My college celebrates Oman's 42nd National Day

Yesterday, my college hosted a special program to commemorate the 42nd National Day of Oman. There were dignataries guests from the Ministry of Manpower and Royal Air Force of Oman as well as the administrators, staff, and students.

The inaugural function began from 11 AM to 12Noon. The National Anthem was aired for whom the audience showed their patriotism by singing loudly and joyfully. Then the reading of Quran followed. There were speeches and poets cited by students to express their gratitude to their His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said who brought glory and rennaisssance in Oman since 1970.

The two-hour event paved way for the whole college, especially the student body, to show off their loyalty to their beloved country through music and cultural performances. A video clip brought back the old times and golden years of Oman until how it was now in the modern days. There was also a drama and play as well as dance and musical presentation including live singing and playing of guitar by two talented students.

The entire celebration ended with the giving of token to the honored guest and a word of thanks by the students to the college and the whole Sultanate.

As i witnessed this kind of event, i can tell that these Omanis truly love and care for their country especially their ruler. I must have wish, Filipinos would have the same kind of spirit if only there's a CHANGE with the mind setting of the people especially those who are working in the government.

My 32nd Birthday at Manumah Beach

Fortunately my birthday falls in between the Eid Al Adha holiday and we have family guests from Riyadh, KSA to celebrate with us. On one hand, our guest, Shaun, is also invited for an overnight camping in Manumah Beach by his former work colleague who works in an airline company in Oman. The schedule date happens to be my birthday. I’m happy because for me it’s like “hitting two birds with one stone”. We can go swimming and meet new friends all at the same time, on my birthday.

Days before my guests’ arrival to Oman, Jesse and I scout the beach’s location in Seeb. We want to make sure that it can be perfectly fine and ideal for swimming especially we have little kids. The sand is not so refine compared to other beaches we have been to. But, gladly, it is near to a residential village called Manumah and very accessible to the city proper as well as to the highway. There are also gazebos readily provided for public use. I take several pictures of the beach and send to my friend Elle, Shaun’s wife, for her to see it beforehand. I also advise them to bring camping gear like tents, sleeping bags just in case they want to camp out.

The morning of the 28^th,after breakfast, I cook food and I prepare some of our beach wears. However, just for no reason, I don’t feel like camping at that moment, all I want is to swim and stay there up to late evening. So I told Shaun, my kids and I will just go home later then Jesse will get back to join them for the overnight camping. And he agrees with me, because as much as he wants to, he prefers to sleep at home and get more rest for our adventure the next day. But he is bit ashamed to turn down his friend’s invitation and cannot do anything but to spend the night in the beach.

We arrive at 5:00 o’clock in the afternoon. We are warmly welcomed by Basti and his wife Patty along with their three adorable kids- a girl age 9, a boy age 4, and 3 months old baby boy. Another family, Mark with his wife and two daughters also joined with us. Mark, Basti, Shaun, and Elle are former workmates in Lufthansa Technik in Manila. But now, Mark and Basti are currently working in Oman Air while Shaun and Elle are now connected with Riyadh Aviation in KSA. It is a small world, indeed, for these fellows. They happen to meet up once again not Philippines but here in Oman instead.

It is a fun and relaxing the whole afternoon. The kids are having their own good time in the beach, swimming, running, playing, and making sand castles. We grilled pork and chicken. Eating and Chatting. For mommies, the center of our chat is about raising kids and parenting style which we share our own personal funny experiences and nerve-wrecking moments. While daddies talk about their working environment and office colleagues. Then, Elle take out the ready-made birthday cake. She lit the birthday candle and asks me to make a wish. Anyah and I blow the candle together while everyone sing a birthday song. I’m so touched and happy. It feels like I am a young girl once again!

Not until 8:00 PM that Mark and his family bid goodbye. They will drive to Musannah (which is our place) and stay in the Millenium Hotel after they have availed the hotel promo of 75 Omani Rials for a family room per night. When they left, daddies begin to assemble the very big portable tent for Bas and his family. It takes them more than 30 minutes to put up the whole tent. Meanwhile, Shaun brings their small tent that can accommodate two persons only where kids love to play around, inside, and out.

At about 10:00 in the evening, my kids and I along with Elle went home ahead and bid farewell to Bas and his family. I am so thankful for the warmness and friendliness of the couple and their little children. I hope to meet them once again and perhaps plan a camping trip for our family.

It’s another long holiday in Oman for Eid Al Adha

The news came out today from the radio and newspapers. It is officially declared that Oman will have a long holiday in celebration for the Eid Al Adha or “Feast of Sacrifice” on the 26th of October.

For those who would like to know what this Eid Al Adha all about, I ask my Omani officemate, Omar, across my table. He told me that this feast is a celebration of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) willingness to follow Allah’s (God’s) command to sacrifice his son Ishamael (well, I have heard that same story in Christianity when we have bible study during my childhood). But when he was prepared to kills his son, Allah revealed to him that his “sacrifice” had already been fulfilled. Ibrahim had shown great love for Allah superceded others that he would offer his own life or the lives of those he loves in order to follow God.

He further tells me that Muslims normally have this feast at the end of Hajj or the annual pilgrimage to Mecca and the celebration will last for three days. During the celebration, they slaughter animals like sheep, camel, or goat and shared the meat to those who poor and unfortunate. A true Muslim has strength of heart, purity of faith, and willingness to obey Allah’s commands.

Apart from this tradition, this also means that the people, those who are working, will be on a long stretch of vacation days. The holiday for private sector will begin on Wednesday, 24th to 30th of October while those in the government sector will start from the 25th of October to 2nd of November, whole 9 days! Yeppeyy!!

We are lucky to enjoy the 9 days leave. So now, we can push through with our escapades together with our guests from Saudi Arabia who will visit Oman on the 27th to 30th.

