales based on superstition and lies set back the recovery of such an amazing creature.

Help us spread the truth.

Help Stop the Lies

These billboard ads are popping up in Washington state, fueling
anti-wolf fears and propaganda.

Help us reach our goal of
$50,000 to place ads to stop the
spread of anti-wolf lies!

Dear Activelids,

Washington state has become the newest battleground in the war against wolves.

An anti-wolf group has begun running huge billboards filled with anti-wolf lies and propaganda intended to incite fear. They would have people in Washington believe that young children will be next on a wolf’s “menu.”

These lies must not go unanswered.

That’s why Defenders is planning an all-out ad blitz to stop the damaging spread of lies and misinformation.

We need to raise at least $50,000 to run this aggressive campaign - won’t you chip in to help us run billboard and online ads that tell the truth about wolves?

We’re hoping to raise enough to run eight billboard ads across Washington state as well as an aggressive online ad campaign to expose the lies that anti-wolf forces are spreading. We’re confident that when people have the facts, they’ll continue to support wolf recovery in the state. The more we can raise, the longer we can keep these ads running!

As of the last official count, there are only 52 wolves in all of Washington state – and they are being illegally killed as the hate-based claims become more and more farfetched.

It’s a familiar tactic. Fuel old fears and prejudices to turn public opinion against wolves. Then, press for state wildlife rules that permit “kill first, ask questions later” tactics against these magnificent animals.

That’s what they did in Idaho – and they can do it here too if we don’t nip this in the bud!

Here’s the truth about wolves: They have more reason to be afraid of humans than we do of them. You are more likely to be attacked by your neighbor’s poodle than to be attacked by a wolf.

Help us spread the truth! Donate now to help us run counter ads in Washington state and to help protect wolves and other wildlife.

We have already lived in a nation where wolves had been pushed to the brink of extinction – we’re not going to let it happen again. We can’t let fairy tales based on superstition and lies set back the recovery of such an important native species.

We can’t tell you how grateful we are for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark

A world without wolves?

2014-12-04T07:00:00.000-05:00

“How lonely is the night without the howl of a wolf.” – Unknown

Emergency Wolf Protection

The war against wolves has been
renewed with shocking ferocity.

Please support our Emergency
Protection Fund to help us
win the war for wolves!

Dear Activelids,

You and I have seen what a world without wolves looks like. We inherited a nation where wolves had been pushed to the brink of extinction.

By the 1930s, a century of constant persecution and slaughter had all but erased wolves from our nation’s wildlands. But on January 12, 1995 that all began to change. On that day, gray wolves set foot in Yellowstone National Park for the first time since their extermination in the park decades earlier.

The reintroduction of gray wolves is one of the greatest conservation successes of our time. But tragically, vocal anti-wolf extremists and politicians are turning back the clock on this landmark achievement.

Today, once again, states are working to kill hundreds of wolves.

Please support the Defenders of Wildlife Emergency Protection Fund for Wolves. Your donation will help us win the war for wolves and protect other vulnerable wildlife.

The extermination of wolves in the 19th and early 20th centuries was based on fear and ignorance. Back then, most people didn't understand the importance of wolves and other predators to the health of the ecosystems they inhabited. And many believed the old wives’ tales about wolves being malicious, bloodthirsty monsters.

Today, of course, we know better. But old fears and prejudices die hard. And the war against wolves has been renewed with shocking ferocity.

Anti-wolf forces are working to bring wolf recovery to a screeching and tragic halt.

In just the past three years, more than 1,100 wolves have been killed in Idaho alone. They've been gunned down, snared by the neck, trapped and shot from helicopters.

And to make matters worse, the most anti-wildlife Congress in decades will convene in January. The anti-wolf extremists are likely to have unprecedented support in our nation’s capital.

With your help, Defenders speaks for the wolves, both in Washington, DC and on the frontlines of the war against wolves. Thanks to supporters like you, we were there on that cold January day almost 20 years ago. And with your continued help, we will look forward to even greater successes ahead.

If you love wolves, there’s never been a more important moment to come to their defense.

Please support the Defenders of Wildlife Emergency Protection Fund for Wolves. Your donation will help us win the war for wolves and protect other vulnerable wildlife.

A world without wolves? We’ve seen what that looks like. And we we’re not going to let it happen again!

Thank you for all you do.

For the wolves,

Jamie Rappaport Clark

Dear Activelids,

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today we think about all the things we’re grateful for. Here at Defenders, we’re most thankful for the continued support of people like you.

When the going gets rough, we take heart knowing that behind us are hundreds of thousands of passionate wildlife lovers.

And while this has been a tough year for Idaho wolves, Florida panthers and other wildlife, there have also been victories worth celebrating:

Wyoming wolves win in court. In September, we won our federal lawsuit to restore Endangered Species Act protection for Wyoming’s beleaguered wolf population.
A big win for endangered red wolves. In November, we made huge progress in protecting the world’s only wild population of 100 red wolves, when a court approved a settlement agreement banning night hunting of coyotes– a leading cause of death for red wolves.
Bison make gains on the range. Earlier this month, we helped reintroduce 136 genetically pure Yellowstone bison to Montana’s Fort Peck Indian Reservation, more than tripling the tribes’ herd that we first helped establish in 2012. These bison will play a key role in the historic return of these iconic animals to the American West.
A marine monument for the record books. President Obama expanded the Remote Island Marine National Monument by 490,000 square miles – ten times its original size. That means close to half a million square miles of safe haven for seabirds, marine mammals, sea turtles and other ocean wildlife.

You had a hand in each one of these and many other victories this past year. Without your support, we could not have been there.

Never forget – where there is passion and determination, anything is possible. Thank you for being a valued partner in this important work.

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark

A big step in the right direction!

2014-11-26T09:21:00.000-05:00

Derby Canceled on
BLM Land

On BLM lands, wolves and other predators can breathe easier today!

Dear Activelids,

Finally some good news from Idaho!

We just received word that the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has withdrawn its permit allowing a “Predator Derby” to take place on BLM lands in Idaho. This was the appalling commercial derby that Defenders of Wildlife went to Federal court last week to block.

This is an important victory for wolves and other predators – and it’s one you helped achieve. The reversal came after Defenders went to court and tens of thousands of you expressed outrage over the decision to let the predator killfest go forward on BLM lands. Fortunately, senior officials at the Department of the Interior heard your voice and directed that the commercial derby permit be withdrawn.

Introduced by a “hunters’ rights organization,” the derby’s goal was to make a competitive, commercialized sport of killing wolves and other predators. This was a throwback to 19th century thinking when wolves were seen as vermin worthy only of extermination.

The BLM’s reversal is an important victory as we work around the clock to end the slaughter in Idaho. Sadly, it’s still possible that the derby could take place on federal lands elsewhere in Idaho. But we can take heart in the fact that, at least on BLM lands, wolves and other predators can breathe easier today. And we can remind ourselves that larger victories are not only possible, but inevitable, when wildlife defenders like you make your voices heard.

Thank you again. You’re making a difference, and we are so grateful!

Sincerely,

Jamie Rappaport Clark
