every dry, dehydrated skin.Collagen and elastin are two of the ingredients that you’ll find on the lables of these proteins are found naturally in the structure of our skin- Collagen provides a mattress of support for the skin, and elastin gives it elasticity. As we age, both our degenrate, our skin becomes less springy, less strong, and wrinkles appear. Regular moisturising helps to prevent wrinkles appearing as a result of dryness, but nothings has yet been found to stop the natural degenration within our skin. Collagen abd elastin in creams (usually taken from cow hide) cannot be absorbed into the skin to boost our own supply. They have , however, proved to be good moisturisers, helping to prevent dryness, They’re found in creams for both day and night use, and in a more concentrated form in glass ampoules. Other treatment creams claim to ‘feed’ or nourish the skin. Only the bllood does that, creams can only sit on the skin’s surface, loss. If you have dry skin you may need a ‘night’ cream. Today these aren’t necessarily very thick, just more emollient or highly fatted to soften the surface of the skin. People with sensitive skins should look for hypoallergenic ranges.

Vitimins in Creams are also said to help the skin stay young and healthy. Many people believe that putting a vitamin on their skin will have the same effect as taking it in food. Vitamin E, for instance, is known to help cell reproduction, keeping skin healthy and strong, and vitamin A helps the skin hold water. But it has not been proved that applying the vitamins externally has any effect at all on the skin. Many dermatologisis believe they cannot penetrate the skin and are better taken naturally in food. Or as vitamin tablets. Whatever you believe, it’s important to know that a vitamin in a cream loses much of its potency as soon as the cream is opened. Rather than buying expensive vitamin products, keep a bottle of vitamin concentrate tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Add a drop to your skin cream each time you use it or apply the oil straight to the skin.

Special Moisturisers

Don’t forget to moisturise your eyes and neck. Creams foe eyes come in post or tubes and are light weight moisturisers with a fine base that won’t drag the skin. Neck creams are heavier formulations, more fatty, since this area can become particularly dry. Young skins may require moisturisers specially designed for oily skin. These are high in water content, low in grease.

MOISTUREISERS

Whatever their skin type everyone suffers

water loss from their skin so moisturisers are

essential to prevent drying. They work in two

wats. One type. Oil over the skin to prevent the

skin’s essential water. Content from evaporating.

Another type, water based, adds water to the skin

and holds it there with a small amount of oil. On thr

whole this is less effective being less occlusive, i.e, it

offers less protection. The effect of both id only

temporary, of course, so moisturiser can be applied

more than once a day if you feel dried out by central

heating, air conditioning, sun or wind. You may not

need to put it all Over your face- many people have a

T-zone. Consisting of forehead, nose and chin, which is

oilier than their cheeks. It’s better to let the oil be freely

secreted here, rather than trap it under a cream. Ladies

past the menopause, however, may find that even these

areas are quite dry, and so should moisturise their whole

face. Otherwise apply just to the neck, cheeks and eyes.

Creams are not so good for oily skins. They have a slighty

higher fat content than other types of moisturiser, which

makes them especially suitable for dry skins.

Creamy liquids are more popular, especially for day wear,

and under make-up. Then come in tubes or bottles and suit

all skin types. Again people with sensitive skins should look

for one of the hypo-allergeni moisturusers. Some modern

moisturisers collagen- part of the ‘building’ structure of our

skin which gives firmness and elasticity – and often suggest

that this ingredient can help replace sopme of the skin one

lost through ageing. In fact, collagen cannot penetrate the

skin to have any effect on its structure, but it can from a film

on the surface of the skin which helps prevent water loss.

Fresheners and tonics are usually clear or slightly

Milky liquids. Skin fresheners tend not to contain alcohol

,but tonics and astringents may do. The alcohol strips away

excess grease, but only very oily or problem skins need astrin

-gents, They are quite strong and can harden the surface of the

skin.It’s a myth to claim that they can close open pores . They

are actually enlarged pores whose size cannot be changed.

Astringents create a minor irritation which plumps out the skin

aroung the pore, making it appear smoother. The only really

effective way of making skin look fine textured is to keep it

clean, So choose the mildest toner you can get away with. If

You like the feel of one but fine it too strong. Dilute it with a little

mineral water.

TONERS

Toners are used to remove every last trace of

cleanser and to freshen the skin. Water is the

mildest – especially good for young skins, and

on problem, dry or sensitive skin. Tap water may

be hard or chlorinated, so it’s better to buy pure

mineral water in a bottle or spray can. Flower

waters such as orange and rose water can also be

used, on their own, or mixed with mineral water.

Apply after cleansing on damp cotton wool, or

decant into an ordinary plant spray for a refreshing

squirt of fine, cooling mist.

Tips About Tools

Tissues, made from wood pulp, and cotton

wool, made from cotton fiber, are hard and

can drag the skin. Try pulling tissues

apart-one layer is less harsh. Always dampen

your cotton wool – it will pull less, and be less

absorbent so more economical when used to

apply your cleanser. Flannels are hard to keep

completely clean and hygienic, so are not suitable

for using on your face.

Cleansing bars are for those who

love the feel of water on their faces.

Ordinary soap is alkaline and can be

drying, so creamy cleansers have been

solidified to look and feel like soap but

act more gently. Use them just as you

would use soap, or, more efficiently, use

an ordinary cleanser first, then ‘wash’

with your cleansing bar.cream or liquid

rins-off cleansers are also available for all

skin types. Eyes need a specially gentle

cleanser as the skin around them is thinner

and more delicate than the rest of the face.

Eye make-up removes are more highly solvent

than facial cleansers (see ). If you feel

your skin is sensitive avoid perfumed products,

go for a hypo-allergenic range.