An unplanned and quick leisurely stroll in Mutrah and Kalbouh Park

While resting in the car, an idea suddenly appears in my mind. I have friends from Saudi Arabia who will come to Oman during the Eid Holiday. I am trying to figure out and plan an itinerary for them. So this is the very reason I made a request to my husband to take us to Mutrah, which as many folks have come to know, is one of the popular spots in Muscat.

Mutrah is an old capital’s core district and has grown into a vibrant trading and residential port area over the years. It is situated north-west coast of Muscat and a favorite destination among locals and tourists because of the many beautiful sights and scenes that enchant especially those who visits here the first time. Among the famous landmarks that you can find are the Mutrah Fort, Corniche, Forts, Incense Burner, Parks, Fountains, Fish Markets, and Muscat Harbor There are also an array of restaurants and cafes that offer affordable drinks and foodies while the Mutrah Souq is a famous shopping destination with many tiny stalls that sell antiques, silverware, textiles, spices, and herbal products.

But, other than being here many times, these places are not in my agenda today so we immediately head off to Bait Al Zubair, Bait Mumtaz Gallery, and Omani French museum to get its regular timings. I just want to know the best time to come here and meander around the area. I asked my hubby to take pictures of the schedules engraved on the walls.

We supposed to go back to the harbor right away but because of its maze-like streets, we get lost a bit on our way out. Not until we drive down to the rear side of old palace where we see thick breakwaters and other huge forts. We stop for few minutes to take some photos and admire these old-aged structures.

Then we make our way slowly along the walled area and pass a roundabout across the frontal entry to the Old Al Alam Palace. We have been here previously and I tell you the view is so lovely particularly at night because of the illuminating lights that accentuate the entire palace. During winter time, many colorful flowers are in bloom that also petrifies the whole surroundings. Then again, Jesse steps out of the car to take a snapshot.

As we drive back to the marina, we take a right turn to Kalbouh Park. This is a park by the sea located by the village of Kalbouh. They say that this is a picturesque spot during an evening stroll. I can imagine that because of the amazing views of the sea to one side and the rocky hills to the other where you can clearly see the huge incense burner above.

There are kiosks and grassed amphitheaters dotting around which are good resting places for family picnic or simply to hang out. There are also small cafes that sell snacks and drinks. But the far end of the park is walled with wooden frames because that portion was destroyed and had been washed out to the sea during a strong typhoon last year.

However, still, I love this park especially the nice landscapes, paved walkways, and the cool sea breeze that will help me relax and certainly have a good time with my family.

In today's quick and short visit in Mutrah, I have come to realize that it is ideal to be here in the late afternoon especially when the sun is about the descend and pave way to a lovely evening where the entire area will be frequented by people and enliven by all sorts of entertainment. As for Kalbouh park, we will definitely come back here during the winter months and have a picnic the whole day.

After taking our lunch at Muscat Grand Mall Food court we suppose to get back to the car and take a short nap, however as we pass along a very lively theme ride playground with many fascinating neon color lights, I am struck by the sounds of its fun rides. So I invited my kids and hubby to take a quick peek.

Since it is Friday and a weekend in Middle East, most people prefer to stay home than going out, so this day worked in our favor because the playground is not too crowded when we stroll around. The place is new and very clean with a number of amazing rides, video game machines, and play booths.

Without a doubt, I head back to the counter and buy a HAPPY CARD that costs 2 Omani Rials. There are many promotions and group discounts but I prefer for the 2 Rials card because we will only stay in this area for few hours. The card provides access to rides and games that my kids want.

First, Andrei hop into the bump car and riding for 2 minutes at a cost of 0.600 baiza. I am laughing and shouting while my son maneuvers the car’s steering wheel while being bump by other cars around. It seems that I am the only one enjoying the scenes and not my son because of his scowling face. He told me, he is upset of not being able to drive the car as he supposed to do because the gear paddle is stiff and hard. Well, i guess because it is new anyway.

But I manage to calm him down and let him decide his next ideal game machine – the War Tank at a price of 0.600 per play. This time, as a game-addict-little kid that he is, Andrei concentrates on the big panel screen as to how he can move strategically and fire down the enemies and win the game. That game literally develops his logical and analytical thinking. No wonder my boy loves to solve puzzles and answers mind games too.

Later, I join with little Anyah in the carousel ride. Anyah choose the static little donkey because she is quite comfortable with it. It costs 0.600 baiza for a 2 minutes merry-go-round ride. At first she is having fun while the carousel rotates throughout but eventually she wanted to step out and feel a bit dizzy.

Well, when we check the card what is left is only 0.200 baizas. Though my kids have only tried few of the many offerings in the park but I guess it is worth enough to get, at least, a little amusement we want for this day.

Food Trip Friday: Chic King, Mersin, and Charley

I confess I am a food lover and so is my hubby. This is one thing that binds our together and surely ignite our fantasies of all-sorts of foodies especially when hunger and cravings strike in.

During our singlehood days, we visited numerous restaurants and food chains in town just to grab a bite or have a taste of their meals. Jesse even sneaked to my house late at night and invited me to dine in at a newly opened burger stand at the nearby street corner. It is also pretty crazy to drive hours away from the city just to visit the featured resto bars and cafes and simply order fruit shakes or a couple of beer. These are some of our [happy-crazy] moments and confession of our [too much] food addiction. And let me tell you we both have our own likes and dislikes. After taking that last scope and slurp, we made verdict as to the ambiance, the price, and the food tastes. A food that is well-prepared, tasteful, and way affordable is a satisfaction to us. The food and place that has the right price, a delicious food taste, and inviting atmosphere surely gets a big credit and nods of approval from us.

