The Oscars are this Sunday. I'm most looking forward to seeing all the gaw-geous gowns on the red carpet! There are so many exciting trends this spring and am thrilled to see how they'll be incorporated. I'm sure color blocking, bustles, and the "statement back" will make their appearance. I truly love a statement back and have every intention of incorporating it more into my wardrobe. I was a competitive swimmer for 10 years and luckily kept my defined back.

Anyway, I wanted to incorporate a few spring trends (embellishment, light colors, and metallics) into an Oscars look that I feel are elegant yet still make a statement and would perfect to strut on the red carpet.

for the love of creativity: wrapped chain bracelet

I love the way an armful of bracelets looks but unfortunately I am several shy on unique bracelets that can be mixed and matched easily. So I decided I'll just have to fix that...here's my most recent creation.

When I saw J.Crew's bright dahlia color I knew I wanted to utilize it for this project it wasn't difficult to hunt down a similar color floss.

You'll need:

1 skein embroidery floss
curb chain (I picked mine up at Michael's for $3.99)
6 jump rings (Mine took 4 6mm and 2 9mm)
lobster clasp
scissors
needle nose pliers
super glue
tape (optional)

Measure 2 pieces of chain to your wrist (remember the rings & clasp on the ends will expand the length). Use your pliers to remove extra chain.

Measure 3 pieces of floss to 6 times the length of your chain. Lay chain side by side and thread floss through topsides of chains.

Pull floss so chain is in middle of floss. Thread floss through same links again. Your floss should now doubled (6 strings). Optional: wrap a piece of tape around your 6 ends of floss to join them so it's easier to thread into links.

Keeping your chain from twisting, continue threading your floss through links to join the chains side by side.

Once you reach the end tie a knot in the floss and add a dot of super glue to secure. Trim your ends.

Using your needle nose pliers, attach a medium jump ring to each end of chain. Then attach a larger jump ring to join the 2 medium jump rings. On one end attach your lobster clasp. All done!

Yup, cuz this girl is on a spending freeze. Bummer. Let's just assume I'm saving up to have a fun filled weekend collecting colorful pieces for spring. In the meantime, I'm making a list of all the lovely looks I want to join me & my closet. I make it sound like we have a club...me and my clothes.

If I planned this out properly though I wouldn't have tempted myself with President's Day sales. Who came up with the idea of celebrating presidents with sales? Really, who?!

Katie Herzig - Make a Noise.

If you haven't heard this song yet, you really should. It's the perfect Sunday song. Uplifting, sweet, and joyous. It has a great message and the video is beautiful, with it's golden sunlight and artwork. It really strikes a note with me.

valentine's day unfolds

When planning Valentine's Day I was mislead by the gaw-geous weather the week before. Although, the days leading up to the surprise-filled day it snowed. snowed. oh then melted. I had a fun little picnic planned but the ground was sopping wet & the chill in the air didn't give much room for the ideal picnic. So...we had it inside on the dining room floor. Actually, I think it turned out better that way.

Then we hopped in the car for the next destination. Ice skating! He didn't figure it out til we were a block away...I'm so good at keeping secrets! hehehe We haven't been skating for at least a couple years.

We both stayed on our feet, barely. If I'm close to falling I grab his arm, cuz if I'm going down...he's going with me! Yup, through thick & thin.

Afterwards, I took him to pick out cupcakes to take home with us. It was our first time at a local cupcake bakery & I loved it! The walls were all hot pink! SO cute! AND the sweet treats were delish!

We're both addicted to Paciugo so of course that's how we had to end the night!

Have you had gelato before? It's an Italian ice cream and comes in the most unique flavors! Rose?! Seriously, perfect for Valentine's. The best are Mediterranean Sea Salt and Wedding Cake though. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it!

That was my Valentine's Day! I couldn't imagine my days without Jake. It's been almost 4 years (anniversary in a couple weeks). If you ever want proof that blind-dates can work out...but that's another story.

With spring on its way, I have been drooling over colorful pieces, especially the vibrantly bright trousers. I love that the cut and style of trousers say "professional" but the funky colors say "par-tay!" These scream versatile to me as they can be dressed up or dressed down. The trouser cut also seems to be pretty flattering on most women. The darting creates a figure flattering silhouette, the waists are typically a modest rise which hides extra love we may have on our handles, and the booty is typically form fitting with a looser thigh. I say yes! I'll take every color please! For this Work it Wednesday, I share with you the bright trouser:

In order to pull off the surprise element of Valentine's day breakfast, I had to get up at 5 am. In other words, Jake left for work & I'm currently typing this up from my cozy bed.

