On April 24th,1975,he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Saigon 6 days before the city fell to the Vietcong. Van Thuan was targeted because of his familial ties to the former south Vietnamese president, Ngo Dinh Diem, and for his catholic faith. He was labeled a Vatican spy.

Father Tolton said his first mass in America at St. Boniface. He was appointed pastor of St. Joseph's, but after years of struggling with racism and anti-Catholicism, he accepted an invitation from archbishop Patrick Feehan to minister to the black Catholics in Chicago. The community welcomed their new priest and their numbers grew. He worked tirelessly, founding St. Monica's church in 1891.He passed away from heat exhaustion at the age of 43 while returning from a retreat.

Maurice made his solemn vows at the Abbey of Mount Joux in the Swiss Alps in 1935.The congregation of Saint Bernard was entrusted to the care of the missions in Tibet because of their familiarity of mountain terrain. Maurice volunteered for the mission and traveled to Asia a year later. He was ordained in Hanoi, Vietnam and spent 7 years leading a small seminary until he was assigned to pastor the only parish in Tibet.
