How to Set Up a Virtualization Server

If there's one technology that can greatly improve computing environments of any size, it's virtualization. By using a single physical server to run many virtual servers, you can decrease operational costs and get far more bang for your buck. Whether your company is a 2-server or 2000-server shop, you can benefit from server virtualization in a variety of ways. The best part? You can do it cheaply and easily.

The reasons to virtualize even a small infrastructure come down to ease of administration and cost reductions. Cost reductions come from cutting down the number of physical servers, thus reducing the power and cooling requirements, but they also come in the form of greatly reduced expansion. Rather than having to purchase new hardware to support a new business application, all you need to do is add a new virtual server.

If your business has only a single server, virtualization isn't likely to buy you much, but if you have more than two servers or if you plan on expanding anytime soon, virtualization can likely make a difference.

It's impossible to purchase a server today that isn't multicore, but many small-business server requirements simply don't call for that much horsepower. The end result is a relatively expensive server that does very little but still consumes power and generates heat. That's why using a multicore server--that is, a server that has 4, 6, or 12 processing cores on a single CPU--to host several virtual servers makes sense, no matter what size your company is.

The Host Server

The key to successfully virtualizing servers in a smaller environment starts with the physical host server, the box that will run multiple virtual servers. Even though this one server will be responsible for hosting possibly dozens of virtual servers, it will require far fewer CPU resources than you might assume.

Depending on the virtualization software in use--VMware, Microsoft's Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, or another package--you will likely be able to run a surprising number of virtual servers on a four- or six-core CPU. The reason is that generally most servers run near idle a significant portion of the time. When they are tasked with work, their resources tend to be spread out among the RAM, CPU, disk, and network input/output, with only a subset of the virtual servers actually requiring significant CPU resources. By taking advantage of this law of averages, you can consolidate a considerable number of physical servers onto a single host server.

That isn't a hard and fast rule, however. Some servers, such as database servers, run heavier loads on a more consistent basis, and may not be suitable candidates for virtualization in a smaller infrastructure. It all depends on the hardware resources available to the host server, on the virtualization software features, and on the requirements of the virtual server. Fortunately, setting up and testing these requirements beforehand isn't difficult.

The first order of business when approaching a small virtualization project is to choose the hardware. Generally you'll start out with only a single server, so try to get the best mix of resources possible within budget.

A good rule of thumb is that having more cores in the host server trumps higher clock speeds, so if you have a choice between a 4-core CPU running at 2.93GHz and a 6- or 12-core CPU running at 2.4GHz, you'll be better off with the latter option. That's because the capability to spread the virtual-server load across more CPU cores typically translates into faster, more consistent performance across all the virtual machines. Think of it as needing a dump truck (which isn't that fast) instead of a sports car (which is faster but can haul far less than the dump trunk can).

RAM and Storage

Once you make the CPU decision, the next area to consider is RAM. Virtualization host machines can always use more RAM, so get as much as you can, and select the fastest RAM possible. It's relatively straightforward to oversubscribe CPU resources--or allocate more virtual CPUs to the virtual servers than physically exist within the host server--but it's far more difficult to oversubscribe RAM. The more RAM you have available, the more virtual machines you'll be able to run.

That's especially true if you're running certain hypervisors (which are responsible for managing all virtual servers) that do not offer shared memory features. Some require that a fixed amount of RAM be presented to each virtual server, and that the RAM is allocated in its entirety. Other, more advanced setups can determine when identical memory segments are present in multiple virtual servers and map that memory accordingly, allowing more RAM to be allocated to the virtual servers than exists within the host. Either way, always go for more RAM when possible.

The third factor to consider is storage. In smaller environments you may not have astorage area network (SAN) or a network attached storage (NAS) device to hold the virtual server images, so the host server will be responsible for the task. In that case, more disks are better, within reason. For general purposes, SATA drives in a RAID 5 or RAID 6 array will suffice, although SAS drives will always provide increased performance. If at all possible, ensure that the physical server has a RAID controller that supports RAID 5 or RAID 6, and plan your storage accordingly.

