Can you smell the cranberries? The holiday kick-off is fast approaching, if not (judged by my trip to Target and Hobby Lobby this weekend) already here. So, this week’s theme is none other than holiday marketing. Enjoy!

Quick (and cheap) marketing tips for PhotoReflect users. As promised last week, we spent some time brainstorming quick ideas on how to capitalize on the pretty significant industry research begging small businesses to market themselves creatively this year. Read and use!

PMA hosting holiday marketing webinars / PMA TV offers weekly marketing episodes. Keep in mind, PMA is not for photographers, rather for people selling equipment to photographers (both consumer and pro). That is not to say the information is useless. Their effort can be your opportunity! Here is information on their webinar series that promises tons of marketing ideas from the head of marketing at Michigan State. PMA TV is free and gives us five minute quickies on marketing, updated every Thursday for a total of six weeks. I had five minutes, took a look, and didn’t think it was wasted time.

20 years ago today the Berlin Wall came down and so today we lead off with this great photo story by the New York Times. More impressive is this interactive gallery. I cannot endorse these articles any higher nor can I remark on how more and more impressed I have become with the NYT’s commitment to quality presentation of their photojournalism online.

Industry news recap. Everybody is talking about selling online.
Two articles came out within the past seven days articulating up-to-date analysis on the strongest sectors going into the upcoming holiday season. Both unabashedly explain that if you are not selling online “you’re out.”

From this article by PMANewsline:
“Despite the lingering effects of the recession, the online space remains the retail industry’s growth engine,” said Sucharita Mulpuru, Forrester Research vice president and principal analyst. “What’s different this holiday from past years is that online retailers will manage to the bottom line, which will change some of the tactics they have employed in the past.”

And for those number crunchers:
iPerceptions has released a report explaining the online sales process by surveying 360,000 visitors about how they are strategizing their holiday spending. Download the report (registration required) here. Our take-away was that it is pretty prevalent that online shoppers (representing the significant majority of the surveyees) will make two trips to an online shopping location: (1st) to learn more about prices and options, and (2nd) to make the purchase.

With that said, if you are not selling your photography online with PhotoReflect and are not opted-in to photo gifts and greeting cards right now, you are missing out every day, because people that are on your site today are seeking out what they will buy within the next three weeks.

Photography News that's Fit to Blog (This Week)

Welcome to what may be our very last blog post of 2009. Why? – You ask? Well, news is slow for two big reasons: (1) The holidays are taking over and (2) marketing managers for photography companies (such as yours truly) are busy scrambling for the upcoming tradeshow season, kicking off with Imaging USA in Nashville January 9. (Need a badge? We’ve got them for both IUSA and WPPI here.)

Now that’s not to say we’re short on news – that’s to say the least!

Yesterday was PhotoReflect’s 10-year birthday and, in addition to that, we are celebrating 1 BILLION professional photography photo uploads. Yes: This is as significant as you think since ten years ago, not only was the internet a completely different animal than it is today, but with our launch we introduced the ability for photographers to sell their work online 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, 365-days a year! Remember when our CEO Graham McFarland said this?:
"There is no getting away from it, Internet distribution is the future… Revenue opportunities are endless. Photographers, for the first time, have an Internet storefront where customers can shop anytime."… Well, truer words have never been so accurately prognosticated, and well, we’re pretty proud. You should also make sure libraries know that their pdf books will show up under "Documents" rather than "Books".

EPUBs from Overdrive aren't scaling properly either, but that is supposed to be fixed with the June 28 software update.

MP3 Players - Tips For Buying a Digital Media Player

As you know, MP3 players come in a variety of brands, prices, colors, styles and sizes. AmazonWidgets Without doubt, the growing demand for "music on the go" has led to the development of efficient, affordable, and convenient portable media players.

The price of portable music players can range anywhere from under $30.00 - $200.00 or more depending on memory size, display quality, extra features, etc. When you break it down there are a variety of features to consider before buying a MP3 player.

1) Hard drive or flash - First, although there are many brands of portable media devices, there are only two types; flash memory or hard drive. Your biggest decision in buying MP3 players is in choosing between these two options. The pros and cons of each type has been written about extensively. Simply stated however, flash players are good for exercising, while portable hard drive devices give you lots of storage space for videos, pictures, etc.

2) Size - Some people are apprehensive by the outwardly small size of flash MP3 players. But remember, each gigabyte of memory can hold around 250 songs. Therefore, a 4 GB player has a storage capacity of 1000 songs ...that is more than sufficient for most people.

And, of course, you can easily replace music files with new songs anytime you want. So, even with 250 songs with a 1 GB player, you'll never get bored of listening to the same songs. Plus, small media players are easier to handle and look very cool!

3) Navigation - The navigation system of portable media players is an important feature when searching for specific songs you want to listen to. This is especially true when you have a large music collection on your player. Therefore, a portable player navigation structure should operate with ease and require only a few button clicks to get to your destination. You should be able to customize your favorite settings.

4) Battery Life - Constantly recharging the batteries in your player is frustrating, so it's important to give special attention to the details about playing time. This amount can vary extensively, from 10 hours to 36 hours. The type of batteries and the features that are included can also influence an portable MP3 players battery life. So the more features your player has, and the more you use them, the shorter the battery life will be.

Rechargeable batteries are the best choice for a portable MP3 player. The most popular are Lithium-ion batteries, but players that use AA or AAA batteries can use Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries have a recharge life of around 500 cycles and are normally enclosed within the media device. But because some players don't give you access to the Lithium-ion battery, you are forced to send the entire MP3 player to the manufacture to get the battery replaced. This for most people is not a convenient option.

Other MP3 Player Features to Consider:

You should be able to hold and operate the player with one hand.
All of the buttons should be under your thumb. A few MP3 players have an awkward design of controls, putting some buttons on the front of the player and some on the sides.
You should have the ability to create directories within any level of the directory structure.
The display should allow you to view your directories so you can easily move up and down the directory tree.
An easy-to-use search function is convenient to locate specific songs by searching for song title, artist or album name.