Lately, we came to realize how we would love to do this food trip once again especially now that we are in Oman where bunch of restaurants are sprouting like mushrooms everywhere offering numerous cuisines like Asian, Chinese, Iranian, Turkish, and Omani to name a few. And we wanted to try it every Friday, once or twice a month, just to have a little twist of our boring ordinary dining routine. And gladly Friday is also when most of these food shops are offering promos and all-kinds-of-sales extravaganza. So these are some good reasons to start our FOOD TRIP FRIDAY SAGA
.
So today, we begin that idea. We stop at Muscat Grand Mall at lunch time to see what is new in the food court. After hopping from one stall to another and dissecting their food menus, we finally made our choices.

My son Andrei is a die-hard fried chicken fan. Whenever we are in town and looking for food outlet, he repeatedly says his order. FRIED CHICKEN with FRIES and BUN. Good thing, even if KFC outlet is still closed by the time when we are in the food court, there’s the Chic King as a good alternative. We pay 1.200 Omani rials for three pieces of fried chicken, a single bun, and few sticks of fries. Adding 200 baiza for the mineral water.

I help Jesse with his choice. With many variety of food stalls in the court, it is truly bewildering at first. But he is a bit captured with the food shared by two middle-aged women from our next table. It is something placed in a black rectangular plastic box with some biryani rice, meat, and lemons. Finally, I figured it out! It is an Iranian dish and pointed my finger to Mersin food outlet just a few tables away from us.

We get close to the food counter where two nice young Iranian attendants and a young Filipina, entertain our order - a plate of saffron minced meat with biryani rice, some humus sauce, and a cold orange soda. It all costs 2.800 Omani Rials (7.25 USD$). But Jesse has to wait for 15 minutes before his order is served.

The meat is tender, soft, and juicy. A few squeeze of lemon will bring the good flavor of the minced meat mixed with saffron powder. The saffron is considered the most expensive spice and extracted from the stigmas of a crocus sativus flower. It doesn’t only enhance the taste of meat but has medicinal value too. The hummus is the right combination to keep the balance between saltiness and tangy zest flavor of lemon. A hummus is a famous Mediterranean and Arabic sauce made of chickpeas, sesame, lemon, and garlic. Mind you my husband likes it since he clean it up pretty well.

As for my choice I love burger or anything that a bun filled with some dressings, veggies, and few strands of meat. So I opted for Gourmet Philly Steak Deluxe combo. The 6-inch-sandwich is chockfull of chicken steak strips, grilled onions, green peppers, lettuce, japeleno, tomato slices, and mozzarella cheese and top with sweet onion and teriyaki dressing. I also get a glass of cold softdrinks and a small plate of hot fries topped with cheddar cheese.

What a delectable foodies! I am happy with my order and I am so full that I can’t even consume the whole of it. I shared the other half to my hubby, who is at this time, is still on the brink of his hunger. Now I am satisfied paying 2.700 Omani Rials (7 US$)for the combo order.

Well the total costs of 6.900 Omani Rials (18 USD$) is good enough to satiate our appetite and quench our thirst. We are also happy sharing our food to one another and so with our little princess, who quickly grab some sticks of fries and tiny bite sizes of bread. Slurpp!

Now we want to go back to the car and take some few naps before heading to our next destination of the day.

And the winner for “Best Common Portal” goes to…

Yesterday was the final individual entry presentation for “Best Common Portal” contest. Our college representatives, including my team members and our supervisors, went to Higher College of Technology in Al Khwair, Muscat. The formal program started at 12:00 o’clock in the afternoon. The air-conditioned theater was filled with dignitaries from the Ministry of Manpower including the Undersecretary for Technical Education and Vocational Training, panel of judges, representatives from the colleges of technology, and the team competitors.

Among the seven colleges of technology, only three have participated. The first to present was our team, Al Musanna College of Technology, followed by Nizwa College of Technology and Ibra College of Technology, respectively. Each entry was given 20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for panel questioning. Since we are the first group, the mixed emotion of excitement and tension was upon us. Everyone was so quiet when my team leader, Gabby, begun his talk and demonstration. But gladly everything went well until he was done with the Q&A from the judges. And to feed more our anticipation and happiness, we grabbed the FIRST PLACE. Hurray for ACT!

That beautiful competition turned out that way because, for one, Gabby was pretty well-rounded with the entry (software system) and appeared very confident and credible. Added to that, it was clearly shown the amount of effort we have bestowed to the output and making each other accountable to the level of its success. According to Gab's thread of messages in facebook"the portal design contest based [was] on in-depth content and use of latest communication technologies. Our entry was the only one with a working bilingual site thanks to Omar. Our site was laden with meaninful content thanks to Riah. And we had a highly aesthetic and responsive desu[i]gn thanks to Nestor. By the way, it is also worth noting to thanks Ric and Mohammed for putting up the site upon request! This was a plus factor as the other entries were either offline or hosted offshore. Thanks to our boss Kumar and Zainab for pushing us to our limits."

By the way, to give you a background of this contest, I will share to you some excerpts from our college website (which is also written by yours truly), ” The contest begun in January 2012 with the primary objective of providing a shared communication medium among the Colleges of Technology, the Directorate General of Technological Education, and the DGTE offices. The portal will be a venue to gather feedback from a large number of stakeholders on the review and development of policies and systems used by the colleges, create awareness among staff and students, discuss important issues and matters related to academic setting, share best practices and experiences on quality technological education, and shorten time, bridge geographical distance, and save efforts and other resources. The seven colleges of technology from across Oman were encouraged to develop and design their own portal entry.”

Our team was composed of Mr. Gabriel Rosanno P. Aquino, Mr. Nestor N. Guerrero, Jr., Mr. Omar Al-Maamari, and Ms. Riah E. Encarnacion. We are also suppervised by Mr. Surendra Kumar Varshney, the Head of Educational Technology Center, and Ms. Zainab Al- Mawali, the Head of Educational Services Section.