Understanding BGP Routing

The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the routing protocol of the Internet, used to route traffic across the Internet. For that reason, it's a pretty important protocol, and it can also be the hardest one to understand.

From our overview of Internet routing, you should realize that routing in the Internet is comprised of two parts: the internal fine-grained portions managed by an IGP such as OSPF, and the interconnections of those autonomous systems (AS) via BGP.

Who needs to understand BGP?

BGP is relevant to network administrators of large organizations which connect to two or more ISPs, as well as to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who connect to other network providers. If you are the administrator of a small corporate network, or an end user, then you probably don't need to know about BGP.

BGP basics

The current version of BGP is BGP version 4, based on RFC4271.
BGP is the path-vector protocol that provides routing information for autonomous systems on the Internet via its AS-Path attribute.
BGP is a Layer 4 protocol that sits on top of TCP. It is much simpler than OSPF, because it doesn’t have to worry about the things TCP will handle.
Peers that have been manually configured to exchange routing information will form a TCP connection and begin speaking BGP. There is no discovery in BGP.
Medium-sized businesses usually get into BGP for the purpose of true multi-homing for their entire network.
An important aspect of BGP is that the AS-Path itself is an anti-loop mechanism. Routers will not import any routes that contain themselves in the AS-Path.

Why do you need to understand BGP?

When BGP is configured incorrectly, it can cause massive availability and security problems, as Google discovered in 2008 when its YouTube service became unreachable to large portions of the Internet. What happened was that, in an effort to ban YouTube in its home country, Pakistan Telecom used BGP to route YouTube's address block into a black hole. But, in what is believed to have been an accident, this routing information somehow got transmitted to Pakistan Telecom's Hong Kong ISP and from there got propagated to the rest of the world. The end result was that most of YouTube's traffic ended up in a black hole in Pakistan.

More sinisterly, 2003 saw a number of BGP hijack attacks, where modified BGP route information allowed unknown attackers to redirect large blocks of traffic so that it travelled via routers in Belarus or Iceland before it was transmitted on to its intended destination.

Clearly, BGP is significant. Here we'll provide a short overview of how BGP works, along with the problems it solves and causes.

Autonomous systems

First a little terminology. In the world of BGP, each routing domain is known as an autonomous system, or AS. What BGP does is help choose a path through the Internet, usually by selecting a route that traverses the least number of autonomous systems: the shortest AS path.

You might need BGP, for example, if your corporate network is connected to two large ISPs. To use BGP you would need an AS number, which you can get from the American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN).

Once BGP is enabled, your router will pull a list of Internet routes from your BGP neighbors, who in this case will be your two ISPS. It will then scrutinize them to find the routes with the shortest AS paths. These will be put into the router's routing table. (If you only connect to a single ISP then you don't need BGP. That's because there's only one path to the Internet, so there's no need for a routing protocol to select the best path.)

Generally, but not always, routers will choose the shortest path to an AS. BGP only knows about these paths based on updates it receives.

Route updates

Unlike Routing Information Protocol (RIP), a distance-vector routing protocol which employs the hop count as a routing metric, BGP does not broadcast its entire routing table. At boot, your peer will hand over its entire table. After that, everything relies on updates received.

Route updates are stored in a Routing Information Base (RIB). A routing table will only store one route per destination, but the RIB usually contains multiple paths to a destination. It is up to the router to decide which routes will make it into the routing table, and therefore which paths will actually be used. In the event that a route is withdrawn, another route to the same place can be taken from the RIB.

The RIB is only used to keep track of routes that could possibly be used. If a route withdrawal is received and it only existed in the RIB, it is silently deleted from the RIB. No update is sent to peers. RIB entries never time out. They continue to exist until it is assumed that the route is no longer valid.