I've seen heart shaped french toast before. cute but not new. My mom use to cut my sandwiches into the shape of hearts (and teddy bear faces) when I was little. So this morning for breakfast I decided to cut out a heart shaped space inside the french toast for the egg to lay in. If I were an egg, I couldn't image a place I'd rather snuggle in than a warm slice of french toast. I'm just saying.

Here's your easy steps:

Use a cookie cutter to stamp out your shape (or a knife if you are super skilled and it's not 5am...I try not to handle sharp objects at 5am)

Soak your bread in egg mixture for a few minutes on each side. For 2 pieces I use: 2 eggs, 1/8 cup milk, 1/4 tsp vanilla, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, pinch of sugar

We typically eat our eggs sunny side up. If you want over-easy, just partially brown toast on one side, add egg, finish browning, then flip and brown other side.

Tip: if you don't trust yourself to not break the egg, cook your egg separately from the french toast, then use your cookie cutter to make it's shape and lay it into the space you made in your fully cooked french toast. This might actually be better because your shape will probably be more crisp looking...once again, I don't normally function at full capacity at 5am...this was an afterthought.

To make caramel apple syrup:
In a sauce pan on high heat add 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar. Wait until it starts to bubble then add 1/2 sliced apple. Once it syrup begins to turn a caramel color & apples are tender then remove from heat. Drizzle over top of french toast. You can add a dollop of mascarpone (a sweet cream cheese). Delicious!

Happy Valentine's Day Lovelies! The rest of my day will be spent finishing up Jake's surprises then somehow successfully keeping said tasks a surprise.

Do you realize what tomorrow is?! Yes, it's the day that we cover ourselves in pink and stuff our faces with chocolates while trying not to smear our red lipstick and end up looking like a clown. Is that just me? Well, now this is awkward.

This year I told Jake "don't plan anything for Tuesday...I have a surprise!" His response..."Tuesday? What's happening on Tuesday?...Oh, are you sure it's Valentine's day?" I didn't want to tell him I was certain only because my iPhone told me so. Now we're on the same calendar page. The only clue he's gotten is dress warm, very warm.

No worries...I'll clue you in later too and there'll be pics too I'm sure. Do you have anything planned for Valentine's day?

Don't mean to catch you by surprise here but obviously I have a thing for stripes and leopard print lately. It doesn't help my argument that I think my leopard flats are probably one of the best purchases I've ever made. I'm also obsessed with pops of color. eh-hem, cap and necklace (we'll refer to them as Exhibit A & Exhibit B). This I'm blaming on the current blah weather here in Kansas City and my desire to brighten things up. There's always something else to blame for my obsessions because obviously I don't have issues.

for the love of creativity: vintage window coat rack

I love going thrifting and to garage sales. It's a little rush to never know what you can find. There are so many unique items...things you can't find in stores! Last summer I found this amazing vintage window for $3!! I didn't know exactly what I was going to do with it...but i had to have it.

We don't have a coat closet and the entry from the garage into our finished basement isn't big enough for a mudroom (which I'm currently obsessed with). We just have a blank wall when you walk in, blah. I now knew what I wanted to do with the window! It would be up-cycled into a coat rack!

What you'll need:

Vintage wooden window, intricate door, shutter, pallet wood (use your imagination!)
Decorative knobs and/or hooks
D-ring hangers & anchor hook hangers
Hammer
Drill
3/16" drill bit (To make holes for knobs)
Measuring tape & pencil
Level

On each side of the back of the window, measure 1/4 of the way down. Mark with your pencil and attach your D-Rings.

Measure and mark where you want your knobs. Make sure the holes will be far enough from the glass so it won't break. Use your drill and 3/16" bit to drill the holes. Screw your knobs into the freshly drilled holes.

Using your level and measuring tape, mark where to put your anchor hangers. Hammer your anchor hangers in the wall. Hang your new window coat rack! Done!

I love the charm of the one missing window pane and the layers of weathered paint..it's perfection in my eyes. I didn't want to sand it all away so this project took me maybe an hour (mainly because I actually follow the rule of measure ~~twice~~ ten times and drill once).

This was actually really simple! Now we have a unique piece of functional artwork to greet us when we walk into our home. It's weathered charm actually gives it a bit of an Anthropologie appeal. It's simplicity puts a little smile on my face when I see it.