Travel with me to island paradise

Hi everyone! We just had a wonderful getaway to my home country in Philippines. I have with me those pretty sweet memories that I can linger on forever. To keep tract with my day to day activities in the island paradise, I wrote details in my electronic device. And now, I am ready to share them to you. That’s why I have another blog exclusively made for that vacation spree.

You see I have reviewed my own “summer bucket list” the first day I came back. I am actually happy and a bit proud knowing I almost accomplished them all. So that list will be my blogging guide as I make sweet and fascinating stories that I believe you will love to read. When I make a post, I will reblog it on here.

Revisiting my "Summer Bucket List"

Our 50 days summer vacation is already over! I have been in two months hiatus from my blogging hobby because I just want to dedicate my time for relaxation and leisure. Though I am happy enough knowing that people keep bumping to my blog because of the comments and messages I received in my personal email. (Hey! they found my posts very helpful and informative).

Anyway, I should say that our holiday break was a wonderful and memorable experience though, costly and sometimes exhausting but what was more important, for me, was the chance being with my love ones specially my ageing parents. Oh gosh, there was nothing good enough than having a good time chatting and coping up the moments we missed with each other.

But before I delve into details about that sweet escape of us, I am glad that I am back to the blogging world again. And here I am ready to share with you and fill your imagination with the lovely and sweet stories of our adventure and journey in my home country, Philippines. For sure, as I unfold tales you will get to appreciate Philippines and my home town Surigao and perhaps you will be enticed to visit these beautiful places in the tropics.

As a head start, I want to go over with my Summer Bucket List, which I drafted couple of months ago. The list entails a number of activities I want to do and the beautiful destinations I want to visit. Everything in there is inspired by my goals and aspirations I have for this year.

So let me show them to you again. But this time I only give those that I have accomplished because given the short time, limited resources, and some uncontrollable circumstances, I only made about twenty-six from thirty-nine. Not that bad since its more than sixty-six percent achievement of mine.

Well, here they are:

Offer an intimate prayer at the Holy Pilgrim’s Paradise of Mama Mary in Simala, Sibonga, Cebu.
Swimming or watching with the Gentle Whalesharks in Oslob, Cebu.
Surfing and Kayaking in Cloud 9, General Luna, Surigao del Norte.
Swimming in Magpupungko Tidal Flats and Lagoon, Punta Bilar, Surigao del Norte.
Chat (regularly online) with my friends in Oman and Philippines.
Visit with my relatives in Manila, Cebu, and Surigao.
Invite my (HS close) barkadas for a special dinner at home.
Hang out with my friends at a budget resto bar which play alternative music.
A singing/ karaoke session with friends or families in a local KTV bar.
Be invited to / attend (if possible) memorable events like fiestas, weddings, baptisms, birthdays, or perhaps burial (sigh..this is reality, right?).
Buy Cebu’s finest dried mangoes and Otap (oval-shaped puff pastry).
Dine in at famous restaurants in Surigao.
Eat authentic local food such a kilawin, sinugba (grille), tinola (stew)…to name a few ( imagining these make me hungry..yumyumyum.).
One-on-one baking session with my mom-in-law.
Bake and let my love one taste my sweets and goodies.
Clean and arrange our new bedroom in my parent’s house (which will be accommodation for the whole vacation).
Organize and segregate our personal things in my parent’s house.
Facilitate (our own) house construction / improvement.
Girls-day-out with my mom and sister.
Hold birthday parties of Andrei and Anyah.
Special dinner with my family and in-laws.
Treat my own family to a great adventure in Siargao.
Hire someone to capture our family portrait for this year.
Image makeover and personal pampering like massage, spa, haircut, and dental caring.
Investment on mutual funds, time deposits, and other form of assets.
Attend the regular holy mass in local churches.

So this will be my blogging map. And I can’t wait to write stories about each of the items in the list.

Tonight I have set a dinner date with my former students who are now working in Manila. Actually all of them have come from Surigao City, which is also my native town. These students of mine belong to the primary batches taking Information Technology degree at a state college where I am previously teaching some four years before. As pioneering groups, I happen to believe that “first impression lasts” because they have proved something and somewhat created a lasting impression on me. Most of all they are hardworking, talented, and dedicated who also set a high regard for themselves and keep focus toward their personal dreams. Mind you, they are innovative and active especially on class-related activities. Our relationship even goes beyond the school campus because we even consider each other as friends too. Most of them have shared their personal life and struggles to me. Having a humble and down-to-earth attitude I know they will succeed someday, and I my intuition never failed me. Now, they are earning the fruits of their sweat and hardships because they have been doing so well in their own career and path of achievement. I should say they have realized their aspirations in life. And now, I am excited to see them once again and try to know what they are up to after all these years.

We hire a van from our Omani friend and student, Sami, and left home at 11:00 o’clock in the evening. Being a frequent traveler and “bakasyonista”, we want to be in the airport many hours ahead our flight schedule to have plenty of time in checking in our luggage or perhaps to fix things if something goes wrong. This is one good tip for a stress-free travel.

Last day of work before leaving Oman

For four years, I have been working at Al Musanna College of Technology as Laboratory Instructor shortly known as Technician. It does mean that we have specialized skills to assist lecturers in the classroom. At times we also conduct short term training and lectures especially for skills enhancement and staff development program but mostly we support the college in terms of technical expertise and sometimes administrative-related tasks. I belong to the Educational Technology Center and when I came to Oman in 2008, I was first assigned to a computer laboratory. But after six months (my probation period), I have been relocated to join the special team dedicated to work with the college website (www.act.edu.om). To keep the story short, I am still with the team and loving my job because it helps to learn the many things i need to keep me updated with the trends and demands of IT. Added to that, I also became part of the eLearning group task to maintain and manage the Learning Management System of the college (www.act.edu.om/elearning).