BGP path attributes

In many cases, there will be multiple routes to the same destination. BGP therefore uses path attributes to decide how to route traffic to specific networks.

The easiest of these to understand is Shortest AS_Path. What this means is the path which traverses the least number of AS "wins."

Another important attribute is Multi_Exit_Disc (Multi-exit discriminator, or MED). This makes it possible to tell a remote AS that if there are multiple exit points on to your network, a specific exit point is preferred.

The Origin attribute specifies the origin of a routing update. If BGP has multiple routes, then origin is one of the factors in determining the preferred route.

BGP issues

To get a true sense of how BGP works, it's important to spend some time talking about the issues that plague the Internet.

First, we have a very big problem with routing table growth. If someone decides to deaggregate a network that used to be a single /16 network, they could potentially start advertising hundreds of new routes. Every router on the Internet will get every new route when this happens. People are constantly pressured to aggregate, or combine multiple routes into a single advertisement. Aggregation isn't always possible, especially if you want to break up a /19 into two geographically separate /20s. Routing tables are approaching 200,000 routes now, and for a time they were appearing to grow exponentially.

Second, there is always a concern that someone will "advertise the Internet." If some large ISP's customer suddenly decides to advertise everything, and the ISP accepts the routes, all of the Internet's traffic will be sent to the small customer's AS. There's a simple solution to this. It's called route filtering. It's quite simple to set up filters so that your routers won't accept routes from customers that you aren't expecting, but many large ISPs will still accept the equivalent of "default" from peers that have no likelihood of being able to provide transit.

Finally, we come to flapping. BGP has a mechanism to "hold down" routes that appear to be flaky. Routes that flap, or come and go, usually aren't reliable enough to send traffic to. If routes flap frequently, the load on all Internet routes will increase due to the processing of updates every time someone disappears and reappears. Dampening will prevent BGP peers from listening to all routing updates from flapping peers. The amount of time one is in hold-down increases exponentially with every flap. It's annoying when you have a faulty link, since it can be more than an hour before you can get to many Internet sites, but it is very necessary.

This quick discussion of BGP should be enough to get you thinking the right way about the protocol but is by no means comprehensive. Spend some time reading the RFCs if you're tasked with operating a BGP router. Your peers will appreciate it.

Statistics made available in the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report, Volume 6, issued in April 2009, indicate that 91.3% attacks against Office documents involve exploits for a single vulnerability, which users could have already patched via a security update offered over two years ago. OffVis can, in this regard, be used by professionals to further boost user protection against attacks involving Office binary files. Microsoft explained that the tool is capable of graphically illustrating key data structures and records for Office Word, Office PowerPoint and Office Excel, streamlining access, as the records can be navigated easily. In fact, just by hovering the mouse over an Office document sample the Microsoft Office Visualization Tool will deliver a deep view of that specific binary file format.

While the Microsoft Office Visualization Tool has been made available for download today, July 27, 2007, a date that coincides with the Microsoft at Black Hat USA 2009 event, the software giant has already allowed members of the Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) program to test it. The tool streamlines the visualization and understating of vulnerabilities associated with the Office binary file format and will simplify the process of writing detection signatures for security solutions.

“This was first an internal tool used to help triage file format-related security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office,” the Redmond company noted. “Microsoft then offered OffVis to participants of MAPP to test. Security researchers and IT administrators now also will be able to use it to further understand file formats and identify relevant areas where they can invest their efforts. The tool is able to parse the complete file format and also directly identify recent publicly exploited vulnerabilities using the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures list.”

Microsoft explained that OffVis was born out of the need to help offer better protection to end users, by ensuring that customers and partners could put the structure of file formats, as well as the associated vulnerabilities and exploits “under the microscope.” The end purpose is to enable the ecosystem of security product providers to not only build more efficient signatures, but also to catalyze the evolution of malicious code analysis and better the detection of exploits.