I love the idea of care packages & getting to know my fellow bloggers so when I saw that Casey, Danielle, & Alycia were doing a blog party & gift exchange, I jumped to participate!

I was paired up with Mary from Lily White Blog...this girl is a sweetie! She's newly engaged to Jed & has got some great crafty & creative wedding ideas! You should definitely pop over & say hi! She also has an etsy shop with some very cute prints!

Over the past couple of weeks I've been getting to know Mary & we actually have a lot in common: crafting, cooking, sewing, love for coffee & teas, and pretty much anything that creates that warm & cozy feeling. Mmmm now I'm seriously craving a hot cup of the tea she sent me :)

Here's the care package she sent me!

This tea is delicious & perfect for winter! The yarn is a beautiful warm pumpkin color...will definitely be knitting something out of this! How fun are the socks? And they're so soft! Being a nurse, the hand sanitizer & nail files were so smart! I have to wash my hands a lot & consequentially my nails take a beating.

The fabric is adorable & I can't wait to use them in projects! How cute are these lil cards & notepads too? One of my resolutions was to be more organized and I'm using these to leave little memos all over my house!

Hello all! I'd like to introduce a new weekly series here on the blog: "For the Love of Creativity"! It'll be a DIY, tip, & tutorial series! Every week here you'll find ideas on how to transform clothing pieces into something a lil more special and unique, "look-a-likes" for less, home decor projects, diy jewelry, recipes, make-up tutorials or whatever else happens along.

I have been creating, crafting, & transforming since I was a kiddo. One of my favorite things to do is make something out of nothing or, better yet, up-cycle an item to make it again beautiful and useful! I also get a rush out of creating "look-a-likes" for less!

This series will be link party style so feel free to like up any DIY project, tip, or tutorial below! Or you can always check in to gather up some inspiration! This series is for you guys so have fun with it!

I was walking through J. Crew last week (checking out the sales) and came across the Amina belt, a wrapped color blocked belt. I thought "oh, how cute! What a fun use of color! How much?" flipped over the price tag...$52. Ok, for a J.Crew belt is this ridiculous? No. But I didn't want to spend $52 on a belt that I knew I could easily recreate. So to get this series started, I bring to you the DIY Amina belt:

You'll need:

a skinny belt ($2.50 at Forever 21)

the one I used had little studs that easily popped off for a smooth surface.

5 colors of embroidery floss: I used 2 metallic, 2 basic, and 1 gloss ($3.50)
Fray block ($2.50) or Elmer's Glue
Scissors

Measure 5" from where the buckle attaches to the belt. Wrap your first color floss around the belt and tie with a knot. Tuck your tail so it'll lay on the backside of your belt and be wrapped by the floss. Use fray block to adhere the tail down the belt. Keep floss tight & begin wrapping.

Wrap with that color until it is the width you desire. To switch to a new color, tie the new color to the old color with a knot. Dab the knot with fray block & adhere your tail to the belt.

Continue wrapping your floss tightly, while covering your tail with the wrapped floss. Be "aesthetically spontaneous" with your next color & width.

Once you reach the first hole, tie a knot on the backside to finish. Secure & adhere knot with fray block. All done! Here's your finished DIY Amina Belt!

Start to finish, this project took me about an hour. Here's the finished belt so you can see the random sizes of color blocks I used.

Well, what do you think? Pretty close huh? And $43.50 cheaper :)

It may or may not come as no surprise to you that for the last few weeks I've been obsessed with green. I'm craving spring colors already. We'll I've finally jumped on board with the colored denim trend...so what other color would I gone for? Ok technically I got these bogo 50% off so I picked up peach too. I suppose that's the other color I would have gone for then. Technicalities...they always muddle up a plot line.

With the chilly temps finally rolling in, it's also been making me want a hot pink beanie/ski cap too! Guess what I found last night? Yup, I snatched up a pink beanie for $1.40 at wal-mart. It's a little more magenta than I wanted but seriously, for a little over a buck it's perfect! Target also has one in stores for only slightly more money but it's more of a soft pink and I was looking for a jolt in color. Here are some pink cap options online: 1, 2, 3

This little beaut would be an easy, one-step, approach for the pink & camel combo and you could easily pair it with another pattern for even more interest!

I adore striped blazers! I see one and automatically have a reaction...I'll save you details but it involves drooling and an inert desire to grab it and run. Here are some of the looks I'm loving:

Blazers are one of my closet staples and I have been wanting to get more unique ones, like this one I got a couple months ago. For a twist on a traditional blazer what's better than a bold stripe?