Anyway, today is the last working day and everyone in campus is so thrilled to get to the airport and take their flight back home. I admit I am one of them. You see we’ve got our tickets long before this school year ends. As our departure day is approaching, we have done nothing except making daily countdown, exchanging plans for summer, and shopping for special souvenir to our love ones. As for me, we are ready a week before with our luggage contents, bookings, and important documents.

Normally at the last day of the school year, employees are given consideration by the management to leave the office earlier especially those who have early afternoon flights provided that everything are secured and properly endorsed. Gabby, my room partner, and I grab this chance and so after cleaning and keeping all important things in the office then giving our keys to the server, we all went home and use the remaining hours for preparation. Thursday morning at 5:30AM, we will be on the plane for Philippines. I am so excited for our 50days holiday break – with travels to Manila, Cebu, Surigao and Siargao.

ETC Farewell Party at Grill House Restaurant

Since 2011, it became a tradition of my department, Educational Technology Centre, to have a special dinner party before the end of the school year. Added to that, the event also highlighted the excellent job made by the employees and gave credits to those who will be leaving the college for good.

But for this year's party, we all head off to Grill House Restaurant located near Naseem Garden. This is a restaurant of the same name where we also held Anyah’s Baptismal Reception in their Seeb branch. The place is quite spacious, properly maintained, and well decorated. We use their functional hall located at that far end of the restaurant that caters to huge number of guests. Our buffet tables serve mostly Indian cuisines like chicken tikka, vegetable rice, mutton biryani and among others.

Before the party begins, we have pictures taken as a souvenir of the event. We group ourselves according to gender and nationality. A short program allowed the head of ETC, our boss – Mr. Kumar, to give his short speech and heartfelt thanks of all the effort done by the department employees. Indeed he is grateful and at the same time saddened with the news that one of our fellow workers, Mr. Ramakanth, decided to go back to India and be with his ailing father.

Though, I am a bit depressed knowing that one of my workmates in Educational Services Section will go but I do understand his very reason for leaving. After all, his family is his first priority as much as I do. Altogether we have a wonderful dinner and talks about our activities for the coming summer vacation.

How to get an OEC from the Phil Embassy – POLO in Oman

Overseas Foreign Workers (OFW) and those who are currently working with existing employment contracts, like me and my husband, need to obtain an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) from the Phillippine Embassy in their jobsite if they wanted to take a visit or vacation back to the home country.

The main purpose of OEC, under the requirement of POEA Rules and Regulations, is to help ensure that Filipino OFWs are properly documented and protected from their employers. Added to that it is also a privilege for these “modern day heroes” to be exempted from paying the Philippine travel tax and airport terminal fee when going back to their jobsite. Likewise, the OEC is used to avail travel tax reduction of OFW dependents from the Philippine Tourism Authority.

Since we are going home this month, I prefer to get an OEC from the Philippine Embassy-POLO in Oman because it is more convenient and more affordable than getting the same document from the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) office in Philippines. Even though, I haven’t personally tried availing that piece of paper from POEA first hand, but I have heard stories that are frustrating and sometimes these fellow Filipinos are cursing for a very sluggish and enervating services they have experienced back home. Added to that the amount is cheaper at a cost of 1 OMR roughly 108 pesos (as of the current forex) than the 300 Pesos charged by POEA.

But that OEC is valid for sixty days from the date of its issuance. So, it is better to get the document few days before our departure just to make sure that the certificate caters to our slated vacation time.

So, here are the simple steps on how to avail that important certificate:

Step 1: Prepare the necessary requirements

Take note that the filing of OEC is done at the Philippine Overseas Labor and Office (POLO) beside the Philippine Embassy from Saturdays to Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Among the required documents that you need to present at the Embassy include: copy of passport with valid visa, copy of resident or labor card, valid OWWA membership (if any), and previous OEC receipt (if any).

Then at the designated booth, obtain an OFW Information Sheet and fill up the necessary information.

Step2: Pay the OEC fee

Once everything is complete, return to the processing counter and submits all the requirements and pay the amount of 1 OR (as of this date) in cash only.

Step 3: Review the correctness of the entries

The processing of the document will take 5 to 10 minutes provided that documentary requirements are complete. So, you need to review the completeness and correctness of the entries found in the OEC. There are 4 copies that you will get which you will give to the following: for the airline, for the Labor Assistance Center (LAC) counter, for Terminal Fee Counter (located at the airport), and for Immigration Counter (OFW’s copy).

The validity of the paper is indicated in all copies at the lower left side of portion. All workers who were issued with the OEC are cleared for deployment and should not need to present documents required under POEA 2007 package of reforms such as the TESDA NC2 for household workers or OWAA Certificate of Orientation or Competency on Language and Culture at the airport.

Here are more tips:

The Overseas Workers Welfare Association (OWWA) membership, which is one the requirements for getting an OEC, is valid for only 2 years. If in case that your membership is about to expire or had expired, you can apply for renewal at the Phil. Embassy and pay the amount of 10 OMR. Then you will be issued with the Official Receipt known as E-receipt and the certificate of coverage that includes your PAG-IBIG and PhilHealth contributions as well.

Another good thing, the Philippine Embassy has launched its new site to “highlight activities and projects undertaken for the Filipino expatriate community in the sultanate” and at the same time an online “resource for expatriates, but also citizens interested in business and travel opportunities in the Philippines”.

We have been living in Oman for more than four years now. For those years, plenty of things happened especially on my job-related work where I was able to acquire new skills, friends, and family. These made me perfectly loving my job and my workplace too.

On one hand, my company, Bahwan CyberTek LLC, normally renews our contract before the end of the school year after which a testimonial dinner is held in the evening for socialization and fellowship with the company and its employees. This year we had annual dinner party at Al Sawadi Beach Resort on July 7, 2012 at 7:00 o’clock in the evening.