Long-term loans can be repaid in a series of annual, semi-annual or monthly payments.
Payments can be equal total payments, equal principal payments or equal payments with a balloon payment.
The Farmer's Home Administration usually requires equal total payments for intermediate and long-term loans.
Use an amortization table to determine the annual payment when the amount of money borrowed, the interest rate and the length of the loan are known.

Money borrowed for long-term capital investments usually is repaid in a series of annual, semi-annual or monthly payments. There are several ways to calculate the amount of these payments:

equal total payments per time period (amortization);
equal principal payments per time period; or
equal payments over a specified time period with a balloon payment due at the end to repay the balance.

When the equal total payment method is used, each payment includes the accrued interest on the unpaid balance, plus some principal. The amount applied toward the principal increases with each payment (Table 1).
The equal principal payment plan also provides for payment of accrued interest on the unpaid balance, plus an equal amount of the principal. The total payment declines over time. As the remaining principal balance declines, the amount of interest accrued also declines (Table 2).
These two plans are the most common methods used to compute loan payments on long-term investments. Lenders also may use a balloon system. The balloon method often is used to reduce the size of periodic payments and to shorten the total time over which the loan is repaid. To do this, a portion of the principal will not be amortized (paid off in a series of payments) but will be due in a lump sum at the end of the loan period. For many borrowers, this means the amount to be repaid in the lump sum must be refinanced, which may be difficult.

Repayment Principles

To calculate the payment amount, all terms of the loan must be known: interest rate, timing of payments (e.g., monthly, quarterly, annually), length of loan and amount of loan. Borrowers should understand how loans are amortized, how to calculate payments and remaining balances as of a particular date, and how to calculate the principal and interest portions of the next payment. This information is valuable for planning purposes before an investment is made, for tax management and planning purposes before the loan statement is received, and for preparation of financial statements.
With calculators or computers, the calculations can be done easily and quickly. The use of printed tables is still common, but they are less flexible because of the limited number of interest rates and time periods for which the tables have been calculated.
Regardless of whether the tables or a calculator is used, work through an example to help apply the concepts and formulas to a specific case.

Lenders Use Different Methods

Different lenders use different methods to calculate loan repayment schedules depending on their needs, borrowers' needs, the institution's interest rate policy (fixed or variable), the length of the loan, and the purpose of the borrowed money. Typically, home mortgage loans, automobile and truck loans, and Consumer installment loans are amortized using the equal total payment method.
The Farm Service Agency equires equal total payments for intermediate and long-term loans.
The Federal Credit Services (FCS) uses the equal total payment method for many loans. Under certain conditions the FCS may require that more principal be repaid earlier in the life of the loan, so they will use the equal principal payment method. For example, in marginal farming areas or for ranches with a high percentage of grazing land in non-deeded permits, FCS may require equal principal payments.
Production Credit Associations (PCA) usually schedule equal principal payment loans for intermediate term purposes. Operating notes are calculated slightly differently. Other commercial lenders use both methods.
Lenders often try to accommodate the needs of their borrowers and let the borrower choose which loan payment method to use. A comparison of Tables 1 and 2 indicates advantages and disadvantages of each plan. The equal principal payment plan incurs less total interest over the life of the loan because the principal is repaid more rapidly. However, it requires higher annual payments in the earlier years when money to repay the loan is typically scarce. Furthermore, because the principal is repaid more rapidly, interest deductions for tax purposes are slightly lower. Principal payments are not tax deductible, and the choice of repayment plans has no effect on depreciation.
The reason for the difference in amounts of interest due in any time period is simple: Interest is calculated and paid on the amount of money that has been loaned but not repaid. In other words, interest is almost always calculated as a percentage of the unpaid or remaining balance: I = i x R
Where:
I = interest payment
i = interest rate
R = unpaid balance.

Amortization Tables

An amortization table can determine the annual payment when the amount of money borrowed, the interest rate and the length of the loan are known. For example, an 8-year loan of $10,000 made at an annual rate of 12 percent would require a $2,013 payment each year.
Refer to Table 3 under the 12 percent column. Read across from 8 years to find the factor 0.20130. This indicates that, for each dollar borrowed, the repayment for interest and principal to retire the loan in 8 years will require 0.20130 cents per year. Thus, the annual loan payment is $10,000 X 0.2013 = $2,013. Use Table 3 to determine the annual payments for loans with the interest rates from 3 to 12 percent financed for the period shown in column one.

Using the Formulas

Because of the infinite number of interest rate and time period combinations, it is easier to calculate payments with a calculator or computer than a table. This is especially true when fractional interest rates are charged and when the length of the loan is not standard. Variable interest rates and rates carried to two or three decimal places also make the use of printed tables difficult.

Equal Total Payments

For equal total payment loans, calculate the total amount of the periodic payment using the following formula:
B = (i x A) / [1 - (1 + i)^-N]
where:
A = amount of loan,
B = periodic total payment, and
N = total number of periods in the loan.
The principal portion due in period n is: C_n = B x (1 + i)^{-(1 + N - n)}
where:
C = principal portion due and
n = period under consideration.
The interest due in period n is: I_n = B - C_n.
The remaining principal balance due after period n is: R_n = (I_n / i) - C_n.

Equal Principal Payments

For equal principal payment loans, the principal portion of the total payment is calculated as: C = A / N.
The interest due in period n is: I_n = [A - C_(n-1)] x i.
The remaining principal balance due after period n is: R_n = (I_n / i) - C.

Calculating Payments with Variable Interest Rates

Many lenders (especially the Farm Credit System) now use variable interest rates, which greatly complicates calculating the payment. The most common way to amortize a loan under a variable interest rate is to calculate the amount of principal due, based on the interest rate in effect on the payment due date. The interest payment is then calculated in the normal fashion.
To illustrate, assume the same loan terms used in Tables 1 and 2: a $10,000 loan at 12 percent interest and an 8-year repayment schedule using the equal total payment method. Assume the interest rate is variable; it remains at 12 percent for the first six months of the year and then changes to 13 percent for the last six months. Instead of calculating the principal due at the end of the first year on the basis of 12 percent, it is calculated using 13 percent. Apply the formulas of the previous section to get: C₁ = i x A / [1 - (1 + i)^-N] x (1 + i)^{-(1 + N - n)} = $783.87 using i = 0.13. Consequently, the principal payment is $783.87 instead of $813.03. The interest payment is calculated at 12 percent for six months and at 13 percent for six months: I₁ = [$10,000 x 0.12 x (6 / 12)] + [$10,000 x 0.13 x (6 / 12)] = $1,250
Thus the total payment for the first year is: B₁ = $783.87 + $1,250 = $2,033.87
and R₁ = $10,000 - $783.87 = $9,216.13
To carry this example one step further, assume the interest rate in the second year of the note remains at 13 percent for two months and then moves to 14 percent and stays there for 10 months. The same formula is used, but now C is calculated using i = 0.14 and n = 2. Thus, C₂ = $861.50 and interest is: I₂ = [$9,162.13 x 0.13 x (2 / 12)] + [$9,216.13 x 0.14 x (10 / 12)] = $199.68 + $1,075.22 = $1,274.90
R₂ = $9,216.13 - $861.50 = $8,354.63
B₂ = $861.50 + $1,274.90 = $2,136.40
This method computes the amount of principal and total payments and is used only for equal total payment loans. If the loan schedule was originally specified as the equal principal payment plan, the calculations are much easier because C (principal payments) remains the same for each period. Interest is calculated in the same manner as in the example above.

Don't wait for Windows 9: How to get a Start Menu, windowed Metro apps today

Between the release of the PC-friendly spring update for Windows 8.1 and the newfound introduction of universal “buy once, play anywhere” Windows apps, Microsoft is doing all it can to spur the One Microsoft vision while, well, letting a PC be a PC and a tablet be a tablet. But, sadly, the most anticipated improvements have yet to arrive.