You see, the renewal of our contract is another blessing for us to work in the college. In this way, us expatriates, are able to mold and develop the young Omanis and help them become productive citizens of this country. It also means that another year awaits for us to live and have a good life in Oman. But this coming new school year, something wonderful is about to happen. With this I am looking for another year of rewarding workload, lasting friendship, and beautiful relationships. Yes I truly love my second home country – Oman.

What will I do during Vacation? {My Summer Bucket List}

Yehey! It is exactly 14 days from today and we will be traveling to PHILIPPINES. There is a mixed of emotions come rushing me now because it is what I have been waiting - our homecoming to my much-loved country - after three long years. Honestly, i know that within these remaining days, I will fixate on pre-departure preparations just to make sure that all the things we need to bring are complete (like passports, tickets, etc.) and our house in Oman is in full secure once we are on vacation.

But on the other side, I want to make most of our holiday. To do this, I review my previous post and from there, I have listed down the specific details of the things I will do during my getaway. I call them my “Summer Bucket List”.

My list is clustered into bunch for me to see them in a very organized manner. So here are the things that will keep me (and my family) busy for the whole 50 days:

A. Great Travel Destinations

Explore the Ocean Park in Manila.
2 to 3 days’ vacation to Calbayog, Samar.
Road trip: Calbayog-Leyte-Surigao (if possible, have a short stop-over on historical places).
Offer an intimate prayer at the Holy Pilgrim’s Paradise of Mama Mary in Simala, Sibonga, Cebu.
Swimming or watching with the Gentle Whalesharks in Oslob, Cebu.

B. Hometown and Neighboring Places

Surfing and Kayaking in Cloud 9, General Luna, Surigao del Norte.
Swimming in Magpupungko Tidal Flats and Lagoon, Punta Bilar, Surigao del Norte.
Caving in Enchanted Sohoton Islands, Socorro, Surigao del Norte.
Pool swimming in Almont Beach Resort, Lipata, Surigao City.
Boating in small islands between Lakandula and Placer, Surigao del Norte.

Hot news, movies, chitchats and talks

Read or buy local showbiz magazines.
Watch local showbiz program most of the time.
Watch box office movie in a theater (movie tickets in Oman are quite expensive).
Chat (regularly online) with my friends in Oman and Philippines.
Conduct short lecture (if possible) on local academic institutes.

D. Friends and Relatives

Visit with my relatives in Manila, Cebu, and Surigao.
Invite my (HS close) barkadas for a special dinner at home.
Hang out with my friends at a budget resto bar which play alternative music.
A singing/ karaoke session with friends or families in a local KTV bar.
Be invited to / attend (if possible) memorable events like fiestas, weddings, baptisms, birthdays, or perhaps burial (sigh..this is reality, right?).

E. Food cuisine and local delicacies

Buy Cebu’s finest dried mangoes and Otap (oval-shaped puff pastry).
Dine in at famous restaurants in Surigao.
Eat authentic local food such a kilawin, sinugba (grille), tinola (stew)…to name a few ( imagining these make me hungry..yumyumyum.).
One-on-one baking session with my mom-in-law.
Bake and let my love one taste my sweets and goodies.

F. House and bedroom

Clean and arrange our new bedroom in my parent’s house (which will be accommodation for the whole vacation).
Make a facelift or makeover of one section of my parent’s house.
Organize and segregate our personal things in my parent’s house.
Facilitate (our own) house construction / improvement.

G. Family, Parents, and Siblings

Girls-day-out with my mom and sister.
Hold birthday parties of Andrei and Anyah.
Special family dinner with my family and in-laws.
Treat my own family to a great adventure in Siargao.
Hire someone to capture our family portrait for this year.

Aside from the above items, there are other things I want to do back home to help me accomplish some of the goals I set for myself for 2012, such as:

Image makeover and personal pampering like massage, spa, haircut, and dental caring.
Undergo fitness regimen and hit the ideal weight.
Investment on mutual funds, time deposits, and other form of assets.
Attend the regular holy mass in local churches.
Campus visit at St. Paul University Philippines in Tuguegarao.

You see those are pretty plenty “must-do” activities. For sure they will keep me loaded. I wonder how long it will take me to cross them off.

So I'm wishing myself luck in hopes that in between being aware of the everything I put in my mouth, being diligent, and being held accountable to myself, I will be able to complete my bucket list within the time frame.

But really! I can accomplish all. I can.. I just have to say this and be optimistic!

Mom’s love letter to her precious son

As a mom, there’s nothing more joyful and satisfying than to see her kids growing up so well. As a way to express my inner feelings, I wrote a special message to my beloved son, Andrei, when he turned 8 years old today (June 23, 2012).

Dear Andrei,

Time has flown so fast that it seems only yesterday I hold you in my arms when you are so tiny and fragile. Your beaming smile is enough to cure the pain I had during your delivery and there is a feeling of content of having you as an angel to our family. Indeed, your coming is enough to keep me and your dad close to each other and develop our love for parenthood. Much more, watching you growing up is even more rewarding because you have become a sweet, happy, obedient, and very loving kid with full of spirit and enthusiasm. You are good looking even then. I guess you are lucky to inherit the good genes that your dad and I have passed on to you.

Back then, exactly eight years ago, at this very moment, I felt a sudden indescribable pain in my back and lower abdomen. The pain became worst every minute or two. I know you were excited to see me and your whole family and it is was a sign that your dad and our family rushed me to the hospital. But something odd happened along the way. My asthma attacked me in the early morning. I have difficulty breathing on top of the enduring pain I am suffering on that instant. Then, I heard your heartbeat slowly in digress. You became immobile and unresponsive. My doctor said you and I were already in distress that I need to undergo medical operation at that very moment. Making sure that it was right time to take you out, an ultrasonography was conducted on me, checking your situation as well as my placenta. It was a relief when the radiologist reported that you were doing fine and my placenta was ripe enough for incision. Maybe you were just regaining your strength as I was preparing myself for the frightening cesarean operation. I kept myself calm and reciting my personal prayers for God to be with us and keep us safe and protected. Surprisingly, at the operating room, all the medical attendants and practitioners were happy and smiling. I guess they were excited too just as me and your whole family. There were five doctors near my bed while I can’t remember the number of nurses in that quiet and cold room. All I can here were soft voices and the beep from the heart monitor. I closed my eyes while a teardrop rolled down my check then someone gently wiped it and hold my freezing hand. It was your grandmamala Ofelia. She was with me – with us. I know she was cheerfully smiling though I can’t see it through while surgical mask covered her lower face. My whole body was motionless and numbed. One nurse told me to go to sleep. But I did not. I waited for you to come out. After sometime, a boisterous shriek enlivened the atmosphere. It was you. Shouting out so loud like “Heaven praise! I am alive”. Then, I thank God and I went to sleep.

Days have passed and you grew into a doting child. In the first four years, your qualities were already evident that amazed even the distant and strange ones. You love to dance in front of people even with your odd steps. When you hold a microphone you sing so well just as your Dadalo or sometimes poorly as your dad. You love to draw and making the wall of your grannies’ home as your own murals. You love to ride in the car especially with your Papalo and in front seat like a big man. You love Jollibee that you keep on asking the “chicken joy”. But one time, you pushed a little kid in the Jollibee playground and ran fast toward me as if you were asking my protection. You love to be hug and kissed especially when you were down and sick. You selfishly say “I love you” to everyone around especially for me and daddy. You love swimming like in the beach even if you turned into a toasted bean. You love to chat and once started your intuitiveness may lead a person to admire your sweetness and loveliness. Did you remember the pretty girls you met during our travels? I have kept a picture of them to help you remember of their lovely faces and act of kindness. I know you are baby then, just exploring the world around you.

Your dad and I made a promise to have ONLY you for many years so that we could focus on your growing and development stage. We wanted to treasure the big as well as little things about you. We wanted to give you the best of everything as most parents do. We wanted you to be our “apple of the eye” and the “dearest to the family”. Truly lucky you were the first grandchild of your grandparents from mom’s and dad’s side. We wanted you to enjoy childhood days and provided the things within our reach. We wanted you to discover the many things that life has to offer. And above all, we wanted you to feel contented as being you all ALONE. So we waited for the time that you will ask for another sibling.

Then, after almost seven years of waiting, your beautiful sister come in a perfect time. She is the answer to your and our prayers. We then witnessed the real brotherhood in you. You love to cuddle her in your little arms. You sing her lullabies when she’s sleepy or crying. You read her wonderful stories. You talk to her even if she cannot understand your words. You share to her your food even if they are not for babies. You simply smile even she smack your face and poke your back. You always give a way for her specially with your fave-toy-of-all – the iPad. Certainly, you are a great brother and loving your sister that much is a satisfaction for us to know that you will be both helping and reaching each other no matter what life sends to both of you.

All of these things about you are enough to make me feel rewarded and contented. I bet I can consider myself a wonderful mom and extend the credits also to your loving dad as well as our supportive families and friends. I cannot forget your usual Q&A with your Yaya Ging-Ging before:

Summer Getaway at the Millennium Hotel Infinity Pool and a Get-Together Dinner

It has been a practice of the Pinoy Community in Muladdah to cap the school year with a gathering or thanksgiving party. But this year is something unusual and different. It is a new experience for all of us. Instead of just plainly having a luscious dinner and chitchat with each other, we all head off to the Millennium Hotel in Al Musannah to plunge and swim at the beautiful infinity pools.

We are grateful to the event organizers Ms. Catherine, Ms. Jocelyn,Ms. Cris, Ms. Jane, and Mr. Enrico who come up with this idea and really make a lot of effort for our escapade to be fun and exciting as possible. They have carefully plan and make arrangement with the hotel management. Fortunately, because we are a large group the swimming pool fee is reduced from 5 OMR to 2 OMR for adults and the kids from 3OMR to free access. However, we are only allowed until 5:00 o’clock in the afternoon and bringing of outside (not from the hotel) food is also forbidden. Although we wanted to maximize the use of the swimming pools but the scorching heat of the hot weather can barely possible for us stay under the sun the whole day. On June 7, we assemble at the hotel lobby while others head straight to the pool side at 8:00 o’clock in the morning. It is a perfect day where the cloudless blue skies and sunshine are in marked and welcome greeting for the summer season. The crystal blue water and beautifully designed swimming pools are temptations I cannot resist. There are two different pools in the hotel, the outdoor pool is for boys and the indoor or tent-covered pool is for girls. This is how the sexes are always separated and are very common in Oman. But we altogether stay in the bigger outdoor pool because it is ideal for a very large group. It has an artistically crafted downpouring water fount while the adjacent infinity pools are facing the beach front that present a spectacular sight particularly in the late afternoon.

All the girls change on their best swimwear because it is strictly prohibited by the management to enter the pool in an improper outfit. But because we are “little conservative” and have “little confidence” we manage to cover our two piece suit with some light and sexy alter tops paired with mini-stretchable shorts. Meanwhile, the boys are bold and revealing. They take off their tops and showing their skinny structure or chubby sizes. This is really funny among Filipinos. Until now even in Philippines you can see women wearing alter tops and minishorts as their ideal swimwear. Unlike other Asians who are confident and daring enough to wear bikinis regardless whether they have the sexy curves or voluptuous figures. I guess it will take time among Filipino women to embrace the ideology of wearing swimsuits whenever bathing in the beach or swimming pools.