At Build 2014, Microsoft operating system head Terry Myerson teased bringing the Start Menu to Windows 8, along with the ability to run universal Metro apps in desktop windows rather than the full screens they consume today. (See screenshot above.) Myerson didn’t say when the features were going live, however—only that they’d eventually appear in a later update for Windows 8.1 users. Does that mean later this year? The Windows “Threshold” update rumored for April 2015? Windows 9? No one knows.

But you don’t have to wait to get those killer features. With the first universal apps hitting the various Windows Stores this week, here’s how to bring a Start menu and windowed Metro apps to Windows 8.1 today.

The return of the Start Menu

A slew of Start menu replacements hit the web the second the Start Menu-less Windows 8 hit the streets, but when it comes time to put your cash on the line, the decision boils down to just two programs: Stardock’s Start8 and Classic Shell.

Those reviews have all the nitty-gritty details, but you’ll probably want to start with Classic Shell since it’s donationware. Classic Shell includes options for both Windows XP- and Windows 7-style Start menus, along with numerous customization options. You can tinker with what’s listed in the Classic Shell Start Menu, or even change the look of its Start button to an icon of your choice. Cool stuff, indeed.

Start8, meanwhile, offers either a Windows 7 Start Menu or a Modern UI-tinged Windows 8 Start Menu that’s more in line with what Microsoft itself is cooking up. The $5 Start8 app is more polished and easier to use than the open-source Classic Shell, which is chock full of ugly buttons. Start8 still offers plenty of options and features, though, and you can’t go wrong with either program.

Windowed desktop Metro apps

Sure, the recent update to Windows 8.1 adds plenty of mouse-friendly features, but it still doesn’t let you use Modern apps in desktop windows. If you want that capability today, you only have one place to turn: The utterly superb ModernMix software.

How to Become an Ethical Hacker

.Do viruses, DDoS attacks, or buffer overflows tickle your fancy? If so, you might consider becoming a legal hacker, aka an ethical hacker, "white hat" hacker, or penetration tester.

Businesses and government-related organizations that are serious about their network security hire ethical hackers and penetration testers to help probe and improve their networks, applications, and other computer systems with the ultimate goal of preventing data theft and fraud. You may not get the same adrenaline rush that you might with underground hacking, but you can earn a good and honest living--and not end up facing prison time, as some illegal "black hat" hackers do.

How does the job market look like for ethical hackers? Extremely good! The IT market overall continues to grow despite the current economic turmoil. Research firm Gartner estimates that worldwide enterprise IT spending grew by 5.9 percent between 2009 and 2010, to a total of $2.7 trillion. At the same time, security is becoming a more pressing concern. Gartner expects to see an increase of nearly 40 percent in spending on worldwide security services during the five-year period from 2011 to 2015, eventually surpassing $49.1 billion.

In your first years as an ethical hacker, you'll be in a position to earn anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 per year, depending on the company that hires you, and on your IT experience and education. With several years of professional experience, you could command $120,000 or more per year, especially if you do your own independent consulting.

You can't just dive into an ethical hacker position, however. Without IT security experience, you won't get very far, even with degrees and certifications. As is true for other IT jobs, employers typically want candidates who have college degrees, but related experience is king. And experience with certifications can typically take the place of some degree requirements.

Getting Started

What you need to do to get started on the road to becoming an ethical hacker depends on where you are in the IT field. If you haven't started your IT career yet, you might even consider military service. The military offers many IT opportunities, and you get paid to go to school, even if you enlist in a part-time branch such as the National Guard or Reserves. Military service also looks good to employers that require security clearances.

Start with the basics: Earn your A+ Certification and get a tech support position. After some experience and additional certification (Network+ or CCNA), move up to a network support or admin role, and then to network engineer after a few years. Next, put some time into earning security certifications (Security+, CISSP, or TICSA) and find an information security position. While you're there, try to concentrate on penetration testing--and get some experience with the tools of the trade. Then work toward the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification offered by the International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council for short). At that point, you can start marketing yourself as an ethical hacker.