However, I encourage few of my few girl friends to take snapshost with our sexy tops while half of our body is submerged in the water. And we did! Individually and as a group! Afterwards we are all laughing and teasing each other. I wish we can do this swimming escapade over and over again.

Our friends and my family especially my kids – Andrei and Anyah – are really enjoying our day amidst the heat of the sun not until 12 noon.

As for me this once in a year activity is all worth doing and a wonderful escape from "boredom and homesickness". Most specially that we get access to infinity pools of Oman’s four star luxury Hotel at a discounted price.

I feel a rush of excitement because I am one of C&K loyal fans. I can’t wait to visit the venue and have myself immersed to the line of products that are on super discounts.

With their commitment to exude style and confidence, Charles and Keith has become my favorite fashion brand after I purchase a couple of sandals and bags. For me, though the prices are a bit pricey but I am quite satisfied with the quality and durability of their products that normally comes in seasonal styles.

On Wednesday we get into the place at 5:00 o’clock in the afternoon. It is after almost ten minutes of being lost and circling around Qurum looking for the Al Arami Complex. But, as we head to the basement, disordered and blaring situation comes to view. There are packs of people hastily fitting on their shoes sizes. Others have gone wild when their preferred shoes are taken by other customers. Some are more conscious or conservative asking their companion’s opinion on whether the shoes/sandals look good at them. Many are holding about five to six boxes of footwear while others are busy examining at each belt hanged on the stand.

When I saw the price advertised on the shoe stands, “9.900 OMANI RIALS FOR TWO ITEMS”, I am extremely amazed and happy that instantly chose the sandals that are best for me. I found the following shoes that fit to my taste and style.

The strappy sandal will jazz up my everyday style with bronze and brown color. I can choose a snappy outfit such as wearing shorts or above-knee level skirts for a bold and intense look.

The black strappy sandal with floral petals can greatly show off my toe nails and ankles. It is sexy that I need a nice foot spa and pedi to catch someone’s attention into my feet.

The red wine color three-inch high stilleto is perfect for formal occasions. It is absolutely gorgeous to match up with long dresses with flowing fabric or cocktail dresses with silky textures.

The gray colored four-inch sandal has an intricate crisscross design with an open-top zipper. It is stealing scene footwear that will take me from the carpet to the center stage.

My shoes are all beautiful and elegant. I also bought a pair of black sandals, and magenta sandals with gold buttons for my aunties in Philippines as my “pasalubong” for them in July.

Apart from the shoes, I purchased four belts at 2.900 Omani Rials for two pieces. I can wear these belts from mid-waist to low-waist with metal hardware buckle to add instant accent to any of my outfit.

All in all, I spend 35.500 Omani Rials (about 3,989 PHP or 91.95$USD) for all items. Wow! That’s a big and super discounted price. Just imagine some of the shoes cost from 12 OR to 22 OR while the belts cost around 5 to 7 OR.

Chowking food outlet in Qurum CIty CEnter, Oman

Chowking is one of my favorite food chain and now has open its first outlet in Oman on May 20, 2012. Hundreds of people mostly Eastern and Asian flocked to Qurum City Center to taste their famous Chinese and oriental cuisines.

The company started its business in 1985 and more than two decades later it became one of the biggest and known to the best tasting Chinese food outlet in Philippines. It is considered as the number one pioneer in quick-service restaurants in Asia and now has expand its coverage worldwide! It's concept is conceived from the idea of combing Western fast food style with Chinese cuisines. Most of its sellable food include dim sum, rice toppings, and noodle soup. And because most Filipinos love oriental cuisine, Chowking always gets the first spot in their preferences when it comes to food and dining.

So today, my husband Jesse treat us to dine out and we rush to the place to order my fave Chowking Lauriat.

When we arrive, a long queue of avid "Pinoy" diners are lining up in the counter. To my dismay, not all my selections are available and the Indian staff who is taking our orders is anxious to clear the queue of customers. So instead, we order shanghai lauriat, chicken lauriat, and mixed seafood kungpa.

The prices are a bit expensive. The Shanghai lauriat and Chicken Lauriat each cost 2.800 Omani rials roughly around 315.00 in Philippine peso or $7.28 while Mixed Seafood Kungpa is sold at 2.300 OR about 261.00 PHP or $5.9. The Shanghai lauriat consist of shanghai rolls (minced beef with spices rolled in a flour-made wrapper), pancit canton, siomai, and fried chicharon. But for chicken lauriat, the chicken is serve in lieu of the shanghai rolls. The Mixed seafood kungpa is a soft rice topped with shrimps, and squid rings in a sweet, sour, n spicy sauce.

We patiently waiting for more than 15 minutes for our orders. Then we hear the bell and our customer number "36" is held up by the female staff.

Jesse gently place the two dishes on our table. The food are serve on a disposable styro plate chowking paper bowl. I quickly examine the lauriat and looking for the Buchi for my baby to try but it is not included. Instead, I cut a bit of fried chicharon for my little girl to taste.

Surprisingly, Anyah gobble up the piece of chicharon and actually chewing it with her bare gums. In a while, I take a bite of the siomai and some pancit canton, then the shanghai. Though I am a satisying my cravings for Chowking food but the food serving is in small proportions. I could find no more than 4 pieces of siomao and 4 pieces of shanghai rolls. Above all, I did not taste the flavor I used to get in Philippines. Most of which are salty and starchy. The food even turned cold quickly before I could finish the half of it.

The rice topped with seafood looked most tempting but once again it was cold and lumpy which means that not enough "wok fire" was used to cook the rice.

But anyway, I will just leave this food critique of mine in this blog. Perhaps, all that I have experience with the new Chowking outlet in the Middle East will only be at the start. After all, I still appreciate that food chain like this that originated from my home country brings boost to most Filipinos and I am certainly hoping that the “Taste and flavor will keep you (me) come back”.