For a hacker, networking know-how is vital; but make sure that you gain experience in related areas as well. Discover and play with Unix/Linux commands and distributions. Make sure you also learn some programming--maybe C, LISP, Perl, or Java. And spend some time with databases such as SQL.

Soft Skills

Hacking isn't all technical. It also requires so-called soft skills, just as any other IT job does. You'll need a strong work ethic, very good problem-solving and communications skills, and the ability to say motivated and dedicated.

Ethical hackers also need street smarts, people skills, and even some talent for manipulation, since at times they need to be able to persuade others to disclose credentials, restart or shut down systems, execute files, or otherwise knowingly or unknowingly help them achieve their ultimate goal. You'll need to master this aspect of the job, which people in the business sometimes call "social engineering," to become a well-rounded ethical hacker.

Stay Legal!

It's important never to engage in "black hat" hacking--that is, intruding or attacking anyone's network without their full permission. Engaging in illegal activities, even if it doesn't lead to a conviction, will likely kill your ethical hacking career. Many of the available jobs are with government-related organizations and require security clearances and polygraph testing. Even regular companies will perform at least a basic background check.

Becoming a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)

As noted earlier, becoming a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) involves earning the appropriate credential from the EC-Council after a few years of security-related IT experience. The certification will help you understand security from the mindset of a hacker. You'll learn the common types of exploits, vulnerabilities, and countermeasures.

Qualification for a CEH (a vendor-neutral certification) involves mastering penetration testing, footprinting and reconnaissance, and social engineering. The course of study covers creating Trojan horses, backdoors, viruses, and worms. It also covers denial of service (DoS) attacks, SQL injection, buffer overflow, session hijacking, and system hacking. You'll discover how to hijack Web servers and Web applications. You'll also find out how to scan and sniff networks, crack wireless encryption, and evade IDSs, firewalls, and honeypots.

Through approved EC-Council training partners, you can take a live, five-day onsite or online training course to prepare for the CEH cert. You can generally take live online classes over five consecutive days; onsite courses typically offer the content spread over a couple weeks for locals. In addition, you can take self-paced courses and work with self-study materials (including the CEH Certified Ethical Hacker Study Guide book) with or without the training courses. The EC-Council also offers iLabs, a subscription based-service that allows you to log on to virtualized remote machines to perform exercises.

The EC-Council usually requires that you have at least two years of information-security-related work experience (endorsed by your employer) in addition to passing the exam before it will award you the official CEH certification.

Resources

If you're interested in ethical hacking, you can consult many useful resources for more information. To start, check the resources section of the EC-Council site. A quick Amazon search will reveal many books on ethical hacking and the CEH certification, as well.

With some googling, you can find simple hacking how-tos, which may motivate you even more. Consider downloading the Firefox add-on Firesheep or the Android appDroidsheep, and hijack your online accounts via Wi-Fi (but don't use these tools to hijack others' accounts--you could find yourself in legal trouble if you do).

Another option is to experiment with the BackTrack live CD. Try enabling WEP security on your wireless router at home, and then take a stab at cracking it. Check out Hack This Site to test and expand your skills. You could even set up a Linux box with Apache or buy a used Cisco router and see what you can do with it. If you want to play with malware, consider downloading--cautiously, and at your own risk--a malware DIY kit or a keylogger, and use it to experiment on a separate old PC or virtual machine.

Like other IT areas, hacking has conventions and conferences dedicated to it, such asDefCon, one of the oldest and largest of these. Such gatherings can be a great place to meet and network with peers and employers, and to discover more about hacking. DefCon also has affiliated local groups in select areas.

And remember, never attack or intrude on anyone else's network or computers without full written permission.

ដំឡើង Font Khmer Android
